The Purpose of the Paper It is fitting that the first paper of a session on the Financial Aspects of Mining should be on the basic data upon which any financial discussion of a mining project must be based. The history of a mining project starts with exploration in an area considered geologically favorable for mineralization and culminates in the discovery of a body of valuable mineral material commonly known as a mineral deposit. Subsequently more detailed exploration establishes the approximate size, shape, tonnage and average grade of the deposit by surface and/or underground drilling, -surface trenching and/or underground workings. Some preliminary metallurgical testing and other studies, as required, are made at this time. Development work is then carried out to provide representative samples for determining flowsheet and metallurgical balances, preparing the deposit for production and establishing more firmly the grade and mining characteristics of the deposit. A feasibility study is then made of the engineering aspects of the project including the estimation of operating coats, the capital required to place the deposit into production, profit and return on investment. "Strategies to improve performance in mining production, maintenance and mineral processing operations have evolved over time from straightforward time studies of individual machine performance in the 1960s-1970s to more sophisticated and better focused statistical and financial tools that have emerged in the 1980s-1990s. These newer strategies fall under the broad descriptive category of operational excellence.Operational excellence is the term that embodies a number of performance evaluating strategies, the most popular and relevant to mining include the following:• Six sigma for addressing errors within mining or milling process and work standards.• Lean manufacturing to optimize organizational and operational performance through continuous improvement.There are other strategies that can be applied as well and this paper is not focused on a review of the pros and cons of any one strategy. However, the common threads in these strategies embody the expectation that expected results from these efforts can be quantified and that value will positively benefit the targeted work process, organizational unit, equipment deployment or time schedule when applied to it as part of continuous improvement efforts.The priority for proceeding with any one or more of these efforts is based on the calculated net value of the required resources to make the change versus the estimated value gained. The practice is identified as the value mapping process.This discussion summarizes the value mapping process methodology used at a mature uranium mine and mill in northern Canada to work through the myriad of potential improvement efforts available through the operational excellence process for continuous improvement."

The Atlantic City iron mine is located in Fremont County in central Wyoming, near the historic gold mining camps of Atlantic City and South Pass City. The mine lies on the southeast flank of the Wind River Mountains at an elevation of about 2,470 m (8,100 ft) above sea level (Fig. 1). An 81-h M2 (200-acre) tailings impoundment at the Atlantic City taconite operation has been a source of blowing dust. The site qualified for reclamation under Wyoming&apos;s Abandoned Mine Land (AML) reclamation program. The ultimate reclamation construction incorporated commercially available organic amendments and fertilizers into a 300-mm- (12-in.-) thick cap of a sterile clay loam cover material. The water level was lowered in an adjacent flooded mine pit that was feeding uncontrolled seeps into the tailings basin. A wide tailings pond spillway was built that allows flood control while minimizing seasonal water-level fluctuations in the pond. Rock berms and rock snow fences were built for wind-erosion control and soil-moisture preservation. Future work includes tree planting in the protective wind/ snow shadows of rock berms and rock snow fences and plugging a decant pipe. US Steel opened the Atlantic City iron mine in August 1962. It closed in 1983. Taconite iron ore was mined by surface methods. The ore was magnetically separated from the waste. The magnetic concentrate was mixed with bentonite, formed into pellets and roasted to produce a blast furnace feed stock for US Steel&apos;s blast furnaces in Geneva, UT. The pellets were hauled by rail to the Geneva Iron Works. The Atlantic City Mine produced three types of wastes. These included waste rock overburden from mining, a coarse-grained (sand to small-gravel sized), nonmagnetic reject rock termed "cobbs" and fine-grained tailings ranging from 600 to 75 µm (28 to <200 mesh). The quality of water in mine pit lakes depends in part on the physical limnology, including such factors as thermal and chemical stratification, turnover and the development of anoxic conditions with depth. Limnologic data collected from four existing pit lakes in Montana and Saskatchewan indicate that pit lakes develop a thermocline (temperature stratification) in the upper 10 to 30 m (33 to 100 ft) of the water column. Two of the pit lakes, 26- and 55-m (85and 180 ft) deep, undergo seasonal turnover of the entire water column, whereas two deeper pit lakes, 110- and 240-m (360- to 790 ft) deep, undergo seasonal turnover of only the upper portion of the water column. In the deeper lakes, seasonal mixing does not extend through the entire water column, and a distinct chemocline develops with depth.

Zoning is the legal means by which land use can be controlled. Although zoning laws have historically been quick to prevent quarrying, one is hard pressed to find zoning ordinances which specifically state that land should be used (or held in reserve) for quarrying and prevent other uses such as recreation, housing, etc. This situation is especially true when the mineral to be quarried has a low intrinsic value such as sand, gravel, and crushed stone. The chance of a gold mine surviving urban sprawl is probably considerably greater than that of a sand and gravel pit, even though it is possible that the dollar value of the sand and gravel&apos; would exceed that of the gold mine. The research reported herein was concerned with two major topics: to delineate the real costs associated with the non-protection of our construction aggregate resources (growth minerals) and to develop a computer simulation model which would aid planners in making economically sound decisions. This paper describes the problems faced by the mineral aggregate industry and discusses the role of computer simulation in planning problems. It briefly describes a simulation model which has been developed and previously reported12 and discusses the results of a pilot study conducted on the Tri-City area (Albany, Schenectady, and Troy, New York). 3

A reliable estimate of radon emissions to the environment from underground uranium mines was obtained through measurements of radon in ventilation air at 24 mines and from estimates of radon release from other mine sources. The total production of U308 from the mines sampled represents about 63% of the total U.S. production from underground mines (1978 statistics). Wide variation in the radon emission rate per unit of production was found from mine to mine. Using the total radon emitted and U308 produced by all mines sampled, an average of 26.7 Ci of radon was emitted per ton of U309 produced. The investigation includes a brief study of the sources of variation of the emission rates. A statistically significant relationship was found between the measured radon release rate and the cumulative ore production at several mines.

The permeability in the blast furnace shaft is adversely affected by low temperature reduction degradation of sinters. The fundamental cause is an expansion of the iron oxide phase resulting from reduction of hematite to magnetite. The present study showed that expansion behavior during the hematite / magnetite reduction step and the resulting microstructure are strongly influenced by the reduction temperature (viz. partial oxygen pressure), the reducing agent and the nature of the hematite. The reduction rate is of minor importance. A reduction mechanism is proposed, explaining the dilation behavior and the magnetite microstructure. The results can provide better insight into reduction degradation behavior.

Introduction Despite the focus on the so-called "high-tech" and service components of the economy, the minerals industry in 1987 continued to provide the world the overwhelmingly dominant share of the total raw material supply for all manufacturing operations. And, in the form of fertilizers and other soil treatment materials, minerals also supplied indispensable raw materials to ensure continued high production of the agricultural and forestry sectors of the world&apos;s economy. Moreover, the role of minerals as a source of construction raw materials was essential to that sector. On the basis of preliminary and partial statistics on world output of crude mineral commodities, 1987 appears to have been a year of further recovery from the recessional years of 1981-1983. The value of world crude mineral industry production (all mineral commodities including fuels) apparently advanced about 5% to nearly $1.1 trillion in terms of constant 1983 dollars.&apos; That is significantly above the recently revised 1986 level of nearly $1.05 trillion, but still considerably below the record-to-date high of $1.27 trillion set in 1980, as shown in Table 1. That growth in value took place despite relatively flat world oil prices - oil being the most important component of the aggregate, as it has been for decades. There is insufficient information available to assess the total value of processed mineral commodities (refined metals, refined oil, manufactured fertilizers and the like). But a figure of $2.6 trillion (constant 1983 dollars) would be a quite conservative estimate for those materials derived only from primary or newly mined materials. And an additional, as-yet-unestimated increment should be added for processed materials derived from secondary raw materials - scrap and other reclaimed substances. From a world trade viewpoint, minerals and mineral products dominate in terms of tonnage. For example, in 1985, on a weight basis, mineral commodities including fuels constituted more than 58% of all goods moving through the Suez Canal and 53% of all goods passing through the Panama Canal. These waterways cannot accommodate giant tankers and ore carriers. So an even larger share of total oceanic trade is composed of minerals and mineral products. Yet, in terms of value, the share of the total accounted for by these industrial essentials is much lower than that accounted for by other commodities, most notably sophisticated high-tech equipment and other goods with a relatively high per-pound value. Worldwide data on the value of mineral export trade for 1987 is so incomplete at this writing that it is impossible to assess that actual level. Indeed, the compilation of similar available data for 1986 covers only the exports of nations with developed market economies. In 1985, these countries accounted for only 67% of total world exports of all goods. They accounted for only 41% of world exports of major mineral commodities: crude nonmetals; metal ores, concentrates, and scrap; mineral fuels; nonferrous metals excluding gold; and iron and steel. For these developed-market-economy countries, the value of exports of these major mineral commodities declined by more than 10% between 1985 and 1986. The mineralogy and textures of cyclone dust, sludge, and occasional build-ups in the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) direct iron making pilot plant at Universal, Pennsylvania have been studied by reflected light, transmitted light, and cathodoluminescence microscopy, and phase compositions have been determined by SEM-EDS. The cyclone dust consists of particles of carbon, metallic iron, sulfur-bearing iron, and wustite. Measurements of particles in the sludge indicate that 69% are less than 2.5 µm across, 21 % are 2.5-5 µm, and 10% are larger than 5 µm. Mineralogically the sludge particles are mainly carbon and metallic iron, with minor wustite and sulfur-bearing iron. Build-ups that sporadically develop in the furnace consist of olivine, hercynite spinel, metallic iron, wustite, pyrrhotite, pseudobrookite, akermanite-ferroakermanite and gehlenite. The microtextures shown by the build-ups indicate that much of that material has precipitated at the build-up loci. This study has been supported by AISI and the U.S. Department of Energy.

In underground continuous mining operations, ventilation, water sprays and machine-mounted flooded-bed scrubbers are the primary means of controlling respirable dust exposures at the working face. Changes in mining arrangements — such as face ventilation configuration, orientation of crosscuts mined in relation to the section ventilation and equipment operator positioning — can have impacts on the ability of dust controls to reduce occupational respirable dust exposures. This study reports and analyzes dust concentrations measured by the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division for remotecontrolled continuous mining machine operators as well as haulage operators at 10 U.S. underground mines. The results of these respirable dust surveys show that continuous miner exposures varied little with depth of cut but are significantly higher with exhaust ventilation. Haulage operators experienced elevated concentrations with blowing face ventilation. Elevated dust concentrations were observed for both continuous miner operators and haulage operators when working in crosscuts driven into or counter to the section airflow. Individual cuts are highlighted to demonstrate instances of minimal and excessive dust exposures attributable to particular mining configurations. These findings form the basis for recommendations for lowering face worker respirable dust exposures.

"The copper sulfide ore from the Legnica-Glogow Copper Basin in Poland, which is processed by KGHM Polska Miedz S.A., consists of three lithological fractions: dolomitic, sandstone and shale. The copper ore, depending on the mining area, contains all fractions in different ratios. The lithological fractions differ in the particle-size distributions of their useful minerals. In the dolomitic part of the ore, most of the metal sulfide particles are 50-200 microns in size, while those in the sandstone and carbonaceous shale are 30-200 and 5-40 microns in size, respectively. This complex composition results in different mineralization, physicochemical properties and, in particular, upgrading selectivity. Due to the specific nature of the examined copper ore, two of the crucial parameters determining the beneficiation efficiency are size and liberation of sulfide particles. We analyzed the influence of grain size of feed on scavenging selectivity in one of the KGHM flotation plants and performed evaluation and analysis of the upgrading results of industrial beneficiation of the ore, containing mostly dolomite and shale. The upgrading efficiency was estimated using a selectivity indicator obtained by means of the Fuerstenau upgrading curve, which was then correlated with the particle-size distribution of the flotation feed.IntroductionFroth flotation is used extensively in commercial ore treatment flotation plants to separate minerals from gangue and to separate minerals from each other. The floatability of ores and their benefication selectivity are determined by many factors. One of them is particle size. The effect of particle size on flotation performance has been widely studied by many authors (Gaudin et al., 1931; Trahar, 1976; Trahar and Warren, 1976; Lynch et al., 1981; Pease et al., 2004). Particle size also plays a critical role in the probability of particle collision and attachment to bubbles (Solari and Gochin, 1992; Schulze, 1993), kinetic flotation (Taggart, 1956; Ahmed and Jameson, 1985; Debacher, 2002; Brozek and Mlynarczykowska, 2007; Potulska 2008), collector consumption (Sutherland and Wark, 1955; Vianna et al., 2003) and mechanical entrainment (Lynch et al., 1981; George et al., 2004; Konopacka, 2005). Most of the results have shown that there is an optimum particle size range for a given flotation system and that the simultaneous optimization of the recovery and concentrate grade of these particles in conventional flotation equipment is extremely difficult."

There is an increasing requirement for geophysical surveys carried out during geotechnical investigations to provide direct information about rock quality or other geotechnical parameters. With the paucity of information to correlate geophysical results with actual rock properties, this is still difficult to achieve and additional research effort needs to be performed to address this issue. Nowadays, several researchers have been described detailed studies which designed specifically to investigate this matter. Generally, geophysical techniques which are used to estimate seismic velocities in the subsurface focus on the low strain levels that are not large enough to induce significant nonlinear, nonelastic stress-strain behavior (Luna and Jadi, 2000), which is normally evaluated when addressing liquefaction potential of soils in the shallow subsurface. Soil parameters relevant to seismic ground response (Rechtien, 1996) are density, relative density and void ratio, permeability, shear modulus, water saturation, soil fabric and stress history. Detailed characterization of elastic properties near a major construction site (e.g. a bridge) is useful for near field dynamic analysis of soil-structure interaction (SSI) effects. The coupled effect of the bridge foundation (piles, piers or abutments) and the soil immediately surrounding these substructure elements is essential for dynamic SSI analysis of these critical bridge structures. This paper presents a geophysical investigation performed along the under construction highway of Egnatia Odos, approximately 13 km west from the town of Xanthi in N. Greece. Twelve geotechnical boreholes, drilled at the maximum depth of 75 m, approximately located 20 m from the Nestos River. The objective of the survey was to obtain the high-resolution compressional and shear wave velocities of the shallow subsurface for computation of elastic engineering properties of the unconsolidated material interposed between the investigated boreholes. Joint interpretation of borehole logs and velocity images obtained by P- and S-wave traveltime inversions outlined shallow geological anomalies.

"The Mine Haul Road Optimization Alliance is an Australian industry-academia collaboration which has been developed to support mine haul road operators by fully integrating mine road design research solutions with industry end-user service providers to design, assess, implement and monitor the various equipment, materials and road management strategies required to optimize the safety, environmental and economic performance of a haul road. Initially, a broad overview of the university-industry collaborative landscape is presented, following which the current situation in the Australian mining sector is reviewed both nationally, and on a country-wide basis, internationally. This insight places realization of a collaboration between Curtin University Western Australian School of Mines Mining Engineering and Metallurgical Engineering (WASM ME2) and the Haul Road Optimization Alliance (HROA) industry members into context of opportunity. Following an overview of the HROA collaborative structure, aims and objectives, it is shown how academia and industry can collaborate to deliver a more robust solution to mine haul road design, performance or management needs, especially where integrated solutions are needed. Critically in this approach, implementation and monitoring data provided by industry and service-providers alike forms the foundation on which to develop research knowledge and innovation that is more responsive to the end-user requirements, typically represented by ‘early goals’ and implementable solutions. The paper concludes with examples of how the alliance collaborations work in practice to deliver improved mine haul road designs and optimized operational performance, together with the mechanisms used to ensure industry needs are met through focused, end-user driven research and integrated solutions implementation."

In addition to directly analyzing the surfaces of minerals using high vacuum instrumentation methods, some important surface properties of mineral fillers can be determined indirectly by using reactive chemical probe molecules. This technique enables the strength and the number of the surface reactive sites to evaluation and this type of information is useful in predicting interfacial behaviour of minerals. One method of classifying these surface sites is by using Lewis acid/base theory and this type of approach could enable one to predict the adsorption of functional groups in dispersants, thickeners, pigments, etc. Also the adhesion of polymer matrices to the filler surface may be improved.

Alluvial gold is abundant in the Quaternary deposits of the Kabul and Indus rivers in District Nowshera, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Understanding the provenance of alluvial gold using morphology and elemental composition could be helpful in developing an exploration strategy of regional benefit. Detailed morphological studies of gold grains revealed high flatness index values which are indicative of a distal source. Compositional studies of 58 gold grains using SEM and EMPA showed broadly similar Ag ranges (1– 15 wt%) for each sample and occasional Cu values in individual gold particles to 0.4 wt%.Whilst the Ag profile is not diagnostic, the Cu values are compatible with derivation from either porphyry systems or ultrabasic rocks. The complex geology of the drainage catchments could host gold mineralization of other styles, but larger sample suites would be required to refine the current interpretation to establish whether particles which are simple Au-Ag alloys could be derived fromorogenic or epithermal sources. This scoping study has demonstrated that the compositional and morphological studies of gold grains are useful in providing information regarding the nature and location of the source of placer gold in areas where there is limited information on the nature and location of in situ mineralization.

San Antonio has experienced sustained growth for decades, putting increased pressure on existing wastewater infrastructure. In June 2013, San Antonio Water System (SAWS) reached a Consent Decree agreement that requires significant improvements to the wastewater system over a 10-year period to reduce Sanitary Sewer Overflows. One of the critical projects was the W-6 Upper Segment Tunnel project to reduce sanitary sewer overflows on an existing sewer main running through Lackland Airforce Base. The replacement project consisted of a new tunnel nearly 29,000 LF of primarily 104" FRP. The project also includes nine shafts and multiple trenchless crossings to make near surface connections to the new works.

This study investigates upgrading of low-grade banded hematite quartzite iron ore (Fe ~31%). Conventional beneficiation was found to be futile. The susceptibility of iron phases to microwave exposure and their selective absorption assists in the liberation of iron values. Microwave exposure of coarse particles at 540 W for 10 min yielded a concentrate with Fe 56.30% and recovery of 50.68%. Conventional carbothermic reduction at 500 °C, 60 min and 9% charcoal yielded a concentrate with Fe 57.6% and iron recovery of 68%. The presence of sufficiently bonded silica leads to an easy formation of a fayalite phase. The microwave reduction design yielded FeG of 57.6%, FeR of 47% and a yield of 24% at an optimal condition of 540 W, 8 min and 6% charcoal. It was found that a small fraction of microwave-irradiated ore-charcoal mixture melted rapidly, and pure ferrite balls were observed within 8 min. In June 2022, Louisville MSD completed a 6.5 km (4-mile), 6.1 m (20-foot) finisheddiameter CSO conveyance and storage tunnel system located along the Ohio River in downtown Louisville, Kentucky. During construction, the Ohio River Tunnel alignment was expanded 2.4 km (1.5 miles) into areas where natural gas was detected. Without delaying construction, the project team developed and implemented a natural gas risk mitigation strategy to safely excavate the tunnel via TBM and install concrete lining. The risk mitigation strategy included the installation of gas-vent borings, increased tunnel ventilation, retrofitting tunneling equipment for “gassy” operations, and modifying the project specific HASP.

"Sampling is the process of taking a small portion of an article such that the consistency of the portion shall be representative of the whole," (Baxter and Parks, 1939)."An orebody is a mixture of minerals in proportions that vary in different parts of the mass. As a consequence, the proportion of contained metals also varies from place to place. Therefore, a single sample taken in any particular place would not contain the same proportion of metals as does the orebody as a whole except by a highly improbable coincidence."The probable error, which would be very large if only one sample were taken, decreases with the number of samples, but it never disappears completely unless the samples are so numerous and so large that their aggregate is equal to the orebody itself, in which case the orebody would be completely used up in the process of sampling."Since carrying sampling to such an extreme would defeat its own purpose, some probable error is always present in actual cases and the practical objective is to reduce this probable error to allowable limits. This means balancing the number of samples against the desired accuracy; if there are not enough samples the result is unreliable; if there are too many, the time and expense of taking them is excessive." (McKinstry, et al., 1948).In an actual orebody, the accuracy of sampling depends not only on the number of samples but also on their proper distribution throughout the orebody, for it would obviously be incorrect to take all of the samples either in a rich part or a lean part. Therefore, it is important to select the places in such a way that all parts of the orebody will be represented."

Coal spontaneous combustion is one of the major disasters in coal mines, and it can have devastating effects on the normal mining and production activities of mines. This paper presents the field investigation, field measurement, data analysis, and formulation of fire-extinguishing measures conducted to extinguish the fire from a coal spontaneous combustion incident that occurred in a high-gas coal mine in China.
