The use of concentrated solar flux for high temperature metallurgical applications is a wellresearched area with several reported literatures on solar calcination and metal oxide reduction. This paper presents two such processes with potential to reduce the carbon footprint from ironmaking through using concentrated solar flux. The first process involves solar flux incorporation to the recently developed lime-magnetite pellet (LMP) route of magnetite ore agglomeration. The second process is a hybrid solar-smelting route for iron ore-coal composite pellets that utilises solar flux to provide process heat. Both the concepts of solar agglomeration and solar smelting process were investigated using a solar simulator-hybrid reactor set-up at Swinburne University of Technology. Results from solar agglomeration experiments at 950°C suggested no change in the reaction mechanism of the LMPs under solar irradiation compared to electrical heating. The percentage and morphology of the primary phases (mainly CaFe3O5) appeared similar for both solar and electric heated LMPs. The solar-smelting of magnetite concentrate-lignite coal composite pellets at 1130°C showed a maximum metallisation of 55 per cent after 1.5 hrs of reaction. The solar-smelt process has about 25 to 35 per cent lower CO2 emission compared to the blast furnace ironmaking. Technoeconomic analysis of implementing a CST facility in an existing composite pellet process suggested a payback period of about ten years at a heliostat cost of $A100/m2 and natural gas cost of A$10/GJ. The economics of CST implementation can be further enhanced by decreasing the thermal losses from the heliostat field and reactor.

Thick clay tills below potash mine tailings and brine ponds are important natural barriers protecting fresh water aquifers in Saskatchewan. Centrifuge modelling was applied to assess geochemical processes and impacts of dilute brine (0.1 M NaCl) migration through clay till core samples obtained from non saline, unoxidised clay till at a mine site. At accelerated gravity of 876 + g, during each day of centrifuge modelling, flow driven through a 52 mm length core simulated transport through a 45 m thick clay over ~2100 years. Hydraulic conductivity, monitored continuously before and during brine permeation, was low and relatively constant (8.5 + 10-12 m/s), confirming that confining stresses prevent permeability increase. Core density and porosity measurements confirmed that reactive transport occurred under realistic in situ conditions. Breakthrough (defined by C/C0 = 0.5) of non-reactive Cl- occurred at 25 days. The slight delay for Na+ breakthrough, associated with small increases in Ca2+ and Mg2+ concentrations in the effluent were attributed to ion exchange, but carbonate reactions were relatively unimportant. Cation exchange analysis of core samples was inconclusive without corrections for porewater Na+ and carbonate dissolution. Geochemical processes that were observed during centrifuge modelling were successfully simulated using the 1D geochemical transport code PHREEQC. Solute transport was dominated by diffusion with limited ion exchange to delay Na+ migration. Brine would not break through a 45 m thick clay for tens of thousands of years. Based on these findings, the thick clay till at this site, if laterally extensive and undisturbed by drilling activity, is likely to act as an effective natural barrier to vertical brine migration over the long term.

The $2.5 billion EastLink project is a 39 km tollway and includes twin three-lane, 1.5 km long, undrained driven tunnels with cross passages every 120 m. The hard rock tunnels are being built to avoid passing the motorway through the Mullum Mullum Valley and help preserve the unique flora and fauna in the area. The design of the permanent concrete lining and waterproofing system for the EastLink tunnels was both innovative and practical, to meet the demanding environmental and production constraints of AustraliaÆs largest road project. This paper describes several key aspects of the tunnel design and construction, including: design of fully tanked, permanent concrete tunnel linings for the main tunnels and cross passages to withstand 37 m head of water pressure in combination with potential rock loading in the future;optimisation of the tunnel shape to minimise the amount of reinforcement required and the design of special welded mesh which was developed within manufacturing constraints;100 year design life and durability considerations in every aspect and detail of the design including concrete mix design and stray current mitigation;development of a precast invert solution for the main tunnel permanent concrete lining to enable faster lining construction and to minimise risks to the tunnel membrane associated with fixing reinforcement and construction traffic;development of prefabricated reinforcement details for the junctions between the main tunnels and the cross passages to enable faster construction and minimise risks to the membrane associated with fixing reinforcement; andincorporating the tunnel drainage sump at the lowest cross passage in the alignment, resulting in deep excavation to satisfy the required storage volumes for drainage.

Models of the genesis of existing ore oodles and targetting of exploration for new mines are greatly enhanced by an-understanding of the plate tectonic environment existing at the time of mineral emplacement. In areas of recent or active tectonism, a study of the present-day crustal and upper mantle structure is an obvious starting point in unravelling the evolution of the accessible upper crust. Bougainville is the northern-most island in the Solomon Islands arc. A 7km deep trench almost 100km off its western coast marks the commencement of subduction of the Solomon Sea plate beneath the Pacific plate. As outlined by the seismicity, the subducted crustal slab under the southern half of Bougainville reaches the axis of the island at about 100km depth, from which point it dips near vertically another 300km into the upper mantle. Large surface blasts at the Bougainville Copper Mine at Panguna, Bougainville, Papua New Guinea were used to derive an unreversed upper crustal profile of the island. The crust appears to be relatively simple, being comprised of a 5km deep layer with a P-wave velocity of 4.5km/sec, overlying a l0km thick layer with a P-wave velocity of 7.2km/sec. Constraints on the 15km mantle depth were provided by the identification of both P to and S to P phase conversions of seismic waves from local shallow earthquakes at the Moho boundary. An upper mantle velocity of 7.95(¦ 0.15) km/sec was measured from travel times of selected shallow earthquakes along the strike of the island arc.

The common notion that the Box Hole Bore mineralization represents a variant of the Mississippi Valley type, has not been supported by the present investigation. Most of the common characteristics of Mississippi Valley type, namely 1. saturated saline brines; 2. low temperature domain; 3. mineralization in intraformational breccias and collapsed anticlinal structures; 4. hydrocarbon-rich or foetid carbonates, and 5. very simple geochemistry seem not to be applicable. The Box Hole Bore mineralization features: 1. moderately saline brines (18% NaCl); 2. very high temperature (495¦-520¦C) and low density brines, of critical vapour:water ratio and low pressure of formation (700 bars); 3. mineralization confined by faults and ex- tending laterally into carbonates of high pore volume such as stromatolitic dolo- mites; 4. ore environment characterized by oxidizing conditions, such as ferruginous carbonate and silica sands of high energy environment (heavy mineral banding) and 5. more complex geochemistry than is normal for Mississippi Valley type deposits (copper sulphosalts, and appreciable silver content). Additionally, the ore has un- usual textures formed by the replacement of carbonates and barite by large idiomorphic galena crystals. The pressure and temperature domains of the Box Hole Bore mineralization indicate post- Devonian emplacement and local high heat flow, possibly related to the Alice Springs Orogeny. Because of high lead and zinc trace element con- tents (100-600 ppm) of the carbonates, even out- side mineralized areas, it is possible that the mineralizing fluids have derived their metal con- tent from a local source, possibly aided by evap- oritic concentrations of the tidal to supratidal sequences. The new model for Box Hole Bore gives treater importance to the confining faults.

In order to meet the increasing demand for coal for their Newcastle Steel Works, the Broken Hill Pty. Co. Ltd., on June 5, 1937, approved of a scheme to sink a tunnel to the Victoria Seam at their Burwood Colliery. This seam was virgin at this locality and lay nominally horizontal at a depth of 320ft. vertical from the surface.For the purpose of despatch of the coal produced it was decided that the tunnel be equipped with a rubber belt conveyor system.This was a comparatively new departure in Australia, and, indeed, was one of the first installations of its kind in the world, designed to raise coal from considerable depth by this means. Later the tunnel was extended to the Borehole Seam, which lay nominally horizontal at a vertical depth of 600ft. from the surface. The whole installation is the subject of this paper.In planning a project of this kind, consideration had to be given to the following:-1. Location of tunnel with regard to existing surface railway sidings and shafts.2. Ultimate tonnage required.3. Width and construction of belt.4. Speed of belt.5. Inclination of belts.6. Limnological processes are often overlooked when trying to assess the long-term water quality of pit lakes. It is essential to deal with these aspects, since they determine the geochemical and redox conditions around the submerged reactive rocks. Underground mining at East Sullivan (northwestern Quebec, Canada) stopped in 1966. Two adjacent stopes, 91 and 106 m deep, were left open to the surface, with roughly circular apertures of about 7700 and 18 000 m2. Water filling of the two glory holes went on over three decades and overflow began in 1999. Surface water pHs values were near neutrality as late as 1994 (6.3 - 7.0) but had become acidic by 1999 (2.6 - 3.5). Limnological processes were investigated in late-1999 and early-2000, with temperature measurements at 1 m intervals and sampling of the water columns before and after the late fall density inversions. A strong chemocline-thermocline was observed at 15 m. Above the chemocline, the water had low pH (3.2), no alkalinity, and low Na, Ca and sulfate. Below the chemocline, the concentrations of these parameters and the pH increased, with pH at 5.5 - 6. Consistent with the low pH values present in the upper 15 m, the concentrations of Al, Cd, Cu, and Zn were high near surface, and decreased below the chemocline. Dissolved oxygen concentrations as well as Eh decreased with increasing depth. Alkalinity integrated over the entire water column below the chemocline was at least six times larger than the acidity inferred from Fe2+ and Fe3+ concentrations. The temperature survey showed that seasonal density inversions do occur in the water column. The inversions do not involve the entire water body, since the surface to depth ratio is too small for a complete overturn. Oxygen from surface waters is carried to the bottom where it oxidises sulfides, until its depletion. Residual Fe2+, stable under anoxic conditions, is displaced upward by the next dense water incursion. It eventually reaches the thermocline, but only after many successive incursions. There, its oxidation to Fe3+ allows hydrolysis, which consumes dissolved and wall-rock alkalinity. It is only in 1999 that alkalinity was finally exhausted and that the pH shifts to acid values. The low pHs in the surface waters allow a build up of Fe3+ and Al3+, and desorption of metals from colloids. Buffering is assumed to be controlled by wall-rock oxyhydroxides in surface waters, and by carbonate minerals in the bottom waters. Because the seasonal overturns are far from being complete, the large amounts of alkalinity acquired from the wall-rock in the bottom waters cannot balance the acidity of near surface waters. Hence the surface water is acidic.

HISTORY OF PROCESS DEVELOPMENT The manufacture of coke from coal commenced at the beginning of the 17th century by heaping coal into circular mounds in the open, covering with earth, clay or ash and slowly burning the coal in the mounds to produce a heap of coke. Naturally the process was slow in production rate with low coke recovery due to the loss of that part of the coal which was completely burnt to ash. As a natural consequence of this initial carbonisation method, a coke oven design was developed so that the coking chamber, which was constructed of brick, was circular in plan, cylindrical in section with a dome shaped roof - similar in shape to the original coal mounds. As the shape of the chamber was similar to the old dome shaped beehive, the ovens were called beehive ovens. The ovens were built in long single or double rows with retaining walls between each oven and as such were known as a battery of beehive coke ovens. In these early beehive ovens, coal was charged from hand wheeled tubs into a hole into the top of each oven, hand- levelled with a rake and the oven side opening sealed with bricks and clay except for some small holes in the opening to admit limited quantity of air for combustion. Coking commenced by the heat retained in the brickwork from the previous charge. The gases evolved from the coal, together with the admitted air, were partially burnt inside the oven to supply the heat for carbonisation and the surplus gases were burnt to waste at the top charging hole. The heat from this gaseous combustion inside the oven together with the reflected heat from the brickwork of the arched roof of the oven allowed carbonisation of the coal charge to proceed from its surface slowly downwards to the floor of the oven. At the end of the coking cycle (usually 4 or 5 days) when there was no more evolution of gases, as indicated by diminishing gas flame and a drop in oven temperature, the brickwork of the oven opening was removed. The coke was then quenched by inserting a pipe with spray holes to spray water over the coke charge in the oven after which the coke was raked from the oven. The work of charging and levelling the coal, bricking and removal of oven opening, quenching and raking out the coke all required manual labour. As these ovens only carbonised a 5 to 7 ton charge of coal per cycle of 4 to 5 days, to produce 3 to 41/2 ton of marketable coke, the labour required per ton of coke was high.

Acidic and metal-rich waters have been discharging from Sullivan Mine, West Coast, New Zealand since the closure of the mine during the early- 1990s. This has resulted in a decrease in pH from a background of 4.5 to 2.8 and an increase in metallic elements in nearby Rapid Stream. In addition to the chemical effects on Rapid Stream, a study of freshwater macro-invertebrates revealed the absence of most biota downstream from the discharge. An attempt is being made to use the Sullivan Mine as a case study of problem and remediation analysis.

This paper describes the mining methods and strategy used to extract the 5 Orebody crown pillar at the Isa Lead Mine over the past five years. The bulk of the crown pillar was extracted by the use of sublevel open stope method. An uphole bench stope was mined to scavenge the remaining ore. Geomechanical issues associated with the crown pillar extraction are described. Stope sizes were gradually increased on a stope by stope basis. This has allowed the maximising of ore recovery while relevant risks were managed. The principles in designing ore rib pillars against various types of fill materials are also described.

At 11 am Monday 8 September 1997, the successful detonation of the 5/9 Mass Blast at Pasminco - Elura was signified by the subsiding of æMt KevinÆ (a 15 m high earth fill mound). The blast was in response to earlier mine subsidence, which holed through to the surface affecting future stability of underground workings. The blast was a first for Elura which fires small tonnages regularly to avoid rapid oxidation of the ore. This paper discusses the strategy and the considerable planning that went into EluraÆs first blast of this magnitude in order to succeed first time round.

Silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminium (SFCA) is a bonding phase in the iron ore sinter. The phase transition upon melting of SFCA was investigated with Differential Scanning Calorimetry and Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope. The initial melting of SFCA occurred at 1183.2°C and a massive melting was found at around 1351.1–1358.2°C. A phase transition-melting was investigated at 1476.5–1478.7°C. The liquid phase was composed of immiscible phases. The present results would be utilised to design a new iron ore sinter for better processing performance in a hydrogenenriched ironmaking process.

This paper discusses the implementation of an underground rail haulage system during a major expansion of the Olympic Dam mine in 1998. The factors affecting the selection of rail haulage are discussed and details are provided on the rail system, which is designed to transport more than 10.5 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa). The reliability of the system during commissioning is discussed, including the decision to manufacture a ædummyÆ locomotive in order to keep the system operational. Finally, reliability improvements made both during and after commissioning are discussed with comments provided on the effectiveness of the system as it operates today.

In 1985 a 2.5-tonne top blown rotary converter was installed in the silver refinery at Cominco's Trail Operation to carry out the final cupellation of burndown metal to Dore metal. The furnace is fired with an oxygen-natural gas lance which is capable of achieving a variety of furnace conditions, varying from reducing to highly oxidizing. Reaction rates are about 4 times greater than using conventional cupel furnaces. The faster reaction rates improve productivity and reduce in-process precious metal tie-up. The furnace is also used to reduce litharge slag for bismuth recovery.

The excavation of sandstone of generally medium strength for the Liverpool Link Line by Dosco Mark 2A Roadheaders has demonstrated the versatility and good performance of road- headers in suitable rock formations. A description is given of the strata traversed by the tunnels together with descriptions of equipment and crews, excavation sequences, operating difficulties and the results achiev- ed. In addition tunnel construction is des- cribed for a difficult section where there was only O.Sm clearance between invert and a four lane vehicular tunnel below, and O.5m clearance between tunnel crown and a century old sewer above.

Reclamation field trials commenced in 1985, two years before the granting of the Mining Licence. The level of pasture production on varying soil depths (0 cm, 5 cm, 15 cm and 25 cm) overlying both tailings and oxidised waste overburden was assessed. After seven years, the rate of increase of N, C, P and S, losses of S and P and pH changes were investigated on the plots where grass seed was sown into bare tailings. It was determined that on these plots it would take approximately 24 years to reach the original carbon and nitrogen levels at the mine site.

The smelting operation associated with the production of aluminium has a voracious appetite for high grade carbon materials. Within the technical parameters of the Hall-Heroult process, the reduction of alumina to one tonne of aluminium results in the consumption of nearly 0.5 tonne of carbon at the anode of an electrolytic cell. This paper reviews the role of carbon and the basic quality requirements of carbon products in the production of aluminium, discusses the effects of certain physical and chemical specifications on smelting and related operations, and examines recent trends in the quality of these raw materials.

A study of two laterite profiles developed on a serpentinite near Rockhampton, shows that loss of Si02 and MgO results in the relative concentration of Fe203, A1203 and a number of minor elements. Serpentine is broken down to form montmorillonite, goethite, quartz and kaolinite. Enrichment of nickel occurs, and it is shown that the element is mainly associated with montmorillonite and serpentine. The rate of precipitation of ferric iron as ammonium jarosite, NH4.Fe3(SO4)2(0H)6 from acidic solutions near 100¦C, was found to increase with weight of jarosite seed crystals, and with concentration of ammonium ion, but to decrease with increasing acidity. The particle size of the product crystals was larger at low sulphate concentrations and at high ammonium concentrations.
