In underground mining operations, the over- riding issue has to be protection of worker health and safety. The employees underground, making a living in a dangerous occupation, know these are major issues. These men bargain their lives and health on the presumption that the operating management knows its business, and they, the underground employees, can pursue their occupation with the assurance that management has provided a safe and healthy ambient underground environment. When management assumes the mantle of protection of underground workers, it has to be positive that qualified engineers have designed the project, and that capable operating personnel are in charge and always available. Those persons with these responsibilities must be knowledgeable in the engineering and occupational health aspects of sine ventilation. The ultimate function of a mine ventilation system is to provide a comfortable, healthy and safe ambient environment for the underground workers. The attainment of these objectives has been complicated with the increased application of electrical equipment and diesel-powered mechanized mining equipment underground (discharging toxic diesel emissions); increased production rates with the attendant increased production of airborne dust; and mine development in increasingly hostile mineral formations containing combustible strata gases, radon gas emissions, along with high heat and humidity. In general, the modern mechanization of present mining operations has resulted in a sore complex set of problems for the engineer planning the underground ambient environment.

Deep well disposal of selected industrial wastes has been proved feasible and acceptable in the New Orleans area by several industries including Shell Oil Company's Norco Refinery and Chemical Plant where three of the six successful disposal wells in this area are operating. Well design and procedures for restoration of capacity are based, in most cases, on the principles of brine injection developed by oil producers in South Louisiana. Geological formations in the Gulf Coast area are suited to this type of injection because receiving strata are porous, isolated from sources of potable water and their water is compatible with the liquid wastes to be injected. This method of disposal is a simple, complete and economical solution to the problems presented by certain hard to treat wastes.

Coal handling facilities, such as utility plants, coal terminals, ports, manufacturing, processing, etc. Protect themselves against interruptions in coal receipts by maintaining a 60 to 90 day supply in storage. Not too long ago, these storage piles were referred in terms of hundreds or thousands of tons. Today, it is not unusual to have hundreds of thousands or millions of tons in storage. Burn, or shipping and receiving, rates have increased dramatically and storage piles have grown in horizontal as well as vertical dimensions. Fixed systems for delivering and retrieving coal from storage have increased in length and operating capacity and have become highly sophisticated in their operation. With few exceptions, mobile material handling equipment is used to handle all coal beyond the reach of these systems. These machines take excess loose coal from the fixed system to the storage area, place it on the storage pile, compact it, maintain the pile, protect against spontaneous combustion, the spread of fires if they occur, and return the coal to the reclaim system as required, plus many of the small chores around the facility.

Wet scrubbing of fine coal from Thermal dryers poses a number of problems in adapting the gas cleaning equipment for required clean-up of the fine particulate matter. Among then are: 1. The dust In the gases leaving the Thermal dryer cyclone-s is often extremely fine with high percentages of the total dust loading less than one (1) micron in size. 2, The flue gas entering the scrubber is corrosive since the coal fired in the thermal dryer furnace is in the range of 0.7% by weight sulphur or higher. Therefore comparatively high cost stainless steel alloys or corrosion resistant linings are required for a satisfactory service life. 3. Requirements for residual coal loadings leaving the gas e scrubber are continually being lowered while modern coal preparation operation is imposing heavier burdens on the collection system through introduction into the Thermal dryer system of very fine coal previously not recovered. The advent of flotation systems in increasing numbers is typical of this trend 4. The installation of a scrubbing system on Thermal dryers is made primarily to reduce air pollution and product recovery value is of little or no value. Therefore the operating costs, that is, of gas pressure drop and water requirements must be held to a minimum.

The addition of new data and corrections can be made under the control of a simple editing session. All programs for this system are written in FORTRAN and executabe "MACROS".. After the addition of new data, the whole file Is reinitialized to update the binary file and cross-reference tables. Updating the binary file involves rerunning the initializing program. The creation of graphic plots like cross sections and plan views is menu-driven from a terminal and very user-friendly. Small files containing not more than 10,000 entries (survey and assay points) are suitable for this setup, particularly for computers with less than 2 Megabytes of real and virtual memory. The largest file processed contained 35,000 lines of survey and assay information and required 4 megabytes of virtual memory. Working with this size file slows down the time for the creation of plots and cross sections. Another independent system is more akin to a financial type of data base. It was installed in one Anaconda mine as part of the operation's inventory, warehouse, day-pay payroll, and purchasing data bases. It is a highly hardware-dependent system, in particular, IBM's CICS/VS (Customer Information Control System/Virtual Storage). This is a true relational data base that optimizes storage requirements, supports online inquiry, update, data entry, and data security. While this system has been tested and proven in accounting applications, it requires programming expertice in PL/I and other CICS utility programs. It is well suited for huge data bases (like the 35,000 lines of data), but cumbersome for small engineering files.

INTRODUCTION In any mining operation all possible steps should be taken to increase efficiency. One area for improvement is mine planning and design, particularly in the area of equipment selection for room-and-pillar systems. Be- cause of the availability of a wide variety of face machines, a fair degree of selectivity can be exercised in the choice of equipment for a particular job. However, this choice must be made on the basis of quantitative facts and forecasts related to the mining application. The purpose of this section is to develop and analyze the details of the mining process. Some specific areas studied include the relationship of system design to productivity, suboptimization as a result of equipment changes, and measurement of system performance. The plan of work leading to a quantitative description of these study areas is based on the growing interest in total system design using simulation as an analytical method (Manula, 1963). CHARACTERISTICS OF PRODUCTION OPERATIONS FROM ROOM-AND-PILLAR SECTIONS For a given mining method, raw production in a given section of a mine is primarily dependent upon the coal seam thickness, roof and floor conditions, methane emission, the mining methods, and the man-machine element. Average section production varies from 300 to 800 st per shift for conventional and continuous mining in high seams and from less than 100 to 300 st per shift in low seams. Since the reject varies from 0 to 40%, these figures must be decreased by the appropriate percentage to reflect the amount of clean coal mined. Personnel requirements per production section per shift for the various methods are listed in Table 1. Table 1. Production Personnel Method No. Method No. Conventional 12-1 5 Longwall 9-14 Continuous 9-1 2 Shortwall 9-12 MINING VARIABLES To evaluate the constraints and interrelationships for various mining methods, it is necessary to categorize the variables which underlie system production potential. Seven critical independent variables which determine production can be identified and categorized (Suboleski, 1978) : Seam Height The five categories are as follows: less than 36 in.;. 36 to 55 in.; 55 to 100 in.; 100 to 180 in.; and greater than 180 in. Floor Quality Floor quality ranges from : Excellent: Smooth, hard, grades less than 1 to 1 % % , and dry. Good: Smooth, soft but dry, with grades less than 3 % . The floor will deteriorate, but cautious operation can prevent it. There may possibly be heaving at some later time. Fair. Soft and damp. There is occasional interference with equipment operation; requires the use of four-wheel drive shuttle cars; ruts with regular use, and may have adverse grades of 5 to 7%. This may be coupled with slippery bottom and/or occasional steep rolls. Poor: Soft and wet. Requires blocking of the bottom to support equipment. There are frequent steep rolls and grades in excess of 7%. Roof Quality Roof quality ranges from : Excellent: Men are able to work under the unsupported top during the initial production cycle if legally permitted. Good: The roof is bolted on a 4 x 4 or 5 x 5 pattern with short bolts (442 in.) or <seam height if the seam >42 in., or requires posting with no bolts on a 4 x 4 or 5 x 5 pattern. There are no falls. Average: The roof is normally bolted on a 4 x 4 or 5 x 5 pattern, but with long bolts (>seam height or >6 ft.). There are infrequent minor falls or there may be an excellent roof which is difficult to drill. Fair: This type often requires spot bolting in addition to the regular pattern or bolting with planks. The roof conditions require shorter than planned cuts, or narrow cuts. Poor: This type requires bolts plus crossbars and posts, or installation of yielding supports or truss-type support. It is almost certain to fall if this is not done. Methane Liberation This ranges from none detected to low (no buildup at the face, even with minimum ventilation requirements) to moderate (the curtains must be extremely tight and tubing close to the face or methane will build up to 1 % during the loading of the car) to high (methane will build up to 170 if the miner is operated at the normal rate, even with proper ventilation). Hardness of Coal Coal hardness falls into the following categories: Soft: Soft coal is easily cut by a continuous miner. A plow could be used by longwall. Average: Coal of average hardness could be easily cut by a miner, and a shearer would be used in the longwall. Moderate: Moderately hard coal causes difficult cut-

It is believed that considerable economic benefit would arise if run of mine (ROM) coal from the underground mines in the Winifrede seam could he enriched before shipment to the preparation plant by partial removal of the shale. Shale could comprise up to 50% of the ROM product. Complete mine-mouth separation is not necessary, but any process must be dry and have high Btu recovery. We have conducted a preliminary analysis of coal/shale mixtures from the Winifrede seam and we find that it is quite possible that a 50-50 ROM mixture of coal and shale could be converted to a 60-40 coal-shale mixture by inspection of individual lumps coming from the mine. The device would consist of a feeder/siever section to deliver the ROM coal > 5 cm (2 in) to an inspection station via a conveyor belt. This inspection station decides if a piece is coal or shale, and if it is shale, activates an air jet to blow shale off of the belt. We have evaluated a dielectric loss technique for the inspection device. The potential advantages of the dielectric loss method are high throughput, low capital cost, and no special handling or licenses would be required. Such a single lump inspection technique is made possible because of advances in high speed electronics and servo systems. This paper provides a summary of our analyses on the Winifrede coal sample, a description of a proposed apparatus to separate coal from shale, some of the experiments needed to demonstrate our ideas.

The amount of copper flash smelting slag has increased during the recent years along with an increasing slag-to-metal ratio. During slag tapping, some copper sulfide is mechanically entrained. As a result, it is necessary to recover copper matte from the slag by suitable methods. At present, the most common way is slow, controlled cooling in a transfer ladle. However, research on the detailed effects of slow cooling and the function of slag modification is rare. This paper described experiments that were performed at different cooling rates (0.5, 1.5, 3, and 7 °C/min), with and without additive. A detailed characterization of the copper-rich phase and its particle size was subsequentlymade using SEM-EDSmicrographs and image analysis software.With a decrease in cooling rate, the particle size of the copper-rich matte phase became larger. The addition of gypsum and carbon as a slag modifier affected the size of the copper-rich phase slightly, and its chemical composition was modified compared with the experiments without additive.

The design of cover systems for reclamation schemes in tailings requires estimation or determination of tailings materials properties such as compressibility, shear strength and consolidation characteristics. It is very difficult and expensive to obtain truly undisturbed tailings samples for laboratory testing. In situ testing methods have been developed for economically obtaining large amounts of information. Two of these methods are described, the piezocone and the flat plate dilatometer. Both of these methods provide a rapid means of detailed material identification in a nearly continuous fashion for the entire depth investigated. The equipment is described and typical data from a uranium tailings impoundment is presented. The results are compared and the advantages and disadvantages of these methods are discussed.

To address the problem of grade estimation in a general three-dimensional shape and the uncertainty associated with the estimate, the technique of jackknifing/block kriging short-cut is proposed. A new estimator called jackknife kriging is introduced first. Through the jackknife variance, a confidence limit for the reserve grade estimate can be calculated. Unlike the kriging variance, which is more a measure of data configuration and is independent of data values, the jackknife variance reflects the true variability of the data. This approach provides a simple way to set a confidence level for global estimation of resources.

The packed column flotation cell is an awesome separation device. Virtually unknown and untested, the packed column flotation cell is one of the ten most important developments in mineral processing of the 21st century. Though experimental and industrial data is limited, it is clear that the packed column flotation cell is two to three orders of magnitude better than the conventional flotation cell and one to one and a half orders of magnitude better than the open column flotation cell. With the modern packing taking up less than one percent of the packed column, column blocking does not occur. For a packed column operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the estimated mean time between failures (MTBF) is one hundred thousand hours or roughly twelve years. With no moving parts, lower maintenance costs, lower power consumption and inherent operating stability, the packed column is a powerful separating machine. Because there is little meaningful data for comparing the packed column to the conventional flotation cell and the open column flotation cell, much of the material presented in this paper are guesstimates. They are disinterested guesstimate made by the authors after extensive theoretical work and reviewing the known facts. In the authors&apos; opinion, no available data contradicts the guesstimate. The authors expect that there may be errors as large as three hundred percent. Even three hundred percent errors will not change the conclusions of this paper. The packed column flotation cell is a formidable separating device. To understand the problems of comparing the three types of flotation cells, consider the fact that the three cells may have different modes of separation. One of the authors, Meloy, believes that in the conventional cell, the primary particle separation takes place in the liquor with secondary separation taking place in the froth, while for open column flotation, all the separation takes place in the froth. However, he believes that in the packed column a large part of the separation may take place on the walls of the packing. If this is true, not only is the method of modeling each type of cell different, but the method of particle selection in the cell is different. This means that one type of cell may be better at differentiating between two different types of particles. There is a growing body of literature on open and packed column flotation. "Underground structures such as square/arch steel sets, king beam structure, etc. are widely used for the roof support in underground mines. In designing and calculating the required carrying capacities of these underground structures, how to identify the potential rock loads on the structures over long term is a challenging question for ground control engineers. Based on design practices of both surface and underground structures, the authors have designed and applied appropriate load factors in underground structural design projects to accommodate different rock types, entry/intersection dimensions, roof geologic conditions, availability of roof bolts and water, etc. Classification of load (reduction) factors for large-span underground intersections are presented for reference. Success of designed underground structures in effectively controlling roof stability over years indicates the applicability of the load factor concept for underground structural design, and its same significance as of the load factor specifications in ASCE/SEI 7-10, ANSI/AWC NDS (2015), and AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications (2012). The load factor concept will facilitate ground control engineers to appropriately utilize popular structural design software, such as RISA-3D or -2D to efficiently design and analyze underground structures.LOAD FACTORS IN STRUCTURE DESIGN APPLICATIONSIn structures, loads cause stresses, deformations, and displacements. Assessment of their effects is carried out by the methods of structural analysis with the help of load factors. Loads can be increased or decreased by load factors to meet the requirement that design strength be higher than maximum loads. For example, in designing a staircase, a dead load factor may be 1.2 times the weight of the structure, and a live load factor may be 1.6 times the maximum expected live load based on the Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) method. A majority of continuous mining machines employ a water spray system and a machine-mounted flooded-bed scrubber to suppress and capture dust during coal mining. These machine-mounted dust control systems must be designed to function within the localized face ventilation system at the mining section to control both dust and methane. Spray systems can impede or improve the scrubber effectiveness in controlling dust or methane at the mining face. Laboratory experiments were conducted to examine the effect of spray type, spray pressure, machine body blocking sprays and scrubber airflow on dust and gas levels, while using a 12.2-m (40-ft) exhaust ventilation curtain setback from the face. These experiments were conducted with the mining machine positioned at the end of a simulated 6.1-m (20-ft) sump and slab cut. Results indicate that the hollow cone nozzles with blocking sprays best complement the flooded-bed scrubber performance in an exhaust ventilation system. This external spray system notably reduced dust and gas levels on the off-curtain side of the mining machine for both the sump and slab cut compared to the flat spray nozzles. Higher scrubber airflows reduced dust and gas levels on the curtain side and in the return of the continuous mining machine. The remote operator position, located on the off-curtain side and parallel to the inlet end of the exhaust curtain, sustained the most stable and lowest dust levels around the mining machine.

"Iron as an impurity in pyrophyllite ore affects pottery, ceramics and tile quality. We carried out the characterization of a pyrophyllite ore sample using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and wet chemical analysis. The study revealed the presence of 2.15% iron oxide (Fe2O3 ) along with silica and alumina as the major components, which constituted around 90% of the total sample. We carried out the removal of iron from the pyrophyllite using magnetic separation and acid leaching and found that wet high-intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS) could remove 28% of iron values while oxalic acid leaching could remove up to 99.3%. The leaching kinetics of iron removal and the effects of pulp density, acid concentration, leaching time and temperature were also investigated. The optimum conditions for leaching were found to be leaching time of 60 minutes, temperature of 90°C, pulp density of 5%, oxalic acid concentration of 0.3 M, and particle size below 100 microns. Iron dissolution from the pyrophyllite sample can be best described by the diffusion of ions through the product layer of constant-size spherical particles. The breakdown of the pyrophyllite structure was evident from the FTIR and TGA studies. The activation energy of the leaching process over the temperature range was calculated to be 43.47 kJ/mol. IntroductionPyrophyllite is a naturally occurring phyllosilicate mineral composed of aluminum silicate hydroxide [Al2Si4O10(OH)2] as the major component and often associated with other minerals such as kaolinite, mica, quartz, rutile and epidote. It occurs in fine-grained sericite schist that is quarried as pyrophyllite (Pandit et al., 2008). In India, pyrophyllite occurs mainly in Madhya Pradesh state, Uttar Pradesh state and the Keonjhar district of Odisha state (Harpavat, 1995). Pure pyrophyllite is a highly desirable material for various applications due to its unique properties. It exhibits high refractive behavior, low thermalelectrical conductivity, low expansion coefficient, low hot-load deformation, low bulk density and high corrosion resistance to molten metal and basic slag (Rieger, 1997). It is used in the ceramics, refractory, foundry, electrical-insulation, sanitary-ware, glassmaking, pesticide and rubber fields. Compared with clay, it has lower thermal conductivity and coefficient of expansion, making it more suitable for refractory applications (Harben, 2002; The Minerals Yearbook, 2011)."

During the last few years, Process Machinery Division, Rexnord, has conducted extensive research on the effects of cone crusher variables such as speed, throw and cavity design on the productivity of the crushers. Simultaneously, Rexnord&apos;s engineers have developed advanced design and testing techniques and criteria that assure efficient and reliable crusher designs. The combination of these two has resulted in a design of the 2390 Omnicone (1000 hp) crusher which fits on an existing 7 ft. Symons foundation and yet is capable of producing twice the tonnage compared to our 7 ft. super heavy duty (500 hp) crusher. Both speed and throw can be varied to give a wide application flexibility from making twice the tonnage to the finest product. The 2390 Omnicone also incorporates innovative features such as full balance, cavity clearing, adjusting under load with automation capability, maintenance-free seals, one head for all cavities, ease of maintenance and servicing, etc.

"A composite shell lining typically consists of an outer permanent sprayed concrete shell, a water proofing layer and an inner sprayed or cast concrete shell. Composite shell linings become more and more popular and have been built recently on large scale infrastructure projects. Surprisingly there is very little published literature on the actual structural design of composite linings. As a consequence there is a lack of common understanding on how to design a composite lining structure. Composite action of the outer shell (primary lining) initially carrying short term ground loads and the “unloaded” inner shell (secondary lining) require nonlinear concrete modelling to be able to assess the bearing capacity of the composite lining structure adequately. The composite action of the waterproofing membrane and the inner and outer shells can be considered either by simplified closed form solutions or by numerical models. Strength and stiffness parameters of membrane and concrete govern interaction of inner and outer shell. This paper should contribute to understanding composite lining behaviour with focus on the bearing capacity at limit state by taking into account the actual loading history. Possible ways and concepts on how to deal with these topics are presented, however a broader discussion on limit states of the composite lining materials – also in the long term will be required to come to an agreement on composite lining design methodology. INTRODUCTION Composite Lining Technology Traditionally the construction of shotcrete lined tunnels incorporates primary and secondary linings, separated by a sheet or a sprayable waterproofing membrane. The primary lining shotcrete is considered to be structurally temporary and the secondary lining to be permanent, leading to designs which ignore the bearing capacity of the primary lining in permanent condition. There was general perception that the shotcrete lining installed immediately at the tunnel face, experiencing strains up to 1% and even cracking in the early age, combined with mesh reinforcement additional support measures like lattice girder, spiles and bolts cannot be considered as a permanent structure. But also former shotcrete mixes showed significant weakness with respect to durability suggesting a more temporary nature of primary lining shotcrete. On the other hand it was clear that primary lining shotcrete does not disappear, it may lose probably a certain percentage of its bearing capacity, but discounting any contribution from the primary lining at all was considered inherently conservative. There were different strategies to account for the risk of reduced durability and bearing capacity of the primary lining, either by selecting moderate ground loads for the secondary lining design, by assuming that some residual load will be carried by the primary lining. This approach is very much based on experience. Another more rational possibility is to assume that the primary lining degrades into a rocklike material, which is weaker than the primary lining shotcrete but still imparts some strength to the ground around the secondary lining, but does not need to comply with any concrete design codes any more."

"This paper reports on computational and experimental research, performed at the Collaborative Research Center “Interaction Models for Mechanized Tunneling” at Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany. Research covers a broad spectrum of topics relevant for mechanized tunneling in soft soil conditions. This includes advances exploration methods and models for the characterization of the in-situ ground conditions, the interaction of the face support and the tail gap grouting with the porous soil, multi-scale models for the design of fiber reinforced segmental linings with enhanced robustness, computational methods for the numerical simulation of the tunnel advancement, the soil excavation and the material transport in the pressure chamber, logistics processes and risk analysis in urban tunneling.INTRODUCTIONMechanized Tunneling has proven itself as an economical and flexible construction method that continues to undergo a dynamic evolution process. Shield diameters continue to increase, and the application range of tunnel boring machines is being extended to an ever-increasing variety of geotechnical conditions. In order to maintain economic viability and to ensure an environmentally friendly construction process, realistic and reliable numerical models are required in order to make informed decisions during planning and construction. To provide a reliable numerical prognosis, it is necessary to accurately assess and understand the interactions between the components involved in mechanized tunneling with the surrounding site, the ground, and any pre-existing structures. Heterogeneous geological conditions and often only approximated ground parameters create, in contrast to other engineering projects, special demands. This necessitates new insights to new problems that can only be effectively solved through truly interdisciplinary research. To address these challenges, the German Research Foundation (DFG) has established the Collaborative Research Center “Interaction Models for Mechanized Tunneling” (SFB 837) at the Ruhr-University in Bochum in 2010. Collaborative Research Centers are interdisciplinary scientific research groups in which cooperative research is conducted under the umbrella of a central research theme. With a research budget of ca. 10 Million Euros for the second 4-year funding period, and a research team composed of 13 project leaders along with approximately 35 scientific assistants the SFB 837 is currently one of the largest research groups conducting fundamental research in tunneling related topics worldwide.RESEARCH TOPICSThe research topics of the SFB 837 encompass a number of relevant planning and construction related aspects in mechanized tunneling (Figure 1). These research themes are each supported by computational models and laboratory investigations and are all included in an SFB overarching Tunnel Information Model (TIM). On April 30, 2003, representatives of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, Inc.(SME) met with the staff of the Division of Corporation Finance of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The meeting was held to discuss issues related to the estimation and publication of mineral resources and ore reserves. It took place in the Washington, D.C. offices of the SEC. SEC staff members included Roger Schwall, assistant director, Division of Corporation Finance; Jill Davis, senior accountant; Roger Baer, senior mining engineer; Carl Chavez, chief mining engineer; Ron Winfrey, senior petroleum engineer; and John Murphy, senior petroleum engineer. SME committee members included JM Rendu, independent consultant and chairman of the SME Committee on Resources and Reserves; Ian Douglas, manager of deposit modeling and reserve estimation with Newmont Mining; Art Graham, director and mining engineer with Deutsche Bank Trust Company Americas; Larry Smith, chief geologist with AMEC Mining and Metals Consulting; and George MacDonald, vice president of exploration with Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold.
