The Long Island Lighting Co. has operated an extensive monitoring system for over three years. Nearly 900,000 separate pieces of information have been recorded for a land area of some 600 sq miles, 15 miles north to south by 40 miles east to west. The data are composed of about a half million sulfur dioxide measurements at various locations, 290,000 of which were by the West-Gaeke method, about 160,000 pieces of weather data, and 220,000 measurements of sulfur dioxide as emitted from each of the power plant stacks on the system, all measured on an hourly basis and stored on computor cards and tapes. The computor has been programmed to collate stack emissions, weather information, and ground level sulfur dioxide measurements. The analysis shows that emissions from tall stacks do, indeed, contribute very little to ground level sulfur dioxide. For example, LILCO shows that its Northport plant contributes less than 2 ppb, hourly annual average. They also state that the plant converted to 100% natural gas or shut down, would reduce ground level sulfur dioxide by no more than 2 ppb.

Hole deviation has great consequences on mining economy, especially for long hole drilling technique. First of all the bore hole datas are concerned but also such factors as development, loss of ore and waste rock dilution are influenced. Hole deviation for sublevel open stoping is illustrated with examples from some mines. The deviations are indicated as mean values but also as standard deviation values, owing to their statistical distribution. The economic influence of the hole deviation is especially studied for steep, small lowgrade orebodies, mined with big hole blasting. Hole deviation can thus influence costs up to US$ 3-4 per ton for operating, development, losses of ore and rock waste dilution. This cost is of the same magnitude as the total operating costs for many sublevel stoping mines. The economic savings in accurate drilling are therefore substantial and are worth all attention.

Every engineer has occasion to trace or copy a map, plan, or other drawing on paper too thick for the ordinary way of using tracing-cloth or tracing-paper. When the figure is small and simple a copy may be made by holding the original against a window-pane, coverin& it with the paper, and tracing direct by the aid of the strong sunlight from outside. The need of utilizing this principle on a larger scale and in a more convenient position led Dr. J. C. Branner to plan the table of which the following is a description : This table was first made in the form of an adjustable glass-top table with a mirror beneath, in 1887, while Dr. Branner was State Geologist of Arkansas. Later it was modified as experience suggested until the form as here described was evolved. The device consists essentially of a drafting-table with a plate-glass top, upon which the original drawing and the paper are laid, and a mirror mounted underneath to reflect the light of the sky up through the drawing. The glass top is hinged and fitted with two arms and thumb-screws, so that it can be raised and fixed to any position, either inclined or horizontal. The mirror is pivoted and revolves about a horizontal axis, so that it may be tilted to any angle. The hood of cardboard or black cloth prevents the reflection of light from the tracing, and may or may not be attached to the table.

TRANSIENT potentials obtained in resistivity prospecting can be separated into two classes. The first is electromagnetic, has a comparatively short time constant, and increases in relative amplitude as the electrode separation is increased. These electromagnetic transient potentials, of which an excellent theoretical treatment is given by Yost,1 are the result of changes in the current and can be classed as differentiated signals. The second class is electrochemical, has a comparatively long time constant, and decreases in relative amplitude as the electrode separation is increased. The electrochemical signals are generated by the current flow itself and can be classed as integrated signals. The transient potentials due to electrochemical factors are the subject of this article. The phenomenon is referred to as induced polarization. Schlumberger2 was the first worker to observe induced polarization, but he was unsuccessful in attempts to apply the principles of induced polarization in electrochemical prospecting. Other workers, notably Bleil3 have studied polarization and in some cases pointed out its possibilities, but no theory has been presented that describes polarization and its time dependence adequately. It is the purpose of this discussion to present the essence of a theory to geo- physicists and to show that it leads to results consistent with experimental evidence. The theory on which this analysis is based has existed in electro- chemical circles since 1910.4

STUDIES relating to the behavior of coal toward oxygen may have for their purpose the determination of the fundamental factors that underlie spontaneous combustion, weathering and deterioration, and the general topic of storage, as well as those properties that have to do with the underlying principles of carbonization. There is also involved the possibility of developing information relating to the constitution of coal, or at least the chemical properties inherent in the type substances of which the coal is composed. It is the purpose here to record certain FIG. 1. results bearing on this latter idea of the chemical properties that characterize the main constituents of bituminous coal. The avidity of freshly mined coal for oxygen has long been known. What happens to the coal or to the oxygen is not so clear. Is the oxygen absorbed or chemically combined, and what are the conditions as to time, temperature, texture, or components that are most involved in the phenomenon?

The Library of the above-named Societies is open from 9 A.M. to 10 P.M. on all week-days, except holidays, from September 1 to June 30, and from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. during July and August. The Library contains about 55,000 volumes, including sets of technical periodicals and the publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive special attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining maps, and to furnish general information as to the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the information received may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will be sent more. promptly and in more usable shape. The members of the Institute can be of service to the Library by forwarding copies of mining reports, maps privately issued, and similar material, which will be classified, indexed, and made available to other members. Suggestions for additions to the Library, either by purchase or personal solicitation as gifts, will be welcomed. It is hoped that members while in the city will use the Library freely, and assurance is given that most careful service will be rendered to them.

Recent developments in the application of solvent extraction in hydrometallurgical processing make it desirable to reassess the present state of availability of suitable equipment for these applications. The range of solvent extraction applications now includes very large scale applications with a modest demand on separation performance (the treatment of some base metals) and applications in which the decisive factor is a very high requirement on separation performance. The extraction column to be described in the present paper is of the type in which mechanical energy is provided for the two- liquid system inside the column. The active elements for this are reciprocating sieve plates designed and mounted so as to uniformly load the driving mechanism, to eliminate vibration of the plant, to have sufficient control over the degree of dispersion of the dispersed phase, and to reduce axial mixing effects, which are highly detrimental to the separation performance of production-scale plant. The operating features of the reciprocating-plate column will be illustrated mainly by experimental results obtained on a 4" diameter column in the extraction of uranyl nitrate with TBP. Some mechanical features of the operation of reciprocating-plate columns will also be discussed.

IN the flotation of iron ores laurylamine derivatives have been used for considerable time.1, 2' To effect satisfactory separation of the gangue, pre-dominantly silica, from the iron oxide minerals, the addition of specific depressants for the iron oxides has been found necessary. Starches and starch products have been used for this purpose.V here is, however, very little published information on the effects of these materials and other variables on this process. In some cases it has been found that prior acid scrubbing and desliming are essential," and depending upon the efficiency of the subsequent washing step, there will be accompanying changes in pH. It was the object of this investigation to test and observe the effects of the above factor as well as to examine and compare the action of various starches and starch products. Ore Preparation The ore used in this experiment was a wash-ore tailing obtained from the western Mesabi range. Microscopic examination and x-ray analysis of the ore showed it to consist of hematite, goethite, and quartz. Physical properties of the iron minerals ranged from hard and crystalline to earthy and ocherous. The quartz grains were discolored either because of iron-oxide inclusions or because of a sur-face coating of iron oxide. The ore assayed 27.52

oriented crystals of iron and iron with 3, 5, and 6.25 pct Si were rolled to reductions of 10 and 70 to 97 pct at room temperature. Similarly oriented crystals were deformed in tension. Dislocation substructures of the deformed crystals were observed by transmission electron microscopy to determine the effect of silicon on the formation of substructures. Pole figures were obtained to relate orientation changes to substructure. When rolled 10 pct, the iron crystals and the 3 pct Si-Fe crystals formed cells, 1 and 0.2 u in diameter, respecliuely. Cells were absent in the higher-silicon crystals. Extended dislocations and possible stacking faults were observed in the 6.25 pct Si-Fe crystal rolled 10 pct and annealed at 650°C. The stacking-fault energy was estimated to be 20 ergs per sq cm. Rolling to 70 pct resulted in the formation of sub-bands (0.9 µ wide) ill the iron crystals and transition bands (containing 0.2-µ-wide subbands) in the 3 pct Si crystals. No subbands formed in the 5 pct Si-Fe crystal until it was ankzealed. SliP occurred on (112) planes ill tension. The slip traces on the 3 pct Si crystal were wary while those on the 5 pct Si crystal wvere straight. The strain-hardening coefficient for the 5 pct Si crystal was nearly zero. Cells did not form, at least at elongations up to 10 pet. The results suggest that cross slip of iron is restricted by additions of silicon beyond about 3 pct possibly by formation of immobile extended dislocations. IN a previous paper' the authors described the substructures developed in (100)[001]-oriented crystals of 3 pct Si-Fe which were rolled to reductions of 10 to 90 pct at room temperature. At low reductions (10 to 20 pct) cells, approximately 0.2 to 0.3 ja in diameter, were formed. The cell walls consisted mainly of edge dislocations. With increasing reduction (up to 50 pct) the cells were seen to elongate in the rolling direction. In certain regions of the crystal there were significant reorientations which were characterized as rotations about an axis normal to the (100) or rolling plane. These regions were called "transition bands". The regions in which there were no reorientations were called ('deformation bands". At reductions of 60 to 70 pct the elongated cells in the transition bands became sub-bands separated by low-angle tilt boundaries with angles of disorientation of about 2 deg. The elongated cell structure in the deformation band was replaced by a general distribution of dislocations. It was noted that the width of the subbands in the transition bands remained 0.2 to 0.3 µ; i .e., the width of the subbands was the same as the initial cell diameter for reductions up to at least 70 pct. From this, and from considerations of the mechanism of formation of the transition bands,' it was concluded that the subbands evolved directly from the initial cells. In order to check this conclusion, it was decided to examine the relationship between initial cell diameter and width of subbands produced by large rolling reductions. Cell size is known to be dependent upon the temperature of deformation.2,3 However, preliminary experiments with 3 pct Si-Fe crystals indicated that the change in cell size with increasing temperature of deform,ation was not sufficient for the present purpose. On the other hand, cell diameters generally reported for iron deformed at room temperature2'3 range from 1 to 2 p, a factor of 3 to 10 larger than the cells in 3 pct Si-Fe rolled to 10 pct reduction,' indicating the possibility of a marked dependence of substructure (at least in terms of cell size) on the amount of silicon in iron. Thus, the investigation was enlarged to include the study of the effects of varying silicon content on substructure in lightly rolled as well as in heavily rolled crystals of iron and iron with 3, 5, and 6.25 pct Si. The crystals used in this study all had the same orientation, (100)[001], with respect to rolling plane and rolling direction. These were rolled to reductions of from 10 to 97 pct and the substructures determined by electron transmission microscopy in both the rolled state and after annealing. In addition, stress-strain curves were obtained from (100)[001]-oriented crystals of iron and 3 and 5 pct Si-Fe to determine the effect of silicon on tensile properties. The dislocation substructure of the tensile specimens was also determined for Samples pulled to 2 and 10 pct elongation at room temperature for comparison with the substructures produced by rolling. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Crystals with 3, 5, and 6.25 pct Si were prepared by annealing 0.012-in.-thick sheets of high-purity Si-Fe in purified argon at 1200°C to effect growth

The phases in Fe-C alloys over a wide composition range have been studied after splal quenching from the liquid state. Binary alloys containing 0 to 5.1 wt pel C as /cell as a large number of ternary Fe-C-Si alloys with 2.5 to 5.0 wt pct C and 0.3 to 5.1 wt pct Si were attlong those sludied. Olher Fe-C-X alloys, zcilh X being Co, Cr, ,Wn, Ni, and Ru , were also inrestigated after splat quenching. At high carbon contents, a new hcp phase (designaled 6 phase, but different from e carbide) is retained upon splat quenching. The .fraction of this phase varies up lo 97 pcl for a Fe-4.K-1.9% alloy. The composition of the E phase ranges from about 3.8 10 4.8 wt pet C, and the corresponding laltice parameters increase linearly ulith carbon content, while the c/a ratio remains essentially conslc~nl. The E phrtse appears to he a solulion of carbon in E iron, the latler being nornially found only at high pressures. It is deduced that the unit cell of the E phase corresponds to the formula Fe12C3, and llzal il is relaled to tlie ordered slruclures 0.f 6 iron carbide and c iron nilride. The E phase is compared and contrasted to the olher known carbides and nitrides of iron and nickel. The retained carbon content of this phase increases with itlcreasing silicon in certain concentration ranges, reaching a maximum of 2.37 wt pct C itz a Fe-2.6C-4.OSi alloy. This is the highest carbon conten1 reLaitled in austenite to date. These high-carbon aus-tenites can be partially tm?zsforttled lo tnartensile hy severe deformation in the temperature range of — 190 to -50°C. TECHNIQUES for splat quenching from the liquid state have been utilized in numerous recent investigations to produce metastable phases in a variety of alloy systems. Among the several ways of splat quenching, the shock-tube method appears to yield the highest cooling rates1-3, 7, 8 and was adopted here. Estimated cooling rates attained in the present experiments ranged from 10' to 10 80Cper sec.' As a part of a research program on interstitial al- loy phases, the Fe-C system was selected for splat-quenching studies. It was hoped that splat quenching would allow high metastable supersaturations of carbon to be retained in solution. Also of considerable interest were the conditions governing the occurrence of the various intermediate phases upon solidification. The alloys investigated included both binary Fe-C compositions as well as six ternary Fe-C-X alloy systems. The known phases in the Fe-C system are summarized in Table I.* Only the ferrite and graphite are ent investigation.14 and is described in detail herein Table II summarizes corresponding data on Fe-N phases, which are also of interest here because of their similarity to the Fe-C phases. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Alloys were prepared by melting the elements. 99.9 pct purity, in an inert gas nonconsumable electrode arc furnace. The buttons. weighing about 5 g. were remelted twice. were then fragmented. and their interior surfaces were examined for uniformity: if any doubt existed. they were remelted again. Chemical analyses were performed on all the alloys. the accuracy being about k0.05 wt pct. At high temperatures, carbon-containing alloys react with alumina crucibles as follows: If the atmosphere in the splat-quenching furnace does not contain sufficient carbon monoxide the alloy can be depleted of carbon and contaminated with aluminum. Calculations and experimental observations showed that 50 to 100 torr CO partial pressure effectively blocked the above reaction in all the alloys investigated. The splat-quenching equipment in Figs. 1 and 2 provides for evacuation and back-filling with CO-Ar mixtures. The furnace is capable of operation up to 1650°C. and the gettering action of the graphite heating element reduces the oxygen partial pressure in the furnace atmosphere to below 10-5 torr, thus preventing oxidation of the specimens.

The effect of 1ow-temperature stabilization anneals on the structure of the 0 phase Au-Cd alloys and on the diffusionless transformations observed in these alloys was examined by X-yay diffraction techniques. A phase separation in the ß-phase region was proposed to account for the experimenta1 results. The effects of quenching from elevated temperatures on the transformation behavior of these alloys were shown to be consistent with the proposed mechanism. IT has been shown that the high-temperature ß phase (CsCl structure) of the Au-Cd alloy system transforms to a phase having an orthorhombic (D2) ß&apos; structurel1-3 for compositions near 47.5 at. pct Cd and a tetragonal (4/m, m, m) ß" structure* in the vicinity of 50.0 at. pct Cd. Both transformations are diffusionless, crystallographically reversible, and occur on cooling at about 60° and 30°C respectively. The temperature interval from the beginning to the end of the transformation is of the order of 5°C in each case. Although the transformations are normally athermal, some of them have been reported to occur isothermally.= wechsler6,7 has shown that the effects of quenching a 49.0 at. pct Cd alloy from elevated temperatures are consistent with the retention of a nonequilibrium number of lattice vacancies. Annealing of these quench effects results in a broadening of the X-ray reflections.8 After a suitable quench, the 47.5 at. pct Cd alloy transforms to a phase having not the p&apos; orthorhombic structure but another structure which has properties similar to that of the ß" tetragonal structure.5.9 This change in the type of transformation has also been obtained after long anneals in the ß-phase region at about 70oC10 The present investigation was primarily concerned with the structural changes accompanying the above transformation phenomena. The change in transformation product and accompanying physical changes during an anneal in the ß phase have been termed stabilization effects. Experimental Procedure —The results reported in this investigation were obtained with the use of a Norelco diffractometer fitted with a temperature-controlled cryostat. The specimen temperature was controlled to better than ± 0.l°C during the measurements. CrKa radiation monochromated electronically with the use of a scintillation counter and pulse height analyzer was utilized. Specimens containing 47.5 and 50.0 at. pct Cd were prepared by sintering filings obtained from homogenized ingots of the proper alloy composition. (Gold of 99.999 pct purity and cadmium of 99.98 pct purity were used). All heat treatments were carried out with the specimens capsulated in vacuum ( < 10 % mm Hg) or in a He-H gas mixture. The quenching technique used in these experiments was to drop the pyrex capsule which contained the specimen from the annealing furnace into water, the temperature of which was controlled. The pyrex capsule shattered on contacting the water resulting in a relatively rapid quench. After the heat treatment, the specimens were mounted in the diffractometer and were left undisturbed in the diffractometer specimen holder during each sequence of measurements. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS A) Low-Temperature Annealing—The transformations which were considered "normal" for these alloys were those obtained athermally during furnace cooling at approximately 50°C per hr after an elevated temperature anneal. Under these experimental conditions, the specimens were observed to transform to phases having structures whose diffraction patterns could be indexed as the ß&apos; orthorhombic structure for the 47.5 at. pct Cd and as the 0" tetragonal structure for the 50.0 at. pct Cd alloys. The transformation temperatures on cooling were approximately 60" and 30°C, respectively. Under the "normal" conditions both transformations were observed to go to completion, i.e., the entire volume of the ß phase was transformed to the product phase. In some specimens an extremely weak ß 110 reflection was observed at 20°C indicating that a small amount of retained ß was present. The effect of low-temperature annealing on the nature of the diffusionless transformations was examined for the 47.5 and 50.0 at, pct Cd alloy. The specimens were annealed in evacuated capsules at temperatures in the vicinity of 600°C (as specified in Table I) for 24 hr and were then cooled to 100°C at a rate of 50°C per hr. The specimens were then removed from the capsules and mounted in the diffractometer without allowing the specimen temperature to drop below 80°C. Annealing at the low temperatures was accomplished in the diffractometer by means of the cryostat which was mounted around the specimen. During the low-temperature anneals the lattice parameter, integral breadth of the reflections, and ratios of the integrated intensities of the fundamental and super lattice reflections for the 0 cubic phase were periodically determined. After annealing for the required time, the specimens were slowly cooled in the diffractometer and the diffraction patterns were recorded as a function of temperature. The specimens were cooled until the phase transformations were completed, following which the specimens were heated and diffraction

The most effective means of controlling the dust in the drilling of rock has been found after careful investigation to be collection of this dust at the source. By direct collection, all the dust is collected at the collar of the drill hole and deposited into suitable containers. Equipment for handling this work can be either portable or stationary, depending upon the particular requirements and the application. For most work the portable unit is found most advantageous, and with a capacity capable of handling two drills operating simultaneously. Such a portable unit would consist of a metal cap, or hood, placed against the face of the rock through which the drill steel would be inserted. This hood is connected by a flexible rubber hose to a primary separator, where the bulk of the dust is collected. From here a second length of hose connects to the secondary stage of separation, where the fine particles of dust are collected and which is built in as an integral part of the vacuum producer. Hoods are adapted for vertical, horizontal or stope drilling, and mounted so as to become immediately effective when collaring the hole and remain in place continuously. Such dust collectors can be used with either wet or dry drilling. However, in view of the fact that when drilling dry and using the dust collector, the dust count can be maintained within safe limits, wet drilling becomes unnecessary. Furthermore, it has been found that when using the dust collector not only has the dust hazard been eliminated, but also increased footage can be obtained. Samples taken under a wide variation of conditions indicate that where the dust count required is below five million particles per cubic foot, dust collectors will be required. Opreators, in general, accept the use of this additional equipment favorably, and it is generally felt that such means of collecting the dust will soon be universally adopted. Tests made by the Connecticut Department of Health Bureau of Occupational Diseases show dust counts reduced from 203 million particles to 6.05 million by the use of the dust collector, when drilling dry.

The metric system is now in official use in the Republic of Mexico, having been adopted by the Government in the year 1862. Athough it is used to compute all customs and other duties to be paid to the General Government, in the measurement of public and private lands arid in all freight and other transactions on the railroads, and is taught exclusively in the public schools, the system has made but slight head way among the people,and has not succeeded in displacing the old-time weights and measures, which are still used in ordinary commerce. The latter were founded on old Spanish models, but, owing to the inexactness of the first standards and to subsequent changes, differ at present very widely from their originals. As to local modifications, weights are the same all over the Republic, but measures of the same name differ greatly in capacity in different States, and even in neighboring towns. The value in the metric system here assigned to each denomination of the old weights and measures is that fixed by the Mexican Government at the time of the adoption of the metric system. The equivalents in American weights and measures were calculated by me from data found in Trautwine&apos;s Pocket-Book as to the comparison between the French and American weights and measures, and are believed to be correct. I shall be thankful for early notice of any error that may be detected, that it may be corrected before the final publication of this paper in the Transactions. Linear Measures. Kilometers. The various modifications of the art of photography have become within the last few years the indispensable allies of every art and science. But, before the introduction of the process which is the subject of this paper, there was, so far as I am aware, no satisfactory means by which certain photographic negatives could be made to yield, without the intervention of the skilled draughtsman, electrotypes suitable for surface-printing. I refer to negatives taken from originals, such as natural objects, or or lithographs, in which the lights and shadows are not represented exclusively by lines and dots, such as can be photo-engraved. The greater usefulness to engineers and manufacturers of electrotypes as compared with lithographs is evident. The electrotypes can be kept indefinitely and used in the production of many thousand copies. They can be duplicated at trifling cost. They can be placed for printing together with the " forms " of type, or included in these, upon an ordinary press. Finally, they are cheap, when made mechanically from a suitable original. Various methods have been adopted for the preparation of such a secondary original (as it might be called) in cases where the first original is unsuitable for photo-engraving. Thus, for instance, portraits have been produced in electrotype from ordinary photographs as follows: A large negative is made of the original (say a carle de visite of a person deceased), and a proof taken, but not " fixed." Over this proof a skilled artist draws the portrait with a pen, producing a picture which resembles a line-engraving. The photographic proof, which has served merely to guide the artist, is now obliterated, and the pen-and-ink drawing is photo-engraved. Electrotypes thus produced often retain the likeness in a wonderful degree, and give spirited and satisfactory pictures. 1 may instance, as examples, which many will recollect, the portraits of our deceased members,

Investigation of the tensile properties of silver based aluminum alloy crystals was undertaken because it appeared attractive for studying strengthening effects due to Suzuki locking with minimum complication. Yield drops were observed in all alloy crystals (1, 2. 3. 4, and 6 at. pct Al) after strain aging at room temperature. No yield drops were found in similarly grown and tested silver crystals. The yield effects are attributed to Suzuki locking but the major portion of the solid solution strengthening to other mechanisms. INVESTIGATION of the tensile properties of single crystds of silver alloyed with aluminum was undertaken because it appeared to be a system in which segregation at stacking faults associated with partial dislocations1 would be the dominant factor in anchoring dislocations. First, silver and aluminum have closely similar atomic sizes and thus solute atom locking of a dislocation due to elastic interactions should be unimportant. Second, while both X-ray2 and thermodynamic3 investigations show short-range ordering in silver-based aluminum alloys, the degree of local order is quite small (X-ray measurements give v = EAB - 1/2(EAA + EBB) = - 0.025 ev and thermodynamic measurements give v r -0.007 ev) and should not be important in strengthening dilute alloys. Third, the stacking fault energy of silver is probably low (as indicated by the profusity of annealing twins) and is very likely diminished further and quite rapidly by aluminum additions since the A1-Ag phase diagram shows a stable hexagonal phase at only 25 at. pct Al. Also, a careful investigation in this laboratory4 has shown that the ratio of twin to normal grain boundaries in recrystallized alloys increases with aluminum content. Thus, with minimum complication from other factors, Ag-A1 alloys seem attractive for studying strengthening effects due to segregation at stacking faults of extended dislocations. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD Single crystals measuring 250 by 5 by 1.5 mm of pure Ag (99.99 pct) and Ag-A1 alloys (A1 of 99.999 pct purity) of nominal compositions* 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 at. pct were grown in high-purity graphite molds from the melt under a dynamic vacuum (1 x l0-5 mm Hg). The technique consisted of moving a furnace having a hot zone (which melted about 0.5 cm of alloy) over a horizontal, evacuated quartz tube con- taining the mold and alloy at a rate of 3/8 in. per hr. Chemical analysis showed roughly the first inch of the crystal to be solute poor, the last inch solute rich; and the center section uniform in composition within the sensitivity of the analytical method (± 0.2 at. pct Al). The center section of the crystal was cut into five specimens. Gage lengths of reduced cross section, measuring from 1.5 to 2 cm in length, were mechanically introduced by means of jeweler&apos;s files and fine abrasive cloth with the crystal firmly held in polished steel guides. One-third of the cross section was then removed by etching and electro-polishing, the crystals were all subsequently annealed for several days at 850°C in a dynamic vacuum (<1 x 10-5 mm Hg) and furnace cooled to 200°C. The crystal orientations were determined using the usual back-reflection Laue technique. The Laue spots were sharp and of the same size as the incident beam. However, microscopic examination showed the crystals to contain substructures with subgrains of the order of a micron in diameter. The details of this substructure are presently under investigation. Tensile testing was done with a table model Instron using a cross-head speed of 0.002 in. per min. For testing at various temperatures the following media were used: 1) 415oK, hot ethylene glycol; 2) 296ºK, air, acetone, water; 3) 273ºK, ice water; 4) 258ºK, ethylene glycol "ice" in ethylene glycol; 5) 200°K, dry ice in acetone; 6) 77ºK, liquid nitrogen. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS A) Yield Behavior—A portion of an interrupted stress-strain curve for a 6 at. pct A1 crystal of the indicated orientation tested at room temperature is shown in Fig. 1. Initially, at (a), there is a small, gradual yield drop of about 10 mg per sq mm2. However, on stopping the test, and aging for a few minutes at (b), a sharp yield drop is found. Aging for longer times at (c) and (dl results in larger yield drops (and larger AT&apos;S). At, defined in Fig. 1, is usually larger than the yield drop by about 20 pct; however, this increase in the lower yield is transient since extrapolations of the flow stress curves join as may be seen from Fig. 1. (Both Laue and low-angle scattering photographs revealed no evidence of precipitation in a strain-aged 6 at. pct A1 crystal.)

INTRODUCTION In early 1979 Jim Walter Resources, Inc. (JWR) of Brookwood, Alabama approached TMCI Construction, Inc (TMCI) to make a proposal on a program that involved the sinking of up to 10 ventilation shafts of approximately 6.7 m (22 ft) diameter and ranging in depth from 500 to 700 m (1650 to 2300 ft) for the JWR coal mines in Alabama. At this time TMCI was already constructing the first spiral underground bunker (capacity 2000 tons) in North America for the JWR organization at their No. 4 mine in Alabama. The TMCI proposal was based on the use of the mos modern large diameter shaft boring machine rather than sinking the shafts using the conventional drill blast-muck technique. The proposal was made based o: the experiences by the parent company, Thyssen Schachtbau, which has been using this type of machin in Germany for shaft boring since 1971. As a result of the TMCI proposal JWR issued a purchase order to TMCI for the construction of four 6.7 m (22 ft) diameter, concrete lined, unfurnished ventilation shafts ranging in depth from 500 to 700 (1650 to 2300 ft). An order was thus placed with WIRTH Machinen- and Bohrgeraete Fabrik GmbH, in Germany for the manufacture of a model 650/850 E/Sch "Schachtbohrmaschine" (Vertical Shaft Borer = V-mole which arrived on site in Alabama in early 1981. The first V-mole GSB 450/500 was introduced in Germany in 1971 and was capable of enlarging in one step a pre-drilled 1.2 m (4 ft) pilot hole to 4.5 - 5.0 m (14.7 - 16.4 ft). This machine has sunk 9 staple shafts and deepened one surface shaft for a total of 2360 m (7740 ft) of shafts. On the last shaft boring operation in 1978 the machine was converted as an experiment to drill without a pilot hol using a hydraulic pumping system to remove the cutting debris. A second generation machine, the SB VI 500/650, was introduced in 1977 for enlarging the pilot hole to a range of 5.0 - 6.5 m (16.4 - 21.3 ft) diameter. This machine is still in operation and has already drilled well over 2000 m (6500 ft) of shaft. The third generation of V-mole, the SB VII 650/85( for diameters from 6.5 to 8.5 m (21.3 to 27.9 ft) was: commissioned in May 1980 and has been used for two surface shaft deepenings totalling 606 m (1990 ft) with another scheduled for 1982. The main advantages favouring the use of such V-moles were identified as: 1) A reduction in manpower to the crew required in a conventional shaft sinking operation. 2) A considerable reduction in time to complete a shaft compared to conventional techniques. 3) The use of the V-mole eliminates many of the hazards encountered in conventional sinking. Based on the successful performance of the first three V-moles in Germany, Thyssen Schachtbau decided to employ this principle abroad. In 1980 a second machine of the third generation was built and is now operated by TMCI Construction, Inc. in Alabama. The first shaft was completed at the end of 1981 and this paper describes the method of operation including some unique aspects not attempted on prior V-mole operations and some of the statistics arising out of the experiences during the first shaft boring operation. THE NO. 7 MINE FAN SHAFT SITE Jim Walter Resources, Inc. was formed in 1970 to exploit the coal field in Alabama on the southern tip of the Appalachian coal field. The coal reserves amount to around 650 million tons of mainly good quality coking coal of which about 350 million tons are to be extracted over the next 30 years. Shaft sinking and preparatory work began in 1972, and at present 6 mines are producing around 5.4 million t.p.a. Annual production is to expand to 10 million t.p.a. as soon as possible, and the ventilation shafts to be sunk by TMCI play a vital role towards attaining this goal. The first shaft site is located at the No.7 mine, near Brookwood, Alabama. The actual location of the shaft relative to the production shafts is shown on the mine plan (Fig. 1), which also shows the room-and-pillar extraction system used at present. The mine plan further shows the conveyor route used for the muck removal. The geological survey showed that the strata consisted of horizontal layers of mainly sandstone, sandy shale and shale interspersed with several coal seams. The seam being extracted at the No. 7 mine is a combined seam made up of the Blue Creek and Mary Lee seams at a depth of 513 m (1682 ft) and having an average seam thickness of about 2 m (6 ft). At the beginning of September 1980 the surface site preparation and pre-grouting work was completed by JWR, and TMCI was able to commence with Stage I of the shaft sinking program - the drilling of the pilot hole.

The effect of strain rate and temperature on the tensile flow stress of a polycrystalline bcc alloy of magnesium containing 14 wt pct Li and 1.5 wt pct Al was investigated for strain rates of 3.13 x lom5 to 3.13 x 10-3 per sec over the range from 20° to 300°K. From about 180° to 300°K the alloy exhibited an ather-ma1 deformation behavior where the flow stress was independent of strain rate and increased only slightly with decreasing temperature. At lower temperatures the flow stress was strongly strain-rate- and temperature-dependent, characteristic of deformations controlled by thermally activated mechmzisms. The activation volume for thermally activated plastic defornzation was between 5 and 30 cu Burgers vectors, independent of plastic strain. This low-temperature thermally activated deformation behavior was found lo be in satisfactory agreement with the theoretical dictates of the Dorn-Rajnak1 formulation of the Peierls mechanism where deformation is controlled by the rate of nucleation of pairs of dislocation kinks over the Peierls energy barriers. SEVERAL studies of the low-temperature thermally activated deformation of bcc metals and alloys (molybdenum,1 tantalum,1 Fe-2 pct Mn,2 Fe-11 pct MO,3 and AgMg4) have revealed that the strain rate is controlled by the activation of dislocations over the Peierls-Nabarro energy hills. Although there is some uncertainty as to the nature and effect of solute atom-dislocation interactions during low-temperature deformation of bcc metals, it has been concluded by Dorn and Rajnak,1 Conrad,1 and Christian and Masters6 among others that overcoming the Peierls-Nabarro stress which arises from the variations in bond energies of atoms in the dislocation core as it is displaced is the probable mechanism controlling low-temperature deformation. The purpose of this research was to investigate the low-temperature plastic deformation of the bcc alloy Mg-14 wt pct Li-1.5 wt pct A1 to determine if the behavior of this alkali metal alloy might be analogous to that for other bcc metals. This alloy was selected because of its availability and its current industrial importance as a lightweight material for aircraft and aerospace applications. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Polycrystalline tensile specimens having cylindrical gage sections 2 in. long by 0.2 in. in diam were machined from as-received alloy sheet stock of Mg-14 wt pct Li-1.5 wt pct Al. Specimens were annealed in an argon atmosphere at 423°K for 4 hr and maintained in a kerosene bath together with the sheet stock to prevent corrosion. The resulting specimen microstructure consisted of a coarse uniform dispersion of incoherent precipitate MgLi2Al particles7 in a bcc 0 phase matrix having an average grain size of 150 p. Prior to testing the specimens were chemically polished in dilute hydrochloric acid. Comparison of tensile properties and microstructures of specimens cut from center and edge sections of the sheet stock revealed no effects of inhomogeneities in the sheet material. Tensile tests were performed on an Instron machine at crosshead speeds corresponding to tensile strain rates of 1.56 x 10-5 and 1.56 x 10"3 per sec. Stresses were determined to ±2 x 106 dynes per sq cm and strains to within ±0.0001. Average values of shear stress t and shear strain y reported were taken as one half the tensile stress and three halves the tensile strain, respectively. Flow stresses were taken at 0.05 pct strain offset. Test temperatures down to 77°K were obtained by immersing the specimens in constant-temperature baths. Lower-temperature tests were performed in a liquid helium cryostat to within ±2°K of the reported values. Prior to testing at the various temperatures and strain rates all specimens were prestrained at 2 35°K at a shear strain rate of 3.13 x 10-5 per sec to a stress level of 0.606 x 10&apos; dynes per sq cm to obtain a uniform initial state. Additional tests were made to determine the effect of changes in strain rate and strain on the flow stress by rapidly changing the crosshead motion during testing. Shear moduli of elasticity, needed for analyses of the data, were obtained at several temperatures by a common technique of determining the resonant frequencies of vibrations of rectangular test specimens. 11) EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Fig. 1 shows the experimentally determined flow stress vs temperature for two strain rates. Two distinct regions of behavior are evident. Below about 180°K the strong increase in flow stress with increased strain rate and decreasing temperature indicates that deformation is controlled by a thermally activated dislocation mechanism. At higher temperatures an athermal region is evident where the flow stress is independent of strain rate and only slightly dependent on temperature. At the conclusion of my paper on the same subject read at the Boston meeting of the Institute, I offered to send some of sample No. 2 to any chemist who wished to analyze it. Eight chemists wrote to me for samples; so far I have received results from five. I give these results in a table (on the following page), together with the results previously obtained: As to the chemists and their methods : K is an iron-works chemist whom I only know by correspondence; lie writes: "No. 27(13.64) was obtained by the method I generally use, as follows : Dissolve 0.8 grams spiegel in hydrochloric acid and a little potassium chlorate, in a half-liter flask. Boil off most of the acid, add ammonia in slight excess, redissolve in acetic acid, using rather more than is really necessary, and then add 8 or 10 grams of sodium acetate and make up to the mark with warm water. Boil hard for fifteen minutes, then allow to settle (cool?), until the liquid reaches the mark, and withdraw 300 C.C. of the nearly clear liquid. Add to this an excess of hydrochloric acid, evaporate to dryness, take up with hydrochloric acid and water, and separate the iron by two precipitations with ammonia (I have often tested the ferric hydrate for manganese, but have never found any, if the separation by ammonia was properly made). Finally, precipitate the manganese as phosphate." Nos. 28, 29 (13.35, 13.07) were by Ford&apos;s method." No. 30 (13.50) was by Troilus&apos;s method He writes, " I may add the results are quite as good as I expected, although for any element except manganese, they are not close enough for anything like accurate work." A metallurgical process to be economically successful must be carried on under proper conditions of control and equipment. The question of equipment is always of primary importance. In the distillation process for the recovery of zinc by retorting, the retort is the all-important piece of equipment. Each retort in a working blóck must function as a separate unit. Over-all block efficiency is the result of the ability of the individual retort to withstand the severe conditions of operation for a maximum period of time. Therefore retort manufacture has been an ever present problem with the operator of a zinc-retorting plant. During recent years the zinc-plant operator has been faced with rapid changes in the character of the ores and concentrates. Operating costs have increased as a result of the introduction of the flotation process and the amount of flotation concentrates to be handled. To counteract increasing costs, the operator has found it necessary continually to attempt heavier loading of retorts, until a 45 to 50-lb. charge per cubic foot of retort space has become common practice. Heavy loading has brought about severe firing conditions, which, in turn, have emphasized the necessity for further improving the quality of the retort. Increasing percentages of detrimental impurities in the retort charges have also added to the operator&apos;s difficulties. Amarillo Silicon Carbide Retorts At the Amarillo plant of the American Smelting and Refining Co. a retort made of a suitable plastic clay grogged with silicon carbide has been found to best meet the present-day requirements. Retorts of this kind have been in use at Amarillo for 8 years and have shown an average furnace life of approximately 175 calendar days. The Amarillo retort is cylindrical in shape and after burning is approximately 83/4 in, inside diameter by 60 in. over-all length. The wall thickness is 136 in., except for the butt of the retort, which is approximately 2½ in. thick. The retort mud has a shrinkage of 3 per cent, or approximately % in. per foot. The silicon carbide retort after being properly dried weighs about 211 lb. When the retort is fired and ready to go into use the weight decreases to approximately 203 lb.
