THE mineral trona was discovered on Government land in 1938, about 18 miles west of the town of Green River, Wyo., in the core of the John Hay, Jr., well, a test well drilled for oil by the Mountain Fuel Supply Co. in sec. 2, T. 18 N., R. 110 W., sixth principal meridian. Although no oil or gas was reported, the drilling led to a discovery of great potential economic importance and exceptional scientific interest. Trona is a relatively rare mineral found at various places in playa deposits but not previously found at any great depth. It is composed of hydrous sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate (Na2CO3.NaHCO3.2H20). Pure trona contains the equivalent of 70.35 per cent of sodium carbonate. Total sodium computed to carbonate times 1.42 equals the percentage of trona in the absence of other sodium carbonate minerals in the sample. ANALYSES Two short pieces of core sent to the author a few days after the completion of the Hay well were analyzed by R. C. Wells[t] and found to be exceptionally pure trona. A brief article on this discovery has already been published.1 Arrangements were then made through W. T. Nightengale[$] for the author to inspect and sample the core. The company log of the well included notations of sodium salt crystals from a depth of 1190 to 1820 ft. Not being able to identify all the minerals present, the author selected several specimens of the core for petrographic examinations and sampled the sections of trona for analysis. J. J. Fahey, of the Geological Survey, examined the specimens and reported most of the crystals to be a new anhydrous sodium carbonate and calcium carbonate mineral (Na2CO3.2CaCO3), which he named shortite,2 after Maxwell N. Short.* He analyzed the samples of trona, with the results shown in Table I. [ ] In addition to the 10 ft. I in. of trona in the first section, it is reasonable to assume that the 9 ft. 8 in. for which no core was available for sampling is either mostly trona or some other soluble salt, but it should not be included in calculating reserves. In the part of the core between 1590 ft. 3 in. and I600 ft. 4 in. the material insoluble in cold water, amounting to about 5 per cent, was estimated petrographically to contain 70 per cent clay, 25 per cent shortite, and 5 per cent pyrite. produced when zinc is substituted for a certain amount of tin are decidedly unsatisfactory. The substitution of aluminum for tin is entirely impractical, and such castings are worthless. This does not, however, exhaust all the possibilities of substituting other metals for tin in the copper-tin-lead alloys, but it is my opinion that the substitution of any other metals, in those alloys, can be made only by sacrificing the quality of the alloy. The possibility of substituting alloys of an entirely different type presents an attractive field for research. The copper-tin-lead alloy has attained its position as the most desirable bronze bearing alloy, but this does not mean that some other alloy may not be found which may give equally good or better results. In the search for such a substitute alloy it should be borne in mind that a bearing metal should possess the following properties: (1) It should be sufficiently rigid to support the load or resist the impact, but yet not so brittle that it will easily crack. (2) It should have as great a yielding or plastic nature as is consistent with its ability to support the load or resist the impact without deformation of the bearing as a whole. (3) The ideal structure combines a hard matrix to support the load and a softer metal or alloy contained within such matrix, to permit the bearing surface to adjust itself to irregularities of service. (4) It should be easy to handle in the foundry and machine shop. (5) It should be capable of being remelted without deterioration. (6) For use in babbitt-lined bearings, it should be capable of being tinned, so that the babbitt can be applied thereto. (7) It should have good heat conductivity in order to dissipate the heat generated by friction. Pennsylvania Railroad Anti-friction and Bell Metals F. M. Waring," Altoona, Pa.—Thc necessity for conserving tin has recently been very forcibly brought to the attention of all consumers, and efforts are now being made to reduce the tin content in certain alloys or to substitute other alloys not containing tin. The approximate composition of the non-ferrous alloys in general use on the Pennsylvania Railroad are given in the accompanying table. Phosphor bronze is used principally for rod bushings, main-rod brasses, and crosshead shoes. Ex. B bronze is used to a small extent for backs of car and coach bearings, but the majority of these are now made of the car-journal bronze, which contains, on the average, about 5 per cent. tin.

The Whale Lode occurs in the main range of the Rocky Mountains, Park County, Colorado Territory, at Hall Valley. It has been opened up and worked to some extent by the Whale Mine, situated some 11,300 feet above the level of the sea. The mine, with 700 feet of the lode on either side of the discovery shaft, is the property of the Hall Valley Silver-Lead Mining and Smelting Company. The adjacent country rock is a compact, fine-grained gneiss; its general strike is about north and south, dipping steeply to the west. In the immediate vicinity of the mine, the strata are very nearly vertical. The gneiss incloses numberless veins of a reddish granite, in which the feldspar largely predominates over the quartz and mica, the latter oftentimes being scarcely perceptible. As a general rule these granitic veins seem to more frequently follow the lines of stratification of the gneiss than otherwise. They are of varying width, some large, some small; the larger are from 5 to 6 feet wide. Gash veins of feldspar and quartz are also of very frequent occurrence. The general trend of the lode is about northeast. and southwest, intersecting the country rock at about an angle of 45 to its stratification. It dips to the northwest at an angle of 65. I am unable to state accurately how far this lode has been traced upon the surface, but it is at least well known to extend entirely through the mountain upon which the mine is situated, and is traceable over the ridge by a hollow extending for some distance along the surface, in which the lode crops out. This hollow in the surface rock has probably been formed through decomposition of the vein matter by atmospherical influences. The width of the crevice is variable, generally between 5 and 10 feet; the pay vein varies from an inch, or less, to 36 inches. The vein is generally accompanied both on foot and hanging walls by a whitish, semi-decomposed fock, composed of quartz and decomposed feldspar, and in some places—where the process of decomposition has not reached as advanced a stage—a lightgreenish or black mica. This rock, therefore, is in places composed of all the constituents of gneiss, and is undoubtedly nothing more or less than the same in a decomposed condition. Solvent-in-pulp extraction of uranium from acid leach slurries of flotation concentrates is described. Solvent extraction was carried out in a 10 in. diam pulsed-plate column. The extractant was a 0.1 M tertiary amine (General Mills Alamine 336) in a kerosene diluent containing isodecanol as an emulsion suppressor and third phase inhibitor. In pilot plant operation at the Beaverlodge mill of Eldorado Mining and Refining, Ltd., slurry feeds containing up to 35% solids were processed at a throughput rate of 13.5 tpd of dry feed. Uranium extraction obtained was as high as 98%. Amine losses to the raffinate were approximately 0.07 lb amine per ton of original dry feed. The Beaverlodge Mill of Eldorado Mining and Refining employs a carbonate leach for the extraction of uranium from the ore.',' Prior to carbonate leaching sulphides are removed by flotation to reduce reagent consumption. This flotation concentrate containing some uranium is then leached with sulfuric acid, filtered, and the uranium precipitated with magnesium hydroxide. The precipitate is then returned to the carbonate leach circuit. Although the tonnage of flotation concentrate treated by acid leaching is low, reagent costs are relatively high. Also maintenance costs on the acid leach filtration circuit were beginning to show significant increases. The choice of solvent extraction-in-pulp as an alternative to the present circuit was influenced by the following factors: 1) elimination of acid pulp filtration, 2) increase in overall recovery because of soluble loss elimination, 3) reduction of reagent cost (mill sodium carbonate solutions are used as strip), and 4) production of higher purity precipitate at the mill site. Because a solvent-in-pulp process would be difficult to test on a bench-scale, the Eldorado experience in the use of pulse columns,3-5 mixer-settlers,6 and solvent-in-pulp operations in particular7 was applied directly to the initial pilot plant carried out during the summer of 1965 and followed by the second pilot plant in 1966. The latter work, which is presented in this paper, determined the following factors for anticipated scale-up to plant production: 1) overall uranium recovery by this process, 2) tonnage throughput expected, and 3) solvent losses anticipated for the full-scale plant. The equipment used consisted of a 10 in. diam extraction pulse column and three mixer-settlers for scrubbing, stripping, and acid equilibration. All equipment was designed by Eldorado and much of the pilot plant was built at the mill site. The resistivity of single crystal and of polycrystalline metal has been determined between 77° and 1500°K. At comparable purity, the resistivity of the poly crystalline metal differs from that calculated from the axial resistivity values. The observed anisotropy is briefly discussed. A zone refined titanium rod was obtained from F. J. Darnell.1 The hardness of this material varied between 52 and 64 Bhn, indicative of its high purity. Single-crystal specimens were cut out from a few large grains, elongated predominantly along <1120>. Resistance measurements were taken with specimens immersed in liquid nitrogen, solid CO,, and acetone, and at ice point, and then recorded continuously between room temperature and 1200" to 1250°C, throughout at least one full heating and cooling cycle at a rate of l° to 3°C per min. Four probe measurements were taken using spot-welded Pt wire 0.003 in. in diam as potential terminals, and the electromotive force drop was determined poten-tiometrically. A standard resistance, in series with the specimen, served to determine the dc current (generally about 80 ma) in the circuit. In order to eliminate spurious thermal electromotive forces, the circuit polarity was automatically reversed at 5-min intervals, and the mean of the two adjacent readings taken as the true electromotive force value. The discrepancy between the readings at reversed polarities was generally of the order of a few µ v, as all the spot-welded joints were contained within a volume of some 5 mm cube. The relative resistance (R T/R 273o) variation with temperature is tabulated below, and shown in Fig. 1, as measured during the first heating run. The discontinuous drop in resistance, corresponding to the a — ß transformation, started for both initial orientations at 1170°K; i.e., some 15°K above the accepted value of 882°C (1155°K). Judging by the temperature ranse of transformation—some 30°K for the single crystal and 20°K for the polycrystal-line specimen—this difference is believed caused by the solution of the oxygen present initially on the surface of the specimens. The general trend of the resistance vs temperature shown in Fi,;. 1 is in qualitative agreement with that previously reported for polycrystalline titanium metal. 2,3 Significant anisotropy is, however, indicated by the crossing over of the curves for <1120> and <0001> orientations at 273°, 650°, and 1000°K. INTRODUCTION At the end of the day, the decision by the sponsor to proceed with a project and to seek financing, or the decision by the financier to grant financing are made on a judgmental basis. Cash flow projections, sensitivity and risk analysis, the innumerable ratios applied by the financier, the so-called feasibility study, etc. are all only tools, and the degree to which they affect decisions is as highly varied as are the personality differences and business conduct and outlooks of the persons who render the decision of "go or no-go". The independent consultant, then, is expected to provide an additional increment of credulity and/or reliability to the "tools" which others will use in reaching a decision; the consultant is really not in a position to directly recommend a "go or no-go". PROJECT FINANCE INGREDIENTS The project finance situation has basically three ingredients: - The project; - The inherent risks attendant with project failure; - The parties. The project, to be viable for financing, will have certain essential characteristics, namely: 1. Clear title or rights to the mineral; 2. Proven definition/establishment of mineral quantity; 3. Financial viability; 4. Physical access consistent with financial viability; 5. A market for the product at a price and for the quantity consistent with financial viability; 6. Transportation/shipping from the project facility to the market at a cost consistent with financial viability; 7. Availability and demonstrated expertise of the developer of the facility; 8. Demonstrated expertise of the operator of the facility; 9. Production processes do not involve unproven new technology; 10. Availability of management personnel; 11. The property and the facilities have value (and thus can be used as collateral); 12. Government approvals/support, as required, will have been obtained; 13. The political environment is essentially friendly and stable; 14. The owner(s) of the project have the financial, strength to make equity contributions consistent with total required investment capital and project risk; 15. Backing by credit support other than that of the financier (i.e. guarantees); The inherent risks of failure are (Nevitt, 2nd Edition); 1. Completion delays with consequent delays in the generation of revenue 2. Cost overruns 3. Technical failure 4. Financial failure of contractors 5. Government interference 6. Uninsured losses 7. Increased price or shortages of raw materials, supplies 8. Technical obsolescence 9. Loss of competitive position in the market place 10. Expropriation 11. I CANNOT agree with the results obtained by the committee. The gas obtained per pound of coal is too high in calorific value and the amount of gas is too large. It should require about 190 cu. ft. of oxygen per 1000 cu. ft. of gas and not 75.14 cu. ft. as is given on page 35 of the report, or about 2.5 as much. Calculating the calorific value per pound of coal from the coal analysis given on page 34, according to Dulong&apos;s formula, the gross and net calorific heat are about 12,890 and 12,430 B.t.u., respectively, which is about 18,600 and 17,900 B.t.u., respectively, per pound of carbon in the coal. This is an unusually high figure, as ordinary bituminous coal has less than 18,000 gross B.t.u. per pound of carbon. Assuming, however, that the calorific values calculated are correct, the following results are obtained. On page 35, the net calorific heat in the gas per pound of coal is given as 12,856 B.t.u. and calculation for the gross value shows it to be about 13,950; in other words, the gas contains (13,950 - 12,890) ÷ 12,890 = 8.2 per cent. more heat than the coal on a gross basis and (12,856 - 12,430) ÷ 12,430 = 3.4 per cent. more on a net basis. The calculated amount of carbon in this gas per pound of coal gasified is about 0.688 lb., or nearly the same as in the coal (0.6972) and the gross and net calorific heat per pound of carbon in the gas are 20,300 and 18,710 B.t.u. which are 9.1 and 4.5 per cent. more than for the carbon in the coal. These calculations show that the results given in the report cannot be correct. There must always be some heat losses in the gasification of coal, in radiation from the producer, and in sensible heat in the gas; there must be some loss of carbon in ashes and in soot, and there are always tarry vapors in the gases that are condensed and do not appear in the fixed gases. From the excessive heat in gas per pound of carbon contained therein, it can also be concluded that the percentage of hydrogen in the gas is too high, from which it follows that the moisture decomposed is too high and that more free oxygen must be used.

Isothermal sections in the copper -rich region of the Cu-Si-Zn a1by system have been determined at 8473 760; 6003 and 482°C by means of microscopic examination with confirmatory X-ray diffraction work. The stability of the bee 0 phase decreases both with decreasing temperature and with increasing copper content. The silicon-n&apos;ch 0 phase decomposes upon quenching from high temperatures either by a martensitic or by a "massive" transformation, depending upon the solute content. A two-phase equilibrium is found to exist in the Cu-Si-Zn system between the hep < phase of the Cu-Si system and the bee ß phase of the Cu-Zn system. It is shown that the isothermal limits of the primary solid solution at 760; 6003 and 482°C are in part affected by the intermediate phases which follow them in the ternary system Possible electron-concentration and size effects upon phase boundaries are discussed. ALTHOUGH the mechanical and physical properties of silicon brasses have been measured in great detail, the factors which influence these properties are not well-understood, partly because the knowledge of the phase relationships in the Cu-Si-Zn system is limited. Gould and Ray1 studied the effects of silicon upon the hardness and structure of Cu-15 pet Zn and Cu-40 pet Zn alloys. They proposed an isothermal section at 800°C which was not based upon experimental data, since the binary phase diagrams had not been completely determined. Using Cu-Si-Zn alloys containing approximately 5 wt pet Si, vaders2 determined the boundary, at 750°C, between the copper-rich solid solution and an unidentified second phase. Masing and wallbaum3 examined a vertical section through the ternary diagram in the region between Cu-20 pet Zn and Cu-10 pet Si alloys, but they emphasized uncertainty about their data. Mima and Hasegawa4 studied the liquidus surface of Cu-Si-Zn alloys, phase transformations in high silicon-bearing (20 to 25 at. pet) alloys,5 and the phase relations in low silicon-bearing Cu-Si-Zn alloys.6 Their experiments were based upon thermal analyses and metallographic observations. The compositions of the phase boundaries were not determined with high precision, and the crystal structures of the phases were not reported. Because of uncertainties in the existing literature, it became of interest to determine more accurately the phase relations in copper-rich Cu-Si-Zn alloys. The crystal structures, stability, and phase boundaries of the primary solid solutions and several intermediate phases were determined, and the data are reported as partial isothermal sections.

The partial isothermal section of the Ti-Cu-Zr system at 750°C has been studied. The crystal structure of Ti2Cu has been detevnlined as tetragonal and when expressed as face-centered tetragonal, a = 4.164, c = 3.611 A, and c/a = 0.867. TITANIUM systems in which ß-titanium decomposes eutectoidally into a and a compound rather readily are known as active eutectoid systems. Recently in active eutectoid alloys based on the Ti-Cu system, and containing additionally A1 and Zr, it has been found that zirconium may produce both moderate weakening and marked strengthening at elevated temperatures.&apos; In order to obtain some insight into the behavior of zirconium, an attempt was made to determine whether compounds of the type Tix Zr and TixZryCu exist. Only results of the Ti-Zr-Cu studies are reported here since data on Ti-Zr alloys will be presented in a separate publication. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloys were nonconsumably arc melted in argon atmosphere as 15-g buttons, prepared from materials of the following purities: Bureau of Mines electrolytic Ti — Bhn 63 OFHC copper Reactor Grade Zirconium Bhn .C 150 Prior to alloy preparation the electrolytic titanium was premelted to avoid excessive spattering of the charges during melting. The weight losses during melting did not exceed 1 pct of the total weight of the charge. The alloys prepared are listed in Table I together with analyzed compositions. in cases where they were determined. Specimens for heat treatment were wrapped in molybdenum sheet, annealed in argon-filled quartz capsules, and quenched by breaking the capsules under iced brine. About 1 to 2 sec are required to remove the capsule from the furnace, drop it into the iced brine and break it. Because of the insulation effect of the quartz, this delay in quenching should not produce a large drop in temperature. In many instances, no difference or little difference has been detected between the same specimen quartz capsule quenched or directly quenched in vacuum by an impinging stream of water.&apos; Ti-Cu-Zr alloys were homogenized for 48 hr at 825°C prior to annealing at 750°C. Annealing for 5 days at 750°C produced the same results as 11 days at temperature and it was therefore assumed that 5 days was sufficient to establish equilibrium. Titanium-copper alloys were homogenized for 40 hr at 900°C prior to heat treatment for 6 days at 750°C. MeTallographic specimens whose surfaces are to be investigated are too thick to allow either light or electrons to pass through them for microexamination by transmission. This difficulty is overcome with optical microscopes by illuminating the surface through the objective lens. For electron microscopes best results are obtained by preparing thin replicas of the surface of the specimen, placing them in the microscope and passing the electron beam through them. Since electron microscopes represent a rather recent invention, they have found little application as compared with optical microscopes. This is true because, aside from the cost of new equipment and development of new techniques, some of the older replica methods necessitated the destruction of the surface from which a thin transparent replica was obtained. In other processes in which the surface is preserved, either too tedious a procedure is required, unsuited to "mass-production" requirements of industrial laboratories, or replicas of insufficient contrast and sharpness are produced. In general, investigations with the electron microscope involve five steps: (I) polishing the surface of the metal specimen, (2) proper etching of the surface, (3) preparing the suitable replica from the surface, (4) examination and phorography in electron microscope and (5) interpretation. Preparation of Metal Surfaces Usual metallographic polishing is generclly satisfactory. It is important though that the final polish be applied very carefully, since otherwise evidence of a small amount of deformation might show up even on relatively deeply etched surfaces. A high-power microscope should be used to determine the suitability of the polish and etch. This, of course, is not different from optical examinations, but in these, if a deep etch is used, the problem is less serious. It is frequently difficult to detect with optical microscopes poor polishing aside fiom superficial scratches before etching. Figs. I and 2 show micrographs of "well" and "poorly" polished nickel etched by immersing the sample for 20 min. in a solution containing 8 grams cupric sulphate in 40 C.C. of concentrated HCl and 40 C.C. of Hz0 (Marble&apos;s reagent). The sample shown in Fig. I was polished in its final stages for 5 min. on a carborundum wheel followed by ro min. on a rouge wheel, whereas the sample shown in Fig. 2 was polished only I min. on the rouge wheel. Generally, this procedure does not guarantee that the surface of the specimen will be either undistorted or deformed. It was applied here merely to show the effects Of good and poor polishing. The thermodynamics of the cadmium-rich portion of the Pu-Cd system has been studied with a high-temperature galvanic-cell method. The partial phase diagram of the Pu-Cd system was determined. The existence of the intermediate phases PuCd11 (cubic BaHg11 structure, ao= 9.282) and PuCd6 (cubic, CeCd6 structure, a, = 15.59) was established. The existence of at least one other intermediate phase richer in plutonium was indicated. PuCd11 was found to peritectically decompose into PuCd6 and liquid at 406" * 2°C. The solubility of plutonium in liquid cadmium may be represented by the equations: (355&apos; to 399°C) log (at. pct Pu) = 6.223 -4282T-1 (399° to 632°C) log (al. pct Pu) - 5.148 - 5277T-1 > 1.156 x 106 T-2 The free energy of formation values (kcal per mole) of the two intermetallic phases are given by the equations: (PuCd11), ?Gf= -45.9 + 35.7 x 10-3 T (PuCd6), ?Gf0- -39.27 + 25.86 X 10-3T The excess free energy (kcal per mole) of plutonium in liquid cadmium may be represented by the equation: -(-16.72 * 29.54 NPu) 10-3T in which Npu and Ned are the atom fractions of plutonium and cadmium. The thermodyanamics of the U- Cd and Pu-Cd systems are compared. THERMODYNAMIC information on systems of the actinide metals with low-melting metals, such as zinc and cadmium, is useful in the design of pyro-metallurgical processes for the purification of nuclear reactor fuels. The thermodynamics of the Pu-Zn,1 Th-Zn.2,3 U-Zn,4-5 and U-Cd6 systems have been reported. The present report on the Pu-Cd system concerns the liquidus composition in the cadmium-rich region, the characterization of the two most cadmium-rich intermetallic phases, and the thermodynamic properties of these intermetallic phases and dilute liquid solutions of plutonium in cadmium. EXPERIMENTAL Phase Studies. The liquidus composition was determined by analysis of filtered samples of the liquid phase withdrawn at a series of temperatures. It is frequently difficult to detect with optical microscopes poor polishing aside fiom superficial scratches before etching. Figs. I and 2 show micrographs of "well" and "poorly" polished nickel etched by immersing the sample for 20 min. in a solution containing 8 grams cupric sulphate in 40 C.C. of concentrated HCl and 40 C.C. of Hz0 (Marble&apos;s reagent). The sample shown in Fig. I was polished in its final stages for 5 min. on a carborundum wheel followed by ro min. on a rouge wheel, whereas the sample shown in Fig. 2 was polished only I min. on the rouge wheel. J. Laskowski (Associate Professor, Dept, of Mineral Processing and Coal Preparation, Silesian University of Technology, Gliwice, Poland) -Referring to the papers by J. A. L. Campbell and S. C. Sun, I must say that I am very pleased to see that type of work, because it is the only way to progress towards an understanding of flotation mechanisms. All those interested in the science of the surface chemistry of coals would find these papers a valuable contribution to the literature. In their extensive research, the authors attempt to synthesize their findings into a theory of coal flotation. To do this, the zeta potential of bituminous coals and their lithotypes, as well as that of an anthracite coal, was measured and H+ and OH- ions were found to be potential determining ions. The measured ZPC of bituminous coals was at a pH range from 3.5 to 4.6 and for the anthracites between 2.0 and 4.5. The authors have pointed out that since the hydrophobicity is pH-controlled, the flotation mechanism should also be. The Campbell and Sun papers confirm a good many of the conclusions on surface properties of coals reported in recent years. It is noteworthy to point out that the ZPC found in the paper on bituminous coals was approximately pH 4, similar to the ZPC for the anthracite coal. In fact, we have been investigating different coals from low to high ranks. Thus, the plot of the pH for ZPC against rank could be derived and this curve-an electrocapillary one-indicates a pH near which the hydrophobicity of the coal surface should be at maximum. This can be proved by so-called salt flotation, which, in a sense, can be treated as method of surface charge measurement. It is obvious that the salt flotation experiment is possible when the native hydrophobicity of the mineral surface is high, e.g., when the solid surface does not have an orienting influence on an adjacent water layer and the hydration layers are controlled by the electrical double-layer potential. The addition of electrolyte or a change of pH which decreases the thickness of the stabilizing double-layer "opens up" the hydrophobic surface micro-area mosaic. Thereby the surface becomes hydrophobic and particles become floatable. The orienting influence of surface on hydration layer increases even after very slight oxidation and flotation is affected by it. It seems that such an explanation agrees reasonably well with those of Campbell and Sun.

This marks the third consecutive year production of crude oil has exceeded 5,000,000 bbl. and only once has this total been surpassed—in the year 1882, three years after the discovery of oil in Allegany County, when the annual production was more than 6,000,000 barrels. The most gratifying feature of the industry was the increased demand for lubricants, which resulted in advanced prices for crude. From a price at the beginning of the year of $1.68 per barrel, six advances totaling 82c brought the year&apos;s closing to $2.50 per barrel. A further increase in price on Jan. 1, 1940, to $2.75 per barrel places the local industry in a strong position for the year&apos;s operations. Most of the oil production of the state is now obtained by water-flooding, and the industry is practically stabilized. No new pools have been discovered in over 25 years, and border drilling indicates little prospect of extending the boundaries of the fields beyond their present limits. Deep drilling to the Oriskany sandstone in and close to the present oil fields hay failed to find oil in substantial amounts. Altogether, the oil pools of New York have produced during the 60 years that they have been exploited approximately 125,000,000 bbl. of oil. Following the flush production of 1882, the annual production gradually dccrcased and the year 1912 marked an all-time low of only 782,000 bbl. In 1919, as a result of flooding operations, a definite upward trend in oil production was recorded. During that year also the production of oil by water-flooding methods as approved by Legislative action. In the 21-yr. period beginning with 1919, oil production in the state ha.: totaled 60,338,000 bbl. Thus it will be seen that by the aid of flooding methods nearly as much oil has been produced in the last 21 yr. as in the preceding 40 yr., although the Iatter period included the flush production in 1882. As there is little hope of extending the area of the present producing oil fields of the state, producers and refiners are concerned regarding the future life of the fields. More than 90 per cent of the ore produced by stoping at McIntyre is mined by horizontal cut-and-fill methods. The remainder is mined by square set and fill. In the stopes on the upper levels, mill holes are spaced 80 ft. apart and usually it is feasible to mine the breast for the full distance between the mill holes in one operation and to break, clean out and fill without any support for the roof or walls, other than the odd crown bar or sprag. The ore is scraped to the mill holes by small (10 to 15 hp.) air-operated slusher hoists. No grizzlies are used over the chutes and care is taken to break up the big pieces beforehand. Fill usually is spread by tramming sand or waste in a one-ton car from the fill raise. Fill raises are driven parallel to the strike of the vein and are inclined at approximately 48°. In long stopes, where more than one fill raise is necessary, they are spaced about 300 ft. apart. It is sometimes necessary to stand square sets for a short distance each way under the brow of the fill raise. support needed increases and on the lower levels and in some wide stopes where closer support of the back is necessary, it has become standard practice to timber the stope with 12 by 12-in. timber. Rough timber sets consisting. of caps, tightly blocked to the back and supported on posts 7 ft. high, are placed at about 5 ft. intervals. These sets are generally salvaged from the lower breast before blasting and are used again on the upper slice after the fill has been placed. In general, two or three breasts may be broken down before mucking out and filling and the ground stands long enough to enable this to be done safely. On the lower levels and in certain wide stopes and in heavy ground, a more intermittent method must be used. Only one breast or even part of a breast can be blasted and the back must be timbered before the ore can be removed. In these cases, sill timbers 16 ft. long, supported at one end on posts from the fill and at the other end on pins inserted in holes drilled in the face, are used. Timber cribs 5 by 9 ft. built from the fill to the roof and tightly blocked to the back are used throughout the mine to reinforce both the timber sets and the square sets.

Metallurgists have, in the last ten years, overcome many difficulties of high zinc in lead blast-furnace slags. This problem was brought to the front at the close of the war, by the price obtained for lead and the high cost of labor, fuel, and flux. The Port Pirie plant of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters, Australia, early in 1919 had increased the zinc oxide in its blast-furnace slags from 13.5 to 20 per cent., at the same time reducing the iron oxide in the slag from 33.5 to 25.6 per cent. These results were obtained by the addition of 10 to 12 per cent. granulated slag to the roaster charge, improved conditions of the crushing, mixing, and roasting of the constituents of the sinter. By experiments and improvements, the practice at this plant has developed a normal slag that carries 22 per cent. zinc oxide, and at times runs as high as 33 per cent. zinc oxide, with only slight furnace trouble. The granulated slag is used not only as a diluent to the sulfur in the roaster charge, but on account of its value as a slag-forming material and the physical properties it imparts to the finished sinter. The ore is mixed with flux and given a double roast. All the first roasting is by sintering with the Dwight & Lloyd machines. The final roasting is performed partly by Dwight & Lloyd machines and partly by H. & H. pots. The charge to the blast furnace consists chiefly of the final sinter, slag shells, siliceous and non-bearing sulfur lead ores. High blast and ore columns are the practice. The greatest care is taken to obtain in the final sinter as low a sulfur content as possible. Attracted by the success of the Port Pirie plant, The Consolidated Mining & Smelting Co. of Canada, at Trail, B. C., in 1920 treated its crushed primary sinter with about 15 per cent. granulated slag. The Trail smelter at this time was short of ore and a large part of the charge to the roasters consisted of the zinc-plant residue having the following analysis: 12 to 16 per cent. lead, 12 to 16 per cent. zinc, and 25 to 30 per cent. iron. The lead in the final sinter was low and the physical condition was so bad that all the sinter had to be screened before it could be charged to the blast furnace. Discussion of the paper of Dorsey A. Lyon and Robert M. Keeney, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 80, August, 1913, pp. 2117 to 2149. C. D. WOODWARD, Butte, Mont.:-We constructed a small blast furnace, and used first carbon electrodes and an alternating current of about 50 to 75 volts. We were able to smelt the material which was fed to the furnace, but we did not carry on experiments far enough to see just exactly what the power consumption was and compare it with the amount of material treated. We found that the blast seemed to help materially in reducing our charge and cutting down our power consumption. There were several other experiments tried at the time, and I do not call to mind now just what they were. We were trying to do away with the carbon electrode and replace it with an iron one, and it also seems to me we tried to use the ore for an electrode; but I believe that the electric furnace in the reducing end is simply a question of British thermal units per kilowatt-hour compared with British thermal units in a pound of coke. Now, if a pound of coke costs us 0.5 c. and a kilowatt-hour costs us in the neighborhood of 1.5 c., I think there is a big advantage in using coke instead of the electrical current for copper reducing. We tried steam, and a number of other methods, to throw copper down, but it has been some time ago and I am not very familiar with them now. The outlook of the experiments did not seem to be very promising, and we took it more as a thermal problem than an electrical one. PROF. JOSEPH W. RICHARDS, South Bethlehem, Pa.:-Mr. Woodward has spoken of the question as a thermal problem. I would call attention to the fact that electric furnaces usually utilize the heat of the electric current at from four to ten times the efficiency with which the heat generated by fuel is utilized; so it will not do simply to compare by thermal units generated. Your total thermal units may cost much less from coke than from electricity, yet you will find the electrically generated thermal units utilized in a properly designed furnace from three to ten times more efficiently than in the combustion furnace. You must make that allowance is comparing the cost of thermal units generated electrically and thermal units from coke.

The physical properties, chemical behavior under thermal treatment, and fertilizer value of fluorine-containing pseudowavellite (hydrous calcium aluminum phosphate) that occurs as phosphate clay admixed with quartz sand in an extensive deposit near Bartow, Fla., were determined by experiments in laboratory, pilot-plant, and greenhouse. When the mineral was heated at 500°C, 80 pct of the phosphorus become citrate soluble. The heated product, however, deteriorates markedly under moist conditions such as obtain in the soil. EXTENSIVE beds of a soft aluminiferous phosphate lie in the Bartow-Pembroke region of Florida. Although the extent of the deposit is unknown, it is thought that the equivalent of at least five million tons of material containing 25 pct P,Os exists on one large mine property alone, and soft phosphates similar in nature are known to occur elsewhere in the state. This aluminum phosphate, unlike fluorapatite, is rendered fairly soluble in neutral ammonium citrate solution merely by heating it at a temperature below 600 °C, a property made the basis of a process patent by the junior author.&apos; The possibility of producing an available form of phosphorus from what has hitherto been a worthless natural phosphate prompted the Bureau of Plant Industry, Soils, and Agricultural Engineering to make a brief study of the Pembroke phos- phate during the war years with a view towards determining the optimal temperature for heat treatment and the reactions involved in the process. The results of this study supplemented by data and information furnished by the junior author are presented in this paper. Description of Natural Phosphate: The phosphate with admixed quartz sand and siliceous matter occurs as a low-grade (8 to 9 pct P2O5) clay-like material that can be beneficiated cheaply by making a water separation of the very fine material from the sand, floating off the fine material, settling the suspension to a thick slurry, and finally de-watering the slurry by vacuum filtration followed by drying. The product dried at 100 °C contains about 16 pct water and 25 pct P2O5, about 1/12 of which is citrate soluble. Partial analyses of representative samples of the crude ore and corresponding concentrate are given in table I. The concentrate is light yellow in color and even after being dried at 100°C sticks very noticeably to laboratory grinding and screening equipment. Under the microscope the ground material is predominantly light brown crystalline aggregates with index of refraction near 1.61. THE Whale Lode occurs in the main range of the Rocky Mountains, Park County, Colorado Territory, at Hall Valley. It has been opened up and worked to some extent by the Whale Mine, situated some 11,300 feet above the level of the sea. The mine, with 700 feet of the lode on either side of the discovery shaft, is the property of the Hall Valley Silver-Lead Mining and Smelting Company. The adjacent country rock is a compact, fine-grained gneiss ; its general strike is about north and south, dipping steeply to the west. In the immediate vicinity of the mine, the strata are very nearly vertical. The gneiss incloses numberless veins of a reddish granite, in which the feldspar largely predominates over the quartz and mica, the latter oftentimes being scarcely perceptible. As a general rule these granitic veins seem to more frequently follow the lines of stratification of the gneiss than otherwise. They are of varying width, some large, some small; the larger are from 5 to 6 feet wide. Gash veins of feldspar and quartz are also of very fre¬quent occurrence. The general trend of the lode is about northeast and southwest, intersecting the country rock at about an angle of 45° to its stratification. It dips to the northwest at an angle of 65°. I am unable to state accurately how far this lode has been traced upon the surface, but it is at least well known to extend entirely through the mountain upon which the mine is situated, and is traceable over the ridge by a hollow extending for some distance along the surface, in which the lode crops out. This hollow in the surface rock has probably been formed through decomposition of the vein matter by atmospherical influences. The width of the crevice is variable, generally between 5 and 10 feet; the pay vein varies from an inch, or less, to 36 inches. The vein is generally accompanied both on foot and hanging walls by a whitish, semi-decomposed rock, composed of quartz and decomposed feldspar, and in some places-where the process of decomposition has not reached as advanced a stage-a light-greenish or black mica. This rock, therefore, is in places composed of all the constituents of gneiss, and is undoubtedly nothing more or less than the same in a decomposed condition.
