In 1986 and 1987, at the request of the U.S. Forest Service, the U.S. Bureau of Mines examined the 47,000-acre Electric Peak study area (part of the formerly-designated RARE II Non-wilderness Recommended Area no. 1609) to evaluate its' identified mineral resources. The study area is in Powell and Jefferson Counties, YT, about 30 mi southwest of Helena and 30 mi north of Butte. Three lode localities within the study area contain an estimated 159,000 tons of identified subeconomic resources containing gold, silver, and accessory lead, copper, and zinc. Resources at those localities range from 10,000 to 134,000 tons with grades ranging from 0.04 to 0.32 oz/ton gold, 0.92 to 16.42 oz/ton silver, 0.14 to 79.65 percent lead, and as much as 0.41 percent copper and 0.68 percent zinc. One property also contains 0.15 percent antimony. Gold, silver, and base-metal content in samples of poorly exposed mineralized structures indicate that further exploration may identify resources on seven additional study area localities.

Thick coal seams are common in the Western United States, Many seams are over 50 it thick (some are over 200 ft thick) and are too deep to extract using surface methods. Currently, such deposits are developed using standard "eastern" mining methods which only extract a few feet of total seam thickness, often rendering the remaining coal unminable with current technology. Novel methods that increase thick-seam recovery have been developed and are currently being used in Europe. These methods--high-face single-pass and multislice longwall, longwall caving, and hydraulic mining--have great potential for use in the United States. Successful use of these methods is an objective of the Bureau of Mines. Their use requires, among other things, a full evaluation of geologic features common to thick coals. The objective of this report is to present and summarize those features that will affect the introduction of the methods into thick-seam mines in the Western United States. The geologic elements delineated are three-dimensional configuration of the seam, cleat development, joints and fractures, roof and floor lithology, and faulting.

This report describes the results of a measurement and analysis program to characterize wireless radio transmission in metal/non-metal mines over a wide frequency range from 0.2 - 1000 MHz and over a variety of mine environments. Six mines were chosen based on the relative economic significance of their product to the U.S. economy. Mine types include oil shale, uranium, potash, lead/zinc, copper, and silver. Particular mines were chosen so that the group would embody the most important mining techniques. The results show that transmission at medium frequencies are optimum for wireless mine communications, in agreement with extensive testing previously performed by the authors In coal mines, and that mine-wide wireless systems are feasible with a minimum requirement for new dedicated wiring. At least one need for such a wireless system was identified in each mine visited.

The study of oil production methods with reference to the amount of oil originally pressent in the oil-bearing, formations has developed the fact that-ordinary methods-of production remove only a part of the oil actually present. In fact, it is generally realized that when a field is abandoned more oil remains in the sand than has ever been removed. As a consequence of this realization, the petroleum engineer has devoted considerable tine in recent years in devising methods for increasing the percentage of recovery. His studies have indicated that in most cases the total production of a field is dependent upon the available gas rather than upon the available oil. Mien the gas in the sand is exhausted, oil production ceases even though there may be enormous quantities of oil remaining unrecovered. Consequently, any method of conserving the gas or increasing the supply of gas will increase the ultimate recovery from a field. The practice of producing oil under vacuum increases the effectiveness of the gas remaining in the sand, as well as furnishing more gas by evaporating the light fractions of the crude. Pumping ' compressed gas or air down selected wells of a lease has been found to increase the production of oil from the surrounding wells. Studies of oil and gas ratios have indicated that much of the available gas has been wasted as far as its effectiveness on oil production is concerned. his has led to the development of "stop cocking"3 and the practice of producing under back pressure3, which methods aim, to obtain more effective work from the gas with reference to the amount of oil delivered to the well.

The Bureau of Mines tested a prototype tapered-element oscillating microbalance (TEOM) dust monitor for measuring respirable coal mine dust. The monitor uses the inertial behavior of a vibrating element to measure the mass of sampled dust. Tests were performed to determine variability, drift, the effect of humidity, placement of collection filter, and element orientation during analysis, and comparability with gravimetric measurements of respirable coal dust. Variability was about 1.6 µg. Over about 26 h at 46 pct relative humidity, drift was very slightly negative. When the relative humidity was increased to 78 pct, all units showed a total positive change less then 40 µg over about 70h. Filter placement variation on the tapered element resulting from in- consistent sizing of the filter mounting bases caused significant error (up to 0.2 mg). In practice, calibration of the system for each new filter will eliminate that error. Orientation of the element during analysis did not introduce significant error, but care is necessary when mounting the canister that houses the element to avoid damping oscillation of the element. Dust tests were performed in an aerosol chamber using coal dust. Measurements made by the TEOM dust monitor agreed to within 10 pct of simultaneous measurements by gravimetric personal samplers.

A recent survey of 23 vein-type metal mining operations in several western states discloses that some of the more serious deficiencies in ventilation technology are associated with inordinately high levels of mine resistance. This problem has progressively increased over many years of operation (without adequate remedial action) as mines have become extended in depth. Where two shafts form the downcast and upcast airways of a relatively deep mine, the whole of the mine air volume must pass through each shaft in turn. Since at least one of these shafts contains hoisting equipment, structural members are necessary to support the rigid guides and shaft walls. These offer high aerodynamic resistance. In some deep mines, a single shaft of this nature may represent upwards of one-half of the total mine resistance. The second shaft, depending upon its design, may represent an additional one-third of the mine resistance. Therefore, the various working levels throughout the mine contribute only the small remaining amount of the total mine resistance.

This Bureau of Mines report presents a method of standardizing forecasts of mineral consumption that attempts to resolve the problems caused by the use of different data bases, different definitions of minerals consumption, and different base years for making projections. Using this method, forecasts of U.S. and world mineral consumption, in the year 2000, for nine commodities (aluminum, chromium, cobalt, copper, manganese, nickel, tin, tungsten, and zinc) are standardized and compared. Also selected forecasts or associated growth rates are used to generate implied values of consumption for 1980-83, which are then compared to actual values of consumption for 1980-83. The economic growth predictions underlying the forecasts are examined, and some general conclusions are drawn. A description of each methodology used to generate these forecasts is given in an appendix.

The effect of small percentages of sodium chloride on the incendivity of permissible explosives was studied by the Bruceton up-and-down technique in gallery tests. Both the reduction in incendivity achieved by addition of sodium chloride and application of the test method to explosives evaluation are discussed. It is demonstrated that the up-and-down technique in gallery testing is suitable for distinguishing differences in incendivity between different explosive compositions and between lots of the same composition. The study also shows that addition of relatively small quantities of sodium chloride tends to reduce the incendivity of explosives to firedamp, but addition of sodium chloride cannot insure reduced incendivity. Any improvement attributable to the salt can be counteracted by undefined variations in the explosive. The need for experimental investigations of a number of factors that may affect the safety of permissible explosives is emphasized. This Bureau of Mines report estimates the population of the principal types of machinery in use by the coal mining industry during 1982 in surface and underground mines. Estimates were arrived at using 1976 coal equipment population estimates as baseline data with modifications made for new mine development, expansion, and closure occurring during 1976-82. Estimates were broken down into 3 regions which included all 26 coal-producing States. Modifications made to the baseline data were computed using (1) actual equipment information when available, plus (2) equipment information hypothesized from representative generic mine models, which were predicated on mine size and mine method. Roughly half of the equipment fleet at new or expanding coal operations was known; the remainder was hypothesized. The mine models used to generate equipment information are included in this report, along with the hypothesized equipment use data. The equations and various factors used to determine the equipment adjustments for mine closings, new mine openings, and small coal mine operations are also identified.

[In July, 1924, the Bureau of Mines, through its Petroleum Experiment Station, undertook a field study of methods used in oil-field shops for dressing and tempering fishtail bits. The purpose of this work was to suggest chances that would be helpful to the bit-dresser in turning out better treated, harder, and tougher bits, and thus cut down the excessive loss of time caused by too frequent changing of bits. It was the intention to eliminate as much as possible the guess work connected with dressing and tempering bits under the method of judging temperature by eye, by developing; practical methods of controlling temperature. If there were some possible means of accurate temperature control, then it would be an easy matter to bring all bits to the proper temperature for maximum hardness rued toughness, thus doing away with the source of most of the trouble experienced in the present method of bit tempering. Shortly after the Bureau of Mines began its study, a chop In the Stroud, Oklahoma, oil field announced method for tempering fishtail bits that Would increase the drilling footage of each bit treated. The method accurately regulates, by the use of a bath of molten salt, the temperature to which a bit is heated before being quenched to produce hardness. There is nothing new in using silt baths for the, heat treatment of steel, but this was the first attempt to introduce it into the oil fields for use in hardening bits, and for this purpose it proved to be admirably adapted. In tempering, by the old system it is not possible to measure the temperature of the heated bit by means of an electrical instrument for that purpose, whereas this is an easy matter with the now method. If heating steel to slightly above the critical point rind quenching suddenly will bring out its best properties, their here is a method of accurately bringing the steel to that point.]

"IntroductionIn a typical incremental loading test, the AE activity increases rapidly in the initial stage of the loading. It is associated with initial closure under compression of favorably oriented cracks already present, together with sliding of crack faces against each other /1/. After the initial stage, crack closure and movement largely cease and the AE activity drops to a barely detectable level /2/. In the final stage of loading test, cracking associated with the onset of inelastic deformation' occurs, and the rate of AE rapidly increases /3/ indicating an increase in the •number of events associated with higher number of microcracks. To understand better primary fragmentation process, Anderson and Ruzzi conducted tests to identify a practical method of monitoring fracture development in rock, as caused by an excavation tool /4/. They proved that a relationship existed between the AE activity, generated during fracturing and the amount of fracture surface area created.A process of fragmentation, demonstrated by conical bits acting orthogonal to the flat surface of block of coal specimen with and without lateral confining pressure is presented here. The monitoring of AE during the fracturing process of rock/coal has been a very useful indirect method in studying fracture mechanism.Specimen PreparationLarge blocks of Waynesburg coal were obtained from a surface mine. These blocks were then out and molded to approximate dimensions of 25.4 x 25.4 x 15.2 'an (10 x 10 x 6 in.). These specimens were instrumented with three strain gages in a 45 degree rosette. One was mounted parallel to the bedding plane direction, another was tinted at an angle of 45 degree from the bedding plane direction and the third was mounted perpendicular to the bedding .plane direction. Each of the three strain gages were set 5.1 an (2 in.) away from the impact point.Typical Test ProcedureIn a typical experiment, the specimen was placed in the confining chamber.Predetermined equivalent in-situ stresses were applied to the specimen by using two sets of hydraulic cylinders. Two 1 in. thick steel plates ware positioned between the sample and the hydraulic cylinders in order to distribute the pressure uniformly over the whole surface of the specimen. The LVDT null position was adjusted with respect to the coal face. After setting the LVDT, the bit and associated weight was lifted to a predetermined height (equivalent to a predetermined kinetic energy) by a win. The three strain gages were balanced using the signal conditioner and the output was recorded by a 6 channel strip chart recorder. The experimental set-up is shown in Figure 1."

The cause of many deaths and extensive property damage in coal mines resulting from explosions and mine fires has been directly attributable to electric cable failures (including splice failures). The Federal Bureau of Mines data show that out of 355 underground coal mine fires investigated from July 1952 to January 1960, 103 (29 percent) were directly related to trailing cables. These cable failures resulted in the death of 7 men and injuries to 37 others. These potential hazards have become greater, obviously, through the widespread adoption of mechanized mining methods with electric-driven machinery powered through trailing cables according to Young,4 68.1 percent of the total bituminous and lignite production of the United States was mined underground in 1959. About 85 percent of this production was attained by mechanized loading methods. A large majority of the mines using the hand- loading methods also used equipment with trailing cables such as cutting machines, drills, and gathering locomotives. The problem of minimizing the loss of life, resources, and equipment from cable failures should be of concern to the management of all coal mines. It would be misleading to imply that no consideration has been given to the problem and its associated hazards. Through research cable manufacturers have endeavored to develop trailing cables that will withstand the severe service imposed by underground mining conditions. Technical research groups have undertaken studies for determining improved procedure and materials for field splices. Coal companies have instituted cable maintenance programs with a view toward the reduction of cable failures and consequent improvement in safety and efficiency of operations. The supply of manganese is a subject of much interest. The idea of obtaining it from rhodochrosite-MnC03 is attractive because the carbonate is supposed not to be so contaminated with impurities as the commonly utilized oxides. Large bodies of rhodochrosite-bearing rock have been known for a long while to exist at Butte, Mont. Hence samples were obtained from that place. In the two samples examined quartz was the chief diluting substance. The leaner sample was about one half quartz; some copper, lead, zinc, and iron sulphides were also present. The rhodochrosite amounted to about 40 per cent, so that the sample had a tenor of about 20 per cent manganese. This sample was the subject of the examination reported herein.

In August 1943 the Bureau of Mines completed seven churn-drill holes in an area of old mine workings near Linden, Wis., formerly known as the Argall mine. The work was undertaken as part of a general investigation by the Bureau of the zinc and lead producing area of southwestern Wisconsin at a time when special effort was being made to increase the production of metals necessary for war. The area was selected for investigation on the basis of its favorable geologic structure, past history, and apparent mineralization.

The research described in this report was conducted under a cooperative research agreement between the U.S Bureau of Mines Twin Cities Research Center (TCRC), Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. (CCI), and three operations in Northern Michigan managed by CCI: the Empire and Tilden surface taconite mining operations, and the Central Shops maintenance facility. All of these operations are in or near Ishpeming, MI. The Human Factors Research Group at TCRC is responsible for designing, planning, and conducting the research, and reporting on the findings. This project was carried out in order to investigate the high prevalence of back injuries being experienced by workers employed at the three CCI Northern Michigan sites, In an analysis of Company accident records for workers employed at these sites, it was determined that back injury problems confronting the CCI sites mirror those confronting the entire mining industry.

In two decades Turkey has emerged from the debacle of the Ottoman Empire to become one of the most modern nations in the Middle East. The numerous achievements of this period were remarkable in that they affected human and social, as well as economic, fields. Most of this progress was achieved by Turkey's unaided efforts and the utilization of domestic resources; however, since 1948 various United States aid programs3/ have made significant contributions to increased agricultural and industrial output. Turkey's singleness of purpose in favor of a strong, independent, and prosperous republic has evoked universal admiration and encouraged the hope of stability in the Middle East. Much of the development of the Turkish economy to date has been fostered by the State; however, with growing strength the leaders in 1950 considered the time appro¬priate to relax the nationalistic economic policy and permit private enterprise to play a larger role in increasing domestic output and raising the tempo of industrialization. In pursuance! Of this policy, laws encouraging investment of foreign capital in Turkey and others stimulating development of mining and petroleum enterprises were enacted in 1954. This new legislation, plus the cooperative attitude of the Turkish Government, have encouraged wide interest in the mineral resources of the country.

The Muir Inlet or Nunatak molybdenum deposits arc in the Glacier Bay district, Muir Inlet, miles northwest of Juneau. The deposits were examined by Bureau of Mines engineers, and the area was mapped by a field party of the Federal Geological Survey during the summer of 1942. 5/ The following year the Bureau of Mines began developing the deposits. A total of 217 channel samples were taken, and 2 diamond drill holes totaling 256 feet wore drilled. The samples were sent to the' Bureau's laboratories at Rolla, Mo. for beneficiation.

A mineral survey of the 520-acre Quigg West Wilderness Study Area (MT-074-155) was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1986 at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The Wilderness Study Area is in Granite County in western Montana about 16 miles northwest of Phillipsburg and 27 mi les northeast of Hamilton, MT. Stony Mountain, a study area on lands administered by the U.S. Forest Service, is about 1 mile to the south-southwest and was studied concurrently. No mineral resources were identified in the Quigg West Wilderness Study Area, but high grade gold assays, as much as 1.24 ounce gold per ton, were obtained at the one prospect found. Samples from four workings contained significant gold; minor silver, molybdenum, and copper were also present. The prospect containing the narrow and discontinuous gold-bearing quartz vein straddles the south boundary of the Wilderness Study Area. The shear zone containing the vein projects toward the old Crescent mine, about 4.5 miles to the south, which shows a similar geologic structure.

PURPOSE: Evaluate practical technological advances in hearing protective devices for use in different mining environments RESEARCH SUMMARY: Previous NIOSH research shows that miners develop hearing loss much more quickly than nonoccupationally noise-exposed individuals and that miners experience a greater severity of hearing loss than would be expected for nonoccupational noise-exposed persons of the same age and sex. As described in the National Occupation-al Research Agenda, problems created by occupational hearing loss include(1) reduced quality of life due to social isolation and unrelenting tinnitus,(2) impaired communication with family members, the public, and coworkers, (3) diminished ability to monitor the work environment (i.e., warning signals, equipment sounds, etc.), (4) lost productivity and increased accidents resulting from impaired communication and isolation, and (5) expenses for workers? compensation and hearing aids.
