My forebears migrated to South Australia in the 1830s, 1840s and 1850s. All of them were literate but, because they moved about South Australia looking for work, family papers have become scat- tered and I am left with a few fragments. Some years ago I was intrigued to find among my fath- er's books a frontispiece in an old Anglican Book of Lessons. As can be seen Joseph, a mining smith, was also a Freemason. Thus my interest was aroused. I know some- thing of modern day mining communities in South Australia and wondered what they were like 100 or more years ago.

The evolution of the Oaky Creek mining complex provides a good example of the mining cycle in practice. Oaky Creek has been innovative in its choice of mining methods, with virtually the full range of coal mining methods having been used as workings have progressed down dip. The history of the mine is traced through its development (and ownership changes), progressive selection of mining methods as depths of cover to seams being mined have increased, and rehabilitation. This allows the different mining methods to be described and illustrates the concept of æwall-to-wall miningÆ.

The mining of mineral sands in coastal aquifers is often constrained by other land use conflicts and inappropriate controls imposed through a lack of understanding of environmental interactions and processes. The recent experience with the Tea Gardens mining operation illustrates how increasing our knowledge and understanding leads to more effective management of environmental problems. As well as a source of heavy minerals, the Tea Gardens sand bed serves as a town water supply source. From past experience it was believed that mining could cause undesirable increases in dissolved iron concentrations in the aquifer, but the reasons and mechanisms for this phenomenon were not clear. A water monitoring program was therefore designed for the mining operation which was aimed at protecting the water supply borefield from any detremental effects. After one year the results of the monitoring program were assessed in the light of new knowledge and understanding of iron hydrochemistry. It was found that the existing program was not achieving some of its major aims, and was therefore modified to a more effective and cost efficient program.

Numerical simulation by a finite element computer code has bee* used to identify key stages in the initiation of confined bulk explosive by cast primers. The simulations have been verified by comparison with experimental field measurements of shock arrival time versus distance above the primer for a relatively sensitive emulsion doped with ammonium nitrate prills. Further simulations were performed examining the effect of primer size in a relatively insensitive blend of ANFO and emulsion. Immediately above the primers, changes in shock velocity in the explosive were caused by the interactions between shocks originating from different surfaces of the cylindrical primers. At a distance up the explosive column corresponding to about one to two borehole diameters, the arrival of shock reflections off the borehole walls caused a sudden acceleration up to the confined steady state detonation velocity. The simulations reproduced experimental observations that primer size has only a weak effect on changes of shock velocity with distance for confined explosives. However, it was predicted that primer size has a strong influence on the intensity and duration of the pressure pulses that bulk explosive send into the rock surrounding the primer region.

his report is going to point to that the effect of the mining dewatering on the area of Transdanubian Mountain Range has reached a phase when the cost of dewatering and providing damages can seriously jeopardize a profitable mining operation. Up to 60s the interest of mining had been dominant only, but since the begining of 80s the conceptions of industrial development and the value of enviroment protection have been changed. The natural karstwater balance of the TMR can be presented (Figure Land 2.) and the present situation of it points to that the descharge has exceeded the reacharge in 50 %. During the past 10 years the decreasing of the stored karstic water resourches was 1.1 km . The decreasing of the spring yields reached 80-82 % of the natural ones. (Figure 3-4.). Conservation of the present discharge may lead up to the totaly drain of the karstwater regime. A computer aid control system had been to develop by the bauxite mining and using of it the yield of dewatering decreased and a moderate rising of the water table has started since 1986. A recunstruction was made at the biggest thermal-medicinal lake its springs have had their source in 40 meter depth inside a spring cave at the bottom of the lake. Earlier the spring yield decreased due to the dewatering activity of mines. As a result of using of the CAC system and the providing works at the thermal sprino,the karstwater balance has got in the state of equilibrum, the first cost was decreased and spring yield was increased and the enviromental limits were adverted from the way of mining.

Lithological units have been classified geotechnically with mechanical tests and discontinuity measurements from the GRD Macraes Limited, Macraes Gold Project and Rotowaro coal mine open pits, New Zealand. Using these measurements slope stability probability classifications (SSPC) have been quantified based on an adaption of Hack's (1998) SSPC system which places less influence on rock quality designation and unconfined compressive strength than previous slope/rock mass rating systems. The Hack weathering susceptibility rating has been modified by using the chemical index of alteration values from XRF major element analysis. Slaking and weathering is an important parameter in slope stability in the Waikato Coal Measures and Otago schist lithologies and hence a non-subjective method of assessing slaking/weathering in relation to the chemical index of alteration has been introduced. Other major components of this adapted SSPC system are the inclusion of rock moisture content and rock strength anisotropy effects on slope stability. This paper explains the systematic approach of using the adapted SSPC system to classify slope stability probability. The main modifications of Hack's SSPC system are the introduction of rock intact strength derived from Mohr-Coulomb failure criteria which has been adapted for varying moisture content, weathering state and confining pressure. It is suggested that the subjectivity in assessing intact rock strength within broad bands in the initial SSPC system is a major weakness of the initial system. Initial comparison of rock mass friction angles, cohesion and strengths derived from the adapted SSPC are compared with results derived from modified Hoek-Brown criteria, MRMR and SMR classification systems. The advantage of the modified SSPC system is that slope stability probability, maximum batter and overall slope height and overall slope angle for open pit walls can be predicted in addition to orientation dependent and orientation independent stability. Examples are provided, using the modified SSPC system to predict initial optimum pit slope designs in proposed greenfield mine sites.

Roof bolting with resin bonded bolts has been developed extensively in French coal mines. There are three aspects of this development: 1. The reason for and the care used in the development of roof bolting from use as a reinforcement in a classical arched roadway to use as the only support in roadways in ad- vance of the working face (the roadway being reinforced behind the face); 2. The problems encountered and studied, such as choice of boltable roadways and determination of the technical data in designing a roof bolting pattern; 3. Only because roof bolting has been controlled by safety rules, and especially by accurate measurement of strata behaviour, has this system of support been expanded aapidly in France since 1967.

This paper will discuss specifically the performances of vibrating screens having circular motion with inclined decks and linear motion with horizontal or near horizontal decks and both related mainly to coal, metalliferous, and other granulated solids applications where screening and efficient classification is required. Some misconceptions have been applied in the past with regard to making a screen type selection using either circular throw or linear throw and therefore this paper will endeavour to clarify these misconceptions.

Published information on technical and market developments in the uses of zinc tends to dwell very largely on two groups of uses of zinc - zinc coatings (mainly galvanising) and zinc casting alloys. These two groups account for two-thirds of primary zinc consumption. However, if total zinc consumption is taken into consideration, coatings and casting account for a little over half the total. Either way, the health - or otherwise - of these 'other' uses of zinc can have a substantial effect on the industry as a whole. The aim of this paper is to put the whole market picture for zinc into better focus, concentrating on the factors which can affect consumption in the 'other half' of zinc's markets: ò brass - the third most important market for zinc at around one million tonnes - responds to changes in the economic cycle. It has seen substantial changes in the balance between different forms of semi products, and, in Europe at least, some real market gains; ò zinc sheet - one of the original uses of zinc in Europe - has grown substantially in some countries, but remains almost unknown elsewhere; and ò zinc pigments and compounds are so numerous that - barring the substitution of zinc oxide in rubber - major overall changes in the market are unlikely. The paper examines these markets and assesses their potential and implications for zinc markets as a whole.

Dilution and loss of ore during the mining process invariably occur in all underground mining operations. This dilution and ore loss can have a significant effect on the performance and value generated from a mining operation. Further, excessive dilution or greater than anticipated ore loss during mining is often one of the key reasons for the underperformance of a mining project when compared to a feasibility study or annual budget. Mining professionals often go to great lengths preparing detailed mine plans, schedules and economic models only to then apply high-level estimates or rule of thumb values for dilution and mining recovery that can ultimately lead to inaccurate forecasts for the performance of a mine with the resultant loss of value due to the mining of uneconomic material or the loss of potentially valuable ore. This paper discusses processes and practices that can be practically used to manage dilution and mining recovery in an underground mining operation with a focus on understanding and then maximising value. The processes cover items such as the definition and measurement of dilution and mining recovery, techniques for the estimation of dilution and mining recovery, consideration of the economic implications, management of dilution and mining recovery through the stages of the planning cycle, and practices to reduce dilution and improve mining recovery. Common misconceptions and omissions are also discussed.

Oakbridge, in combination with its joint venture partner, Nippon Steel of Japan, is expanding its Bulga underground and open cut mines to meet the growing demand for coal in the Asian market. Expansion works underway will see the Bulga underground mine become a world leader in underground productivity, the introduction of a high capacity dragline into the open cut mine (largest capacity dragline in NSW) as well as a major upgrade of the coal preparation plant (CPP) and coal handling facilities (CHF) to process the increased production. This paper describes the planning and implementation of this major expansion program and highlights the rationale behind some key aspects of the program.

Over the past seven years, a combination of New Zealand-, Australian- and German-led research voyages using the research vessels Tangaroa, Southern Surveyor, and Sonne respectively, have revolutionised our understanding of the Kermadec-Tonga arc-backarc systems. This convergent margin is the most seismically-active subduction zone system on Earth with convergence rates steadily increasing northwards from the Hikurangi Trench to ~250 mm/year at northern Tonga. In combination with the intra-oceanic setting, factors potentially producing magmatic, tectonic, and hydrothermal variability in this system include an increase in potentially subductable sediment northwards along-strike, intersection of the Louisville Ridge (hot-spot chain) and Osbourn Trough (paleo-spreading centre) with the arc at ~25¦S, and the possibility of Samoan (hot-spot) plume ingression in the northern Lau Basin. The bulk of the magmatism is submarine; whereas only a few emergent (some transient) volcanic islands exist, about 80 submarine volcanic centres of significant size (>1000 m above surrounding sea floor) are present between White Island in the south to north of Tafahi in Tonga. About 35 per cent of these centres are hydrothermally active. Important petrogenetic features of the volcanic rocks along this arc system are the abundance of rhyolite (some quartz-amphibole-bearing), and the outcrop of primitive olivine-clinopyroxene-phyric basalts in satellite cones of the major edifices. Many of the edifices consist of complex caldera systems. Eruptions from and degradation of these edifices were probably tsunamigenic. Many of the hydrothermal systems developed within the edifices are likely destroyed during the sector collapses which are the characteristic edifice degradation mode. There are three backarc spreading systems along this margin: the Havre Trough, Valu Fa-Eastern Lau Spreading Centre, and the nascent Fonualei Rifts. The latter are particularly notable in having captured the entire suprasubduction zone magmatic flux for a distance of about 150 km, shutting down the adjacent volcanic front arc volcanoes.

The structure and hydrodynamics of the raceway zone of a blast furnace was studied on a cold model representing a sector containing two tuyeres. The model differed from the usual in that it was prov- ided with continuous flow of the coke layer at pre- determined rates, had provision for changing the tuyere parameters (diameter, protrusion, inclinat- ion) and irrigation of the layer with liquid. A combination probe was developed which per- mitted simultaneous measurement of the pressure field both across the area and through the height of the layer as well as determining the topography of the raceway. The velocity fields in the layer were measured with a specially made impulse thermo- anemometer. The determining criteria of the model were taken as the relationships between the energy of the blast and the particles, the dimensions of the raceway and the cross-section of the tuyere. The model established the effects of the tuy- ere structural parameters, blast parameters and amount of liquid products of smelting on the con- figuration of the raceway, the structure of the layer, pressure and velocity fields in the vicinity of the tuyeres and in the vertical direction through the layer. The properties of the raceway formation and the structure of the layer in motion have been clarified.

Assessment of mineral reserves in any ore- body hinges on both mineralisation characteris- tics and the economics of extraction. The mineral reserves statement depends on interpre- tation of diamond drill information by geolo- gists, determination of the production plan and operating costs by mining and metallurgical engineers and prediction of future income by economists. The techniques used to generate the mineral reserves statement for Bougainville Copper Limited in 1969 are described and the accuracy of predictions discussed. Preliminary results from a geostatistical reassessment are comp- ared with the ore zone model, blast hole data and concentrator reconciled production results.

Pre-drainage experiments have been conduct- ed at Appin, Cook, John Darling, Leichhardt, Macquarie, Metropolitan and Moura No. 2 Collieries. Appin (550 m deep) experiences particular gas problems in development drivages, and the almost pure CH4 seam gas makes difficult tiro compliance with statutory maxima in intakes and returns. Patterns of 43 mm diameter drain- a,.;e holes drilled ahead and laterally into virgin coal have improved gas conditions in working places and have allowed tolerable advance rates. Cook, Leichhardt, Metropolitan and Moura No,. 2 Collieries have experienced gas and stress phenomena ranging from conical bursts less than one tonne to full scale instantan- -us outbursts of hundreds of tonnes with tens ,f thousands of cubic metres of seam gas. Gas ~Irainage experiments with patterns of holes up a,, 200 mm diameter have been undertaken with ;,;siness monitors on the coal to establish .lative effectiveness. The ready availability of powerful desktop workstations, which combine 3D real-time graphics and processing speed better than that of supercomputers of a few years ago, now allows the cost-effective solution of real world geomechanics and underground mining strength simulations. The inclusion of geotechnical factors such as rock joints and porous flow on strength and stability are discussed together with the range of available deformation and failure models for soil, rock and concrete. This paper describes the capabilities provided by finite element graphics and analysis software for modelling and sequential investigation of both excavation and lining, or rock bolting, construction sequences. Examples of the use of finite element models in mining are also included in the paper, together with a discussion of the required people, software and computer hardware resources required to achieve timely and productive results.

X-ray diffraction and differential thermal methodshave been used to determine the mineralogy of some clays used by the heavy clay industry in the Adelaide area. A detailed analysis has been made of the mineralogy and. particle size distribution of eighteen samples from beds' in two pits in~the Recent seaiinents in the Adelaide plains, of six white clays.: developed from the weathering of the Adelaide series of `sediments and, of ,four -Recent alluvial clays from a pit in the Mount Lofty ranges south of Adelaide. Structural clay products 'in the Adelaide area are manufactured from mixtures of these clays:, so the mineralogy and particle size distribution have been determined of eighteen clay mixtures used to make red bricks, cream bricks,. facing bricks, pipes and tiles. Knowledge of this mineralogy is important in understanding the ceramic behaviour of the clays.

Geotechnical investigations have played a key role in influencing decisions for development of the Porgera Gold Project in the highlands of Papua New Guinea. Porgera is located 130 km west-northwest of Mt. Hagen in steep mountainous terrain with high rainfall. Much of the site is underlain by weak mudstone of the Chim Formation and creeping colluvial soils. Landsliding is common on the steeper slopes and in the valley floors. Structures have had to be sited to avoid areas susceptible to these movements. Early stage feasibility investigations included studies of tailings dam and waste rock dump sites, processing plant sites and hydroelectriic schemes. Further studies, leading into the design stage included the Enga Highway upgrading, water supply and power supply schemes. As construction for the project proceeds geotechnical input remains at a high level, with emphasis now on maintaining viable stable sites and refining data on which designs were based.

For several decades miners have been obliged to maintain a vast supply of sharp steels at the working face to meet the hungry needs of rock-drills. In medium and large size mines this has meant the setting up of an organisation to store steels, to make and sharpen bits with all the complication and skill of forging, hot milling and heat treatment, and to transport sharp and dulled steels to and from the working face with all its labour, wastage, and inconvenience to other mining operations.In a mine with 250 rock-drills in use, a flow of more than 60,000 sharpened steels each month has to be maintained to keep the machines fully employed, so some idea of the magnitude of this problem may be grasped.For a long time it has been apparent that it is mainly the bit itself that wears, and many attempts have been made to reduce the enormity of the problem by providing detachable steel bits which could either be used once and rejected, or sharpened three or four times before rejection.At the same time metallurgists have striven to 'improve the quality of the steel and the heat treatment afforded it so that a bit, readily workable In a normal mine drill-shop, could be produced having a high resistance to wear and fatigue; but, although various alloy steels have been marketed, it is still usual to find many mines relying on a "straight" carbon (0.6 - 0.9% C.) steel for their drill steels.Since 1915 increasing use has been made of tungstencarbide as a cutting implement in the engineering industry. Knowledge of the hydrogeological setting of a mine forms an integral part of a mining operation. Groundwater impacts, initially, on mine feasibility. Then, on commencement of mining, it interacts on the operational components of dewatering, water supply, tailings leachates, mine wall stability, stormwater run-off, water disposal, impact on regional environment and mine closure planning. The recording of hydrogeological information is frequently overlooked during resource and reserve definition as well as during the course of mining when prime opportunity exists for the collection and collation of this data. In recent times, the exclusion of hydrogeological data has been exacerbated by use of high air pressure drill rigs that exclude water inflow. The recording of water data has been further inhibited by the use of computer coded drill logs that do not include the site geologistÆs or drillerÆs comments on drilling problems and observations associated with groundwater intersections. Geologists now infrequently directly supervise drill rigs, but visit the rig only intermittently to evaluate drilling progress. They do not see first hand drill performance characteristics at water make zones. Drill cuttings, as drill chips and cores, are now mostly logged away from the drill site so that wet sample locations, visual water flow evidence and verbal comments from the driller are not recorded. As a result, mine geologists now do not direct adequate attention to the delineation of lithologies and structures that store and transmit water. This paper provides examples of water sighting and recording techniques applicable to a mining operation. Examples are also provided where hydrogeological conditions have been disregarded with serious impact on the progress of mining. The recording of hydrogeological data should be maintained and formatted by the site geologists into a useful database for review as and when required by specialists in hydrogeology, geotechnical and mining engineering and the environment. The information can be coded by the site geologist for inclusion into the mine database. A groundwater dataset, compiled during the progress of field investigations, will save the considerable cost of re-drilling and hole re-entry testing which would otherwise be required to provide base level hydrogeological information required for progress of mining. Apart from working mine use, a hydrogeological dataset is a necessary component for planning mining closure and mine legacy conditions.
