The metal lithium, its alloys, and its salts are becoming Increasingly important as industrial materials. Lithium metal, because of its great affinity for elements, such as nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen, sulfur, phosphorus, carbon, and silicon, has become important for a wide variety of uses, ranging from purifying helium gas by removing the nitrogen to scavenging molten metals of undesirable impurities. The excellent fluxing properties of lithium salts have found increasing use in such applications as fluxes for welding aluminum and in lower melting ceramic glazes and coatings. Lithium chloride is one of the most hygroscopic salts known and is widely used as a dehumidifying agent. .About 17 lithium minerals are known. Four of these have commercial importance: Amblygonite, lepidolite, zinnwaldite, and spodumene. Spodumene is the most important source of lithium and lithium salts at present, but sizable deposits of amblygonite occur in the pegmatite area of the Black Hills of South Dakota. The size and nature of these deposits preclude the, possibility of, any assurance of an adequate supply of amblygonite for an operation processing only this mineral. Frequently spodumene and amblygonite occur associated in pegmatite minerals. Preliminary investigations indicate that a simultaneous recovery of spodumene and amblygonite can be made by froth flotation. A single process for treating spodumene and amblygonite or mixtures of thorn, would make possible more use of amblygonite as a source of lithium and obviate the separation of spodumene and amblygonite when they occur together.

"It has long been recognized that coke is a more desirable fuel than bituminous coal in water-gas apparatus of present design, but still considerable headway has been made in the use of the latter fuel as a substiaute for coke. This is particularly true in the Central States where the supply of high-grade coke has been very limited and uncertain during the past few years, and where coking coals of low sulphur content were available in quan¬tities. In fact, with, the present difference in price of coal and coke, it is possible to realize a marked saving when using a coking bituminous coal as generator fuel.Difficulties have been encountered in the use of such fuel, but they have, to a large extent, been overcome. One of the chief obstacles in the use of the more general utilization of bituminous coal for water-gas manufacture, is the fact that, with normal operation, the capacity per unit of time is reduced. This of course is a serious problem for plants operat¬ing at capacity with coke fuel. However, this difficulty can, to a large extent, be remedied by a changed method of operating, and can be entirely remedied by a combination of the latter with a change in the design (or proportions) of a water-gas set. The preceding statement, the reader will understand, refers more particularly to a carburetted water-gas set.In the manufacture of water gas from coke, present practice requires that for continuous 24-hour service the heat of combustion of all the carbon monoxide (CO) generated during the air blow be utilized in addition to the sensible heat of the gas coming from the generator. This is doubly true when making carburetted water gas from bituminous coking coal. The reasons why this is so are apparent when the following factors are considered."

"Several writers have called attention, in the technical press, to the possible failure of flame safety lamps in coal-dust laden atmospheres. Such writers question the safety or a flame lamp that has been proved only in atmospheres containing methane, believing that the resistance of the lamp to explosion would be lessened it coal dust constituted a part of the explosive mixture.If this be true, it follows that any series of tests devised to prove the safety of flame lamps for use in gaseous and dusty coal mines should not only embrace tests in mixtures containing various proportions of methane, but also in some of the tests the effect of adding coal dust to the explosive gaseous mixtures should be investigated.Some attention has been given this question by investigators, but the more common practice has been to make all tests in gas and air mixtures only, using methane when it was readily available. Apparently the English Accident Committee (1879-1886) who conducted tests upon 250 different lamps did not use coal dust in their tests. The first British requirements for the testing of safety lamps, issued as a result of the Coal Mine Act of 1911, made no mention of tests with coal duet.The Austrian Fire-damp Committee (1890) conducted a series of tests in which coal dust was used in some of the tests. In certain tests, the addition of coal dust apparently lowered the resistance of the lamp 1 meter per second. The Belgium investigators, Messrs. Watteyne and Stassart, conducted a series of tests in 1904 in which coal dust was used in a few tests without any marked difference in safety."

"Low-rank coals have a pronounced tendency to disintegrate or ""slack” when alternately dried, and wetted by exposure to the weather. The more readily a coal slacks the greater is its tendency to ignite spontaneously and the more care must be used in its shipment and storage. Lignite slacks very readily when exposed to the weather. Slacking trouble is also experienced in shipping and storing subbituminous coal, but not to the same extent as with lignite. As a rule, bituminous coals are only slightly affected by weathering and in general may be classified as nonslacking coals. The slacking tendency of subbituminous coal is one of the characteristics that is used to distinguish it from bituminous coal. An accelerated laboratory method of test was developed to measure such slacking tendencies. This method was applied to a number of coals, principally from the State of Washington, and the method and the results obtained are given herein.Helpful information concerning slacking tendencies of coal was received from Marius R. Campbell, senior geologist U. S. Geological Survey.Coals that slack readily contain relatively large amounts of moisture. When exposed to the weather such coals lore moisture rapidly. As the coal loses moisture at the surface there is a gradual drift of moisture from the interior of the piece to the surface. If the loss of moisture at the surface proceeds at a faster rate than it is replaced by moisture from the interior of the coal piece, there undoubtedly in greater shrinkage of the coal at the surface as tom-pared to the interior of the piece and stressed are generated in the surface coal.These stresses in the surface coal cause it to crack and disintegrate.Likewise, when the air-dried coal is wetted by rain, the exposed surface of the coal pieces gain moisture more rapidly than the interior of the piece, causing greater expansion in the surface coal and the coal breaks down further. As this process of air drying and wetting is continued when the coal is exposed to the weather, the slacking proceeds and the exposed lumps of coal may disintegrate completely."

The Holmes Safety Association is an offspring of the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association which was organized in Washington, D. C., in 1916 at a meeting of representatives of twenty-four leading mining associations connected with every branch of the United States mineral industries. The purpose of the meeting was to do honor to the memory of Joseph A. Holmes, one of the founders of the United States Bureau of Mines and its first director, whose death had occurred the year before on July 12, 1915. In deference to what was believed would have been the expressed wish of this great humanitarian and benefactor of the mineral industries, it was decided to establish a national safety organization to cover the mineral indus¬tries exclusively; out of respect for his memory and service, the organization was named the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association. On receiving requests from several mining districts, in 1922 a number of chapters ware established in several mining States.

"INTRODUCTION The Mining Branch of the Bureau of Mines has used the wagon drill to sample mineral deposits in New Mexico. This method of sampling was successful and con¬stituted an important phase of the work on five exploratory projects undertaken in 1943, 1944, and 1945. The deposits varied in topographic features, geology, mineral content, and in the physical characteristics of the rocks drilled. The altitudes ranged from 630 to 7,800 feet. Three hundred and seventeen holes totaling 6,852 feet were drilled. The deepest hole was 66 feet; the average depth was a little less than 22 feet.The results of the above-mentioned work form the basis of this report. Special attention is given to the later and more improved techniques used. This report was written with the expectation that the procedures might prove advantageous to others in the exploration and sampling of near-surface mineral de¬posits, and that a more extended use of the technique might result.AcknowledgmentsAcknowledgment is due Charles H. It has long been recognized that one of the principal ways of combating dust in coal mines is by means of water sprays. However, spray systems, currently in use, clog or plug frequently, thereby reducing the effectiveness of dust control aid, in turn, possibly increasing the health hazard to mining personnel. Moreover, the maintenance and replacement of spray system components, e.g., nozzles and filters, can be expensive in terms of direct costs of labor and material, and the consequent loss of production. Recognizing these problems, the Bureau of Mines sponsored a research project on the "Development of a Non-Clogging Water Spray System"; this project was carried out by Eastern Associated Coal Corp. The overall objective of this project was to develop a non-clogging water spray system suitable for use in underground coal mines. Since most of the dust formed is at or near the working coal face, emphasis was placed on face equipment such as a continuous mining machine. To accomplish this objective, a two-phase project was carried out. The first phase involved determining the causes of spray nozzle and spray system clogging, determining the availability of spray nozzles or systems that could be modified to be non-clogging, and developing a non-clogging water spray system. Phase two was concerned with the fabrication and the laboratory and field testing of a non-clogging system. In each phase, there were both laboratory and field investigations, and the results of these investigations are presented in this report.

This report describes how longitudinal and bending stress waves in' percussive drill rods generate noise. It is shown that in practical drills the largest noise source is the bending waves, which are mainly generated because of imperfections in the piston, chuck, and drill rod alignment. Equations are presented which enable the noise spectra generated by the bending and longitudinal waves to be precisely predicted. Means for reducing the amplitude of the bending waves are discussed.

"INTRODUCTION This report is the first of four to be presented on the microseismic method 4/ of predicting rock failure in underground mining. The application of the microseismic method to one specific case, namely, that of predicting rock bursts in deep mining, has been described in two previous reports. 5/ 6/ Since the publication of these reports 5/ 6/ the method has been extended to other fields of mining, end it is the purpose of this report (Part I) to describe the general microseismic method, giving the empirical facts upon it is based, the different testing procedures, the method of recording and analzing the data, and the interpretations that can be obtained there-from. Part II will describe a series of laboratory experiments that were performed to give information on the origin of microceismims and the microseismic properties of various rocks. Part III will cover application of the method to specific mining problems together with a brief description of a number of investigations performed during, the last three years. Part IV will describe in detail the microseicmic equipment used in the various phases of these investigations."

In the course of experiments on the stabilization of acetylene gas by addition of other gases, notably hydrocarbons such as methane, propane, and butane, it was observed that large quantities of carbon black are produced during the explosion of acetylene or mixtures of acetylene with the, above hydrocarbons, the added hydrocarbon being essentially decomposed into hydrogen and carbon. It is known that in the complete absence of air acetylene explodes upon application of an intense ignition source at pressure above 5.9 p.s.i. gage. The same is true of mixtures of hydrocarbons and acetylene. However, the pressures necessary for explosion are considerably higher in the case of these mixtures and depend on the amount of added hydrocarbon. The present report contains data on gaseous products and the physical characteristics of the carbon black formed by explosion at elevated pressures of various mixtures of acetylene and hydrocarbons as well as other gases, such as hydrogen, helium, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide.

The real gross national product (GNP) advanced at a annual rate of 3.1 % during the second quarter, following a revised 3.4% increase in the first quarter (see table 1). Export growth continues to play an important role in the rising output. Combined with the decline in imports, it resulted in a noticeably improved trade position. Imports of consumer goods, including automobiles and food, fell while exports rose. Imported cars have been losing ground to domestic cars. The foreign car share of the U.S. market fell from 36% in October 1987, to 29% in May 1988. Business spending for new plant and equipment contributed strongly to the GNP increase. Equipment purchases, particularly of computers, rose at a 14.8% annual rate, following a large first-quarter gain. Purchases of structures rose 11.8%. The other key component of business spending, change in business inventories, declined from the first quarter. Inventory buildup in late 1987 had been considered excessive.

Judging from the rapid pace of increased demands for mineral products, technological forecasting will become an increasingly necessary tool in mining. Even though the mining industry in 1966 produced more are than ever before, current extraction rates are only a fraction of what is expected in the later years of the twentieth century. If metal and mineral commodities continue to hold their respective and present share of markets, the prospect of coping with demands from a population that will double in the next thirty years can become an impossible task when viewed outside the limits of technological advance and change. Those mining companies that are doing little to develop new and expanding horizons for their operations cannot expect to survive. Nearly 90% of all metals and mineral products consumed last year was recovered by open-pit mining. This has placed great pressure on this segment of the industry which, consequently, has resulted in some spectacular developments. Already production rates at many places are dwarfing those of the Panama Canal and other well-known earth moving projects which are frequently identified as massive undertakings. With projects of this scale, the need for increased sophistication of engineering, planning, management and administration of modern mining installations has never become more apparent. The design of complete systems for the mine and plant that fit the mould of today's business and social environments is undergoing an evolutionary process.

"Magnetic surveys made by the Missouri Bureau of Geology and Mines in 931 and 1932 disclosed a large positive anomaly about a mile south of Bourbon, Mo. 3/ Electrical resistivity measurements made by the Division of Geophysical Exploration of the Bureau of Mines in the winter of 1942-43 indicated that the source of this anomaly was in the pre-Cambrian rhyolite at a depth of more than 1,400 feet. 4/In order to determine the character of the material that caused the magnetic anomaly, which might be either a body of magnetite or a large intrusive of basic rock, the Bureau of Mines drilled four holes to depths of 1,800 to 2,300 feet. Magnetite in rhyolite porphyry was encountered at 1,600 to 2,000 feet, and this is doubtless the main source of the magnetic anomaly, although it is possible that additional iron ore exists at greater depth.Hole 1 was apparently located southeast of the source of the anomaly and encountered only small stringers of magnetite. Hole 2 penetrated four mineralized zones having a total thickness of 125.7 feet and an average weighted content of 43.52 percent iron and 31.62 percent silica. These zones were tested again by a deflection hole, 2A, which gave nearly identical indications. Hole 3, 500 feet north of hole 2, penetrated 58 foot of mineralized rhyolito containing an average 43.4 percent iron.Metallurgical tests showed that the silica in the ore is tightly locked with the magnetite. After grinding to minus 100 mesh, a 66 percent iron con¬centrate with 7 percent silica was obtained by flotation."

This Bureau of Mines report reviews the various methods of removing the liquid from tailings slurries that contain very fine grained solids. Gravitational settlement, centrifugation, filtration, and thermal drying methods are discussed in detail. Chemical additives, electrokinetic dewatering, and the rotary trommel screen are also mentioned. Lists of dewatering equipment and suppliers are given in the appendixes to assist the planner who must choose the most efficient, economic, and practical method of dewatering very fine grained mill tailings.

"Introduction Ore from stopes in metal mines is generally dumped or drawn into chutes or raises through which it passes by gravity to the haulage levels. Occasionally, and under some conditions quite frequently, the ore in a chute will wedge or hang and refuse to run. This hanging of the ore may be due to the packing of damp or clayey material, to boulders forming an arch, or to loose lagging or other timber becoming lodged in the chute.In drawing material from a loading chute it is drawn out a car at a time, and the intermittent flow of the material .increases its tendency to hang. When the obstruction in the chute is near or at the loading gate, the chute pullers start the ore by punching it with iron bars inserted through openings in the chute gate. When the obstruction is beyond reach of the bars, other means of starting the ore must be used.In some systems of mining, chutes or ore raises are built with timber as the stope extends upward. Generally, a manway is left alongside of the chutes, and when the ore hangs in a chute usually it can be started by a miner from the manway ladder by pounding on the timbers of the chute or by punching the ore with a bar inserted through small holes in the chute lining. Special methods of starting clogged ore, such as shaking a chain left hanging in the chute, are used at some places.In other systems of mining, ore passes or chutes are run through solid rock and when the ore hangs in one of these passes, either it must be blasted or else started from the top. Sometimes the ore can be started by running water into the top of the chute, but if the water does not start the ore moving, it must be blasted from underneath. This is done by detonating a bundle of cartridges under the obstruction in the chute or raise."

This Bureau of Mines report is the second of a series of process evaluations planned to determine the relative processing costs of producing metallurgical-grade alumina from low-grade aluminous materials. Included in these evaluations are recommendations for additional research and development to improve the processes and to lower their costs. The design for each process is based on published work. The processes considered in this report are designed to extract alumina as aluminum chloride from calcined clay with 20 percent hydrochloric acid and to remove the silica residue by filtration. Iron is removed by one of the following processes: Isopropyl ether extraction, in which iron chloride is extracted before decomposing the aluminum chloride; gas precipitation, in which the aluminum chloride is precipitated with hydrogen chloride while leaving the iron chloride in solution; gas precipitation-isopropyl ether extraction, in which the aluminum chloride from precipitation is extracted with isopropyl ether, if necessary; caustic purification, in which a crude alumina is produced and then purified by a modified Bayer operation; or sinter purification, in which a crude alumina is produced and then purified by a lime-soda sinter operation. In the first half of 1990, lessening of cold war tensions was welcome. But Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in August led to the Persian Gulf War in January and February 1991. The subsequent oil shock contributed to a dampening of the U.S. economy, and the U.S. gross national product rose only 0.9 % to $5,463 billion (U.S. billion = 109). The buildup of military forces in the Persian Gulf area focused greater attention not only on petroleum but also on other strategic materials. The U.S. Department of Defense continued to review stockpile goals and upgrade several mineral materials. In addition, the U.S. Bureau of Mines continued to maintain the standby Emergency Minerals Administration. After the Defense Production Act, which authorizes priorities, allocations, and supply expansion, lapsed on October 20, 1990, the Selective Service Act of 1967 became the authority to ensure that orders of the Armed Forces and defense atomic energy programs were given priority treatment.

On Oct. 16, 1959 a cooperative agreement between the Bureau of Mines and the American Association of Cost Engineers became effective. This agreement provides for the publication of the annual bibliography under the sponsorship of both groups with the work load involved in the preparation divided equally between the two. As a result, the present report partially reflects the efforts of the members of the Association.
