When developing a new underground mine, the geological interpretation that guides the mineral resource is crucial to the preparation of a reliable ore reserve. In preparing a robust geological model to underpin a resource estimate, practitioners must weigh the comparative risk of accepting a relatively wide-spaced drill hole pattern, versus a more close-spaced pattern that ensures a high local geological confidence for mine planning but may have an exponentially increased time and monetary cost. This paper details the authors’ investigations into the geological uncertainty of IGO’s Odysseus Deposit, which is approximately 645 km north-east of Perth, Western Australia. At Odysseus, the komatiitic nickel sulfide mineralisation is irregularly cross-cut by nickel-barren pegmatites that have intruded and offset its thick ultramafic orebodies. These pegmatites generate significant uncertainty in the precision of Odysseus’ resource volume and tonnage estimates, as well as the subsequent quantification of pegmatite mining dilution in its ore reserve. To quantify the geological uncertainty in the pegmatite interpretations, IGO’s mineral resource practitioners prepared several geological risk studies over the Odysseus North lode, which is the lode most affected by the pegmatites. These studies included categorical conditional simulation of the pegmatites, preparing implicit geological models with alternative algorithms, trialling a machine learning application to prepare a maximum likelihood geological model, and finally assessing the early results of the pre-production close-spaced drilling to these different models. To assess the precision of the different single-outcome models, the authors’ compared the estimated pegmatite content of each model to the range of possibilities modelled by categorical conditional simulation within the planned stopes at Odysseus North. An estimation confidence score for each modelling method was then prepared for each alternative single-outcome modelling method. From these studies IGO concluded that a close-spaced drill pattern is essential at Odysseus, supporting the view of the Competent Person in 2017 who proposed a 25 m drill spacing in areas affected by pegmatite which had been partially classified as Inferred.

Wire ropes are one of the most heavily used components in a dragline. They are subjected to harsh conditions during the regular usage of a dragline in a mining operation. Hoist ropes are subjected to fatigue due to the cyclic nature of load handling as well as due to rope bending over the sheaves and the drum under load. This leads to wire breaks due to fatigue. Accumulation of a number of wire breaks close to each other can have a detrimental effect on the rope. Furthermore, to allow for the increasing demand for higher load capacity coupled with the inconvenience of having very large ropes, the factor of safety is often compromised, which increases the wear rate. Drag ropes are also subjected to heavy loads. More importantly, they are allowed to drag along the rough mine surface subjecting them to external physical abrasion. This makes the life of drag ropes one of the lowest among those used in a dragline. Suspension and IBS ropes are relatively uniformly loaded during their regular usage although they need to withstand dynamic load cycles as well as bending. Hence they tend to last for a number of years on average. The paper analyses the wear types and their severity of each of these rope applications, and suggests methods to determine rope wear rates and the resulting rope life. The paper further gives suggestions for good operating and maintenance practice that can extend the rope life and help reduce the large expenditure associated with every major rope change in a dragline.

The Roy Hill Project is an independent integrated port, rail and mine development in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The bankable feasibility study for the project was completed in January 2011 by Roy Hill Holdings Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hancock Prospecting Pty Ltd. The Project will deliver 55 Mt/a of premium quality iron ore to a rapidly growing market with a mine life of over 27 years. This study is based on exploiting a 1.2 Bt bedded resource of microplaty haematite-rich Marra Mamba, from which 562 Mt of reserves has been delineated to date. A further 1.1 Bt resource of detritals and low grade bedded is proposed to be mined once the bedded high grade resource is depleted. Roy Hill lump and fi ne ore products will compete strongly with other Pilbara products. As a low cost producer, Roy Hill is on track to capture four per cent of the global seaborne traded iron ore market. The project decision to proceed is targeted for Q2 2011 to enable first ore on ship by Q2 2014.

Differences between the long-term model (LTM) and mine geology system (MGS) grade control block-outs on a blast block scale can impose difficulties to planning crusher feed grade and tonnes on a monthly to weekly blend basis. Detailed geological input to short-term planning has been integral to improve the performance and reduce risk in six-week to three-month production schedules and local variability in tonnage and grades is often not accurately represented in the LTM. The challenge of producing to combined target specifications from different mine sites in an integrated mine to ship business has been reduced with the creation of blast blockout-based short-term model. These short-term blast block models (STBBM or STM) are robust predictive tools created for upcoming benches of current mining areas by firstly collecting data from the pit in the form of bench and face mapping and projecting the structure and stratigraphy down to the next bench. A wire-frame of the projected contacts based on material destination from production blockouts is created and then checked against the LTM. Blast block data from the bench above including assay results and material logging is extracted and validated according to the projected wire-frames (geozones). Individual blast blocks and a full block model are created for each bench production defined by the STP (bench plans). Data output from the STM is in a compatible format for import into scheduling specific software packages. Additional information is incorporated into the STM to allow querying of drill penetration rates, predicted powder factors, material hardness and feed type to further aid in the production planning process and cost forecasting. To date, reconciliation of the STM has been pleasing and certainly an improvement on the LTM, especially in areas where variability is higher due to geological complexity. Short-term predictions derived from in-pit geological observations allow mine planners to more confidently decide on mining block sizes and schedule tonnages and grades, reducing the risk component attached to developing production schedules based directly upon long-term orebody models and mine plans.

The Mt Leyshon gold deposit produced in excess of three million ounces of gold and considerable silver over a period of approximately 130 years. Most of this production occurred between 1987 and 2001. Mining commenced in 1872, however it was highly likely that Chinese miners were not only removing alluvial gold from the area but were also mining very rich æreefÆ gold. Records for early alluvial and hard rock mining do not exist, however gold production was probably considerable. In the early 1980s Marathon Petroleum (Australia) Ltd (MPAL) joint ventured into the Mt Leyshon area which had been held as a mining lease by Noranda Australia Ltd since 1968. Noranda at that time was concentrating its exploration effort on the Balcooma base metal prospect areas to the north of Charters Towers. In early 1982 MPALs parent company was taken over by US Steel. This led to an opportunity for MPALs Australian management to purchase all tenements and licences (except for coal, oil and gas) which were duly purchased for $US 1 million. At this time MPAL had a remarkable array of gold tenements (many of which were subsequently mined by other companies) and Mt Leyshon was considered to be the highlight. Early æseedÆ capital ($A 3.1 million) was raised with backers being the Bank of America, the NSW Government Superannuation Scheme, Westpac, private individuals and a Queensland grocery chain by the name of æJack the SlasherÆ.

The development of a process for the extraction of antimony from materials produced by Greenbushes Tin Limited has been carried out based on theoretical and laboratory studies. The materials treated have included concentrates of tantalite and cassiterite containing antimony at levels ranging from 0.3% to 2%. Roasting under controlled atmospheres is required to stabilise Sb203 rather than the low vapour pressure metal or higher oxide. Sulphidising additives such as pyrite, pyrrhotite or sulphur give enhanced antimony removal from tantalite and cassiterite at roasting temperatures of 900¦ to 1100¦C. Substantial elimination of antimony to levels of 0.1% or less was Achieved.

The gabbroid-hosted nickel sulphide deposits of the East Kimberley constitutes one of Australia's most prospective emerging nickel provinces. Sally Malay Nickel NL (SMN), a wholly owned subsidiary of Gindalbie Gold NL, has established the East Kimberley Nickel Project (EKNP). The EKNP project tenements cover about 2000 sq km. The tenements cover the northern potion of a corridor containing mineralised or potentially mineralised layered mafic-ultramafic intrusions which includes the Ni-Cu-Co sulphide deposits at Sally Malay and Keller Creek. The Sally Malay deposit is located 225 km south-south-west of Kununurra (Figure 1). The sealed Great Northern Highway passes 3 km to the east of the deposit.

Alkali emissions are one of the environmental challenges facing alumina refineries. Queensland Alumina Limited (QAL) is undertaking a number of initiatives to continuously improve its environmental performance. One of these is a program aimed at the reduction of alkali emissions. Alkali emissions originate from a number of sources (eg elevated open tanks), and its level depends on a number of process parameters/ mechanisms (ie splash filling, thermal currents in tanks, streams discharged from a pipe, tank temperatures, atomisation) and climatic conditions (eg wind speed and direction, rain, etc). Under normal operating conditions, there is a continuous low level of alkali emissions from the plant. Certain vessels within the plant have been identified as major contributors to this level of emission, while certain activities within the plant contribute to a temporary elevation (æspikeÆ) of alkali emissions. QAL developed a method using phenolphthalein-treated pads to measure emissions within and outside QAL boundaries. These provide no information about mass emission rates but are important for detecting if alkali material is present. Since mass emission rates are important for determining if improvements in emissions are made, QAL identified the need to design an improved sampling method. Following the development and implementation of a sampling and analysis method to monitor alkali emission concentrations, QAL is conducting a number of feasibility studies evaluating a range of alkali emission reduction options. The alkali measurement method will be used to track and demonstrate progress in this environmental initiative. This paper will discuss the measurement method and emission reduction options being evaluated.

As part of a general review of processing double refractory ores through Barrick GoldÆs autoclaves /carbon-in-leach (CIL) facility at Goldstrike, a study was made to evaluate the use of surfactants for reducing the loss of gold during cyanide leaching of preg-robbing gold ores. Consistent improvement of gold recovery was observed with surfactants at various testing conditions. "Due to the increasing amount of gangues in iron ores, a beneficiation process is required more as a preliminary step for ironmaking process. However, mechanical grinding and washing of iron ore needs tremendous effort that increases operating cost. Therefore, there is a necessity of a novel approach to ironmaking which can tolerate considerable amounts of silica or alumina. In the present study, a high alumina-carbon composite pellet was examined for an ironmaking process. The effect of compositional changes in the CaO-FexOy-Al2O3-SiO2 oxide system on the reduction of carbon composite pellets was investigated in a purpose built thermo-gravimetric analyser (TGA) at 1473K (1200¦C). As a result, alumina increased the reaction rate of carbon composite pellets by increasing surface area, while silica decreased the reaction rate by lowering surface area of samples. Infrared gas analysis assisted with the reaction kinetics of carbon composite pellets through measurement of CO and CO2 in off-gases. Batch flotation tests were conducted on a haematite-bearing Sishen iron ore slimes sample from South Africa using reverse cationic flotation. The effect of grinding on flotation performance, the flotation response of various key impurities in the sample, and the feasibility of increasing metal recovery by refloating tailings in a scavenger flotation step were investigated. The test results indicate that reverse cationic flotation is effective in rejecting impurities from the iron ore sample tested. From a head grade assaying 6.4 per cent SiO2, 2.14 per cent Al2O3, 0.402 per cent K2O, 0.082 per cent P and 0.194 per cent TiO2, the levels of impurities were reduced to 1.83 per cent SiO2, 0.88 per cent Al2O3, 0.095 per cent K2O, 0.066 per cent P and 0.174 per cent TiO2 in the final concentrate at a Fe recovery of 74 per cent. The flotation response of SiO2, Al2O3 and K2O were found to be better than that of P and TiO2. The testwork demonstrated that grinding to 80 per cent passing about 49 microns is essential for upgrading the Sishen iron ore to produce >67 per cent Fe concentrate grade. This grind size corresponds to about 80 per cent liberation of haematite from the gangue minerals. Fe recoveries up to 76 per cent were obtained by refloating the rougher tailings in a scavenger stage, with little effect on the final concentrate grade. Size-by-size Fe recovery data obtained indicated that particles below ten microns were mostly lost in the desliming stage conducted prior to flotation whilst some reported to the froth by entrainment. Some of the coarser haematite-gangue composite particles reported to the froth product by genuine flotation.

The Marvel Loch Operations (MLO) plant was treating ores from up to six MLO sources and in addition needed to blend externally sourced ores with its own ores. This presented a metallurgical accounting dilemma, which was subsequently addressed by the design, implementation and testing of an automatic sampling system. The MLO automatic sampler was well designed and has been the subject of previous internal and external reviews. The sampling action is fully automated and the unit is essentially self cleaning particularly when sampling primary ores. The purpose of this paper is to document the rationale behind the design, the specific details of the sampling station, its use for ore purchase purposes and an assessment of the sampling system to meet the needs of the operator.

RISKGATE, an Australian Coal Association Research Program-funded (ACARP) initiative, has been designed to assist the Australian coal mining industry in improving minimum standards for safety performance, efficiency, operating practice and training. The online system is innovative in that it is built upon a foundation of industry expert knowledge gathered through action research workshops, which is further supported by a broad array of industry, academic and technical resources. In operation, RISKGATE offers a continuum for knowledge transfer and communication of current practice in risk identification, assessment and management in the coal mining industry. The primary mission of RISKGATE is to focus industry attention on prioritising control management as a way to achieve acceptable risk.A Coal Mine Tailings Dam Module has recently been added to the RISKGATE suite. The key risk, or initiating event, associated with coalmine tailings dams is catastrophic failure of the dam, leading to the release of tailings and water. This can occur due to geotechnical instability of the dam itself or of its foundation, overtopping and erosion of the dam, and piping failure of the dam itself or of its foundation. Coalmine tailings dams are also prone to seepage into the foundation and through the dam, particularly during operation when large volumes of water are discharged with the tailings. The most significant risk associated with seepage is the release of potentially contaminated water to the environment. Contamination can take the form of elevated salinity, acidity and dissolved metals. Run-off from coalmine tailings can cause erosion and can also potentially contain contaminants. Desiccation of the tailings surface can result in dust generation and dispersion.The paper presents the background and context of the RISKGATE project, the need for the addition of the RISKGATE Coal Mine Tailings Dam Module, and a description of the developed module, including the five initiating events considered, their causes and associated preventive controls, and their consequences and associated mitigating controls. The Doc Run Company and its predecessors have been mining for over 130 years utilising the room and pillar mining method. This method has left approximately 20 per cent of the orebody in the remaining pillars. The original design and planning for the mines did not include extensive pillar extraction. This paper summarises the introduction of the pillar extraction and backfill techniques which have been implemented since 1991. These techniques include the use of low cost fill walls up to 20 in in height and the use of stinger trucks for topping off the fill. In conjunction with these accomplishments, much experience and confidence has been gained in the use of numerical modelling as a method of predicting pillar stability as the mining of pillars progresses. These advances have led to pillar extraction hecoming a major portion of the overall production and have added to the mine life of Doe Run's six operating mines.

The Morning Star Gold Mine has operated over a 101-year period, producing gold from narrow quartz veins and sulfide stockworks hosted mainly within a dioritic-gabbroic dyke. The deposit has been developed over a vertical depth of 980 m with drilling extending the vertical depth to greater than 1200 m. Currently there is a total Inferred Resource of 4.6 million tonnes at a grade of 6 g/t for 910 000 ounces of contained gold resources, which comprises an underground project and a surface project. Significant variation exists between the grade of drill core intersections and that observed in face sampling and subsequent production reconciliation (250 - 650 per cent). Studies were carried out on ten major production reefs, where the grades of drill intercepts were compared with face samples collected during development and mining. The implications of this study have been used as justification to assign production or stope/development grades where applicable to resources that are direct extensions of the historical development headings. Grade assignment and its impact on sensitivity for gold resources are detailed and show a 40 per cent variation in the gold resource, depending upon whether a production or calculated stope grade is used in grade assignment for the major reef deposits. Recent diamond drilling has intersected approximately 40 new gold bearing quartz reefs and sulfide zones that contain all the key mineralogical and structural indicators, and traditional large variations in gold grades similar to the historical major production zones. The implications of grade factoring and grade assignment are the greatest challenges confronting the resource estimation team in defining grade for these new zones. Grade assignment is seen as a method of balancing known historical production observations with the irregular grade distribution inferred from drill core assay results. Ongoing mine development and bulk sampling works are planned to validate the grade assignment process. The first stage of this process is the trial mining of the newly discovered Maxwell Reef (MR). The stope drawpoints were completed in August 2008 and the MRS1 stope is scheduled for completion in September. The stope reconciliation results will be presented at the October 2008 conference.

Globally, it is anticipated that the mineral sands industry will enter a period of short supply. Demand for both titanium dioxide and zircon is forecast to continue increasing, with new projects needed to come on-stream to fill the supply gap. Victoria is well placed under this scenario as a source due to the high quality of its mineral assemblage, its excellent resource grade and the globally significant size of its mineral sands resources.Australia’s mineral sands rich Murray Basin remains under-developed, especially at its extensive Victorian margins. Development to date has not progressed adequately for the reasons of technology difficulty, history of competition with other jurisdictions and the absence of a platform that requires development as a consideration for security of tenure. Victoria’s mineral sands potential is not just about the Murray Basin, in addition, there have been discoveries in the Gippsland Basin and prospective sites in the Gippsland Basin remain under-explored. Key problems included the lack of available ground for potential developers and the intellectual property of solutions to technological problems associated with the fine grained mineral deposits belonging to a previous developer (with patents now expired).As such, the timing is right to re-visit the potential of the Murray Basin as a site for long-term development with high returns based on current and predicted prices.In order to understand why Victoria’s earth resources in general, and mineral sands in particular, remain under-explored and undeveloped, the Department of Primary Industries initiated an internal review of its role in encouraging and supporting investment in the earth resources sector.As a result, the Victorian Government has committed to taking action to encourage effective ground turnover and acknowledges that a new focus on engagement with industry is needed to bring new investment to the State. The revision of the Mineral Resources (Sustainable Development) Act 1990 provides an opportunity for the government to better align its legislative processes with industry project lifecycles and facilitate access to valuable resources that currently remain undeveloped.Victoria has a track record in assisting projects reach development stage. Iluka currently has two operations in the State in addition to its mineral separation plant that is capable of processing HMC from its South Australian operations. Iluka is expected to ramp up its Murray Basin Stage 2 operations with the WRP mine scheduled to come on line in early 2012. Meanwhile, Astron is actively seeking partners for its Donald Mineral Sands project. The project is becoming increasingly attractive given the recent price hike in zircon; Astron has access to an estimated five to 6 Mt of zircon in its Donald WIM 250 deposit.Given its substantial and valuable mineral sands endowments, the State of Victoria should sensibly be the centre of future investment in project development. However, as previously mentioned this is currently not the case. The Government is therefore committed to implementing new measures that protect security of tenure but ensure that genuine companies can access endowments where they have a clear intent to work those resources.

In this study, aimed at two kinds of ore (lump ore and iron ore fines) and four types of Australian iron ore resources (haematite iron ore, Mara Mamba iron ore, limonite iron ore, and mixed iron ore, such as Newman, MAC, Yandi and Pilbara iron ore), the physical and chemical properties and high-temperature properties were investigated in detail, to master their behaviour and effects in sintering, blast furnace, and non-blast furnace processes. Then, according to the individual properties of Australian iron ores, Chinese domestic iron ores and Brazilian iron ores, etc, the optimisation of ore-proportioning for sintering, blast furnace, and non-blast furnace processes was studied based on the interaction of the individual iron ores and their complementary properties, and the corresponding tests were carried out. The test work results indicated that this method not only improved the technical and economic indexes of sintering, blast furnace, and non-blast furnace processes, but also increased the addition of Australian iron ore. All of these provide the theoretical basis and technical support for highly effective use of Australian iron ore resources in iron and steel enterprises in China.

There is currently in the mining industry, as well as in other industries, a movement seeking to increase investments in decarbonisation processes to help combat global warming. Among some initiatives taken is replacing diesel-powered mobile equipment in the mines with electricity-powered equipment, such as electric off-highway trucks or even belt conveyors in the mining operation. Samarco is a Brazilian mining company that since its conception has used a conveyor belt mining system in its mining operation, using only a small number of trucks to complement the mining process. This mining process that combines conveyor belts and trucks has brought environmental gains for the company since the environmental impact of conventional truck-only mining is greater than that of the combined system. To measure these gains, a medium-term mining plan was developed in which two fleet scenarios were detailed. One scenario contemplated a high level of detail of belt mining seeking its maximisation, while the other considered the operation performed 100 per cent by trucks, eliminating the use of conveyor belts. Through the comparison of these two scenarios, it was possible to make an inventory of atmospheric emissions and greenhouse gases for each one of them considering data such as types of equipment, diesel consumption, total distance travelled and energy consumption. The results showed that the fleet scenario with conveyor belts results in periods with up to 15 per cent less greenhouse gas emissions and 37 per cent less total particulates compared with the truck-only scenario. Therefore, the results confirm the environmental benefits of the method and the need to look for ways to even expand it in future operations through a study to identify the potential areas in the long-term mining plan.

Mining is recognised as being one of the most dangerous industries in the world due to the difficult working conditions. Working in such hazardous circumstances in an underground mine often results in a variety of accidents. The working conditions at Kazakhstan’s underground mines have deteriorated owing to a lack of a risk-reduction plan and methodology. This paper evaluates different underground mines in Kazakhstan and demonstrates the employed mining method and the observed failure modes. Risk assessment has long been recognised as a valuable technique for preventing accidents. In the underground mining sector, risk assessment tools play an important role in avoiding work-related accidents. However, geotechnical uncertainty is a significant source of severe incidents like stress-induced roof collapse, wedge failure, seismicity etc, which result in human and financial losses. A geotechnical risk assessment performed early in the mine design process might assist justify a different mine design component, such as different support systems for a dangerous location within the mine openings during mining. The goal of this research is to create a damage/failure database aiming at the development of a geomechanical risk assessment methodology. This work identifies a thematic structure linked to risk assessment and management for the examined Kazakhstan mining sector. As part of the developed database, the dominant modes of failure within the Kazakhstan underground mining conditions were investigated. The study will provide opportunities to establish future research objectives for Kazakhstan’s mining industry where there are significant gaps between state-of-the-art research and mining operations in practice.
