"We report here on current topics of our project, based on the results of recent cruises and laboratory analysis, about the diversity of compositions and configurations of the hydrogenetic ferromanganese deposits in several Northwestern Pacific Seamounts. This recent research has discovered important aspects of these deposits regarding the mode of variation with water depth, topography and substrate geology, possible bacterial mediation, temporal variation with age in mineralogy, and major and minor element chemistry. All cruises and analysis have been supported by the facilities and staff of the Japan Agency of Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), Japan Oil, Gas, and Metal resources Corporation (JOGMEC), Geological Survey of Japan, and Kochi Core Center (KCC) using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), a monitored rock drilling system, dredges, and manned-submersibles in the NW Pacific seamounts,The results indicate that most of the rock outcrops on the slopes, shoulders, and much of flat tops are covered with maximum 10-cm thick crusts, but the thickness, metal content, and microstructural properties are not always uniform over the seamounts, but variable in space and time. The micro-stratigraphic description of whole-rock samples indicates a history of deposition and sedimentation, which control the diversity in bulk composition and abundance caused by the variable incorporation of iron-manganese precipitates into the deposits during variable environmental conditions. We conclude that hydrogenetic precipitation of iron-manganese oxide has taken place for more than 20 million years at a growth rate about 4-6 mm/my, in water depths below 1000m. The results indicate a fairly continuous and constant metal deposition since the middle Miocene age or older to the present. Our case study of geological sciences at a model seamount within the Japanese EEZ suggests that scientific knowledge is useful and essential in exploring mineral deposits, economic estimation, and designing systems, if supported by well-combined geological and oceanographic and biological research. The distribution map of ferromanganese deposits and geological map will be published soon in 2017 to be issued by the Geological Survey of Japan."

The Marine Mining Technology Center (MMTC) was authorized by an act of the United States Congress in 1996. The act established several marine minerals research centers in the U.S., including one at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The Alaska MMTC is funded through the Minerals Management Service of the Department of the Interior and concentrates its research in the Artic seas region. Recent research projects at the MMTC include, among others, a geographic information system (GIS) application to the gold placer deposits offshore Nome, Alaska, a marine gold placer reserve definition model using a neural network, and development of an expert system model for submarine tailings disposal (STD) planning and decision-making. Although geostatistics remains the most prevalent method used today for ore grade estimation, researchers have made numerous improvements over the years for accurately predicting grades of ore using various other estimation techniques. As a result, the neural network has recently emerged as an alternative to geostatistics for grade estimation purposes. A neural network is a non-linear, model-free estimator that is well-suited for noisy and/or sparse data environments. Neural networks perform best with non-linear spatial data, contrary to the stationary assumption of ordinary Kriging techniques. In the marine placer ore reserve definition model, the neural network technique was used to estimate placer gold reserves offshore Nome. This study demonstrated the utility of neural network modeling over other traditional ore reserve estimation methods, especially for high cut-off grades. Some of the relevant issues of neural network modeling were also addressed in the study. In testing, the neural network produced results that were close to those from geostatistical techniques including Kriging, polygon, and inverse distance methods.

Gas Hydrates (Methane Hydrates) are solid, ice ? like substances composed of water and natural gas. They occur naturally in areas of the world where methane and water can combine at appropriate conditions of temperature and pressure and are found in the ocean bottom sediments and in some permafrost areas. Besides temperature and pressure, factors like bathymetry, sediment thickness, sedimentation rates, and total organic carbon content (TOC) also control gas hydrate formation in the sea. The stability of gas hydrates depends on the critical high pressure ? low temperature combination (0 - 17 bars, 0 - 25°C), which in turn dependent on the mix of gases from which the mineral is formed. As the critical parameters can be altered by deposition, erosion or slumping of sediments, formation or melting of ice cover, rise and fall of sea level and sudden temperature changes induced by tectonic activities, current flows or volcanisms, the gas hydrates tend to be very unstable. The Indian offshore is promising with the occurrence of gas hydrates in a total of about 80,000 km2 area in the bathymetry range of 700 to 3000 m as reported in the earlier surveys. A gas hydrate stability zone thickness map was prepared using bathymetry and sea bottom temperatures along the continental margins of India. This map is expected to provide the depth window while searching for the ?Bottom Simulating Reflectors? (BSR). The study indicates that a minimum water depth of 750 m is required for the formation of gas hydrates, and above which the chances for gas hydrates occurrences appear minimal despite other favourable conditions like presence of sediment rich organic content etc. Single channel seismic analog records (Gupta et al., 1998) suggests that Western Continental Margin of India (WCMI) offers greater promise with to gas hydrate occurrences, particularly with regard to the number of BSRs traced on the analog records as compared to the earlier surveys.

Data and information for this study were collected in June-July 2009 onboard the RV Yuzhmorgeologiya in the area covers about 7000 km2 in the eastern part of the CCFZ between 10º05? - 10º55?N and 119º25? ? 121º08?W. In accordance with the IOM research program the cruise was intend to acquire both geological and environmental data and information necessary for delineation of nodule deposits and also data for identification of the baseline of benthic ecosystem. Having implementation of its 15-year plan of work for exploration under the contract with ISA, current activities of IOM were focused on nodule fields within prime areas that could be mined in the future. Bottom photographs obtained by towed deep-sea vehicle NEPTUN along 6 profiles with common length about 300 km (Fig. 1). In total, about 11,500 digital photographs (what cover approximately 40,000 m2 of the ocean floor) were analyzed for assessment of nodule coverage and investigation of megafauna (animals, visible in photographs, the dimension more than 2 cm). The giant single-cell organisms Xenophyophorida were the most multiple animals in seabed photographs. Their number on the site area averaged 1187 ind/ha. However, the vertical camera position does not allow counting all xenophyophorids, therefore their valid number is represented 10 times more. According to all available information these protozoans play the relevant role in assemblage of deep-water environment, giving for other animal groups an [ ] additional source of nutrition and a substratum for settlement and attachment. The ophiuroids are found in assemblage with xenophyophorids in many cases, standing on a sediment at their base.

"INTRODUCTIONFerromanganese (Fe-Mn) crusts are a kind of marine chemical sediment composed of Fe and Mn oxy-hydroxides as well as small amounts of clastic sediments, which are ubiquitously found on the surface of slopes of seamounts and oceanic plateaus at depths from 900 to 5500 meters below sea level (mbsl). Fe-Mn crusts contain extremely high concentrations of useful minor metals such as Co, Ni, Te, REEs, and thus are expected as submarine mineral resources. Also, Fe-Mn crusts record the change of chemical compositions of seawater during last several tens million years, which allow us to obtain clues to clarify the paleoenvironmental conditions at the time of its deposition. However, occurrence, chemical compositions, microbial community and growth patterns of ferromanganese crusts are yet fully understood. Hence, a comprehensive study on the genesis of ferromanganese crusts, such as growth rates and enrichment processes of elements, is required to better understand their resource potential as well as their applications to paleoceanographic study.Based on the resource potential of ferro-manganese crust, the project entitled “Next- Generation Technology for Ocean Resources Exploration” was launched as one of the governmental projects to develop the exploration technology based on the scientific research on the submarine resources such as hydrothermal deposits (e.g., a poster by Kawada et al.), ferro-manganese crusts. We have made several research cruise to seamounts in the north-western Pacific such as Takuyo-Daigo and Takuyo-Daisan seamounts (Fig. 1) ."

In the western Woodlark Basin, propagation of seafloor spreading is occurring directly into the continental crust of Papua new Guinea. The spreading is not strictly in a back-arc tectonic setting, rather it appears associated with microplate rotations related to the complex convergence of the Indo-Australian and Pacific plates in the southeastern Pacific region. Volcanic rocks along the western Woodlark spreading axis range from normal mid- ocean ridge basalts to basaltic andesites with back-arc geochemical affinities. Rare peralkaline rhyolites also occur. Hydrothermal deposits occur at a basaltic andesite volcano located on the neovolcanic zone near its westernmost propagating tip. Franklin Seamount is a 250m-high cone constructed largely of pillow lavas and talus which sits astride a 450m-high ridge of similar lavas oriented subnormal to the spreading direction. At its crest, 2150m below sea level, there is a 100m-deep caldera.

Accumulation of cobalt -rich ferromanganese crusts on Pacific seamounts located off-ridge in the Hawaiian EEZ, represents a complex process that involves geologic aging of the seamounts, geographic transportation- of the seamounts on the Pacific plate during the past 80 million years, and geochemical history of the oceans for that period. A comparative study of the building and erosion processes of the young Loihi Submarine Volcano, located south of the Island of Hawaii , and the 80 million year old Cross Seamount, located west of Hawaii , shows that both edifices show wide armchair-shaped talus chutes and intervening ridges of exposed dikes. The similarity between the observed mass wasting process on Loihi and Cross suggests that the slopes of submarine volcanoes are geologically unstable from the time of their origin on the seafloor through their entire geological history. The slopes of Cross are covered by coalesced ferromanganese crust covered talus, steep exposed dike faces, and crust covered dike ridges. A study of the stratigraphy of the crusts shows a range of thicknesses and number of unconformities present. The thickest crusts, up to 8 centimeters, are found preserved within the larger coalesced slabs along the shallower slopes of the talus chutes and along the crests of the ridges between water depths of 400 and 1800 meters. The platinum content was used in stratigraphic correlation between the crusts in the coalesced slabs and those collected from ridges with the PISCES V submersible. Recognizing that the planned commercial exploitation of polymetallic nodules in the deep sea should be accompanied by environmental studies in order to protect this largest and least understood ecosystem of our planet, the German Ministry for Research and Technology has since 1989 funded a longterm and large-scale disturbance-recolonization (DISCOL) experiment in the abyssal Peru Basin of the equatorial South Pacific Ocean. The circular study site is located at 4150m depths and encompasses about 10km2 of relatively flat, heavily sedimented sea floor with low (< 15%) nodule coverage near an existing German nodule mining exploration license area. The RV SONNE, a large and well-equipped multi-purpose research vessel, served as platform for all environmental cruises conducted to date. The initial DISCOL expedition (SO-61, Feb.-March 1989) was carried out in two legs. During DISCOL 1/1, a study site was selected, a pre-disturbance baseline assessment was undertaken, and sea floor disruption was begun using the "plow-harrow", a uniquely designed disturber device towed repeatedly across the circular study area. During DISCOL 1/2, disturber deployments continued until the device had created 78 criss-crossing and partially overlapping tracks along which nodules were essentially plowed under while sediment from up to 15cm below the seabed had been turned over and exposed at the surface. In addition to the obvious within disturber track impacts, sediment mobilized by plowing drifted off with the prevailing near-bottom current and redeposited downstream, blanketing nearby areas not directly disturbed. Immediately after the disturbance phase, an initial post-impact sampling series was performed. The DISCOL Experimental Area (DEA) was revisited about six months (DISCOL 2, SO-64, Sept. 1989), three years (DISCOL 3, SO-77, Feb. 1992), and seven years (ATESEPP SO-106, Jan.-March 1996) after disturbance to collect further post-impact samples, monitor changes in the benthic community and follow the recolonization process. In addition to benthic community studies, plankton investigations were initiated during the third DISCOL cruise (SO-77) and continued during three further cruises (SO-78, SO-79 and SO-80/2) in 1992.

Prospectivity modeling of seafloor massive sulphide (SMS) deposits has been completed over the Kermadec Arc-Colville Ridge area using the GIS based weights of evidence and fuzzy logic modeling techniques. SMS deposits are the current equivalent of ancient onshore volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) ore deposits. These high-grade deposits are formed on the seafloor and commonly consist of a black smoker and metal rich sediment mound complex resulting from the discharge of hydrothermal fluids (up to 400°C) from fractures on the seafloor. Metal sulphides are continuously precipitated in response to mixing of high-temperature hydrothermal fluids with ambient seawater. Accumulation of metal sulphides has led to SMS deposits being potentially major sources of copper, zinc, lead and other metals such as gold, silver, which to date remain untapped. Modeling of SMS deposits was undertaken to illustrate the power of GIS modeling for seafloor resource evaluation and how it can be used to quickly identify and rank in terms of the most likely prospective areas of the seafloor where new SMS deposits might exist. The mineral deposit modeling was constrained by the mineral systems concept which defines those parts of a mineralisation system that are critical to the ore-forming process. The deposits are typically formed in extensional tectonic settings, including both submerged tectonic margins and sea-floor spreading. Volcanic vent systems and underlying dykes, stocks and sills are the sources of heat that are responsible for converting sea water drawn down through fractures in the oceanic crust into an ore-forming hydrothermal fluid. This fluid is then capable of leaching metals and elements from surrounding footwall rocks, which are then transported upwards via the convection of hydrothermal fluids. The ore materials are then precipitated within the black smoker field as massive sulphides due to the mixing of high-temperature (250-400°C), metal-rich hydrothermal fluids with cold (about 2°C) oxygen bearing seawater.

In April 2010 three REMUS6000 series autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) have been used to simultaneously map large areas near the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (3°N) axis in water depths ranging from 1,000m to 4,000m. One vehicle was provided by the Leibniz-Institute for Marine Science, IFM-GEOMAR (Kiel, Germany) the other two were provided by the Waitt Institute for Discovery (La Jolla, USA) and managed by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (USA). The REMUS6000 vehicles, manufactured by Hydroid Inc. (USA), are "cigar-shaped" vehicles (4m long and weighing approx. 900kg) and consist of a tapered forward section, a cylindrical midsection and a tapered tail section. An internal titanium strongback, which extends through much of the vehicle length, provides the structural integrity and acts as a mounting platform for syntactic foam, equipment housings, various sensors and release mechanisms. The AUVs can be used in various payload configurations such as multibeam bathymetry, electronic still camera, or subbottom profiler. For these missions the electronic still camera configurations was installed. An EDGETECH 2200M dual frequency (120/410 kHz) side scan sonar was used to map the seafloor, but other frequencies are readily available for more options in resolution and range. The 120 kHz side scan transmitter was used for most missions in order to map large areas (increased range) and to be able to fly at higher altitudes (between 70m and 90m) above the rough seabed encountered in this area. The maximum slant range was between 600m and 700m on both sides resulting in a swath width of up to 1.2 km. Line spacing ranged from nearly 1,000m in flat areas down to 400m in steep terrain. Side-scan mosaics were generated with a 1m resolution. Selected areas were targeted by the higher resolution 410 kHz transmitter as well as by bottom photographs flying as low as a few meters above the seabed. The vehicles navigated autonomously using a combination of inertial navigation (Kearfott T-24 or T-16 INS) and long baseline acoustic navigation by computing their range to two moored acoustic transponders. Working efficiently in this rough topography at speeds above 3 knots was only possible due to the obstacle avoidance capabilities of these AUVs.

Deep ocean mining is experiencing a rebirth following many years of low levels of activity. Large scale mining is being projected as just over the horizon. A lot has been made of the advances in deep water oil and gas developments over the last thirty years, and how this technology is directly applicable to ocean mining. The authors present their views on this from a perspective of a legacy of participating in the development of manganese nodule mining systems in the 1970s, followed by thirty years in the deepwater oil & gas arena. While it is true that great advances have been made in subsea technology, the differences between mining and oil and gas recovery should not be diminished. Fundamentally, oil and gas are stored in compact reservoirs under pressure. Any intervention leads to flow of the material up a pipe to the surface. The seabed hard minerals are stuck in place, either adhering to sticky pelagic sediment (nodules) or bonded together as hard rock (massive sulfides). The minerals require complex machinery in order to be extracted, sized, concentrated and lifted to the surface. Once at the surface the ore must be dewatered, de-fined and transferred to shore for processing. The overflow from this dewatered product must return to the sea in an environmentally satisfactory manner. These steps involve technology unique to mining that has to be addressed in a methodical fashion before commercial mining systems can be designed. The presentation will discuss the critical technical challenges of deepsea mining and thoughts on different routes to commercialization. The program will address the critical technical challenges, as perceived by the authors, and steps required to address them. Hydrothermal fluids emanating from the seafloor rise as buoyant plumes, entraining ambient bottom sea water on the way up, until they reach density equilibrium and spread laterally in a direction that is governed by near-bottom currents. Plumes provide targets for focussing exploration for seafloor polymetallic sulfide deposits associated with active hydrothermal vents because their lateral and vertical extent is commonly orders of magnitude larger than the vent field from which they originate. Black smokers can inject on the order of 10,000 µg of particles per liter into a sea water column that normally contains only about 10 µg of particles per liter. The resulting plume should be characterized by increased particulate concentration with respect to background sea water and, therefore, provide a measurable gradient towards the source of venting. By utilizing the ability of particles to scatter light, we employed a real¬time, acoustically telemetered, nephelometer to measure this gradient, and mapped the size, shape and particle concentration of plumes at an active spreading center on the Southern Explorer Ridge at lat 49°45.6&apos;N and long 130°16.2&apos;W. Isopach and particle concentration data indicate the presence of two separate but overlapping plumes. The first is associated with a known vent field called Magic Mountain; the second with a new field called AGOR 171, 1.2

The State of Hawaii has expressed concern over deterioration of the tourist beaches at Waikiki, which are becoming seriously depleted of sand. In this report the options for acquisition, transportation and placement .of sand on the beach are examined with respect to feasibility and cost. Ten sources of sand were compared, including commercial, from Australia, Maui, and Barbers Point (3), deposits offshore of the Reef Runway (3), offshore of Waikiki (3), and offshore of Molokai from the Penguin Bank (1).

Seafloor polymetallic sulphides are distributed in the EEZ of Japan, including substantial deposits in the Okinawa Trough and Izu-Bonin back-arc basin. In this new frontier, the successful development of these resources in Japan is expected to bring about a new domestic supply of mineral resources. The initial stages of this development are authorized by the Basic Plan on Ocean Policy, approved by the Japanese Cabinet on April 26, 2013, and the Plan for the Development of Marine Energy and Mineral Resources, formulated by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) on December 24, 2013. In 2008, the Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC), commissioned by METI, began a survey and technological development programme for the development of the seafloor polymetallc sulphides (PMS) based on these Plans. The examination of four different fields: the evaluation of the amount of the resource, environmental assessment, mining technology, and processing & smelting technology, are concurrently promoted, aiming for commercialization as soon as possible. Based on the results of research for properties of geomorphology and marine environments of the target test sites in the Okinawa trough, which have been ongoing for several years, the preparation of the pilot lifting test included an in-situ excavation and crushing test conducted using test excavating and crushing systems.

Volcanic arcs, including both island arc and intra-oceanic arc systems, combined extend for ~22,000 km around the Earth, with the majority (~20,000 km) occurring in the Pacific basin. These arcs are host to over 700 volcanoes of which ~200 are submarine and as such represent great potential for hosting massive sulfide deposits formed at seafloor hydrothermal vent sites. The Kermadec arc extends for ~1,200 km northeastwards from the North Island of New Zealand and forms the southern part of the ~2,500-km-long Tonga-Kermadec intra-oceanic arc system. At least 94 volcanoes are known to exist along this system with 74, or about 80%, being submarine. At least 33 volcanoes occur along the Kermadec part of the arc with all but one (Raoul Island) being submarine. The first sulphides recovered from the entire Tonga-Kermadec arc were in 1996 from the Brothers and Rumble II West volcanoes of the southern Kermadec arc. The 1998 R/V Sonne research cruise recovered a more comprehensive suite of mineralised samples from Brothers, and also found evidence for hydrothermal venting at Monowai, Vulkanolog, Rumble III and Clark volcanoes. The March 1999 NZAPLUME cruise systematically surveyed 260 km of the southern Kermadec arc and found that 7 of 13 volcanoes were hydrothermally active, with the vent fields either located within calderas (e.g., Brothers, Healy, Rumble II West) or atop volcanic cones (e.g., Clark, Tangaroa, Rumble V, Rumble III). The May 2002 NZAPLUME II cruise surveyed a further ~580 km of the mid-segment of the Kermadec arc, from Brothers to volcano &apos;L&apos;, a submarine volcanic edifice 35 km NW of Macauley Island. This cruise surveyed 13 major volcanoes and 8 smaller volcanic edifices and confirmed hydrothermal venting at the Vulkanolog site, and discovered new vent fields atop a volcanic cone within Macauley caldera, immediately offshore Macauley Island, and another at the summit of volcano &apos;L&apos;. A further new site was found atop a volcanic knoll immediately S of Healy caldera during time-series sampling of the vent sites found during the 1999 cruise. All the vent sites discovered along the Kermadec arc occur in water depths between 1650 and 150 m.

INTRODUCTION The last decade has given rise to an increasing number of deep-sea mining concepts (DSMCs) outlining technical solutions for the production chain from seafloor mining to mineral or metal extraction. The vast technological and logistical challenges coupled with immature but rapidly evolving technology has spawned a great variety in proposed concepts, and the exact implications of the phrase ‘best available technology’ is very much an open question. DSMCs differ significantly with respect to choice of technology, technological readiness level, degree of resource utilization, logistics, OPEX and CAPEX requirements, overall profitability, legal and political implications, not to mention environmental impact. Hence, a system for classifying concepts could provide a useful identification and structuring tool when performing economic, judicial or environmental assessments of DSMCs, as well as offering a general terminology to describe concepts sharing fundamental traits. This abstract proposes a DSMC classification system based on how a concept makes use of mineral separation at the different stages in the ore’s journey from the deposit to the ocean surface and ultimately to onshore facilities. Mineral separation, as a process step, is the key factor in determining both the state and mass flow of materials along the production chain and has, as such, a decisive effect on economy and environmental impact of any deep-sea mining project. A DSMC that is based on bringing the entire volume of broken ore to onshore facilities for processing will look very different from a concept based on pre-concentration (i.e. mineral separation) at the seafloor. Whereas the latter offers savings in the form of reduced energy cost for vertical transport, it also represents a substantial additional technological challenge. Furthermore, whether or not a concept relies on mineral processing at the seafloor or on a floating facility at the ocean surface above the deposit also determines the point at which mineral separation waste (i.e. tailings) must be managed. Different concepts offer different opportunities for tailings deposition, and are at the same time bound by different requirements.

The continental shelves occupy a vast area of Russia and contain complexes of commercial placer minerals. Of prime importance are Cenozoic placers of valuable minerals including gold, cassiterite, diamonds, chromite, platinoids, and minerals of titanium, zirconium and rare earth elements, biogenic amber and fossil ivory (1). Commercial placer minerals are associated with shelf placer formation zones (SPFZ). These zones are located at junctions of marginal orogens and shelf troughs in morphostructures where upwarping, subsidence, and sign-variable neotectonic movements are not significant. The SPFZs are characterized by ancient buried leveling planes with mantles of waste, series of wave-cut aggradation terraces on land and beneath the sea, and drowned and buried stream valleys. The occurrence of mineral placers in the SPFZs was caused by endogenic mineralization and exogenic placer hosted formation. Concentrations of commercial biogenic minerals are associated with areas of burial of biogenic material (release of resins by plants and theriofauna thanatocoenoses) and with their transition zones. Since the Oligocene, alternations in marine transgression-regression have dominated the shelf areas. This has resulted in the formation of polygenic placers. Climatic conditions are of great importance: warm and humid climate in the Paleogene-Neogene changed to colder climates in the late Pliocene (polar type sedimentation; formation of permafrost strata and sea glaciation). These events are responsible for the regularity in placer formation during the Cenozoic in which the early Cenozoic (Eocene-Oligocene-Miocene) and late Cenozoic (late Pliocene-early Pleistocene and late Pleistocene-Holocene) epochs are prominent.

"The slow-spreading Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR), with a length of ~1.26*104km (Bird, 2003), is the longest mid-ocean ridge on this plant. Separated by the large, left-stepping Equatorial fracture zones, it then be divided into two approximately equal-length parts: Northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge (NMAR, ~6292km) with an average spreading rate of 24mm/yr, and Southern Mid-Atlantic Ridge (SMAR, ~6332km) of 33mm/yr (calculated from PB2002 model, Bird, 2003). Previous works (e.g. Fouquet 1997, Hannington et al., 2011) suggest that slow-spreading ridge could support hydrothermal activities and further favorable for the development of extensive seafloor massive sulfide deposits (SMS). Unlike the NMAR for which large part has been explored for SMS (Hannington et al., 2011; Beaulieu et al., 2015), the SMAR is amongst the least hydrothermal explored spreading ridges until now (Haase et al., 2005, Beaulieu et al., 2015), though both of them show significant similarities in terms of spreading rate, ridge morphology, segmentation, etc. (Macdonald et al., 2001, Sandwell et al., 2014, Tucholke et al., 2008).Before this work, several hydrothermal cruises had been to SMAR since British and German programs starting in 2002, some hydrothermal fields, along with systematic geophysical data, were newly investigated, and types of geologic setting that can host hydrothermal activity were firstly identified (e.g. German et al., 2008; Haase et al.,2005; Haase et al.,2009; Devey et al.,2010; Schmidt et al.,2011).."

Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) are proven technologies used across market segments for survey, exploration and environmental monitoring tasks. When coupled with other autonomous platforms or sensor packages AUVs become part of an holistic system approach to exploration and environmental assessment and monitoring. Recent developments have seen AUVs deployed remotely with instantaneous access to data via the cloud. Our goal is to deliver the capabilities of each of these elements and present a cohesive data set with automated processing tools over a cloud based interface. nmanned Technology AUVs The HUGIN AUV System is the most commercially successful AUV ever built. Operated as a single vehicle, or as part of a swarm, HUGIN’s area coverage rate is unrivalled. Equipped with a comprehensive sensor package including Kongsberg’s synthetic aperture sonar, it collects a data set. Some of these data are processed in-mission to enable operators to readily access it when the vehicle is recovered. HUGIN is well suited to mining survey and exploration. Capable of reaching 6000 metre depths and conducting missions greater than 60 hours, HUGIN collects seabed sonar imagery, sub-bottom profiles, laser and camera images plus environmental data, with sensors running concurrently.
