President's Award Professor Jannie van Deventer, Head of the Department of Metalurgical Engineering at the University of Stelenbosch, has been honoured with one of the five President's Awards for 1990. In the 21st century, dynamic, accurate digital 3-D geological models are essential to the pursuit of safe, efficient and profitable mining. This is particularly true for the deep-level underground mines in South Africa. The Sirovision® solution is a collaboration project between the Australian CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation), Datamine Software Ltd. and AngloGold Ashanti Ltd (AGA). The purpose of the project is to provide a fully integrated digital rock face imaging, geological mapping and modelling system for the AGA gold mining operations. The CSIRO-developed Sirovision® Stereo Camera Rig (SCR) consists of two digital cameras, alighting system, a laser guidance system and image processing software. The imaging system works on the principles of photogrammetry, i.e. overlaying of two 2-D images with a central focus point, with mathematical algorithms extracting 3-D information from the 2-D image pair. The output from matching several image pairs is a computer-generated, full 3-D, virtual copy of the mining excavation. The image resolution and relief ares of sufficient quality to distinguish different rock types and structural contacts. Functionality within Datamine Studio3 is used to add geological intelligence to the 3-D images provided by Sirovision®. The geologist identifies and ?draws? lines representing geological features directly onto the image. By utilizing the inherent ?topography? of the 3-D image, the software is able to convert the lines into 3-D surfaces, ready for use in the 3-D geological model. Subsequent to promising underground test results from AGA?s Sunrise Dam Gold Mine (SDGM) in Australia and other mining operations worldwide, it was decided to test the Sirovision® system in the South African deep-level gold mines. The first underground tests at Moab Khotsong Mine began in January 2009. The objectives of these tests entailed the capturing of 3-D images of selected development ends, mapping of geological features onto the 3-D images and integration of the mapping data with the 3-D geological model. Some downsides have cropped up during the feasibility testing, related to practicality of the SCR for acquisition of 3-Dimagery in the deep-level underground operating environment. These constraints will have to be addressed prior to operational implementation. Facing such difficulties is not unusual when attempting to implement new technology in such a challenging working environment and testwork is still in progress at the mine in order to prove the concept of using this technology in a Witwatersrand underground gold mine. The great advantage of the Sirovision® solution is that it offers the geologist the opportunity to work remotely on a 3-D virtual copy of a mining excavation, without the heat, humidity, hazards and time constraints associated with physical mapping in an underground workplace.

After that he lectured in the Departments of Chemical Engineering at the Universities of the Witwatersrand and Natal. From 1968 to 1973, he was Leader of the Chemical Engineering Research Group of the National Institute for Metallurgy at the latter University. Mr C.E. Fivaz, Pr. Eng., is Chief Consulting Metallurgist of Rand Mines (Mining & Services) Limited, and is responsible for the metallurgical activities of the Gold and Uranium Division and the Coal and Base Minerals Division of the Group.

Over many decades, numerous feasibility studies have demonstrated, that the production of sulphuric acid remains the most viable option of sulphur recovery from smelter off gas and abatement of SO2 emissions to the atmosphere. This is particularly more pronounced as smaller but more concentrated off-gas flows are to be treated from smelters, and enhanced sulphuric acid processes be-come available. Off-gas handling systems represent a significant capital and operating cost burden to the metallurgical operation. Modern pyrometallurgical smelter processes for sulphide ores based on the use of oxygen-enriched air, produce relatively small off-gas flows with high SO2 concentrations in the smelter gas of 30?60 %-vol. of SO2. This is a prerequisite for substantial cost reductions in the smelter off-gas handling and treatment system. As an alternative to sulphuric acid production, numerous scrubbing concepts with alkali or dual-alkali combinations as well as organic absorbents have been proposed. Also the reduction of the SO2 to elemental sulphur has frequently been studied. Very few of those alternative processes have been built in industrial scale, but all were generally characterized by none sustainable operation due to cost reasons, problems with issues related to chemicals used and by-products or poor availability. Thus the traditional concept of converting the SO2 to sulphuric acid is most common, although regarded as un-economic, but is at least a proven, environmentally sustainable and reliable way of sulphur gas processing. With the high acid price levels these days, operating companies are even able to generate significant revenue with their otherwise ?fatal? acid. Even though smelter gas is available at high SO2 concentrations, in a conventional acid plant one would add large amounts of air to dilute the gas down to a suitable concentration of 12?13 (14) %-vol. SO2. Dealing with higher SO2 concentrations in smelter acid plants is not feasible, as the gas exit temperature of the catalytic oxidation step would exceed the allowable limit for the catalyst. Hence those conventional acid plants are characterised by the use of large equipment, i.e. high capital cost, high energy consumption and limited flexibility. The newly developed LUREC® process can handle off-gas with significantly higher gas concentrations, even in excess of 25 %-vol. SO2. It is entirely based on well-proven equipment and unit operations. The first industrial application, operating with 16?18 %-vol. SO2 will be presented in this paper, along with the fundamentals of the process. It will be demonstrated that the process requires inherently lower capital cost, fewer operating cost, offers better energy recovery and lower emissions as compared to conventional design. While most existing smelter acid plants would have some built-in spare capacity, any significant increase of smelter capacity, say of 30%, can basically not be accommodated without installing an additional parallel new acid plant unit. An add-on LUREC® module can remove any such restriction, while simultaneously de-bottlenecking the existing acid plant. The paper also discusses the present status of the add-on technology for smelter acid plant expansions with respect to technical boundary conditions of different process alternatives as well as economic and environmental aspects. Application of the LUREC® process to modern smelter acid plants operating with high SO2 gas concentration, will lead to a substantial reduction of the specific size of the gas processing equipment and equivalent savings in capital and operating cost. "This study evaluates the efficiency of using mechanochemical reduction to assist the extraction of zinc from zinc ferrites by alkaline leaching. The transition of zinc ferrite into a metastable state after mechanochemical reduction with metallic iron contributes to the ready dissolution of zinc from the activated zinc ferrites in alkaline solution. Zinc ferrites were mechanochemically reduced under conditions of Fe:ZnFe2O4 mole ratio of 2:1, using 5 mm diameter stainless steel balls as the activation medium at a mass ratio of balls to raw materials of 25:1. Subsequent leaching in 6 mol/L NaOH solution at 90°C resulted in more than 70% Zn extraction. These results may be used to further develop a hydrometallurgical process for recovering zinc from zinc ferrites in alkaline solution.IntroductionZinc is an important nonferrous metal required for various applications in batteries, solder, dielectric materials, and piezoelectric materials. High-grade, easily concentrated ores are becoming scarcer: to meet world demands for zinc, it is necessary to develop economical and environmentally safe metallurgical technologies that use secondary materials such as leach residues of roasted zinc concentrates and electric arc furnace dusts. The zinc in the majority of these wastes occurs in the form of zinc ferrite (franklinite, ZnFe2O4), which is very stable and insoluble in most acidic and alkaline solutions (Langova and Matysek, 2009; Youcai and Stanforth, 2000).Several pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processes (Jankovi et al., 2014; Langova and Matysek, 2010; Morcali et al., 2012; Shawabkeh, 2010) have been proposed for the treatment of zinc ferrites. Pyrometallurgical methods are costly owing to high energy consumption and their emissions of toxic gases are considered an environmental problem; hydrometallurgical methods are preferred for process economy and environmental reasons (Copur et al., 2004)."

A wide range of drill holes and process streams are sampled for resource estimation, grade control and contractual purposes in the minerals industry. However, despite the availability of training courses, conferences and both national and international standards on correct sampling practices, it is still surprising how often little attention is given to ensuring that representative samples are collected for analysis. The reason for this is that the responsibility for sampling is often entrusted to personnel who do not appreciate the significance and importance of sampling, with cost being the main driving force rather than whether the sample is representative of the material from which it was extracted. This seriously undermines the precision and accuracy of the analyses subsequently generated and can render the analysis process a total waste of time and money and expose mining companies to serious, potential, financial losses. Company management needs to reverse this situation and ensure that sampling is given the attention it deserves to generate representative samples for analysis.

The assessment of overall modulus (or stiffness) of a fractured weak to moderately strong rock mass is a key parameter in the design of civil engineering works in these materials. It also provides the highest level of uncertainty due to scale effects, anisotropy and the influence of joint frequency and joint stiffness. Using the example of the Melbourne Mudstone, this paper compares approaches using empirical rules based on intact rock strength, laboratory testing, in situ field testing, semi-quantitative assessment techniques based on rock mass classification and back analyses. In 1991 the Government of the Republic of Zambia passed legislation providing for the privatisation of Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Limited (ZCCM). The newly formed Mining Companies, established after nearly a decade of difficult and protracted negotiations on such matters as, cash at close; retained percentage interest by ZCCM; equity investment; future investment commitment and tax concessions, were faced with great internal challenges and a harsh external environment. There was a convergence of a number of negative forces that had and will continue to have an impact on the mining environment in Zambia. The most crucial of these being, the competitive pressures of the global economy, fluctuating copper price and the prevailing HIV/AIDS pandemic. In the short period after privatisation, the Industry has seen the collapse of Binani Industries (Luanshya Mine), the withdrawal of Anglo America Corporation from Konkola Copper Mines Plc and the disposal of Chambishi Cobalt and Acid Plants by Anglovaal Mining Ltd. The objective of this paper is to provide a theoretical and practically researched foundation, which may be used to assist Zambian Mining Companies in making informed decisions on the issue of Strategic Outsourcing and the degree to which this may support the successful and sustainable growth of the Zambian Copper Mining Industry. If judiciously implemented, Strategic Outsourcing has the potential to generate a practical business valuation and process to assist Mine Management in the achievement of their business goals and consequently the return on investment to their Shareholders.

Abstract : The computation of reliability index or failure probability of slopes can be transformed into an optimisation problem. In high rock slope engineering, it is usually a multimodal optimization problem. The traditional optimization techniques are difficulty to find out the global optimal solution because of their easily falling into local optimal value. Recently, a new kind of bionic algorithm - ant colony algorithm (ACA) - has been used to solve this problem. In this paper, the structure of ant colony algorithm and the transfer probability of ants are modified to evaluate the failure probability of complicated slopes. A new adaptive ant colony algorithm (AACA) is proposed to determine critical slip surface and its corresponding failure probability of complicated slopes. A case study is given to verify the proposed approach. The results show that the presented method has obvious advantages compared with traditional methods. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Die Rechnung des Zuverlaessigkeitindexes oder der Zerstoerungswahrscheinlichkeit kann sich in einer Optimierungsfrage umwandeln, im Bauprojekt an hoehe Gebirgehang, handelt es sich meistens um eine Optimierungsfrage ueber Multi- Spitzenwert. Mit der traditionelle Optimierungsmethode ist es schwer eine umfassende Loesung fuer die Optimierung zu finden wegen des leichte Verfallens in Beschraenkung der Teiloptimierungsloesung. Mit dem neue Bionik- Algorithmus —— Ameisen - Kolonie- Algorithmus wird dieses Problem geloest. In diesem Text hat man eine Strukturverbesserungsloesung fuer das Ameisen- Kolonie -system und die Wahrscheinlichkeit der Ameisenkolonie erwaehnt, und damit wird man die Zerstoerungswahrscheinlichkeit des komplizierte Hangs feststellen. Mit dem neuen Ameisen- Kolonie- Algorithmus kann man die gefaehrlichste Gleitflaeche und die entsprechende Zerstoerungswahrscheinlichkeit herausfinden. Die in diesem Text beschriebene Methode wurde durch Praxis geprueft. Durch die Pruefergebnisse wurde es gezeigt und bestaetigt, dass der neue Bionik- Algorithmus vorteilhafter als der traditionelle Algorithmus ist. Résumé : Le calcul de l’indice la fiabilité ou de la probabilité de ruptures peut être transformé en un problème de l’optimisation. Pour le cas du génie des pentes de haut rocher , le problème se pose en général en l’optimisation de multi-crêtes. Les techniques traditionnelles conduisent facilement à la solution optimal partielle au lieu de celle globale. Récemment un nouveau type de bionique algorithmique a été appliqué pour la solution de ce genre de problèmes, c’est l’Algorithme Colonie de Fourmis. Dans l’article il est proposé de modifier la structure du système de la colonie de fourmis et la probabilité de transfert des fourmis en vue d’évaluer la probabilité de ruptures des pentes de haut rocher complexes, par ailleurs un nouveau algorithme adapté de colonie de fourmis est formulé pour déterminer la surface glissante critique et la probabilité de ruptures correspondante. Les techniques proposées dans l’article sont vérifiées à travers des expérimentations dont les résultats ont prouvé que les techniques présentées dans l’article sont évidemment meilleures que celles traditionnelles.

The gas-based CO reduction of Panzhihua vanadium titanomagnetite concentrate from 1100°C- 1250°C was investigated in this paper. The reduction degree increased with increasing temperature and increasing reduction time. At a temperature of 1250°C and a reduction time of 20 minutes, the metallisation degree reached 92%. The iron-titanium oxide phase transformation during reduction process was Fe2.75Ti0.25O5→Fe2.5Ti0.5O4→FeTiO3→FeTi2O5 according to the X-ray diffraction analysis. The SEM and map scan by energy spectrum of results of reduced samples at different temperatures indicated that the metallic iron particle size increased gradually as the reduction temperature increased. The conventional truck and shovel haulage system has become expensive to operate in most mines due to current strict environmental conditions, increase in depth and size of open-pit mines, increase in labour costs, and fuel costs. These factors have motivated the search for alternative material haulage options in open-pit mines. In-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) system has been regarded as a plausible alternative in material haulage systems. However, usage of IPCC has been limited to a few mines due to limited knowledge of IPCC performance, and other technical factors of the system. This paper investigates, and evaluates the productivity performance of four types of IPCC systems (fixed, semi-fixed, semi-mobile, and fully mobile IPCCs) using mine productivity index (MPi). Using a model developed by MATLAB, the MPi for the four systems is computed using input variables such as availability, utilisation, performance and number of trucks and shovels in a limestone quarry. The mine productivity index for fixed, semi-fixed, semi-mobile, and fully mobile IPCC is obtained as 67.13%, 69.02%, 70.52%, and 71.52% respectively. In conclusion, the fully mobile in-pit crushing and conveying system is the most appropriate IPCC in the quarry, due to its better productivity performance compared to the other three IPCC systems and the truck and shovel system currently in use.

Anionic surfactants, such as oleic acid and sodium oleate (OLE), and cationic surfactants, such as dodecyl amine-hydrochloride (DDA), are used as flotation collectors of spodumene. However, recovery is poor even if activating ions are used because gangue minerals are also activated. Some reports demonstrate that OLE/DDA mixtures act as a selective collector to enhance spodumene recovery. From mostly macroscopic tests, it has been argued that anionic OLE and cationic DDA form electroneutral complexes, which are adsorbed on the mineral surface through chemisorption; however, no molecular evidence has been presented. Therefore, the adsorption mechanisms of the collector mixtures remain mostly unknown. It seems necessary to first study the behaviour of these surfactants confined in salt solutions, to determine auto-associations when they are pure and cross-associations when mixed, the transition from monomers to micelles, and the structure of the micelles and the effects of pH, temperature and concentration. In this paper, ab initio calculations are first used to determine the surface charge distribution of OLE and DDA separately. Then molecular dynamics simulations are used to determine the conformation, aggregation, and diffusion of these pure and mixed surfactants in freshwater and saltwater with the ionic strength of seawater in a pH range. In particular, it is interesting to determine the various associations that result in mixtures of both surfactants and the impact of alkali and alkaline earth metal cations on the structures formedp. Cations influence the order of the structure and orientation of water dipoles, reducing the mobility of water, ions, and surfactant molecules. Biooxidation, and especially the BIOX® process, is a viable, economical and environmentally attractive process to liberate gold hosted in refractory sulfides by oxidatively leaching the sulfides as soluble sulfates. The moderate to high cyanide consumption during the subsequent cyanidiation of the washed biooxidation residue is probably caused by the retention on the solids of labile sulfur species formed during the multi-electron oxidation process of sulfide to sulfate. In this work the nature and mode of transport of the cyanicides in the products from the mesophile BIOX® process, as well as that of the combined mesophile and thermophile bioxidation process, were considered and strategies to reduce cyanide consumption evaluated. It was found that labile sulfur species were the major cyanide consumers in the mesophile biooxidation product, forming predominantly thiocyanate during cyanidation. The transfer of labile sulfur species was only marginally decreased by more intensive and thorough washing of the biooxidation products with warm and hot water, intense stirring and warm caustic leaching. A major reduction in cyanide consumption was however achieved by using a combined mesophile and thermophile biooxidation process. The primary focus of management today is safety, or preventing negative, generally irreversible, events of acute duration. The outcomes of safety-related events are usually visible and can evoke strong emotions if the results are severe. Experts now see that occupational illness and disease also result in significant emotional and financial toll to workers, their families and communities, and to their employers. Effective health and safety management must include acknowledging the importance of occupational health hazards and the proportionate application of resources to address those issues. Improvement in workplace conditions and decrease or elimination of illness and disability are due to actions within the workplace and result from the implementation of risk prevention and control measures. However, success may only be visible months or years later and may require interventions that have to be maintained over prolonged periods. This demands continuous, co-ordinated effort to ensure sustainability of diverse occupational health programmes and the relevant management systems. Too often occupational health is not seen as being part of the general management of business, but rather the function of a medical practitioner somewhere off site in a clinic. Integration of occupational health management systems with other management systems within an organization is essential for its success.

The Konkola Mine, a subsidiary of the Konkola Copper Mines Plc (KCM) which is owned by the Vedanta group of companies of India and Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Holding limited, is located at Chililabombwe in the northern extension of Zambia's Copperbelt province. In its operations, the mine has been experiencing problems in ascertaining the optimum degree of fineness and the operating density of the hydrocyclone overflow in order to achieve high flotation performance. It was believed that recovery of sulphide copper minerals from Konkola ore is a function of the fineness of the grind so that it might be an economical justification to modify the grinding plant in order to run at lower cyclone overflow densities than the case is now. In an effort to improve these operations, it was decided to carry out test work on various hydrocyclones of sizes 0.381 m, 0.4575 m and on 0.508 m. The later was found to give satisfactory results and was installed on the plant. Despite giving satisfactory results there was need to investigate further to establish the working densities and size. Increasing the density of cyclone overflow decreases the per cent passing 75 pm at least in the range 1080-1 150 g/l. Furthermore, hydrocyclones give better separation at low densities of feed and hence the efficiency is high at low feed densities. Circulating load increases with an increase in feed densities and an decrease in the grind. The flotation performance in both sulphide and oxide copper minerals rougher stages is enhanced with an increase in the degree of fineness of the grind, with an optimum being obtained at a density of 1 150 g/l and 81.4% passing 75 µm. Chile is the main producer of copper in the world and lately the mining industry has suffered challenges due to the lack of water in the north of the country, along with the new policies of not using fresh water for the industry. This has prompted the use of seawater as an alternative source for mining. Several studies have been driven due to this new scenario, which have shown that seawater can be beneficial, if certain ions are removed from the process. This is the Mg that generates precipitates at high pH, that have been shown to make mining operations difficult. In particular, thickening operations are impaired by the presence of Mg ions, where aggregate formation and sedimentation decreases substantially. Our studies suggest the competence of the precipitates in adhering to the polyacrylamide (HPAM) flocculant and not towards the surface of the quartz minerals. This motivates the present work to use molecular dynamics to study the adsorption of a HPAM molecule on quartz surfaces and the surfaces formed by Mg precipitates. The surfaces are immersed in a saline solution or seawater that includes the HPAM molecule. Results are obtained by measure the adsorption frequency and duration. We obtained that the HPAM molecules are preferably absorbed on the surfaces of magnesium hydroxide. This gives us a good agreement with what is observed experimentally and strengthens the premise of the competition of hydroxide with the flocculant. This study investigated flotation of phosphate from a low-medium grade 8-12% P2O5, 65-73% SiO2 sedimentary phosphate ore from Kropz Elandsfontein (herein referred to as Elandsfontein) in South Africa. Quantitative evaluation of minerals by scanning electron microscopy (QEMSCAN) was used to determine apatite grain size distribution, liberation and mineral association in the F2 horizon sample. The mineralogy indicated that apatite was liberated and for the Elandsfontein plant to operate at the design throughput, the flotation feed has to be milled to a coarse grind ranging between 300 μm and 425 μm. Reverse flotation process routes using varying reagent dosages, and flotation feed top sizes that could possibly yield a final product of 31% P2O5,10% SiO2 at a reasonable +70% P2O5 recovery were investigated. Based on the results, a split circuit of coarse (-300+212μm) flotation and fine (-212+20μm) flotation, was mostly preferred as compared to treating the whole ore. A final combined concentrate of 31% P2O5 and 10% SiO2 with P2O5 recovery of 84% could be produced from the reverse split circuit. The robustness of reverse flotation for both coarse and fine fractions was further investigated. Reverse flotation of the fines fraction was found to be robust and produced a final product of 31% P2O5. It was however more challenging to achieve the required product grade and recoveries on the coarser fraction (-425+212μm), suggesting that reverse circuit was not adequately robust at fractions coarser than 300μm. Recycling has become an important part of the lithium-ion battery (LIB) life cycle due to the growing demand for energy storage in applications like electric vehicles and renewable energy. Recycling spent LIBs provides a secondary source for strategically scarce metals, like lithium and cobalt, helping to reduce the environmental impact of LIBs. Organic acids have been proven to be effective lixiviants with the benefit of reduced environmental impacts, amongst which citric acid has shown to exhibit similar extraction performance when compared to mineral acids. Leaching LCO and NMC batteries with 1.5M citric acid and 2 vol.% H2O2 at 95°C, 20 g/L for 20 minutes achieved 93% Al, 90% Co, 96% Li, 94% Mn and 94% Ni dissolution. The strong chelating property of citric acid affects the separation of the metals, providing unique extraction opportunities. The first extraction uses 12 vol.% D2EHPA at a pH of 2.5 and O/A ratio of 2 to separate 96.4% Mn and 100% Al from the PLS in two counter-current stages. Stripping the loaded organic with 1.25M citric acid at an A/O ratio of 3 allows for up to 91% stripping of the manganese in a single stage. The second extraction then separates 96.5% Li from the PLS in three counter-current stages using 20 vol.% D2EHPA at a pH 5.5 and O/A ratio of 5. The comparison study on adsorption of potassium normal butyl xanthate (PNBX) and sodium (nbutyl) dithiocarbamate (SNBDTC) on sperrylite mineral forms a basis in understanding the floatability improvement and paves a way for the design of collectors that may impact on a wide range of arsenide minerals. This study used a computational density functional theory (DFT) and experimental microcalorimetry approach to determine the adsorption energies of PNBX and SNBDTC collectors onto a sperrylite mineral surface. From a computational aspect, we considered the most stable surface plane of (100) surface, which had been found to give the lowest surface energy, compared to the other surface planes. It was observed that the PNBX and SNBDTC preferred to bridge on the As and Pt atoms through the S atoms. These findings showed that the collector adsorbed on the surface through both Pt and As atoms and indicated that the As atoms were significantly active in the adsorptions. We found that the adsorption energies were in the order: SNBDTC (–278.38 kJ/mol) > PNBX (–270.92 kJ/mol), indicating that the dithiocarbamate had stronger exothermic adsorption than the xanthate. From the microcalorimetry test it was also found that the SNBDTC was more exothermic than the PNBX and the adsorption energies were: SNBDTC (–473.50 kJ/mol) > PNBX (–331.13 kJ/mol). These results showed that the nitrogen atom in the SNBDTC collector had a great influence on the adsorption strength of the collector on the mineral surface. This is due to the electron deposition behaviour of nitrogen atoms compared to the electron withdrawing character of oxygen and as such the SNBDTC showed better collecting ability than the PNBX. These results paved the way for the design of collectors for sperrylite and other arsenide minerals and suggested that nitrogen in a collector may significantly improve the ability of the collector for improved recovery.
