A systematic, detailed airborne geophysical programme carried out in the Taupo Volcanic Region (TVR) in 2005 by Glass Earth NZ Ltd culminated in the identification of 21 epithermal gold targets. In this paper we present the follow up ground-truthing results from the first target drilled, Tahunaatara (TAH).   The Tahunaatara target was identified by means of a multi-disciplinary integrated approach (ôdata interventionö) that defined and ranked the target as being highly prospective for epithermal gold mineralisation. A follow-up ground resistivity survey over the target area revealed the presence of a ôresistorö buried beneath an extensive cover of recent volcaniclastic material. Geochemical soil sampling carried out in conjunction with the resistivity survey yielded anomalous gold values.   The host unit at TAH consists primarily of flow banded rhyolitic lavas, volcaniclastic deposits and tuffs of the Ohakuri Ignimbrite with small outcrops of silicified bedded breccias forming local topographic highs. Results from the first orientation drill hole show wide zones of intense silicification, clay alteration and mineralisation. Sulphide mineralisation is disseminated throughout the core in association with hydrothermal replacement and also occurs in association with quartz veins and infill in fractures (sulphide-only veinlets as opposed to quartz + sulphide veinlets). Textural evidence from drill core indicates that hydrothermal fluid flow was multi-staged with potential for multi-stage gold, and other elements. The presence of polymictic hydrothermal eruptive breccias indicates a hydrothermal vent system.   Alteration varies from argillic to silicic, with pervasive adularia and vuggy silicification also present. Chlorite is minor and associated with quartz, illitic clay and adularia. Assay results currently available confirm the presence of anomalous gold values in association with zones of vuggy silica deposition and intense silicification.

"AustraliaÆs mining sector faces challenges to its competitiveness; operating costs are being adversely affected as a result of volatile commodity prices and growing international market pressures.Diesel fuel-generated power used in typical remote mining projects is generally reliable and quick-to-deploy; however it is ongoing expensive operating cost.Many mines and communities in remote locations source electricity from diesel generation, and often pay over $300/MWh in fuel and carbon only (i.e. excluding CAPEX). These costs are expected to rise over time and are vulnerable to price shock events or supply chain interruptions in international markets.Solar photovoltaic (PV) and other renewables can be integrated with existing diesel units to provide a highly reliable power supply. Such renewables now provide a cheaper source of electricity while maintaining the mining industryÆs stringent reliability requirements; some renewables are now cheaper than diesel power ù supplying electricity at approximately $226/MWh.Also, significant funding and concessional rate financing have recently become available to support the development of remote solar-diesel (or solar-wind-diesel) hybrid systems, including: up to $2.2 billion of as-yet uncommitted grants through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and is now seeking mining industry partners, up to $10 billion of concessional financing for emerging renewable technologies through the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) and this commences July 2013, ongoing revenue support through the Renewable Energy Target scheme, and other regional support programs administered by various governments.This paper explores: the business case for renewables - what applications and when to consider them, the potential operating cost savings if solar was integrated, the technical challenges and common pitfalls, and how to overcome them, and the upfront investment costs and whether the site is eligible for Government subsidy programs.CITATION:Chambers, C, 2013. On a worldwide basis trackbound transportation is on the decline. As mining operations progress from open cast operations to underground operations, most utilise mechanised equipment. However, in South Africa hard rock mines, only a small percentage (¦10 per cent) of the production can be generated by mechanised methods and therefore trackbound mining methods will remain the dominant means to transport ore. In the Australian context there may be occasions where the nature of the orebody would dictate the use of rail transportation with the ore being transported from drawpoints by means of locomotives and hoppers. This paper focuses on horizontal rail haulage systems from the stope loading boxes to the shaft station area and will be largely based on South African experience. It is intended that this document will provide a practical guideline for mine designers and planners during the design process. The paper looks at trackbound transport systems and evaluates such items as construction and management of an underground rail haulage system. Current transportation systems for personnel, material and rock transportation are evaluated, gaps in technology highlighted, and recommendations made.

The transgressive sedimentary sequence of the Noumea Basin contains rhyolitic lavas and less voluminous mafic and intermediate volcanics of shoshonitic affinities which erupted simultaneously during the late Cretaceous. The shoshonitic volcanism shows a trend froIn early mafic to younger evolved intermediate lithologies. The rhyolites are consistently calcalkaline. There is no evidence of mixing of the two magma types. The shoshonitic volcanism is the result of a short-lived subduction event related to spreading in the New Caledonia Basin and involved reactivation of an earlier esozoic subduction zone.

The Hauraki goldfield is located east of Auckland in the North Island of New Zealand. It includes Great Barrier Island, the Coromandel Peninsula and the Coromandel and Kaimai Ranges as far south as the town of Te Aroha and south east to Te Puke. It has a total north-south extent of about 180 km and an area of 3000 km2. The goldfield is the most productive in New Zealand, and while production at present is negligible, the area has undergone continuous exploration over the last seven years.

Laboratory and pilot plant investigations aimed at recovering gold as an electroformed sheet from gold eluate and gold leach solutions and slurries are discussed. The electrolytic test work undertaken makes use of high surface area electrodes, in particular nickel-chrome foam metal and activated carbon, as well as ultrasonic activation. The process involves initial gold electrowinning (or adsorption onto activated carbon), followed by gold electroforming, both operations being carried out in a specially designed reactor. The pilot plant work mainly involved the treatment of gold eluate solutions from a South African gold mine containing 600 mg/L Au: some tests were also carried out on gold leach solutions containing 6 mg/L Au. In the former case, very efficient gold extraction onto the foam metal cathode was achieved using electrolysis combined with ultrasonics. The polarity of the gold-loaded cathode was then reversed and, using a replacement electroforming electrolyte, gold was electroformed in situ onto a polished stainless steel mandrel, from which gold sheet was subsequently removed. In the case of leach solutions, pilot plant tests confirmed laboratory findings that in the presence of calcium (resulting from the lime used during the leaching process) no electrowinning is possible. Laboratory tests showed, however, that when sodium (in the form of NaOH or Na2CO3) is added to the leach solution, electrowinning can indeed take place. Alternatively, if a special activated carbon electrode is used (without current), the non-ionic calcium aurocyanide complex is adsorbed on to the activated carbon. When a gold-loaded activated carbon electrode is made anodic in a gold electroforming electrolyte, gold electroforming is feasible, although the efficiency is very low. The possible implications of these developments for gold recovery are further examined.

The central Taupo Volcanic Zone is a region of intense Quaternary silicic volcanism accompanying rapid crustal extension. Modem central TVZ is the most frequently active and productive silicic volcanic system on Earth, erupting rhyolite at c.0.28 m3 s-1. The rhyolites show no major compositional changes with time, but the total extent of magma chamber zonation has changed with the advent of rifting and crustal extension at c.0.7 Ma. At least 34 caldera-forming ignimbrite eruptions have formed a complex sequence of relatively short-lived, nested and/or overlapping volcanic centres in central TVZ. Taupo contrasts with other large silicic magmatic systems in the exceptionally high frequency, but small size, of caldera forming eruptions. This contrast reflects the thin, rifted nature of the TVZ crust that precludes the development of long term magmatic cycles at Taupo. Within central TVZ, non-rhyolitic compositions have been erupted apparently irregularly in time and space; in particular there is no evidence for a geographic separation of basalts from andesites. TVZ is a rifted arc, but its segmented nature, high thermal flux and voluminous rhyolitic volcanism make it unique on Earth.

Coastal acid sulfate soils (ASS) are wetland soils and unconsolidated sediments that contain iron sulfides which, when exposed to atmospheric oxygen in the presence of water, form sulfuric acid. ASS form in protected low energy environments such as barrier estuaries and coastal lakes and commonly occur in low lying coastal lands as Holocene marine muds and sands. When disturbed, the iron sulfides in these soils can oxidise and produce large volumes of sulfuric acid (essentially similar chemistry to acid rock drainage with mines) resulting in the subsequent release of toxic levels of iron, aluminium, manganese and possibly heavy metals. This results in detrimental effects on aquatic biota, plants, animals and steel/concrete structures and on human health in the surrounding environment. There are an estimated 2.3 million ha of ASS located along 6500 km of the Queensland coastline. In contrast to many mineral sulfides encountered in the mining industry, the pyrite crystals in ASS can be as small as 2 mm and commonly occur as framboids with extremely large surface area per unit mass, substantially increasing their reactivity if exposed to air (oxidation). Highly reactive iron monosulfides can also occur, particularly in drains and shallow lakes. Many coastal areas, where some 80 per cent of the population of Queensland reside, are coming under pressure for agricultural and urban development. Construction of canal estates, marinas, housing/industrial estates, roads, golf courses, aquaculture ponds, sand/gravel extraction and drainage for sugar cane can disturb ASS and release sulfuric acid, which may then drain into adjacent waterways with heavy rain. As development continues to encroach on coastal lowlands, the identification, quantification and management of ASS must be addressed as part of a commitment to the principles of Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD). ASS can be successfully managed by adopting best practices and following guidelines, but government, community and industry must collaborate to raise awareness, avoid æhot spotsÆ and develop more cost-effective solutions. Scientists led the education and public awareness program showing infrastructure and environmental damages arising from ASS in Queensland. Using results from mapping and research, they convinced policy makers, industry and polititians to accept the need for legislation founded on good science. The resulting æState Planning Policy 2/02: Planning and Managing Development Involving Acid Sulfate SoilsÆ identifies the StateÆs interest in acid sulfate soils. The Queensland Government considers that development involving acid sulfate soils in low-lying coastal areas should be planned and managed to avoid potential adverse effects on the natural and built environment (including infrastructure) and human health. SPP 2/02 states where the policy applies and when a development application will trigger the policy. It can also be used to assist local governments in preparing their planning schemes under the æIntegrated Planning Act 1997Æ. The SPP 2/02 comes with a æState Planning Policy 2/02 GuidelineÆ to provide advice and technical information on interpreting and implementing the SPP 2/02. This guideline has legal status in assisting in the interpretation of SPP 2/02. Those seeking more detailed technical information can now also access the æSoil Management GuidelinesÆ and ASS æSampling GuidelineÆ, available from the Department of Natural Resources and Mines website. In washability, the objective is to establish the set of maximum possible separation performance criteria for a given mineral feed. The method of choice for this has been the conventional sink–?float analysis. Using traditional sink–float method it is not possible to sample and automatically measure. This fact, as well as time, cost and safety aspects, as well as required and manageable sample size of the sink–float method have prompted the search for a new approach for establishing separation performance criteria. This is especially important as performance levels of separator plants can be maximised if reliable information based on an analysis of washability in conjunction with particle size distribution, elemental constituency becomes available in time. The new method to establish washability and associated performance information utilises at least two measurement technologies concurrently: single energy X-ray transmission and image processing. For porous or very inhomogeneous materials the results can be refined further by using dual energy X-ray transmission and image processing.If used as a standard laboratory device the continuous build-up of the washability curve allows to evaluate the statistical significance of the sample size during measurement.The measuring method can even be improved if it is combined with an automatic sampling system that feeds a continuous and representative particle stream to the analyser. Then the value of the collected data increases considerably since the washability data are additionally available in time to be considered in the control of the process plant. The washability curve can be derived and is continuously updated based on the particles measured during the past time interval. Older curves and results are stored in a database and can be retrieved for later reference. This technology now enables automated sampling and integrated automated measurement, which was previously not possible.This incorporation of an automated washability monitor at a representative sample gives near real-time data that would impinge positively on the profitability of the plant operation. Study on Desulfurisation and Deashing for Medium-High Sulfur Coal Using Shaking Table As important coal resources, medium- high sulfur accounts for a significant part of the coal reserve in China. The environmental regulations and fuel standard requires sulfur and ash to be removed before it is used, so as to save energy and decrease the emission. Therefore, the effective desulfurisation and deashing technologies are urgent needed. However, due to the local characteristics of the coal, specific technology with optimum operation parameters is required to develop for different local coal. Qinglong is a district of Guizhou Province, which has large medium to high sulfur contained coal reserve. In this paper, medium-high sulfur coal is sampled from Qinglong, Guizhou province. Some basic characteristics such as the mineralogical composition of the coal rock, the monomer existing state and the granulometric composition are determined by X-ray diffraction quantitative analysis and polarisation microscope analysis respectively. Adopting the classified feed method, shaking table tests show that the feed pulp concentration is 20 per cent, the stroke is 13mm, the frequency of the stroke is 380 per min, the cross slope is 3¦ and the volume of wash water is 5.2 L per min. Under such condition, aggregate processed coal yield is 72.87 per cent and sulfur content decrease to 1.31 per cent With shaking table technology of 'First stage rough and intermediate further fine benefication', the yield of concentrate coal increased from 72.87 per cent to 81.21 per cent, while the sulfur content reduced to 1.35 per cent.

The Bayswater seam of the Singleton Coal Measures is discussed in relation to its field occurrence and related li~hotype profiles. The seam is correlated throughout widely separated areas of the Hunter Valley with the Farrells Creek seam at Howick, Broke seam at Broke, and Saddlers Creek seam at Mt. Arthur. The unusual features of composition of the seam in relation to adjacent seams is dealt with in terms of the seam environment, particular attention being given to the sandstone at the base of .the seam. Petrographic and other data are used to support the arguments submitted.

A tectonic interpretation of the Coromandel Peninsula which suggests that the basement underwent tensional collapse at its northern and southern ends would permit more ready penetration of late stage magmatic fluids. This hypothesis is consistent with regional trends of the chloride content of low grade geothermal waters and of the yield of gold and silver per unit weight of quartz worked. The consequences of such a model are that mercury should not only be a good pathfinder for Coromandel gold, but that it should be correlative with ratios of base metals high in the zoning or paragenetic sequences to those lower in the sequences. This is demonstrated successfully in an area of mineralisation in the southern Coromandel.
