Arizona: The San Xavier Indian Reservation mine is located approximately 2 ½ miles northwest of Asarco's Mission Mine southwest of Tucson. The company plans to produce oxide and copper-bearing siliceous ore at this operation, construction of which is scheduled for completion in 12 months. Asarco also plans a copper leaching and iron precipitation plant at its mine. The plant will leach 4000 tpd of oxide ore using sulfuric acid produced at the company's acid plant now under construction at Hayden. Copper precipitates will go to the smelter at Hayden. A drilling program at the Sacaton copper prospect in Pinal County, has disclosed two porphyry copper deposits. One deposit, mineable by surface mining, has approximately 17 million tons of material averaging 0.80% Cu. A deeper deposit suitable for under- ground mining has approximately 12 million tons averaging 1.5% Cu. Although Asarco intends to place this property in production, no startup date has been determined.

CRUDE oil production in the United States during 1938 reached approximately 1,214,355,000 barrels, an average of 3,327,000 barrels per day, or 5 per cent below the 1937 record output of 1,279,160,000 barrels. The decreased production did not prevent the stocks of all products from increasing to a total of 575,954,000 barrels by Sept. 30, an increase of 10,957,000 above the total on Jan. 1, or an average daily storage increase in all products of 40,135 barrels. The increase in total stocks was made entirely in the refined products, stocks of crude oil during the first nine months of 1938 having actually declined 7,155,000 barrels to 299,671,000 barrels, or an average daily decline of 26,209 barrels. MILITARY power stems from industrial power and industrial power in turn depends predominantly upon an ample and assured supply of mineral raw materials. It thus becomes the duty of mineral economists to collate the vast array of data and logical deductions in order to reach an unemotional judgment as to the ability of the Soviet economy to withstand the strain of prolonged military action on the modern scale. Russian publications, reports: and official speeches have been laboriously screened and analyzed. Since these are the sources of information for the lower echelons of the Soviet industrial organization itself, they carry factual data that can be pieced together to show the present-day pattern. Apparent contradictions and obvious distortions or omissions can often be rationalized on the basis of observations made by foreign engineers and consultants during the 1930'5 and by checking against the technical literature published before even so-called technical articles were riddled by bombastic and presumptuous claims.

IN the early stages of a titanium brazing investigation, binary titanium systems partially or completely known and fundamental metallurgical data were surveyed to select the pure metal most likely to be satisfactory for producing a ductile high strength joint. The phase diagrams for the purpose of this survey were classified into two groups: 1—systems with large solubility in ß titanium, but negligible solubility in a titanium, and 2—systems with large solubility in a titanium. Those metals with melting points believed to be too high or too low for titanium brazing (Tim = 1730°C) were eliminated from consideration. The melting points of vanadium, tungsten, tantalum, hafnium, zirconium, and the platinum group are too high and those of zinc, lead, cadmium, and tin are too low. The remaining metals were grouped as follows: 1—large ß solubility: Cr,¹ Mn,² Fe;³ CO,4 Ni,5 Cu,6 Be,' Si." —large a solubility: Al.9

Fluid flow through an igneous rock formation will occur mainly through fractures. A non-diffusing or slowly diffusing tracer (such as .5µ silica spheres identifiable under electron microscope) will arrive at a monitor well when enough fluid has been injected to displace the volume of water in the flow fractures between the injection and monitor wells. A rapidly diffusing tracer (such as NaC1)-will diffuse into the matrix blocks and so a volume of tracer nearly equal to the total fluid volume contained in the rock formation between injection and monitor wells must be injected before significant diffusing tracer arrival will be noted. The flow fracture porosity is typically one hundred times smaller than the total porosity of an igneous formation. The shift between diffusing and non diffusing tracer arrivals, together with the diffusional characteristics of the tracers, can define the diffusional accessibility of the matrix blocks of an igneous formation. A field test of these concepts and the problems encountered will be described.

THE territory covered in this discussion includes all the states west of the Mississippi river. Agriculture is expanding each year in this section, but until recent years the application of commercial fertilizers as an aid to crop production was not practised to any great extent. The use of commercial fertilizers has increased somewhat, but is still on a small basis as compared with the tonnages used else- where in the United States. During 1928 these western states used 665,100 tons of all classes of fertilizer as compared 'with 7,933,600 tons used in the whole United States; or this western area, compromising near- ly two-thirds the land area, uses about 5 per cent of the total fertilizer. To show how large a tonnage one state may consume, North Carolina for the year 192s used 1,349,360 tons of commercial fertilizer or about twice the amount used by 22 western states.

Silicon carbide (Sic), produced by heating rice hulls to elevated temperatures, contains a mixture of beta crystalline silicon carbide whiskers, particles, and unreacted carbon. The silicon carbide whiskers are 0.5 micron in diameter and 50 to 100 microns in length and have been found useful for reinforcing metal and other composite materials. The carbon can be removed by combustion, but this makes separation of the silicon carbide whiskers from particles difficult and a high grade whisker product cannot be made. However, a clean, high grade SiC whisker product can be obtained from the pre-burned converted rice hulls using physical separation processes that are based on differential wetting. Recovery of Sic whiskers from the pre-burned material was found to exceed 90%. A modification of the froth flotation process developed during this study is now being used commercially to separate silicon carbide whiskers and particles and to recover a high grade whisker product.

The Bureau of Mines devised a direct flotation method for treating low-grade carnallite (KCl*MgC12*6H20) and sylvinite (a mixture of KC1 and NaCl) ores characterized by a high content of water-insoluble impurities. The procedure consists of flocculation-depression of the insoluble slimes; decomposition leach (carnallite only); potash rougher, cleaner, and recleaner flotation; and final product leaching. The technique eliminates the necessity of removing the water-insoluble slimes by mechanical or flotation desliming. Laboratory results demonstrated that the direct flotation procedure, when compared with conventional techniques, yielded equivalent or improved flotation results with equal or less reagent consumptions. The direct flotation method recovered 81.6% of the solid phase KC1 from camallite ore and 79.7% of the KCl from sylvinite ore in final products containing 60.5 and 60.9% K2O, respectively. A flowsheet incorporating the described flotation procedure is presented.

Difficulties encountered in justifying replacements for overage mobile mine equipment at the Gay mine are common to most mining operations. More critical management reviews, resulting from ever rising capital expenses, increased such difficulties. These increased difficulties are especially apparent to those who are primarily operators and are not statisticians, mathematicians or computer men. The Gay mine is located 17 mi east of the town of Fort Hall in southern Idaho. This open pit operation annually supplies the J. R. Simplot Co. and the FMC Corp. with 1.5-2.0 million tons of phosphate ore. Stripping ratios average approximately three bank cubic yards of waste per ton of ore mined. The mobile mine equipment fleet consists of ten 24-cu yd scrapers; twenty-one 30-50-ton end-dump trucks; four 3%-4%- cu yd shovels; fifteen dozers in the D-8 and D-9 classes; and three road patrols. Equipment replacement is based on the results of evaluations made on individual units.

Whether we have occasion to think of it or not, an adequate and economic supply of energy fuels is vital to each of us. It is interesting to look ahead at the way in which fuels from supplementary sources will begin to enter into the energy mix to help meet the long-term national energy needs. From 1947 to 1965, the average annual rate of growth of energy consumption was 2.7%, with total energy demand in 1965 being equivalent to 54 quadrillion Btu's. During this short period of 18 years, the cumulative output of coal in the U.S. was 9.6 billion tons; natural gas, 193.5 trillion cu ft; and crude oil, 45.9 billion bbl. During the next decade and a half the nation's energy requirements are expected to grow at an average rate of 3.3% yearly, with consumption of energy expected to reach an annual rate of about 88 quadrillion Btu's by 1980, or 63% over the 1965 level.

In a recent investigation1 on the properties of chromium, and of Cr-10 wt pct W and Cr-5 wt pct Mo alloys at elevated temperatures, it was found that intercrystalline cavities developed in all of these materials during tensile creep at 950°C, and that the cavities led to intercrystalline fracture. There were some interesting differences, however, between the cavities produced in the pure metal and those in the alloys; these differences, moreover, were associated with a difference in ductility. The relevant conditions of creep testing are specified in the captions to Figs. 1 and 3. Chromium showed the presence of quite large intercrystalline cavities, Fig. 1, and these were more or less randomly distributed around the boundaries. The chromium alloys, on the other hand, showed the presence of both small cavities and cracks at the grain boundaries, Fig. 3; it is apparent that the cracks are formed by the linking together of the small cavities. MANY interesting papers, opportunity of seeing o1d friends, and an exposition showing all that is latest in equipment, all were factors in bringing a large crowd to Detroit during "Metal Week," October 2-6. The Institute's Iron and Steel and Institute of Metals Divisions held technical sessions at the Statler Hotel on October 4 and 5, and that hotel was also headquarters for the American Society for Steel Treating and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, both of which also had technical sessions. The American Welding Society and the Wire Association met at the Book-Cadillac Hotel, and the exposition was staged at Convention Hall, out Woodward Avenue. All in all it was a big week for men interested in metal working. One of them stated to your reporter on the train en route to Detroit that this was the one convention that he never missed, and doubtless others felt the same way about it.

IT was just five minutes past midnight, on Wednesday, Jan. 5, 1938, that Mrs. Cosgrove and I sailed from New York City. Our trip was to completely circle the globe, to cover over 40,000 miles and stop at thirty ports-from New York to Trinidad, to South America, via South Africa to the Orient, to India, to the Malay States, to Indo-China, the Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, and across the Pacific home via Honolulu. It is not my intention to make this a complete, technical study of coal or coal mining in the various countries that .we visited but more to outline the general in- formation that the mining engineer and coal operator would absorb in his travels. Coal is the universal fuel and is in use wherever there is commerce and industry. Even on our ship, which, like practically all ocean liners was an oil-burner, a considerable quantity of coal was used for cooking.

The U. S. Geological Survey has been actively engaged in work on coal for more than 50 years. During this long period we have released more than 300 publications containing information about coal and coal reserves, including details on the thickness, distribution, and quality of coal, and the structure and stratigraphy of the coal-bearing rocks. We have also cooperated with state surveys on many similar publications. For many areas these reports are the only reliable published data on our resources of coal. During the last several years we have substantially increased our activities above the wartime low. We now have field work in progress, or reports in preparation, on 13 detailed mapping projects distributed as follows: 1. Pennsylvania anthracite field 2. Casselrnan Basin, Md. 3. (with map on plate I.) THE coal-beds of Canyon City are situated six miles below the town, upon the Arkansas River. At this point the Rocky Mountains have thrown out from their main ridge two spurs. The one to the north, containing Pike's Peak and Cheyenne Mountain, is known as part of the "Rim Range;" the one to the west and south is known as the `1 Green¬horn Range." Against these syenitic mountains, the later rocks are piled and uplifted; at right angles to the direction of this main uplift is the axis of a lesser plication. On the north, west, and south, the pitch is steep, gradually flattening as it approaches the centre of the basin and rising again to the east at a pitch of about 5°, thus forming a perfect basin, the centre of which is only three miles east of the base of the Greenhorn Range.
