"By the end of 2000, the first bio-oxidation plant in China that designed by ENFI come successfully into commercial operation in Yantai Gold Smeltery. Its capacity is 50t/d of refractory gold ore concentrate. After the extension, the capacity of bio-oxidation plant reached 80t/d of refractory gold ore concentrate at end of 2001.The refractory gold ore concentrate treated is from different gold mines. After proportionate feeding, the feed typically consists of Au (52.7g/t), S (24.42%), As (3.58%).The bacterial culture used in the bio-oxidation circuit is taken from a mine in south of China, and has been grown over 20 years on a variety of sulfide concentrates in a laboratory of mineral processing, and has shown to be adaptive to growth in a high concentrations of arsenic. It is a mixture of mesophilic microorganisms. The nutrients used in the bio-oxidation process are (NH4)2SO4, KH2PO4, KOH.Before feeding to bio-oxidation circuit, the concentrate would be milled to minus 43µm. The biooxidation product is fed to solid/liquid separation system that consists of a thickener and two press filters, solid from the system is fed to CCD circuit, liquid from the system is fed to neutralization area. The neutralized product is fed to another solid/liquid separation system, and the solid from the system is disposed of on a wasted quarry pit, the liquid from the system is returned to bio-oxidation circuit for reusing."

"Industrial minerals may contain the same elements in approximately the same amount. In these cases backscatter electron imaging or chemical analysis are not sufficient to identify the minerals. Another problem arises when micro textures are not detectable in traditional imaging or the grain size is smaller than the X-ray spatial resolution.As a supplementary technique in these cases, application of crystallographic information by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) in the scanning electron microscope (SEM) may be a suitable method. The technique has been demonstrated on three Norwegian mineral raw materials and one Italian marble and shows that it has some advantages compared to traditional techniques.• quantitative measurements by ebsdCommon automatic techniques describing the mineral contents and the occurrence of minerals in free and locked particles, are based on optical-, backscattered electron (BSE)- or X-ray-signals. There are various commercial software systems on feature analysis by backscattered and X-ray signals in combination with image analysis (e.g. Oxford Inca Feature, CSIRO QemScan).Especially in silicates, the occurrence of similar elements in the different minerals is common. Sometimes the various minerals not only contain the same elements, but also approximately the same amount of each element. In these cases BSE imaging and chemical analysis are not always sufficient for identification."

"When improving a plant a mineral processing engineer would like to know the mineral composition distribution. In order to assess this distribution in particles, as compared to the corresponding distribution in particle sections, a procedure needs to be applied to the observed particle sections. Such a procedure is called a stereological correction. There exists many stereological correction procedures, but one group of such procedures is based on using those stereological equations that do not require making assumptions regarding particle shape or texture. These equations are called geometric probability equations.Davy derived a geometric probability equation to estimate the covariance of mineral composition distributions for particles from both particle sections and linear intercepts. This covariance can be used to measure the variance of the particle composition distribution of each mineral. The equation as presented by Davy requires textural information; however the equation was modified by Gay to be more directly applied to particle sections and linear intercepts. The variance obtained from applying this equation is fundamental to the binary stereological correction procedures developed by Gay and his colleagues; the covariance is fundamental to the multiphase stereological correction.Thus far, validation of both the binary and multiphase stereological correction has been achieved using numerical simulation. This paper shall present results comparing the covariance (and variance) estimates from Gay’s equation with actual three-dimensional information obtained from serially sectioning particles. This involved mounting a set of particles and continuously sectioning all particles uniformly so that the three dimensional structure of the particles could be obtained.The mineralogical data to which the equations described above were applied were derived from two individual size fractions from a hard-rock titanium deposit. "Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is gaining increasing acceptance as a decision-support tool by which to evaluate the environmental performance of a product, process or service. This is evidenced by its inclusion in international policy documents (for example in the European Union’s Integrated Product Policy) and in environmental management standards (the ISO 14 040 series of environmental management codes relate to LCA). In response to this, the minerals industry has conducted a number of commodity-specific LCAs. These include studies for global production of a number of commodities including copper, nickel, aluminium and steel. In addition, a number of minerals companies profess to use LCA as part of their suite of project and technology assessment tools. Often, this collected use represents more a situation of “we do this because we’re told it’s good for business” rather than from any demonstrable evidence of this fact. This has led to a situation of much confusion and disillusionment within the industry, exacerbated by the obvious current limitations of LCA to accurately reflect the environmental performance of minerals and metals.Our point of departure here is that LCA, conforming as it does to the tenets of environmental systems analysis, is a valuable starting point, and that there is merit in exploring to what extent the methodology can be enhanced to better reflect the environmental performance of minerals and metals. Specifically, we explore here the further development of LCA to address the following:• Land Use issues• Consumption of Abiotic Resources including metallic and non-metallic minerals, water and soil)• Human and Eco-toxicity issues relating to mobility and bio-availability of metals• Salinityand address these through selected experimental and simulation case studies relating to energy- and base minerals production. Advances resulting from the United Nations Environment Programme/Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry Life Cycle Initiative are presented in that they directly affect the application of LCA to mining, minerals and metals. Comments are offered on how best the mining and minerals industry might interface with future developments resulting from this Initiative in order that the Initiative can deliver outcomes which render LCA a useful tool for decision making in mining and minerals processing."

"An estimated 600,000 tons of bentonite clay are used annually in the U. S. as binder for production of iron ore concentrate pellets. Since this is a significant cost item for the plants, and the addition of bentonite to the pellets contributes undesirable silica into the finished pellets, there is considerable incentive for finding methods to reduce bentonite use. One way to reduce bentonite levels is to selectively use those bentonites that are most effective in this application, so that a lower dosage will still produce a sufficiently strong pellet. Unfortunately, there are no satisfactory methods available for accurately predicting which bentonites are actually most effective, short of using them to actually make pellets. One of the popular methods for attempting to evaluate bentonites is the “Plate Water Absorption” (PWA) test. While some plant operators accept the PWA results as indicating the relative quality of bentonites, others disagree and claim that, over a fairly broad range of values, PWA does not correlate with bentonite performance.Since both Ca+2 and Mg+2 ions are known to reduce the swelling and water absorption capacity of bentonite, it was believed that the presence of these ions in plant recycle water could be changing the bentonite performance. Since the standard PWA test uses only distilled water for its measurements, it could not detect these effects. Experiments were therefore carried out on a number of different bentonites using a modified PWA tests, with plant recycle water replacing the distilled water. These experiments showed little effect of the plant water on the PWA value, and chemical analysis of the water showed that the levels of dissolved salts were quite low.Water and accompanying salts were then extracted from a magnetite concentrate filter cake by rinsing with distilled water. Analysis of this water showed an extremely high level of dissolved salts, particularly salts of calcium and magnesium. When concentrations were compared with the recycle water from the plant filters, it was determined that levels of Ca+2 and Mg+2 retained in the filter cake were over 500 times higher than levels in the recycle water. This extreme elevation of soluble salts in the filter cake is believed to be due to adsorption of these ions into the electrical double layer of the magnetite particles."

"This paper reports the hydrometallurgical treatment of gravity concentrates of gold samples and outcrops associated with graphite ores obtained from:• flotation tailings of crystalline graphite minerals• outcrop samples of graphitic rock associated with auriferous minerals and free gold located in the Villa Union district and surrounding areas - La Rioja Province - Argentina.Previous studies of the flotation potential of crystalline graphite minerals failed to consider the presence of noble metals.The samples represent a mineralized zone of crystalline graphite which is distributed in different formations with a NE - SW trend in Maz, Punta Colorada and Las Ramaditas hills, covering an area of about 300 square kilometers."

"Magotteaux and Anglo Platinum started a co-operation program with the main aim of establishing the optimum milling configuration measured in terms of throughput, fineness and energy consumption.For this purpose, a fully instrumented pilot milling plant, supplied by Magotteaux (Pty) Ltd, and equipped with a 0.9 x 1.0 m ball mill, was erected at Frank concentrator (Merensky Pt ore). The primary ball mills at Frank concentrator were surveyed in order to set the conditions for the base case. This data was then replicated in the pilot mill under the same configuration. Thereafter, a series of different parameters were varied in order to attempt to optimize the milling system.Only grate versus overflow discharge and open versus closed circuit will be discussed in this paper.It should be noted that this paper does not attempt to give a universal solution as to what milling configuration is optimum in all cases. The conclusions apply for this particular case and probably most others, but it would be advisable to consider each case on its own.CONCLUSION• Overflow versus grate dischargeAn overflow mill has a “pool” of slurry around the toe of the ball charge, which creates a counter lever to the ball charge. This will reduce the absorbed power in the range of 10-15% (depending on the case) and will consequently result in a coarser grind. The tests found a 4% gain in grinding efficiency (Wio) with an overflow mill but this is probably not significant.This lower absorbed power and coarser grind can be counteracted by increasing the ball charge (if below maximum) and/or by increasing the mill volume when removing the grate discharge (a typical grate takes up about 300mm of the mill length).• Open versus closed circuit"

"The Merensky Reef is a platinum group minerals (PGM) bearing reef in the Bushveld Igneous Complex in South Africa. The reef has been treated by bulk PGM and sulphide flotation with the aim of maximisingthe valuable minerals recovery and gangue minerals rejection.Synthetic water with a calcium concentration of 80 ppm and 500 ppm was prepared and the flotation results obtained were compared to a simple electrolyte in order to determine the effect water quality has on pentlandite and pyroxene surface alteration and, ultimately, floatability. During the study, the possible effect of interactions between the minerals investigated and Ca2+ ions in the presence of sodium isobutyl xanthate was studied at pH 6 and pH 9 by means of zeta potential determinations, microflotation tests and ToF-SIMS analysis.The results obtained on 1:1 pentlandite-pyroxene mixtures showed that the quality of process water plays an important role in flotation. The flotation recoveries of pentlandite and pyroxene were lower in synthetic process water compared to those obtained in a simple electrolyte solution."

"One of the oldest mining areas in the World exist in Africa and the Middle East. This area is being exploited by foreign and local mining entities. Several large plants, both foreign and local as well as small operators, conduct their mining business on a scale which would be could be prohibited in any other part of the world. Relatively recent European disaster with tailing disposal and breakout has highlighted the problem.More important to the author is that the presence of foreign entities in zones which have not remedied the situation but has heightened the concern due to those entities using similar outrageous methods in treatment of waste. The abject misuse of technology cannot be permitted to continue and the lack of any metallurgical knowledge in the treatment of gold ores is considered deplorable for the majority of third world countries.The destruction of cyanide is simple and straightforward and requires no special skills. In South America, we developed a system that is modular, compact and can be operated in batch mode to cater for several clients, as required. Larger installations would require a separate module, as treatmentwould be on a continuous basis."

"A specially designed mill which allowed the control of pH throughout grinding was used to study the effect of rgrinding conditions on galena flotation and galena separation from pyrite. The various reactions occurring on the mineral surface were investigated by a range of techniques, including OH- addition to maintain the grinding pH, EDTA extraction, XPS and ToF-SIMS measurements.Galena flotation and galena separation from pyrite were strongly dependent on the metal oxidation species produced on galena and pyrite surfaces under different grinding conditions. Iron oxidation species depressed both galena and pyrite flotation, whilst lead oxidation species activated pyrite but had little effect on galena. Optimum galena flotation and galena selectivity against pyrite were achieved by selecting grinding conditions that enabled lead and iron oxidation production to be controlled."

"In many volcanogenic base metal deposits of Russia the gold is closely associated with copper sulphides and pyrite. The recovery of gold associated with pyrite is especially difficult problem.Investigations of gold chemical state and mineral forms in copper-zinc sulphide ores of Gay and Barsuchiy Log deposits in the Urals have been made using EPMA, optic image-analysis, XRA, SEM, thermo-electrical force measurements and selective gold leaching experiments.Two gold varieties are determined: 1) free native gold particles (from 5 µm up to 0,25-1,0 mm), which can be liberated after grinding of ore up to 0,074 µm and named “free gold”; 2)”invisible” gold, including finely disseminated native gold and chemically bound gold. The second variety can’t be disclosed during grinding. Free gold can be recovered by gravitation and flotation while the processing behaviour of “invisible” gold is determined by properties of gold-bearing sulphides: pyrite and chalcopyrite. According to results of diagnostic leaching experiments in ores of deposits mentioned above the part by weight of free gold reaches 70%, the part by weight of the ”invisible” gold is up to 20%. About 10% of gold is enclosed in quartz and acid-soluble minerals.Theoretically (taking into account gold distribution data) it’s may anticipate gold recovery by gravitation up to 60%. However after grinding up to 50-60% of class –0,074 mm only about 40% of gold passes into oversize product including 30% of free gold and 8% of ”invisible” one. It can be recovered by gravitation. Remaining free gold and ”invisible” gold can be extracted by flotation – 25% in total. Inevitable gold losses in tailings may reach 8-10%."

"In order to achieve a high recovery of particles finer than 10µm, three types of dry Tower Mill (VD-1, KD-1, KD-2 and KD-3) have been developed. These mills differ from each other in the size of the comminuting part, the inside diameter and shape of the classifying part and the system involved in the collecting process. The last version (KD-3) of tower mills in which the comminuting and classifying operations has been separated, can produce particles finer than 10µm from a limestone ore sizing from 420 to 3360µm. In this tower mill, products in comminuting section are blown up and transported into the classifying column, made of an inverted cone on top of a cylinder, before they agglomerate and settle down. Fine particles are deported and recovered in a cyclone with a central spiral ribbon.Previous studies on the grinding efficiency of the tower mill KD-3 have shown how the maximum size of collected products increased with the airflow velocity, disturbing in the same way a smooth regulation of the grinding operation with the tower mill KD-3. A complete knowledge of factors that influence the maximum size of collected products is needed, therefore, to increase the efficiency of the grindingclassifying operation and ensure a better control over the collected products. The present study deals with this issue and, assuming that the structure of the classifying column could be one of these factors, its internal structure was modified (insertion of vertical plates, cone or horizontal nets) before carrying out comminution tests that would establish a relationship between the inward shape of the column and the maximum size of collected products. It was found that the weight of products collected in the cyclone decreases when a cone or some horizontal nets are inserted inside the column. At the same time, the weight of products collected in the column increases. This is due to the fact that coarse particles blown up from the comminution section collide with the base of the cone or the nets and settle down the bottom of the classifying column. Therefore, the cone and some horizontal nets inserted inside a classifying column, have the particularity to stabilize the maximum size of particles (15.1-17.5µm and 8.4-11.3µm) in the cyclone even when the airflow velocity in duct increased. These tools could of great help in the production of particles of definite size to fit for instance the paper industries requirements (production of limestone material sizing - 10µm as paper filler)."

Microorganisms in AMD (Acid Mine Drainage) were enriched in 9K culture medium. The enrichment was applied to leach copper pyrite after the microbial community structure and metabolism was stable. Before and after bioleaching, the microbial DNA was extracted and applied to RFLP (restricted fragment length polymorphism) analysis to demonstrate the relationship between the leaching efficiency and the change of microbial community. Atomic absorption spectrometry results showed that when concentration of the pulp was 10% and pH were 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5, the leaching rate were 56%, 57% and 34% on the 18th day respectively. These results indicated that the rise of pH resulted in the decrease of leaching rate. In lower pH condition, the growth of microbe was faster: when pH was 1.5, the microbial cell number reached to 1.4×107cells/mL on the 9th day; while pH was 2.5, the microbial cell number decreased to 4×106cells/mL. The analysis of microbial community structure showed that Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Leptospirillum ferrooxidans were dominant species before bioleaching (account for 43% and 32% respectively). And after bioleaching, these two species were still dominant when the initial bioleaching pH were1.5 and 2.0. While the initial bioleaching pH was 2.5, the proportion of these two species decreased. These results demonstrated that the initial bioleaching pH would affect the microbial community structure in bioleaching system at room temperature, and this affect could lead to different copper pyrites bioleaching efficiency.

"Research at Delft University aims to develop systems for automatic inspection and sorting of bulk solids which can be applied in the mineral processing and recycling industry. A recent development includes an automatic sorter based on airport X-ray inspection technology. It is designed for continuous inspection and sorting of 5 - 150 mm solids and has as objective a cost effective and high capacity on-line inspection and sorting.Dual energy X-ray transmission imaging provides instantaneous data about particle dimensions and the atomic number distribution. The system provides particle thickness and average atomic number on a pixel level at scanning speeds between 250 and 500 lines / second. With existing X-ray components inspection speeds between 0.5 and 2 m/s at approximately 1-meter inspection width and between 1.5*1.5 and 5*5 mm2 sensor resolution can be achieved.Imaging algorithms that were developed by Delft University for applications in recycling, waste cleaning and other applications acquire shape, size distribution and composition data. Currently on-line processing of a product at a rate of around 200 particles per second is possible using a standard PC. Experiments with a demonstration X-ray unit indicated good potential for various applications in solids processing. They include continuous inspection of organic content, sulphur, chlorine, ash, and metal distribution. It is applicable for coal cleaning, ore sorting, industrial minerals, and various applications within waste cleaning and recycling. "During the conventional chromite dissolution process; chromite ore concentrates were ground to at least <90 µm using the ball mill and after adding Na2CO3 and leaning material (instead of CaCO3 also residues from the leaching process) at a ratio of e.g. 1:0.75:1.2, depending on the specific formulation, follows the digestion e.g. in a rotary kiln, heated in countercurrent. The reaction time is 3 to 8 h. The calcine is comminuted and leached with water or a thin chromate solution. Depending on the type of ore used, the yield is 75-85 %. The disadvantage of the above-described process is that it is impossible, using current technology, to achieve a complete digestion of the chromite ores and that the chromium-containing residues have to be disposed of as special waste, involving a large financial effort.The subject of this study was the investigation of the effect of vibratory milling on chromite dissolution. The impact stress in the vibratory mill causes the mechanical activation of chromite, which is characterised by lattice defects. The degree of mechanical activation can be quantified by measuring the relative X-ray diffraction intensities at the parent lattice planes of chromite. Each relative X-ray diffraction ratio correlates with a certain degree of digestion. As opposed to vibratory milling, a complete digestion of chromite using a ball mill is impossible, even at extremely long grinding times.In this investigation a chromite concentrate from Pulpinar/Kayseri with content of 44 % Cr2O3 and the Eccentric Vibratory Mill was used. In order to verify the effect of the vibrating grinding on chromite dissolution, reaction kinetic investigations on digestion and leaching were carried out."

"The current sampling systems of ore flows or concentrates are based on the method of cross sections in point sampling and the method of scooping in reducing. The limited number of point samples in sampling and microsamples in reducing lead to big random and probable systematic errors. The paper defines the principles of sampling, which assure the absence of systematic errors and also provides calculation formulas of probable errors in sampling methods of cross and longitudinal sections as well as in samples preparation. The article sets the fundamental laws of sampling: the dependency of minimal mass of gross sample and number of point samples from mass of point sample in sampling from heterogeneous body; the dependency of a sample minimal mass from lumps’ size in preparation of carefully mixed samples; the dependency of point samples’ dispersion from duration of control period. The paper introduces the fundamental notions: lump variance; probable systematic error; methodical error. It also provides a solution of outstanding sample correct application in analysis results calculations. In application of automatic analyzers, mounted in material flows, the probable error connected with sampling, is calculated by the formulas for carefully mixed sampling bodies. The paper describes the developed and introduced sampling systems on the base of combined application of cross and longitudinal sections methods in sampling and preparation of samples. The advantages of this equipment are compactness, reliability, simplicity in service and operation, and for pulps it is adaptability in pipelines. Application of the developed equipment entirely excludes probable systematic error. The new systems of sampling and preparation of samples are introduced at 25 concentrating plants. Introduction of the developed systems at sampling balance points of concentrating plants allowed double reducing balance deficiency."

The beneficiation test on low grade phosphate ore from a state of Russia is carried out. The rougher-cleaner ? re-cleaner system is used in the flotation process, The fineness of grind is 39.07% minus 200 mesh. The result indicates that concentrate containing 31.25% P2O5 can be obtained from the flotation feed assaying 6.18% P2O5, with 93.54% P2O5 recovery. The test result is also a guideline for further development of some currently operated phosphate beneficiation plants.

In this paper High Pressure Grinding Rolls(HPGR) was utilized to pretreat CVRD southern specular hematite for enhancing the pelletization of the refractory hematite. The process parameters of HPGR, balling and firing were optimized, and the mechanism of HPGR was demonstrated by determining the surface activity by means of Blaine specific surface area tester, laser size analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM),X-ray diffraction (XRD), micro calorimeter and pelletability index. It is shown that the pelletization of the refractory hematite was greatly improved. The drop strength of green balls increases from 3.4 times to 13.6 times from 0.5m height while the bentonite dosage decreases from 2.2% to 1.3%.The compressive strength of roasted pellets also reaches 2500N/pellet. The mechanism of the pretreatment of CVRD southern specular hematite concentrates by HPGR is revealed that the surface activity is improved by an increases in specific surface area and the amount of micron size fractions, and higher lattice deformation and defects due to the fractures occurring inside particles during static pressure comminution, resulting in more wetting enthalpy, higher pelletability index and good property of roasting.

Due to not to being our own sources, some energy sources such as oil and natural gas which are used frequently, are not reliable energy sources for our country. Coal is an important energy source that Turkey also has a certain reserve as many countries have. To be able to use for many years the reserves of this source that comes from fossils, there is a great need to make more investigation and development activities on it. On behalf of using more productively the current sources, briquetting facility is represented that commenced production in The Aegean Lignite Establishment in 2005 which is in Manisa, Soma. This facility is a part of General Directorate of Turkish Coal. This facility is run by Soma Coal Establishment that works in return for royalty in a licensed field that belongs to TKI. As the demand of market for 0.5 mm dust coal diminishes, we had to accumulate and stock unmerchantable dust coal. Besides, we have intermixed 0.5- 1 mm powder coal and 0.1 ? 0.5 mm fine powder coal obtained as a result of washing in coal washer with thermic coal with low price as we could not find a client in the market. In this study, the production stages of briquette coal with high quality produced as a result of pressing by mixing 0.5- 1 mm powder coal and 0.1 ? 0.5 mm fine powder coal with molasse and lime, quality control, and data?s obtained about calories and solidity of products were presented. By briquetting of 0.5- 1 mm powder coal and 0.1 ? 0.5 mm fine powder coal washed in coal washer, it became possible to sell these coals on a high unit price and by providing the demand of coal of the market, we contributed to productivity of our firm. "The purpose of the research is to monitor ball mill filling by means of signals usually measured in its electrical drive. The method is based on the mill torque estimated from rotor speed and induction motor stator voltage and currents. New signal processing is presented in both time and frequency domain for measurements in a dry laboratory ball mill. Statistical analysis is applied to time series resulting in good correlation to mill filling. Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and power spectral density (PSD) also resulted in an accurate filling indicator. The proposed method does not need any sensor to be installed directly on the mill and requires only sensors usually available for motor control purposes. The experimental results showed that the method have potential to be used to construct an automatic system for monitoring operational variables in ball mills. The aim of this monitoring is to improve energy efficiency, reliability and productivity.INTRODUCTION Recently, a great number of papers have pointed the importance of ball mill filling monitoring and also of grinding control (Lu, et al., 2014) (Ramasamy, et al., 2005) (Tsamatsoulis, 2014) (Zhou, et al., 2009). Additionally, great amount of control techniques have also been presented with several complexity degrees (Tsamatsoulis, 2014). According to Eremenko (2015) the lack of effective and accurate methods for fill level measurement is the main reason that makes mill optimal control so complicated. It happens because nonlinearity, long time delay and time varying features of the ball mill turns difficult to develop a truly efficient method for monitoring filling. At the same time, fill level has a determining role in charge motion and consequently on particle breakage. For low levels of filling many energy is expended in impacts with very low breakage efficiency. Those impacts can also damage mill liner. In contrast, high levels of filling causes damping effects that reduces breakage and can also affect energy consumption. Based on this it is conclusive that fill level measurement of ball mills is an important issue for grinding efficiency. This fill level information can be used for operators to control ball mills and also for engineers to run simulations and improve confidence levels of circuit designs (Shi, 2016)."
