Brazil is presently among the seven largest gold producing countries in the world. This paper discusses the evolution of gold mining through the history of Brazil. It also gives a general account of the present practices for mining, processing and extraction of gold. Flowsheets of some selected plants are presented. The environmental aspects involved with gold production are also considered.

The P.W. Gillibrand Company holds 705 placer and lode claims in the Precambrian San Gabriel Anorthosite Complex of the western San Gabriel Mountains. These claims contain large tonnages of ilmenite, magnetite and apatite with anomalous quantities of zirconium (zircon), niobium, vanadium and rare earth elements. Stockpiling of heavy mineral concentrates associated with aggregate mining from alluvial pits has occurred since 1984. The limited reserves of material from these alluvial deposits and their relatively low heavy mineral grades caused Gillibrand Company to initiate an extensive drilling and exploration program to develop the hardrock resources of ilmenite, apatite and magnetite.

The Berkeley pit-lake was sampled during two seasons, fall 1997 and spring 1998, from the surface to the bottom. Various parameters were measured to determine what effect the seasons had on the water column. It was determined that a seasonal turnover did occur between the fall and the spring sampling; however, the depth of mixing due to turnover could not be established. Trends were observed which suggested that microbial activity was altering the iron speciation at depth, and subsequently masking the extent of mixing. Various trace metals were removed from the surface water by either co-precipitation with schwertmannite or adsorption.

The tailings produced from the Kirki (Agios Filippos) high sulfidation epithermal deposit processing plant are laminated, weakly cemented and their particle size ranges from fine sand to fine silt. They are mainly composed of milling residues of gangue (quartz, dickite/kaolinite, pyrophyllite, illite); sulfides and secondary minerals (jarosite group minerals, butlerite, anglesite, beudantite and gypsum) are present to a lesser extent. They have high Pb and Zn (average 0.75 % and 0.57 % respectively) and low S (1.04 to 2.92 %), Cu, As, Cd, Ni and Sb content (average 248, 163, 59, 27, 20 g/t respectively). Stagnant waters forming small ponds on the surface of the impoundments exhibit low pH and high heavy metal and sulfate concentrations. Negative Net Neutralization Potential (NNP) characterizes the tailings, indicating moderate to high potential for acid generation. Application of the TCLP test revealed that the tailings are characterized as toxic because of the increased solubility of Pb and Cd. On the other hand, As TCLP solubility is very low.

In west-central England, 183 m (600 ft) below the Cheshire Plain, lie the evaporate remains of an ancient sea. Stratified into nine beds of salt separated by marl bands, the deposit stretches roughly 21 x 12 km (13 x 7.5 miles) and contains reserves of rock salt estimated as high as 400 Gt (440 billion st). The Winsford Salt Works, one of England's largest underground mines, extracts the Cheshire salt and sells it for use as animal feed, for application in de-icing programs, and as a key ingredient in sodium fertilizer production and a variety of other industrial processes. Because road de-icing is an important market, demand for Winsford's salt varies with the severity of British winters. Design capacity is 2.25 Mt/a (2.5 million/year). However, production peaked at 2 Mt (2.2 million st) in 1987. Over the past five years, annual production has averaged 1.6 Mt (1.7 million st). Run-of-mine salt averages 92.5% NaCl, mixed with about 5% marl. The marl was formed by deposition of a reddish dust blown into the Cheshire basin from deserts in what is now central Europe. Association with the marl adds color to the salt, producing tea-colored crystals that resemble unrefined sugar. Adaptation of coal mining systems Rock salt mining in the Winsford district began at least as early as 1682. Mining at the current site dates from 1844 but was shut down from 1892 to 1928. In the early 1900s, a series of catastrophic collapses and floods plagued and ultimately shut down then-active Cheshire brine-salt producers. Subsequently, Winsford reopened and began adapting mechanized underground coal mining systems to rock salt extraction.

Man is a short time resident of the planet Earth. He does not have the memory to fully comprehend just what is going on. His span of knowledge can be related to the life of the world to see that this is the case. A museum at Grand Canyon features a geologic clock that compresses Earth's age of 4.5 billion years into 24 hours. Man's estimation of the earth's age has changed radically in the past half century. In 1930, one prominent geologist asserted that the age of the Earth was ". . . at least 600 million years." Later, physicists used radioactive clocks to conclude that the Earth's age was 1.6 billion years. More recently, geologists have found rocks in northwestern Australia estimated to have formed 4.5 billion years ago. As we learn more about what is underfoot, the estimate of Earth's age might change again. The Grand Canyon's 24 hour clock shows that the dinosaurs were the dominant life form for 165 million years. Then an event occurred that wiped them out about 65 million years ago. The prevailing theory is that an asteroid struck the Earth and generated enough dust to wipe out the vegetation upon which most dinosaurs fed. During Earth's existence, there have been at least 12 such mass extinctions - the worldwide disappearance of diverse animal groups. On a planet that has been around for 4.5 billion years and that may continue to exist for another 4.5 billion, it seems reasonable to expect that further mass extinction's will occur. According the Grand Canyon's 24hour clock, the 165 million year reign of the dinosaurs amounted to about five minutes. On that 24 hour clock, the world has been dinosaur free for almost two minutes.

In 1989, for the third consecutive year, both the production and consumption of coal in the United States reached record levels. Domestic coal consumption totaled 806.5 Mt (889 million st) in 1989, a 5.4 Mt (6 million st) increase from the year before (Table 1). US coal exporters also had a banner year. For the first time since 1982, exports ex¬ceeded 91 Mt (100 million st). US coal production in 1989 rose by a surprising 27.3 Mt (30 million st), reaching 889 Mt (980 million st) for the year. To a certain extent, the sizable difference between production and demand growth was due to smaller consumer stock withdrawals. Coal consumers withdrew only 12.7 Mt (14 million st) of coal from their stocks in 1989, com¬pared to 22.7 Mt (25 million st) in 1988. Despite strengthening coal consumption, exports, and production, coal prices to all domestic sectors declined slightly during the year. That essentially continued the trend of the past several years. On the labor front, the United Mine Workers of America struck the Pittston Coal Group in 1989. It was a bitter work stoppage that was not settled until February of 1990. This was the first major coal strike since 1985. The strike also precipitated a series of wildcat outages by UMWA members in June and July. At their peak, more than 40,000 UMWA members participated in the wildcat strikes. Except at Pittston, however, most miners were back to work by August. It is estimated that perhaps 4.5 to 9.1 Mt (5 to 10 million st) of coal production was lost due to the Pittston and associated wildcat strikes. However, some of this production may have been recouped by other coal companies not affected by the wildcat strikes, and by the affected companies after the strikes ended.

The area of flotation testing of drill-core is important in the business plan of most mining companies. Metallurgical information derived from this practice can be used to advantage in strategic decision-making. Sampling, flotation testing and subsequent Qem SCAN analysis of a mineral resource is one example of this approach. Anew resource, located in Sudbury, Ontario, is being assessed for the Sudbury Operations of Falconbridge Limited, which includes the Strathcona Mill. In this case, it was possible to improve the value of information from sampling and flotation testwork by using an improved, statistically-based test design, by sampling the resource by generic end-member ore type, and by integrating the Mineral Processing and Mineral Science disciplines into a Process Mineralogy team. In addition to producing standard metal grade and recovery information, this new approach provides more reproducible information from representative samples and flotation testing in a replicate format. Qem SCAN technology is used to produce a size by size mineral balance, including both modal percentages and liberation, from which flotation models for each ore type can be developed. As a result, a key understanding of the potential behaviour of a given ore type, if mined and then processed at the current mill operation, is gained at the 95%confidence level. The three ore types of this mineral resource were shown to have different flotation characteristics. Quantifying the mineralogy and liberation in each of the three ore types, has shown that this difference is due to changes in modal percentages of ferro-magnesium and magnesium silicate minerals such as pyroxene, talc and serpentine. Liberation across the three ore types is very similar and is therefore not responsible for variation in flotation performance.

Venezuela, once a world's top gold producer until 1886 Witwatersrand discovery, did let fall its role then because of a serious lack of infrastructure and population, and lately (since World war II times), because of discouraging mining and taxation laws, laying upon an oil prizes bonanza. Recent research leading to estimates of about 5.000 mt. of gold, mainly related to the greenstone belts of the Guiana Precambrian shield outcropping in Venezuela, are opening the scope for both Government and international investing and mining companies, for gold exploration and development projects in the country. This paper overviews Venezuelan Gold mining industry, as seen from the point of view of a participating mining company.

The bioleaching of mineral sulfide pulps in a bench-scale rotating-drum reactor was studied. The reactor contained horizontal paddles on the inner wall for lifting the mineral pulp. The performance of the reactor was tested by bioleaching a refractory pyritic gold concentrate in the presence of pure Thiobacillus ferrooxidans (ATCC 19859). The concentrate was efficiently bioleached at a 50% pulp density with the drum operating at from 0.5 to 1.0 rpm. Attempts at bioleaching the concentrate at the same pulp density used in a conventional stirred reactor showed severe inhibition of bacterial activity. The results demonstrated that the drum reactor allows the process to operate at much higher pulp densities than conventional stirred-tank reactors. This results in improved bacterial activity because of better attrition control of the mineral particles.

Refractory gold ores have been processed by bio-hydrometallurgical process at B.R.G.M. (Bureau de Recherches Géologiques et Minières), Research Centre ,Orleans,France. The liberation of gold has been studied and the following steps for gold recovery improved. The overall process flowsheet has been established comprising different ways of treatment before the final discharge of the effluent. Iron and arsenic are successfully precipitated under well controlled Eh-pH conditions. Long term stability tests have been conducted and the research programme is to be continued with the crystallo graphic studies of the precipitates. Economical studies have been performed on the base of data obtained on parameters studies.

This paper describes the application of foam to control respirable dust in a double-drum longwall mining section. The feasibility of injecting an adequate quantity of foam through the shearer drum was initially established in the laboratory. Thereafter, underground testing of the foam system to determine its effectiveness on an active operating longwall was conducted in a mine in West Virginia. The foam system proved superior to the water spray system. The details of the laboratory and field investigations, the results obtained, and the degree of acceptance of this system by the mining company are discussed in this paper.

The Mercur Gold Mine is located 56 km (35 air miles) southwest of Salt Lake City in north central Utah. In July 1981 Getty Mining Company made the decision to put Mercur into production. The first gold bar was poured in April 1983. This paper provides details on: 1) the history of the camp, 2) past production, 3) geology of the deposit, 4) the exploration and development program, 5) ore reserve estimates, 6) detailed geologic pit mapping, 7) production blasthole sampling techniques and 8) the use of geostatistics (kriging) in handling assays and gold extractions to produce the required mill feed.

Crushing and grinding The Crushing and Grinding Technical Committee There was substantial activity in the area of crushing and grinding with the improved outlook in the industry. The Crushing and Grinding Committee's theme of 1987's Annual Meeting in Denver was Fundamentals of Mechanical Design for Crushing and Grinding Mills. At the meeting, the concept of gearless sag mill variable speed drives was taken out of the closet, dusted off, and a wraparound motor was put on hard copy with the ordering of a 9.7- x 4.5-m, 8.2-MW (32- x 15-ft, 11,000-) sag mill. Additionally, comparisons were provided to the mill design of the gearless drive sag mill and the twin 4.5 MW (6000 hp) do variable speed drives placed on the drawing board for the Kennecott UCD Expansions. This involved a 10- x 4.5m, 8.9 MW (34- x 15 ft, 12,000 hp) sag mill. Differing opinions were also expressed in technical presentations pertaining to the need for quality mill specifications in design and manufacturing. J. Berney-Ficklin of Bechtel presented a paper outlining the need for quality design and manufacturing specifications in large scale grinding mills, and the overall cost reduction in capital and operating costs. Others presented differing specific views, but all emphasized a central theme. Quality and reliable designs in large mills should not be compromised. In-pit crushing applications continue to increase, overseas and in the US, in both mining and quarrying. Different in-pit crushing units have been classified as mobile, with integral transport systems; semi-mobile, typically modular systems that use separate transporters for repositioning; semi-stationary plants that must be dismantled before transporting and typically require earthwork and concrete foundation work; and stationary in-pit crushing plants, which remain in place for the life of the pit. The majority of equipment sales of conventional crushing and grinding circuits in 1987 were to gold mining operations. There have been two areas of end use: • conventional jaw/gyratory or impact crushing circuits preparing low grade ores for heap leaching; and • small scale sag/ball mill circuits preparing higher grade ores for classical cyanide leach/ recovery circuits. There was also continued interest in ABC and SABC circuits for both base and precious metals plants. High pressure roll crushers continue to attract considerable interest in the cement industry. There, they are used to prepare raw materials or clinker for subsequent ball/tube milling. However, they have apparently been less successful in the mineral industry where the energy savings/ capacity gains have been much less dramatic. Several papers covering the theory and application of these machines were presented in an industrial minerals session on cement at the SME Annual Meeting. The Third International Conference on Hydrocylones, held in England in October produced several papers of interest on classification and screening to the mining industry. In particular, a new cyclone apex, developed by Mt. Newman Mining, shows promise of reducing water flow to the cyclone underflow stream and, therefore, increased underflow pulp densities and reduced fines recycle in grinding circuits. A twin vortex hydrocyclone was also described and shown to give a sharper split than conventional units. Similar double cyclones were introduced in the 1950's, but failed to achieve widespread acceptance. This was due mainly to a proneness to blockage in the transitional zone. It will be interesting to see whether this latest variant can overcome this problem in the typical operation. A number of North American iron ore plants installed the capability to produce fluxed iron ore pellets. Most chose to grind the stone on site with circuits designed to grind taconite ore. Methods employed to grind this material included single-stage ball mills closed with fine screens, rod and ball mill circuits - both open and closed with cyclones - and semiautogenous mills, followed by ball mills closed with screens or cyclones. Sober, University of Florida Due to tightened environmental regulations and the need for more efficient land use, a greater interest in dewatering and waste disposal has developed. As a result, research efforts in flocculation, surface chemistry, and polymers science have focused on the problems related to the dewatering of solid mineral wastes. Sludge obtained during the production of magnesium (Mg) from molten MgCl2 by electrolysis contains entrapped magnesium particles. The sludge containing the magnesium particles is a friable, continuous matrix of frozen salts that may also contain some oxides and impurities. Due to the high reactivity of magnesium metal with water, a dry process was developed to recover magnesium metal from the sludge. The process utilizes mineral-processing unit operations. The steps include selective comminution, screening, attritioning and tabling. Recovery of the high-grade (>90%) metal was in the 70% range. The novel process was also successfully applied to a magnesium-alloy for the recovery of metal from the sludges.

A reliable estimate of radon emissions to the environment from underground uranium mines was obtained through measurements of radon in ventilation air at 24 mines and from estimates of radon release from other mine sources. The total production of U308 from the mines sampled represents about 63% of the total U.S. production from underground mines (1978 statistics). Wide variation in the radon emission rate per unit of production was found from mine to mine. Using the total radon emitted and U308 produced by all mines sampled, an average of 26.7 Ci of radon was emitted per ton of U309 produced. The investigation includes a brief study of the sources of variation of the emission rates. A statistically significant relationship was found between the measured radon release rate and the cumulative ore production at several mines.

During the last decade, the increasing price of gold has renewed interest in the various metallurgical techniques for recovering precious metals. Much of the recent technology advance has been aimed at low grade deposits resulting in more complex processes and the necessity of tighter economic control. These factors along with more stringent environmental constraints have made it necessary to optimize each process to minimize energy and raw material consumption and reduce waste discharge. In most cases, detailed process analysis is required to detect inefficiencies and provide alternative solutions for process improvement. Also during this same period, the computer has become widely accepted and computerized mathematical modeling has been applied to an increasingly broader range of problems. Microcomputer based process modeling and simulation systems are routinely used to analyze and improve communition, hydrometallurgical, and pyrometallurgical processes for the recovery of precious metals.

Splicing methods have undergone considerable developments over the last 2Oyears. Continuous conveyor belt service is dependent entirely on the strength and life of the splice to hold the two ends together. Ultimately, belting performance is dependent on the quality, efficiency, and technique of the splicer. As customers demand better belting performance and running tensions increase, the need for splices that perform as efficiently as the belting has increased also. Higher dynamic belt constructions have also dictated the need for "new"sp1icing techniques. Regardless of the belt type used or spliced, one item that is most necessary with all belt types is the quality of the workmanship and standardized splicing methods that employ all of the necessary elements required to ensure reliable field service. This paper will explore the use of Goodyear-issued internal standards for field splicing following the constraints of quality and efficiency for fabric and steel cord reinforced belting. Also included are the 10 most common mistakes made by splicers, Goodyear-issued Field Quality Assurance Standards, and check lists for end users to adhere to the manufacturers' requirements for splicing including materials and specifications for conveyor belt splicing and repairs.

The idea of using apron feeders for in directly feeding crushers is not a new one, it has been used for many years. To the best of our knowledge, the first apron feeder was used for bulk material handling in 1893. Since that time many design innovations have been introduced, with perhaps the most effective one being, the application of crawler tractor components in the feeder construction. This design was first introduced to the mining industry in 1954 by, national iron company. These feeders were used in the handling of run-of-mine iron ore on the Minnesota iron range, at the rate of 1,000 ltph. The material was fed over a grizzly to a jaw type of crusher. The crusher output was also handled by an apron feeder. Today, the apron feeder is being used in hard rock surface mine operations feeding crushers at rates of 5,500 ltph and over.

Kola Mining Institute has been carrying out investigations of the possibility to steepen the walls of the Kovdor open pit with the design depth of 600 m. Steeping (up to 60°) wall angles is done by double height (24 and 30 m) benches with vertical slopes. One of the safety factors of mining with such walls is choosing the width of the safety berms preventing against rock falling from the slopes into the pit working area. The test on rock falling from 24 m benches has shown that vertical slopes are not more dangerous compared to the inclined(60-75°) ones.
