A 9-meter-long drift was constructed in the unsaturated-fractured tuff at Yucca Mountain to evaluate the potential for water seeping into an underground opening. Forty seepage tests were performed by releasing a finite volume of water at a constant rate into short test intervals located in boreholes positioned above the drift. The seepage threshold flux, defined as the liquid-release flux at and below which water will not drip into the opening, was determined for 10 test intervals. The seepage data, observations, and model results indicate that a seepage threshold exists because a capillary barrier diverts water around the opening.

Naturally occurring asbestos in aggregate and other mineral deposits, and the release of asbestos fibers into the ambient environment, is a public health concern. Determining the presence of asbestos in an ore body also presents a considerable sampling and analytical challenge. Improper and inaccurate identification of asbestos can result in unwarranted public and worker panic leading to significant costs to mine operators both in terms of dollars and company image. Some companies have been forced out of business simply because they had the non-asbestiform, prismatic variety of one of the six asbestos minerals. In the late 70’s, asbestos was found as a contaminate in a trap rock quarry in Rockville, Maryland. This discovery led to a massive overreaction by federal, state and local governments. In 1986, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) promulgated a final rule that regulated the common non-asbestiform mineral habits of actinolite, tremolite, and anthophyllite as if they were asbestos. The rule was reversed after a six-year struggle. Recently, the Libby, Montana, W. R. Grace vermiculite - asbestos, as well as the California chrysotile in serpentinite, and the New Jersey Southdown quarry – asbestos events have rekindled the entire issue of naturally occurring asbestos. It is time to get this concern addressed with sound science so that real asbestos is properly identified and controlled.

The assurance of future raw materials supply to the EU mineral industry has become, in recent years, one of the most important tasks of the EU Commission. It is focused on creation a new mineral policy within the EU zone. One of the starting points for this activity was identification of the mineral commodities that are critical for the sustainable development and technological progress. The paper presents the glance to this problem from the National Member level. Domestic mineral reserve base as a possible source of critical raw materials for the EU was shown. Poland cannot be considered as its resource base. The source of these raw materials are not only scarce in Poland, but also they are not produced, and their demand is now - and according to forecasts is going to be in the future - met by imports. The raw materials in question are not considered exactly critical for Polish economy, but they are of limited economic importance. On the other hand, their growth is a best opportunity and at once the need to the future sustainable development.

Our industry is in trouble. Real trouble. It has never been an easy, secure business. But to-day it is engulfed in revolutionary currents. No longer can there be reliance upon the checks and balances of market forces. Supply and demand largely dictated the economics of business enterprise in simpler days. To-day politics, in particular nationalism become increasingly dominant. And as governments expand and put out tentacles of interference in the direction of the mining industry, far too little understanding is evidenced as to how that industry works. Then there is something which is relatively new -stagflation. As the prices of minerals falls, the capital investment required for new extractive facilities soars at rates which far outdistance those which are cited by governments to indicate the magnitude of inflation. To illustrate; 1) In 1971 it was calculated that $355 million would be required to bring the Cuajone property in Peru into production. Five years later that stage was reached at a cost of $680 million. 2) With the Caridad mine in Mexico, estimated capital investment doubled between 1971 and 1976. 3) The requirements calculated for Cerro Colorado in Panama have risen in two years from $560 to $800. 4) The budget of $240 million for Sar Chesmeh in Iran in 1971 had become $500 million by 1976.

The Rasmussen Ridge phosphate mine is owned by Agrium CPO and operated by a unit of Washington Group International. The mine, located in southeastern Idaho, received the Idaho Inter-Agency Reclamation Award from the Idaho Department of Lands. The phosphate mine, located northeast of Soda Springs, was honored for “Excellence in Ongoing Operations, Soft Rock Mines over 75Acres.” Charles Ross is Agrium CPO’s plant manager. He said, “We are honored to receive this award. This recognizes the commitment and dedication of our employees toward the protection of the environment. I am really proud of the people that work at the mine.”

There was a time when heavy-duty apron feeders were built to last almost forever. The machines were heavy and built to maintain certain expected longevity and reliability. Increasing emphasis on return on capital leads to cost-effective designs. Costs can be increased or decreased, depending on customer specifications and the design philosophy of the feeder manufacturer. Specifiers can make important contributions to cost effectiveness. To do so, this article describes what should be known about planning with a supplier for heavy-duty apron feeders. There are several factors that should be considered, including capacity, characteristics of material carried, length, method of feeder loading, degree of lift, hopper opening, pan construction, and type of drive. Today's apron feeders are built in various sizes and with a variety of components to handle heavy, lumpy, or abrasive materials that can ruin lighter feeders. Careful feeder selection is important if it is to provide a controlled feed rate, absorb huge impacts, be used with long hopper openings, and have a relatively low power-perton capacity. Variations in systems and materials demand that each feeder be designed for its application, drawing on a wide range of components. Therefore, certain factors must be considered before final specifications are drawn. Capacity The design and application of an apron feeder is based on how material passes through a given system over the feeder into processing machinery. The processing machinery's capacity governs other equipment and productivity of the flow. From this basic information, related sizes of upstream equipment can be determined. Of these, the apron feeder acts as the "mouth and neck of the bottle." No more will pass than the mouth and neck will accommodate. Everything in the apron feeder design, from dimensions to power, is based on processing machinery. Material Considerations Are Vital Just as the nature of materials to be crushed or screened affects capacity and productivity of a crusher or a grinding mill, so does it affect capacity and performance of a feeder. Lump size must be identified closely so the pan width can be selected to accommodate the maximum lump with room to spare. Man’s search beneath the earth for minerals has always required light, and the devices used to provide illumination have been both innovative and unusual —from stone vessels holding fat and a wick of grass or fiber to a shower of sparks produced by a thin steel disc. While the date when lamps were first used in mines is unknown, Greek and Roman records from 3000 BC definitely mention their use in underground mines. Early Remans most likely used a lamp similar to the one depicted at right. Over the ages, various types of devicives and methods of illumination have been tried and used. One interesting scheme for underground light was to reflect sunlight down the shaft and along drifts using mirrors or other reflective materials. Bunches of resinous wood were also used for underground lighting in many parts of England. In the mid-18th century, the speding mill was developed in England. It worked by rapidly turning a thin steel disc against a flint, causing a shower of sparks to appear. The light produced was uncertain, highly variable, and unsafe in gaseous environments. In Europe, an open pan-type hanging oil lamp was developed and used in some operations in the 1700s. This type of lamp had one opening for a wick and a second opening for refilling the oil reservoir. The lamps were embellished with goad luck charms – a good luck rooster was used in many parts of Europe while a frog and “gluck-auf” were used in Germany. These lamps were introduced in Mexican mines, and a few have found their way into the southwest US. By 1850, a small wick lamp known as the lard-oil lamp, which resembled a tea pot, was invented in Scotland. These lamps were fueled with grease from a packing house –lard, bacon grease, or tallow. Whale oil was also used. Many improvements were made on these lamps, such as the use of windshields and the attachment of miners’ candle-holdm to support the lamp. While these lamps were handy and inexpensive to operate, they were dangerous because their large flame could ignite support timbers or other flammable materials. Miners from the United Kingdom brought this type of lamp into the US. Domestic producers of oil wick lamps were primarily located in Hazleton, PA; What Cheer, IA; Pittsburgh, PA; and Frostburg, IN. The first patent for an oil wick lamp was granted to W. Seybold of McKeesport, PA. Incidentally, these lamps were advertised in a 1903 Sears-Roebuck catalog for 10 cents apiece. Oil wick

The ability to accurately model the movement of grade boundaries during a typical bench blast would be of significant benefit to mine operators. The movement of grade boundaries during the blasting process may have significant impact on grade recovery if not accounted for. The paper describes the preliminary stages of a research project which combines numerical blast models and conventional mine planning software to allow practical use of the results of a numerical blast simulation. A two dimensional bench blast is simulated using the Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC). The results of the simulation are used to provide input to the Surpac mine planning package which can be used to generate grade control plans.

This paper documents the growth and projects the future of Green Diamond Sand Products. Since1954, Green Diamond, located in Riddle, Oregon, has been producing sand from granulated nickel slag for use in various markets. Through the years, the company has seen several changes from its ownership to its product lines. In 1991, Green Diamond was producing abrasive sand at a rate of about 30,000 tons per year. It was at this time that Green Diamond became part of Glenbrook Nickel Company. Over the next eight years, Green Diamond would quadruple its production to over 140,000 tons while moving into three new markets, as well. Green Diamond is now producing sand for use in the abrasive, foundry, construction, and roofing industries. In 1998, Green Diamond again found itself under new, private ownership. With plans on developing agricultural sand and spent abrasives recycling, the future of Green Diamond appears to be one of further expansion coupled with diversification of its product lines.

Due to deposit shape and dimension, narrow vein makes reserve modeling, geological control, stope design, drill and blasting more challenging. It needs high standard quality control as errors can be created easily, which could cause significant amount of ore loss or dilution. From channel sampling, survey control, reserve modeling, drill hole design, blasting, communication with underground drillers to backfill, this paper illustrated every step and its quality control of a long hole stope mining. Compared to other narrow vein mining methods (cut and fill and shrinkage), long hole stoping means higher production, less labor, and significantly lower cost when deposit characteristics allowed.

The leaching behavior of silver and silver oxides in ammonical solutions has been studied. The current study is concerned with an effective recovery of silver from secondary sources such as spent silver batteries. Silver associated with these batteries appears in various forms including metallic silver, argentous oxide, Ag2O and argentic oxide, AgO. The leaching behavior of metallic silver in ammoniacal solution has been studied using an electrochemical mehtod. Oxidants used in this study include hyperchlorite, hydrogen peroxide, bromine and iodine. Results on cyclic polarization and Tafel plots on the silver anode in ammoniacal solutions are presented and the results are discussed. The dissolution rate of metallic silver in ammoniacal solutions is also compared with those of silver oxides.

At the same time that computers and robotics move the shop floor toward becoming the unmanned "factory of the future" [1], they increase the need within the overall production enterprise for new types of technicians and engineering professionals [2]. Based on previous works which examined, first, the evolution of the technology of manufacturing toward the flexibly-automated factory of the future and, second, the technical- professionalization of U.S. manufacturing sectors [1,3], this paper looks briefly at the workforce of the U.S. metals industry.

Precambrian terranes in the Rocky Mountain region decrease progressively in age from the Archean Wyoming Province (> 2.5 b.y.) to the late Proterozoic in West Texas (figs. 1,2). Within the Wyoming Province, most dates fall near 2.7 b.y. although some are recorded at 2 3.8, 2.9, and 2.6 b.y. Although Penokean (- 1.8 b.y.) deformation and plutonism are recorded in southeastern Wyoming, most Precambrian rocks south of the Wyoming shear zone, which separates the Archean and Proterozoic provinces, are < 1.76 b. years in age. Supracrustal rocks in Colorado, western Arizona, and northern New Mexico fall in the range of 1.72-1.76 b.y., those in central New Mexico about 1.65 b.y., those in southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico about 1.70 b.y., and those in West Texas 1.1-1.2 b.y. The Wyoming Province is comprised chiefly of 2.7 or 2.9 b.y. tonalitic gneiss terranes intruded by 2.6 b.y. granites in the central and southern parts of the province. Supracrustal rocks are minor and include greenstone belts comprised chiefly of pillow- ed tholeiites and graywackes and remnants of quartzite-shale successions. Metamorphic grade in greenstone-gneiss terranes ranges from upper greenschist to amphibolite facies and in quartzite-gneiss terranes from upper amphibolite to granulite facies.

Hong Kong’s Strategic Sewage Disposal Scheme (SSDS) Stage I involves the provision of a system of deep tunnels for transporting to a central treatment works wastewater collected from a number of catchments around Victoria Harbour. For the SSDS Stage I works, about 24 km of tunnels have been excavated in hard rock at depths ranging from about 80 to 150 m below Victoria Harbour and the surrounding heavily developed areas of Kowloon and Hong Kong. Five tunnel boring machines(TBMs) with diameters ranging from 3.2 m to 4.3 m were used to excavate the tunnels. Tunnel excavation has been completed and tunnel linings are in progress. Major tunnelling issues such as ground stabilisation and water control encountered in the project are summarised. An overview of one of the possible future tunnel systems that might be adopted in subsequent stages of SSDS is also presented.

To reduce or eliminate incidents/accidents caused by ground fall, this paper clarified how to design and select ground support based on different ground conditions, how to use mine ground support standards, what geotechnical engineers and underground operators should do to keep mine production free of ground failures.

Safety departments have traditionally been held responsible for the safety performance of their division or company. This approach leads to a lack of ownership of safety issues by the larger organization. An alternative paradigm is significantly more effective: the members of the work force (managers as well as workers) are fully responsible and accountable for safe production. The safety department is not extinct, however. Its role has changed, to focus on training, litigation, and external relationships such as community relations. This approach was implemented at BHP Copper&apos;s Superior mine and mill in Arizona. By obtaining the genuine commitment of the work force to accident-free production, the mill&apos;s MSHA incident rate immediately dropped from 7.4 to zero. The mill also ran one year with no MSHA citations. When this philosophy was implemented at the divisional level, the division&apos;s incident rate decreased from 9.5 to 1.1,an 88-percent reduction in six months.

Vermiculite is currently mined from shallow (less than 25 m or 80 ft) surface deposits throughout the world. The largest producers are Palabora Mining of Phalabowra, South Africa (ore stock is a phlogopitemica), Xinjiang Yuli Xinlong Vermiculite of Korla, China, and W.R. Grace of Enoree, SC (ore stock is a biotite mica). Smaller operations are in Australia, Brazil, Russia and Zimbabwe. They also produce vermiculite on a continuous basis but do not export any significant amounts of product to North America. Intermittent and poorly documented production on a minor scale is reported from Argentina, Egypt, India and Uganda. Worldwide vermiculite production in 2004 increased1.7 percent to 432.8 kt (477,000 st). North American production declined, while African and Chinese production continued to increase.

Fortunately, few mining professionals have dealt with what all mining professionals fear---a mine disaster. Unfortunately, many have dealt with ?accidents? which may or may not claim lives but nevertheless rise to the level of a ?disaster? given the fallout of liability and litigation in today?s society.1 The undersigned authors published an article some ten years ago regarding crisis management2 based upon their collective first-hand experiences in actual disasters to that point in history. Unfortunately, disasters have occurred since that time, prompting legislation, and a fresh analysis and expansion of those basic principles is certainly in order. Without question, no two disasters are ever alike, yet general guidelines for forming an effective plan of action can be formulated?and if a mining operation is to have any chance of survival after a disaster, such a plan is vital. The primary concern as any disaster evolves remains as stated a 2003 SME article3--the protection of human life. From that point, the focus moves to any assistance that may be needed given the magnitude of the situation. Permeating throughout this process is "damage control." The first step in dealing with a disaster, however, begins long before any threat of danger arises?formulation and implementation of an Emergency Response Plan.

Since its introduction in 2002, the modern air jig has processed a wide array of coals throughout the world. This paper explores the reasons and justifications for the installations and provides case history performance data. Specifically highlighted are air jig plants processing metallurgical coal in Colombia, bituminous coal in the United States and India and lignite in the United States and Spain. Each installation has unique reasons to justify an air jig facility. It is important to note that not all of the justifications were based on the ?most cost effective yield?, normally a mantra for coal preparation plant designers and owners. Dry jigging of coal has long been a proven technique for upgrading coal, the modern air jig, with its improved efficiency and operating systems simply extended the range of applications. In some cases, it even allows market quality coal to be produced when no other option is possible.

The evaluation of raw materials in terms of quality profile, mineralogical character and mechanical properties is of great importance to the cement industry. The variability of their chemistry and structure is among the decisive design parameters in the choice of any mining, handling and preblending systems. Furthermore, clinker and cement production require sound estimates of the above parameters, to help produce some appropriate and realistic raw mix configurations and achieve minimum standard deviation of the major components. This paper addresses this subject from the perspective of a cement producer and presents the principles of a methodology aimed at optimizing mine planning and process design. Finally, results from case studies on actual sedimentary deposits currently in operation are discussed.
