Corrosion of refractory linings by molten metals is controlled by interactions between penetration and chemical reaction. Corrosion of aluminosilicates by molten aluminium is no exception. The early stage of corrosion can be described as a particular case of reactive wetting over a porous medium. Although the reactivity between aluminium and silica is great, which should improve wetting and penetration, the presence of air and the formation of a protective oxide layer disfavours initial penetration. This paper presents the results of an exploratory study on the effect of some parameters on the initial stage of aluminium penetration. Penetration kinetics and metal intrusion tests have been performed on alumina and silica powders with pure aluminium and Al¬5%Mg. Capillary models are used as tools of interpretation. Penetration kinetics tests had a poor reproducibility and the kinetics itself can not be explained very well by the capillary-tube-bundle model. On the other hand, a capillary model initially developed for ice intrusion into freezing soils produced predictions in reasonably good agreement with intrusion pressure measurements. The effect of particle size and alloy composition can be predicted using this model. However, the effects of temperature and powder chemistry need additional interpretations to be rationalised. An unusual resistance to penetration of silica powder by molten aluminium have been observed in a series of experiments. This led the authors to the strange conclusion that oxygen should be seen as an excellent non-wetting agent and that there might be ways to use it in industrial applications.

Vanadium is concentrated in the fly ash which is produced as a solid waste from oil sands operations in northern Alberta. Although a process flowsheet using sodium chloride as a roasting reagent has been developed at the University of Alberta, recent studies examine the p otential o f p otassium o r c alcium s alts a s alternative reagents for roasting Suncor fly ash to recover vanadium. Suncor fly ash was roasted with CaO, Ca(OH)2, CaCO3, CaSO4.2H2O and KC1 at 750, 850 and 950°C. Water leach extractions for the calcium compounds were low (<45%); leaching with 100 g/L Na2CO3 gave maximum extractions of 56 to 69% at 950°C. Ash roasted with KCI behaved similarly to ash roasted with NaCl. These tests indicate that similar roasting conditions (25 to 30% KCI, 850°C, and 2 to 4h) could be used to achieve similar water leach extractions (75 to 85%). However, the lower solubility of KVO3 in solution, compared to NaVO3, would make the use of KCI instead of NaCl less attractive from a process and economic standpoint. Mineralogically, leucite (KAlSi3O8) was the predominant phase in ash roasted with KCl while, in crystalline samples of ash roasted with calcium compounds, anorthite (CaAl2Si2O8) and pseudobrookite (Fe2TiO5) were identified. Ash roasted below 950°C with the calcium compounds remained poorly crystalline.

"Smelter Feed Preparation Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited, Sudbury Operations, operate 4 mills and a smelter to produce Bessemer Ni-Cu matte for refining in Norway. Approximately 1400 tons of Ni-Cu concentrate are produced daily which are dried from a filter cake containing 14% moisture to 7.5% moisture pellets. Concentrate drying is done by 4 rotary dryers as shown in the 'Dryer Performance Data' at four separate locations. The dryers all form part of the feed preparation stage prior to sintering.The rate at which concentrate can be produced through the Sinter Plant largely depends on the quality of the dried product which makes up the feed. A feed consisting of mostly hardened pellets will sinter much faster than a feed which consists of broken pellets and dust. Dryer products require:1. Good green strength to survive shipment and handling.2. Correct moisture content.3. Sizing within a range ideally from 1/4"" to 10 mesh in diameter.Dryer performance data is shown in Table 1. Capital costs between the two types of dryers are comparable with the Roto-Louvre producing generally a larger better-formed pellet. Dryer feeds differ in that at both Hardy and Fecunis, Ni-Cu concentrate filter cake is the only feed while at the Falconbridge slurry plant the dryer feed can consist of up to 10% by weight of smelter flue dust resulting in a combined concentrate-dust pellet for feeding to the Sinter Plant. To the Falconbridge Sinter Plant dryer, dust and limestone are added for the smelting process in addition to Ni-Cu concentrate."

This survey continues the long tradition of providing a snapshot of operating data from industrial electrorefineries. It is a supplement to previous surveys that were performed in 1987, 1991, 1995, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2007, 2010, 2013 and 2016. Analyses of current data and historical trends are presented. Examples of innovations to reduce costs, improve productivity, and improve quality are provided. In general, refineries continue to increase productivity while treating anodes with more impurities. INTRODUCTION This manuscript analyzes global survey data provided by operating copper electrorefineries. This paper continues a series of surveys of copper refining tankhouses that started in 1987 (Schloen, 1987, 1991; Schloen & Davemport, 1995; Davenport et al., 1999; Robinson et al., 2003; Moats et al., 2007, 2013, 2016). In this installment, data collected from 2015 and 2018 will be presented and analyzed. The 2015 survey data were presented at Copper 2016 in Kobe, Japan. This survey will continue the analysis of previous data to illustrate long term trends in copper electrorefining, which were originally presented at the Davenport Symposium in October, 2014 (Moats, Robinson, & Wang, 2014). Refineries who supplied surveys are listed in Table 1. Cathode production data from 2015 and 2017/18 (from surveys presented in 2016 and 2019) are provided to indicate which plants provided surveys and when. This manuscript presents operating data for ~6.5 million tonnes of copper production, which represents 30–35% of the world’s copper electrorefining production. "Abstract - The Eel River area in the southwestern Miramichi terrane of New Brunswick contains a complete calc-alkaline suite of volcanic rocks that are interlayered with intervals of sedimentary and polylithic fragmental rocks, and are overlain by a thick sedimentary sequence. This package, collectively referred to as the Meductic Group, was deposited in a submerged volcanic arc setting interpreted to be part of the Popelogan arc. Rifting of this arc led to the development of the Tetagouche-Exploits back-arc basin, and formation of volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits in bimodal volcanic rocks of the Bathurst Mining Camp in the northeastern Miramichi Terrane. Unlike the Bathurst Mining Camp, volcanic rocks in the southeastern Miramichi Highlands form a continuous calc-alkaline suite characterized by increasing Zr/TiO2 with increasing SiO2, in part resulting from progressive coupled assimilation and fractional crystallization of nested magma systems. Slumping of semi-consolidated volcanic and sedimentary rocks in topographically unstable areas resulted in numerous slumps and debris flows that are preserved throughout the Eel River area. In the early 1990s, the discovery of a large sulfide clast in a road cut along the Benton road sparked interest in the volcanogenic massive sulfide potential of the Eel River area. Subsequent drilling intersected smaller fragments, one clast of which graded 16.7% Zn, 5.6% Pb, 90 ppm Ag, and 220 ppb Au. The intersection of thin lenses of stratiform sulfides in another drillhole indicates favorable conditions for the preservation of massive sulfides. Their subsequent incorporation into synvolcanic debris flows resulted in the transport and deposition of sulfide clasts from hydrothermal vents to more distal locations. Similar to the Buchans deposits of Newfoundland, tracing these debris flows back to their source would be beneficial from an exploration perspective. Approximately 15 km to the southwest of the Eel River area, gold-bearing base metal sulfide clasts (11.1% Zn, 6.13% Pb, 0.19% Cu, 108 ppm Ag, and 1100 ppb Au) occur within intermediate-composition volcanic rocks at Monument Brook in eastern Maine. Sommaire - Le secteur d’Eel River dans le sud-ouest de la terrane de Miramichi au Nouveau Brunswick contient une séquence complète de roches volcaniques calco-alcalines interstratifiées avec des roches sédimentaires et fragmentaires polylithologiques, sous une épaisse couverture sédimentaire. Cet assemblage constitue le Groupe de Meductic, et a été déposé dans un environnement d’arc insulaire interprété comme une partie de l’arc de Popelogan. Le rifting de cet arc à mené au développement du bassin d’arrière-arc de Tetagouche-Exploits, et à la formation de gisements de sulfures massifs volcanogènes dans les roches volcaniques bimodales du Camp Minier de Bathurst dans le nord-est de la terrane de Miramichi. Contrairement au Camp Minier de Bathurst, les roches volcaniques des hautes terres du sud-est de Miramichi constituent une suite calco-alcaline continue caractérisée par un accroissement du rapport Zr/TiO2 à des valeurs croissantes de SiO2, résultant en partie de l’assimilation progressive et de la cristallisation fractionnée de systèmes magmatiques superposés. L’effondrement de roches volcaniques et sédimentaires semi-consolidées dans des secteurs topographiquement instables est à l’origine des nombreux slumps et coulées de débris qui sont préservés dans le secteur d’Eel River. Au début des années 1990, la découverte d’un large claste de sulfures le long de la route Benton provoqué un intérêt pour le potentiel en gisements de sulfures massifs volcanogènes dans les secteur d’Eel River. Des forages ont par la suite recoupé des fragments plus petits, dont un claste qui a retourné des teneurs de 16.7% Zn, 5.6% Pb, 90 ppm Ag et 220 ppb Au. Le recoupement de minces lentilles de sulfures stratiformes dans un autre forage indique des conditions propices à la préservation des sulfures massifs."

Abstract-Most large skarn deposits are zoned in both space and time relative to associated intrusions. Zonation occurs on scales from kilometers to micrometers, and reflects infiltrative fluid flow, wallrock reaction, temperature variations, and fluid mixing. The most spectacular examples of skarn zonation usually occur at the skarn-marble contact, where transitions between monomineralic bands can be knife sharp. Other small-scale examples occur in zoned veins and individual mineral crystals. Although, visually striking and scientifically interesting, in mineral exploration these small-scale variations are less useful than deposit- or district-scale zonation. In most skarn systems there is a general zonation pattern of proximal garnet, distal pyroxene, and vesuvianite (or a pyroxenoid such as wollastonite, bustamite, or rhodonite) at the marble front. As well, individual skarn minerals may display systematic color or compositional variations within the larger zonation pattern. Such patterns are reviewed for 14 well-studied examples of Cu, W, Sn, Au, and Zn-Pb skarns. In addition, many deposits have endoskarn or other alteration of the associated intrusion, and recrystallization or other subtle changes have occurred in the surrounding wallrocks. Copper skarns, such as Mines Gaspé in Quebec and Big Gossan in Irian Jaya, have high ratios of garnet:pyroxene and are zoned outward from the intrusion, to garnet, to pyroxene, to massive-sulfide replacement and vein deposits. Garnets in Cu skarn are Fe-rich and change from dark red-brown near the intrusive contact to paler brown, green, or yellow in distal locations. Pyroxenes in Cu skarns are pale and diopsidic near the intrusion, and become darker and more Fe- and Mn-rich away from the intrusion. Tungsten skarns, such as Salau and Costabonne in France and Pine Creek and Garnet Dike in California, have intermediate ratios of garnet:pyroxene, are more extensive vertically and along strike than perpendicular to the intrusive contact, and have zonation patterns commonly complicated by overprinting of metamorphic lithologies. In W skarns, garnet is commonly subcalcic and the pyroxene is Fe-rich, reflecting particularly reducing wallrocks or great depth of formation. Tin skarns, such as Dachang in China and Moina in Australia, also can have subcalcic garnet and Fe-rich pyroxene, but this reduced mineral assemblage typically is due to an association with reduced S-type granites. Tin skarns differ from most other skarn types in having a late greisen stage that may replace earlier Sn-bearing calc-silicate minerals, thus liberating Sn to form cassiterite. Many high-grade Au skarns, such as Hedley in British Columbia and Fortitude in Nevada, have low ratios of garnet:pyroxene and are associated both with reduced plutons and reduced wallrocks. Goldrich zones occur in Fe-rich, pyroxene-dominant, distal skarn. Zn-Pb skarns, such as the Yeonhwa- Ulchin district in Korea and Groundhog in New Mexico, have low ratios of garnet:pyroxene and generally form distal to associated intrusions. These skarns also are zoned from proximal garnet to distal pyroxene and pyroxenoid (bustamite-rhodonite), with significant zones of massive sulfides within and beyond skarn. Manganese enrichment of most mineral phases, particularly pyroxene, is characteristic of distal zones. Fundamental controls on skarn zonation include temperature, depth of formation, composition and oxidation state of associated plutons and wallrocks, and tectonic setting. Most W skarns form at relatively great depth, 5 km to 20 km, with extensive high-temperature metamorphic and metasomatic mineral assemblages. In contrast, most other skarn types are relatively shallow, <10 km and mostly <5 km, with limited, lower temperature metamorphic aureoles. "Cobalt based super alloy stellite 6 was weld cladded on AISI 304 L stainless steel using SMAW process in order to improve the wear resistance for tyre crusher blades. Microstructure characterization and micro hardness testing was performed on stellite 6 cladding. The suitable parameters viz. 80 Amp current with arc weaving technique was selected by performing bead on plate experiment were further used for depositing multipass multilayer cladding to achieve full filler chemistry at the top surface. Further GTAW process was used for re-melting the top surface of the cladding. Comparative evaluation of the claddings showed that TIG re-melting resulted in increased microhardness and wear resistance in comparison to as cladded specimens even with lesser deposition of material. It was observed that TIG re-melting improved the hardness from 603 HV0.5 kg to 712 HV0.5 kg. Micro structures of stellite 6 contained cobalt solid solution matrix along with inter dendrite chromium carbides which resulted in the increased micro hardness values. Pin on disc abrasion tests were carried out at room temperature and the worn out surfaces were characterized using SEM and EDS.INTRODUCTIONThe crusher blades are used in many industries for crushing various types of material and its wider applications in tyre rubber crushing mills, metal-powder crushers industries etc. Most of the crusher blades are damaged by the wear and impact loading conditions. It is because of metal to metal abrasion and the temperature also plays a vital role in blunting the cutting edges of these blades. The wear is the major cause which leads to loss of material and thus the productivity that can never be recovered (Kotechi et al., 1992). The wear can be reduced by coating of various super alloys which could reduce the behavior of metal degradation even in aggressive environments. Cladding of cheaper low alloyed material with expensive superalloys to enhance the performance of components at low cost has been investigated by many scholars (Deng et al., 2010, Kennametal, 2007, Lolla et al., 2014, Singhet al., 2014, J.N et al., 2003, Ramkumar et al., 2012). Many researchers have reported that cladding is an application of build-up deposits of specialized alloys to resist abrasion, high temperature corrosion and impact loadings. Cladding is used for providing required mechanical strength properties as well as inhibition of oxidation and other corrosive degradation. Coatings are used to protect the heat affected areas like tubes of fluidized bed combustor etc. (Kirchbner et al., 2008, Wang et al., 1994, Hocking et al., 1993, Ananthapadmanabhan et al., 1991, Staia et al., 2001). Coating techniques are widely used for the protection of turbine engine and boiler tubes against high temperature corrosion attack, power generation equipment, chemical process equipment, aircraft engines, pulp and paper processing equipment, bridges, rollers and concrete reinforcements, orthopedics and dental, land-based and marine turbines, ships. Coatings of stellite 6 are widely used in steam turbine blades and boiler tubes for power generation because of an excellent combination of impact, wear and other properties. It can maintain its properties even at high temperature and in harsh environments (Kobayashiet al., 1999, Alam et al., 2009, Munehru et al., 2009). The loading and unloading conditions experienced by the material may induce the surface cracks which lead to its breakage and leaving large pits in the surface (Meng et al., 1995). "Rare earth minerals are usually concentrated by flotation, magnetic or gravity separation methods to produce concentrates that are subsequently leached with hydrochloric (HCl), sulfuric acid (H2SO4) or nitric acid (HNO3). About 75 % REEs are lost in gypsum by-product when apatite is dissolved in H2SO4, whereas more than 80% of REE can be extracted from the apatite using HCl and HNO3 leaching processes, respectively. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to find an efficient process of dissolution of rare earth elements (REEs) from apatite ore by sulfuric acid solution due to its lower cost. In order to optimize the dissolution process, effects of different parameters, namely, concentration of H2SO4 (0.05 – 6 M), solid/liquid phase ratio (1:50 – 1:100), temperature (20 – 80 ºC), agitation speed (300 – 900 rpm), and leaching time (0.5 - 6 h) on the dissolution of REEs from apatite ore were examined in various intervals. The contents of main REEs in the apatite ore used in this study were (as % wt): 3 % La, 6 % Ce, 0.6 % Pr, 2.1 % Nd, 0.2 % Sm and 0.3 % Y. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis identified fluorapatite and phlogopite as main minerals in the ore. The results obtained from leaching experiments showed that more than 85% of REEs were dissolved from the apatite ore under the optimized conditions, which were: 1 M H2SO4, particle size of -150 + 100 µm, S:L phase ratio of 1:50, agitation speed of 500 rpm at 20 ºC for 1h. The XRD analysis revealed that main mineral compositions of the residues from 1M and 6 M H2SO4 leaching are gypsum (CaSO42H2O) and hemigypsum (CaSO40.5H2O), respectively.INTRODUCTIONThe term rare earth elements (REEs) denote the group of 17 chemically similar metallic elements consisting of the 15 lanthanides, plus yttrium (Y) and scandium (Sc) in the periodic table. These metallic elements are generally divided into two sub-groups; (1) the cerium sub-group, which is called “light rare earth elements” (LREEs), includes the elements from lanthanum (La) to europium (Eu), and (2) the yttrium (Y) sub-group elements, which are known as “heavy rare earth elements” (HREEs), are the remaining lanthanides from gadolinium (Gd) to lutetium (Lu) plus yttrium (Gupta and Krishnamurthy, 2005). The REEs occur together in the minerals due to their chemical and physical similarities, which cause problems of separating them from one another (Abreu and Morais, 2014). Although REEs are relatively abundant in the earth’s crust, they are typically dispersed and rarely occur in concentrated forms, making them economically challenging to obtain. There are a wide variety of rare earth minerals, however economic deposits of REEs in mining are bastnasite (La, Ce) FCO3, monazite (Ce, La, Y, Th) PO4, and xenotime YPO4 (Binnemans, 2013; Xie, et al, 2014). Due to the unique physical, chemical, catalytic, electrical, magnetic and optical properties of REEs, demand of these elements has increased dramatically with the advent of new technologies in electronics, communication, construction, energy and medicine (Jordens, et al, 2013). Since 1990, China has provided about 90 % of REEs worldwide. Japan and United States are the largest consumers of China’s REEs. In 2010, China announced to reduce REEs exports to Japan, as it tended to increase prices of REEs and to reduce a stable supply of REEs in the world market (Humphries, 2013). Therefore, there has been an increase in recent exploration activities intended to reveal new commercial sources of REEs and to bring them into production (Antico, et al, 1996). Apatite is an important host mineral for REEs in igneous and metamorphic rocks and can be used as an ore for those metals (Kanazawa and Kamitani, 2006). Apatite is also the main source of phosphate fertilizers and phosphoric acid (Habashi, 2013; Emsbo, 2015)."

Copper sulfide minerals such as chalcocite, bornite, and chalcopyrite exhibit high floatability, thus they can be recovered as a froth product by adding only a collector in flotation process. However, when their surface is oxidized, the floatability decreases and the simple addition of collectors is no longer effective. In this case, flotation activators are required to improve the floatability. Sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) acts as an activator for chalcocite and bornite by re-sulfurizing their oxidized surface portions. Nevertheless, the flotation conditions still require optimization in order to achieve a satisfactory recovery of copper minerals. This work addresses the study of the effect of pH and NaHS dosage on the flotation of a complex Chilean copper ore containing chalcocite, bornite, and chalcopyrite. Flotation experiments were conducted using a Denver-type flotation cell and by investigating the effect of two NaHS dosages (50, 100 g/t) and three pH values (8, 9, 10). Following this process, the surface interaction between the minerals and NaHS were analyzed using zeta potential measurements. INTRODUCTION In recent years in the mining area of metal resources, the complexity of ores and the fineness of grind required to liberate minerals have become serious problems. When ores are complex, several valuable minerals may interact with each other and reactions may become more complicated compared with an ore containing only one valuable mineral. Therefore, more processing steps may be required than for a simple ore. When the valuable minerals exist as fine grains, it is difficult to liberate them and more grinding time is required. Furthermore, the probability of collision of fine particles with bubbles in the flotation process declines and it takes much time to recover them. Flotation is one of the most applied methods to separate valuable minerals from unwanted ones using the difference of hydrophobicity (or hydrophilicity). In the flotation method, the air is fed to a cell filled with the pulp of the mineral of interest and agitation is implemented to introduce air and generate bubbles. The hydrophobic particles attach themselves to the bubbles and float along with the bubbles while the hydrophilic particles remain in the pulp. Copper sulfide minerals such as chalcocite (Cu2S), bornite (Cu5FeS4), chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) are widely known abundant copper resources. Generally, flotation is used to recover and concentrate these minerals. Copper sulfide minerals usually have high floatability. However when their surfaces are oxidized, their floatability becomes lower. When the sulfide surfaces are oxidized, activators are added before flotation to modify the surface property of the Copper sulfide minerals so that they can be floated. Sodium hydrosulfide, NaHS, is known as one of the activators. Zhao (2018) reported that NaHS is often used as a sulfurizer for oxidized sulfide minerals (Becker (2014), Clark (2000), Newell (2006), and Newell (2007)). In earlier work, the authors performed flotation tests on a sample of Chilean copper ore which contained chalcocite, bornite, and chalcopyrite using a Denver-type flotation apparatus. The sample was ground to P80 70 µm with a rod mill and ball mill. In these tests, the following conditions were used: natural pH (about pH 8.5), flotation time of 45 min, 60 g/t AP3477 (sodium diisobutyl dithiophosphate) as collector, and MIBC (methyl isobutyl carbinol) at appropriate dosage as frother. NaHS was applied at the dosage of 0, 67, and 120 g/t, respectively at the conditioning. The concentrates were collected at 6, 18, 30, and 45 min. The weights of the concentrates and tailing were measured and they were assayed for copper by ICP-AES (Optima 5300 DV, PerkinElmer Inc.). The flotation recoveries of the copper minerals were calculated from the results of MLA (mineral liberation analyser) (MLA 650, FEI) measurements.

"PT International Nickel Indonesia, a subsidiary of Inco Limited, mines and processes nickel laterite ores for the supply of nickel matte, primarily to the Japanese market. It has large ore reserves and a substantial portion of its energy requirement is supplied from its own hydro-electric plant. Since the early 1980s, the company has increased its production level and has dramatically reduced its unit costs. Projects are in progress to further decrease costs and recently a major expansion - 31% increase in nominal capacity - has been undertaken, consistent with marketing opportunity in Japan. The expansion project, which has a low capital cost per unit of production, is outlined in this paper.IntroductionPT Inco is a fully integrated mining and smelting facility located in Indonesia on the island of Sulawesi, and is based on a very large, world class nickel laterite orebody located 60 km inland from the Gulf of Bone. Construction of a single furnace line plant started in 1973. Complete supporting infrastructure of townsite, hospital, schools, shopping centres, road systems, and an airport, all had to be built. Prior to completing the first phase, the decision to expand the plant to a three kiln-furnace line was made. A major factor in the decision was the ability to develop the hydroelectric potential of the nearby Larona River. This involved construction of a 30 m high dam, and a 7 km surface canal to the generating station. The penstocks drop 150m to three 55 Mw turbines. The power generated is sufficient to supply the entire electrical load for the complete smelting complex and town site. The unique capability to supply the high smelting energy requirements for a lateritic nickel ore by fully captive hydro power, has, over the past decade insulated PT Inco from the large upward swings in oil prices suffered by other lateritic nickel producers.Wet ore is first partially dried to 20% moisture in two co-currently fired rotary driers, screened on an internal trommel, and delivered to two dry ore storage buildings. The partially dried ore is calcined at 750°C and partially reduced in three large 100 m by 5.5 m kilns. Reduction is accomplished by lancing bunker C oil onto the ore bed at the discharge end of the kiln. The kilns are equipped with five air pipes with onboard blowers to gradually bum the combustible gases generated by the lance oil. The kilns were also originally equipped with two side burners to supply additional heat close to the feed end of the kiln. Calcined ore is transferred by 20 ton refractory lined containers to the furnace feed bins at the top of the smelter. Smelting is carried out in three 18 m diameter furnaces powered by 45 Mw transformers. Slag is skimmed at 1550°C through water cooled breast plates and removed to the slag dump by Haulmaster Carriers. Matte of 25% Ni, 1O% S, 65% Fe is tapped at 1350°C into the converter aisle. The iron is slagged in converters to produce a nickel sulphide matte at 80% Ni. Three rotary Kaldo converters were initially installed. The product matte is granulated, dried, and shipped in returnable rubber bags to Japan. Most of the matte is fluid-bed roasted to nickel oxide and then directly reduced in a second reducing fluid bed reactor at our facilities in Japan.The smelting complex was designed to smelt two million tonnes of dry ore per year, equivalent to 34 000 tonne nickel production at an ore grade of 2% Ni. The cost of the entire project including working capital was $900 million."

A well-defined bulge of the unconformity underlies the mineralized zone over its entire length.The deposit appears to be controlled by an east-west-trending structure within which a particular rock facies (""augen gneiss"") has developed in the graphitic metapelites of the Wollaston Group. The ionization potentials of gaseous Group 11elements are similar, with Au(0) being 1.5 eV greater than the next highest member of the group, Cu(0). The ionization potentials are all very much greater than the alkali metals, making these ?coinage? elements rather unreactive to chemical oxidation. Ionization from the first oxidation state shows a different pattern, with Ag(I) being the most difficult of the Group 11 ions to lose an electron. Gold(I) is noble and only normally oxidized in the presence of strongly coordinating ligands such as thiols or cyanide. Gold(I) compounds are 2-, 3- and 4- coordinate, with 3-coordinate species generally showing visible photoluminescence under UV excitation. Dinuclear Au(I) compounds with strongly coordinating S or C ligands can be oxidized to form isolable metal-metal bonded Au(II) compounds which are often readily isolable. Many have been structurally characterized. T he ease with which electrons are lost from closed shell dinuclear sp ecies (with anti-bonding M-M interactions) increases when metalmetal bonded compounds are formed. T his observation was made by our group with oxidative-addition studies of dinuclear gold(I) ylide complexes. It was superbly demonstrated recently by Cotton?s group who reported the isolation and characterization of a dinuclear closed shell transition metal species which is more readily oxidized than cesium. Trinuclear Au(I) pyrazolates, TR(pz), carb eniates, TR(carb), and benzylimidazolates, TR(bz), are well known and undergo electron loss through oxidative addition forming Au(I,III) mixed valence species and ultimately trinuclear Au(III) species. Au(II) species are absent from isolation in these oxidations. These carbeniates and benzylimidazolates also are excellent bases for metals ions such as Tl(I) and Ag(I). The acidic, neutral trinuclear compound [Hg(C6F4)3]3 also interacts with these bases. We have also shown that the neutral organic pi acids C6F6 and TCNQ form stacked pi-acid pi-base products with the trinuclear Au(I) compounds. In this paper, the structure of the octafluoronaphthalene acid-base product will be described. It displays a feature not observed previously in that the product is photoluminescent with a bright yellow emission. The 3.5 ms lifetime is very long and reminiscent of the long lifetimes observed by Balch for the stacked methyl,methoxy Au(carb). The electrochemical oxidation of tetragold(I) clusters, [Au4(form)4] have been studied in 0.1 M Bu4NPF6/CH2Cl2 at Pt working electrode at different scan rates. Three waves are obtained at 0.75, 0.95, and 1.09 V vs Ag/AgCl at scan rate 500 mV/s. The potential of the three reversible waves is independent of the scan rate in the range 50 mV/s to 3 V/s. The current at the third wave is larger than those at the first two waves. These tetranuclear species app ear to be effec tive catalyst precursors for the oxidation in air of CO. Introduction. The electronic structural relationships of the coinage elements and the alkali metals are similar in the sense that each have a [closed shell]ns1 configuration, yet their ionization energies (Table) and chemistries are clearly vastly different. The Group 11coinage elements have an underlying nd10 level immediately below the ns1 level. Unlike the alkali elements, ionization leaves the filled d electron shell the next accessible for further ionization. The coinage elements are all relatively ?noble?, much less reactive to environm ental conditions than the alkali metals. With the coinage elements, oxidation becomes very much dependent upon the types of ligand s availab le to bo nd to the ionized state.

L?option de largeur permet au client de choisir un équipement adapté à son environnement de travail (1). La largeur de la table de forage peut être modifiée selon les besoins du client entre 48" et 96". Cette particularité permet une meilleure stabilité, et plus de précision dans le forage (2). Il y a 4 pattes hydrauliques à chaque coin pour la stabilisation lors de forage (3). La table de forage a 360° d?angle de forage sur 3 côtés du transporteur. La table peut sortir de chaque côté du transporteur de 40 ½" à partir du centre du transporteur pour faciliter la mise en place de la foreuse dans les endroits difficiles d?accès. La plage de forage est considérablement agrandie. Cette caractéristique qui fonctionne hydraulique, permet à l?opérateur de forer sans être obligé de changer la position du transporteur pour des changements de trous. Tous les types de foreuse peuvent être installés sur cette table de forage (4). Sa petite dimension lui permet d?accéder, par des monteries de 30" de diamètre, à des sites de travail de 2,5 mètres de hauteur et largeur. C?est un équipement adapté aux gisements filoniens. Ce genre de gisement est de moins en moins rentable pour les compagnies minières. La mécanisation des ces gisements va permettre de les rentabilisés en augmentant la productivité et la santé du travailleur, en réduisant la dilution (5). Les manettes de contrôle de la foreuse, les mouvements de la table de forage ainsi que le déplacement du transporteur ont été installés selon les recommandations d?un ergonome. Des recherches ont été effectuées par ce spécialiste sur les cas d?accident survenus avec l?utilisation de ce genre d?équipement. Il a déterminé les positions le plus confortable que l?opérateur doit prendre pour éviter les douleurs prolongées (6). Le système de roulement est composé de 4 roues pleines installées sur 4 planétaires de 9000 à 15000 livres de capacité munis chacun d?un moteur hydraulique. Des freins ont été installés sur les planétaires pour assurer la sécurité de l?opérateur et faciliter le positionnement du transporteur lors du forage. Des roues rétractables peuvent être installées pour faciliter l?accès sur rail (7). Ce transporteur peut être alimenté par une puissance électrique plutôt que par une puissance pneumatique. Cette puissance électrique est fournie par un Power Pack qui transforme l?énergie en puissance hydraulique. Ce type d?alimentation est employé lors du forage de développement, mais il peut aussi être utilisé pour le forage long trou. Cet avantage permet au client qui a un problème de pression d?air d?utiliser l?électricité. Par contre si vous utilisez l?électricité mais que dans un secteur isolé le gros courant électrique n?est pas accessible vous pouvez utiliser votre équipement en utilisant la puissance pneumatique. Le changement d?alimentation énergétique se fait facilement (8). Cet équipement est construit pour effectuer 4 types d?activités : forage de développement de niveau et sousniveau avec l?installation d?un bras porteur, forage et pose de câbles d?encrage pour soutènement de terrain, forage de production long trou et forage de monterie ascendante et descendante. L?avantage est que vous investissez dans un seul équipement au lieu de 2 ou 3. Cet avantage vous fait économiser dans votre budget d?équipement. "In this study, laboratory investigation as well as numerical investigation is carried out to ascertain the transition from one mode to another for Semi-circular bend setup. Laboratory investigation is carried by varying the span length (s/2R); crack length (a/R); notch angle (a); and notch thickness (t). The specimen consists of cement, sand and water mixture in a ratio of 1:1:0.5 by weight and are prepared as per the ISRM standards (2014). Tests are conducted by a servo controlled universal testing machine at a strain rate of 0.2 mm/ min. The results are collected in terms of failure load, crack mouth opening displacement (CMOD) and images of crack initiation and propagation.Image analysis of laboratory tested samples shows that crack initiates at the notch tip when the notch inclination angle is 0°. As the notch angle increases (i.e. 30° and 60°) the fracture begins to initiate behind the notch tip. The direction of crack propagation in front and back side of the sample is same for notch inclination angle is 0° whereas it differs more and more as crack inclination increases. The transition represents the change in mode of failure from mode I (0°), mode II (30°) and mixed mode I/II fracture (60°).Finite element method used to find the transition based on MTS failure criterion. The inclination of notch is varied like 40, 42, 44, 45, and 50 deg and FEM analysis shows that the transition from mode-I to Mode-II take place at 49 deg. The same procedure can be extended to find the transition from mode-II to mode-III."

"IntroductionTHIS PAPER deals with chemical and mineralogical changes in wall-rocks associated with pitchblende mineralization in the Gold-fields area of Saskatchewan. The localities at which the rock specimens studied were collected, and descriptions of the various rock-types referred to, are given in a previous paper by the author (5).The geological field work upon which this paper is based was carried out while the writer was employed by the Eldorado Mining and Refining Company during the summers of 1948, 1949 and 1950. The laboratory work§ consisted largely of quantitative spectrographic analyses for both major and minor elements, supplemented by an examination of 250 thin sections of both altered and unaltered rocks.Character of the AlterationHydrothermal alteration, with associated pitchbende mineralization, is widespread in the Goldfields area of Saskatchewan. The most intense alteration is restricted to the immediate vicinity of fault or breccia zones, but large areas are affected to a minor extent.In detail, the relationship between alteration and pitchblende mineralization is complex, as individual veins do not in general have separate alteration halos. Pitchblende generally occurs in gash-like calcite veins or stringers in wide, fractured zones associated with faulting. Large, lenticular and tabular masses of slightly to intensely altered rock occur in the same wide fracture zones as the mineralized veins. However, vein deposition appears to be-long to a later fracturing period, after hydrothermal alteration was more or: less completed. Generally, the veins transect and are confined to highly altered rock, but on the other hand many highly altered zones intersected in diamond drill-core are barren of mineralized veins."

The flotation separation of salt type calcium minerals is problematic, due to the similarities in their formation properties and the same active Ca2+ related site for interaction with anionic collectors and similar physicochemical characteristics such as solubility, point of zero charge, surface speciation, Ca-site density. The work was performed to achieve effective and selective separation of the calcium-minerals using pure minerals samples: four calcite, two fluorite, and two apatite samples. The effect of pure and mixing anionic collectors such as oleic and linoleic acid to different ratio (2:1; 1:1; 1:2) as well as the role of nonionic collectors on the selective separation of Ca minerals were studied. All flotation tests were performed in self-aspirated flotation cell. The results obtained with the blend of anionic collectors with the molar ratio of 2:1 show a separation between apatite and calcite at pH 5 and a ratio 1:2 at pH 9. The enhancing of separation contrast using the sodium silicate as a depressant for calcite and apatite is also examined as a function of oleate/linoleate ratio. Additionally, this paper discusses the enhancing of the selective separation of Ca minerals when anionic collectors were blended with nonionic reagents. The surface reactions in aqueous mineral suspensions and the adsorption of anionic collectors blended with nonionic reagents were studied by FTIR spectroscopy. An unexpected synergistic effect was observed for some ratios between anionic and nonionic reagents. The mixture of fatty acids and nonionic reagent showed very high flotation efficiency in comparison with fatty acid alone for the flotation of an igneous low-grade phosphate ore.

"Silver occurs in about 200 minerals in variable amount s. Silver ores usually have 5 or 6 and in some instances as many as 10 species of silver minerals. All these minerals may have different flotation and leaching properties and should be correctly identified for successful recoveries. Grain size and host minerals which are critical in gold recovery, are not always as important for silver minerals.IntroductionMineralogical factors affecting the metallurgy of silver are , as for other metals: (i) the silver-bearing mineral s ; (ii) their grain size, and when dealing with very fine sizes; (iii) their host minerals; and (iv) the association they form with the silver-bearing minerals. Of these, the silver-bearing minerals are more often the cause of problems during recovery as opposed to gold whose metallurgy is generally more affected by grain size and host minerals. The problems derive mainly from the complexity of the silver mineralogy: over 200 minerals exist bearing the element in major, minor and variable amounts.As a member of group I-B of the periodic table, silver forms extensive so lid solutions with the other two elements in the same group , copper and gold. It combines with sulphur, tellurium and selenium in covalent bonds and with chlorine, bromine and iodine in ionic bonds. Where the fluid composition, temperature and pressure during crystallization allow it, silver also combines with arsenic, antimony, lead, bismuth, tin, mercury, indium, thallium, and germanium in many instances as a minor element in sulphide , sulphosalt and native element minerals. Cations which silver replaces to a lesser extent than copper and gold are iron, manganese, zinc and probably nickel and cobalt."

"Considerable gold and silver values are lost to flotation tailing from both the South ern Tail orebody and the Main Zone orebody,The underlying mineralogical assemblage of the two ore types is quite different. This paper describes the research strategy employed to determine an economical method to scavenge gold and silver from flotation tailing.Much of the unrecovered gold in the Southern Tail ore is associated with arsenopyrite while silver losses are probably as unliberated tetrahedrite and minor silver-bearing sulphosalts. Processing alternatives tested include bulk sulphide recovery by flotation and gravity, selective pyrite-arsenopyrite separation, cyanidation, and oxidation pretreatments such as pressure leaching and bioleaching to enhance cyanidation response. Gold losses in the Main Zone ore are more closely associated with silver-bearing minerals, pyrite, and siliceous gangue and consequently respond more readily to conventional tank cyanidation. The 5 300 tid carbon-in-leach circuit to treat Main Zone flotation tailing is described in detail.IntroductionEquity Silver Mines Limited&apos;s open-pit silver mine, a 70% owned subsidiary of Placer Development Limited, is located 37 km southeast of Houston in north central British Columbia. The deposit consists of two major ore zones, Main Zone and Southern Tail (Fig. I). These zones are within a sequence of Cretaceous volcanic and sedimentary rocks striking 015 degree s and dipping 45 degrees west. Feasibility ore reserves were 28 million tonnes grading 106 g A g/t, 0.96 g Au !t and 0.38% Cu a strip ratio of 2.2 to I. A detailed mineralogical description has been presented and a comparison of the two ore zones is shown in Table I."

In 1972, a cooperative program to map and estimate the quantity of Tertiary coal resources in southern Saskatchewan was initiated by the federal and Saskatchewan governments. More than 700 exploratory boreholes were drilled over a two-year period, and data were obtained from other organization s on an additional 1500 boreholes in the area. Stratigraphic data and data on each coal seam penetrated in the boreholes, along with technical and location data for each borehole, were stored in a computer data base for convenience of retrieval, modification and manipulation. Programs and program packages were developed or adapted to: (1) select borehole information defined by variable retrieval parameters from the data base; (2) calculate derived information , such as overburden ratios. cumulative net coal thicknesses , mean weighted center of gravity of coal seams in each borehole, etc., from the selected data ; (3) produce posting maps of either selected data or calculated information in various combinations at variable scales on a plotter or CRT display; (4) produce contoured structure, isopach or ratio maps , and perspective diagrams as appropriate , utilizing plotter or CRT display; (5) calculate and categorize quantities of coal in place within user- defined "mineability-economic-reliability" limits. The emphasis in computer utilization was placed on geological credibility of the results and ease of operation by relatively untrained geological personnel, resulting in extensive use of interactive methods. The single most important benefit derived from using computer-assisted procedures is the ability to produce new maps and quantity estimates rapidly and inexpensively as a result of availability of new data or/and changes in external criteria which impose economic or mineability constraints.
