"Mining in the Ore Mountains (Germany) has taken place for hundreds of years and in several stages. Each stage produced its typical tailing. According to the former state of the art of the processing much valuables could not be extracted. This was caused by complex interlocking of the minerals, low grades, or by upgrading processes not sensitive enough for small particle sizes. Thus the processing of these fractions was uneconomically. Modern technical possibilities and rising metal prices bring these tailings disposals into focus for the processing of strategic metals. Mining disposals can be classified in heaps with coarse, low grade rock, which did not undergo a processing, slags and fly ash from smelting, and tailing disposals from mineral processing. The latter is under investigation to integrate them into a geographic information system. The mineral processing of the material will be part of the database besides information about geographic location, structure, amount of valuables, and details of ownership of the heap. The tailings disposals are composed of coarse, low grade, interlocked particles from density separation processes, medium size particles, which are tailings from flotation, and fines with liberated valuables, which did not undergo flotation. Therefore mineral processing of these disposals comprises the separation of liberated gangue by classification, beneficiation of locked valuables with density separation, liberation of valuables by grinding, and beneficiation of liberated valuables with flotation. The presented work shows the results concerning the composition of one exemplary heap and results of the classification as well as of the preconcentration tests achieved with material from this heap."

As a result of recent scientific and experimental studies new technical devices have been developed for monitoring and control the process of grinding. The description of microprocessor module MILLCONT 1 for control of the loading of the mill and microprocessor density control module DENSIMETER is given in the paper. The improved variant of the automatic system for ore grinding control in single-stage ball mill working in close cycle with a classifier with above mentioned technical means is shown in the paper. The loops for measuring and stabilization of the basic technological parameters (density of the ready pulp ? and fineness of grinding of the pulp ß) are described in the paper. The nowadays economic results in ore grinding process automation are given as well.

In this study, the effect of adaptation of B.subtilis to sphalerite and galena with respect to the selective flotation of sphalerite from the sphalerite-galena synthetic mixture has been examined. The changes in the surface charge of the mineral and the bacterium, cell wall components and the profiles of secreted proteins are discussed. The flotation recovery of galena increases with the increase in the adaptation cycle of B.subtilis to sphalerite and galena, while the flotation recovery of sphalerite is independent of the adaptation cycle with either mineral. From the gel electrophoresis analysis, the protein profile for the unadapted and adapted cells is found to differ distinctly and this may be attributed to varying molecular weight fractions arising from different growth conditions. Electrokinetic measurements showed shifts in the iso-electric points of not only B.subtilis but also of the chosen minerals after adaptation. Additionally, the zeta potential of B.subtilis is found to become less negative after bacterial adaptation to the chosen sulfide minerals, while it showed an increase in the magnitude of surface negative charge after various enzymatic treatments. The change in the surface morphology and cell wall components such as phosphate, uronic acid and acetylated sugars of the bacterial species during adaptation to sphalerite and galena has been assessed. Selective flotation tests on a synthetic mixture of galena and sphalerite confirm that sphalerite can be preferentially floated from galena in the presence of the insoluble fraction of lysed B.subtilis cells initially adapted to sphalerite, with a high selectivity index. In an effort to test the extent to which fundamental fluid mechanics can provide a prediction of particle separation, a study on a simple parallel-sided sluice has been carried out using glass bead and ilmenite mixtures at various particle concentrations and flow rates. Great care was taken to devise a flow splitter at the end of the sluice that permitted accurate measurement of the fluid flow profile and collection of slurry samples, allowing evaluation of the particle species concentration profiles. The actual particle separation taking place was compared to predictions made by first describing the fluid flow by a modified ?law of the wall? model. The hydrostatic pressure variation in the flow was taken into account and the eddy viscosity was calculated from a mixing length expression incorporating Van Driest?s damping function. Using an average density and viscosity provides an explicit expression for the velocity gradient that can be numerically integrated for the flow profile. The particle concentration distributions were then modelled with Hunt?s sediment transport model assuming the particle eddy diffusion coefficient to be the same as that for the water. Hindered settling velocities of the particles were calculated using Brauer and Thiele?s formula, which takes the particle size and density distributions and solids volumetric concentration into account. The resulting predictions of particle separation are shown to be a strong function of the settling velocities of the particles used. Keywords: flowing film concentrators, fluid velocity

The purification process of water-mining carnallite and rough potassium chloride concentrate from Qinghai Salt Lake Industry Group Co. Ltd. are investigated by the preprocessing-reverse flotation technology respectively. The results show that the impurities such as calcium sulfate and sodium chloride can be effectively removed from water-mining carnallite ore and rough potassium chloride concentrate by the new technology, the low-sodium carnallite is obtained and the final potassium chloride product greatly upgraded. The content and the recovery of KCl in the low-sodium carnallite are 25.78% and 97.50%, meanwhile the content of NaCl, CaSO4 in the low-sodium carnallite are 0.56% and 0.24%, and the removal of sodium chloride and calcium sulfate in the low-sodium carnallite are 97.48%, 85.10% respectively. The KCl content and recovery of high quality potassium chloride product are 98.25%, 96.70%, and CaSO4 content is 0.40% with 83.24% calcium sulfate removed in the high quality potassium chloride product.

China is a country with abundant resources of tungsten, taking one of the world?s top-positions regarding both the total reserve and the amount of industrial production. China?s tungsten resources occur mostly in multi-metallic deposits rather than in single-metallic deposits. China?s multi-metallic tungsten ores have the characteristics of coexistence with other valuable components such as molybdenum, bismuth, copper, sulfur and fluorite. These ores are usually low in grade and difficult to process. The technological challenge in mineral processing lies in separation of multi-metallic components in these complex ores and a comprehensive utilization of natural resource. Several cases of industrial practice of processing China?s typical multi-metallic tungsten ores are presented.

Tailing slurry is usually abrasive and possesses high viscosity. This paper examines the existing iron ore beneficiation process and focuses on some of the key environmental issues related to the disposal of tailings. It identifies that almost 32% of the iron ore extracted ends up as tailings and they are usually disposed in slurry form in tailing ponds. By the year 2000, 27 Mt of iron ore tailings were generated in India, which has become one of the biggest waste handling problems to the industry. Characteristics of the tailings vary widely. So the physical nature of tailings cannot be considered separately in isolation without considering the mill effluent from the beneficiation plant. In the present investigation, studies were carried out in three iron ore mines in India to evaluate the characteristics of tailings from the beneficiation plant. The tailing samples were collected from different locations during a time period of one year and analyzed. The results will be discussed and the characteristics of the tailings have been evaluated. The disposal system of tailings at the three mines was evaluated. The research on the settling characteristics of tailings indicates that the area provided in the existing tailing ponds in India is much more than that of the experimental results. This paper concludes that sedimentation tests are essential to design appropriate tailings pond with respect to size. In the proposed scheme it is suggested that an additional unit process, i.e. sedimentation tank be added to the process before the disposal of tailings to the tailing pond.

This paper describes a generic approach to analysing the environmental and economic performance of a global mineral/metal value chain, with the express view of improving the quality of prospective decision-making within the industry in order to ensure more sustainable outcomes. The starting point for this analysis is the development of a global stocks flows and transformations model, for the metal of interest. Any aspect of the value chain, e.g. “metals refining, “goods manufacture”, “use and disposal”, can be assessed, either relative to other stages in the value chain, or in more detail by focusing on the technologies used within that stage. The use of this model as a decision support tool is explored here for the case of copper. Both primary and secondary production routes are enumerated, covering a range of processes, for seven distinct geographic regions round the globe. The value of the modelling approach is explored for different energy mixes. In particular, the case study examines the impact of increased recycling on the (re) distribution of global and regional environmental impacts for technologies-in-place in these different regions.

Gold extraction using iodide leaching from refractory carbonaceous gold ores was studied. Thermodynamic analysis of iodide leaching chemistry had been carried out. Eh-pH diagram of Au-I2-I--H2O leaching system showed that the coordinating active forms from iodides were I3- and I-, while the major coordinate compound formed during iodide leaching was AuI-. For leaching parameters optimization, technological parameters such as I2 concentration, I2 :I- ratio, oxidation assisting agents, liquid/solid ratio, and leaching duration were studied. The leaching results showed that the average Au leaching rate reached 91% and 92% for oxidized ore and roasted primary ore respectively. Leaching process proceeded in weekly acidic or neutral slurry at ambient temperature; the leaching duration was 4 hours. After that gold was extracted from the pregnant liquor by activated carbon adsorption ? desorption ? electrowinning process. Gold recovery was over 93% in the adsorption process, while the gold recovery in electrowinning process was about 95%, provided that the initial gold concentration is 40mg/L or larger. For iodine regeneration it is enough to add hydrogen peroxide in excess into the filtrate after gold electrowinning, all the iodides existing in the solution in any forms would be precipitated in the form of elemental iodine.

"Mining has been going on commercially in Zambia for over 100 years. The backbone of the mining industry has been copper production and its by-products of cobalt and gold. Over these years, the mining industry ownership structure has swung from private ownership to state ownership in 1972, and back to private ownership in 1995. Environmental management was first introduced into the body of Zambian legislation in 1991 through the promulgation of the Environmental Protection and Pollution Control Act (EPPCA). The Act’s main functions included the protection of the environment and control of pollution, and in particular to provide for the health and welfare of the people, animals, plants and the environment in general. This Act, was replaced in 2011 by the Environmental Management Act (EMA). The new Act has a number of new elements including: mainstreaming environment in national planning, it provides for the domestication of multilateral environmental agreements, enhances public participation issue, creates a central environmental information depositary, elaborates access to information principles, establishes an environment fund, creates enforcement orders, provides for both Zambia Environmental Management Authority and members of the public to sue for damages following environmental pollution, and provides for the appointment of honorary Inspectors. In addition to this, the Mines and Minerals Act of 1995 provided, for the first time, a section on environmental management in the mining sector. This section also created the Environmental Protection Fund (for mining), and made it obligatory to undertake environmental impact assessment before mining permits could be issued. The Environmental Protection Fund has now been established, as provided for by the law, and currently has more than USD9.0 million in the account. Secondly, environmental auditing is now being carried out annually on mines around the country, the effect of this has been a significant improvement in the environmental management of mining in Zambia. This paper looks at the response of the Zambian mining sector to these pieces of environmental management legislation, and the direction that the mining sector is expected to take on environmental management going forward."

"In this work, we studied the mechanochemical activation of chalcopyrite by vertically stirred ball milling (VSBM) to enhance the dissolution of copper. By using x-ray diffraction (XRD) and laser diffraction particle size analysis, we investigated the effect of milling and milling conditions on particle size and phase composition of the chalcopyrite concentrate. To elucidate the efficiency of VSBM towards the mechanochemical activation of chalcopyrite, we also conducted leaching experiments in sulfuric acid-ferric sulfate media. Under all investigated milling conditions, the VSBM determined a dramatic decrease of particle size from over 100 µm of P80% up to about 13 µm. Furthermore, the XRD of the ground chalcopyrite specimens highlighted a partial oxidation of the mineral. In leaching, upon grinding by VSBM, the increase of copper extraction ranged from a minimum of +10% to a maximum of +40%, depending on the grinding conditions. In order to elucidate whether the dissolution enhancement was a consequence of the decreased particle size or of an induced mechanochemical reaction, we performed leaching experiments on activated and non-activated chalcopyrite sample having the same particle size. In addition, we determined the activation energy of leaching before and after vertically stirred ball milling. The leaching results on samples with the same particle size highlighted a greater copper extraction and higher dissolution rates upon mechanochemical activation. Whether performing grinding by VSBM or not, the leaching kinetics was found to be controlled by the chemical reaction on the surface of the chalcopyrite particle. By grinding the chalcopyrite concentrate by VSBM, the activation energy of leaching slightly decreased from 66 to 58 kJ/mol. INTRODUCTION Due to the increasing demand of copper, low grade ores and refractory minerals like chalcopyrite are expected to become the main copper source in the next years (Klauber, 2008). As a low-grade sulfide, chalcopyrite shall be processed hydrometallurgically. However, due to the formation of a protective layer of elemental sulfur during the oxidizing leaching, the dissolution of copper is slow and/or incomplete (De Bernardi and Carlesi, 2013). Therefore, the development of new technologies to enhance the extraction of copper from chalcopyrite is highly required."

"Air core, as an inevitable phenomenon of rotational flow field inside hydrocyclone, has a major impact on hydrocyclone’s separation characteristics. The air core formation process, its structural features and its influencing factors were investigated systematically in this paper. Numerical study on the air core of a f50 mm hydrocyclone was carried out using a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling software package ANSYS/Fluent with the selection of Reynolds Stress Model (RSM) for the turbulence model and Volume of Fluid (VOF) for capturing the air-liquid interface. Physical experiments were conducted under the same geometry and operation conditions and the particle image velocimetry (PIV) technology was used to measure the liquid flow. The CFD results are compared with the experimental measurement with good agreement demonstrated. The air core was formed generally at around 0.7 s, air outsides of the air core was eliminated completely after 1.7 s. The centreline axial velocities and the water blocking hydrocyclone simulations showed that air of the air core entered the hydrocyclone from the underflow area and exhausted from the overflow area, but there was also some air flowing into the air core from the overflow area. The largest swing of the air core occurred on the top of the underflow pipe, and a protuberance similar to the shape of Adam’s apple appeared when the air entered the vortex finder. CFD simulation results also showed that the air core diameter was decided by axial position and parameters of hydrocyclone. The structural parameters have more effects on the air core diameter than the operational parameters."

Mechanically-induced chemical reactions between natural beach ilmenite (FeTiO3) and silicon (Si) have been examined by a combination of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) analyses. The effect of various milling time on the phase transformation, crystallite size, and lattice strain of a beach sand ilmenite with silicon, and on their leaching behavior in hydrochloric acid (HCl) has been investigated. For mechanically activated FeTiO3, the crystallite size decreased and lattice strain increased monotonically with time of milling. However, the mechanochemically synthesized ilmenite with silicon showed a relatively smaller crystallite size and greater lattice strain compared with the mechanically activated ilmenite under the same milling condition. In accordance with the elapse of milling time, the intensity of both pure FeTiO3 and mechanically activated FeTiO3 gradually decreased. However, in case of the mechanochemically synthesized ilmenitereduction of FeTiO3 by silicon resulted in formation of rutile TiO2 at the milling time of 20 h and afterwards. Additional leaching experiments were carried out at an HCl/ilmenite (wt%) ratio of 20:1. The concentration of HCl was 3 M and the reaction temperature ranged from 70 to 90 oC. Mechanical activation was observed to significantly enhance the dissolution rates of both iron (Fe) and titanium (Ti) in HCl. Particularly, effects of both milling time and silicon addition on the dissolution rates of titanium and iron were significant, while those of temperature were relatively minor under the conditions investigated in this study. With increasing of mining depth, many iron ores in Liaoning Province contain carbonates such as siderite and ankerite. The emergence of these carbonates in ores creates a fatal impact on the running producing process of anionic reverse flotation in Dong Anshan Sintering Plant, which leads to ?concentrate and tailing no separated?. And its reason is still unknown. Moreover, siderite, despite that its ferric theoretic grade is only 48.2%, however, do not affect the blast furnace utilization factor, therefore, can be used as raw materials in ironmaking. In order to solve the separate problem of iron ore containing carbonates, five pure minerals, martite, magnetite, quartz, siderite and ankerite, were selected for a series single flotation experiment. The aim was to discover the flotation difference of these minerals, furthermore, to explore a new flow sheet for the iron ore containing carbonates. The results of single mineral flotation experiment reveal that the combination regulators, starch and CaCl2, in different pH extent, can make these minerals taking on obvious flotation difference, which make it possible to process the iron ore containing carbonates. A new flow sheet, step-flotation, to process iron ore containing carbonates is explored, that is, first step, direct-flotation processing, is to eliminate the bad effect that the carbonates bring in flotation system by collecting carbonates under neutral condition; the second step, reverse?flotation processing, is to get qualified iron concentrate by collecting quartz under alkaline condition. Manual mixed ore sample were processed successfully through this new flowsheet under proper reagent system, which has absolute advantage compared with routine flowsheet. Actual ore sample of compound magnetic separation concentrate were processed successfully both open and closed circuit experiment through this new flowsheet. SEM and EDS were used to probe the reason why carbonates affect the regular processing. It is analyzed that moderate floatability of siderite and its coating on the surface of hematite and quartz make the phenomenon ?concentrate and tailing no separated?. This research provides a reasonable processing scheme for iron ores containing carbonates and can be used for reference in processing other complicated, refractory iron ore.

The potassium demand for agriculture purposes has increased in Brazil, which has great deficit of internal demands. Potassium-rich rocks have been used as fertilizers as technological alternatives for agriculture aimed to reduce the amount of chemicals and the sector dependence for such products. Vermiculite tailings from União Brasileira de Mineração - UBM, at Santa Luzia - PB, was studied aiming their application in agriculture by potassium release. The sample was analyzed by XRF and XRD; studies on release kinetic with particles smaller than 2 mm added of organic acids (citric and oxalic) at 10-2 mol/L concentration; samples were analyzed by XRD after kinetic assays. The work was conducted using a shaker incubator at 300-rpm agitation and time variation to better understand the potassium availability in the ground. Results show the presence of K2O at 3.46% concentration. Citric and oxalic acids increased the release speed to almost the same level with speed coefficients (k) of 2.61x10-2 h-1/2 and 2.55x10-2 h-1/2 respectively. In statistical terms for both acids, the linear equation represents more than 99.0% of the experimental assays. Stonemeal was applied to banana seedlings in experiment conducted in a greenhouse. The use of vermiculite tailings in banana seedlings promoted potassium absorption, which influenced its growth. The amount of potassium liberated from vermiculite tailings could be used as a long-term alternative to fertilizers in agriculture cultures.

"As easily mined gold deposits are becoming increasingly rare, gold producers are turning to the processing of ores with polymetallic and copper mineralization. These base metals can create metallurgical and waste handling/disposal challenges, which can render the project uneconomic. Base metals such as copper compete for the cyanide reagent used to extract gold, necessitating the need to increase cyanide volumes and consequently, cyanide consumption costs. Copper will also stabilize in tailings water as weak acid dissociable cyanide, a form that is both difficult and costly to destruct. SART (sulphidization-acidification-recycling-thickening) process technology can be applied to remove base metal interferences in gold projects. SART breaks the copper-cyanide complex and precipitates the copper as a saleable copper sulphide concentrate. With the copper removed, the cyanide can be regenerated as free cyanide for recycle to the gold recovery process. This improves cyanide utilization efficiency and mitigates copper presence in tailings. Additionally, copper recovery generates an incremental revenue source to further improve project economics. Engineering Dobersek GmbH together with BioteQ developed a SART and AVR testing program to recover cyanide and maximize operational efficiencies at a gold processing plant in Kazakhstan with high cyanide consumption in the leach circuit. Results from on-site testing demonstrated that up to 99.98% of copper can be removed and precipitated as copper sulphide and 60-90% of cyanide can be recovered from the AVR and recycled for leaching, reducing total overall cyanide use. This paper provides an overview of the testing methodology and results together with a discussion on the potential of SART to improve gold production operations to deliver both environmental and economic benefits."

Water based paint formulations consist of some industrial minerals with quantities varying from 20 to 50 %. Quality of paint is directly related to these minerals used as pigment or filler in the production. Titanium dioxide is the most important and expensive pigment in paint formulations. Other minerals such as calcite and calcined kaolin are used as filler and mainly as a substitute for TiO2. Consequently, particle-particle interactions including adsorption, coating and size distribution of pigment mixture directly affects the paint quality. In the present paper, a new type of pigment mixture for possible use in architectural water based paints was developed through grinding. The effect of different types of grinding methods on physical properties of TiO2 and calcite mixture and the quality of paint produced by these mixtures have been revealed. Three different types of mills; conventional ball mill, vibratory ball mill and high-speed attritor were used for grinding of TiO2 and calcite. Viscosity, zeta potential and particle size distributions were used to characterize the pigment mixtures obtained upon grinding. The quality of paint was evaluated by standards based on both wet and dry paints such as viscosity, density, opacity and gloss. The paint produced with the pigment mixtures prepared in vibratory ball mill and high speed attritor showed improvement in physical properties particularly in the distribution and dispersion of mineral particles. Copper metal has important role in the basic industrials, as if it did not exist, modern human life would not develop! Copper leaching, as the first step, is important step in copper production processes. In this research, efficient factors on the leaching have been investigated. For this reason, four efficient factors on leaching namely pH, liquid to solid ratio (L/S), temperature and time, as independent variables, were optimized using response surface (RSM) with D-optimal. A quadratic equation was used to create response and contours. According to the results from analysis of variance (ANOVA), the value of determination coefficient (R2=96.77%) indicates that the model was good fit. Optimum experiment condition also was found: pH of 1, L/S of 8.24, temperature of 26.06 ? and time of 43.64 min. At this condition, the maximum recovery of copper was equaled to 92/38 in which good desirability achieved.

Coking of coal blends using high volatile coals with poor coking abilities to produce a high quality coke for blast furnace application can be achieved by compacting the coal blend prior to the carbonization process. Here densification up to a relative material density of 80 %, i.e. a compact density around 1100 kg/m3, has proven to be advantageous. Coal is compacted by stamping, if the so-called stamp charging process applied. Compacting of the coal by pressing is practised in case of the cokemaking with so-called heat-recovery ovens. Stamped and pressed coal cakes require over the cake volume uniform high density and mechanical stability. Besides the aspects of the coal selection, the efficiency of the process is mainly determined by the operating parameters compacting time and compacting energy for coal cake making. At the Department for Mechanical Process Engineering & Solids Processing of the Technical University Berlin the two sub-processes of densification and strengthening during stamping and during pressing are theoretically and experimentally investigated using specially developed lab-scale compacting test units and a strength test device. Describing cake density in terms of coal properties for a given coal and measured compacting energy input then leads to a compacting equation with the so-called Stampability as the integral model parameter for the stamping process. For the pressing process the cake density can be calculated with the measured compacting pressure and the Compressibility factor, respectively. Investigations were carried out to provide evidence of a significant influence of coal type, coal surface moisture, coal granulometric and mechanical properties on the densification process. The overall objective of the work is to establish a comprehensive mathematical model on the compacting behavior of large coal bulk quantities and the optimization of the compacting processes by stamping and by pressing.
