The Dampier Port Upgrade was completed in 2007 and is the largest project in Rio Tinto Iron Ore's expansion program. The project doubled Dampier Port's iron ore shipping capacity over a five year period. Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM) was appointed by Rio Tinto as the Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management (EPCM) contractor to manage Phase A and Phase B of the Dampier Port Upgrade. The aim of the project was to increase the Dampier Port capacity from 74 to 140 million tonnes per annum (Mt/a). This increase in shipping capacity tripled the capacity of the Parker Point facility from 34 to 94 Mt/a, whilst the East Intercourse Island facility increased from 40 to 46 Mt/a. The Dampier port remained fully operational throughout construction and achieved record yearly export tonnages over the period of the project. The $US1.4B project was completed ahead of schedule, on budget and with an outstanding safety record. Significantly the project team set an industry benchmark by achieving five million man-hours Lost Time Injury (LTI) free. The project has been recognised by the Engineers Australia 2008 Western Australian Engineering Excellence awards as category winner in resources and the overall winner in WA, and went on to win a National Engineering Excellence award. This paper provides an overview of the EPCM project management and an insight into some of the key drivers that have delivered this outstanding project.

A major challenge for closure planning at mining operations below the water table is evaporation from final void pit lakes and concentration of salts, which can impact on downstream groundwater (and surface water) flows and quality. Where such impacts are deemed unacceptable, the closure approach that is often adopted is to infill the final voids with waste rock to above the pre-mining water table to prevent the development of a pit lake and subsequent evaporative losses. BHP Billiton Iron OreÆs Marillana Creek (Yandi) mining operations face these issues. The orebody is a channel iron deposit that forms the major aquifer in the region, which will be completely mined as a series of elongated open pits over tens of kilometres. The major constraint on mine closure planning was the stripping ratio of less than one, which means that there is insufficient waste rock to infill all areas to the pre-mining water table. Hydrogeological investigations and groundwater modelling indicated that standard mine closure approaches would result in pit void lakes becoming saline sinks unless the residual void geometry was optimised to minimise evaporation and maximise throughflow. The solution developed is a cost-effective long-term mine plan that meets all mine closure objectives, and involved:the selective infilling of all pits, largely using run-of-mine waste dumping with limited re-handling; the diversion of the major part of up-catchment creek flows around the mining operations to allow mining of the resource under Marillana Creek crossings, which in turn restricted overall aquifer recharge and reduced the elevation of the long-term water table; the diversion of some minor creek tributary flows into specific locations within the mine path to induce hydraulic gradients to maintain groundwater throughflow and water quality; and close integration of mine plan optimisation (mining and waste dumping schedules) with groundwater modelling scenarios to achieve acceptable environmental outcomes. This approach is designed to result in no reduction in downstream surface water flows or quality, maintenance of adequate downstream groundwater throughflow to support groundwater dependent ecosystems, and no reduction in the beneficial use status of the downstream groundwater resource.

Detailed observations were made for two existing continuous miner and shuttlecar systems. A simple model for the shift average cycle consisted of three time components - delays, mining and transport. Cycle improvement and productivity improvement factors are derived and used to predict the theoretical improvement which the observed cycles could achieve. Various strategies of action ranging from short-term optimisation through to long-term planning for continuous haulage systems are evaluated. High potential for improvement is shown for a wide range of operating conditions. An overview is presented for systems, currently available or under active development, which can accept coal directly from continuous miners and offer continuous haulage to the surface. Systems are broadly classified as mechanical-roof mounted, mechanical-floor mounted and hydraulic transportation.

As a prelude to studying the sorption desorption and permeability behaviour of coal cores in a triaxial stressing rig using sorb- able gases, the air permeability of typical cores was measured. Lump coal samples were obtained from three gas-troubled collieries in Queensland and New South Wales. These were cored in the laboratory and a simple laboratory permeameter employed which accepted 38 x 40 mm cores in a thick rubber sheath. Air pressure of 500 kPa was applied outside the sheath to provide suitable sealing between the rubber and the coal. Differential driving pressures up to 100 kPa were employed and the air flow measured by displacement of water columns in inverted graduated cylinders. Flow measurements accurate to + 2% could thereby be achieved. Coal lumps were cored both parallel and perpen- dicular to the bedding plane, and were observed prior to measurement for any notable features, in particular for the presence of fissures. The Ravenswood Mine in North Queensland is the first gold mine developed by Carpentaria Gold Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of MIM Holdings Ltd. Carpentaria Exploration Pty Ltd began exploration at Ravenswood in 1978. However initial exploration of the main gold producing area (Buck Reef East) commenced in March 1987 when exploration rights to four key leases were secured. A rapid, co-ordinated exploration and development program produced gold from a heap leach operation nine months after the first costeans were dug at Buck Reef East. To treat higher grade ore found at depth in the Buck Reef East pit and the metallurgically more difficult Buck Reef West ore, a carbon in pulp plant was commissioned in May 1988. The mine is currently producing at a rate of approximately 40 000 ounces of gold per year. Ore at Ravenswood is hosted by hydrothermally altered diorites and tonalites of the Ravenswood Granodiorite complex. Alteration is controlled by planes of permeability formed by joints, shear zones and dilational breccias. The complex orebody geometry resulting from these controls required very detailed surface and drill exploration for adequate definition. Carpentaria's need for early cash flow meant that economic, mining and metallurgical considerations governed choices of exploration techniques, program timing, material and data collected. The initial reserve of 1.1 mt @ 2.87 g/t Au was defined by sectional polygonal methods. Grade control is based on geologic mapping and blast hole or channel sample assays. Ore is batched through the crusher and sampled to monitor grade control and mining performance. Minimal dilution has occurred. Gold content is greater than predicted by the reserve. Sprinkling of heaps commenced in November 1987. Changes have been made to the pad design and to the method of heap construction. Heap leach ore is treated at a rate of 400 000 tpa.

THE method of stope surveying as practised at the Mount Lyell Company's mines has been evolved out of the exigencies created by special conditions. It presents some novel features, and has proved effective for all requirements. All stope measurement work is brought under one complete system, to which office methods are standardized. Before proceeding to deal with the subject a brief description of the physical characteristics of the ore-bodies of each mine and the method of stoping will serve to show, cause ,for departure from ordinary survey practice.NORTH LYELL MINEThe ore-bodies of this mine occur on or near the conglomerate schist contact, and, being probably the result of replacements of both rocks, they rarely present any definite walls. It is usual for the payable material to merge into the respective countryrocks, and the limit of the occurrence is defined rather by assay value than by any distinct natural boundaries. The general configuration of these ore-bodies, therefore, is highly erratic both in horizontal and vertical section, so that, in order to obtain an accurate record of any occurrence, the measurement of the actual contour at short vertical intervals is essential.Stoping is carried out on a modification of the "rill." system, perhaps more properly described as "arched back" or "dome" stoping. Mullock rises are placed in as convenient positions as the erratic configuration of each ore-body will allow, and aroundthese rises the back is kept well arched, both longitudinally and transversely. Solar Salt, Lunar Ambitions I Bauerti The title of this paper is `Solar Salt, Lunar Ambitions'. It is largely the result of a lack of imagination and a tight deadline. I was seeking a catchy title to convey the image of being 'here' and wanting to get `there', with `there' being a long way away and our being held 'here' by powerful gravitational forces. I tried `Solar Salt, Lunar Landings', but that implied we had already reached `there' when, on reflection, we had not. A colleague suggested 'Solar Salt, Luna Park' which is a fun park in Sydney and, I must admit, there was appeal in the image of having embarked on a wild roller coaster ride with stomach-wrenching twists and turns and the only reward being a pair of sweaty palms, and a feeling of nausea. That's sometimes how it feels when you launch into change. In the end I settled for the more sedate `Lunar Ambitions'. It contained that suggestion of hope and continual striving which are central to the idea of best practice. I will discuss our experiences in this area shortly, but I would firstly like to provide some background to our business. The salt industry is steeped in history and tradition. As one learned commentator observed, common salt is 'a substance seemingly too ordinary to think about, yet it is the oldest of man's raw materials and the basis of some of his newest inventions' (Multhauf, 1978). From ancient times, salt was recognised as a key necessity of life and it has played a role in the rise and fall of governments throughout history. The Romans recognised its importance when they gave their soldiers money regularly to purchase salt, hence our modern word 'salary'. Today, while culinary use remains important, the main consumer of salt is the chemical industry (Figure 1).

Early theories of coal formation are outlined, with special emphasis on the arguments for allochthony and autochthony. Various aspects of the nature, growth, and decay of the characteristic vegetation of the brown coal peat moors, their conversion into coal, the origin of banding, and the influence of tectonics are discussed.A description of the banding in Victorian brown coals is followed by a discussion of their vitrain, fusain, and natural carbonized coal; and concludes with the nature of the coal resin and the possibilities of its extraction.The nature and derivation of inorganic matter in brown coal, based on Lessing's classification, is described. Assimilation of mineral substances in specific plants with variations due to environmental factorsare illustrated by analyses of present day trees. Consideration is then given to possible sources of salt, marcasite, and quartz in brown coal.It is shown that part of the inherent and extraneous ash may have been removed during and after coal formation. Widespread interest in reopening Victorian gold mines, regenerated by increased gold prices, has highlighted the technical problems prevailing. A combination of historical lease legislation, minimal recent mining activity, forms of mineralisation, high insurance rates and tortuous approval requirements for mining mean the potential investor assessing an old mine must address a wide range of technical problems. The requirements for establishment of ore reserves and attraction of capital for mine development are fundamental. Underground reef mining was historically generally on a small scale, and as mining on many fields ceased about the turn of the century, past geological and production records cannot be correlated to personal experience and comment. The impact of modern mining technology on future reef mining will be to reduce operating costs and significantly improve historic metallurgical recovery. Roth these are commensurate with increased capital costs. Workers compensation rates currently applicable in Victoria are many times higher than in other states, adding significantly to operating costs. Establishment of a pilot plant testing facility in central Victoria would provide an invaluable service in treating bulk samples essential for grade and recovery assessments of Victorian ores.

The main aim of the conference is to work towards improved useage of steelplant slags which have largely been considered waste mater- ials, This paper summarised investigations carried out on the suitability of air cooled blast furnace slag, blast furnace granulated slag and basic oxygen steelmaking slag as road base materials. All slag samples were obtained from the PortòKembla Works of Australian-Iron and Steel Pty Ltd. Since road making materials are increas- ingly being characterised by use of resilient moduli, the compressive strengths and resilient moduli were determined for road base of the following slags. 1 Air cooled crushed blast furnace slag 2 mixes of air cooled blast furnace slag, granulated slag, and lime 3 mixes of air cooled blast furnace slag,-granulated slag and basic oxygen steelmaking slag. Evaluation of a local dacite (dense medium grained igneous rock, classification rhyolite), generally considered an excellent road base course material, was carried out for use as a reference material.

Pillar mining methods at the Pasminco Mining Broken Hill Operations are not new. Since mining commenced on Pasminco's leases at the turn of the century virtually every pillar extraction method tried throughout the world has been used. Much of the remaining mineral resource in the Pasminco Broken Hill leases is contained in pillars.However, due to the on-going need for mechanisation with bulk mining methods, and the very peculiar physical circumstances surrounding the formation of these pillars, their exploitation requires the development of a virtually new method based on excavation technology not previously used in the Australian mining industry. Trials of the method are to take place at the southern operations during 1991.

The City of Kalgoorlie/Boulder is situated approximately 600 kilometres to the east of Perth (Fig. 1), and is the major regional centre of the Eastern Goldfields, supporting a population of approximately 25,000. The formation of Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines in 1989 brought the existing operat- ing entities adjacent to the city under common ownership and management. The Joint Venturers forming the management company are Homestake Gold of Australia and Gold Mines of Kalgoorlie (a Normandy/Poseidon com- pany). This traditional underground mining centre has been worked since 1893, yielding 40.8 million ounces of gold from ore with an average head grade of 10 grams per tonne. Historically the heart of the operation has been the famous Golden Mile located on the Eastern perimeter of the city, in the area known as Fimiston. The other significant operations that form KCGM are the Mt Percy Open Pit and the Mt Charlotte Underground Operation. KCGM's current production is 520,000 ounces per year, with the com- bined Fimiston operations (open cut and underground) contributing 400,000 ounces. The current expansion will increase production levels by a further 150,000 ounces. Traditionally 98 per cent of gold has been sourced from underground areas, however the recent upsurge of open cut operations is rapidly overturning this historical relationship.

The major Permian coal deposits of N.S.W. are in the Sydney-Bowen Basin and associated small deposits occur in structurally isolated areas; a further deposit is present in the Oaklands Basin. - The Sydney-Bowen Basin in New South Wales comprises the sub basins, the Sydney Basin and the Gunnedah Basin. Coal measures in these basins are near the top of the Permian succession and within and below an underlying marine sequence. The coal deposits can be conveniently described in units in which the coal geology is homogeneous. The Clyde Coal Measures and Yarrunga Coal Measures contain no seams of economic significance and occur beneath the marine beds in the south of the Sydney Basin. The Greta Coal Measures are economically significant and represent a brief interlude in the marine sequence in the north of the Sydney Basin and equivalents are present in the east of the Gunnedah Basin. The Tomago Coal Measures crop out above the marine sequence east from the Lochinvar Anticline and dip southeast to uneconomic depths. The Newcastle Coal Measures are historically and economically very important and overlie the Tomago Coal Measures and these measures will continue to be important although future mining will be faced with greater depths. To the west of the Lochinvar Anticline the Singleton Coal Measures, equivalent to the Tomago and Newcastle Coal Measures, crop out. This unit represents the thickest development of coal measures in the State and has a very large potential for both open cut and underground mining. Equivalents of the Singleton Coal Measures, the Black Jack Coal Measures and the Booroomin Group crop out on the east side of the Gunnedah Basin and probably are widespread across the Basin. They have less economic potential than the Singleton Coal Measures. In the southwest of the Gunnedah Basin, Illawarra/Singleton Coal Measures crop out over extensive areas and possibly have a large potential for underground mining under low cover. The Illawarra Coal Measures are exposed along the western margin of the Sydney Basin and thicken as they dip into the Basin across a shelf. The outcrop area is currently mined and the shelf has considerable potential for future mining. The highest rank coals in the State are in the Illawarra Coal Measures in the south of the Sydney Basin. The deepest coal mining is in this area and its continuing success is of great importance to the future exploitation of the resources of the Basin. The Tomago, Newcastle, Singleton and Illawarra Coal Measures extend into and meet in the central area of the Sydney Basin but they are under thick cover and are not considered to be economic at present. Permian coal measures occur in isolated areas in the New England Fold Belt and have limited economic potential. The Oaklands Basin in the south of the State contains a large reserve of low rank coal.

The influence of the insulating properties of lunar regolith was shown in the sub-surface temperature tests performed by the Apollo missions, with no significant temperature fluctuations occurring below 80 cm from the lunar surface even if surface temperatures fluctuated >200 K between lunar days and nights (Heiken et al, 1991). Key to the thermal insulation of the regolith is its low density near the surface having the greatest insulative effect with the lunar regolith becomes denser with depth. As the regolith becomes denser, the thermal conductivity of the regolith increases (Hayne et al, 2017). Thermal modelling software, Oxford 3D Thermal Model, which mapped the lunar surface temperatures effect on the thermal influence at the lunar south pole sub-surface over a lunar year found areas with brief illumination with surface temperatures >120 K could have sub-surface temperatures <112 K that can sustain long-term stable water ice at depths of <30 cm (Paige et al, 1992; King et al, 2020). Further to this, the observation of water molecules or other hydroxyls by the NASA/DLR Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) in non-permanently shadowed regions (PSRs) on the Moon, indicated that water could be present beyond PSRs (Honniball et al, 2021). Using the Oxford 3D Thermal Model in selected regions in the lunar south pole, can provide insights into the location and depth of cold traps that could sustain water ice.

The application of methods using large diameter down holes has become an important facet in both the development and stoping operations of mines within the Aberfoyle group. Holes of up to 98 metres (vertical) and 78 metres (inclined) have been successfully used in stoping operations. A number of rises have been developed to meet ventilation, servicing and escape-way requirements. The most ambitious rise to date has been a..vertical 93 metre long by 4.50 metre square ventilation rise. Although some early problems were experienced, the ultimate successful completion of this rise has enabled the technique to be incorporated with confidence in future mining plans. This paper summarises experience in long hole rising techniques, their evolution from the original cratering concepts, and the approach to further development of these techniques.

A Train Performance Calculator (TPC) is an essential tool in railway operations, as a means of acquiring quickly a precise measure of the performance of the system. Traditionally the TPC was used in the form of program for a large computer. By employing an efficient integration algorithm and tailoring the program to suit the computer system it is shown that it is possible to devise a TPC for a mini computer. The resulting low running costs and flexibility of operation makes this a useful design tool. This TPC was developed to study problems associated with a single track railway operation. It was applied specifically to study the railway operated by the Mt. Newman Mining Co. Limited in the Pilbara region of W.A. to transport iron ore from the mine to the port. The TPC was used to calculate the effects of changes to locomotive power, to train size, to the track and to the amount of traffic. Its accuracy was checked by comparing its performance with that of the actual trains.

Since 1969, a substantial number of geophysical methods have been applied in the search for porphyry copper and mesothermal type -sulpha-de deposits. These have assisted with geological mapping as well as the definition of various sulphide depos-its. The application of these methods at the Frieda-Nena deposits, Papua New Guinea, can be used as a case study for exploration in other parts of New Guinea.In 1993, Highlands Gold Limited carried out an intensive geophysical program over the Nena deposit. The methods employed included, CSAMT (controlled-source audio magneto-tellurics), airborne and ground elect-romagnetics, IP/resistivity and ground magnetics. The magnetic method was used as a regional mapping tool as well as a way of mapping alteration zones over both the Nena and Frieda River copper deposits. Electromagnetics, in part-icular FLAIRTEM, is a rapid reconn-aissance tool as well as a detailed mapping tool for the location of Nena-style massive sulphide deposits. IP/ resistivity is an expensive but most useful tool for mapping out Frieda porphyry copper style disseminated sulphides as well as Nena style deposits. As part of the current NERDDC funded project studying Dragline/Hopper/ Crusher/Conveyor systems for overburden removal, an investigation was carried out to assess the feasibility of automating the swing-to-dump phase of the dragline digging cycle in order to main- tain consistent performance of spotting the bucket above the hopper prior to dumping. The study involved design of automatic position controls for the hoist, drag and swing drives and simulation of detailed mathe- matical models of the three electromechanical systems and their associated electrical control schemes. The design of the hoist and drag systems to position the bucket in the boom plane is relatively straightforward. Simulation results show fast and accurate performance, with no evidence of interaction between the two drive systems through the ropes. The design of the swing position control system involves special strate- gies to cater for variable inertia and to damp the pendulum oscillations of the bucket. The use of a bucket pendulum model and variable dynamic compensation embedded within the feedback control loop, along with optimal speed/angle slowdown trajectories, has yielded fast and damped positioning responses under simulation.
