5.1 Incorporation with the Master Design Simulator Figure 1 diagrammatically illustrates the interaction between the various sub-systems that go to make up the total Master Design Simulator. As a total system, all sub-systems will be scheduled as needed by the controlling program. The data require¬ments for each will be made available either by providing common storage in core or by outputting data to external storage devices such as magnetic tape, disk, drum, etc. The incorporation of the Geology and Reserves sub-system into the total system involves the establishment of an interface through which data may be readily dissemminated in either direction. This interface will be provided by a geological data library in which all information available from the sub-system is stored and can be readily accessed by the main program and/or other sub-systems. In Figure 7, the information flow between the Geology and Reserves sub¬system and other sub-systems is shown. 5.2 Independent Function Geology and Reserves sub-system is capable of functioning as an independent unit or in direct communication with another sub¬system. This is possible by either continued use of the data library or by redirecting output to other peripheral devices separate from the total system libraries. (Figure 8).

The final 26 tables of this chapter, tables 25-50, extend and expand the statistical series on production that was started in the 1963 edition of the "Area Reports: International" volume of the "Minerals Yearbook" and that was subsequently updated and expanded in the 1965 and 1967-89 editions. Continuing the practice started in 1989, a column has been included in each of these tables providing a 5-year average for 1986-90, inclusive. This should provide a clearer picture more rapidly of the role of each major producer over the 5-year period. The listing order of major producers, however, continued to be, as in past years, in descending order of rank in the year of review, 1990. With the inclusion of silver and uranium in the 1988 edition of this chapter, this group of tables now includes each of the crude minerals that ranked from 1st to 19th in 1983 terms of value of their output (as well as four others of lesser rank). These 23 crude mineral commodities accounted for 93% of the estimated value of world crude mineral production in 1983. In addition, world output of five key downstream products-aluminum, steel, cement, nitrogen in ammonia, and refined oil-are included because of their significance as products.

The appraisal of mineral resources of the Challis National Forest, Idaho, by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, was made so that the mineral resources of the forest could be appropriately considered in land use planning. Information from this study is intended to help the U.S. Forest Service to incorporate mineral resource data into forest plans. The study was done in conjunction with the U.S. Geological Survey, which released a companion report on the geology and mineral potential of the Challis National Forest in 1989. Mineral development activity in and under the Challis National Forest has been of great economic significance to Idaho and the United States. Since the 1960's, mines within the forest have produced mineral commodities worth more than $590 million A current (1989) commodity prices. Identified mineral resources have a gross value of about $2 billion at current prices, including 8 strategic or critical minerals. The U.S. Bureau of Mines study identified and described 723 active and inactive mineral properties within the forest. Mineral properties with identified resources were evaluated to determine their economic significance, and an assessment was made of the feasibility of mineral development. Of the 2,516,191 acres in the Challis National Forest, about 390,000 acres were classified as having mining development interest commercially important mineral production, mainly of molybdenum, gold, and silver from the Challis National Forest is likely for the foreseeable future.

The U.S. economy grew moderately in the second quarter of 1985 with real gross national product (GNP) recording a seasonally adjusted annual growth rate of 2.0%, up from the 0.3% growth of the previous quarter but significantly below the 7.1% growth of the second quarter of 1984 (table I). Personal consumption expenditures grew 5.3%, with purchases of durable and nondurable goods rising 7.4% and 5.1 %, respectively; nonresidential and residential fixed investment--the two components of fixed investment--grew 11.8% and 5.6%, respectively; and Government spending rose 3.6%. However, these gains were tempered by a major decline in the growth of business inventories (from $19.1 billion to $8.3 billion) and the continuing growth of the net export deficit (from -$28.4 billion to -$33.3 billion). While the high value of the dollar compared with other currencies has been a major cause of the expanding trade deficit, its value, as measured by the monthly Federal Reserve Board (FRB) multilateral trade-weighted dollar index, has declined over 17 index points from its February peak to 140.94 in July. The July dollar value was still high historically. The rate of inflation, as measured by the fixed-weighted price index for GNP, remained low at 4.1%, down from 4.3% in the first quarter, and employment continued to grow at a rate sufficient to keep up with new additions to the labor force. Civilian unemployment has remained steady at 7.3% over the past 6 months. Industry Statistics The FRB recently revised its index of industrial production and changed the base year from 1967 to 1977,1/ The revised total index shows a 0.1 % higher annual growth rate between 1967 and 1984 than the previous index. In the slower growing or declining industries, such as metal mining, primary metals, and fabricated metals, however, downward revisions in the indices and rates of growth have occurred. The previous and revised annual rates of growth between 1977 and 1984 for several of the sectors of interest to the mining industry are shown in table 2.

"INTRODCJCTJONPlatelet activating factor (PAF) is a glycerophospholipid (1-0-alkyl-2-acctyl-sn-glycerol-3-phosphoryl choline) which has been shown to mediate a broad range of biological activities. 1·3 Its pulmonary actions include contraction of pulmonary tissue,4 secretion of leukotrienes from leukocytcs,5 airway constriction,6 pulmonary edema,7 and enhanced migration of neutrophils into the airspaces of thelungs.8-9PAF can be released from several different cell types, such as, basophils, neutrophils and alveolar macrophages, in response to a variety of particulates or membrane stimulants which include zymosan, calcium ionophore, phorbol esters, chemotactic agents, and endotoxin. 1~1 3 Therefore, PAF may play an important role in the development of pneumoconioses by mediating pulmonary responses of lung cells to a variety of occupational dusts. To investigate this possibility, we determined the effects of P AF on several physiological parameters of neutrophils, alveolar macrophages, and alveolar type Il epithelial cells.METHODSIsolation of CellsNeutrophils were isolated from human blood by dextran settling and centrifugal elutriation.14 Isolated neutrophils (93% pure) were resuspended in HEPES-buffered medium (145 mM NaCl, 5 mM KCI, 10 mM HEPES, 5 mM glucose, and 1 mM CaC12; pH = 7.4). Cell number and volume were determined with an electronic cell counter equipped with a sizing attachment.Rat alveolar macrophages were obtained by pulmonary lavage with ea2+, Mg2+-free Hanks balanced salts solution. 15 Alveolar macrophages (94% pure) were resuspended in HEPES-buffered medium, counted, and sized electronically.Rat alveolar type Il cells were isolated by enzymatic digestion for 35 minutes at 37°C with 40 µ/ml type I elastasc and 0.1 % collagenase and purified by centrifugal elutriation. 16.17 Type Il cells (92 % pure) were resuspended in HEPES-buffered medium for measurement of membrane potential, oxygen consumption, and trypan blue exclusion. Type Il pneumocytcs were resuspended in 0.1 M NaCl plus 0.05 M HEPES (pH = 7.8) to measure cytochrome P450-dependent activities and aggregation. Cell size and number were determined electronically."

"Electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements provide evidence for the formation of Cr(V) intermediates in the enzymatic reduction of Cr(VI) by glutathione reductase (GSSG-R) in the presence of NADPH, indicating an initial single-electron transfer step in the reduction mechanism. Depending on the pH, at least two different Cr(V) species are generated which are relatively long-lived. In addition, we have detected the hydroxyl (·OH) radical formation during the GSSG-R catalyzed reduction of Cr(VI) by spin trapping, employing 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO) and a-(4-pyridyl-1-oxide)-N-tert-butylnitrone (4-POBN) as spin traps. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) causes only a minor effect on the ·OH radical and Cr(V) formation, indicating that the ~ - is not significantly involved in the reaction mechanism. Catalase enhances the Cr(V) formation and substantially inhibits the ·OH radical formation, indicating the involvement of hydrogen peroxide (H20 2) in the reaction mechanism. Addition of H20i suppresses Cr(V) and enhances the ·OH radical fonnation. Measurements involving N-ethylmaleimide show that the Cr(V) species, produced enzymatically by the reduction of Cr(VI) by GSSG-R, react with H2O2 to generate ·OH radicals, which might participate in the initiation of Cr(VI) carcinogenicity.INTRODUCTIONC(VI) compounds have been found to exert serious toxic and carcinogenic effects on humans and animals [1-4) and to cause mutations in bacteria and transformation of mammalian cells [5-8). In contrast, most Cr(lll) compounds are relatively nontoxic, noncarcinogenic, and nonmutagenic [9, 10]. Cr(VI) and Cr(lll) oxidation states are different in their metabolic pathways: Cr(VI) ions are rapidly transported across cellular membranes [2, 11-13), while Cr(lll) moieties do not easily penetrate cells and are not oxidized by cellular constituents [3]. Since it is known that the reduction of Cr(Vl) is required for its reaction with DNA [2], the molecular mechanisms for the intracellular Cr(VI) reduction have been the focus of studies during the past decade but the details are still not understood."

"INTRODUCTIONMine ventilation planning is an engineering design process requiring a substantial amount of qualitative knowledge obtained through experience. A concept for a knowledge-based ventilation expert system was developed by Ramani and Prasad (1987).1 11 An expert system based on the above scheme was conceived with the motivation of providing a tool to facilitate decision making for ventilation engineers in the context of computer assisted ventilation planning. Options for the implementation of the system were then examined and several commercial, personal computer (PC) based shells assessed toward this end. The options considered, the evaluation criteria and procedure arc discussed in Prasad ·and Ramani, (1989).Cll Following the above study, a scheme was developed to represent the components of the expert system.<3> Evaluation of several commercial shells indicated that there was none available which permitted interfacing with a large external algorithmic program. It was therefore decided to develop the KBS in LISP and custom build the necessary interfacing routines to ""hook out• to the network analysis program (NAP). Due to this choice of development strategy, the computer implementation aspects of the KBS arc important as all the interfacing components had to be developed with the basic tools offered by LISP.In this paper, the implementation of the knowledge based system (KBS), in terms of its component, the interfaces among the various components of the KBS and between the KBS and the user arc described. The ventilation KBS consists of an AES (analysis expert system), an IES (interpretation expert system)' and an algorithmic NAP (network analy5is program). The AES analyzes the input to the NAP considering the legal 5tipulations governing the various mine ventilation network parameters and principles of good ventilation, helping the ventilation engineer develop and represent represent the problem for solution by the NAP. The IES diagnoses the output from the NAP in terms of the critical parameters in the context of the given problem. Thi5 loop is continued till a satisfactory salution is obtained. The implementational details of the AES, the IES and the approaches to the validation of the expert system arc also discussed."

Shortly after the Strategic Minerals Act of 1939 we passed by Congress, the Bureau of Mines was authorized to begin a program of investigation of domestic sources of strategic minerals. Since World War I, the Philipsburg district had been virtually the only one in the United States that was producing manganese on a commercial scale. Consequently, the district was among the first to he investigated. During the summer of 1939, the Geological Survey mapped the geology and ore deposits of the district. In late July 1939 the writer examined the district for the Bureau of Mines. On the basis of this examination and of the work performed by the Geological Survey, the Bureau of Mines diamond-drilled at several properties in the district during the summer of 1940. This report reviews the mining history and geology of the district, and presents the factual data obtained by diamond drilling.

In 1986 and 1987, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the nine separate parcels that comprise the 4,330-acre South Warner Contiguous Wilderness Study Area in order to evaluate their identified mineral resources. The nine parcels are along the east side of the South Warner Wilderness. They are, from north to south, the Granger, Milk, Cottonwood, Owl, Hornback, Eagle, Emerson, Barber, and Van Riper parcels. The Wilderness Study Area is underlain by basaltic, andesitic, and rhyolitic volcanic rocks and by sand and gravel deposits. Low-grade metamorphism is widespread in the volcanic rocks, with quartz, zeolites, datolite, chlorite, and calcite locally abundant in veins and amygdules. The rocks have been displaced by the mountain-front Surprise Valley fault and by crosscutting high-angle faults.

The Coast Range subarea of the Juneau Mining District (JMD) extends from the Canadian border north of the community of Skagway, southerly to Tracy Arm. It is bounded by the international boundary on the north and eastern edges. The Ferebee Glacier and Lynn Canal mark the western boundary, extending south to the Berners Bay region. From Berners Bay south, the western boundary is the eastern boundary of the Juneau Gold Belt (fig. E-l). The city of Skagway (fig. E-2) is the only developed community within the confines of the subarea. Skagway was originally established as a port for the Klondike gold rush of 1898. Recently, Skagway has gained prominence as a port for shipping goods into and mineral products out of Yukon Territory (fig. E-3). Skagway has also developed a thriving tourist industry based on its Alaskan traditions. The community of Skagway maintains a paved airstrip which is suitable for use by small multi-engine aircraft. Several regional air carriers serve Skag-way with frequent scheduled flights, especially during the summer months. Helicopter charter services are available from Skagway during the summer months.

[This is the eleventh in a series of reports on properties of commercial motor fuels made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first report contained data, on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.3/ The present report presents analytical data for 2,020 samples, representing the products of approximately 120 companies, which, as in previous surveys, include both large and small suppliers. In addition, the Pacific coast is represented by data averaged by the Pacific Coast Technical Group before being submitted and are published exactly as they were received. As in previous surveys, the data are divided into the three groups of samples of regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines, and each group has been averaged separately. "INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Com¬mittee of the Coordinating Research Council (CFC) 3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36. 4/ Further re¬ports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941.4/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of l941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed. The present report presents analytical data for 3,011 samples, representing the products of 113 companies. Most of the samples represented in this report were obtained during July and August 1946. As in previous surveys the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. "INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council (CRC) 3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.4/ Further reports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding sum¬mers and winters to and including the summer of 1941.4/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed.!The present report presents analytical data for 4,544 samples, represent¬ing the products of 124 companies. The samples represented in this report were obtained during December 19146, January and February 19-(. As in previous surveys, the companies covered Ly the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. Placer gold and platinum-group metals (PGM) In the Slate Creek area, northern Chistochina Mining District, are derived from silicified and carbonate-altered, Cretaceous-Tertiary (?) dikes and related mafic and ultramafic rocks. Gold In the placer deposits is also derived from Tertiary conglomerate and altered Jurassic-Cretaceous argilllte. The argilllte and Igneous bedrock sources show a unique Ag-Au-Cu-Hg-PGM association that Is attributed to a combination of magmatic, hydrothermal, and supergene processes. The bedrock and placer deposits contain a variety of gold silver-lead-copper and PGM alloys. The observed geochemical, mineralogic, and alteration features are consistent with current geological models for turbidite-hosted gold deposits. No economic gold or PGM lodes were Identified, but several areas warranting more detailed investigation were Identified. Conventional geochemical sampling and analysis of small sample splits weighing between 10 and 30 grams were shown to be unreliable as a consistent means of identifying gold- and PGM-bearing bedrock. Pan concentration of pulverized rock samples was shown to be a more effective, but still Imperfect means of Identifying gold and PGM source rocks. Geochemical data and mineralogic examination indicate that gold and PGM in potential lode sources are very finely and erratically disseminated, are chemically combined with other elements, and may not be entirely free-milling or amenable to simple gravity concentration.

Enclosed cabs are a primary means of reducing equipment operators? silica dust exposure at surface mines. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health experimentally investigated various factor effects on cab air filtration system performance. The factors investi­gated were intake filter efficiency, intake air leakage, intake filter loading (filter flow resistance), recirculation filter use, and wind effects on cab particulate penetration. Adding an intake pressurizer fan to the filtration system was also investigated. Results indicate that intake filter efficiency and recirculation filter use were the two most influential factors on cab penetration performance. Use of the recirculation filter reduced cab penetration by usually an order of magnitude over the intake air filter alone because of the multi­plicative filtration of the cab interior air. Intake air leakage and filter loading affected the cab penetration to a lesser extent, while wind had the least impact on cab penetration between the calm and 10-mph wind velocities tested. Adding an intake pressurizer fan notably increased intake airflow and cab pressure with only minor changes to cab penetration. A mathematical model was developed that describes cab penetration in terms of intake filter efficiency, intake air quantity, intake air leakage, recirculation filter efficiency, recirculation filter quantity, and wind penetration.
