The mining industry has been Australia?s major economic driver over the past decade, contributing 8% to Australia?s Gross Domestic Product and 26% of Australian Stock Exchange Market capitalisation. Australia is the world's leading exporter in coal, iron ore, alumina, lead and zinc; and second largest in gold and uranium. While driving the economy, this resource boom has also created a demand for professional and operating talent that has far outstripped the capacity of Australia?s 21 million residents. I moved to Australia some 10 years ago and have not looked back. This unique island continent with its mix of Indigenous and diverse immigrants ? many still proud of their convict ancestry ? has offered life long memories both professionally and personally.

Recent accidents in the United States underground Coal Mines and the on-going carnage in Underground Chinese Coal Mines has shown the danger associated with the lack of communication infrastructures in an underground environment. The US Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) have introduced legislation that states all Underground Coal Mines must have two-way voice and personnel tracking capabilities by 2009. If Coal Mining companies are being forced to deal with this problem Tunneling Companies will not be far behind. This paper will examine current practices and best case technology to deal with these issues.

The field demonstration portion of the course was conducted June 10 at wlh Construction Co.?s yard in Denver, CO. The full-scale field demonstration presents many types of drilling and grouting equipment in operation as well as numerous grouting methods performed under various field conditions.

Introduction It is estimated that nearly 40% of all the gold ever mined in free world countries has been produced by South African operations. There is concern that this immense productive capacity will soon decline. Such a decline could reduce world gold supply and lessen the ability of market economy countries (MEC) to exert the major influence upon the world gold market. This paper addresses three general issues concerning South African gold production: • How much gold remains to be recovered from the demonstrated resources of the 44 evaluated South African mines; • How long can production at current levels continue; and • What will be its cost. Table 1 provides production data on the world's 10 largest producers for the years 1971, 1981, and 1983. As shown, South African gold production declined significantly from 1971 through 1981. As of 1981, annual South African gold production had dropped by more than 311 t (10 million oz) in 10 years. Despite this, its mines still produced 656 t (21 million oz) that year, about half the world total. From 1981 through 1983, this trend was reversed. Annual South African gold production increased by more than 21.8 t (700,000 oz). The trend reversal was also evident in the US, Canada, and Australia. This illustrates the general, inverse relationship between gold price and gold production. In South Africa especially, as gold prices increased substantially during the 1970s, the average grade of ore mined (pay limit) was lowered as new, lower grade areas and materials were exploited. Gold production declined in volume. But gold revenues increased, and the lives of the operations were extended. The 1981-83 period was one of declining (US dollar-based, average annual) gold prices that resulted in increasing South African production as average ore grades were raised. South Africa currently accounts for 50% of world production (Fig. 1). Figure 2 illustrates South Africa's contribution to total MEC production in 1971 and 1983. Although South Africa's relative share of production has declined, it still represents the single most important source of new gold supply. In 1983, it supplied more than 65% of total MEC production. South Africa currently produces more than twice as much gold as the Soviet Union (ranked second in world production), and 11 times more gold than the US (ranked fourth in world production). The roles of pulsating mechanisms such as the amplitude and frequency of the jig cycle are well established in jigging. Also well established are the roles of the size ratio and the volume fraction of the feed. In iron ore beneficiation plants, these process parameters are optimized to achieve the highest efficiency. However, the role of one of the more important feed characteristics, the liberation characteristic of the feed, has not been studied in detail. Evaluation of the liberation characteristics is difficult because the required washability test is not viable for iron ore feed. In this paper, a new method is proposed in which the liberation characteristics are measured through a separation efficiency value. In the new evaluation method, jigging parameters such as amplitude and frequency of the jig cycle are optimized from the fundamental understanding of the process dynamics and feed characteristics such as size distribution. Then, feeds with different liberation characteristics are tested to evaluate the liberation characteristics of feed in jigging.

Alkaline rock-related precious metal deposits include: • orthomagmatic platinum group elements (PGE) ± gold (Au); • porphyry copper-silver-gold (Cu-Ag-Au, ±PGE); • epithermal Au-only, and Au-Ag-base metals; • submarine exhalative Kuroko-, Cyprus-, seamount- and Yellowjacket-type deposits; and • enigmatic deposits akin to Olympic Dam. Coeval epithermal deposits related to porphyry deposits suggest the two types represent separate immiscible fluids evolved in oxidized, CO2-rich alkaline magma chambers. Alkaline rock provinces develop above mantle hot-spots, but crustal structures control the final distribution of magmas and ore fluids. Prospecting guides for alkaline rock-related precious metal deposits include the presence of evolved alkaline rocks, pervasive K-metasomatic, redox and carbonatic alteration and low level Au (±Te, etc.) anomalies. Although alkaline igneous rocks crop out in less than 1 % of the area of the North American Cordillera and craton, alkaline rock-related ore deposits have produced nearly 13% of the total United States and Canadian lode gold production. Large (31-t or 1 million-oz) deposits are common (Fig. 1), and additional deposits and reserves are being discovered. New genetic models are evolving, making alkaline rock-related precious metal prospects attractive exploration targets.

Finally, since some people may not be sure what the Metal Mining Agency is or what this Agency, I would like to briefly introduce the Metal Mining Agency of Japan.

Since 1993 Cyprus Amax has brought $2.5 billion dollars of greenfield and expansion projects into production, taking it from a mid-sized domestic minerals company into a major international minerals organization. The near simultaneous development of these multiple mineral projects in different locations around the world provided the opportunity for Cyprus Amax to develop a formal project management approach based, in large part, on an outsourcing philosophy. This formal project management system along with its outsourcing philosophy has served the growth agenda of Cyprus Amax extremely well. These preceding factors, coupled with the in-house retention of a core project group that fully understands the breadth of skills and abilities needed to undertake development of multiple large projects successfully, have been the cornerstone of Cyprus Amax’s project development success.

INTRODUCTION Construction of the 3,600,000 kilowatt Third Powerplant at Grand Coulee Dam started in late summer 1967 approximately one year after authorization by Congress. The project was made possible by a treaty with Canada providing for cooperative development of the Columbia River which was signed in 1961 and ratified in 1964. Description of the Work The existing Grand Coulee power complex consisted of a dam and two powerplants with a switchyard serving each plant, one on each bank of the river. See Fig. 1. The switching facilities were connected to transformers at the powerplants by overhead 230-kilovolt and 115-kilovolt tie circuit conductors. [ ]

Many mining companies apply ergonomic principles, but it is done either informally and/or reactively. Examples of an informal approach include replacing worn equipment, such as seats, with models that have ergonomic features, or modifying tasks to eliminate safety hazards that will also reduce risk factor exposures that may result in musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). A reactive approach is followed when modifying a task/equipment after an MSD occurs. Neither one of these approaches involves a systematic method of proactively applying ergonomic principles to actually prevent injuries or illnesses. This paper will discuss how Vulcan Materials Company applied ergonomic principles and the interventions implemented to reduce risk factor exposures.

The Functional Performance Equation for ball milling circuits allows us to isolate the circuit classification system efficiency (CSE) from the mill?s grinding performance. The factors which affect circuit CSE are reviewed, with emphasis on water usage at the classifiers. It is shown that manipulation of such water usage can be carried out to improve plant grinding circuit efficiency, at times by more than 30 percent.

INTRODUCTION The transportation of men, supplies, and mined material from an underground operation is the connecting link between the mine plant and the surface plant. Unless the mine is accessed by a drift or adit, some form of hoisting system is necessary for slopes or shafts. This chapter will deal with the selection of wire ropes and hoists, two of the most important consider¬ations when designing a hoisting system for an under¬ground mine. WIRE ROPES General A wire rope is designed to transmit forces longitudi¬nally along its axis. Wire rope is used in a variety of mining applications because of its flexibility, high ten¬sile strength, and dependability. Shaft hoisting ropes and principal slope haulage ropes are usually custom-¬built; however, proper rope selection for slushers, car spotters, etc. should not be overlooked. Wire ropes for shafts and slopes, since they represent the life line for the mines, should be of the very highest quality improved plow steel. This quality is necessary to deal with the conditions of loading, winding, vibration, abrasion, and corrosion. Tables I and 2 display the specifications for the typical wire ropes used for mine haulage applications. The 6 x 19-class haulage rope is used for most hoisting where abrasion is not critical. On the other hand, where abrasion is critical, such as a slope application, 6 X 7-class haulage ropes are preferred. For other mining applications, manufactur¬ers' handbooks should be consulted. Selection The selection of a wire rope for a mining situation consists of simply applying appropriate safety factors to a calculated maximum rope pull and comparing the result to the listed breaking strength of the rope under consideration. Table 3 can be used for determin¬ing the minimum factors of safety for wire ropes. To determine the maximum rope pull, the following quantities must be known: the rope weight in pounds (x), the conveyance weight in pounds (y), and the weight in pounds of the load in the conveyance (z). These values are used to calculate the load due to gravity, the load due to conveyance friction, and the load due to rope friction. When these loads are added together, as shown in Eq. 1, the maximum (static) rope pull (RPS) can be derived:

"Within the energy concept of the German government, the operating time of nuclear power plants was initially extended from about 8 to 14 years. It is planned, however, that every power plant will gradually be decommissioned until 2025 and that simultaneously the amount of renewable energies will successively be expanded. According to the political state, nuclear energy is a discontinued model. Looking at the global energy market, though, an obviously opposed development can be observed. At the moment, 443 nuclear power plants are running worldwide and further 62 facilities are being built. These about 500 nuclear power stations have to be supplied with nuclear fuel right now and in the future. The present paper will describe the worldwide use of nuclear energy, the extraction of the nuclear fuel uranium and in detail the available and predicted resources of uranium. The conclusion of the paper is the statement that uranium as nuclear fuel is no scarce resource but sufficiently available."

The development of a tool for assessing the environmental sustainability of mining facilities is described in this study. The tool is based on the analysis of basic components of the examined system, i.e., the quantities of the incoming materials and outgoing wastes, their hazardousness and scarcity, the utilization of water and energy resources, and the biodiversity. The developed tool provides both qualitative and quantitative assessment of the environmental performance of a mining facility in a broad time scales (past-present-future) and is easily applicable from non environmental experts. Moreover, relative software is developed to further support the application of the methodology. The implementation of the tool is expected to lead to an improved understanding of the environmental performance of a mining facility and more importantly identify the areas of significant environmental concern. However, based on feedback from industries, a number of shortcomings of the approach have been identified so far and are presented, indicating further actions for the advancement of the proposed tool.

Acid rock drainage (ARD) is produced when sulfides are exposed to oxygen and water. Oxidation reactions typically result in a depression of pH and leaching of solutes and metals. Many oxidation models have been developed based on oxygen diffusion, but in environments with high permeability, other transport processes (i.e., convection and advection) can play an important role. Multiple sulfide mineral phases with differing oxidation rates should also be incorporated. WROC, a finite-difference model, was developed to account for these factors in predicting ARD. The program includes sulfide mineral oxidation using a shrinking core mechanism, heat transfer by conduction, heat of reaction, and oxygen transport by diffusion and advection. The model was validated using data from the literature. After validation, the WROC model was used to simulate several different waste rock scenarios including different forms of sulfide mineralization and the effect of implementing a waste rock cover. The results demonstrate that including specific sulfide mineral phases can have a significant effect on oxidation and that implementation of a cover can also aid in reducing waste rock oxidation. Representative samples are required from process streams in order to accurately measure chemical and physical characteristics. This information can then be used by process operators and metallurgists to evaluate the process and effect control actions for the operation. The capture and presentation of representative samples can be critical to measuring values, such as elemental analysis and particle size, with on-line or near-stream analyzers. A comprehensive multi-physics model has been developed and used to better understand the effects of slurry flow and particle segregation under certain operating parameters. An algebraic slip model coupled with a free surface algorithm is used to track motion and position of particles and phases within a specified geometry.

As part of the New York City’s redevelopment of the far west side of mid-town Manhattan, this project will add 1.5 miles of twin bored tunnel to No. 7 Subway Line. The proposed alignment extending from the Times Square Station west beneath 41stStreet turning south under Eleventh Avenue and terminating at 25th Street will include two new stations. The tunnels and station caverns will be primarily constructed in the Manhattan Schist, and will pass in close proximity to several major overly ingstructures. This paper discusses the lithology and structural discontinuities of rockmass along the project alignment, tunnel and cavern rock loading, groundwater hydrology, groundwater quality, groundwater treatment and sustainable design.

Lost foam casting patterns are foamed polystyrene shapes glued together into the shape of the part to be cast and are coated with a refractory material consisting of a mineral mixture and binders. Prior to casting, a significant number of the patterns are damaged and inevitably land-filled. In this study, a process is developed for the recovery of foamed polystyrene from the coating and glue contaminants. The process consists of shredding, impact comminution, size classification and density separation. It is successful in separating up to 97% of the contaminants, while recovering 95% of the polystyrene.

I would like to share some observations about the mining business and place the ongoing discussion in the context of our changed world. The mining industry practices its trade in a universe defined by prices, laws and governments. Prices, as in what the industry is paid for what it produces, and the costs of goods and services. Laws that have to be transparent and fair. And governments that the industry prefers to be stable and supportive of the industry, and certainly not corrupt. However, the day-to-day realities of the mining business in 2000 are not what they were 10 years ago. Several events have occurred that have resulted in a less populated workplace that is obliged to work much smarter and faster. These include real declining prices for most mineral commodities; low and diminishing returns to company shareholders; massive restructuring of the industry through mergers, partnerships and alliances; gold’s changed role from reserve currency to just another commodity; the growing importance of native title and the startling imperatives of “sustainable development.” In addition, the “borderless world” now means that resource companies will need to pass the test of being responsible corporate guests who respect and enhance the social, moral and societal values of their host countries.
