Anisotropy is a characteristic of intact foliated metamorphic rocks (slates, gneisses, phyllites, schists). ?esting was used to establish the anisotropic behaviour of selected gneissic rocks. The effect of anisotropy on various mechanical properties (strength, deformation) and dynamic properties (wave velocity) was examined. The rock samples were also tested at successively higher confining pressures in order to evaluate the effect of anisotropic behaviour at high overburden pressures. L’ anisotropie characterise les roches foliées (schistes, gneiss, phyllades). Dans ce travail des essais en laboratoire ont été exécutés afin de déterminer le comportement anisotropique des roches gneissiques. L’ effet de l’anisotropie a été examiné par rapport aux propriétés méchaniques (résistance, deformation) et propriétés dynamiques (vélocité ultrasonique). En outre des essais des roches ont été exécutés a des compressions latérales successivement plus grandes afin de déterminer le comportement des roches sous grands charges. Anisotropie ist eine Eigenschaft der geschieferten Gesteine (TonSchiefer, Gneis, Phyllit, Marmor). Versuche wurden durchgeführt, um anisotrope Verhalten von gneis Gesteinen zu ermitteln. Der Einfluss von Anisotropie auf mechanische (Festigkeit, Dehnung) und dynamische Eigenschaften (Wellegeschwindigkeit) wurde bestimmt. Die Dreiaxialversuche wurden unter grossem allseitigen Drücken entnommen, um das anisotrope Verhalten auf grösse herrschende Spannung zu bestimmen.

Understanding the behaviour of plasma arcs is an important part of the design and operation of direct current electric arc furnace smelting processes, which are used in the industrial production of many metallurgical commodities. In recent years numerical and computational modelling techniques have begun to illuminate the complexity of arc behaviour and how it is deeply connected to the thermodynamic and physical properties of the arc plasma. Plasma properties may be estimated from first principles using statistical mechanics methods, but this requires as input some knowledge of the composition of the gas phase that occurs over the process during smelting. In this paper the authors describe a workflow using thermochemistry software to predict the expected gas phase composition through a given process, followed by plasma property calculations using an open-source software tool that has been in development for several years. This tool, 'minplascalc' has been in development for several years and is also described in detail here. The workflow is then applied to the calculation of plasma properties of interest for a variety of historical and current pyrometallurgical processes, and the results are compared. The plasma property data are published in an open-access database for general use.

Magotteaux, with the co-operation of Anglo Platinum, has erected a fully instrumented pilot plant at Frank concentrator, which is being used to study the influence of a variety of grinding parameters. This paper will discuss only the influence of mill speed and pulp density on secondary stage grinding. A Ø0.82 x1 m open circuit mill was used with reclaimed Merensky tailings as feed. The conclusions apply to this pilot plant but further investigation needs to be done to verify whether the same trends will be applicable to a large industrial-scale mill.

Equipment selection in mining operations is an important issue, and also difficult to solve in multiple criteria environments. The paper in question has aimed to develop computer software for solving equipment selection problems in mining. In their paper, Basçetin et al. have analysed two case study problems related to open pit and underground mining method selection. By using Yager?s method1, the authors have selected 18 different criteria in the first case study and 21 criteria in the second case study. However, as emphasized by Ozdemir2, in pair wise comparison matrices the appropriate number of criteria should be seven as the maximum, from the point view of validation, consistency and redundancy. In cases where there are more than seven criteria to be handled, it is suggested that the criteria should be clustered and then the maximum number of clusters and subcriteria of every cluster should be limited to seven4.

Balkema Publishers, Rotterdam, Netherlands. This paper is a study of the ventilation, cooling and refrigeration system design of the Mindola copper mine in Zambia. The challenges that were addressed varied from the restrictions imposed by an ageing infrastructure to the requirement for increasing the annual production rate, coupled to the introduction of a higher level of mechanization while maintaining acceptable conditions and limiting total ownership costs. A description of how the ventilation, refrigeration and cooling systems were modelled in order to obtain the projected heat loads associated with two different mining methods over the life of the project. The methodology included a number of iterations to optimise the design and include aspects such as the expected inrush of hot fissure water, the operation of diesel machinery at depths in excess of 1500m below surface, developing a cost-efficient cooling strategy and selection of the refrigeration machinery to meet the requirements imposed by the cooling strategy. This paper demonstrates the successful implementation of an integrated design approach.

Wire-arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is a directed-energy deposition technology that uses arc welding procedures to produce computer-aided designed parts, such as three-dimensional printed metal components. A challenge of additive manufacturing is the anisotropy. Interstitial elements play a significant role in the mechanical properties of Ti6Al4V of different grades. In this research, the mechanical properties of Grade 5 and Grade 23 Ti6Al4V were compared for this application. Samples were extracted from WAAM-produced Ti6Al4V walls in different directions (horizontal and vertical) and at different positions (top and bottom). The samples were subjected to optical microscopy and tensile and hardness tests. Grade 5 Ti6Al4V samples were found to have greater strength, greater hardness, and lower ductility, owing to the higher content of interstitial elements compared with Grade 23. The bottom samples had higher strength than the top samples, which is attributed to thermal cycling during manufacturing, resulting in different microstructures.

At present, over 85% of the world’s rare earth oxides are produced from the bastnäsite ores, found mainly in China. Meanwhile, the ion adsorption ores are the most important sources for heavy rare earth production. As the demand for rare earth materials in the world increases, other forms of rare earth deposits will become new potential resources of rare earth production in the future. In this paper, flotation performance of a steenstrupine ore from the Kvanefjeld deposit for rare earth recovery was studied through laboratory bench testwork. The effects of various factors including grinding size and collector dosage on recovery and selectivity of the selected rare earth elements, La, Ce and Y, were investigated. A rare earth concentrate with the grades of La 2.8 wt%, Ce 5.1 wt% and Y 1.0 wt% at recoveries of 80.5% La, 79.8% Ce and 55.3% Y was obtained in optimum conditions. Among different pre-treatment methods, a high voltage electric pulse was recently developed and is gaining popularity due to multi-benefits such as pre-weakening along the grain boundaries, as well as size reduction to improve the liberation characteristics. In this paper, the pre-treatment using high voltage electric pulse of lithium-bearing granite ore was studied to understand the morphology through texture, as well as the friability of the particles. To understand the phenomena, SELFRAG, a laboratory facility used for generating high voltage electric pulse and key operating variables were varied. The role of applied voltage (94.5-195.5 kV), number pulse (3-87), and the frequency of pulse (1.3-4.7 Hz) was varied to understand the liberation characteristics as well as energy consumption. Characterisation tools such as optical, and electron microscopy were used to describe the pre-weakening phenomena through textural features. Further, the energy required to break the particle to finer sizes as well as friability were determined and described. The Grootegeluk coal-processing plant treats 3 kt of raw coal per hour to produce a middlings fuel coal and a coking coal fraction with ash contents of 35 and 10 per cent respectively. The plus 0,5 mm fraction is treated by heavy-medium processes, the final top size of the coal being 15 mm. About 400 t of minus 0,5 mm coal per hour is subjected to froth flotation. The routes originally considered for the processing of this fine coal were froth flotation, shaking tables, heavy-medium cyclones, and water only cyclones in combination with froth flotation. The results from tests on the fines arising from a small-trial open-cast mine are discussed. When the froth flotation route was decided upon, further tests were conducted on the selection of the equipment most suited to the particular requirements of this coal and the rest of the plant. Tests using different types of flotation cells and dewatering equipment are discussed. During the commissioning, several operational problems were encountered, and the work done to find the best solutions is discussed.

Difficulties with the screening of large volumes of pulp to remove plus 600 /km material before the adsorption circuit and to retain plus 20-mesh carbon in the adsorption contactors have largely been solved, with the result that the plant can now handle its design throughput. The elution and electrowinning processes have been modified to simplify the circuit, but the regeneration of carbon remains unsatisfactory. The production of fine carbon in the plant can lead to increased gold losses, and this carbon must be collected and treated. Collection methods for fine carbon and some indications of the quantity of the carbon and its gold values are given.

During pillar extraction, sidewall fracturing and spalling at some collieries constitute a severe stratacontrol problem. In order to obtain a better understanding of this phenomenon, a survey of pillar corner conditions before and during pillar extraction was conducted at one particular site. For the various successive mining steps, the vertical stresses on the pillar corners were calculated by use of a three-dimensional boundary element program. A significant correlation was found between the calculated vertical stress prior to the extraction of the panel and the sidewall conditions. During the extraction of the panel, a significant deterioration of the sidewall conditions at a pillar occurred only when the adjacent pillar was mined, causing an increase in vertical stress on the remaining pillar.

A review of real-time particle size analysers A. L. HINDE,. B.Sc., A.R.C.S., D.I.C., Ph.D. The physical principles of different sizing techniques are critically examined in order to evaluate the suitability of the techniques for real-time particle size assessment. Examples of both successful and unsuccessful attempts at producing an acceptable real-time sizer are described in order to delineate the difficulties involved in making rapid and accurate size measurements. Only two of the examples described have proved to be suitable for on-line particle size monitoring, namely the "MintekjRSM Onstream Slurry Sizer" manufactured by Cartner Group, Ltd., and the "PSM System 100" made by Autometrics Co. Both these commercial systems are capable of assessing particle size with an accuracy comparable with that obtained by routine sieving and weighing. The "PSM System 100" has been used successfully for automatic control of grinding circuits. Economic benefits derived from this system, operating under rigorous plant conditions for several months, have proved that real-time size analysers are of significant value to the mining and metallurgical industry.

Despite its growth over the years, necessitating ever¬larger office accommodation, the Gold Fields group changed its head office address in Johannesburg only twice in 94 years. The first move was at the turn of the century, from the then select suburb of Doornfontein to the corner of Fox and Simmonds Streets. The second move was in the thirties, from that address-now the Reserve Bank building-to the well-known address of 75 Fox Street. With the advent of the first mines of the West Wits Line by the end of the thirties, 75 Fox Street proved too small, and the eastern section of the Commissioner Street side of the present head office was added on. In the fifties, when space once more became a serious problem, the old Exploration building was purchased and demolished, and the present west wing on Commissioner Street was built on the site. In the early seventies, cramped conditions again made life difficult and, despite a reorganization of the interior layouts, the need for expansion remained critical. Suggested thermal stress limits for safe physiological strain in underground environments by J. M. STEW ART M.Sc. (Eng) (Witwatersrand) (Visitor) and C. H. WYNDHAM M.B., D.Sc. (Witwatersrand), F.R.C.P. (Land) (Fellow) A comparison of safe temperature limits, based on Mitchell and Whillier's equations for specific cooling power (SCP), with similar limits determined experimentally shows the SCP-based limits to be unnecessarily conservative. It is argued that, while a small part of this conservatism may be attributed to an erroneous extrapolation of the heat transfer dependence on wind speed, the major part is probably due to the use of too Iowa limiting mean skin temperature in the calculation of SCP. A combination of Mitche/l's basic data with results available in the literature permits the derivation of modified heat transfer equations based on data that fully cover the range of wind speeds of interest. These equations, using a mean skin temperature of 36°C as the basis for the calculation of safe temperature limits, are then shown to agree favourably with those determined empirically. Furthermore, values of SCP based on these equations are shown to correlate reasonably well with wet kata readings, giving positive support to the wet kata thermometer as a heat stress meter.

Mine dumps created in terms of the pre-MPRDA regime (old order mine dumps) are currently not regulated by the MPRDA, and the common law owners of such dumps are free to process them without the need to obtain the relevant rights. The MPRDA Amendment Act purports to change this position. However, the wording of the Amendment Act raises a number of problems which render the post-amendment position at best unclear and at worst absurd and unworkable. The primary concern with the Amendment Act is that, on one interpretation, material placed on the same dump at different times may be treated differently at law. Thus, parts of a dump may be subject to one person?s right while others may be subject to another?s right. Moreover, case law has generally regarded mine dumps as movable property and, by extending the MPRDA to apply to all mine dumps, the Legislature is extending the ambit of the Act to cover movable property, a scenario not contemplated by the wording of the Act (even after its amendment) in relation to applications for rights. The better interpretation of the amendments, which are not yet in force, is that they will not apply retrospectively to old order mine dumps.

Abstract: The amount of published literature pertaining to the field of rock mechanics has increased markedly in recent years. Whilst computer applications aid our understanding of the mechanisms of pillar instability, the applications do not take into account the effect of time; thus the determined pillar factor of safety has limited meaning. A more realistic approach would be to consider pillar stability in terms of time to failure. However such an approach would require a reasonable estimate of the in-situ pillar mass strength and a validated methodology linking the time to failure with in-situ pillar mass strength and the geometric layout of the working. Résumé: Le volume de bibliographie au sujet de la mécanique des roches a augmenté considérablement ces derniêres années. Alors que des modeles informatiques aident a la compréhension des mécanismes d'instabilité de pilliers, ces modèles ne prennent pas en compte les effets du temps; ainsi, la determination du coefficient de surete du pillier a un sens limité. Une approche plus réaliste devrait considérer la stabilité du pillier en fonction du temps de défaillance. Cependant une telle approche exigerait une estimation raisonnable de la resistance du massif rocheux du pillier ainsi qu'une méthodologie qui lie le temps de défaillance avec la résistance in-situ du massif rocheux du pillier et la géometrie de l'excavation souterraine. Zusammenfassung: Die Anzahl der Veröffentlichungen auf dem Gebiet der Felsmechanik ist in jüngster Zeit sehr gestiegen. Computerprogramme sind wertvoll um den Mechanismus der Pfeilerunbeständigkeit zu verstehen, aber sie vernachlässigen den Zeiteffekt. Daher haben die errechneten Sicherheitsfaktoren der Pfeiler nur begrenzte Bedeutung. Eine realistischere Bewertung wäre, die Stabilität der Pfeiler auf Grund der Zeit bis zum Verfall zu beurteilen. So ein Verfahren würde eine Schätzung der in-situ Gebirgsfestigkeit und eine validierte Methologie, die die Zeit zum Verfall in Abhängigkeit der in-situ Pfeilerfestigkeit und der geometrischen Auslage der Grube zusammenbringt, brauchen.
