The orientation and location of the hydraulic legs are two very important parameters for the design of shield supports in longwall mining. Studies have shown that leg orientations and locations of a support determine the magnitude, orientation and location of the resultant support resistance which in turn affects the efficiency of the support and the ability to prevent premature roof falls in the face area. Therefore, there is a need to determine the best combination of orientation and location of the hydraulic legs for each type of shield support under various geological conditions. This paper attempts to evaluate, first, the individual role of each parameter (orientation or location) and then to determine their integrating functions in terms of ground control employing finite element analysis. Three types of shield support (2-leg and 4-leg shields and 4-leg chock shield) with various combination of the parameters are simulated and their effects are discussed. The optimum design for each parameter for each support type under various geological conditions is also discussed and recommended.

Porgera mine is 95 per cent owned by Barrick Gold Corporation. It is located at an altitude of 2200–2700 m above sea level in the Enga province of Papua New Guinea and produces approximately 460 000 oz per annum with a proven and probable reserve of 6.2 Moz. The refractory ore is ground in a conventional semi-autogenous grinding and ball mill circuit. After the gravity gold is recovered, the slurry is floated, oxidised in the autoclaves and then leached. This paper will focus on the flotation circuit and the recent upgrade of the control system. The five interdependent flotation circuits were challenging for operations to control as they dealt with variable grade, throughput and circulating loads, as well as the physical limitations of the equipment. With the installation of 18 Portage Froth Characterization® (PFC) cameras, the plant’s operation has been converted from a level-control based strategy that was focused on individual cells to one that targets grade and recovery control across the entire circuit. Variability in feed and the corresponding launder issues were addressed with a unique site initiative of deflector plates to indicate filling level. Non-linear closed loop control was implemented directly in the DeltaV Distributed Control System (DCS) using Portage Advantage Regulatory Control (PARC) algorithms and optimised with AwaRE advanced controllers. The most noticeable benefits achieved with the upgrade include improved flotation gold recovery, consistent flotation sulfur grade and autoclave performance. An important aspect of the project evaluation process is the achievement of a clear and quantitative understanding of the primary drivers influencing project value and risk. A business scenario-based approach is required to ensure that the project meets value and risk hurdles over the short, medium and longer term. Adopting an optimising approach can aid significantly in the development of a project concept into a business that is optimal and sustainable in the longer term. Through the application of case studies, based on work performed with various mining organisations during the last five years, this paper will demonstrate how project value and robustness can be optimised. Experience has demonstrated that applying this approach results in significant value improvements and risk reduction û primarily by application of a rigorous, fact-based analysis and optimisation process that rapidly increases management team understanding and insight of key driver of value and risk.

Regulations on the emission of particulates from sinter plant stacks are becoming increasingly stringent and reducing these emissions by improving gas cleaning systems is a significant cost to the sinter plants. This paper describes an investigation into the emission of particulate matter from an iron ore sinter bed during the sintering of a Japanese Steel Mill (JSM) style ore blend in a 300 mm diameter pot grate test facility. Several techniques were trialled to determine a reliable method to sample the quantity of dust emitted and determine the mechanism of dust emission from the sinter bed. The nature of the dust was also examined using chemical and size analysis as well as optical and scanning electron microscopy. The paper discusses the techniques used to carry out the program as well as results on dust loading measured during sintering and the nature of the dust captured.

This paper describes how specific technical and regulatory issues related to water management have been dealt with at Anglo AmericanÆs Moranbah North mine. It compiles the collection of practices that have been implemented since 2010 in response to climatic and regulatory drivers. Operations must continually evolve as they face emerging challenges. For Moranbah North mine, one key challenge is the integration of its mine water system to that of its new neighbouring mine Grosvenor. The commitment to ongoing improvement has placed the mine in a good position to face this particular challenge.Water-related risks were identified then mitigated by technical practices, which have focused on improving underground water management, increasing storage capacity and installing a state-of-the-art control system for the management of water on-site and for releases of mine-affected water to the environment. These practices are supported by an extensive monitoring and audit system that provides confidence in the reporting of activities and outcomes. Tunnel excavation may induce adverse effects on nearby existing structures/foundations in urban areas. Accurate prediction of tunnelling effects on pile foundations of nearby structures in the urban environment poses a major challenge during design. Several studies have been undertaken to understand the mechanisms of the soil-tunnel-pile interaction, which focused only on influence of tunnelling on nearby existing building and foundations. However, effect of pile loading on existing tunnels did not receive enough research attention so far. So it is essential to measure the response of existing tunnel-lining due to loading on newly constructed pile to assess to the safety against the additional forces/moment caused by pile loading and to evaluate the critical distance for the proposed construction of any structures from the tunnel location. This paper presents result of three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis carried out in ABAQUS to investigate the effects of pile loading on existing tunnels embedded in cohesive soil. It is found that the effects on tunnel lining depend on horizontal separation distance between pile and tunnel as well as location/elevation of pile tip with respect to tunnel location.

As the global demand for metal values expands, it becomes increasingly important to create more sustainable mining operations. Consequently, considerable research and technology development is required to produce processes which are both more energy efficient and have a minimal environmental impact. One potential technology is the utilisation of microwave pre-treatment to reduce the energy requirements in comminution. Microwaves can preferentially heat the valuable mineral phases in an ore and the resulting differential thermal expansion leads to the formation of microfractures along the grain boundaries. As a result of the preferential heating, ore competency is reduced, mineral liberation is enhanced, a coarser grind size can be employed, and plant throughput can be increased. Furthermore, microwave pre-treatment can be combined with advanced ore sorting, to decrease the quantity of gangue material processed downstream and hence reduce tailings production. Previous studies on the microwave treatment of ores over the last 30 years have mainly been limited to low power bench-scale studies and there is a paucity of information on pilot and/or commercial scale studies. In the present research, the microwave heating behaviours of over 40 ores have been studied at the bench-scale. These results were used to generate a database, from which a unique classification system was developed. This system was used to rank the amenability of any given ore for microwave pre-treatment. This knowledge can be employed to predict the performance of the ores in the high-power pilot scale tests and thus can be used as a pre-screening tool. The effects of high-power microwave pre-treatment on grindability and liberation were reported. Additionally, the ore sorting potential was evaluated using a combination of X-ray transmission (XRT) and microwave infrared (MW/IR).

This paper describes in detail the controlled blasting adopted and the measurements undertaken for the successful excavation of large twin tunnels under a shallow cover for a six-lane highway project in India. The tunnels are D-shaped, each 15 m in diameter, and the cover between the tunnels and the existing railway track was about 14 m. These twin tunnel tubes were characterised by two separate three-lane carriageways for each direction of traffic, and were planned with about 25 m of reinforced cement concrete (RCC) portals at the entrance and exit of the tunnels. The major challenge of the project was the blasting of tunnels in rock below an operating railway line. As the tunnels approached the area below the railway line, the ground vibrations were monitored vertically above the blasting faces and on the railway track sleepers. Vibration intensities between those generated from tunnel blasting and those from the movement of the trains were compared, and it was found that the vibrations from blasting were lower than those from the moving trains. Though the permissible level of ground vibration based on the Indian Standard (IS) code happens to be 70 mm/s, the maximum charge per delay was calculated restricting this limit to 50 mm/s. This ensured that the vibrations in the vicinity of the railway tracks never exceeded the prescribed limit of 70 mm/s. The surface ground settlement before and after the blasts were also measured using an optical levelling instrument, which confirmed that there was no significant impact on the surface movements due to blasting. Extensometer readings inside the tunnels showed that there was no deformation in the tunnel. The efficient and profit-maximising daily and long-term management of the Vera Nancy resource depends on decisions based upon assay data. This paper examines the range of sample sources, the methods of sample collection, assay techniques and Quality Assurance used by the mine. The orebody has a relatively low nugget effect for a gold mine (around 25 per cent) and this greatly assists in reducing sampling error and producing reliable assay data for production decision-making. Reconciliation between mine and back-calculated mill grades generally sees the mine under-calling mill grades by around four per cent.

McKinnons open pit gold mine, located within the Cobar Basin in New South Wales, is characterised by complex mineralisation controlled by the intersection of steep faults in the hinge zone of an anticline. Resource estimation using indicator variography and indicator kriging was based on RC drilling on 25 in sections together with grade control RC drilling on 12 in by 12 in and 6 m by 6 in patterns. Rigorous sampling and checking procedures were used to verify the reliability of the drill hole data. Blast hole data was used to assist grade control in defining ore block boundaries.

Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Pty Ltd is currently developing the 'Super Pit' gold mine in the mining area known as the Golden Mile adjacent to the city of KalgoorlieBoulder, Western Australia. The presence of numerous abandoned mine workings and complex structural geology has required considerable geotechnical input into the determination of the optimum pit slope geometries for both interim and ultimate pit slopes. Slope design is based on detailed site investigation and stability analysis which is balanced with historical operational experience. This paper discusses the process of determining the optimum pit slope angles for each of the stages of the west wall of the 'Super Pit'. The risks associated with slope instability are discussed for each stage.

Roy Hill is a large iron ore mining, processing, railing and port operation in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Since delivering its first shipments to customers in December 2015, Roy Hill has quickly achieved a 60 Mtpa production rate of lump and fines products. The process plant, principally consisting of wet scrubbing, screening and de-sanding unit processes, was expanded from early 2020 to include operation of a Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation (WHIMS) Plant. The WHIMS Plant treats tailings to recover approximately 4 Mtpa of ultra-fine (nominally -150 μm) high-grade hematitic concentrate which, after dewatering, is blended into the fines product. Unlike typical hematite concentrates, which consist largely of dense particles with smooth surfaces, the WHIMS concentrate is characterised by very finely microporous hematitic/goethitic particles, reflecting the overall characteristics of the Roy Hill deposit. Detailed test work has been conducted in collaboration with CSIRO to characterise the WHIMS concentrate in terms of its physical and mineralogical properties, and to determine its influence on the granulation and sintering performance of Roy Hill fines – from fundamental/lab-scale and sinterpot perspectives. The results demonstrate that blending of the high-grade hematitic Roy Hill WHIMS concentrate into the fines product can maintain overall sinter quality and positively influence granulation and sinter melt formation, as well as Fe grade.

Existing practical laboratory tests for comparative strength determination of commercial explosives consist of the lead block test, the ballistic mortar test, the bubble test etc. These tests are carried out in material with quite different properties compared to rock. The theoretical performance potentials of commercial explosives are traditionally described by weight-strength (WS). Some explosive producers use the Langefors formula for weight-strength calculation, where also the gas volume is considered. Neither the theoretical nor the practical methods for determination of explosive performance such as the above, give good enough prediction of fragmentation and heave in rock blasting. For these reasons a project was started for the purpose of finding a small scale test method which predicts how different explosive parameters affect fragmentation and heave. Small scale tests were carried out by using 50 cm cubical blocks, mainly of concrete, but a few also of rock. All blocks were blasted in a steel cylinder with a diameter of 1.2 meters. The velocity of detonation was monitored, and the velocity of fragments was derived from their time of arrival at the steel wall, which was registered by accelerometers. After blasting all fragments were screened. The charge diameter was 22 mm and the amount of explosive 78 grammes, resulting in a specific charge of 0.62 kg/m3. Explosive properties such as energy, gas, VOD and density were systematically changed.The results presented in this paper show how fragmentation and heave systematically change when the explosive properties like energy, gas, VOD and density are systematically changed. The results from the small scale tests are compared to full scale tests carried out in tunnel blasting, and during summer 1990 also in bench blasting.

In 2002 the Argyle Diamond Mine upgraded the process plantÆs recrush circuit to include a High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR), or High Pressure Rolls Crushers (HPRC) as they are termed in the diamond industry. HPGR have generated considerable interest over the last decade, though there are still technical/processing unknowns to its effectiveness as a primary diamond ore crusher.The upgrade of the Recrush circuit at Argyle Diamonds has gone a long way to answering some of the key questions, and thus it has reduced the unknowns to a level more acceptable to the industry.This paper focuses on the results from the HPRC at Argyle, in particular the performance of the studded wear surfaces, comparison of energy efficiency against traditional quaternary cone crushers and the resultant increased liberation. Issues that have arisen, including edge wear of the studded surfaces, will be discussed and the steps taken to reduce this issue are presented.

It is well known that the high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) can only be operated efficiently under choke feeding conditions in which a material bed is built up between the rollers to ensure interparticle breakage. By increasing the fines amount in the material bed up to a specific level with the recycling load, a uniform material bed is created and higher pressure gradient along the roller width is obtained which results in compact flakes including more fines. Extensive test work has been carried out with an industrial HPGR unit grinding cement clinker in a cement plant in Turkey. During the test work the recycling load of the circuit was changed to achieve different ratios to the fresh feed rate in order to identify the effect of the recycling load on the circuit performance. Six different tests were performed with the circuit at steady state. For each test, samples were collected from HPGR fresh feed and discharge, and total feed, then the particle size distributions of the samples were determined and mass balances around the circuit were calculated. The conclusion was that the reduction ratio of the HPGR increased with increase in recycling load. The flake densities showed the same trend with more compacted flakes being produced for higher recycling loads.

The distribution ratio of Pb (LPb s/m) between three types of slags (FeOx–SiO2, CaO–FeOx and FeOx– CaO–SiO2) and molten copper after equilibrium was measured at 1300°C and oxygen partial pressure (pO2) of 10-10–10-6 atm. Results showed that for FeOx–SiO2 slag, the LPb s/m increased from 0.024 to 2.57 with pO2 increased from 10-10 to 10-6 atm. The LPb s/m with CaO–FeOx slag was lower than the FeOx–SiO2 slag at the same pO2, ranging between 0.015 and 0.53. Using the FeOx–CaO– SiO2 slag generated LPb s/m values (0.02–1.6) in between. The oxygen partial pressure in the investigated range had no obvious effect on the activity coefficient of PbO (γPbO) which was averagely 0.44, 1.70 and 0.71 for FeOx–SiO2, CaO–FeOx and FeOx–CaO–SiO2 slags, respectively. The increases in the (CaO+MgO)/SiO2 mass ratio of the FeOx–CaO–SiO2 slag induced the decrease in the LPb s/m and the increase in the γPbO value. However, the variation in the Fe/SiO2 mass ratio didn’t exert obvious effects.

The usual focus of papers on fatty acid collector action in non-sulfide flotation is on the adsorption of the carboxylate and/or neutral molecule species at the mineral-solution interface. Little attention is paid as to whether or not the solution conditions correspond to true solutions, micellar and other self-assembly objects or precipitates. Our examination of the solution chemistry of the important fatty acid collector, oleic acid, has revealed that many, if not most investigators set their experimental conditions to be in micellar or precipitate domains while arguing, often by implication, that they have only solute species present. We have investigated the equilibrium solution domains usually encountered in studies of oleic acid flotation of such minerals as barite, calcite and fluorite. The alkaline earth-fatty acid and liquid oleic acid precipitate phases exert a strong influence on the solution chemistry, a fact not often appreciated in many studies.

The Emily Ann nickel mine is owned and operated by LionOre Mining International Ltd. The deposit was discovered during 1997 and is blind, concealed beneath 25 m of transported cover and a further 100 m of unmineralised Archaean felsic rocks. Nickel sulfide mineralisation is hosted predominantly in strongly deformed, altered and metamorphosed Archaean komatiitic ultramafic rocks. Subordinate felsic-hosted, remobilised mineralisation is also present. Mining of ore commenced during late-2001. Since the early days of exploration drilling, through feasibility delineation drilling and subsequent mining, a geological model involving thrusting and folding of a komatiitic-hosted nickel sulfide deposit has been an evolving theme. Development of appropriate mine geology procedures, including detailed mapping, significantly increased the confidence of mine-site geology and engineering staff in the geological model and improved operational efficiencies during start-up. This also allowed the engineering and mining team to develop a tolerance for the large fluctuations in daily production grade, with an understanding that budgeted production targets, on a level-by-level basis, were achievable. This paper describes the development of the current interpretation of the deposit and emphasises the importance of a sound understanding of deposit geology. The direct benefits at Emily Ann included improvements in drill targeting, resource estimation and mine planning.
