"A 2003 paper discussed the idea that as gold mining companies grow larger it becomes more difficult for them to discover or acquire new gold deposits large enough to replace extracted reserves on an annual basis. Deposits of the size required to replace annual production of very large gold producers (VLGPs) are statistically few. An update in 2005 reviewed VLGPs with respect to production, reserves, and reserve life and observed recent changes in the gold mining industry. Now, more than 12 years later, this paper explores how those VLGPs have fared and how the gold mining industry has changed. On discute les performances techniques et économiques des méthodes d'exploitation à haut rendement dans les mines métallifères au Canada. L'accent est mis sur la dilution et pertes des réserves minières et sur les coûts opératoires et totaux. Une analyse technique de quelques opérations minières est également effectuée. Il ressort de cette analyse que les résultats réels des opérations minières en cours diffèrent souvent de ces planifiés suite à la dilution du minerai et aux pertes importantes des réserves minières. On propose, définit et discute un certain nombre des facteurs de performances technologiques et économiques pour pouvoir mieux apprécier les problèmes rencontrés dans plusieurs mines en opération. À l'aide des études de cas on démontre impact négatif de la dilution et des pertes additionnelles des réserves minières sur la rentabilité des opérations en cours et sur les nouveaux projets miniers. On conclut, que l'application des indicateurs proposés donnerait un outil valable, aux opérateurs miniers, aux niveaux de la planification, du suivi des travaux d'exploitation et d'éventuelles études comparatives entre les différentes situations minières. ABSTRACT The paper discusses technical and cost performance of bulk mining methods in Canadian U/G metal mines. It focuses on ore dilution, ore reserves losses as well as on operational and total cost. Technical analysis of some mining operations has been performed. It indicates that due to dilution and significant reserves losses, the actual results of mining operations often differ substantially from those planned. The paper proposes, defines and discusses several indicators quantifying technical and economical performance in order to assess better the problems encountered in several operating mines. The case studies presented here have demonstrated an adverse effect of dilution and additional reserves losses onto profitability of existing operations and new mining projects. It is concluded that the application of the above mentioned indicators may be beneficial for mine operators. They may become a very useful tool at the stages of planning, follow-up of mining works and with regards to comparative studies between different mining situations.

During the past 10 years, research work to improve the survey of stope limits after mining supplied useful information, particularly for large open and sub-level stopes, regarding waste dilution caused by differences between final production limits and planned stope limits. However, the efficiency of this information to improve the overall efficiency of the mining process is limited, given that the impacts of inaccurate ore limits leading to dilution (sensu stricto) and ore losses haw not been considered adequately. Geological/sampling information should be optimized in terms of quantity and/or quality for the deposit characteristics and the constraints of the mining method used. As industry practice regarding the definition and recording of dilution is flexible and as ore losses frequently am poorly doc-umented, the use of these terms is reviewed. Simulations were carried out on two typical narrow gold deposits, based on an earlier study at Inco's Thompson mine regarding the impacts of wide to narrow delineation grids using recorded variations of vein geometry. Vertical to sub-vertical deposits of 3 m and 6 m widths mined by long-hole open stopes were considered. Deposits delineated by 7.5 m (25 ft) grids were taken as a base case and the impacts of less accurate limits in conjunction with long hole mining based only on a 15 m (50 ft) delin¬eation grid. The impacts of overestimation (dilution) and underestimation (metal losses) were considered separately, using the average error of +/-0.62 m recorded in the Inco study. The impact of less accurate information was much stronger on the narrower deposit: both dilution and ore losses diminished the net present value of the 3 m wide deposit by 39.27% and 45.41%, respectively, and that of the 6 m wide deposit by 12.84% and 11.55%. As the impacts of ore loss and those of dilution on the net present value am almost identical in these simulations, we could, in practice, assume a 50/50 split between dilution and ore losses in such a case. These results do no take into account the effects of local optimization measures taken at the mine production level (blasthole sampling near stope limits, etc.) The potential impacts of geological and sampling uncertainties in terms of lower NPV justify and require more systematic efforts to ensure that deposit appraisal work and feasibility studies are adequate to optimize company revenue and competitive returns to investors from mine production activities.

Metallurgists can well afford to direct their close attention to the metallurgy involved in this important operation. To one who has seen today's high production rolling mills for aluminum it is difficult to realize that the first aluminum rolling mill For sheet was installed a scant 55 yr ago, in 1892. This mill was a three-stand train of 2-high mills, driven by a steam engine and was operated for many years successfully rolling aluminum sheet. Mills for the rolling of aluminum rod were installed in 1899 to meet the demand For manufacture of electrical conductor wires and cables. Bars and rods in straight lengths were also made. While these mills were the first built for rolling aluminum products of these types some rod had previously been rolled on brass and copper mills. Not until many years later, in 1929, however, Were facilities provided for the rolling of structural shapes, such as I-beams and channels. Crystalline igneous rocks, known commercially as granite, are exploited in Quebec f rom more than twenty-five quarries for building, ornamental and monumental purpose$. Quebec is the main Canadian producer of construction granite, accounting for nearly 90 per cent of total production. Jn the last three years, this industry has experienced an important growth due to improved marketing and use of modern equipment in rock-cutting and polishing. Jn /983 a 35 per cent sales increase is forecast. The main rock varieties extracted are the following: porphyritic pinkish grey granite and green charnockite from Riviere-dPierre, mahogany brown granite and black anorthositic rock f rom the Lac Saint-Jean area, fine-grained pink granite from Guenette, coarse-grained brown quartz monzonitefrom SaintA lexis-des-Monts. All these rock types occur in the Grenville tectonic province whereas a medium-grained, light grey granite, Devonian in age, is extensively being quarried in the southern part of the Appalachians. In the Superior province a greenish black diabase and a deep red granite are extracted. Search for new varieties and deposits is actively being carried out by prospectors and by the minis/ere de /'Energie et des Ressources du Quebec following growing demand for granitic and gabbroic rocks as dimension stone.

RÉSUMÉ Cet article traite d’une analyse technique et économique du concept du triage optique en vue d’améliorer la rentabilité des opérations minières. Le principe du tri optique et les principaux systèmes et modules servant au fonctionnement de l’appareil de triage sont décrits. un modèle a été développé pour analyser l’intérêt économique d’une opération de triage optique. L’étude est basée sur des données provenant d’une halde de minerai à faible teneur en or, déposé à la surface, et de minerai extrait des opérations souterraines courantes de la mine Beaufor au Québec. Les résultats de cette analyse indiquent que l’opération de triage optique permet d’améliorer grandement la performance économique; l’opération devient alors rentable pour des teneurs en or relativement petites.

La pyrométallurgie du cuivre est essentiellement une chaîne de trois étapes successives d’oxydation préférentielle du fer et du soufre et des impuretés moins nobles que le cuivre qui sont contenues dans le concentré de cuivre issu de l’usine de concentration du minerai, aussi appelée concentrateur. La Figure 1 illustre la chaîne complète d’élaboration du cuivre depuis la mine jusqu’au cuivre pur. La voie hydrométallurgique traite le concentré par lixiviation, c.à.d. par dissolution en phase aqueuse à température typiquement inférieure à 100 ou 150⁰C, alors que la voie pyrométallurgique traite le concentré par fusion à température de l’ordre de 1200 à 1300⁰C.

ABSTRACT The options for reducing the carbon footprint of energy use in mining fall into three categories of activity: i) reducing demand, ii) improving energy utilization, and iii) adopting low carbon energy technologies. In addition to the environmental imperative, the economic case for these activities gains higher priority as the prices of electricity, gas, and liquid fuels increase. Low-carbon, energy-saving technology options that are available to mining industry companies lead to projects with return rates that must compete alongside other capital-intensive projects considered by mining company boards. Energy projects frequently involve longer payback periods and lower rates of return than those of competing bids for capital, such as new mineral property developments. For energy services companies that specialize in the financing, construction, efficient operation, and maintenance of energy projects, the same returns and payback periods can be considered acceptable or even attractive.

Because segments of the Canadian mineral-based economy are dependent totally or in part on foreign sources of certain minerals, their well-being may well be affected by inability to obtain these minerals. Where such dependency exists, it is therefore important that contingency plans be available to counteract possible price increases or lack of supplies by means of technology, developed well in advance of any pending crisis . Canada is vulnerable to possible future real or artificial shortages of certain foreign-produced mineral commodities, and science and technology can provide information for the development of policies for counteracting efforts by foreign exporters to control prices or limit supplies.

For mining companies facing strong international competition and unfavorable commodities? prices, automation of underground operations has got a potential to increase productivity and help cut cost. However, despite considerable technological progress in this field, there still remain some problems to overcome. Furthermore, a success implementation of automation depends also on numerous operational, organizational and even human factors. In this context, this paper reviews briefly a technological progress with regard to different underground operations. Following that, several issues related to implementation of automated equipment and systems are presented and discussed. Particular emphasis is put on the factors whose importance is sometimes underestimated. Some recommendations in this respect are also given. It is stated that a success of an automation project is a function of many ?winning conditions?, which may be created through a very thorough planning and preparation. It is also underlined that despite achievements made, a vision of a man-less underground mine is not yet a question of near future as it may seem.

"RÉSUMÉ La lixiviation acide d’un minerai oxydé cupro-cobaltifère en milieu non réducteur et en milieu réducteur en utilisant le Fe2+ et le métabisulfite de sodium (SMBS) a été étudiée et les résultats ont été comparés. Les tests de lixiviation ont été effectués à température ambiante, dans une pulpe à 30 % solide, avec une vitesse d’agitation de 600 tr/min, un potentiel redox de 350 mV pour les tests en milieu réducteur, et un pH de 1,8. Les tests de lixiviation avec usage du SMBS comme réducteur ont donné la meilleure cinétique de lixiviation du cuivre. Pour le cobalt, c’est l’usage du Fe2+ qui a donné la meilleure cinétique de lixiviation. L’augmentation de la dose du fer dans la solution au-delà de 5 g/L a influencé négativement les rendements de lixiviation du cuivre et du cobalt. ABSTRACT Acid leaching of a copper-cobaltiferous oxide ore in a non-reducing environment and in a reducing environment using Fe2+ and sodium metabisulfite (SMBS) was studied and the results compa¬red. The leaching tests were performed at room temperature, in a 30% solids pulp, with a shaking speed of 600 rpm, a redox potential of 350 mV for the tests performed in the reducing environment, and a pH of 1.8. The leaching tests using the SMBS as a reducing agent produced the best copper leaching kinetics. As for cobalt, the best leaching kinetics was achieved using Fe2+. An increase in the amount of iron in the solution above 5 g/L negatively influenced copper and cobalt leaching yields. INTRODUCTION La République Démocratique du Congo (RDC) est un pays reconnu dans le monde pour son sous-sol qui regorge d’énormes quantités de cuivre et de cobalt (USGS, 2014; Palisade Research, 2016). La technique qui semble être la plus recommandée pour extraire à la fois le cuivre et le cobalt des minerais oxydés cupro-cobaltifères est la lixivia-tion acide en milieu réducteur. Cette technique est appliquée par la majorité des sociétés minières qui exploitent ces minerais dans l’ex-province du Katanga en RDC, à savoir: Tenke Fungurume Mining, Mutanda Mining, Kamoto Cop¬per Company, Sicomines, Gécamines, Boss Mining, Chemaf, Ruashi Mining et Somika. L’usage d’un agent réducteur est indispensable pour l’obtention d’un bon rendement de lixiviation du cobalt. En effet, plusieurs chercheurs s’accordent sur le fait que le cobalt trivalent de l’hétérogénite (CoO·2Co2O3·6H2O) est insoluble à l’action de l’acide seul; il ne devient soluble qu’après réduction en cobalt bivalent (Mwema, Mpoyo, & Kafumbila, 2002; Mulaba-Bafubiandi, Ndalamo, & Mamba, 2007; Ferron, 2008; Seo, Choi, Kim, & Tran, 2013; Stuurnam, Ndlovu, & Sibanda, 2014)."

INTRODUCTION During the nineteenth century, the federal mining law was enacted with the objective of promoting the development of the western United States by providing unrestricted access to vast areas of federal land for mineral exploration. Prior to the advent of comprehensive federal, state and local land use plans, there was little, if any, regulation or restriction of mineral exploration activities. Today, the laissez-faire policies of the past that encouraged mineral exploration have gradually given way to the public's legitimate concerns regarding environmental protection, multiple use and planned land development. As a result, the contemporary prospector confronts a maze of statutes, ordinances and regulations with which he must comply to obtain the requisite approvals and permits before commencing mineral exploration on federal, state or private lands. This presentation will provide a broad overview of the exploration permitting process. The first section of this paper recommends certain general management practices to follow when attempting to obtain exploration permits. The second section presents two hypothetical cases, one involving a drilling program on private property in California and the other involving a drilling program and the removal of a bulk sample for metallurgical tests from federal land in Nevada. The cases are used to discuss jurisdictional issues and application of certain federal, state and county laws and regulations that pertain to mineral exploration. The final section contains a brief analysis of three important recent United States Supreme Court decisions. These decisions address the scope of the federal pre-emption doctrine as it applies to activities conducted on unpatented mining claims and the constitutional limits of permissible state and local land use and zoning regulations. PERMITTING PRACTICES The environmental impacts associated with mineral exploration generally result from the construction of drill sites, roads or trenches. Consequently, after the regulatory authority has considered the issues of permissible land use, the primary emphasis of the permitting process is to address problems related to pre-construction site identification and clearance, and post-construction site reclamation. Froth flotation is one of the most widely used and effective processes for mineral beneficiation. First introduced in 1911, flotation technology has seen many developments over the past 80+ years. Innovations in reagent chemistry, equipment design, process analysis and process control have given design and plant engineers a powerful set of "tools" for process optimization. However, it does not follow that all flotation systems are optimized. As Klimpel observes: "The problem with the industrial flotation process is that it is relatively easy to get reasonable results, and relatively difficult to get excellent results" Klimpel (I 988). While reasonable was sufficient in the past, competitive forces will make excellent necessary in the future. Judging by the activities in many Canadian plants this transition is already underway. This paper examines the role of some of the optimization "tools" in effecting this change.

Underground infrastructure is often a critical component of transportation and utility schemes. It is characterised by long design lives with limited access for inspection and maintenance. The exposure environment can be difficult to assess since it will often vary substantially between different locations in the same facility and with time during construction and in service. In addition, the specific demands placed upon underground infrastructure are not well covered by the exposure classes and other guidance given within current codes of practice. When problems occur they can be difficult to rectify and involve significant disruption.Given these substantial risks the prudent designer may adopt a systematic ‘durability planning’ approach which:· defines the environment and principal deterioration mechanisms for the various elements and construction materials,· predicts the design life for alternative durability enhancement options, and· recommends associated measures to be adopted during construction and in service.This paper describes the development of durability planning within Halcrow, giving examples of its use from its first implementation on tunnels under the Suez Canal in 1993 to recent projects in the Middle East and Australia. It seeks to demystify the process, identify shortcomings and speculate on its future development within the civil and mining sectors.

L'exploration géologique pour les EOP (EOP: platine, palladium, iridium, osmium, ruthénium, rhodium) requiert avant tout des méthodes appropriees à la mesure de ces élémenIs. L'approche analytique choisie doit tenir compte de plusieurs facteurs, les plus importants étant: le type de materiel analysé, sa representativite, la sensibitite de la methode et les cotits reliés à son utilisation. Dans cette optique, plusieurs démarches ana/ytiquessont possibles, toutes requérant une étape de préconcentration. L 'une des plus adéquate consiste à effectuer une préconcentration par fusion plombeuse suivie d'une analyse par émission au plasma, cette procédure permettant de mesurer Ie platine, la palladium et Ie rhodium à des couts compétitifs (15 $/échantillon). Advenant 10 presence de teneurs appréciables de l'un ou plusieurs de ces éléments, une préconcentration par fusion au sulfure de nickel suivie d 'une analyse par activation neutronique assure alors la mesure de tous les EGP ainsi que celie de l’or (90 $/échantillon). Il est important de noter que Ie nickel, ades teneurs superieures à 4%, interfère au cours de l'étape de préconcentration par fusion plombeuse, ce qui se traduit pas sous-dosage des concentrations en platine, effectivement presentes dans l'échantillon. Ainsi, les géologues à la recherche d'EPG dans des environnements géologiques riches en nickel devraient s'assurer que l'analyse utilise, au cours de l'étape de préconcentration, une fusion au sulfure de nickel.

Barrick Goldstrike Mines, Inc. Betze-Post open pit operations, located in northeastern Nevada, have experienced slope instability attributed to the presence of generally weak rock mass conditions, local adverse structural geology and perched groundwater. Ground movements are monitored with acombination of optical survey, extensometers, inclinometers, and time domain reflectometry (TDR).The slope monitoring system at Goldstrike includes two robotics theodolites, which provide real-time coverage for all highwall areas. Survey instruments are housed in specially designed climate controlled shelters in locations where all slopes can be observed. A “remote” computer housed with each theodolite collects data. The “base” computer, located in the mine offices, is used to access data from the remote computers via radio modem.

The state of the lithium mineral industry is closely linked to the performance of the glass and ceramic industries and to the overall economy. Demand for the glass/ceramic products in Europe, Asia and North America remained strong during 1999. This was due to a slight improvement in the economy during the latter half of the year. Consequently, demand for lithium minerals was firm, with a positive outlook. The major economic minerals for lithium are spodumene, petalite and lepidolite. The latter was once the primary mineral. But its importance hasdeclined since the 1960s. The lithium industry consists of two different segments: •The lithium minerals segment mines from hard-rock deposits and physically processes the material to high-grade concentrates. •The lithium chemicals and metal industry segment. The major feedstock for specialty lithium chemicals was previously high-grade spodumene ore converted to lithium carbonate. However, most lithium carbonate is now sourced from salars in North and South America.

"Les mineralisation d'or des gîtes de la SOQUEM - Silver Stack dans is canton Bousquet se situent dans une bands de roches pyroclastiques asides du groupe de Blake River, d'âge archéen, dans le même horizon géologique que lee gites aurifères de Thompson Bousquet et Dumagarni situés plus a rest. La propriété a été explores anterieurement a maintes reprises depuis les années 1930, parfois jusqu'aux travaux souterrains, notamment par les groupes Mooshla, Warrenmac et Westwood Cadillac ainsi que par Silver Stack Mines.Ces zones auriferes se situent a l'intérieur de larges halos (jusqu'à 1,000 m x 400 in) de pyrite disséminée (2-5%) dans des tufs a lapilli et des agglomerate acides montrant des concentrations locales de pyrite. La zone 1, découverte en vérifiant par sondage une anomalie E.M., coincide avec une de ces concentrations de pyrite et la teneur en or est ici proportionnelle a la pyrite. Ce secteur se distingue par l'intensité de l'altération en séricite. La zone 2, qui s'étend sur près de 600 m, se situe dans un agglomérat acids, avec une faible teneur en pyrite, et montre de fines veinules de quartz-carbonate.Du point de vue géophysique, aucune methods ne donne des résultats probants: la polarisation provoquée montre de tree grandee anomalies correspondant aux halos de pyrite, tandis que lee concentrations de pyrite détectées par les méthodes E.M. (VLF ou EMH) sont loin d'être toutes aurifères. Les relevés magnétiques aident a établir la structure la où un certain contraste de susceptibilité magnétique est present. Les essais minéralurgiques préliminaires indiquent que la concentration de Bette mineralisation aurifère ne présentera pas de problems majeur."

La pratique courante consiste à tenter d'obtenir un produit de broyage d'une granulométrie constante. Malheureusement, les propriétés texturales des minéraux utiles varient naturellement dans un gisement et une telle stratégie n'entraine pas toujours pour ces minéraux un degré de libération constant. Pour un rendement optimal du procédé de concentration, cette variable très importante doit donc être périodiquement vérifiée.Jusqu'à maintenant, la plupart des études de libération des minerais se font en examinant des sections polies de particules du minerai broyé. Le GRAAIM a récemment assemblé un système modulaire d'analyse d'images qui servira en grande partie à des mesures automatiques du degré de libération des minéraux. Le système s'avère relativement peu coûteux comparativement à la plupart des analyseurs de texture conventionnels si l'on considère que plusieurs de ses composantes, par exemple le miniordinateur, sont utilisées à une foule d'autres applications, et il permet de plus une grande souplesse d'utilisation puisque l'on a qu'à construire des algorithmes de mesure et de calcul en fonction de l'objectif recherché. Des programmes particuliers permettant des études automatiques de libération sur des sections polies de particules ont ainsi été élaborés. Ils permettent également des mesures de teneurs et de distributions granulométriques apparentes des particules. Des résultats obtenus dans le cas de minerais de fer sont brièvement présentés afin d'illustrer la technique."
