Allis Mineral Systems' GRATE-CAR agglomeration/induration/reduction process is currently being operated to process ilmenite at Tinfos Titan & Iron KS in Tyssedal, Norway. In this process, balled ilmenite concentrate is fed to a traveling grate where pellets are dried and preheated, using fully oxidized kiln exhaust gas. Hot preheated, semi-indurated pellets are fed directly to a ported kiln where reduction of the ilmenite's iron oxide fraction occurs in the presence of lump coal. The reduced pellet sand coal char are discharged from the kiln to an indirect rotary drum cooler. Cooled pellets and char are screened and magnetically separated prior to their further processing in a downstream smelting operation. The pellets are melted and the titanium dioxide and iron are separated. Operation commenced in late 1986.

I will talk today about a porphyry copper exploration program now underway in the Amazon jungle in the southeastern part of Ecuador near the border with Peru. The project is unusual for two reasons: first the deposits are of Jurassic age, 153 m.y.o., which is unusually old for porphyry copper deposits and they may be the most significant pre-Tertiary age porphyry deposits known. Second, the district was found only six years ago which makes this the most recent discovery of a totally new porphyry copper district. The new porphyry district, known as the Zamora River Copper Belt, or the Corriente Copper Belt, is a north trending area 50 km long by 10-15 km wide, which is nearly aligned with the axis of the Jurassic age Zamora batholith and with the course of the Zamora river. Gencor in 1994 initiated a regional grassroots gold exploration program based on reconnaissance geologic mapping and geochem sampling which did not find a gold mine, but which identified the San Carlos porphyry copper system in April, 1995. In a later reorganization between Gencore and Billiton the Ecuador project was transferred to Billiton and between the Gencore work and Billiton’s a total of 10 porphyry copper systems were found over the next four years. In the period of 1997 - 1999 Billiton drilled a total of 11,000 meters of wide spaced core holes in the San Carlos, Panantza and Kutukus prospects. In October 1999 Billiton concluded a farm-out, joint venture agreement with Corriente Resources and Lowell Mineral Exploration for additional exploration of the Zamora property. This is funded by Corriente and managed by Lowell Mineral Exploration and a total of 28,000 m of core drilling was completed through August 2001. An immediate result of the Corriente Lowell project was the discovery of potentially commercial ore reserves in two new deposits at Mirador and Warintza. Additional closer spaced drilling was done in the Panantza deposit and additional drilling is planned at San Carlos, in targets related to Warintza, and elsewhere.

"Communities near sand mines and processing facilities in Wisconsin have raised concerns regarding possible exposure to ambient respirable (PM4) crystalline silica. Fenceline PM4 (particulate matter captured with a 50 percent cut size of 4 micrometers aerodynamic diameter) crystalline silica concentration data were compiled at Fairmount Santrol Inc., Mathy Construction Inc. and U.S. Silica facilities. The long-term average PM4 crystalline silica concentrations ranged from 0.05 to 0.45 micrograms/m3 when sample values below the limit of quantification were treated as zeros. All of the long-term average concentrations were less than 20 percent of the Minnesota Department of Health’s and California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment’s PM4 crystalline silica chronic reference exposure level of 3.0 micrograms/m3. The measured concentrations were consistently within the local background concentration range.Air Control Techniques P.C. compiled the sampling data using Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. Partisol 2000i PM2.5 samplers meeting the requirements of 40 CFR Part 50, Appendix L. These samplers were adapted to capture particulate matter with a 50 percent cut size of 4 micrometers. The use of polyvinyl chloride filters allowed for crystalline silica X-ray diffraction analysis by NIOSH Method 7500. The combined use of adjusted PM2.5 filter-based samplers with Method 7500 crystalline silica analyses provided for a highly sensitive limit of quantification of 0.31 micrograms/m3 of PM4 crystalline silica.BackgroundIn 2005, the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA, 2005) adopted a 70-year chronic reference exposure level (REL) for PM4 (particulate matter having aerodynamic diameter of 4 micrometers or less) crystalline silica. The REL was extrapolated from occupational hygiene epidemiological studies, essentially all of which were based on in-plant PM4 crystalline silica measurements. No well-established ambient sampling technique for PM4 crystalline silica was available at the time that OEHHA adopted its REL. The personal samplers used for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Method 0600 in-plant sampling of employee exposure were designed for concentrations higher than ambient levels. The limit of quantification (LOQ) of PM4 crystalline silica on NIOSH 0600 filters was too high for the effective sampling of ambient air."

Tunnel contracts in New York have in recent years had few bidders with the bids received being much higher than anticipated. Since 9/11, security has become a key issue in planning key infrastructure projects in New York. This is especially true in the case of large water supply tunnels. Striking the right balance between cost and security was the major factor in determining the best configurationfor the Kensico-City Tunnel. This paper outlines the efforts made to determine realistic probable bid costs for the tunnel contracts, and the innovative approaches taken to deal with security issues.

In this paper, a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model for the short-term scheduling of open pit mines is formulated. The proposed model aims at sequencing the blocks extraction over multiple short-term periods. The model takes into account multiple processes, waste dumps, and multiple stockpiles. The short-term scheduler makes a decision on the period, destination, and route that ore and waste are supposed to take to minimize costs while meeting all the mining and processing constraints. The destinations of the extracted materials are also controlled by their rock types. A monthly short-term production scheduling case study of an iron ore deposit is carried out over a year to validate the model.

The Davis detector cavern was excavated on the 4850 Level of the former Homestake Mine in the mid- 1960s to house a novel neutrino detector developed by Nobel Prize winner Dr. R. Davis. The original cavern was about 9.1 x 16.8 x 9.7 m high, excavated in a Precambrian amphibolite known as the Yates unit and enlarged in 2010. In 2009, the National Science Foundation selected the site for development as a national Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL). This retrospective rock mechanics study of the Davis cavern is intended to inform design of the much larger caverns and laboratory rooms being considered for the same 4850 Level. Provision for rock mass variability, sequential excavation, jointing and wall damage from blasting are included in analyses that were done using two different computer codes and methods (FLAC3D and UTAH3). The results are in agreement with observations and show that cavern stability is indeed the case. The main conclusions are: (1) if conventional scaling of laboratory rock elastic moduli and strengths is done, then 0.25 and 0.50 scale factors are reasonable, (2) measured statistical and spatial variability in rock properties should be incorporated into geomechanical analyses to better reflect reality, (3) discontinuities (“joints”) are essential to reliable analysis of excavation safety and when properly taken into account eliminate the need for empirical “scaling” of laboratory rock properties, (4) major geologic features such as rhyolite dikes and breccia zones may be important to excavation safety at Homestake and should be explicitly represented in analyses and (5) quantifying wall blast damage is important to engineering design of underground excavations.

The Butte quartz monzonite is the host rock for early porphyry copper style mineralization and subsequent mesothermal-epithermal, enargite-gold style veining that transects the district. The east-west Anaconda system veins sustained mining for over a century. They include the Emma, Anaconda-Original, Syndicate, Badger-State and Alice-Rainbow veins, each with strike lengths of more than 3,660-m (12,000-ft) and vertical continuity in excess of 1,370-m (4,500-ft) with mining widths from 1.5- to 15-m (5- to 50-ft). These characteristics are unique to Butte. The incredible dimensions and tenor of these veins have yet to be surpassed and Butte is still touted as being the “Richest Hill on Earth.” The Anaconda Company was formed in 1895 to develop underground copper reserves in the district. It eventually consolidated all operations under one company. Production from underground mining continued through the mid-1970s. Openpit mining in the Berkeley pit began in 1955 with the extraction of supergene ores, along with the remnants of deeper horsetail zones inaccessible to the underground mines.

The purpose of this project is to convey sanitary sewage from an existing pump station to a new waste water treatment plant. This paper will discuss the design and construction aspects of the project. The scope includes construction of three main shafts ranging from 34 to 100 feet in diameter at depths of 200 to 230 feet and 21,000feet of tunnel. Shaft construction consisted of slurry wall excavations keyed into claystone and limestone at depths ranging from 114 to 130 feet, followed by rock excavation utilizing drill and blast methods. The tunnel is being excavated in the Warsaw and Salem shale and limestone formations utilizing a 12'-6" diameter Wirth hard rock TBM.

Scattered north and south along a 161-km (100-mile) stretch of Interstate 80, Newmont Min¬ing Corp. owns four active mining properties in Nevada?s northern high desert ? Carlin Trend Operations, Midas, Twin Creeks and Phoenix. Among the four, there are nine openpits, five underground mines and 14 processing facilities. While gold is the predominant ore, silver and copper are also produced. And in a move to hold down energy costs, Newmont built and owns the 200-MW (net), coal-fired TS power plant. This plant provides about 65 percent of the power used for Newmont?s own operations, while the rest is sold to NV Energy, which services Nevada and northeastern California. Bringing the Phoenix Mine ? Newmont?s newest in Nevada ? on-line presented many developmental and operational challenges. Located about 19 km (12 miles) southwest of the town of Battle Mountain, the general area had been home to prospectors and other mining companies since the 1860s. But any profitability in developing the lower grade gold, copper and silver deposit at Phoenix proved elusive, with Battle Mountain Gold being the last company to make an attempt. When Newmont acquired Battle Mountain Gold and its Phoenix reserves in 2001, the lower grade of ore was not a deterrent. Newmont found Nevada-wide cost savings synergies for maximizing profit during the depressed gold market of the late 1990s. The new property was aptly renamed the Phoenix Mine, a nod to its rising from the ashes of the dreams and efforts of previous mine owners.

Filtration of fine particles involves filter cake formation and removal of surface moisture by drawing air through the porous structure. Accurate assessment of the transport properties of porous media (in this case, filter cake) is of major importance in the development of improved filtration processes. Implications from these studies are important in the design and operation of filtration equipment in order to enhance the efficiency of this important solid-liquid separation process. The microstructure and connectivity of pore space are important features necessary to describe detailed fluid flow phenomena in filter cake during fine particle filtration. In this regard, 3D characterization of pore structure is essential. The pore structure has to be described by parameters which are of special relevance to the interpretation of fluid transport phenomena. These parameters should be based on directly measured variables of the pore system and not inferred from indirect variables (such as those determined empirically from transport processes) valid only for a particular pore structure. In this way fundamental relationships between pore structure and fluid transport at the microstructure level can be described. In order to achieve this level of sophistication the three-dimensional interconnected pore structure of filter cake must be determined. Study of fluid transport phenomena in filter cake using x-ray microtomography to characterize the complex three-dimensional pore geometry is discussed. On this basis the Lattice-Boltzmann (LB) method is used to simulate and to establish a fundamental relationship between pore microstructure and effective transport coefficients.

The Project alignment initiates north of Pinerolo, along the State Road 23[S.S. 23] that is one of the principal arteries to the northwestern Alps where a number of Olympic events for the 2006 Winter Games will be held. The 3.5 km ring road bypasses the Porte habitat by traversing twice the Chisone River. It consists of the following principal structures [Figure 1]: San Martino bridge [130 m in four bays] Prarostino viaduct [130 m in four bays] Craviale tunnel [1055 m] Turinella bridge [a 50 m long bridge that connects the two tunnels] Turina tunnel [665 m] Malanaggio viaduct [350 m in 9 bays]. The road section is 13 m wide and is made up of two 3.75 m lanes, a hard shoulder [1.50 m wide] and a 1.25 m wide curb for each lane. The Project maximum velocity is 100 km/h.

Cable shovels are used for primary excavation in in-situ and/or pre-fragmented formations in surface mining operations. Poorly fragmented hard rock formations and random occurrence of hard boulders in soft formations cause extreme variability of material diggability, resulting in varying shovel stress loading. The stress loading of a shovel’s front-end assembly could result in fatigue failure. Conventional design process, which uses physical shovel simulation studies, is very costly and time consuming for achieving statistically significant results. In this paper, rigid and flexible multi-body dynamic theories are used to develop component stress loading and deformation models of the cable shovel, and solved in the ADAMS/NASTRAN/FLEX environments. Detailed simulation experiments are carried out to examine the performance, reliability, durability and efficiency of the P&H 4100A under varying in-situ formation conditions. The results show areas of high stress fields with a maximum stress of 313.31 MPa at node 441 within the hoist rope. The reliability of the results is confirmed by comparing existing test data. The study is significant because it provides a solid foundation for further study of failure life analysis of the cable shovel components.

Globalization was the key word for the mining industry during the 1990s, just as productivity was the key word of the 1980s. And globalization will remain the key word as the industry enters the 21st century, according to speakers at the Colorado MPD Meeting held in Colorado Springs, CO in May. The meeting, put on by the Colorado Section SME Minerals Processing Division, drew about 120 people to the Broadmoor Hotel. “Operating Globally” was the theme of the 49th annual conference. Speakers addressed the reasons why mining companies have limited their spending in the United States and have moved into Third World and developing nations.

Within the metal/nonmetal mining sector, fall-related incidents account for a large proportion of fatal and non-fatal injuries. However, the events and contributing factors leading up to these incidents have not been fully investigated. To help provide a clearer picture of these factors, an analysis of imminent danger orders issued by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) between 2010 and 2017 at both surface and underground metal/nonmetal mine sites revealed that most orders are associated with fall risks. Of these cases, 84% involved the workers not using fall protection, fall protection not being provided, or the improper use of fall protection. Fall risks for workers most frequently occurred when standing on mobile equipment, performing maintenance and repairs on plant equipment, or working near highwalls. In most cases, a single, basic, corrective action (e.g., using fall protection) would have allowed workers to perform the task safely. Overall, these findings suggest that a systematic approach is needed to identify, eliminate, and prevent imminent danger situations. Furthermore, to protect mineworkers from falls from height, frequently performed tasks requiring fall protection should be redesigned to eliminate the reliance on personal fall protection.

"How Wall Street Darling Molycorp Undermined the U.S. Economy, Degraded our National Security and Distorted the Global Economic Balance and How These Falsehoods Continue to be Promoted Even Today INTRODUCTION & SUMMARY In 2007 the Molycorp Mountain Pass rare earth mine was resurrected from its desert-grave in California by its then-owner Chevron Mining. Responding to elevated rare earth prices Chevron began processing on-site rare earth concentrates left over from past mining operations that were terminated in 1998i. Chinese demand had sparked what was being described as a commodities super-cycleii. Commodity prices were on the move. Wall Street smelled opportunity. In 2008 Goldman Sachs, Pegasus Partners, Resource Capital Funds, Traxys North America LLC and Carint Group LLC acquired the mining assets from Chevron. In an environment of ever-declining ethical standards and regulatory consequences the private capital group and their investment bankers would bring Molycorp to market. Molycorp, with its high powered investment banking team of Morgan Stanley and J.P. Morganiii, easily dominated the contest. Molycorp promoted itself, largely based on its past operating history and proven reserves, as the best company to challenge China’s monopoly control over the production of rare earths: a group of elements critical to most advanced technologies and U.S. defense systemsiv. Most of Wall Street’s hottest investment sectors were dependent on these materials: alternative energy, green technologies, computing, personal communications, advanced electronics and defense systems. By late 2010 there were dozens of prospective rare earth start-up ‘mining companies’ seeking capital. Eventually the number of prospective rare earth mining companies seeking capital exceeded 400, despite the reality that supply requirements of this market were disproportionally small when compared to other natural resource sectorsv. In the world of finance ‘smart money’ picks the winners. Consequently just twovi projects attracted nearly all of the capital (Molycorp and Lynas). Wall street picked Molycorpvii. This paper will primarily focus on Molycorp. By early 2010 the words “Molycorp” and “Rare Earths” electrified many people in the mining industry, most non-Chinese manufacturing technology companies, U.S. & allied defense contractors, technocrats in the U.S. national security community and eager investors across most of the world’s stock markets. It was the hottest story of the yearviii. The financial, technology and defense press coverage verged on euphoric: heaping fuel on fuel until the highly combustible Molycorp-pyre cast a long shadow over all of its rivalsix. When the IPO match was lit the spectacular flaming pyre sucked all of the oxygen out of the rare earth spacex. Molycorp was ranked the most lucrative IPO of 2010, resulting in record breaking profits to its private investors and massive returns for its early stock holding investors."

The copper mines of Michigan are all in the northern part of that state on the Keweenaw Peninsula, which extends from the (Michigan) mainland for about seventy miles northeasterly toward the middle of Lake Superior. The mines occur in a belt or zone occupying the central portion of the peninsula from end to end.. The most productive mines for many years past have been those located not far from the city of Houghton in' the central part of the zone, in a section extending about ten miles southwest of Houghton and fifteen miles northeast. The most important mines in order of location, from the northeast to south¬west, are the following: Mohawk, Ahmeek, Allouez, North Kearsarge, Wolverine, South Kearsarge, Centennial, Calumet. and Hecla, Osceola, Franklin, Quincy, Hancock, Isle Royale, Superior, Baltic, Trimountain, and Champion. The first three named are in Keweenaw county and all of the others are in Houghton county. Still farther to the southwest are the Lake, Mass, Adventure, Michigan, Victoria, and White Pine mines. These are in Ontonagon county.History. The exploitation of these copper mines extends back into prehistoric times. There is little evidence that the American Indians carried on mining operations in this region in the period shortly before the advent of white men, but there is abundant evidence that the ancestors of the Indians, •or some earlier inhabitants of the region, carried on primitive mining operations. For example, Mr. S. O. Knapp, Agent of the Minne¬sota Mining Company, in the winter of 1847-48, made the first discovery of prehistoric mining. Compared to conventional fully ducted axial and centrifugal fan systems, jet fans can offer a number of advantages for control of smoke during fire emergencies and dilution of diesel engine exhaust products in vehicular and rail tunnels. The success of jet fan applications is the result of a balance between the temperature de-rating of the fan, buoyancy forces and the installation momentum transfer efficiency. This paper provides a case study of a unique application of vertically-mounted jet fans in ventilation shafts used to provide both emergency ventilation and pollution control for an overbuild created by the construction of a series of commercial high-rise residential buildings over a portion of an existing passenger rail line. A detailed evaluation of a set of shafts for one building is presented, including a discussion of the calculation methods used to estimate the required jet fan capacity and the results of the subsequent numerical analysis using Computational Fluid Dynamics to simulate the performance of the jet fans during train car fire emergencies.

Traditional loading systems have relied for many years on wheel and track loaders, power shovels, conveyor belts, and more recently, hydraulic front shovels. Each has certain advantages and disadvantages, depending largely on job conditions. Hydraulic backhoes were introduced several years ago as still another truck loading option. At first, buckets were small and backhoe use was limited to small earthmoving projects. Now, as backhoes are equipped with shorter sticks and bigger buckets to move larger quantities of earth. The "mass excavation" concept offers an excellent truck loading option in many situations. System Development and Advantages Mass excavation was first used successfully by contractors in site development and highway construction, loading both on-highway and off-highway trucks. Operators were able to take advantage of the excavator's ability to work in poor underfoot conditions and dig in tough materials. The technique was first applied to mining in the kaolin mines of central Georgia. Kaolin, one of the world's most abundant minerals, is used to make paper, paint, ceramics, rubber, plastics, and many other products. Since kaolin clay is slippery when wet, load-out with wheel loaders is very inefficient. Also, kaolin is found in very spotty deposits due to the weathering process involved in its formation. Consequently, draglines are also impractical for kaolin mining since they don't have the mobility to move between clay deposits. In response to these mining conditions and kaolin characteristics, mines began using excavators in mass excavation as early as 1976. They have developed a system that takes advantage of the excavator's •high penetration and breakout force in tight materials; •fast-cycling hydraulics; •ability to work in poor underfoot conditions; and •mobility in comparison to draglines. This loading method has been successful in Georgia's kaolin mines and now can be applied to other mining operations as well. Improving the accuracy of the performance prediction models for hard rock Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) is important in estimation of the schedule and cost of tunnelling in related projects. The effects of rock mass on performance of TBMs has been studied extensively, yet due to the complex nature of the process, impact of many parameters influencing machine advance rate are not very clear and there is still room for improvements. More accurate estimates can be obtained by better understanding of operating parameters in various geological conditions and can lead to matching machine specifications with job conditions, optimizing machine performance, and avoiding long delays and downtime for increased productivity. This paper will offer review of two case histories including Queens Water tunnel in New York and KCRC project in Hong Kong. The analysis of the available field data, including the geological back mapping and results of laboratory testing of rock mechanical properties, machine operational parameters and achieved rate of penetration will be presented. This includes statistical analysis of available field data to provide a better understanding of the influence of rock mass properties on performance of hard rock TBMs as well as related formulas to improve performance estimates.
