The Somita plant processes low sulphide gold ore in Burkina Faso with a CIL process. After experiencing recurrent low gold recoveries, Somita undertook an investigation on the source of the problem. COREM conducted a mineralogical study on different pit samples. A series of tests was also conducted on a composite sample from the plant which shows a content of 3.4 g/t in gold and 0.48 % in graphite. A reference test in laboratory resulted in a recovery of gold of 75%, similar to plant recoveries for the evaluated ore. In these tests, even if cyanide is not deficient, it was diverted mainly into iron cyanide complex, copper cyanide complexes and by graphite adsorption. Causes of low recovery were also identified and quantified. Solutions to increase gold recovery were suggested such as increasing gold dissolution kinetics by O2 or by lead nitrate addition, change in activated carbon addition point location to the 1st cyanidation tank and finer grinding to increase liberation. Increase in the pH could also contribute to reduce cyanidation consumption. Following these recommendations, Somita changed carbon addition from tank 2 to tank 1 in the CIL circuit. This change led to an increase of more than 5% in gold recovery. A system for the addition of lead nitrate is also under implementation at the plant and benefit will be evaluated in 2013. Finally, pit management for cyanidation will be done based on mineralogy instead of gold content in the future.

Why A Friction Hoist? B EFORE discussing the equipment, it would be instructive to review the factors that influenced the management of Opemiska Cop-per Mines to purchase a friction hoist rather than a conventional double drum hoist. The mine required that 250 tons per hour be hoisted from a depth of 2,100 feet. They also specified that the top speed should not exceed 1800 feet per minute. ABSTRACT A revised stratigraphic section of Carboniferous rocks which occupy about 700 square miles in southwestern Newfoundland is presented. Gypsum, which outcrops at thirty-five different localities, is found to belong to four principal zones in the section. The newly mapped structure of the region makes the otherwise random occurrences of gypsum appear as systematic outcroppings of the four zones which follow the regional structure. Details of several occurrences are given and those most advantageous for exploitation are pointed out. INTRODUCTION ROCKS of Carboniferous age occupy an area of about 700 square miles in southwestern Newfoundland. They occur in a belt, from 5 to 15 miles wide, which extends from the head of St. Georges bay southwestward for 65 miles to the mouth of Little Codroy river (see Figure 1). Several hundred feet of Pennsylvanian rocks overlie rocks of Mississippian age, which are at least 12,000 feet thick. The rocks of the Carboniferous section of Newfoundland are very similar to those of Nova Scotia and represent a northeastward continuation of the same palaeophysiographic conditions. Mississippian measures of Windsor equivalence include thick gypsum deposits which outcrop at many places and which extend under large areas as indicated by sink-holes and by structural considerations.

The paper describes the processes developed and piloted by Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited for recovering copper, in the form of specification copper powders, from Lynn Lake sulphidic copper concentrates and Fort Saskatchewan Refinery by-product copper sulphides. The process includes ammonia pressure leaching and hydrogen reduction from solution. Nickel and cobalt present in the con-centrates dissolve in the leach solution and a method was developed for separating these metals from the cop-per. Methods are described for con-trolling the physical properties of the copper powder produced in the reduction vessel. The chemistry of the process is briefly discussed and the effects of some of the more important process variables are described. This paper presents the results of a research study that is being conducted by the Mine Effluents Program, Mining and Mineral Science Laboratory (MMSL), Natural Resources Canada aimed at evaluating biotechnology processes for the treatment of nitrogen compounds such as thiocyanide (CNS) and ammonia (NH4-N) which are present in gold mill effluents. A sequencing batch reactor (SBR) technology, commonly used for the biological treatment of municipal and industrial effluents, was used in this study. In the SBR process, the micro-organisms were able to degrade CNS to NH4-N and NH4-N to nitrate (NO3-N) at operating conditions of two 12 h treatment cycles per day, with pH maintained in the 7.4 to 7.6 range, and at room temperature (approximately 21°C) and also at 12 °C. The end products of CNS and NH4-N biological oxidation were NO3-N and sulphate (SO4) that are relatively non-toxic. Partial removal of NO3-N was achieved by biological denitrification reactions in the SBR process. The SBR process effluent was measured to be non-toxic to rainbow trout based on the 96 h acute toxicity test. The microbial consortium isolated from the SBR treating a simulated effluent was able to effectively oxidize CNS and NH4-N to NO3-N in water samples (under batch conditions) collected at three mine sites located in Quebec, the Northwest Territories, and Yukon.

The Ashanti mine, located in Obusai, Ghana, West Africa, has been in production for over 100 years, and is currently the second largest single gold producer in Africa. The mine covers a concession area of 434 square kilometers with four main ore types: the quartz vein type, disseminated sulphide type, supergene sulphides and transition ore, and granitoids stock works (visible gold and quartz veinlets). Various mining strategies and methods have been employed for the mining of the narrow-vein ore at Ashanti. In recent years, the mine owner: Ashanti Goldfields Company Ltd. has embarked on a mine-wide expansion program to boost production to a target of one million ounces per annum. With the rapid depletion of its high-grade ore, a suitable mining method was required to produce a high tonnage at low cost to meet production objectives. This paper discusses how the Ashanti mine applied Canada experiences in mining technology to boost production, and the impact that the differing geological settings between the two countries had on the stope performance at the Ashanti operations. Experience developed at the Ashanti mine led to innovative modifications for stope layout and design methods in relatively poor ground conditions.

Quality and durability of sprayed concrete depends on the concrete mix design, the type and use of accelerator and all the aspects of the placement onto the rock surface in the underground working. A large number of influence factors are involved and they must be managed for a successful and durable permanent sprayed concrete structure to be produced. The paper discusses some of the central issues, including how to view the long-term effects of chemical admixtures and accelerators in wetmix sprayed concrete. Permanent lining sprayed concrete for rock support is increasingly being used today and the durability can be equally achieved as for any other concrete.

Demand for both gem and industrial diamonds is very strong. Synthetic production supplies industrial uses, but synthetic gems remain inferior and expensive, so the large gem market is supplied by mining. Several major mines have been depleted, and the market is receptive to new sources of high quality gems. Canada&apos;s Precambrian terrane, extending across the Canadian Shield and under the Phanerozoic cover of the Plains and Hudson Bay, has excellent potential for diamonds, but exploration conditions are difficult due to recent glaciation. Early world exploration relying on recognition of diamond in alluvial sediments was adequate to launch pre- 1900 production from India, Brazil, and Africa. Exploration success in Canada, as was the case in Russia and other more recently discovered sources, however, had to await large investments in effort supported by advanced science and technology. Canadian exploration in many ways is similar to that in other regions, relying on analysis of tectonics, indicator minerals, geophysical surveys, and multiple stages of drilling and sampling. Very different from other regions, however, is Canada&apos;s surficial environment, in which recent glaciation has caused fresh indicator minerals to be transported hundreds of km. Exploration accelerated in Canada after 1960, first in Ontario and the Arctic Islands, then in Saskatchewan in 1988, and most importantly after the Chuck Fipke - Stew Blusson discovery at Lac de Gras, Northwest Territories, in 1991 that led to the billion-dollar BHP - Dia Met Ekati Mine that opened in 1998. In 2003, production from Ekati will be supplemented by that from the similar and nearby Diavik Mine of Rio Tinto and Aber. These mines will bring Canadian output to over 10% of world supply, and will position Canada with Botswana and Russia as world leaders in production of high quality gem diamonds. There could be other mines as well, as sites across the Arctic and in the south from Alberta to Québec are being explored by an array of companies, including De Beers, other majors, and several juniors.

"An OK 300 cu. ft. Skim - Air cell was installed at the HBM&S concentrator in Flin Flon in 1987. Since that time, 3 additional OK Skim - Air cells have been installed in HBM&S concentrators. The cell treats a coarse 70% solids slurry with a residence time of 2.5 minutes. The product from the cell (a unit cell type application) is a final grade copper concentrate with high precious metal values. Since its installation, the cell has improved gold recovery by 10 - 15%. Process variables such as circulating load, pH, froth depth, feed size, and reagent additions all have an effect on the operation of the cell. Maintenance on the cell has been minimal. Initial operating problems involving level control have been significantly reduced and operations are now relatively trouble free. Although very successful at Flin Flon, site specific operating circumstances will determine the suitability of this cell. INTRODUCTIONHudson Bay Mining and Smelting operates four concentrators in Northern Manitoba. Three treat copper-zinc ores, the fourth mills a copper-nickel ore. The Flin Flan concentrator operates two circuits in parallel which treat copper and zinc ores from the Trout Lake and Callinan mines. Both circuits in the Flin Flan mill have Skim-Air cells integrated into the grinding circuits.The Trout Lake cell was installed first and had a payback period of a few months. Required modifications to the cell were made to enhance its performance. These included changing the discharge valve size, tuning the level controller, and installing an insert into the rubber valve sleeve to increase its wear life. The payback period on the Callinan cell was significantly reduced because these modifications were completed prior to its installation.The cells produce a final grade copper concentrate and since their installation gold and silver recoveries to the final copper concentrate have increased significantly. Operating parameters such as coarseness of cell feed dictate the metal recoveries and froth depth determines the selectivity of the cell and therefore the grade of the concentrate.The Skim-Air cell can be suitable in applications where a final product is generated. However, when a bulk concentrate, which requires further separation, is produced, the coarseness of the product may not make it amenable to conventional flotation.The Flin Flan mills Skim-Air cells have worked exceptionally well with little maintenance required."

Introduction 1. Factors on Which the Design of the Roaster Plant was Based The roasting operation at Lake Shore, it was realized from the outset, would be profitable only if costs and losses could be reduced to a low figure. It was absolutely imperative that the operation should be self roasting over the whole range of tonnages and sulphur grades which might obtain during the life of the mine. The roasting operation could not bear the cost in fuel and labour of even a partially fired roast. To meet this requirement, it was necessary to resort to additional insulation in the construction of the roaster and to provide a more flexible means of rabble cooling than the conventional water jacket (see p. 31). A second basic consideration was that of handling a wet, putty-like concentrate. The operating costs of a drier ruled out the possibility of drying the charge before feeding it to the roaster. Moreover, the dusting which would result from charging a dry product virtually all -40 micron (325 mesh) in size would seriously handicap the use of a dryer. Dust lubrication (p. 3S) due to the back-mixing action of the Edwards rabbles, and the use of a Sullivan slapper ( p. 27) on the concentrate filter, completely solved the problem of handling the roast feed. The third consideration was the reduction of dusting to a sufficiently low point that a Cottrell or other dust collecting system was unnecessary. The Edwards roaster when properly supervised, it is believed, can be operated to give the minimum possible dusting. At Lake Shore, the evidence has been that less than 1 per cent dusting occurs at any time and that the greater part of the dust produced is recovered either in the spray tower or in the dust chambers.

"Bubble attachment at hydrophobic surfaces is of critical importance in the flotation recovery of mineral resources and fundamental experimental results have been reported in the literature describing the details of film thinning, rupture, and displacement. Now, for the first time, bubble attachment phenomena are examined using Molecular Dynamics Simulations (MDS). The simulation involves a nitrogen bubble containing 906 nitrogen molecules in a water phase with 74,000 water molecules at the hydrophobic molybdenite (001) surface. During the simulation period of 1 ns, film rupture occurs and the nitrogen bubble attaches to the molybdenite (001) surface, resulting in a contact angle of about 90o. In contrast, the film is stable at the hydrophilic quartz (001) surface and the bubble does not attach. Contact angles, determined from MD simulation after stabilization of the three phase line of contact, are reported and these results agree well with experimental and MDS sessile drop results. In this way, film stability and bubble attachment are described with respect to interfacial water structure for surfaces of different polarity. For example, the interfacial water molecules for the hydrophobic molybdenite (001) surface have relatively weak interactions with the surface when compared to the hydrophilic quartz (001) surface, as revealed bythe presence of a 3 A water exclusion zone at the molybdenite/water interface. INTRODUCTIONAttachment of air bubbles to mineral particles is of fundamental importance in understanding flotation separation phenomena. It is well known that attachment of an air bubble at a hydrophobic surface includes film thinning, film rupture, and film displacement (Somasundaran, 2006; Wilson, Adlard, Cooke, & Poole, 2000). Experimental techniques, such as high speed video, can catch the process of bubble attachment at a mineral surface (Drelich & Miller, 2012; Niecikowska, Krasowska, Ralston, & Malysa, 2012). However, molecular scale information to examine the phenomena has not yet been reported."

"Description and UseDischarge liners or pulp lifters as they are sometimes called are a trough type liner used at the discharge end of the mill where ground ore passes to the trunnion.There are basically two methods of discharging pulp. The First and most common is the overflow method. Here ground ore travels from the feed to the discharge end where it exits through the discharge trunnion in an overflowing manner, hence the name ""overflow"". (See Figure I) The second method of discharging pulp is the grate method. With this method you block-off the trunnion and hold the ore inside the mill for a longer period of time. This allows only the desired size of ore out of the mill. Ore passes through the grate liners, into the Vibrathane Discharge liner, and finally down to the trunnion. Greater control of the ore size results wit1 this method as compared to the overflow method and it also eliminates reclassifying and regrinding. Le drainage minier acide (DMA) provenant de la circulation des eaux à travers les rejets miniers sulfureux est sans doute le principal problème environnemental auquel est confrontée l?industrie minière. Afin de prévenir les problèmes environnementaux reliés au DMA, on doit restreindre la présence de l?une et/ou de l?autre des principales composantes menant à la production d?acide, soit l?eau, l?air et les sulfures. Pour ce faire, différentes techniques ont été proposées au cours des dernières années, dont la désulfuration environnementale et les couvertures avec effets de barrière capillaire (CEBC). Dans ce papier, on propose d?utiliser ces deux techniques en combinaison. Ainsi, on produirait un rejet désulfuré à l?usine de traitement qui pourrait, par la suite, être utilisé comme matériau pour la couche de rétention d?eau de la CEBC. Dans un premier temps, on présente les résultats d?une étude de laboratoire qui montre qu?il est possible de désulfurer les rejets de concentrateur à l?aide de la flottation non sélective jusqu?à l?obtention d?un résidu non générateur d?acide. Par la suite, des essais en colonne ont permis de démontrer qu?il est possible de limiter la production de DMA d?un résidu sulfureux à l?aide d?une CEBC dont la couche fine est constituée de résidus désulfurés. Des prédictions théoriques estiment même que la présence de sulfures résiduels dans la fraction désulfurée utilisée comme matériau pour la rétention d?eau peut avoir un effet bénéfique en réduisant la migration d?oxygène. En effet, les sulfures contenus dans la couche de rétention d?eau peuvent consommer l?oxygène qui tente de migrer vers le bas et, ainsi, réduire les flux d?oxygène qui atteignent les rejets réactifs.

"Sustainable development in the mining and metallurgical industrial sectors can be implemented by two distinct groups: the managers and operators of existing facilities, working with industrial processes and systems that have been operating for many years, in some cases, several decades; and those who are engineering and building new facilities or upgrades of existing plants.The focus of this paper is to look at approaches and tools available to bring sustainable development thinking and action to these two distinct areas. The paper will discuss the concept of working with existing facilities and processes to minimize waste and maximize product from a regional raw material/resource consumption perspective using by-product synergy. The BPS concept has been carried out in Texas (e.g., TXI-Chaparral’s STAR), in Calgary, Alberta, with Suncor assistance, in Montreal, Quebec, with Noranda as project leader, and currently in Ontario with Dofasco as industry champion. Successful outcomes are presented. The paper will also discuss a new approach to designing greenfield facilities or upgrades to existing plants using a sustainable development review process. Undertaking the review early in every project can institutionalize the concept of discussing and implementing waste elimination, design for environment, ecoefficiency, risk minimization and community awareness and involvement in the future capital stock. The review process has been developed as an excellent tool for measuring and reporting on a corporation’s sustainable development progress. Examples of how this approach has been adopted in the mining and metallurgical industry, and the resultant outcomes are given."

"The molybdenite associated with copper porphyry ores is generally treated in a flotation circuit consisting of a separation and a cleaning section. In the last few years column flotation cells have replaced the numerous counter-current stages that were previously used in the cleaning section. Despite this, little has been published regarding the number of column cleaning stages required. Therefore a Moly flotation database is assembled with the objective of verifying the existence of a common upgrading profile. This can then be used as a guide in the prediction of the number of stages required to achieve a given concentrate grade.INTRODUCTIONAlthough the first use of Column Flotation was on copper flotation products, the popularity and understanding of their operation was not really achieved until they were widely implemented in Moly circuits in early 1983. The use of columns in Moly plants has since left a legacy of information, both published and unpublished. The data collected since that time has been used primarily used to establish column operating parameters and to determine upgrading potential within the circuit.Byproduct Moly generally occurs with porphyritic copper ores in concentrations less than 0.1% MoS2. As such, piloting a new moly ore to produce, say 5 Kg/Hr MoS2, in a slurry approximately 1 Lt/min (at 10% solids), requires a moly plant feed of about 570 Kg/Hr, which translates to a mill feed rate of 200 to 800 Tonnes per day (depending whether you deal with Chilean or Canadian ores). Piloting Moly for any lower tonnage would reduce the accuracy of the testwork.Thus a need exists to collect operating data in order to establish the existence of process relationships that could be used for feasibility and design purposes.The object of this paper is to expose a preliminary relationship that could be used for the purposes described above and to apply the findings to a preliminary design of a moly cleaning circuit flowsheet."

The complex system has been developed for long-term assessment of world prices and sale volume of primary aluminium when using the analytical model of the market and market supply forecasts as well as economy development in the Western countries characterized by the industrial production indices as correct data of Western World aluminium consumption are absent, The important part of this system is the model developed for forecasting the degree of capacities utilization of smelters and refineries depending on the price level, The model contains a statistic part corresponding to the capacities distribution by the production cost, and a dynamic part determining the deviation from the static depending on the price variation dynamics, The developed complex system has been identified by the actual data of the world prices of smelter grade alumina and primary aluminium, conservation and reactivation of refineries and smelters in the Western countries within the period from 1992 to 2003. The system was used for primary aluminium and alumina price forecasts till 2020.

PCF?, or Penetrating Cone Fracture, is a propellant-based technique for rock excavation, which has significant potential for the mechanization of narrow-vein mining. The technique is currently being developed for use in the narrow-vein flat-dipping gold and platinum deposits in South Africa in conjunction with major mining companies. The technique is also applicable to steeply dipping vein deposits, such as those found in North America, Australia and elsewhere. The implementation of PCF? in South Africa to date is reviewed and plans for the introduction of PCF? excavation in other areas are highlighted.

As an alternative to heavy water cooling, reactors cooled by organic liquids are being actively developed in Canada under the sponsorship of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited. One of the areas in which development has been required is that of core materials. The factors affecting the selection of fuel canning and coolant tube materials are discussed. It is shown that S.A.P. is a potentially attractive material for these applications. The fabrication of fuel sheathing is discussed. Difficulties met due to large inclusions and blistering due to high hydrogen contents have been overcome by magnetic separation and vacuum sintering of the powders. High-quality tubes can now be produced by extrusion to finished size. A study has been made of the mechanical properties of fuel-sheathing tubes and bar stock. The stress rupture properties of the tubes subjected to uniaxial and biaxial stress have been determined. The biaxial stress tests were performed by internal pressurization. "Particle composition distribution is an essential feature of materials processed by physical separation methods. The amenability to segregate a feed material in a concentrate and a tailings stream depends to a large extent on what is called usually the ""liberation"" of the various mineral phases that are present in an ore. In fact the energy consumed in crushing and grinding has the major justification of producing particles that are as close as possible to monominerallic. Monophasic particles are able to reveal physical differences in mineral properties that make their separation possible. For many years, various authors have insisted on the concept of liberation, without noting that, in practice, it can be a pure concept which does not lead to measurements or predictions. The present paper insists on the concept of particle composition distribution, in which the complete distribution is the information to be obtained, and not the ""liberation·· of various phases, just like for particle size distribution, the complete distribution is an objective commonly desired, and not one or two values representing the coarse or fine fraction.2. "This preliminary paper provides a summary of lab and mill flotation investigations into the copper collector at two Canadian operations. The orebodies illustrated in these studies both contain mainly copper and zinc with uneconomic quantities of lead. Silver is also present as a secondary precious metal.Each mill has advanced to the extended mill trial stage with Uniflot SP129 as the sole copper collector. The preliminary metallurgical results have indicated higher copper circuit zinc and lead rejection is possible as shown in Case Study #2. In Case Study #1, improved zinc circuit metallurgy has been realized during all the Uniflot copper circuit collector trials. A slight increase in silver recovery has also been observed in the extended trials at both operations. INTRODUCTIONThe Canadian base metal industry is presently going through a rationalization period in response to low metal prices and low grade ore bodies. The response from flotation mills has been to reduce costs by incorporating new technologies such as energy efficient large cells, low moisture pressure filters and low steel consumption SAG mills. Other optimization strategies have been incorporated to get better metallurgical performance such as improved process control and monitoring techniques.The newer flotation plants have embraced many of the latest equipment innovations but they continue to incorporate off-the shelf reagents like xanthate and methylisobutylcarbinol (MIBC) . New collector chemistries have been mostly unsuccessful. Our approach incorporates the best of the old and new chemistry into proprietary formulations that match the application. We have found most single chemical formulations cannot meet the demands of the optimized modern flotation plant."
