The ocean floor is increasingly being discussed in terms of its resource potential. New discoveries, improved knowledge and access to unexplored areas of the deep sea and continental shelf are some factors contributing to a renewed interest in the seafloor exploration and mining industry. The industry has been referred to as the ænext minerals frontierÆ. To date, much of the research has focused on proving economic and technical viability of the industry, with environmental issues addressed locally. However, there is limited research internationally, and none known in Australia that considers the social viability of the industry, addressing issues such as regulatory contexts, international precedence and public acceptability. Does the nascent seafloor exploration and mining industry have a social license to operate? Does it have support amongst the wider community? If not, why not? The Wealth from Oceans National Research Flagship explored these questions by scoping the social issues that would surround an expansion. Two desktop studies provide insight into the current level of activity in seafloor exploration and mining, recent developments and the regulatory regimes on which the industry is based. One study focused on the situation in Australia, while the other was internationally focused. A series of workshops were held with key stakeholders from government agencies, industry and other interested parties, such as environmental groups and the fisheries industry. These workshops identified and explored the different stakeholdersÆ perceptions of the benefits, concerns, opportunities and key questions associated with an expansion of the seafloor mining industry. The desktop studies revealed that Australia is one of only a few countries with legislation specific to seafloor exploration and mining. Nevertheless, barriers to licence approval exist because of lack of precedent in applying this legislation. Consequently, the decision process can be vulnerable to political issues and subjective judgements. The outcomes from the stakeholder workshops suggest this inconsistency may be influenced by the high levels of concern and uncertainty over environmental impacts. Uncertainty over environmental impacts can influence the acceptability of an environmental impact assessment (EIA) and also mean the perception of risk is variable. Overall, this research suggests that the future of the seafloor exploration and mining industry will be highly dependent on AustraliaÆs ability to:improve the knowledge-base underpinning the regulatory regime,generate open and transparent communications between stakeholders, andimprove the understanding of policy and regulatory processes.

Experimental investigations were made into the decoppering of lead, tin, and bismuth using a technique which approximates on the small scale to industrial practice.Decoppering lead with sulphur alone in the absence of tin and silver did not proceed to low copper values. With a minimum of 0·02 per cent Ag or 0·10 per cent Sn, lead was decoppered to less than 0·01 per cent Cuby stirring with 0·2 per cent S over 10 min. Decoppering of tin or bismuth proceeded rapidly to very low levels in the absence of any "catalytic" impurities, at any rate in excess of those concentrations normally encountered in commercially pure tin or bismuth.

Mining at Waihi on the Martha Hill commenced in 1878 and between 1892 and 1953 produced 35 million ounces of bullion from some 13.5 million short tons of ore from 40 named quartz reefs. The general geology of the ore is recorded in detail with differing interpretations by Bell and Fraser (1912) and Morgan (1924). The reefs and stringers have formed by fissure filling and replacement in mainly quartz andesite dacite flows within the Waihi 'Graben'. The host rocks are extensively propylitised with intense alteration forming zones of kaolin adjacent to the main reefs.

Geological mapping in various parts of Australia is revealing a number of regional associations of mineralizations with particular persistent stratigraphic horizons. Such associations have been found in the Broken Hill district of New South Wales, in the Nairne district of South Australia, in the Mount Isa district of Queensland, and in the Cloncurry district of Queensland. The question has arisen as to whether such mineralizations are of sedimentary origin, syngenetic with the enclosing formation, or whether they are of epigenetic origin, and reflect the selective hydrothermal mineralization of favourable beds on a regional scale.The purpose of this investigation is to test the use of sulphur-selenium ratios as an objective method of distinguishing between suphide deposits or sedimentary or supergene origin, and sulphide deposits of hydrothermal origin, with particular application to the districts mentioned. At the same time much data has been accumulated as to the selenium content of Australian sulphide ores. The possible use of sulphur-selenium ratios for this purpose was first demonstrated by Goldschmidt and his coworkers (1933; 1935), and later by Carstens (1941). Goldschmidt and Strock (1935) found that pyrite of sedimentary origin had a sulphur : selenium ratio of the order of 200,000 or more, whereas pyrite of hydrothermal origin had a sulphur: selenium ratio of 10,000 to 20,000. Carstensfound that sedimentary pyrite deposits in Norway contained less than 1 g. Se per ton, whereas hydrothermal pyrite deposits contained 20 to 30 g. per ton.

Recent advances in X-ray diffraction (XRD) technology have made it possible to conduct powder XRD measurements on samples at high temperatures during reaction. State-of-the-art detectors are now capable of rapidly acquiring diffraction patterns across a wide angular range (typically 120"20) enabling phase transformation rates to be measured directly during sample reaction. In this study, the phase transformations during the reduction of hematite to metallic iron by five per cent hydro ºen in nitrogen gas mixtures, were measured in situ between 500 - 700 C. Complete X-ray diffraction patterns were acquired within 15 seconds every one minute, enabling direct measurement of the transient phase abundances during the reaction. The data were quantitatively analysed by the Rietveld method to yield the abundances of hematite, magnetite, wustite and metallic iron, as functions of time during the reduction process. A first-order reactions-in-series model was proposed, and the reaction rate constants and activation energy were determined from the time-dependent phase abundance data.

Industrial minerals by definition are minerals used as part of an industrial process and usually are one of a number of components, eg finely ground Limestone is an extender in the manufacture of paint. They are normally non-metallic and non-fuel, but like all generalisations there are a number of exceptions. Take rutile û a source of titanium, a metal and also the raw material in the manufacture of titanium dioxide pigment. Industrial minerals under this general definition include construction and agricultural minerals. They are included in the same grouping, principally because their sources are similar and in many cases the raw material, example limestone, can be multi-functional. Calcium carbonate raw materials such as limestone, are used in a wide range of applications from industry as an inert filler, to agriculture as a 'lime' source and to construction and as an important component in the manufacture of cement. As far as this paper is concerned I will avoid discussing the agricultural or construction applications, including burnt lime production.

Certain copper ores from the Nchanga Copper Mine in the northern Zambia Copperbelt are refractory with respect to conventional beneficiation techniques. This paper reviews recent study of those ores to determine their mineralogy, textures and nature of copper occurrence. Two suites of refractory ores were selected for study: 1.  samples of stockpiled ores from an open pit, and 2.  drill core samples from copper ores. Both sample suites are from the upper orebody at Nchanga and contain about 0.3 - 1.4 per cent copper as determined by atomic absorption, but they represent separate stratigraphic, mineralogical and beneficiation problems. Ore microscopic examination showed that fine-grained copper sulfides are totally lacking from both suites of refractory ores. Petrographic study found malachite in the refractory ores from the open pit, but that malachite probably is post-mine. The opaque mineralogy of the open pit refractory ores is dominated by goethite that occurs mostly as pseudomorphic grains after pyritohedral pyrite crystals that average 200 - 250 ¦m across. Haematite occurs as bands within or as outer shells of the goethite grains. Additional goethite occurs locally as finer-grained areas of exotic goethite. The opaque minerals in the drill core refractory ores are dominated by euhedral ilmenite crystals about 50 - 175 ¦m long. Anatase is the dominant opaque mineral in some drill core samples where it is largely pseudomorphic after ilmenite crystals. Goethite accompanies malachite in unusual drill core refractory ores that have experienced intense hydrothermal alteration. Thus, ore microscopy and petrography showed that fine-grained chalcopyrite and bornite and pre-mine malachite were not the causes of the refractory nature of the ores studied. Electron microprobe revealed that most of the copper occurred in solid solution within micas. Application of automated SEM techniques has provided a detailed understanding of the distribution of copper in these refractory ores.

An elongate belt containing granodiorite stocks with associated stockwork molybdenum mineralisation in west Nelson is correlated with the I-type Separation Point Suite of mid Cretaceous age. Trace element characteristics of the 'Mo-granites', and the Separation Point Batholith strongly suggest a primitive, subcrustal origin for these granitoids, by partial melting of oceanic basaltic crust or upper mantle material in a subduction zone. They were emplaced in the upper crust without undergoing significant differentiation or contamination by sialic crust. Molybdenum, which is at levels of approximately 5 ppm in unaltered granite, is not significantly reduced in altered (but unmineralised) granite. This suggests the metallisation has a magmatic, subcrustal source and is not derived by hydrothermal leaching of upper crustal rocks or the granitic host rocks. Geochemistry of the 'Mo-granite' belt, in particular low K2O, calc-alkali to calcic Peacock Index, high Sr and TiO2, and low Rb, Nb and F, suggest classification as calcic granitoids similar to those which host porphyry copper deposits, indicating grades of mineralisation are likely to be low.

A clear understanding of the meanings of terms is important when discussing a project. Whether it is a submission, an investment study, a feasibility study, an environmental impact statement, an estimate, a tender, a contract, or a close-out.report, the need for all parties involved to understand what is under discussion or what has been written is paramount. The clarity of definition and the level of understanding can affect the outcome of the project. It is vital that all parties know what is wanted, what is expected, and what it will cost. This paper draws attention to some of the problems that beset many projects, clients, project managers and contractors, and it is hoped that its presentation will encourage us to pay more attention to defining what it is that is required. Ultimately we should all be the richer for having defined and understood the requirements at the beginning rather than at the end.

Northern Iron Ltd (NIL) is an Australian listed company that recently brought the historic Sydvaranger open pit Magnetite Mine (the Project) in Northern Norway successfully back into production. NIL made the decision to operate the Project on an owner mining basis, due to limited large scale mining expertise amongst Norwegian mining contractors, a long mine life, a limited range in planned mining rate and to minimise costs. As a new mine operator in a country where labour practices are strictly regulated, there was the desire to reduce the risk associated employing and managing skilled personnel. This was achieved by coupling the purchase of the required mining equipment from the original equipment manufacturer's (OEM) regional dealers with OEM supported Maintenance and Repair Contracts (MARC). This paper examines the process that was followed to implement an owner mining operation in a short time frame; approximately 12 months from the initial requests for quotation to actual delivery of mining equipment to site, and some of the challenges faced. By following a formal and well-tested process, not only was the implementation achieved in the set time frame, but significant value was added through the cost savings achieved in the equipment purchase price and MARC rates that were negotiated through this process.

A panel cave using LHDs for ore extraction came into production at Premier in 1990 at a depth of 630 metres below surface on the western side of the mine in the BA5 mining block. A post-undercut mining sequence was used with all development on both the undercut and production levels completed prior to the undercut being advanced over the pre-developed drawbells. Support and rock mass damage on the production level was extensive as the undercut moved overhead. Undercutting and coarse fragmentation created problems. The mining sequence was changed to an advance undercut with the minimum of development and support undertaken on the production level prior to the undercut moving overhead. Only once the abutment stresses had stabilised were drawbells developed and final support installed. The height of the undercut drill design was decreased from 18 to 13 metres. The changes resulted in markedly less rock mass and support damage on the production level. Lessons learned in the BA5 mining block on the 630 level were incorporated into planning and scheduling the BB1E mining block which came into production on the 732 metre level on the eastern side of the mine in 1996. An advance undercut mining sequence was planned, undercut height was minimised and undercutting parameters were optimised in terms of the BA5 experience. Numerous problems still occurred. As the undercut area increased in size severe spalling from the cave back resulted in vertical propagation of the cave to a height of 30 metres instead of the planned 13 metres. The resultant coarse fragmentation created secondary blasting problems and an excess of undercut ore that had to be loaded and trammed, slowed the rate of undercut advance. The planned mining sequence was compromised and considerable support and rock mass damage resulted on the production level below. Once these problems had been overcome the undercut advanced at the planned rate and continuous caving initiated at the predicted hydraulic radius. At a later stage the unexpected ingress of water hampered undercut drilling and slowed the rate of undercut advance in a section of the cave. Leads and lags between adjacent tunnels and the overall face shape could not be developed as planned. The rate of natural horizontal cave propagation exceeded the rate of undercut advance and three undercut drilling tunnels were extensively damaged. More tunnel development on the production level prior to undercutting than was planned resulted. The slow advance of the undercut and high abutment stresses caused extensive damage to installed support and the rock mass on the production level, 15 metres below. Experience in the BB1E mining block on the 732 metre level has taught that an advance undercut mining sequence reduces damage on the production level markedly. Extremely tight control on the rate of undercut advance, leads and lags between adjacent tunnels and overall undercut face shape as well as extraction ratio, tunnel development and support sequence on the production level below is required. Premier Mine plans to implement a block cave at a depth in excess of 1000 metres within the next decade. All the experience gained on current mining levels together with data collection and numerical modeling is being used to plan the proposed mining operation. The geotechnical challenge of mining at this depth in weak rock has been identified as the greatest risk to the project. Challenges centre around adopting the correct mining sequence, limiting the extent of rock mass damage associated with undercutting and effective support. The hydraulic radius needed to initiate caving, fragmentation, drawpoint spacing, secondary blasting and the possibility of seismicity are geotechnical concerns that are being addressed. Results to-date suggest that a pre-undercut mining sequence with all development and support on the production level carried out only after the undercut abutment stresses have passed overhead will have to be implemented.

The Golden Bar pit is part of the Macraes mine, the largest gold mine in New Zealand. The Macraes mine is mainly developed in the late metamorphic Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone. However, the Golden Bar pit was developed in a mineralised zone about 200 m structurally above the Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone. The host rocks are dominated by massive quartzofeldspathic schist (5 - 10 m layers) with minor intercalations (1 - 5 m scale) of micaceous schist. All the host schist has disseminated pyrite (micron to mm scale) from pervasive late metamorphic hydrothermal alteration.   In addition, there has been more localised (metre scale) relatively intense hydrothermal alteration controlled by shears subparallel to foliation. Gold occurs in three types of mineralised rock: silicified schist, which dominates, fissile black sheared rock, and cross-cutting quartz veins. There are three principal structural zones in the deposit: 1.   a strongly sheared micaceous and graphitic zone at the base of the structural sequence; 2.   a weakly deformed schist zone cut by relatively flat-lying (= 20¦ dipping) quartz veins; and 3.   a stack of imbricated schist pods and deformed silicified schist confined between two sub-parallel low-angle (ca. 30¦) shears.   These structural zones were juxtaposed during thrust deformation. The lower black shear zone has m-scale folding and over-thrusting packages, kink folding and foliation stacking with associated striations that imply west-directed thrusting. Striations and imbrication geometry between the upper two shears imply oblique thrusting that was directed towards the west. Post-mineralisation normal faults locally disrupt the mineralised zone. The Golden Bar pit mineralised zone has some of the structural and mineralogical characteristics of the main Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone, and may be genetically related.

In a predrained gassy coalmine, ventilation control plays a secondary role to the longwall (LW) goaf drainage systems to safely manage panel return gas levels. Typically, the LW specific gas emission (SGE) estimation models provide anticipated goaf gas emissions and arriving at required gas drainage capacity for various coal production scenarios. A study comparing the various LW goaf gas hole spacing patterns with weekly production rates of up to 270 kt/w of an operating mine with high SGE rates (~20 m3/t) was carried out. The goaf capture efficiency of LW panels ranged from 64 per cent to 85 per cent. For the first time, gas content of upper seam data post LW retreat were used to verify the current SGE prediction models. This study has shown that an average of 50 m goaf spacing is optimal for management of high production retreat gassy LW panels in presence of multiple upper and lower seams with gas emission zone influence reaching up to 200 m above workings. Due to the horizontal stress direction related geotechnical issues, goaf hole failures just behind the LW face is a recurring challenge resulting in significant and immediate increase in LW panel return gas levels. This paper highlights the shortcomings of current SGE prediction models for goaf gas estimation, and evolution of 50 m goaf hole spacing embedded in design process in managing the LW tailgate gas levels.CITATION:Belle, B, 2017. The North Arm of Sulawesi hosts numerous gold and base metal occurrences. Compilation and analysis of geological, tectonic, geochemical and isotopic age date data collected over the past six years on the central part of this region have resulted in the definition of 184 prospects and mineral occurrences of various styles occurring in diverse geological settings representing varying tectonic environments and erosional levels. Mineralisation of the following styles have been recognised: porphyry Cu-Au; porphyry-related gold and base metal veins; high-sulphidation Cu-Au-As; low-sulphidation epithermal Au; hydrothermal breccias; and sediment-hosted Au mineralisation. Clusters of occurrences/prospects form mineralised districts representative of magmatic systems with characteristics determined by the tectonic environment prevailing during formation and the subsequent level of exposure by erosion. Distinctly different Miocene and Pliocene porphyry systems are now recognised whilst most of the remaining epithermal mineralisation is thought to be Pliocene or later. The central North Arm of Sulawesi is composed of a Miocene magmatic island arc that is built on an Early Tertiary basement of predominantly oceanic basaltic rocks and overprinted by a Pliocene magmatic arc. A structural fabric dominated by SSE arc-normal and ESE arc-parallel faults was established during the Miocene under a dextral wrench regime and intersections of these major fault sets are favoured sites for Miocene porphyry Cu-Au mineralisation. Strong dextral tension caused by the collision of the Sula Platform, at the close of the Miocene, led to arc-parallel rifting. Sinistral reactivation of the major Miocene structures in the Pliocene led to further rifting, and ENE-dilation. Pliocene intrusions and related mineralisation exploit these dilatant settings. Miocene porphyry Cu-Au mineralisation occurs where late-Miocene quartz diorite stocks have intruded the margins of earlier Miocene plutons of intermediate composition. Porphyry centres have associated peripheral base metal veins, and skarns. Overprinting of porphyry vein sets by epithermal veins is common. Sediment-hosted gold mineralisation occurs in calcareous sediments associated with the Miocene arc. Remnants of the Pliocene volcanic arc, comprised of dacite volcanics, intrusions and voluminous pyroclastics, dominate the south coast and host porphyry Cu-Au, high sulphidation Cu-Au-As deposits, low-sulphidation epithermal Au veins and disseminated gold mineralisation. In some prospects, mineralised sinters are preserved adjacent to vein systems and deeper mineralised stockworks. Diatremes are common and large caldera structures have been identified. Pliocene stocks and porphyry dyke swarms penetrate the main central and northern parts of the Miocene- arc introducing additional porphyry Cu-Au, base metal hydrothermal breccias and low-sulphidation gold veins. Rapid uplift and erosion has resulted in a highly variable preservation of styles of mineralisation adding further diversity within the mineralised districts and telescoping within deposits.

The Archaeozoic Willyama Complex at Broken Hill has suffered several periods of deformation and metamorphism. New structural and petrological information together with that available from the literature gives a picture of the metamorphic evolution of the Barrier Ranges. Several epochs of metamorphism are recognized, and potassium-argon dating of minerals has been applied with limited success to the resolution of these epochs.INTRODUCTIONAdvancements in the mineral industry at Broken Hill over the past eighty years have been accompanied by a continual striving towards increased understanding of both the geological history of the Barrier Ranges and the environment of the Broken Hill ore deposits. However, although many detailed studies of selected localities and particular-aspects of Broken Hill geology have been carried out recently, the regional geology of the Barrier Ranges as a whole has received little attention from a petrological viewpoint since the pioneer investigations of Mawson (1912) and Browne (1922). There still remains a great need for regional surveys combining field studies of the habits, structures and outcrop relationships of the various rock types with laboratory investigations of their chemistry, mineralogy and microscopic ,fabrics. Recording observations arising from three brief visits to the Broken Hill area during 1959 and 1963 may stimulate further surveys.During one of these visits, the generosity of the Zinc Corporation Limited in providing field transport and geological guidance enabled the writer to collect material and study field relationships and appearance of the various rock types at numerous localities covering most of the Willyama outcrop. Ferruginous manganese deposits have been known at Ripon Hills since the late 1950s. The main group of deposits occur in an area 6 km by 5 km and these were extensively investigated by Longreach Metals N.L. during1971 and 1972 for possible commercial exploitation.Ripon Hills is a dissectcd fault plateau 350 m above sea level formed by the uplift of a block of gently dipping Proterozoic shales, cherts, and dolomite. The plateau consists of chert breccia which is underlain by massive dolomite. The shales which are ferruginous and manganiferous overlie the chert breccia but are now only preserved, in places, in the broad depression and valleys of the plateau.The ore deposits occur as supergene replacement of the shales and were investigated by geological mapping, grid percussion and diamond drilling, and bulk beneficiation testing. Iron and manganese oxides erraticallyreplace Shale accompanied by the leaching of other minerals. The ore is composed of fine grained pyrolusite intergrown with fine grained hematite and locally containing extensively altered bixbyite and braunite. Thegangue mineral is mainly kaolin.The average grade, using a 15 per cent Mn cutoff, was 19 4 per cent Mn and 25·9 per cent Fe for a combined drill-proven, indicated, and inferred tonnage of 56,000,000 tonnes. The average depth of this mineralization from the surface is 11 m. Using a cutoff grade of 20 per cent Mn the average grade was 24·6 per cent Mn and 23·0 per cent Fe for a combined tonnage of 12,000,000 tonnes to an average depth of 8 m.The substantial drop in reserves occurs because a high proportion of the mineralized material contains less than 20 per cent Mn.It was shown that whereas the lower grade ore, despite erratic fluctuations in grade, could be beneficiated to specification grade by crushing, screening, and conductivity ore sorting, the higher grade ore could be beneficiatedto specification grade by crushing and screening only. The utilization of the higher grade ore was considered to constitute a more viable operation.There is potential for high grade manganese ore to be discovered in the Ripon Hills area at the contact of chert breccia and underlying dolomite.

The application of cost updating with the aid of cost indices is reviewed with particular regard to the mining industry. Examples of applicable cost index series are included with values given for the last ten years. The compilation of the indices is discussed with consideration given to the possible sources of error inherent in their application to specific mining cost problems.

This study explores two evolving 3D surveying technologies, photogrammetry and laser scanning, and applies them to deformation monitoring of rock faces and mine highwalls. A quantitative analysis focused on 3D coordinate determination is performed. Furthermore, a qualitative assessment directed at the practicality and viability of each system operating near a rock face or in a mining operation is undertaken to reveal one systemÆs deficiencies over the other. Two photogrammetric and four laser scanning surveys aimed at optimising accuracy and precision within a short period of data acquisition are conducted on the rock face at Organ Pipes National Park, Keilor, Victoria. The accuracy and repeatability of each survey is determined using a combination of iWitness photogrammetric, and Cyclone laser scanning software. The 3D coordinates of targets placed on the rock face are determined by triangulation and resection principles within a bundle adjustment. The coordinates determined by each system are then compared in a 3D transformation. Controlled deformation conditions are established to determine the precision to which each system can detect movement in the rock face. An object of known dimensions is placed on the rock face to simulate deformation. The relative orientation of images taken for the pre- and post-deformation photogrammetric surveys provide an overall 3D point accuracy of 1.255 mm and 1.804 mm respectively. A 3D transformation shows discrepancies of less than ¦22 mm (RMS) between the geometry of the photogrammetric and laser scanning models. Both systems are able to detect the simulated deformation to a precision of 50 mm. This work also identifies how to obtain millimetre accuracy for 3D coordinate determination of rock faces, thereby providing a quality data set for surveyors, geotechnical engineers and mine geologists. Photogrammetry is shown to be a mobile, time and cost-effective technique that is more amenable to mining operations than terrestrial laser scanning. However, both systems demonstrate that they are capable of detecting movements that may lead to failures in the rock face, and possibly endangering human life. The implications are significant for surveyors, geotechnical engineers and mine geologists working in mining operations where enhanced safety conditions, increased productivity and lower operational costs are important considerations.
