Historically, linear and lognormal krigings were first created to estimate the in situ mineral resources of blocks. Nonlinear geostatistics and indicator kriging were subsequently developed to evaluate also the portion recovered when applying a cut-off on selective mining units (SMUs) within blocks. In practice these methods are generally based either on the Gaussian model with a transformation generalizing the lognormal case or on the indicators above cut-offs. Very often the indicator approach is simplified by kriging separately each indicator, and when starting from a continuous variable, a practical advantage of the discretization into classes lies in the easy treatment of a zero effect and of the high values. However, a number of so-called isofactorial models have also been developed for a discrete or continuous variable, where the full cokriging of indicators (i.e. disjunctive kriging) simplifies to the separate kriging of factors. Moreover, these models are equipped with a change of support, allowing a consistent estimation of recoverable resources on SMUs. Min-Max Autocorrelation Factors (MAF) analysis of the indicators offers a new approach for indicator modelling. In particular the first factor, the one with the highest spatial continuity, can help in choosing the type of model. For example a monotonic experimental first factor can be used directly as the basis of a discrete diffusion model, unless a continuous diffusion model such as the Gaussian model can be used on the original variable. This approach is illustrated on a uranium deposit mined selectively: estimates of recoverable resources by discrete disjunctive kriging and uniform conditioning in a Gaussian model are compared locally to short-term estimates based on two areas densely drilled.

"SynopsisOver the last decade in South Africa, there has been a significant increase in the number of mining operations, both open pit and underground, which use independent contractors to carry out mining activities. Often mine owners will choose the contractor option without fully understanding the consequences of undertaking this option. Traditionally, contract mining has come at a cost premium of about 15% to 20% compared to an owner mining scenario. However, due to the large number of junior mining companies entering the mining arena in South Africa contract mining rates have increased, with cost premiums as high as 50% being reported. This paper looks at the merits of owner mining versus contract mining and describes under what conditions it may be favourable to select the one option over the other. In addition, the methodology of entering into contract negotiations with the objective of establishing a fair and sustainable relationship is discussed.IntroductionOver the last decade in South Africa, there has been a significant increase in the number of mining operations, both open pit and underground, which use independent contractors to carry out mining activities. Surface mining, for example, may use contractors to conduct drilling and blasting operations or load and haul operations. Common surface operations such as mineral beneficiation, waste disposal, security, and product transport may also be outsourced to contractors.Many companies have a business model that utilizes contractors for the entire mining cycle, maintaining a small head office to provide direction and control. The difficulty with this option is that often mining companies will choose the contractor option without fully understanding the implications."

During mining, the stress in the coal face varies, and, at the same time, the gas flows from the coal body into the excavation, which will cause the gas pressure to change continuously. Assuming the coal gas content of the coal to be constant, and applying the law of energy conservation, the influence of stress concentration on the gas pressure was analysed. It was found that the stress is proportional to the gas pressure. Finally, as a result of analysis and the law of gas flow, the gas pressure dynamic distribution ahead of tunnelling was modelled, and the mechanism by which blasting induces outburst was explained by making use of the model. The role of the electric arc in the consumption of electrodes in submerged arc furnaces has long been debated. The hostile environment in the furnace does not make direct measurement feasible, so simulation has been used to evaluate the arcs contribution to the erosion. Magnetofluiddynamic (MFD) electric arc simulations and a cathode / anode sub-model developed in order to provide boundary condition to the arc model have been used for this purpose. The cathode / anode sub-model provides current distributions and cathode / anode fall voltages for the arc and temperature distribution for the electrode surface, which is paramount to the erosion rate which in turn is calculated from the Clausius Clapeyron equation and the Hertz Knudsen formula for the vapour transport. In the case of high-current industrial AC arcs, arc currents are typically ~100 kA, phase voltages ~100 V and total furnace power ~10 ? 60 MW. The results show that although enormous amounts of material is evaporated, much of it recondenses on the surface. Furthermore the results show that the arc erosion increases strongly with the arc current. If a single arc is present its contribution to erosion is close to the actual total erosion in the furnace. Results from this analysis indicate that there are possibly more than one arc present in the crater, in which case less than 40% of the total erosion would be due to the arc, the rest is chemical erosion.

A voluntary comprehensive environmental Risk Assessment was launched at the end of 2004 by the International Chromium Development Association. The completion is scheduled for mid 2006.EURAS, a leading environmental consultancy, was commissioned for this project, as this firm wrote in particular the Metals Environmental Risk Assessment Guidelines, the reference document for the metals and metals compounds, in particular for the forthcoming European new Chemical Policy and the Globally Harmonized System for the Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). This project follows a stepwise approach, comprising 3 distinct steps: - Initial Risk Assessment: compilation, evaluation of the existing effects and exposure data for chromium III compounds and chromium metal. This information will be used for the compilation of an initial Risk Assessment Report. - Data gap analysis: which type of additional effects data should be collected and/or which exposure scenarios merit a more detailed targeted risk assessment? Recommendations and/or suggestions for further research will be formulated. - Road map: prioritization and ranking of the different proposed research programs. The presentation will mainly focus on the results and recommendations of the initial environmental Risk Assessment from an International perspective and not from an European point of view. - Hazard assessment ? definition of the Predicted Non effect Concentration (PNEC) for each environmental compartment (water, sediment, soil) - Exposure assessment ? definition of the Predicted Environmental Concentrations (PEC) for each environ-mental compartment - Comparison of the local PEC with PNEC for the chromium III compounds and chromium metal EU industry sectors covered in the project: mining of chromite, metallurgical production of chromium metal, chromium containing alloys production, production of trivalent chromium chemicals and the main applications (pigments, leather tanning, etc..). The current status on the environmental Classification and Ranking for chromium III compounds, Chromium metal and its alloys in the GHS will also be covered.

The kinetics of copper cementation during atmosphere leaching of a Ni-Cu matte in CuSO4-H2SO4 solution was studied as a function of initial copper ion concentration, initial acid concentration, temperature, stirring rate, particle size distribution and pulp density. It was found that all these process variables influenced the rate of cementation. A two-stage rate of reaction was observed inmost of the experiments, with the rate of cementation in the initial stage being slower than that of the subsequent second stage. The increased rate of cementation in the second stage was attributed to the enhancing effect of the surface deposit. The cementation process was found to take place by two different rate-controlling mechanisms. At a temperature range of 50?70°C, an activation energy of 74.6 kJ/mol was obtained, indicating a surface reaction controlled process. At higher temperatures (70?80°C) a lower value of activation energy was observed (18.2 kJ/mol), indicative of a process controlled by diffusion through surface layers. The structural characteristics of the cemented deposit could not be determined in the investigated system where the deposit was mixed with the leach solid residue.

The purpose of this paper is to explore the application of technology to stoping systems. Technology, because for the past 100 years the South African narrow reef mining industry has battled to control working costs in a labour-intensive industry. Stoping systems, because it is the stoping method and methodology which is at the heart of the mining system. Introduce a more efficient stoping system and the mining system will look after itself. The technology applied to stoping over the past 100 years can be categorized as follows: ?The introduction of pneumatic rockdrills early this century, the cumbersome rig mounted units being replaced by smaller, lighter hand-held units which were then made easier to use with the addition of an air leg ?Scraper winches to replace gravity and shovels to move rock both in the face and the gullies were first introduced in the late 1920s ?Hydraulic props as a support method arrived in the1960s ?Some people argue that tungsten carbide inserts were equally important. There have been a number of attempts to introduce different technologies into stoping, the most recent being trackless equipment. Where the stoping layout suits the technology it has been successful. There have been too many instances where a technology has been installed because it is fashionable. At the end of the day the outcome from change in the stoping systems has to be safer and more profitable mining systems. It is the contention of the author that change is only likely to be effective if it is supported by the introduction and application of appropriate technology.

Bateman, like other engineering contractors, carries out or participates in many studies of potential projects in the Minerals Industry. This paper aims to explain the contracting approach to feasibility studies as practiced by Bateman, particularly where this differs from a traditional mining company approach. A brief description is provided of the usual phases of a project and the types of estimate needed to proceed from one phase to the next. Possible organizational structures involving different forms of association between owner, contractor and consultants are then outlined. The bulk of the paper then demonstrates that the cost estimates prepared stem directly from the mining plan, metallurgical process design and engineering design philosophy. The steps to be followed in order to prepare a credible estimate which accurately reflects the design constraints are described. The importance and the methodology of carrying out value engineering and of preparing contingency estimates based on a thorough risk analysis exercise are then discussed. Financial modelling techniques are described briefly. The paper concludes with short summary case studies of two recent investigations of potential projects in Africa.

Slat-band chains, currently manufactured from Type 430 ferritic stainless steel, are used as conveyors in various industries. A process to strengthen these chains?with the aim of prolonging the lifetime of the conveyors?was developed recently. The process entails heat treating the cold-worked chain at 475°C,strengthening the material by precipitation of the Cr-rich phase a? at relatively long periods of aging. In the present work, it was found that increasing the interstitial content by solution heat treatments (at 880°C or 930°C) prior to cold rolling and aging, causes an increase in strength at shorter aging times as a result of the precipitation of chromium-rich carbides and nitrides. The solution treatments can introduce martensite into the microstructure if carried out at a sufficiently high temperature. This, along with the deformation caused by cold work, also increases the strength. Corrosion resistance is not affected by the treatments, but ductility is lowered. However, calculated critical crack lengths indicate that solution treatment at a temperature below the Ac1allows for a larger critical flaw size, and that the lifetime of the chains will probably be determined by fatigue. Although the duration of the service of the chains are reportedly controlled by wear, with these treatments the tensile strength of the material is increased to within acceptable limits for conveyor chains. The tensile strength is an indication of the wear or abrasion resistance of a material. It is expected that after the treatments, the wear resistance will be improved, but since embrittlement occurs, the fatigue resistance is lowered. It is concluded that the preferred processing route for the chains would be solution treatment at 880°C, fast quenching to trap the interstitial atoms, cold rolling and then aging at 475°C for 8 minutes.

The management of the Anglo Platinum (AP) mining technical systems (MTS) embarked upon a process of defining the strategy for the MTS department. The newly established department forms part of the greater Group Information Technology (IT). The strategic process took place within an environment that had witnessed a dramatic proliferation of IT implementations across the group within the last three years. The IT department has been structured in terms of the classical plan, build and run functions with the applications and integration streams running perpendicular across these three functions. The application stream is divided into commercial and mining technical systems with business systems integration the third stream. The mining technical systems department supports mine management to effectively gather, analyse and disseminate data relating to the ore reserve by integrating a number of strategically selected IT applications to ensure that the safety, legal and operational requirements are met. This service to business is rendered by management of a strategic outsource partner via tightly controlled service level agreements (SLAs). The framework used for creating a mining technical systems department that is empowered to add value to business was formulated using the AP value chain as both the starting point and guiding process to ensure alignment to the greater internal strategy of the business. Outsourcing? and ?sub-contracting? have become buzzwords in recent years, as SA industry becomes increasingly exposed to the global economy, and global competitiveness. In its effort to ?catch up? after years of relative isolation, there is a concerted effort to learn from global ?best practice?, in order for South African companies, and the SA economy, to become ?winners?. There seems nothing wrong with this approach at face value. Companies need to compete and be profitable if they are to remain in business. Failure will in the end mean bankruptcy, and the loss of jobs. However, if one interrogates the precise practices, and their implications for all concerned?not just shareholders and employers, but workers, communities, the environment, future generations, the national economy?then the picture can change dramatically. ?Best practice? for whom?

Mintek has been involved in the development of bioleach technology for many years, initially for refractory gold extraction, and more recently also for base metals extraction. Mintek, in collaboration with its Australian technology partner (BacTech), is the technology provider for the Beaconsfield refractory gold bioleach plant. At present Mintek, BacTech and Peñoles are constructing a demonstration bioleach plant for copper-zinc concentrate treatment. Bioleach liquors produced in all applications have to be neutralized. In the copper-zinc case, neutralization is required for bleeding iron from the circuit and for adjusting the pH value ahead of solvent extraction. In the refractory gold bioleach circuit, neutralization is required for producing a stable iron-arsenic residue. Some of the challenges encountered in each of these neutralization applications are discussed, and examples of results obtained are presented.

The paper reviews the results to date of an integrated research programme currently being conducted by CSIR Mining Technology, aimed at impacting significantly on concentrated mining with face advance rates of up to 20 times faster than presently achieved. Consideration is given to the interplay between innovative technologies for continuous non-explosive mining or rock comminution underground and lateral hydraulic transportation in cross cuts, haulages and eventually hydro hoisting. Novel technologies for underground comminution of reef and development waste and an innovative pumping system suitable for the hydraulic transportation of coarse comminuted rock are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on South African gold mine reef and waste samples comminuted by electric shock wave comminution technology. The innovative TORE® pump system appears to be well suited for the successful hydraulic transportation of rock, produced by electric shock wave comminution, at solids concentrations between 45 % and 67 % by mass.

This is my second visit to South Africa, and I am struck by the similarities between our countries. This extends to the professional issues associated with engineering and competencies in particular. I propose to outline two exciting stories today. ? Development of competency standards for professional engineers in Australia. ? Development of a management programme which has assisted professional engineers regain positions of leadership in Australian industry and government. First of all I would like to outline the Association of Professional Engineers, Scientists and Managers, Australia(APESMA).

Although many investigations of the deformation behaviour of rocks have been carried out, most of them are carried out in compression. In all rock engineering practice it is usually assumed that the deformation of rocks in tension is the same as that in compression. However, data from numerous researchers have shown that this assumption is not correct for some rocks. A new loading frame for testing rocks in compression and direct tension has recently been developed by the authors, with the capacity to conduct both compression and tensile tests on the same rock sample. The results obtained show that the ratios between the average Young?s modulus in compression (ECA) and in direct tension (ETA) are 1, 1.16, 2 and 6 respectively in four rock types tested. For Poisson?s ratios, analogous relations were obtained. It was observed that, in all cases, the tangent Young?s modulus intension reduces with an increase in the applied tensile stress, while the behaviour of Poisson?s ratio is similar, but shows greater variability. The difference between the Young?s modulus of rocks in tension and that in compression could lead, large errors in calculating induced stresses around underground openings, as well as in determining the Brazilian tensile strength of rocks. This may have a significant influence in rock engineering and therefore more investigation is necessary into the tensile deformation behaviour of rocks and its influence.

The traditional energy consumption criteria are now enhanced with new criteria derived from the mechanical dynamics of the mill load. This new approach demands instrumentation capable of providing accurate information about the load movement and the ratio of balls and ore inside the mill. This paper discusses two new performance enhancing tools available to meet these needs.

The bioleaching of arsenopyrite, the oxidation of arsenate and the precipitation of ferric arsenate are competing reactions, hence their rates depend on the relative concentrations of the respective species, and the activity of the bacterial culture. Bacterial arsenic resistance may be attributed to the Pst+Pit-mutation and an energy dependent efflux pump. Pst+Pit-mutations result in a reduced uptake of arsenate. This enables the bacteria to survive in solutions in which the arsenate concentration is significantly higher than the arsenite concentration. However, the excretion of arsenate requires energy. Therefore, in the absence of an energy source or during periods of reduced bacterial activity, the inhibitory effect of arsenate may manifest at concentrations to which the culture has been adapted. The chemical ferric leaching rate of pyrite and arsenopyrite decrease with a decrease in the solution redox and may be described using a modified Butler-Volmer equation. The bacterial ferrous-iron oxidation kinetics of L. ferrooxidans also depend on the redox potential, and can be described using a Michaelis-Mententype model modified to account for both temperature and pH. A model developed using the independently determined ferric leaching, and ferrous-iron oxidizing kinetics, has been shown to compare well with the experimental data for the continuous bioleaching of pyrite. This paper reports hardness and abrasive wear resistance test results from a wide range of WC-Co alloys, varying in cobalt content as well as WC grain size. The results show that the abrasive wear resistance increases with increasing hardness and that the rate of increase is higher for larger WC grain sizes. The increase in abrasive wear resistance was found to be parabolic up to a critical hardness value and exponential above that value. The transition from parabolic to exponential behaviour was found to occur at the same contiguity value for all grain sizes, which suggests that at that contiguity value the WC skeleton becomes continuous in all WC-Co alloys.
