Mill liners provide the wear-resistant surface within grinding mills, they also impart motion to the mill charge, ie the grinding process, by providing the key between the charge and mill shell, and, at the discharge end, they remove the ground contents of the mill. As semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills have grown in size the process aspects of liner design and their impact on mill performance have become particularly important. While feedback from practical experience is critical to good mill liner design, increasingly sophisticated computer-based tools are being developed to assist in mill liner design.

Nowadays, fully encapsulated rockbolts have become a key element in the design of ground control systems. The main reason is that they offer high axial resistance to bed separation. In this research, the load transfer capacity of a fully grouted bolt is evaluated analytically in an elastoplastic rock mass condition. The research considered the effect of bolt end-plate on load transfer capacity. Bolt and surrounding materials were assumed to be elastic and elastoplastic materials respectively. The load transfer mechanism of a fully grouted bolt is a function of parameters such as bolt length, shear stiffness of interfaces, in situ stress, presence of face-plate and distance along the bolt. These factors were analytically evaluated. Finally, the load along the bolt was predicted in different surrounding rock mass characteristics.

Two Rivers Platinum Mine (TRP) is a 55:45 joint venture between African Rainbow Minerals and Impala Platinum, respectively. TRP is situated on the farm Dwarsrivier 372KT, in the southernsector of the eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex. Dwarsrivier is underlain by rock formations of the Critical Zone (Winterveld norite-anorthosite) and the Main Zone (Winnarshoek norite-anorthosite). Two economically significant PGE-bearing layers namely the Merensky Reef and the UG2chromitite are found within the upper Critical Zone. These are approximately 140 m vertically apart, separated by a series of barren norites and anorthosites. At Two Rivers Platinum, only theUG2 chromitite layer is currently being mined for PGEs. The UG2 sub-outcrops north/south along the Klein Dwarsrivier river valley with a very gentle dip to the west of 7º?10º. At Two Rivers the UG2 averages about 120 cm in thickness, overlain by a waste pyroxenite parting about 20 cm thick, above which is a leader seam about 20 cm in thickness. The mineable cut consists of the leader seam, the waste pyroxenite parting, the UG2chromitite layer including 25 cm of pegmatoidal pyroxenite footwall, below the UG2 reef to a minimum of 185 cm trackless mining cut. The mining method is a mechanized bord and pillar layout, which will yield a total of 185 000tons at full run of mine production from the underground UG2 mine.

Metso Minerals Cisa have developed VisiofrothTM - a system which calculates parameters of the froth surface using vision from remote cameras mounted about individual flotation cells. The parameters calculated from this system can be utilised within process control strategies to achieve stabilisation or optimisation of the flotation process. As part of a JKMRC AMIRA P9 field campaign, froth vision was collected from various cells operated at different air rates and froth depths within Rio Tinto's Northparkes copper roughing and scavenging circuit. At the same time, samples were collected to determine the cell metallurgical performance at each operating condition. These froth images have been processed using the VisiofrothTM system with froth velocity, bubble size, froth collapse rate and various froth colour parameters calculated. These parameters have been compared to the measured concentrate flow and concentrate grade produced at each condition. This analysis shows that the concentrate tonnage flow is strongly correlated with froth velocity whereas the concentrate grade is best correlated using froth velocity in combination with a bubble stability parameter which affects the bubble size distribution on the top surface of the froth. This paper summarises the results from this analysis as well as an overview of the VisiofrothTM system and the parameters that are measured by the software.

To the members of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy I have audited the annual financial statements of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy set out on pages 641 to 644 for the year ended 30 June 2006. These annual financial statements are the responsibility of the Institute?s Council members. My responsibility is to express an opinion on these annual financial statements based on my audit. Scope I conducted my audit in accordance with International Standards on Auditing. Those standards require that I plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the annual financial statements are free of material misstatement. An audit includes: ?examining, on a test basis, evidence supporting the amounts and disclosures in the annual financial statements, ?assessing the accounting policies used and significant estimates made by management, and ?evaluating the overall financial statement presentation. I believe that my audit provides a reasonable basis for my opinion. Audit opinion In my opinion, the annual financial statements present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of the Institute at 30 June 2006 and the results of its operations and cash flows for the year then ended in accordance with generally accepted accounting practice appropriate to the Institute. A generalization of Gy?s 1979 model for the variance of the fundamental sampling error has been proposed at WCSB2?2005 by Geelhoed. This generalized model can potentially lead to a better correspondence with actual sampling processes. However, a new parameter is required by the new model: ?the parameter for the dependent selection of particles?(Cij). It is important that this new parameter, which is at the basis of the new theory, is well understood in the sampling and blending community. In order to clarify the meaning of Cijand to prevent potential misinterpretation of Cij, we discuss the difference between Cij and an intuitively associated, but different, parameter: ?the parameter for the dependent selection of particle types?(Mij). In this contribution, the theoretical difference between both parameters is clarified. Simulations demonstrate that, numerically, the difference between Cij and Mij can be large. Some additional advantages of the approach which uses Cij are discussed: (i) the approach based on Cijis more general; (ii) in all cases where Mij is known, Cij can be determined as well, while the reverse is not true; (iii) an equation already exists that relates the sample variance to the value of Cij.

Extensions to the beneficiation plant at the Grootegeluk Coal Mine are currently being planned in order to provide power station coal for Escom's Matimba Power Station, presently under construction. A simulation model was developed on the Olivetti M-24 microcomputer to facilitate the development of the envisaged flowsheet. The computer program simulates the heavy-medium separation and screening unit operations. The model is based on the construction of the Tromp partition curve described by an arctangent function, allowing ideal and non-ideal separations. The paper discusses the determination of the parameters required by the arctangent curve from standard process parameters such as Epm, Wolf cut-point, Tromp cutpoint and screening efficiency. The accuracy and shortcomings of the model are discussed, while an overview of the application of the model to evaluate borehole and bulk sample analyses is also given. It is concluded that the model is an invaluable aid to general flowsheet development.

The Bushveld platinum group metal deposits in South Africa are the largest in the world. These deposits occur as two distinct stratiform tabular ore bodies and strike for many hundreds of kilometres. Mining is extensive, with depths ranging from close-to-surface to 2300 m. The mining method is a variation of planar open stoping. Crush pillars are widely used to support the open stopes. These pillars are designed to fail and the residual strength provides the required support resistance to stabilize the stoping excavations. This paper describes the in situ measurement, of stress within a Merensky pillar from Impala Platinum. These measurements were used to derive a stress-strain curve that includes pre and post failure behaviour. 2D FLAC modelling, with strain softening, was done to investigate how damage expands into the hanging- and/or footwall. Although the so-called ?squat? effect is always present, the modelling suggests that it does not dominate the pillar system behaviour at larger width to height ratios. Punching of the pillar into the hanging- and/or footwall increasingly controls the pillar system behaviour with larger width to height ratios. The paper investigates the behaviour of a system that incorporates the immediate hanging- and footwall, as well as the pillar itself.

Over the last several decades mineral concentrate long distance slurry pipelines have been installed and successfully operated. Nearly all were installed via the buried construction method. Their record of depend ability and economy has been well proven. However, these systems operate in regions where seasonal soil frost penetration is shallow or non-existent. In recent years interest in long distance mineral concentrate pipelines in northern cold regions has been increasing. For cold regions one must consider seasonal temperatures and soil frost penetration in order to ensure reliable operations through the year. Herein a case study is developed where heat balance and temperatures for small and large diameter long distance slurry pipelines are compared. The study development is as follows: ?Rheological properties are analysed over range of temperatures from near freezing (4ºC; 39ºF) to relatively very warm (40ºC; 104ºF). ?Then assuming similar climatic conditions, soil properties, and pipeline length, a study is carried out for two pipeline diameters, namely: a small diameter (nominal8 inch; 219.1 mm) and a large diameter (22 inch; 558.8 mm). ?The study focus is on maintaining slurry temperature above freezing throughout the pipeline length by illustrating a decision based on burial depth versus coating the pipeline with insulation.

The objective of the investigation is to optimize the truck and shovel operations for pre-stripping at New Vaal Colliery by introducing campaign mining. The aim of campaign mining is to improve the efficiency of the loading, hauling, dumping, and maintenance operations which are critical to the success of truck and shovel operations. The current loading (single-sided loading method), hauling, and dumping operations at New Vaal Colliery were found to be inefficient. Time studies were used as a major indicator to highlight the inefficiency of the truck and shovel operations, and it is recommended that an improved loading configuration, hauling, and dumping operations be implemented by using campaign mining. It is also recommended that a service truck be used to maintain the pre-stripping fleet in order to reduce travelling times to the main workshop. As expected, the improved operating conditions will lead to an increase in pre-stripping production.

Stress analysis in a rock medium is essential to determine the stress concentration between two consecutive circular holes and prediction of fracture behaviour. When two consecutive circular holes in a hard rock medium such as granite are loaded internally by the pressure of non-explosive expansion material (NEEM), stress concentration occurs between the holes which then causes the rock to fracture. In this work, finite element (FE) analysis using Phase2 code was employed to study the stress concentration between two consecutive circular holes under internal pressure induced by NEEM. Effects of different hole diameters and spacings, rock properties and NEEM pressures have been analysed. The data gained from the numerical analysis and analytical solutions were then used to develop two models. These models were then modified by using the FE data and polynomial regression analysis. The developed analytical models showed to be in a very good agreement with the FE analysis. Hence, the developed models can be used with confidence to determine stress distribution and concentration factors around two consecutive circular holes in a hard and brittle rock which are loaded internally by the pressure induced from the NEEM. Trends in PGM demand?The conference paper will cover a concise analysis of demand trends, which will include the major PGM end-use sectors (autocatalysis, jewellery, glass, petroleum, nitric acid, medical/dental) and will touch on the investment sector. Reference will be made to environmental legislation affecting global emission standards, trends in PGM loadings and the substitutability of platinum and palladium in this end-use sector. Observations will also be made on the jewellery sector, and the development of Chinese and Japanese demand. Trends in primary and secondary PGM supply?Similarly the paper will summarize historic and current global mine supply and primary production trends for PGMs, referencing recent expansions, their deliverability, and other projects coming on line. Consideration will be given to the grade and geology of PGMs worldwide and metallurgical developments. PGMs produced as by-products of base metal production and early PGM recycling estimates will also be appraised. In order to gain a wide-ranging appreciation of the industry?s long-term cost trends of producing virgin PGM metals, the paper will look at the cost and profit dynamics of global production on a regional basis (Western Bushveld, Eastern Bushveld, Northern Bushveld, Zimbabwe, USA, Canada and Russia). Extrapolating tomorrow?s PGM market and forecasting metal prices?Based on established industry trends and market practices Stephen Forrest will conclude by unveiling a variety of thought-provoking extrapolations of today?s and tomorrows platinum, palladium and rhodium markets to conference delegates. Importantly, having highlighted major developing PGM market trends in end-use (specifically on the elasticity of demand to high metal prices), primary and secondary PGM supply trends, in addition to presenting a carefully reasoned forecast of industry supply costs and margin trends, Stephen Forrest will conclude by estimating long-range PGM metal price trends. Acid heap leaching has been extensively applied to the processing of copper oxide ores, with recovery of copper by solvent extraction and electrowinning. Heap leaching has also been extended to the treatment of secondary sulphide copper ores, where oxidative conditions are generated in aerated heaps by the bacterially-assisted oxidation of ferrous iron to ferric iron. The treatment of low-grade chalcopyrite ores has recently been the focus of research, with Mintek playing a prominent role. When processing chalcopyrite ores, more complex column test work is performed, which incorporates the prediction and simulation of temperature behaviour in pyrite-containing heaps. Mintek has devised a trade-marked column leaching apparatus (SmartColumn?) for the simulation of the natural temperature profile development in pyrite-containing heaps. As heap leach applications are becoming more complex, the parameters that need to be built into the design and operation of heap leach plants are growing in number, and the amount of data to be collected and processed, and the number of decisions to be taken daily, are also increasing. Mintek has therefore developed the HeapStar® administrative advisory software, as a guidance system to ensure that the correct protocols are implemented at various stages of the leach cycle.

Gas samples were taken from a wide range of target areas on dumps arising from coal mining activities. Some of the dumps had largely burned out, some were still burning, some were in the process of rehabilitation, and on others rehabilitation was essentially complete. It was found that rehabilitation was very effective in reducing emissions to tolerable levels. Even incomplete rehabilitation reduced the CO2 emissions to less than about 1 kg/m2/a, whereas some unrehabilitated areas showed emissions of over 100 kg/m2/a. Some areas where there was active combustion taking place were also sampled, and they showed as much as 7 000 kg/m2/a, but the areas concerned were very small and their total contribution accordingly low. Analyses were also made for SOx, NOx, NH3, and CH4, but these were generally (and unexpectedly) at very low levels. The mines sampled represented 53 per cent of all surface coal mining activity. Accordingly the estimated total emissions were scaled up, to arrive at estimates of 1950 000 ± 350 000 t/a C02, 2040 ± 580 t/a SOx, 306 ± 85t/a NOx, and 31 ± 9 t/a NH3 for all surface mines. Methane was detected only from burning coal, and due to the difficulty in sampling, no reliable estimate could be made of these methane emissions.

Activated carbons used in the precious metals extraction industry are characterized by large internal surface areas and a great affinity for metal ions. The purpose of this research is to prepare activated carbon from a South African bituminous coal by physical activation that is suitable and cost-effective for use in the extraction of metals. The quality of the coal-based activated carbon may not prove to be as good as activated carbon produced from other traditional sources, but the production costs involved may make South African coal a feasible alternative feedstock. The activated carbons produced were characterized by Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller (BET) surface area, activated carbon pH, and phenol adsorption studies and the results compared to the results from a commercially available activated carbon, Norit RO 0.8 (control sample). Bituminous coals from various sources including Witbank Seam 4 and Free State coal were used in this study. The preparation method chosen was physical activation using superheated steam. The effects of process variables such as activation time (1-3 h) and temperature (600-800°C) were studied in order to optimize those parameters. The activated carbon surface area was characterized by means of nitrogen adsorption isotherms at 77K. BET surface area analysis showed that Witbank Seam 4 coal activated at a temperature of 800°C and activation time of 3 hours resulted in a surface area of 340 m2/g. Quality control of each sample was performed by measuring the pH of a known amount of the prepared activated carbon in distilled water over time. Results showed that the pH of some of the prepared activated carbons reached a value of 11. Phenol adsorption results for the different activated carbons prepared corresponded well to the results obtained for the Norit RO 0.8 activated carbon sample.

For practical reasons all basic input data for the gold mines of the Anglovaal Group conform to a regular grid of averages of sample values within 25-ft squares in the plane of the ore body; individual sample values with their metric co-ordinates are input and converted by a computer program to the basic 25-ft square averages. At the Prieska copper mine the bore- hole data are forced on to a regular grid of 15-m squares corresponding to the coordinates of the grid points nearest to the actual borehole intersections. As for the gold mines the Prieska ore body, although some 3 to 30 m thick, is also dealt with on a two-dimensional basis (Krige, 1973). On the gold mines the data subjected to geostatistical analysis cover: gold values (in cm g/t), uranium values (cm kg/t), and channel widths (cm). The gold and uranium values are normalised on the basis of log (value plus constant) and all the geostatistical analyses are performed on these transformed values. The channel widths usually conform reasonably well to the normal distribution and are, therefore, not transformed. At Prieska the metal grades analysed cover the two main products, copper and zinc, as well as the impurities lead and bismuth; in addition the specific gravity values and the hanging- and foot-wall deviations from a projection plane are also handled. These were all previously used on an untransformed basis but because of problems associated with the proportional effect the lognormal-de Wijsian model is now used for some of the grade variables. This paper presents the results of research on the development and application of a custom-made truck cycle and delay automated data collection system (TCD-ADCS) in a surface coal mining. Truck cycle and delay field data are locally stored in trucks and then synchronized and replicated through a wireless network into a centralized server containing an already-developed integrated production management system (IPMS). The system relies on motion sensing and distance travelled in order to automatically define the cycle starting/ending points, cycle time, position, and delay time. Connectivity and communication between loading equipment and trucks are also established. Communication between the equipment operators and TCD-ADCS system is via a user-friendly graphic interface. The hardware used for the development of this system consists of a rugged touch-screen personal computer, 2.4 GHz radio transmitter antenna, and a commercial GPS receiver. The aim of this study was to develop an in-house tensile testing procedure that would yield accurate and reproducible parameters as input material properties into computational models for numerical simulations of the mechanical behaviour of TM380 mild steel. To achieve this objective, we reviewed the ISO 6892:2009 tensile testing standard along with reported good practice guidelines. Tensile tests were conducted on a dog-bone shaped TM380 mild steel specimen with strain gauges attached on either side, to monitor alignment and measure strain, using three different types of tensile testing machines. Parameters quantified included yield stress, ultimate tensile strength, and modulus of elasticity. The values of these parameters were found to be in agreement with the values supplied by the manufacturer's specification and showed minimal variations between laboratories. Thus it can be concluded that the tensile test procedure used resulted in accurate and reproducible results. The strain values calculated as per standard were in disagreement with those determined from extensometer and strain gauges and resulted in lower elastic modulus values. This confirms that the current testing procedures require the use of long-range strain gauges or extensometer to determine the strain. A chemical analysis was conducted to verify the specification by the manufacturer. The specimen was found to be fairly homogeneous with minor sulphide inclusions. The micrographs reveal a pearlite and ferrite structure typical of mild steel, and the fractographs show a dimpled surface typical of ductile fracture, which is an attribute of mild steel.

The paper addresses pipe flows of aqueous medium-sand slurries at velocities lower than the deposition-limit velocity. Laboratory test results including measurements of particle concentration distributions are used in order to describe a flow with a (pseudo-) linear concentration gradient above a stationary bed. Particle dispersion within the flow is evaluated and a stratification-ratio equation is formulated, estimating a portion of contact load in the flow. The formula is incorporated in the proposed predictive model for the hydraulic gradient for a medium-sand flow above a stationary bed.

In order to add value to South Africa?s gold reserves AuTEK, a joint venture between Mintek and Anglogold-Ashanti, was started in 2000 with the aim of developing new industrial uses for gold. Accordingly gold catalysts are being made in kilogram quantities by Project AuTEK and sold toend users and other interested parties under the trade name AUROliteTM. Although these materials are optimized for use in CO oxidation applications, demonstration of appropriate activity, selectivity and durability in both liquid- and other gas-phase reactions has been shown1. The review below highlights the recent use of these materials, and other gold catalysts, in reactions of commercial interest.
