Selective flocculation and dispersion processes for the concentration of hematite ore are strongly dependent on the ionic content of the process water. It has been noticed that magnesium ions are more detrimental to iron recoveries during desliming and flotation processes than calcium. This phenomenon was studied by measuring the zeta potential of hematite ore at various concentrations of magnesium, calcium, strontium and barium at a pH of 11. Results show that zeta potential inverts from negative to positive at very low concentrations of magnesium ions in the solution. It takes a significantly higher concentration of calcium, ions to achieve the same effect. This difference may be attributed to the ability of magnesium ions to adsorb to all surface hydroxyl groups, whereas calcium, due to their larger size, can only adsorb to every other hydroxyl group. This hypothesis was confirmed by results similar to those seen with calcium when this test was repeated with strontium and barium ions. The tendency for calcium ions to adsorb to every other surface hydroxyl group causes higher concentrations of calcium to be less detrimental to hematite concentration processes than magnesium.

Three sulfide minerals, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, and pyrite, were leached using a bioleaching mode and an electrobioleaching mode. The former mode was used to leach the minerals with the bacterium A. ferrooxidans in a bioreactor. In the latter mode, the leaching of the minerals was performed in a combination of a bioreactor and an electrochemical cell. In this set-up, the solution was circulated between the bioreactor and the cathode compartment, the two reactors were in series, and the cell was operated intermittently. The mechanism is such that an increase in Fe(II) concentration, which is a nutrient of the bacteria, by electrochemical reduction of Fe(III) would increase the bacterial population and in turn would accelerate the leaching of the mineral. It has been found that the electrobioleaching of chalcopyrite is an improvement over the bioleaching with respect to the fact that leaching conversion is higher and a high level of Fe(II) concentration can be maintained. However, the electrobioleaching of sphalerite does not show any improvement over bioleaching. The electrobioleaching of pyrite is similar to that of chalcopyrite, and this has potential to be used in applications such as coal desulfurization and pretreatment of refractory gold ore in heap leaching where fine gold particles are entrapped inside pyrite particles.

This geometallurgical study examines the gangue mineral variability at the Bingham Canyon porphyry copper mine in Utah. Understanding an orebody?s mineralogy is important for mine and mill planning because it provides information on the size, texture, and distribution of ore minerals, the relationship between ore and gangue minerals, and the extent and type of alteration. Quantification of the mineralogical variability and properties of an orebody provides valuable input to the ore model and may have a significant effect on recovery optimization. This study was designed to be carried out on an initially detailed scale in order to develop a robust methodology for measuring and quantifying specific parameters, such as the distribution of mineral phases, alteration assemblages and fractures from key ore domains at the Bingham Canyon mine (Figure 1). Details of the methodology are reported below. This technique can be applied to testing the impact of mineralogy on a number of processing parameters. [ ] Figure 1. The samples for this study were collected from the northwest part of the deposit circled on the map. PROJECT BACKGROUND Geology The Bingham Canyon deposit is a large porphyry Cu-Mo-Au deposit with associated skarn and base-metal replacement deposits mined in an open-pit mine measuring about 2.5 miles across and 4,000 feet deep. The deposit is hosted by the Bingham Stock, a Late Eocene to Mid-Oligocene intrusive complex. The skarn is hosted by the Late Carboniferous-age Bingham Mine Formation, which is comprised of quartzites and basal limestones (Babcock Jr. et al., 1998). The Bingham Stock is a composite intrusive complex that was emplaced over a period of about two million years. The oldest phase is described as a fine-grained equigranular monzonite (MZ), which intruded the country rocks at 39.8 ± 0.4 Ma (U-Pb zircon TIMS age) (Parry et al., 2001). Subsequently, the quartz monzonite porphyry (QMP) was emplaced, followed by intrusion of a latite porphyry (LP). The final intrusive phase, which forms narrow dikes that crosscut the Bingham Stock, is represented by a quartz latite porphyry (QLP), which is dated to 37.5 ± 0.4 Ma by 40Ar/39Ar dating of sanidine (Deino and Keith, 1998). Also present, are a minette dike in contact with a QLP dike (Waite et al., 1998; Deino and Keith, 1998), and a biotite porphyry (BP), a quartz latite porphyry breccia (QLPbx), and a pebble dike (Redmond, 2002). The copper orebody is centered above the Bingham Stock and forms an inverted cup shape with three high-grade copper zones extending to depth. Molybdenite mineralization occurs within and extends below the copper orebody, but is not correlated with copper mineralization. The main sulfide assemblage is chalcopyrite, bornite, molybdenite, and pyrite. Gold is locally intergrown with chalcopyrite and bornite (Babcock Jr. et al., 1998; Phillips et al., 1998). The surrounding country rocks host skarn deposits with three main ore types - garnet skarns, massive sulfides, and iron oxides. The garnet skarns contain chalcopyrite and pyrite with magnetite veins. In the massive sulfides chalcopyrite and pyrite occur either in banded sulfides or in unconsolidated microbreccias. The iron oxides contain disseminated chalcopyrite with minor chalcocite and bornite (Harrison and Reid, 1998). The deposit is overprinted by several stages of alteration. Potassic alteration is concentrated at the center of the deposit. It is surrounded and partially overlapped by a propylitic alteration zone. Both zones are overprinted by sericitic alteration. In the northern part of the deposit evidence for argillic alteration can be found (Bowman et al., 1987). Similarly, the skarn deposit was also overprinted by several stages of alteration: wollastonite, idocrase, and garnet in cherty limestones, and quartz and diopside forming in calcareous quartzites. Distally, diopside was replaced by talc, tremolite, dolomite, secondary calcite, and pyrite, and quartz and sulfide veinlets with biotite and actinolite selvages are present. Andradite garnet, diopside, quartz, magnetite, hematite, and copper sulfides were overprinted by wollastonite (Babcock Jr. et al., 1998). Because the monzonite, quartz monzonite porphyry, latite porphyry, and quartz latite porphyry host the bulk of the mineralization, our research is focused on these lithologic units. Geometallurgy On the basis of geological (lithology, alteration assemblages, fracture density, copper mineralization) and metallurgical properties, the deposit has been divided into 33 ore domains by mine geologists and metallurgists (Figure 1). In map view, these domains cross geologically defined boundaries (MZ, QMP etc.). These domains reflect regions of the deposit that have particular, mapable attributes or properties. They reflect a combination of geological and mineralogical characteristics that combine to impact processing. Alteration, for example, as shown by talc mineralization, is one such key feature. The design of cover systems for reclamation schemes in tailings requires estimation or determination of tailings materials properties such as compressibility, shear strength and consolidation characteristics. It is very difficult and expensive to obtain truly undisturbed tailings samples for laboratory testing. In situ testing methods have been developed for economically obtaining large amounts of information. Two of these methods are described, the piezocone and the flat plate dilatometer. Both of these methods provide a rapid means of detailed material identification in a nearly continuous fashion for the entire depth investigated. The equipment is described and typical data from a uranium tailings impoundment is presented. The results are compared and the advantages and disadvantages of these methods are discussed.

Steady increases in longwall production have required operators to apply greater quantities of ventilating air in an effort to control and dilute respirable dust. Significant increases in shearer speeds necessitate that longwall supports also be advanced at a faster rate. Both of these factors may contribute to overall respirable dust levels on the longwall face because as supports are lowered and advanced, broken material falling from the top of the canopy is entrained directly into the air stream. To address this issue, the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory collected respirable dust samples from four longwall faces to characterize shield-generated dust. This paper investigates the influence of air velocity and shield advance rates on respirable dust levels. Also discussed are engineering controls currently used to reduce shield dust and alternative controls being investigated by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).

This paper explores the impact of the significant difference between the number of geochemical assays conducted for grade estimation and the number of comminution tests performed for throughput and performance forecasting. Both grade and throughput are key factors in determining the project. We analysed 154 feasibility study reports to assess the impact of sample frequency for comminution test work on project revenue. This disparity in size between assay and comminution data arises because geological and resource-grade risks cannot be managed without extensive geochemical testing, whereas comminution risks are traditionally mitigated through design methods and the use of contingencies. This approach is partly due to the relatively high cost and large sample requirements associated with traditional comminution tests. Our analysis demonstrates that insufficient comminution sampling and testing leads to uncertainties in throughput forecasts, creating significant financial risks. Data from the feasibility studies show that a 1% change in mill throughput can result in up to a 5% variation in Net Present Value (NPV), underscoring the sensitivity of project economics to operational performance. Building on previous work, we reference studies that reveal how low frequency of comminution testing can increase uncertainty in mill throughput forecasts and increase financial risks. We propose an approach that optimises the number of comminution samples tested to enhance forecast accuracy and reduce NPV variance. By adopting this approach, mining projects can improve financial reliability and mitigate risks associated with underperformance in SAG and AG mill-based operations.

In the environmentally conscious social atmosphere today, reclamation in surface mines has become a main issue to the public and the regulatory committees. In response to this increased attention, many regulatory committees have begun to enact more stringent regulations on surface mining operations. Operations across all spectrums of the industry have seen changes. Recently and most visibly the mountain top removal mines have seen several new regulations focusing on environmental protection. Specifically regulatory committees have emphasized a focus on the methods of reclamation and recovery of layers suitable for vegetation. These layers are the most visible once the operation has concluded. Also, these layers have the most human interaction (farming, hunting, and house development). Often times the new regulations enacted are shifting from a performance base to a standards base. The key differentiator being a performance base dictates the final result while a standards base dictates the method to achieve the result. The very nature of many regulations (especially those that are standards based) not only challenges the physical limitations of the equipment used today, they come with a financial impact. For the purpose of this paper, the model will be a surface coal operation, utilizing draglines as primary overburden movers. The coal seam is ten feet thick, the overburden ninety five feet thick, the pits are 150 feet wide, and the dragline is a Bucyrus Erie 1570.

The molecular structure of hydrophobic and hydrophilic groups in nonionic surfactants has been related to the wetting and dispersion of selected pigments. The nonionic surfactants included in this study are acetylenic diol based surfactants and ethoxylated alkyl phenols. The Langmuir model could be used to fit adsorption data. Further analysis of the data showed that the free energy of adsorption was a function of adsorption density of the surfactants at the interface. The change in free energy with adsorption density could be interpreted by considering a change in the orientation of the adsorbed molecules. Acetylenic diol based surfatants were found to have an area per molecule of 2-3 times that of similarly ethoxylated alkyl phenols. The wetting and dispersion properties of lamp black, a model hydrophobic surface, by these surfactants were investigated by contact angle measurements and particle size analysis. Acetylenic diol based surfactants with ethylene oxide contents between3.5 and 10 moles per molecule and alkyl phenol based surfactants with approximately 9 moles of ethylene oxide per molecule were found to provide superior wetting abilities. Longer ethylene oxide chains were required for superior dispersion capabilities within each family of surfactants. Complete wetting and dispersion was found to occur above the critical micelle concentration of the surfactants.

Introduction Democratic countries are founded on the principle that all citizens have the right to participate in policy setting and decision-making processes. Citizen participation is especially evident in environmental issues and policies. In the United States, there are currently over 10,000 environmental organizations and new ones are being formed each year. Many of these organizations are formed on a watershed basis and are particularly concerned about the impact mining has on the environment. While the environmental issues vary from area to area, most concerns center around mining impacts related to subsidence, water pollution, and water diversion. Citizens have a number of avenues for participating in lawmaking that affects the mining industry. Some of these avenues include participation in litigation and citizen ballot initiatives. In addition, there are less formal methods of participation that include attending public meetings, commenting on agency rules or lobbying on specific legislation. The intent of this article is outline the various public participations mechanisms, highlight the latest legal developments that have affected mining industry through citizen participation, and briefly discuss emerging issues.

"The Vietnamese economic growth of more than 5% per year leads this country to an enormous demand for raw materials. In the duration of ongoing expansion, the big challenge in the coming decades will be to make this process as sustainable as possible when it comes to economic, environmental and social objectives. Risk management especially in occupational safety and health (OSH) in enterprises is one of the most important tools to achieve this aim. But until now, this has not been taken into priority by Vietnamese coal mining enterprises. Main reasons for this situation can be found in deficient legislative conditions and in non-synchronized risk management systems. In contrast, Germany has implemented an adequate legal system and the German mining industry has gained lots of experiences in risk management, especially in occupational safety and health. This paper seeks to point out specific challenges how to improve occupational safety and health in Vietnam by transferring and applying German methods and standards."

Introduction The South African Witwatersrand is the world's largest gold-bearing province and gold producing district. But the production capacity of the very big mines (Vaal Reef, Driefontein Cons., Western Holdings, Western Deep Levels, and others) is not as large as that of the Soviet Union's Muruntau gold mine. The Muruntau gold-bearing ore body was discovered in 1956-57, and has been in operation since that time. In the early 1970s, this mine produced 70 to 80 t/a (2.3 to 2.6 million oz per year) of gold. Within the last few years it has become the world's largest producing gold mine. Russian authors do not publish ore reserve or rate of production data. But it is very likely that the Muruntau mining complex, which involves several ore bodies, is currently producing about 143 t/a (4.6 million oz per year) of gold. Comminution is one of the fundamentals of mineral processing, requiring large expenditures to be made on capital equipment, installation, power and maintenance. The trend toward lower grades and higher operating costs, mean mining operations are becoming increasingly marginal. The challenge is to improve and more importantly, utilise crushing and milling technologies that provide for reduced capital and operating costs whilst providing increased unit efficiencies. The Svedala Barmac Autogenous Crushing Mill presents such an opportunity by providing many of the cost savings and production increases required by its ability to produce a finer mill feed size and realise reduced energy consumption. This paper briefly describes the operation of the Svedala Barmac Autogenous Crushing Mill and reviews its benefits towards improving the efficiency of crushing and milling operations.

The effect of molecular weight, charge and the presence of the cations Ca2+, Mg2+and K+ on the adsorption of carboxymethyl cellulose on pure talc obtained from Balmat, New York have been investigated. Higher adsorption densities were obtained in the presence ofCa2+ and Mg2+ ions than with K+ ions and higher ionic strength solutions resulted in higher adsorption densities. Changing the molecular weight did not influence the adsorption however increasing the charge (DS) of the polymers resulted in lower adsorption densities.

Sources of sulfur have varied based on technology and societal needs. It has been mined in its elemental form for centuries. Twentieth century technology brought thermal mining (Frasch, 1894) to the forefront of sulfur extraction. Then, by the 1980s, petroleum processing generated almost 40 percent of the 50 Mt (55million st) of sulfur in all forms (SAF) produced in the world. Metals processing (the reclamation of effluent gas by various means as “sulfur in other forms,” or SOF) followed at 30 percent of all sulfur values produced and then Frasch at 22 percent. Petroleum and gas processing now generate most of the elemental sulfur produced in the world. Single Two Frasch mines remain, one each in Iraq and Poland. Conventional mining of small to insignificant volumes also survives in Russia, Latin America and Indonesia. The volume of “recovered” sulfur (the name commonly given by the industry to hydrocarbon-derived material) generated will increase faster than energy consumption as oil and gas with greater amounts of sulfur are used and environmental restrictions on the sulfur content of the fuel consumed become more stringent.

This paper presents the results of column flotation of a fine feed sample of Florida phosphate. A central composite design is used to study the main and interaction effects of parameters affecting column efficiency. The statistical design is also used to determine the optimum conditions. The results indicate that, depending on the experimental conditions, it is possible to achieve a concentrate of high grade and recovery. A concentration of 15 ppm of non-ionic frother is found to be enough to maximize the recovery at the pH of 9.5.

Introduction Rockfalls occur when rocks or boulders detach from mountains or hills and tumble down. They can pose significant hazards to infrastructure such as highways, buildings, and mine open pits, and they sometimes result in personal injury or death. Prediction of rockfalls is a difficult task. Slopes that are at risk of rockfall have highly variable geometries. The location, mass, and shape of the rocks that might dislodge and fall are uncertain. Moreover, the materials that make up a slope can vary considerably from one section to another. Furthermore, the relevant material properties are usually not well known. Performing probabilistic simulations of rockfalls, combined with proper statistical analyses, has proven to be an effective and acceptable method for dealing with these difficulties [1, 2, 3]. The movements of a falling rock can be classified as freefall, bouncing, sliding, toppling, or rolling. The falling trajectory is controlled mainly by the geometry of the slope, the block shape, and the energy dissipated at each contact of the block with the slope. A rockfall model is evaluated based on its ability to efficiently predict the velocity, frequency, height of bounce, and run-out distance of falling rocks. With this information, the engineer can design remedial measures such as restraining nets and ditches. Most of the existing rockfall simulators are based on particle models that consider the falling rock as an infinitesimal particle with a mass, called the lumped mass or stereomechanical models [1, 2, 3, 4]. Other models involve hybrid methods relying on simplified assumptions. The most common hybrid methods are based on contact searching for the movement of a dimensionless object and incorporate some aspects of rigid body impact for bouncing [5, 6, 7]. There are also some rigid body models in the literature that employ simplified versions of rigid body models [8, 9]. This study applies a more sophisticated rigid body theory based on rigid body impact mechanics (RBIM), which was developed by Stronge [10, 11, 12]. The new theory captures all modes of rigid body movement. Due to the importance of the rock geometry, single impacts of ellipsoidal and prismatic rocks with rectangular cross sections are investigated. The effect of rock slenderness on rebound velocities and energies is also investigated for ellipsoidal rocks. The correspondence between the model parameters and the data from the rockfall literature data will be discussed.

Therefore the Institute of Mining Engineering I from the RWTH AachenUniversity developed indicators and an assessment system for the mineral raw materials industryon operation, company and sector level on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Labour(Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Arbeit, BMWA) and the Federal Institute for Geosciencesand Natural Resources (Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe, BGR).In total 30 indicators were defined and designed to assess the performance of the mineral rawmaterials industry in terms of sustainable development, 10 indicators for each pillar (economical,ecological and social pillar).The following paper describes some of the results focussing on the development of environmentalindicators. These had to be adapted or completely new designed in order to match the specificcharacteristics of the mineral raw materials industry."

The Round Mountain gold mine, located 90 km (55 miles) north of Tonopah, NV began large-scale production in 1977. During 2008 Round Mountain Gold Corp. (RMGC) relocated the primary crusher facility approximately 300 m (1,000 ft) to make room for the next phase of openpit mining activities. This facility was installed in 1988 and used a log-crib retaining wall and dump pocket. RMGC selected Hilfiker Retaining Walls and Collins Engineers, Inc. to provide design and materials for a new 17-m- (56-ft-) high mechanically-stabilized embankment (MSE) wall to support the haul trucks at the new location. The construction contractor was EarthTech West Ltd. of Norwood, CO. An MSE wall with a cast-in-place concrete face was chosen as a durable, yet less expensive alternative to the reinforced concrete dump pocket that was originally designed for the project. The arrangement of the MSE wall is of an unusual configuration to meet a variety of operational and maintenance requirements. This paper outlines the selection process, design and construction of the MSE wall.

In the early 1990’s the British Columbia (Canada) mineral industry frequently discussed the need to participate in, and compromise with, public environmental interests in order to ascertain long-term stability. However, as the decade progressed the mineral industry withdrew from almost all meaningful public participation. As government protected areas policy in the past year has illuminated, there is a continued need for long-term land access stability. This paper historically analyses the public engagement policies of the British Columbian mineral industry while it participated in long-term consensus-based multi-stakeholder land-use planning processes. From this analysis the paper recommends that the mineral industry reengage the public and institute a new working relationship with environmental advocacy groups so as to ensure British Columbia becomes the most sustainable mineral producing jurisdiction in the world.
