"Zinc, which once enjoyed an unchallenged position in the field of decorative applications, has lost a substantial share of its markets to other materials, particularly plastics. This turn of events has led the zinc industry to explore new market areas, particularly those applications where the engineering properties of zinc can be utilized. This paper gives an overview of the zinc industry's efforts to develop the data base and product development technology which have enabled zinc alloys to emerge as engineering materials. It also indicates those areas in which the research facilities of the zinc industry must be employed to ensure that zinc alloys keep pace with developments in competitive materials and processes.The Materials RevolutionThe development and utilization of new materials and manufacturing processes progressed for centuries by evolution. Recently it erupted into a revolution, which may become as significant as the industrial revolution. The materials revolution has impacted upon many industries, but none has been affected more traumatically than the North American automotive industry. The plight of that industry is of great importance to us because their problems have, to a great degree, become problems to the zinc industry.Much of the impetus behind the automotive trauma came from the battery of motor vehicle regulations promulgated by the United States government in the 1970s. These regulations required that the efficiency of passenger cars, in terms of miles per gallon, be approximately doubled in ten years. In view of the fact that major changes in the automotive world require three years of lead time to implement, the industry was left with only seven years to perform the task. The automotive industry was simultaneously required to make progress in other areas, such as reduced emissions, reduced cost of repairs and increased levels of occupant safety. These added demands not only diverted some of the available resources away from efficiency goals, they often ran in direct conflict. For example, when you are required to provide a front bumper which will absorb the energy of a 5-mile -per-hour barrier collision, you must add both hardware and structure to the vehicle. This adds weight, and increased weight reduces miles per gallon."

"IntroductionIndustrial minerals include a group of more than fifty minerals which are marketed into almost all the sectors of industry; they are the backbone of many manufacturing industries. Table I shows major end-uses for industrial minerals in manufacturing sectors.At Energy, Mines and Resources, industrial minerals are divided in three major categories: (I) agro chemicals and chemicals, (2) construction mineral s, and (3) ceramics and specialty minerals. A listing of the major groups of minerals is shown in Table 2.Agro-chemicals and chemicals are sold on the basis of their chemical content and purity. Construction minerals or structural minerals are distinguished by their performance as low cost and bulky commodities. Ceramics and specialty minerals are performance-specific and are sold for their property on imparting functions on end-products. Industrial minerals have unique characteristics that are useful in many stages of processing; from crushed size to micronized fillers a single mineral ca n serve a broad range of industries because of its intrinsic properties.The Industrial Minerals Industry in CanadaCanada has a large industrial minerals base and is a world leader in the production of some of them. The total value of product ion of these minerals has grown by 115% over the last 10 years despite the misfortune of asbestos.Industrial minerals have shown remarkable growth in the past 20 years at an average annual rate of 9.2%, compared to 7.8% for metallic minerals. In 1986, the value of industrial minerals rose to $4.9 billion, or 14% share of the Canadian mineral production. Figure I shows the value of production of the mineral industry for the period 1966-1986.The leading segment in industrial minerals segment since 1976 is the chemicals and agro-chemicals sector which has an average annual growth rate of 5.75 % in terms of value of production. During the same period, the growth rate for the whole Canadian mining industry was 1.37% per annum. The chemicals and agro-chemical s sector increased its contribution to the total value of production of 2% to 6070 despite the growing share of fuel minerals with 59%."

"The concentration of the fourth production line at Golgohar includes 66% iron with Blaine number of 500 cm2/g. For pelletizing process, the feed iron grade should be greater than 68% with minimum Blaine number of 1800 cm2/g. In this study, the low intensity magnetic Separators, particularly the feed particle size distribution of LIMS were considered. The feed particle size distribution of the separators was optimized to prepare an appropriate concentrate (as mill pelletizing feed). The samples were performed from the LIMS feed and after grinding, four d80 (64, 103, 132, and 15 3µm) were prepared. Then, laboratory magnetic separation experiments were conducted on these samples. The best results obtained using d80 of 132µm. In this particle fraction, the iron grade and Blaine number were 70.3% and 1571 cm2/g, respectively. Therefore, it seems necessary to include a grinding and classification systems before LIMS stage. According to the presence of a high amount of -132 µm particles in the initial feed, an inverse closed circuit was selected. The hydrocyclone was designed in three units as the classification system with 62 cm (diameter), 22 cm (overflow outlet) and 11 cm (apex diameter). By simulation of hydrocyclone with USIMPAC software, the size distribution of underflow was determined. Based on these results, a ball mill with dimensions of 6.7 m (length) and 5 m (diameter) was designed as grinding system.INTRODUCTIONGole-Gohar iron ore concentration plant No.4 (Polycom Plant) in Gole-Gohar Industrial and Mining Complex was installed to increase production capacity as well as treating the circulating load from AG and SAG mills of the main concentration plant of the complex. The load from the mine is crushed using jaw and cone crushers. The crushed ore is then combined with the circulated load and the combination is then grounded using HPGR and ball mills respectively.After comminution, there is a magnetic separation plant which includes a medium intensity magnetic separator (MIMS) followed by three low intensity magnetic separators (LIMS). Final concentrate dewatering is done using three belt filters. After the primary magnetic separation, the ore is upgraded to 62% Fe content and final concentrate which is the product of LIMS has 66% Fe content."

"For recycling LD slag into the steel making process, the phosphorous containing calcium silcate phases have to be removed from iron oxide phases. One possible technical solution could be magnetic separation in a wide range of susceptibilities from ferromagnetic to paramagnetic. To check the feasibility of magnetic separation the distribution of the magnetic susceptibility in size classes as well as the liberation of the phosphorous containing phase were evaluated by a new method combining two dimensional physical property analysis with QEMSCAN analysis. The particle size classes of energy controlled comminution products were subdivided into fractions of defined magnetic susceptibility using a hand magnet of well known field properties (pick up method). On the one hand the susceptibility classes were wet assayed on the other hand analyzed by QEMSCAN followed by data evaluation using iDiscover 5.3.1(FEI), which was adapted to the data structure of two physical properties (size and magnetic mass susceptibility). The results allow the comparison of mass based (3D) cumulative distribution of grades from the wet assays with the area based (2D) distribution from QEMSCAN analysis, in order to control a systematic (size dependent) stereological error for this special type of material. As the physical separation property forms a crucial parameter the results from the liberation analysis by QEMSCAN can be interpreted more profound with respect to an expectable separation result. Once the various mineral compositions of the particles are assigned to the physical properties the Henry Reinhardt chart serves to predict the best possible separation result and thus the feasibility of a separation technique.INTRODUCTIONThe two Austrian steel plants operated by voestalpine AG produce about 650,000 t (voestalpine 2014) of LD slag in the course of steel production from pig iron according to the basic oxygen process blowing oxygen in the converter by an oxygen lance. The process is also known as the Linz Donawitz (LD) steelmaking process. By the addition of lime (CaO), carbon, phosphorus, silica, manganese and sulfur, which are present in the molten pig iron, shall be oxidized and bound in the slag either as oxide or silicate phases, or leave the slag in the gaseous phase (CO). The average chemical composition of the investigated LD slag is given in table 1."

"A multi-seam underground mining operation employing mechanized room-and-pillar methods provides 35 per cent of Smoky River's annual ROM coal production (2 million tonnes) from the Smoky River coal field. Surface mines provide the balance. Tectonic activity, which has resulted in deformed coal seams and a rugged relief to the area, has provided natural boundaries to discrete mining areas. Coal transportation to the central preparation plant incorporates a 3 km long underground conveying system. The company is committed to efficient resource recovery and a safe and healthy working environment. Introduction The Smoky River Coal operations (SRC) are centered in the Smoky River coal field located in west central Alberta, some 360 km west of Edmonton and 20 km from the Town of Grande Cache (Fig. 1). Combined mining operations produce 2 million tonnes per year run-of-mine coal from which 1.65 million tonnes of high quality, low volatile, coking coal are obtained. The underground mining operation, employing mechanized room-and-pillar methods, provides 35 per cent of SRC's annual ROM coal production (2 million tonnes). Surface mines provide the balance. Tectonic activity has resulted in deformed coal seams and a rugged relief in the area. This has provided natural boundaries to discrete mining areas. Background Exploration of the Smoky River coal field took place over four decades commencing in 1926. McIntyre Mines Limited (parent to Smoky River Coal Ltd.}, commenced development of the property in 1968 having secured a long-term contract for the delivery of coal to Japan. Production of underground coal at Smoky River commenced toward the end of 1969 and has been continuous on the property since that time. Originally, two underground mines were opened. Original planning envisaged the use of room-and-pillar techniques to develop blocks of coal for subsequent extraction by longwall retreat mining. Following initial development, two longwall units were established, the first in November 1970 in No. 5 Mine and the second in February 1971 in No. 2 Mine. Difficulties were experienced on both units, and production commitments could not be achieved. The longwalls were discontinued, and mechanized room-and-pillar was subsequently used for all underground mining."

"IntroductionA brief literature search will reveal that the information available concerning rod mills and ball mills is quite extensive. This type of equipment is used to treat every element from antimony to zinc. The size and capacity of individual mills, the number of units employed, and the configuration of the equipment within a concentrator add another dimension to the possible scope of this discussion. It would be impossible to treat this volume of material with any degree of thoroughness.It is the intention in this paper to describe the simplest and generally the most typical circuit wherein a single rod mill and ball mill operate in parallel. Some of the subject matter will not be entirely applicable to every installation. However the principles should be generally relevant to most applications.Typical Circuit DescriptionFigure 1 illustrates the arrangement of the equipment associated with a rod-ball mill circuit.Ore is extracted from a fine ore storage bin (1) the capacity of which is large enough to allow .continuous mill operation independently of the mine and crushing plant production schedules. A number of feeders (2) may be employed to control the flow of ore to one or more feeder conveyor belts (3). In larger tonnage operations several such conveyors are employed at least one of which will be equipped with a variable speed control to allow adjusting of the amount of feed reporting to the rod mill. A rod mill feed conveyor (4) accepts all of the ore from these feeder belts for ultimate transfer to the rod mill. This conveyor is normally equipped with a weightometer (5) to monitor the flow rate of ore to the rod mill and ultimately to allow control of this flow. Typically these conveyor belts would be equipped with feed deficiency switches which would give a remote alarm of the fact that no ore is present on the conveyor. The conveyor belts are protected by underspeed monitors which will provide a remote alarm and automatic shutdown of the conveyor in the C'.'~nt that belt slippage occurs. Finally the belts are protected by monitors which will alarm and shut down a belt if it is not running straight in the idlers."

"The Gregg River project is located 40 kilometres southwest of Hinton, Alberta, adjacent to and east of Jasper National Park. This metallurgical coal mine has been developed as a joint venture between Gregg River Coal Ltd. (a subsidiary company of Mana/ta Coal Ltd.) and seven Japanese companies. This 200-million dollar project consists of a conventional truckshovel open-pit operation and a coal preparation plant rated at 2.14 million tonnes of clean coal per year. Mining operations started in October 1982 with plant start-up following in April 1983. Introduction This paper is an overview and update of the Gregg River project, a metallurgical coal mine being developed as a joint venture between Gregg River Coal Ltd. (a subsidiary of Manalta Coal Ltd.) and seven Japanese companies. The Gregg River Coal leases cover 3440 hectares and are located 40 kilometres south of Hinton, Alberta, adjacent to and north of Cardinal River Coal Mine (Fig. 1). This 200-million dollar project consists of a conventional truck-shovel operation and a coal preparation plant rated at 2.14 million tonnes of clean coal per year. A total of 31.5 million tonnes of clean metallurgical coal will be sold to the Japanese over a fifteen-year term. At present, mining operations are ahead of schedule and the plant started up on schedule in April 1983. Access and Climate An all-weather road, Highway 40, connects the minesite with Hinton (the nearest commercial centre) and a Canadian National Railway (C.N.R.) spur line connects the minesite with the C.N.R. main line in Edson. Hinton is accessible by road chartered airline and rail. ' ~h~ rug~ed and varied topography in the area creates large vanations m temperature and precipitation over short distances. The region is characterized by precipitation throughout the year long cold winters and short cool summers. The mean temperatur~ of the area range from a low of -14°C in January, the coldest month, to a high of 12°C in July, the warmest month. Long-term precipitation data indicates a mean yearly precipitation of 870 mm of which 620Jo occurs during the summer months."

"Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Ltd. (controlled by Noranda Mines Limited) operates two lead-zinccopper- silver mines approximately 20 miles inland from Bathurst, N.B. The principal No. 12 orebody is mined by underground methods; the second, the No. 6 orebody (6 miles away), is recovered by open-pit mining. No. 12 underground operations ar•e in two parallel massive sulphide orebodies about 400 ft apart, dipping at 75 to 80 degrees and plunging almost vertically. The initial mining phase involved longhole open stoping from the 1550 level to the crown pillar, with main levels at 150-ft intervals and sub-levels between at 75 ft. Stope dimensions average 120 ft long, 100 ft wide and 400 ft high, with alternate rib pillars as well as sill and crown pillars. Initially, ore was transferred through scram drifts below each stope by means of 125-hp electric slushers and 72-in. folding scrapers, being delivered to gravity ore-pass collection •systems feeding a primary jaw crusher below. Later, track and trackless drawpoints were utilized below most longhole open stopes and pillars. Rib pillars were recovered by longhole methods, with large blasts into a central slot and undercut, after adjacent stopes had been filled. Waste-rock stripping from No. 6 open pit has been supplied to No. 12 stopes as backfill, by means of gravityfill raises.In 1968, the decision was made to mine the remaining ore zones by mechanized cut-and-fill methods, utilizing Load-Haul-Dump equipment. Currently, approximately 60 per cent of No. 12 mine production comes from mechanized cut-and-fill mining. As before, backfill is supplied from No. 6 open pit stripping waste rock, which has been crushed to minus 6 in. The ultimate objective is to supply virtually all production requirements by mechanized cut-and-fill techniques. The No. 6 open pit, which commenced production in 1966, covers an area of 1,500 by 1,200 ft, equivalent to 41 acres approximately. Ramp roads are graded at 8.5 per cent. Each mining bench is 36 ft high and the ultimate pit will consist of 14 benches for a final pit depth of 504 ft. Present depth is 180 ft."

"Huge amounts of air pollution scrubber sludge have been generated during ferromanganese production using blast furnace. These residues have been historically deposited in ponds near steel making plants. They are very rich in zinc, manganese and lead (5 to 40 %) and also contain aluminum and iron. Considering the market value of these metals, brownfield sites can now be used as secondary resources. These ponds also have to be cleaned up to meet the environmental regulations.We have developed a hydrometallurgical process to recover Zn, Mn and Pb in order to produce valuable compounds of Mn and Zn and recover the final Pb residue by pyrometallurgy. The Zn and Mn compounds need to be pure enough to be economically valuable. Batch laboratory tests were carried out to determine suitable selective leaching conditions. The investigated operating conditions were acid concentration, pulp density and temperature. Optimal conditions to maximize zinc extraction (100 %) and manganese extraction (95.9 %) were found using sulfuric acid and sodium metabisulfide. The final residue contained 14.8 to 23.8 % of Pb. Then, Zn was recovered in the form of ZnO or ZnS by precipitation and Zn metal by electrowinning, while Mn was recovered as MnCO3 with a fairly acceptable concentration of impurities.INTRODUCTIONFerromanganese has been produced by pyrometallurgy in much of Western Europe for centuries. Use of wet scrubber to remove pollutant and dust particles from gas stream was common for most of these operations. Those residues contain high concentration of Zn, Mn and Pb. They have been left to decant in settling ponds installed close to the steel production plants. They now constitute heavily contaminated artificial soils. Those sludges are so contaminated with Zn, Mn and Pb that they can be used for metal production. Currently, no method is available to decontaminate these residues and recover Zn, Mn and Pb. Therefore, an approach considering these brownfield sites as secondary resource is in development. Doing so would achieve two goals, decontaminate the site and produce metals.. (Huot, Faure, Biache, Lorgeoux, Simonnot, & Morel, 2014a; Huot, Simonnot, Marion, Yvon, De Donato, & Morel, 2012; Huot, Simonnot, Watteau, Marion, Yvon, De Donato, & Morel, 2014b)."

"The Donalda gold deposit is located in the southern part of the Noranda camp, approximately 2 /em east of the Horne deposit. Combined past production and current reserves total over 1.5 Mt grading 6.9 grams of gold per tonne.The deposit consists of two main veins which are both narrow but persistent structures. The No 1 Vein, hosting about 80% of the gold ore, consists of an EW-striking banded quartz vein dipping on average 25° to the south. Although variable in thickness, it averages lessthan1 metre. TheNo2 Vein, located 300 m below the No 1 Vein, is similar to it except that it dips 50° south. Gold occurs mostly as fine native gold disseminated in quartz, with 2-3% pyrite and trace amounts of various sulphides and tellurides. The wall rocks are only weakly altered and mineralized with pyrite, hematite and sericite.Structurally, the Donalda deposit is centered on the Horne Creek fault (HCF) where the HCF is intersected by the ENE-trending DonaldaandCentralfaults.NorthoftheHCF,theNo1Veinishosted by the Quemont Rhyolite, whereas south of the HCF the vein is hosted by magnetic basalts and diorites of the Wilco Andesite Formation. The No 1 Vein extends across the HCF with only minor displacement, whereas the No 2 Vein has not yet been traced south of the HCF.A preliminary structural analysis of the mine shows that the HCF, which strikes 275° and dips 70° north in the mine area, has a reverse movement a lid that the flat dipping No 1 Vein is a tension vein. Both probably developed in response to the same stress conditions. Although the absolute age of the Donalda veins is not known, structural relationships indicate that they formed during the latest movements of the HCF, but prior to the intrusion of the Proterozoic D' Eldona Diabase. The occurrence along the HCF of gold-rich synvolcanic massive sulphides and much younger vein-type gold deposits (such as Donalda) indicates that the HCF was a very long-lived, deep-seated (?)structure which has controlled the circulation of gold-rich fluids over a long period of time."

"Friction stir welding (FSW) process in lap configuration for dissimilar materials has been developed and tested for steel to aluminum joining. A novel cylindrical tool was designed for improved material flow. The joining of steel to high strength 5xxx and 6xxx aluminum was carried out by FSW technique using optimized process parameters. The microstructure, micro-hardness, joint strength and corrosion properties at the weld interface have been investigated. Optical and scanning electron microscopy reveled a well layered structure at the interface and lap shear tests of the welds showed excellent fracture resistance. Neutral salt spray tests for up to 500 hours (ASTM B117) were carried out on the bare steel to aluminum FSW joints, which did not show neither evidence of corrosion at the weld interface, nor any degradation of the weld strength. The FSW lap configuration was applied to prototype commercial vehicle structural component whereby a steel stiffener insert was friction stir welded to high strength 6xxx aluminum alloy. The interface microstructure showed layered root without any steel shattering in aluminum side. A finite element study was carried out to quantify the benefits where it was found that the stiffness increases by 76% under bending loads and 36% in torsion loads.INTRODUCTION Energy preservation and environmental issues, namely carbon footprint and legislation around emission in transportation industries has led to a growing need to use of lightweight materials such as aluminum and magnesium alloys along with various grades of steel in structural application, while still maintaining their strength and crashworthiness. Assembling dissimilar materials within integrated structure is thus a stringent requirement related to optimum performance. In order to achieve an efficient technology of joining dissimilar materials such as aluminum to steel, it remains difficult to select an effective welding process for a given joint configuration. The use of aluminum in transportation industries for structural component is not exclusive in a design and is almost always used along with various steel grades for a mixed materials solution, thus dissimilar aluminum/steel lap joining is of great interest since this is widely used in the assembly of parts (e.g. pillar, frame rails, chassis, body in white (BIW), CAB, etc.)."

"The Mount Milligan mine, located in central British Columbia, began operation in September 2013 with a design nameplate capacity of 62,500 dry metric tonnes per day, using a conventional SABC grinding circuit followed by bulk sulphide flotation. Over the last few years, many changes have been implemented in order to debottleneck and optimize the comminution circuit to meet and exceed the nameplate design capacity as well as improve the metal recovery of the flotation circuit. This paper discusses changes, grouped into mechanical modifications, projects, and operational changes. The implementation of these changes as well as ongoing challenges and potential solutions will also be discussed.INTRODUCTION The Mount Milligan mine began production in the fall of 2013. It is a conventional truck-shovel open pit gold and copper mine and concentrator with a 62,500 tpd design capacity copper-gold flotation processing plant. The average head grades for the life of mine are 0.18% Cu and 0.39 g/t Au. At full capacity, the mine produces an average 400 dry tonnes per day of copper-gold concentrate containing approximately 21.5% Cu and 50-60 g/t Au. Current mine life is 21 years. This paper will discuss a selection of the operational, engineering, and administrative changes that have been made at the site since the publication of An Update on Reaching Nameplate Throughput and Continuous Improvement at Mount Milligan (Yue, 2017). PLANT FLOWSHEET CONFIGURATION Run-of-mine ore is crushed through a 60-110 gyratory crusher to a top size of seven inches. Up to 100% of the gyratory crusher product is diverted to the secondary crushing circuit by a moveable gate. The material diverted to the secondary crushing circuit is fed to a vibrating double-deck screen. The screen oversize is placed on a surge pile and reclaimed by four vibrating feeders to feed two 1250 kW standard head cone crushers in open circuit. The screen undersize is combined with the crusher discharge and returns to the conveyor feeding the coarse ore stockpile along with primary crusher product that by-passes the diverter gate."

"Oleic acid flotation of Mount Wright thickener underflow tailing material has been shown to be capable of increasing plant recovery by 3%. High levels of oleic acid addition (1.5 kg/t) are required, which limit the economic practicality of the system at this time. Nevertheless, from a technical viewpoint, the process is stable with respect to extreme fluctuations in oleic acid requirements, pulp pH and pulp temperature. Methods to reduce the average consumption of oleic acid need to be found. One technique that merits further testwork uses the ""piggy-back"" principle to float hematite fines with coarsegrained hematite particles.IntroductionWith most large-scale iron mining operations treating specular hematite ores, flotation is not often conside red a necessary processing step. The bulk of the iron minerals can be concentrated by gravity techniques and the generation of fines can be minimized because of the course- grained nature of the mineralization. Nevertheless, production of some fine material is unavoidable, and recovery of iron from this fraction by spirals is poor (10-30%).When the proportion of the iron in these fines becomes excessive, alternative methods to conventional spirals are considered(11), Many of the techniques that have been developed suffer from either poor recovery (e.g. the Reichert cones at 36010 recovery)(11) or low throughput rates (e.g. wet highintensity magnetic separation)(12), Flotation is often passed over because of excessive reagent costs, pollution problems and/or balling difficulties from the reagents used.However, of all the processes available, flotation can yield high recoveries (60-90%) at reasonable throughput rates with excellent process control features (reagent addition and/or cell level). The key parameter is reagent cost.This paper describes testwork on the use of oleic acid to float hematite from the fine fractions of the Mount Wright concentrator tailing. The concentrate product from this plant is directly shipped, so no balling problems exist. As well, oleic acid may be considered a lesser pollution hazard than many of the cationic collectors used in other iron ore flotation systems. A reduction in fine hematite slimes discharged as tailing into lakes may also reduce environmental damage."

IN June, 1940, a .Longyear 3420 blast-hole drill rig was purchased by the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company for the purpose of experimental blast-hole drilling. The early work showed that the diamond drill could compete successfully with the Leyners then in use and by January 1st, 1941, the diamond drills were placed on contract. They may be considered to have gone into production at that date. Prior to the introduction of the diamond drill, our bench drilling was clone with Ingersoll-Rand S-70 and S-83 Leyner drills. Holes up to 40 feet were drilled, using coupled 1 1/4-inch round steel. Bits with a gauge of 3 inches were used in starting these holes, with a drop of 1/8-inch gauge for each 2-foot run. The holes normally ended with 1 1/2 or 1 5/8-inch gauge, though bits down to 1 1/8 inches were available for holes longer than normal or for holes drilled in abnormally abrasive ground. This method of drilling was very satisfactory and was a distinct improvement on the three-bench method of drilling used previously (1). During 1937 and 1938, when experienced miners were available, Leyner long-hole drilling was carried on with great efficiency. However, in 1939 and 1940, labour turnover in-creased and experienced long-hole drillers became scarcer. This resulted in a marked decline in the efficiency of the drilling operations, with increased costs and less tonnage drilled per shift. EXPERIMENTAL WORK The initial diamond drilling test work was carried on with a Longyear 3420 air-driven blast-hole drill rig, drilling a 1 3/16-inch hole. Tests indicated that diamond drilling could be successfully adapted to local conditions and that overall costs compared favourably with costs obtained with the Leyner long-hole method. Leyner long holes on stope benches usually bottomed at a larger diameter than the 1 3/16 -inch diamond-drill holes. More powder could therefore be introduced into the Leyner holes than could be placed in the diamond-drill holes. To achieve the same fragmentation, additional footage was required when diamond drilling. Diamond-drill holes of larger diameter were indicated.

"Conventional electrowinning (EW) of nickel from sulfate electrolytes is complicated by several factors including the requirement for a diaphragm cell to separate the anolyte and catholyte and the need to minimize nickel mist emissions. Developed and commercialized by emewCorporation, this novel process electrowins high purity nickel cathode (99.5%) from copper refinery bleed streams using the proprietary emew vortex EW technology. The emew nickel process incorporates high flow rate in an enclosed cylindrical EW cell operating at high current densities that overcomes the challenges of conventional nickel EW and completely eliminates the risk of nickel mist emissions. The tubular cathodes are easily harvested and mitigate the effect of plating stresses inherent in nickel EW. The present paper describes the emew nickel process and its most recent application to copper refinery bleed streams at full-scale.INTRODUCTION To meet the stringent demand of customers, nickel producers are giving prime importance to production of high purity nickel cathodes. The major challenge for refineries is to improve cathode quality and appearance despite fluctuating electrolyte impurity levels. The basis of achieving good quality cathode includes the control of electrolyte impurities and consistency of specific process conditions. The commercial operation of emew nickel technology has been successfully implemented and has demonstrated the ability to produce high quality nickel cathode from refinery bleeds. This paper emphasizes the importance of upstream impurity removal to achieve the required nickel emew feed composition by evaluating the benefits of using selective precipitation as a purification scheme with the aim of improving the overall nickel recovery while ensuring suitable nickel concentration in the advanced electrolyte is achieved. Nickel electrowinning is similar to other electrowinning processes that employ insoluble metal anodes & cathodes. It requires the passage of direct current between two electrodes that are immersed in a conductive, aqueous solution of nickel salts. For the recovery of nickel from solution, the most common methods are electrowinning and hydrogen reduction. Electrowinning usually occurs from sulfate, chloride or mixed sulfate/chloride electrolytes. The Águas Claras and Pico mines are two world-class, iron-ore mines hosted within Lower- Proterozoic banded iron-formations (locally known as itabirites) of the Minas Supergroup located in the Quadrilátero Ferrífero District, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The Águas Claras orebody consists of a 2,500 m long roughly tabular-shaped lens hosted within the dolomitic itabirite of the Cauê Formation. Dolomitic itabirite is the protore of the soft high-grade iron ore, which is the main ore type of the Águas Claras orebody, and represents more than 85% of the 284 Mt mined since 1973. Hematite is the main constituent of the iron ores. It occurs as martite, granular hematite and, locally, as specularite. Magnetite appears subordinately as relicts within martite and hematite crystals. Gangue minerals are very rare. These consist of dolomite, chlorite, talc and apatite and are especially common close to the contact with the protore. This virtual absence of gangue minerals is reflected in the chemistry of ores which are characterized by very high Fe contents (an average of 68.2% Fe). The Pico orebody is a continuous ~3,000 m long body of lenticular shape hosted within quartz itabirite, which is the protore of the soft high- and low-grade ores at the Pico mine. The soft high-grade ores, together with the low-grade ores, called iron-rich itabirite, are the main types of ores at the Pico mine, respectively representing approximately 51 % and 29 % of the reserves within the pit. The iron oxide mineralogy is the same as that of the Águas Claras mine, but in different proportions. Gangue minerals are very rare in the high-grade ores, but are slightly more common in the iron-rich itabirite. Quartz is the dominant gangue mineral, and is found with minor quantities of chlorite. The chemistry of the high-grade ores is characterized by high Fe contents (an average of 67.0 %) and low P, Al2O3, and SiO2 which are concentrated in the fines. Iron rich itabirites average 58.6% Fe and 13.5% SiO2.

"Sample drops were evaporated on Lexan disks on which fission tracks were etched and counted after neutron irradiation. [U] = 0.01 ppb could be measured. This method is rapid, cheap, simple and accurate when sufficient control and checking is possible, but several types of error were encountered in its use, the natures and sources of which were investigated but not always determined. The most troublesome were ""annealing"" processes which sometimes altered the fission tracks so that they were not fully revealed, or acquired varying appearances, after etching. Several different annealing processes seemed to exist and seemed to be produced by alteration of the Lexan surface by dissolved components in the solutions and, perhaps, by radiation and local heating during neutron irradiation. The appearances of the etched tracks varied with the natures of the droplet solutions even when annealing appeared to be absent, and for this reason, standards are best prepared by additions of known amounts of U to sample solutions. Contamination of sample droplets by U-containing dust from the air is best avoided by preparing the disks away from areas where other U-analysis is being carried out.IntroductionFission tracks are regions of radiation dam age produced in solids by the fission of atoms such as 235U. They can be enlarged to sizes visible through optical microscopes by etching surfaces through which they pass with solvents in which the solids are slightly soluble. A sample to be analyzed for U may be placed against a film of a solid of negligible uranium concentration (the track detector) and irradiated with thermal neutrons in a nuclear reactor to fission 235U. The track detector is then etched and the number of tracks per unit area, ?, which is proportional to the uranium concentration of the sample, c, and the neutron do se, n, is found by counting through a microscope. Uranium in solutions ha s been measured by evaporating drops on track detectors, irradiating, etching and determining the number of tracks per drop, T(2,3,4,5). "Tensile tests and scanning electron microscopy-electron backscattered diffraction (SEM-EBSD) analysis were performed in an Al-Mg-Si alloy to clarify the effect of annealing and cold-rolling reduction on the texture formation. The hot-rolled specimens were cold-rolled with the reduction of 58-75%(CR1), followed by annealing at 773 K for 5 min(IA). The secondary cold-rolling(CR2)for the IA specimens with the reduction of 33–66%, followed by the solution heat treatment(ST), were performed. Focusing on the CR1 and CR2 specimens, the average r-values increased with higher primary and lower secondary cold-rolling reduction, respectively. This was considered to be due to the increase of r-values measured in the direction of 45 degree with respect to rolling direction, caused by the formation of the ß-fiber components (Brass {011}<211>, Copper {112}<111> and S {123}<634>) with high density. Based on the texture analysis of annealed specimens it was suggested that the high density of the ß-fiber components after IA and the small amount of stored strain energy of CR2 introduced by the lower cold-rolling reduction remained the ?-fiber components even after solution treatment.INTRODUCTION Al-Mg-Si alloys have been applied to automobile body applications, due to their excellent paint-bake hardening (age-hardening) and corrosion resistance compared to other aluminum alloy. On the other hand, the mechanical properties and deep drawability of Al-Mg-Si alloys are inferior to those of steels. Thus, it is important to improve the mechanical properties and deep drawability in order to expand the application components. One of the best methods to improve the deep drawability is to increase the Lankford coefficient (r-value). Previous studies reported that the increase of the average r-value ( ) improves the deep drawability. The relationship between the r-value and texture of the alloy is also well known. "The nature and distribution of the inorganic components and the concentration of certain environmentally sensitive elements, such as, As, Sb, B, Hr, Cd, CI, F, Mo, Pb, S, and Se, or elements detrimental to the utilization by industry such as B, Na, P and S are very important in determining coal quality. The concentration of elements in coal is controlled by the following factors: (1) frequency of occurrence of partings; (2) nature and habit of occurrence of minerals in coal; (3) environment of coal deposition; (4)rank; (5) geological setting; and (6) weathering.Selective mining of coal can reduce the input of undesirable elements such as As and S by eliminating the part of the seam which is enriched in these elements. IntroductionCoal is a sedimentary rock of plant origin and consists of two components: an inorganic component (minerals) which is formed by influx of clastic sediments into the coal-forming environment and also by activities of groundwater, and an organic component (macerals) which is formed from plant debris deposited in the original coal-forming environment. However, coal is a generic term with a broad range of utilization characteristics. A coal that is attractive for use in one market - such as generation of electricity (combustion) - may not necessarily be acceptable for use in another, such as for production of coke (Davis, 1978).The elements in coal are associated with both macerals and minerals. The elements associated with coal macerals, such as C, H and N are termed elements with organic affInities. The concentration of elements with organic affmities (including B, Br, CI, F, I, S, and Mg) often decrease with increasing ash content of coal (Nicholls, 1968; and Finkehnan,1982). FIgure 1 shows such a trend for chlorine. Some of these elements may also be incorporated in coal maceral as very fine mineral grains (Finkelman, 1982). The elements with organic affmities are often volatilized during combustion and carbonization of coal and emitted in the vapour phase. Emission of some of these elements (C, 0, Br, N and S) is of major environmental concern (Lim, 1979)."

"Indicator kriging is one of the non-parametric geostatistical techniques, ideal for estimating the reserves of irregular mineralizations (e.g. gold, uranium, platinum, diamonds, etc.). Such mineralizations are characterized by variograms which are very sensitive to extreme values (outliers) and very difficult to model.The classical approach to this problem in the industry is to trim off these high grades using arbitrary empirical upper limits established either from practice or subjectively. Contrary to this simplistic approach, indicator kriging discretizes the histogram of the grades (usually log normal) in several classes and carries out interpolation separately for each class. This paper gives an overview of the differences between ordinary and indicator kriging along with the steps required to carry out indicator kriging. The paper concludes with a case study involving a gold deposit estimation.IntroductionParametric geostatistics (ordinary kriging) has given us satisfactory results over the years in estimating the reserves of well behaved deposits with coefficients of variation close to 1 (e.g. sedimentary and porphyry type deposits). However, numerous problems have been encountered in estimating irregular mineralizations (e.g. small vein deposits of precious metals) with high coefficients of variation in the range of 2 to 5. Such deposits are characterized by a very small proportion of extreme values (outliers) which create distortions on the variograms (pure nugget effect) and render them useless(1,2).The solution often followed by the mining industry today is to trim off these values based on empirical limits. These limits are derived either by comparison with production results (or bulk samples) or by geological interpretations. Needless to say that such manipulations can lead to serious errors in estimating ore reserves (usually underestimation of total metal quantity), especially when production results or bulk samples are absent.On the other hand, the solution followed by the geostatisticians in the past was to smooth out the data using transforms (e.g. normal-score or natural logarithms). Such transforms are nonlinear and they required non-linear estimation techniques such as disjunctive kriging (DK) or multivariate gaussian kriging (MG) which require normal related hypotheses, not necessarily true in geology.Nonparametric geostatistics (indicator and probability kriging) have been -developed in order to handle these problems related to highly skewed distributions."
