That calcium will activate quartz for flotation with anionic collectors such as soaps has been known for a number of years,1 2 3 and the method has been applied to the concentration of various iron ore 4 5 6 as well as to other materials. Clemmer gives the permissible pH range for the activation of quartz by calcium as between 9.5 and 12.5 with an optimum value of 11.0, and Hertzog7 has determined the calcium abstraction of iron ores and of Ottawa sand, but otherwise little quantitative data are available. The purpose of the present investigation was to determine those conditions under which dilute solutions of calcium chloride will activate quartz for anionic flotation and to determine the amount of calcium ion adsorbed by quartz. Those variables, the influence of which was primary, such as calcium, sodium, and hydrogen ion concentrations, were studied. Other factors which influenced the results are discussed in the description of the experiments. Three different experimental methods were used to determine the activation of the quartz. The first method was to treat a sample of ground, deslimed quartz with solutions of calcium chloride and sodium hydroxide, and to determine the calcium adsorbed by chemical analysis of the solution. The oxidation kinetics of UCu5 in carbon dioxide have been studied over the temperature range 350° to 850°C. At any one temperature, two successive parabolic rate constants are obtained. Up to 650°C, the temperature dependence of the reaction is snzall and the first parabolic rate constant is higher than the second. At temperatures of 690°C and above, there is a very marked temperature dependence and the second rate constant is the higher. Metallo-graphic examination has shown that attack proceeds via internal oxidation. THE oxidation behavior of the U-Cu intermetallic compound, UCu5, in carbon dioxide was briefly examined during investigations aimed at selecting oxidation-resistant uranium-alloy coatings.' It was found that an extremely thick, coherent scale was formed coated at the scale-gas interface with a thin, apparently continuous layer of copper. A more detailed investigation of the oxidation of UCus has now been made. Previous published work2 has been limited to a brief examination of UCu5 in connection with the oxidation of a U-1 wt pct Cu alloy in carbon dioxide. No attempt was made to explain its behavior, but the work indicated that attack proceeded by intern oxidation, with the formation of a layer of copper on the surface of the specimen. The mill is a departure from gravity concentration and has gained a reputation for the low initial cost of erection, extreme simplicity and the low cost of milling on the refractory character of the ore which is treated. The structure is of heavy timbers with board walls and corrugated roofing. The floors are concrete and the general layout is of the ground floor only. All the machines are driven by individual motors and the transmission usually found in such a plant is entirely absent. (Fig. 2.) ORE The ore from the Galena mine is sheared Wallace quartzite replaced with quartz, siderite, pyrite, sphalerite, gray copper (tetrahedrite) and very fine-grained argentiferous galena. Much of the silver is undoubtedly associated with the gray copper, the amount, however, apparently varies with different localities in the vein. An average assay of the ore is 6.0 per cent. lead, 1.3 per cent. zinc, 0.3 per cent. copper, 17.5 per cent. iron and 4.5 oz. silver. The concentrates produced are of an average 53 per cent. lead, 40 oz. silver, 8 per cent. zinc and 11 per cent. iron, while the tailings are 0.5 per cent. lead, 0.4 oz. silver. With the present market for zinc no attempt is made to produce a zinc concentrate.

BERYLLIUM, magnesium, zinc and cadmium, together with mercury, constitute a coherent sub-group of the periodic system and these metals, excepting mercury; have been studied in sufficient detail by the new X-ray diffraction methods to prove their common adherence to the hexagonal close-packed type of crystal structure with a progressive increase in axial ratio as we pass through the group from beryllium to cadmium. The first four columns of Table 1 summarize the data on crystal structure of these metals reported in the International Critical Tables.1 The last two columns are based on results obtained in the present investigation. Extrapolation is a useful technique, but it can be overdone. Seldom is it justified to study over a range of 1 to 6 and extrapolate the results to 150,000. It is especially dangerous if the extrapolation is based on a false assumption. The authors assume settlers scale-up by residence time rather than by area, admit their result (a settler depth of 7 m) is "unreasonable" and suggest longer, wider, shallower settlers might be better. Various authors have noted for a copper-LIX system a total flow basis of 2 gpm per sq ft for sizing settlers. The results of this are compared with those in the paper in [Table 7]. The authors note that flooding of their settlers was never approached. Thus the smallest unit calculated is understandably twice too big. The largest however, is 5% of the required size. I note that the figures in [Table 6] for 1/min/cm2 are based on plan area rather than cross section as titled and are wrong by l0 4. A flow of 2050 1/min/cm2 is about Mach I. It is also 10 5/3 or 46.5 times that of the little one, although the abstract says the design was based on constant flow rate per unit cross section.

Evidence is produced below to show that the carbide "Mn,C," reported by Kw,and ersson' is really a mixture of two carbides. One is an Fe-Mn carbide which is probably isomorphous with hexagonal Mn15C4, reported by Bouchand and Pruchart.' The othev is a tetragonul Fe-Mn carbide with cell dzmensions close to those reported previously by the author3 for an Fe0.1Mno. carbide. IN a recent investigation several Fe-Mn carbide specimens, each weighing about 5 g, were prepared in a manner previously reported.3 Debye-Scherrer X-ray photographs were taken of at least two samples from different parts of each specimen using a 114.6-mm-diam camera. The exposure time was 2 hr using filtered chromium radiation, a tube voltage of 35 kv and a tube current of 10 ma. In the case of one specimen, which contained nominal weight percentages of iron, manganese, and carbon of 9.40, 84. 6,, and 6.0, respectively, duplicate chemical analyses indicated f1.2 and 5.5 wt pct C to be present in the two samples taken of the specimen: no graphitic carbon was detected. One powder-diffraction pattern of this specimen indicated the presence of the tetragons: carbide reported earlier,3 (a = 6.772A, c = 9.427A), plus cementite (O), plus an unknown structure. A great deal is known, in a qualitative sense, about the performance of CMI EB-36 centrifuges. The manufacturer can give reliable guidance for the proper operation of its centrifuges and can give general estimates of expected product moisture and recovery. Quantitative estimates of the effects of changes in the various operating parameters are more difficult to find. The engineer faced with designing a preparation plant may be without the specific data needed to make decisions. For example, to obtain optimum product moisture when drying 9.5 mm X 595 µm (0.4 in. x 28 mesh) coal the centrifuge manufacturer recommends having no more than 5% -595 µm (-28 mesh) material in the centrifuge feed. They know that more -595 µm (-28 mesh)material in the feed will cause higher product moistures, but they usually cannot quantify the increased moisture or describe the shape of the product moisture versus -595 µm (-28 mesh) in the feed curve. This study was conceived to provide quantitative information on the EB-36 centrifuges, focusing on product moisture, recovery, and size degradation. All of the centrifuges tested were Model EB-36 dryers from Centrifugal and Mechanical Industries Inc. (CMI), with feeds in the nominal 9.5 mm x 595 pm (0.4 in. x 28 mesh) range. These are typical centrifugal dryers in this application, and many were available for testing.

Since the comprehensive review of the Persian fields presented by Sir John Cadman last year, operations have proceeded normally. No developments of especial importance fall to be recorded and it remains only to bring up to date the full information given at the beginning of 1933. Controlled production from the Masjid-i-Sulaiman and Haft Kel fields has been maintained at slightly higher rates than during 1932. The figures for the past five years are as follows: These represent crude oil and products piped to the coast but exclude products reinjected into the reservoir, a process that has been in continuous operation at Masjid-i-Sulaiman during the period under review. The systematic delimitation of the Haft Kel field has been continued during the past year and results have been sufficiently encouraging to justify the inception of a wider scheme for distribution of production. Drilling has been resumed recently in the Persian sector of the Naft Khaneh field, and preliminary survey work is in progress for the selection of a site for a refinery at Kermanshah arid the construction of a connecting pipe line. Investigations in connection with the scientific control of reservoir were dealt with in considerable detail in last year's review. This work has been steadily pursued during 1933 and certain of the investigations have been the subject of papers presented to the World Petroleum Congress held in London in July of last year.

THE publication of the report by Mr. F. L. Ransome was welcomed by many engineers who had mined in the heart of the Sail Juan country, braved its long and snowy winters, climbed its lofty peaks, run the gauntlet of its snow-slides, and studied its problems of geology, while making dividends for their English or American clients. This report helps one to understand why the bonanzas occurred, and why the inevitable borrasca presents itself where least expected. The Red Mountain district of Ouray county, a very productive section from 1884 to 1893, occupies considerable space in the report mentioned.. The character of the ore-occurrence, being distinctive and presenting many features not existing elsewhere, has been deserving of special study. It is to be regretted that Mr. Ransome was .unable to observe the conditions underground, as all the principal properties, many of which I opened and developed, were closed at the time of his investigation: It has been my privilege to have contributed a few brief papers recording my observations in developing these properties ; and it is the object of the present paper to present certain sections of the Yankee Girl mine, which throw additional light on the geology of the section and make the available data more complete. The main Yankee Girl chimney or " stock" was the most productive for the first 500 ft. in depth of any chimney in the district.

The Bureau of Mines investigated selective extraction of Au and Ag from a low-grade Au ore containing Hg. Gold and silver were extracted from the ore in cyanide slurries, and Hg extraction was suppressed with sodium or calcium sulfide. Maximum Au extraction and minimum Hg extraction were obtained using solutions containing 17 kg NaCN/t of solution (0.34 lb NaCN/st). Increasing the cyanide concentration increased Hg extraction without increasing Au extraction. Mercury extraction from the ore was suppressed with 0.5-2.9 kg CaS/kg Hg (0.5-2.9 lb/lb) in the ore. Gold-to-mercury ratios of 100:1 to 400:1 were obtained in the leach solution, and on the activated carbon in a CIP circuit.

Anew flotation process to recover alunite from low-grade alunite ores is described. The process begins with run-of-mine ore, reduced to less than 5 mm (0.2 in.), being preconditioned with the reagents before grinding and alunite flotation. From the preconditioning step, ore particles, impregnated with reagents, form pellets that subsequently disintegrate into the pulp during grinding. The second step is basically a standard alunite flotation step. Pilot plant test results show that an alunite concentrate assaying at least 85% alunite and less than 5% silica can be produced. Laboratory and pilot plant results were in excellent agreement, indicating that the new process is a viable means of alunite beneficiation. Plant results, using the new process, were superior to results from conventional alunite flotation procedure.

Samples of coal from an adit in the Fording River District of British Columbia showed hydrophilic properties between depths of 0-24.5 m (0-80 ft) and was naturally hydrophobic at greater depths. Laboratory experiments indicated that weathered samples (i.e., those mined at 0-24.5 m) could be upgraded by froth flotation at pH32 following slimes removal. The i.e.p. of samples varied regularly between pH = 1.6-4.1, the weathered fractions being at the lower end of the pH scale. These values followed a pattern comparable with the flotation behavior of samples. A patchwise structure for coal surfaces determining the resultant disjoining pressure which in turn determines flotation-non-flotation relationships is postulated.

A plan is prepared to develop and operate a four mine complex over a 30-year period. The mining complex is in the vicinity of two existing processing plants and the most economical means of transporting the raw minerals to either or both of these processing plants is sought. The mines and processing plants are all within a radius of 5.6 km (3.5 miles). Existing transportation facilities consist of county and state roads and federal highways as well as haul roads in some areas. A navigable river meanders through the area under study and there are two railroad systems servicing the area. The analysis shows the economic and operational feasibility of using an overland conveyor in lieu of other means of transportation.

THE data relative to the effect of metal depth on slag volume was obtained from the operation on two acid electric furnaces in which heats of various sizes were produced. The furnaces used were of 3 and 5-ton rated capacity; the heats investigated ranged from 6 to 8 tons. Heats of 7 and 8 tons were made in the larger furnace; heats of 6 tons in the smaller one. Bath depths and diameters were measured on the furnaces when cold and each is accurate to one inch. Both the metal charge and the slag were weighed on a track scale accurate to ± 25 lb. All other components added to the furnace were weighed on a wheelbarrow scale accurate to ±5 lb.
