The presence of high concentrations of dissolved ions in groundwater, sea water or recycled water may alter the water structure, particle surface wettability and colloidal interactions between bubbles and particles and can have a significant effect on mineral flotation. While the impact of water quality on the flotation of precious and base metal minerals is well established, no relevant published study exists currently regarding the effect of water salinity on the flotation of rare earth bearing minerals. This paper attempts to quantify the effect of water quality variation on flotation recovery and grade of rare earth minerals and gain an understanding on which ions existing in saline water affect flotation behaviour. Specifically, it is aimed at investigating the effects of water quality on the flotation of monazite in the presence of cations such as Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, and Na+. Flotation tests, zeta potential measurements, and adsorption tests were performed to explain the flotation behaviour. It was found that monovalent ions such as Na+ and K+ have negative impact on rare earth minerals recovery and grade. The result of single mineral flotation tests showed that the floatability of monazite was significantly depressed in the presence of Ca2+ and Mg2+. The result of single mineral flotation test showed varying depression levels in the presence ions in the order of Ca2+ > Mg2+ > Na ~ K.

Ridgeway Gold Mine (RGM) is an underground sublevel caving (SLC) operation that is owned and managed by Newcrest Mining Limited (NML). Production drill and blast practices are critical to the success of the SLC method at RGM. SLC production ring precharging was introduced in November 2001 to enhance these practices and deliver safety, productivity and cost improvements. Current precharging practices require up to two rings to be loaded ahead of the ring to be blasted in each drawpoint. The explosive may be required to remain in the up-holes for periods of four weeks or more prior to blasting. During this æsleepÆ time it is subjected to repeated shock from the blasting ofadjacent rings and from rings in adjacent drawpoints. The project described in this paper was designed to gain an understanding of the factors affecting explosive performance in the precharging environment and to develop explosive products and operating practices that would meet RGMÆs requirements in terms ofsaf ety, reliability and blast outcomes. Several months oflaboratory and field testing were required to characterise the explosive and quantify the effect of post-loading blasting shock. These results were used to determine the most appropriate loading and sleep time criteria for RGMÆs precharging practices. In addition, the information is being used to guide the development of the next generation of emulsion explosives for use in underground precharging operations.

The banded iron formation-hosted iron ore deposits located in the Hamersley Ranges of Western Australia contain marker shales that are used to distinguish lithology for geological and orebody mapping. These marker shales produce distinctive signatures in the natural gamma downhole logs, which are conventionally manually interpreted. This paper proposes an alternative method of automatically identifying these shales using dynamic time warping (DTW). A Gaussian processes (GPs)-based method for automatic identification is also considered. Both methods are tested on a deposit that contains the Marra Mamba sequence of the Hamersley Province.Both methods were trained to predict the location of the desired shales, and the resulting outputs were compared with a manual interpretation of the results to determine the accuracy. The GP method can identify signatures with an accuracy between 87.0 per cent and 92.0 per cent, which increases to 92.9 per cent and 95.7 per cent where the GP is certain. The DTW method has an accuracy between 90.0 per cent and 91.6 per cent, which increases to 94.0 per cent and 95.4 per cent where the DTW is certain.The GP method has several advantages, including a more automated library building process, a probabilistic output and a shorter run time. However, the DTW method was capable of accepting more distortion in the signature and therefore identified more signatures. This is important in a deposit where the signals are frequently distorted by events such as hydration and folding. The results from metallurgical test programs are used in feasibility studies for design of new plants and brownfield expansions, in long term mine plans, and to make decisions in an operating plant. There are many elements which contribute to a well-constructed test work program. Ultimately, understanding the accuracy and precision of the test work results is critical to ensuring good decision-making at various phases of a project.Every resource drilling and associated assaying program will have a quality assurance / quality control (QA/QC) component, however this often seems to be overlooked in metallurgical testing programs. The principles of “international standard” or “certified reference material” samples and replicate/duplicate testing can be applied to metallurgical programs, although there are metallurgical-specific considerations in both generating and analysing the data.This paper will describe the QA/QC program carried out within the Olympic Dam geometallurgy program. It will present results in the form of case studies from ten years of testing of replicates and bulk reference samples for industry-standard comminution tests as well as laboratory flotation and leaching tests. "The Olympic Dam geometallurgy program has generated a large quantity of data that has been used to create a geometallurgically enabled block model. An ongoing challenge is to convert data into usable information and embed geometallurgical practices into resource model development and mine planning to assist with the identification of opportunities to maximise value.This paper will discuss the methods used to disseminate geometallurgical information throughout the planning life cycle including data extraction methods from the geometallurgy acQuire database, and the inclusion of a geometallurgy module in the Olympic Dam Stope Reserves database. The use of geometallurgical information in short-, medium- and long-term mine design and scheduling, including its use in grade descriptor development and stope value assessment tools will also be presented. "Establishing ventilation in the early stages of a new mine is an essential step to achieve scheduled outcomes that ultimately drive the financial success of an operation. If the primary ventilation is not in place in time to support a contractorÆs work output, then the ore delivery is likely to be severely impacted. Options to increase ventilation in order to address shortfalls are limited. This in turn can lead to reduced revenue generation at a time when a mine is at its highest capital outlay. This can have implications for any company, but even more for an explorer moving to producer. The ventilation put in place to cover the start-up period is also unlikely to cover any extended or increased load required to meet schedule delays.The following paper examines two issues in relation to ventilation with a focus on small to medium projects where the company is establishing a mine using a mining contractor. The issues being: potential impacts on the contract and tender process when using a mining contractor key mine design considerations, such as æcrunch timeÆ, as they interact with ventilation achieving a successful ramp up.A recommendation is made for higher levels of detail around secondary ventilation leading up to the primary fan installation. The information should be included as part of the tendering process and preliminary project execution planning. Understanding the æcrunch timeÆ concept can lead to strategies, as well as back up plans, to minimise any negative impact.By understanding key risks around primary ventilation establishment for a new mine, detailed design work can be completed where it is needed most. Two key elements in the design of a pastefill or high density hackfill system are the preparation of the backfill material and its distribution underground. This paper examines these two areas. Owing to the essentially impervious nature of total mill tailings, preparation of pastefill and high density fill from current tailings involves a physical dewatering process. There are currently three methods available for this process: I. Vacuum or pressure filters. These represent the 'traditional' approach to the preparation of pastefill. 2. Paste production storage mechanism. This is a thickening/storage mechanism developed with the specific objective of producing paste/high density backfills. 3. Fluidization. This system utilises silos fitted with simple dewatering devices and nozzles. Recently developed by CANMET, it provides the simplest and most economical approach. This paper describes and compares the three preparation methods, from a practical and an economic point of view. Once the pastefill/high density fill has been prepared and binder added, the backfill must be distributed underground into the stopes. A fundamental factor in the design of a distribution system is the rheology of the material- No two materials will exhibit the same properties, and a sequence of rheological and related testing is required prior to the completion of the design of the underground distribution system. This paper covers the testwork normally required and discusses the fundamental design parameters of pastefill distribution systems. The final section of this paper summarises the use of pastefill at three mincsin Canada.

Sydney has hundreds of kilometres of sewer tunnels. Many of these are over 50 years old and some have been in service for more than 100 years. The tunnels are predominantly constructed in Hawkesbury Sandstone and many are unlined.Principles have been developed over many years for the safety factor required in designing and constructing new tunnels but these do not necessarily relate to the operation and maintenance of existing tunnels, and in particular those that do not necessarily require personnel access for anything other than regular inspections.Assessment of the stability of these established tunnels needs to take account of their size, their age, their function, and their method of construction, as well as the geology in which they are situated and any support measures which have been installed. More importantly a stability review needs to take account of the consequences of a collapse, with regard to the inspection process, carrying out of any required repairs and the long-term performance of the tunnel.This paper is based upon the authors’ experiences inspecting and reviewing more than 200 km of tunnel in the last ten years. Gold was initially discovered at Ballarat in 1851. After initial alluvial mining, underground quartz mining commenced in 1853, continuing until 1918. The historic miners were considered to be capable of mining anywhere in the world after overcoming the difficult conditions within the Ballarat goldfields. Whilst mining has changed dramatically since the early 1900s the challenges with underground mining at Ballarat have not. Modern pumping systems cope with the moderate water inflows. However, modern machinery and efficient mining methods influence opening sizes and extraction techniques. In some cases modern techniques have accentuated the challenging ground conditions and complex orebodies that were faced by the historic miners. As the Ballarat East project has progressed towards production, technical challenges relating to geomechanics and mine planning are being resolved resourcefully.

The growth in production of beneficiated ilmenite products has been one of the most significant trends in the titanium feedstock industry over the past 30 years. In this period, the production of titanium slag and synthetic rutile has grown five-fold to the point where these products represented 56 per cent of total feedstock production in 2000. Additional production capacity is being proposed as the core component of new feedstock supply projects presently under consideration. A high proportion of these products is based on technologies for which the inherent quality of the is an essential factor. Location specific factors also play a large part in determining the cost of production. As the demand for such products grows, and the availability of favourably located sources of ilmenite of suitable quality declines, it can be expected that existing beneficiation technologies will become increasingly constrained. Existing beneficiation technologies, and those which have been developed, but are not yet commercially applied, are reviewed. Future issues which are likely to impact on the cost effectiveness of these technologies, or the quality of final products, are identified. These factors suggest directions for development of ilmenite beneficiation technologies to achieve economic production of the quality of feedstocks which will be demanded by the TiO2 pigment industry in the future.

Pre-concentration has potential to significantly improve Mineral Resource efficiency by removing gangue early in the process, before energy intensive and expensive comminution and fine processing. However, there are numerous options for pre-concentration and the performance and benefits of these are very case specific. To determine the best option for a particular deposit and to successfully integrate it into the overall mining and processing operations requires comprehensive evaluation. This needs to consider orebody suitability, technology capability and economic viability. The in-situ variability of a deposit and how it is influenced by mining methods and the liberation size of gangue are key factors which are generally not well understood. Geostatistical methods provide an insight into orebody variability, and the overall selection of any pre-concentration solution must be an integrated approach between geology, mining and processing. Many pre-concentration evaluations investigate the potential of just one option. Technology selection should start wide and may include: selective mining, pre-screening (with or without selective blasting), sorting (bulk and or particle), coarse gravity separation (e.g. jigging, DMS), coarse particle flotation, magnetic separation, etc. The upgrade performance of these processes is very ore specific and should be determined from testing, with detailed multi-component modelling used to determine the overall process performance. Many of these pre-concentration processes require significant ancillary equipment, feed preparation and materials handling. It is important to realistically estimate all costs to understand overall economics and select the best option. Some examples showing evaluation and comparison of pre-concentration options are presented in this paper. These include assessments of in-situ variability using geostatistical tools, process modelling of pre-concentration options and overall performance, preliminary layouts and cost estimates, and economic evaluations.

As part of a long-term acid rock drainage (ARD) mitigation study, PT Freeport Indonesia has completed the construction of a highly instrumented, full-scale, experimental, overburden stockpile to further evaluate the behaviour of the waste rock system at Grasberg mine. A total of 24 lysimeters, 30 sets of thermistor strings and 48 oxygen-sampling ports were installed at select locations during stockpile construction. ARD flow rates and chemistry have been recorded since the start of overburden rock placement in April 2000. Measurements of in situ temperatures and oxygen concentrations quantify reaction rates and the oxygen pathways that control oxidation kinetics deep within the waste rock profile. Direct field observations show the significance of advective oxygen flow with respect to the onset of oxidation kinetics. Oxygen measurements show that the rubble zone that forms at the base of a waste rock bench provides a critical pathway for oxygen entry to the waste rock profile. Furthermore, rapid oxidation as evidenced by measured temperature increases deep within the panels of waste rock is observed to occur. The observations presented in this paper provide critical insight for understanding the mechanisms and behaviour of full-scale waste rock stockpiles with respect to ARD generation. The results of this program will assist in the future selection, testing and evaluation of appropriate mitigation measures with respect to surface and face treatments to reduce long-term ARD generation. This project is a work in progress, and at least another two-years will be required to fully understand site-specific ARD generation and ARD mitigation mechanisms. This paper will discuss various design and construction considerations, provide an overview of results achieved to date, and some preliminary interpretation of what is happening within the overburden stockpiles.

This paper deals with the design and implementation of a 17 MW (nominal) surface cooling installation at Impala Platinum No 14 shaft located in Rustenburg, North West Province, South Africa.The cooling requirements included the installation of a surface ammonia refrigeration plant complete with the storage of hot and cold mine service water for underground use. It was also necessary to install a surface bulk air-cooling facility, which cools 400 kg/s of ventilation air going to the underground workings. Primary cooling is to the surface bulk air cooler. The cooling duty of a surface bulk air cooler is heavily dependent on the ambient wet-bulb temperature. Because of the daily wet-bulb temperature variation in this part of the world, use was made of a cold thermal storage facility of four million litres. The excess chilled water is stored during the night, for use by the main drilling shift during the day. This keeps the refrigeration machines as close as possible to full load during the summer, thus maximising the use of the capital expenditure. This paper discusses the control philosophy used to maximise the cooling output, as well as the thermal process. The project consisted of two phases resulting from the underground development phases of the mine. The first phase started in January 1999 and was commissioned by the end of the same year in record time. The final commissioning of the second phase took place at the end of 2002. The most difficult part of the construction phase was the tunnelling of a subsurface air duct from the bulk air cooler to the operating vertical shaft. This was done without disruption to the hoisting of men, material and ore in the shaft. Owing to the size of the refrigeration machines, the ammonia quantities involved and the application on a mine (no ammonia can go underground, either in the service water or in the mine air) special precautions had to be taken. South Africa has developed high standards for ammonia refrigeration plants used on mines, which will be partially dealt with in this paper.

The South Ghorveh Batholith (SGB) and the Almoughlagh Batholith (AB) intruded the volcanosedimentary sequence of Songhor Series (Triassic-Jurassic), during the Oligo-Miocene orogenic phase. The granitoids of the AB belong chiefly to the quartz-syenite and syenogranite clans while those constituting the SGB can be generally characterised as quartz monzonite varying towards quartz monzodiorite, and diorite. Granitoids constituting both the batholiths are low in free quartz, and possess characteristics of the æmagnetite seriesÆ, mostly of I-type, metaluminous to marginally peraluminous and calk-alkaline type. Adjacent to them are located the magnetite skarn deposits of Baba Ali and Gelali. In the light of petrography, geochemistry, mineralogy and field geology investigations they could be classified as Fe-skarn and mainly bear characteristics of calcic skarn deposits.

Over the last decade heap leaching with a cement binder has allowed the economical leaching of low grade gold ores of less than 2 grams/tonne. Despite the continued use of cement as an agglomeration aid, numerous leaching operations continue to experience channelling and blinding problems. This paper describes the development of polymeric agglomeration aids, Extract Ore 9760 and 9960, which when used as a partial cement or lime replacement can result in a higher rate of and/or a higher total gold recovery in plant evaluations. Extract Ore in combination with cement acts to produce a stronger agglomerate which results in reduced fines migration during leaching and helps prevent blinding of the heap. Both of these changes will give a more even flow of cyanide solution throughout the heap and improve solution contact efficiency within the ore. Polymeric agglomeration aid programs are now being used by heap leaching operations in three different countries. A summary of benefits identified at some of these operations are presented in this paper.

Computer-based block modelling of orebodies is now used at Renison Tin mine for the estimation of ore reserves. It is considered that this has resulted in improved reserve estimation for complex 'stratafault' orebodies. The results for all orebody types are more easily understood by the mine planning section and provide greater scheduling capability than those from the previous manual isoline reserve estimation method. A structural overview of the deposit can be gained by combining geological block models for the various orebodies. It is anticipated that upon completion of block modelling for all the orebodies the time spent on the annual ore reserve estimate will be significantly reduced.

Since 2005 BHP Billiton Iron Ore has been working with the consulting company Runge to implement the software XPAC Advanced Destination Scheduler (ADS) in life-of-mine studies. The Mt Whaleback mine, being the single biggest open cut iron ore mine in the world, presents some special challenges in scheduling. The biggest challenge has been the slow run time and difficulty in targeting all ore and waste requirements. The high waste to ore strip ratio means that much of the cost of mining is tied up in waste dumping. It is therefore very important to schedule waste efficiently. At Mt Whaleback there is an additional challenge of managing two types of waste: inert and environmentally sensitive pyritic material. This paper shows how the XPAC destination scheduler is configured to achieve efficient and repeatable waste scheduling results at the Mt Whaleback mine. It also discusses proposed improvements to the process. The overall ore and waste schedule is configured to target mining parameters, crusher feed and grades. The schedule is run in two stages. The first stage is ore mining. The waste that needs to be mined is locked in a sequence. The second stage is the waste scheduling. The waste destination scheduler uses three inputs: source waste parcels locked in a sequence, a haul road and a waste dump block model. The process involves setting some rules for dump progression and haul path selection. These can be validated. The schedule is then run to target the shortest travel time. The results of scheduling are graphical and numeric and can be transferred into many different formats for reporting. The graphical result shows face positions in time that can be used for detailed dump design. The numeric results are used to estimate truck fleet size, fuel consumption, labour and equipment financials. The process has been successful in reducing the project time line, increasing the ability to do more scenarios and increasing schedule accuracy, transferability and repeatability.
