GOLD was discovered in Gold Canyon on May 15, 1849. Following this discovery placer miners worked the gravels in the canyon for-ten years, finally discovering the outcrop of the Comstock lode at Gold Hill in May, 1859, and in Ophir ravine on June 12 of the same year. Before long large quantities of gold and silver, were taken from the lode and one of the West's most spectacular mining booms drew thousands of fortune seekers to Nevada. After a long period of production activity waned and in late years little mining was done. The recent reopening of the old mines and the discovery of ore in other parts of the vein, and in other veins of the district, has led to a revival of interest in the Comstock. Virginia City, Gold Hill, and Silver City, situated along the great vein system, are enjoying a period of prosperity and a large influx of people.

THE Corporation operates concentrators in four camps: Casapalca. Morococha, Cerro de Pa-co, and Mahr. The present concentrator at Cerro de Pasco is the newest having been completed in 1943. and that at Casapalca the oldest, having been built originally as a gravity concentrator, in 1889. Prior to 1925 the Corporation's milling operations were confined to the beneficiation of silver-bearing copper ores, and treatment of these ore: by flotation was started in 1918. Although fairly large deposits of complex, fine-grained lead-zinc ores existed, little progress had been made in the treatment of such ores--in Peru or elsewhere-until the early 'twentics. The Casapalca concentrator began the selettive concentration of complex leadzinc ores by all-flotation methods in 1925, or contemporaneously with the commercial development of selective lead-zinc flotation in the United State:.

Nothing is more important to life-plant and animal-than phosphate. Its compounds are essential to the energy functions of all living systems and for the formation of bones and teeth. Animals get their phosphate from eating plants and other animals, or domestically from feed supplements. Plants get their phosphates from the soil. Man's most important use of phosphate is for fertilizer; approximately 95% of the world's phosphate rock production is consumed by fertilizers. Most of the balance is processed in electric furnaces into elemental phosphorus, the important raw material for making industrial phosphates. Recovery of uranium from phosphates has been possible but not widely used. However, recent significant developments have generated interest in such recovery in the US and elsewhere. Phosphate occurs in all igneous and sedimentary rocks, and in all fresh and salt water. However, economical recovery is limited to deposits where natural concentration of the phosphate mineral has occurred. Occasionally natural concentration is great enough that the material can be used as mined; generally, however, the ore is low grade_ and must be concentrated. Phosphate rock is produced in 31 countries. Fig. 1 shows the location of major phosphate rock producers as well as some of the known phosphate deposits not yet in production. In the last decade the world phosphate industry has experienced steady growth. World production rose from 98 Mt of phosphate rock in 1973 to 140 Mt in 1982. Fig. 2 shows the growth curve of rock production and graphically illustrates the almost straight-line rise since 1945 in both US and world production. Table 1 gives the breakdown, by countries, of world rock production, 1974 through 1979. Table 2 shows US rock production by producing areas. Definitions of Terms Used in the Phosphate Industry Phosphate Rock: Commonly called rock in sedimentary deposits and apatite in igneous deposits. Those expressions generally include any mined, or mined and beneficiated, fluorine-containing calcium phosphate used as the raw material for the next stage of manufacturing. The average phosphate content in rocks is 0.1 to 0.2% P2O5, as documented by McKelvey (1973). About 200 minerals contain more than 1 % P2O5. However, the important mineral in igneous rocks is fluorapatite, [Ca5 (PO4),3 F], containing about 42% P205 and 3.8% F2; in sedimentary rocks the important mineral is francolite, a carbonate fluorapatite containing up to 2% molecular CO2. Both are in the apatite family of minerals. Most phosphate rock, whether beneficiated or not, is a fine-grained material. The expression phosphate rock has no relation to its phosphate content. For example, phosphate rock from Idaho used in the production of phosphorus may contain about 24% P205, whereas rock from Morocco may contain 36.6% P2O5. Phosphorite: A deposit of phosphate directly or indirectly of sedimentary origin, which is of economic interest. ThE published U-Ru equilibrium diagram indicates the existence of six intermetallic compounds in this system.' The structure of only two of the compounds, u2Ru2,3 and URU3,4 have been identified. This communication reports on the crystal structure and density of Uau3, which is formed by a peritectoid transformation at 1025° ± 5°C: U3Ru4 + U3Ru5 = U2Ru3. An alloy with the stoichiometric formula U2Ru3 was prepared by arc melting electrolytic uranium and ruthenium of 99.9 pct purity on a water-cooled copper hearth under an argon atmosphere. After homo-genization at 1000°C for 3 days, a metallographic examination revealed that the peritectoid transformation was complete and less than 5 pct of a second phase was present. A powdered sample, obtained by crushing the brittle compound, was annealed for 1 hr at 1000°C and air-cooled. Debye-Scherrer patterns were obtained with filtered CrKa, FeKa, CoKa, or CuKa radiation. The X-ray patterns of U2Ru3 weFe indexed as an fcc structure with a. = 12.895 0.00lA. The unit-cell constant and its standard deviation were calculated by a computer program described by Mueller, Heaton, and Miller.5 The density, measured by an immersion method, was 14.45 g cm-3. A calculated density of 14.48 g cm-3 was obtained on the assumption that twenty-four formula units (120 atoms) comprise a unit cell. The space group is either oh7 Fd3m, or the less symmetric, T4h, Fd3, since reflections indexed as hk0 with h + k + 4n are absent. All values of h2 + k2 + 12 permitted by both space groups are listed in Table I together with dc, do, and I. values. The calculated d spacings were obtained by the computer program of Mueller, Meyer, and simonsen.6 The observed d spacings above 0.77A were obtained from X-ray" patterns prepared with CuKa radiation, above 0.90A with CoKa radiaaion, above 0.98A with FeKa radiation, and above 1.16A with CrKa radiation. An attempt was made to identify the crystal structure of U2Ru3 by comparison with published data on other A2B3 compounds. A recent compilation7 of intermetallic compounds lists thirty-two structure types with the A2B3 stoichiometry. Only two of the structure types are fcc and they are Sb2O3(r), senarmontite, with 16 Sb2O3 per unit cell, and In2Te3 for which several structures have been proposed.8 However, the two cases cited do not have twenty-four formula units in the unit cell. We therefore, cannot identify UPRU3 with any of the other known A2B3 compounds. Ternary alloys were made in which 5 at. pct Os, Rh, or A1 were substituted for 5 pct of the Ru in U2Ru3. SOLUTION of a solid metal or alloy in a molten metal bath is used daily in melting operations, extractive metallurgical processes, and in brazing. It is generally recognized that temperature, time, agitation, and the composition of the solute metal and the solvent bath all affect solution rate. However, there is little information available in the literature on the kinetics of the process or the relative effect that these variables have on solution rate. In connection with an aluminum brazing study, data on the solution of aluminum in an A1-Si* bath to promote rapid solidification. The chemical analyses were made on drillings taken from the cast plates. The results of this work are listed in Table I. The thermal-analysis data were obtained on 200 gram samples cooled at approximately 1.5" per min. A calibrated chromel-alumel couple was used. The thermal arrests were recorded autographically on a General Electric photoelectric potentiometer recorder. The instrument was calibrated to 22.5 pct. The thermal emf was bucked with a Leeds and Northrup semiprecision potentiometer so that 1 mv represented the full scale of the GE recorder. Referring to Table I, it will be noted that the analytical results tend to be lower than the intended compositions by about 0.3 pct Si in the higher ranges. In view of the known difficulties in obtaining accurate silicon determinations by wet analysis when the silicon content is high and in view of the care that was employed in weighing and preparing the alloys, the intended compositions are believed to be more accurate than the analyses. Furthermore, when the thermal-arrest data are plotted against the intended compositions, a smooth curve is obtained, as shown in Fig. 1. This is not the case when the data are plotted against the analytical results. It will be noted from Table I that the 12.5 pct Si alloy (melt 4) showed a primary arrest at 577.6"C and the eutectic at 576.l°C. The metallographic examination of this chill-cast plate sample showed a small amount of primary silicon. These results, Fig. 1, place the eutectic at slightly less than 12.5 pct Si and are in rather good agreement with the unpublished Hanford data. In all of the subsequent work, the composition of the A1-Si dipping baths was determined by thermal analysis (spread between the primary arrest and the eutectic temperature) employing 12.5 pct Si and 577.2 °C as the composition and temperature of the eutectic. Material Preparation and Selection of the Techniques: At the beginning of this work, it was anticipated that, owing to oxide film present on the surface of the aluminum, difficulty would be encountered in obtaining rapid uniform wetting of aluminum specimens dipped in the A1-Si bath. The following etchants were investigated as possible methods of providing a thin uniform oxide film on the specimen surface: 1—phosphoric acid (H³O4), 2—fluoboric acid (HBFI), 3—sodium hydroxide (NaOH), and 4—hydrofluoric acid (HF). Tests with sheet .specimens (2x½x0.06 in.) of 2s aluminum prepared with these etchants indicated that the fast uniform wetting required for this work could not be obtained if any oxide film existed on the specimen surface. TO date there has been but limited interest in alloys of 80 to 95 pct Co and Fe with or without other additions. In 1932, S. R. Williams' reported practically zero magnetostriction for the 90 pct Co-10 pct Fe alloy. This same composition was used for pole pieces to control the magnetic field in magnetrons operating at high temperatures.' In 1947, a 90 pct Co, 9.5 pct Fe, and 0.5 pct Mn composition was investigated3 for use in ballast lamps because of its high temperature coefficient of resistance. Recently, as part of a survey of ductile and malleable magnetic alloys capable of being processed to thin gages for possible applications in memory devices, the high Co-Fe alloys have been re-examined to determine their fabricating and magnetic characteristics. Alloys from 80 up to 95 pct Co and Fe with and without additions such as vanadium were prepared. In general these all had excellent ductility and malleability. Wire was drawn to thin gages without difficulty and fine hard-drawn wires flattened to 2) The phenomenon may have potential in estimating the carbon content of molybdenum. A given solution-treating temperature and cooling rate could perhaps be calibrated so that the area fraction of surface covered by carbide could be interpreted in terms of carbon concentration. By segregating to the surface, a big "magnification" of the carbon content is obtained, which should make the method cheap, direct, and sensitive and, therefore, perhaps of interest to the molybdenum industry. This work was conducted at Battelle Memorial Institute. Similarly, strip was cold-rolled as much as 99.75 pct reduction to a 0.25 mil thickness without intermediate anneals. Samples of round and flat wire and foil, in the severely cold-worked and annealed states, were checked for magnetic characteristics. The alloys exhibited widely divergent magnetic characteristics depending on the processing and heat-treating procedures used in preparing the samples. Direct-current hysteresis loops showing the different magnetic characteristics of 90 pct Co, 9.5 pct Fe, and 0.5 pct Mn alloys are shown in Figs. 1 to 8 inclusive, while Figs. 9 and 10 show the loops for an alloy of 82 pct Co, 11.75 pct Fe, 5.6 pct V, and 0.65 pct Mn. Figs. 1 and 2 show the high remanence and exceedingly square-loop characteristics of the hard-drawn wire and ribbon roll flattened therefrom. With the change in processing from roll flattening to flattening by drawing through flat diamond dies the resultant change in texture is accompanied by the drastic change in the shape of the loop as shown in Fig. 3. This skewed loop on annealing reverts to a more normal loop as shown in Fig. 8. The most unique loops are obtained with flat rolled strip. These are shown in Figs. 4 and 5. In the case of the hard-rolled material, Fig. 4, there is little change in induction until the magnetizing force reaches 50 oe. From 50 to 60 oe there is a sharp increase in induction to over 15,000 gauss, which for all practical purposes is saturation. The induction remains at a constant value while the magnetizing force decreases to 40 oe. At this point the

In ternary systems containing silicon and transition elements, silicon was found to stabilize the a phase.1 At 1000°C a broad a-phase region was found in the Cr-Mn-Si system,1 which extends very close to the Mn-Si binary line (within about 3 at. pct Cr). Later investigation showed that, if chromium was replaced by small amounts (3 to 5 at. pct) of v,1 Ti, Nb, Ta, Mo, or w,1 the a phase or the R phase was again stabilized. Whether stabilization of complex crystal structures is possible by small additions of iron, cobalt, or nickel to Mn-Si is not known. Investigation of the Co-Mn-Si system4 shows the presence of several ternary phases, but at cobalt concentrations higher than 10 at. pct. In the present work the ternary systems Fe-Mn-Si and Co-Mn-Si were investigated at low iron and cobalt concentrations (< 7 at. pct Fe or Co) in search of phases of complex crystal structure. Experimental Procedure. The alloys were pre-pared by induction melting Co (99.8 pct), Si (99.9 pct), electrolytic Fe (99.88 pct), and Mn (99.9 pct) in recrystallized alumina crucibles under an inert atmosphere of argon gas. The alloy specimens were wrapped in molybdenum foil, sealed in argon-filled (at 1/2 atm) silica capsules and annealed for 72 hr at 1000" 1°C, and water-quenched. The use of argon-filled capsules was found to reduce the losses during annealing and the molybdenum foil prevented reaction of the manganese with silica. The total weight loss due to annealing and melting was found to be less than 1 pct for each alloy. The alloys were not analyzed chemically. A part of each annealed specimen was polished and examined metal-lographically using etching solutions, a) 0.1 to 0.5 pct oxalic acid solution in water, or b) 0.5 pct HNOs in methyl alcohol. Even though the etching solutions were quite dilute, the specimens were heavily etched and stained if the etching time exceeded more than 5 sec. Etching times found suitable were usually 1 to 3 sec. For X-ray diffraction work, a part of each annealed specimen was powdered by crushing after the exposed surface was ground off. X-ray diffraction patterns were taken with powder specimens using a 20-cm-diam asymmetrical focusing camera and Fe K radiation. These powder patterns were found quite satisfactory for the purpose of phase identification. However, X-ray diffraction patterns of single-phase alloy powder specimens were also taken using a Siemens diffractometer and filtered Cr-Ka radiation for greater resolution of the diffraction lines. Results and Discussion. In the Fe-Mn-Si system a new ternary phase was found at 1000°C between the p manganese and the MnsSi phase regions. The approximate phase relationships in this region of the 1000°C isothermal section are shown in Fig. 1. The new ternary phase, designated as the K phase, was found to occupy a narrow region about 1 at. pct in width and extending from Fee.oMn74.5Silg.5 to Fe.Mn.Silg.. At the high-iron content region, the K phase was found in equilibrium with the p manganese and the MnsSi phases but, at the low-iron content end of the K-phase region, the phases in equilibrium with the K phase were the p manganese phase, the MnsSi phase, and another new phase, designated in Fig. 1 as the v phase. THE present work was done in connection with a program for investigating metal-to-ceramic braze techniques using the well-known reactivity of titanium with certain ceramic oxides. The investigation extended over the range of 0 to 30 pct Ti. The indium was obtained from the Indium Corp. of America and was specified to be 99.97 pct pure. The titanium was supplied by Metals Disintegrating Co. and was stated to be 99.5 pct pure. Each 2 to 4 g quantity of the alloy compositions studied was prepared using a mixture of 300 mesh powders pressed into pellet form. The pellets were heated in thin-walled molybdenum crucibles using a resistance-wound furnace in a vacuum less than 10-4 mm of Hg. Little reaction occurred between the molten alloy and the crucibles at the temperatures and short time intervals used. Only slight spectroscopic traces of molybdenum were found in the melt after a typical period of heating. The points shown on the phase diagram of Fig. 1 represent thermal arrest measurements. The phase boundaries shown are consistent with the thermal arrest and X-ray data obtained. The temperatures were determined using a Pt-Pt 10 pct Rh thermocouple with the junction spot-welded to a short molybdenum rod. The rod was almost completely immersed in the liquid metal, so that good thermal contact with the melt was achieved. The small mass of the crucible and its contents made it possible to obtain many heating and cooling curves in a few minutes time, an advantage which helped to minimize the effects of indium evaporation at the higher temperatures. A Brown strip chart recorder was used to display the thermal arrest curves. To check the technique, the melting point of 99.999 pure Al was measured and found to be within 1 of 660.2c, the accepted melting point. The upper limit of temperature with this technique was about 900°C beyond which the evaporation rate of indium became great enough to alter appreciably the alloy composition during the runs. A peritectic transition was found at 796°+ 5°C from 1.5 to 30 wt pct Ti. It was not found at 0.5 or 1.0 pct. A small super-cooling effect was observed. The melting-point transition to the B + L phase was found up to 20 pct Ti but not at 25 pct. Within the 1 deg accuracy of the measurement, the transition temperature was that of pure indium, 156°C. The liquidus line to the left of the 1.5 titanium point was located only approximately. The two crossed circle points at 1.0 and 0.5 pct Ti place a lower limit on the liquidus line and were determined by observing visually the cessation of vibrations in the melt caused by the damping effect as B-phase crystals were formed during cooling. The B-phase boundary was found at 23.8 pct Ti by X-ray analyses of small single crystals of the B phase isolated from 2 pct Ti melts. The compound was found to be Jetragonal with lattice dimensions of c = 3.052A and a = 10.094W. From the unit cell dimensions and the measured density of 6.42 i 0.05 g per cc, the compound was determined to be In4Ti3 which has 23.8 pct Ti. A strain anneal process has been developed for the production of iron tensile test specimens, the gauge length consisting substantially of a single crystal. Since the method has been quite successful and the results of general interest, the process will be described in detail. The essential feature of the method is the continuous, slow increase of furnace temperature during the grain growth annealing treatment. Briefly, the procedure is as follows: I. Heat machined bars to 950°C in vacuum, hold I hr, furnace cool. 2. Strain to 3.5-3.8 pct elongation (axial loading). 3. Anneal, continuously raising furnace temperature from 450 to goo°C at a rate of so0 per day. 4. Hold at 900°C for 100 hr, furnace cool. Tensile test bars with a 1/4- X I-in. gauge section have been machined from 35 in. Armco iron plate and from 3/8 in. rounds of Puron, a high purity laboratory iron. The axes of the test bars were parallel to the rolling direction. During the machining operation the bars were polished in the lathe with No. 600 emery paper, and this polished surface proved satisfactory for subsequent macrographic examination. A micrographic examination of the materials showed that both were high in FeO inclusions, those of the Puron being smaller but much more numerous. An initial vacuum anneal of I hr at 950°C followed by furnace cooling resulted in a ferritic grain size of ASTM No. 3 for Armco and No. I for Puron. Special heat treatments which reversed these initial grain sizes produced no marked improvement in single crystal production after subsequent treatments. The strain for subsequent grain growth was determined by measuring the decrease in diameter of the tensile bar during elongation. The change in diameter could be measured with a micrometer to +0.0001 in., corresponding to an accuracy of 0.08 pct for the elongation. The accuracy of the diameter measurement is also dependent on grain size because of surface roughening during elongation, and for this reason, a No. 3 grain size is preferable. Optimum grain growth was obtained for strains between 3.5 and 3.8 pct elongation. Once this critical range had been cstablished, all tests were held within it, and thus only meager data were obtained on grain growth following strains outside this range. In general, grain size decreased with increasing strain to about 5.5 pct elongation. Grain growth was occasionally ohserved with less than 3.5 pct elongation although this may have been the result of error in measurement. The program control device for the grain growth anneal consisted of a I rpm motor and worm gear drive, operating the dial shaft of a pyrometer controller through a pulley. Dial speeds of 33 and 50°C per day were tried, but the results at the slower speed were not sufficiently better to warrant the increased furnace time. The furnace tube was evacuated at intervals during the run and kept sealed the remainder of the time. When the controller reached 900°C, it was stopped and the temperature held for 100 hr. This eliminated most of the numerous minute crystallites of about 0.5 mm dimension usually visible on the etched surface of the single crystal. THIS meeting was held at the home of the Institute in the United Engineering Society Building, 29. West 39th St., New York, N. Y., Feb. 18 to 21, 1908. The first session, held in the large auditorium Tuesday evening, Feb. 18, was called to order at 8 p.m. by Prof. Henry M. Howe, Past-President of the Institute, who welcomed the members and guests in a few cordial and well-chosen remarks. The following papers, accompanied by lantern-illustrations, were presented in oral abstract by their authors Swedenborg and Humboldt, by R. W. Raymond, New York, N. Y. Electric Power in Steel Mills, by David B. Rushmore and Karl A. Pauly, Syracuse, N. Y. At the close of the session, an informal reception in the offices of the Institute was tendered to members and guests. The second session, held in Assembly Room No. 1 in the same building, Wednesday, Feb. 19, was called to order at 10 a.m. by Prof. Robert H. Richards, Past-President of the Institute. Before proceeding with the papers on iron and steel, which were scheduled for presentation at this session, Mr. F. E. Junge, a representative of the gas-engine and electric motor industry of Berlin, Germany, gave a short oral discussion of the paper by Mr. Rushmore and Mr. Pauly, Electric Power in Steel Mills. Printed copies of the paper, Uniform Nomenclature of Iron and Steel, were distributed among the members and guests present, and the request was made for a later discussion of this important subject by letter. This paper constitutes the Report of Committee No. 24, of the International Association for Testing Materials, which was presented at the Brussels Congress in 1906. Andrew Carnegie, America&apos;s best-known ironmaster and philanthropist, died at his home at Lenox, Mass., Monday, Aug. 11, after a three days&apos; illness. A pioneer in the steel industry, he introduced into this .country the Bessemer process And formed the plans that have resulted in this country&apos;s supremacy in the steel markets of the world. Known throughout the world for his, gifts, he is also known to engineers as the donor of the home of their National Societies and as the founder of the Carnegie Institute of Technology, of Pittsburgh. For many years, also, he was an honorary member of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and of the Engineers Club of New York. What he considered the secret, of his success is shown by the epitaph he wrote for himself, "Here lies a man who knew how to enlist in his service better men than himself." He was buried Thursday, Aug. 14, in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Tarry-town, N. Y., the funeral services being private, in accordance with his wish.

Radiotracers were demonstrated to be of considerable value in a study of the interaction of dithiophosphate with galena. The interaction had characteristics of both chemisorption and chemical reaction, being complex because of the nature of the galena surface. Sorption was rapid and markedly reversible, and flotation occurred at relatively small amounts of dithiophosphate sorbed.

THE Federal taxes on incomes and excess profits are of course heavy. In 1917, the value of the mineral production of the United States was a little in excess of $5,000,000,000. The total of Federal taxes for that year, for the mineral producing companies, as computed by themselves, amounts, according to tentative compilations, to about $207,000,000, and the total for the comprehensive group of mineral and metal indus-tries to about $766,000,000, which figures represent respectively 9.5 per cent. and 35.1 per cent. of the total tax paid by all corporations. Be-cause of greater complexities in applying the revenue laws to mineral properties than to most other industries, opportunity is afforded for wide differences of view. Single and mixed mineral flotation behavior and the mechanisms for the loss of selectivity in 1:1 and 95:5 apatite: dolomite mineral mixtures are presented. Loss of selectivity in mixed mineral systems is attributed to depletion of oleate ions available for adsorption by bulk precipitation with calcium and magnesium ions dissolved from dolomite. Flotation after two-stage conditioning was found to be a potential technique to separate dolomite from apatite. This method involves conditioning at pH 10 followed by reconditioning at a lower pH. The results indicate that selective flotation of dolomite, a minor mineral in south Florida phosphate deposits, could be obtained by reconditioning at pH below 4.5. Higher selectivity was observed for mixed minerals as compared to that of single minerals.

Under the designations "industrial talc" and "soapstone" are included earth materials of widely different chemical and mineral compositions. Talc, the mineral, is a hydrous magnesium silicate, with a suggested theoretical formula H2Mg3(SiO3)4 or H2O.3MgO.4SiO2, which postulates 63.5 pct SiO2, 31.7 pct MgO, and 4.8 pct H20.18 Single grains or leaves of talc, however, seem to have variations in water content that range from 3.5 pct to more than 7 pct, as well as slight differences in the proportions of MgO and Si02.20 Most of the industrial talcs produced in the United States do not approach the composition given above (see Table 1), but are essen- [ ]

The study was undertaken to investigate the effect in the charge to a blast furnace of zinc and alkali contents, which tend to form accretions and scaffolds in the upper sections of the furnace. Commercial iron oxide pellets were reduced in a CO:N2, 40:60 gas mixture in a 5-cm by 5-m counter-current reactor (Rist-type apparatus) designed to simulate blast-furnace conditions. Pellets from a commercial magnetite concentrate were prepared in the laboratory with zinc (1% ZnO) and alkali (1% KOH) additions to the concentrate. Reducibility, crushing strength and swelling tests were carried out and the results compared with test data from pellets prepared without additions. The results indicated normal behaviour for those pellets containing zinc, whereas those containing alkali swelled catastrophically under the same reducing conditions.

IN these days of special legislation for the benefit of various industries one might well consider one branch of human endeavor intimately associated with engineering-that of patents and patent litigation. It is estimated that 85 per cent of all industries in the United States are based directly or indirectly on patents. Most inventors are engineers, and most patent litigation pertains to the engineering industries. It is fitting, therefore, that engineers should be vitally interested in discussing patent affairs, particularly as inventors are not a professional group, and invention is mostly a transitory phase incident to the development of specific industrial problems.
