SYNOPSIS Bad eyesight and poor illumination can contribute to the occurrence of accidents in mines. As one part of a study of this problem, surveys of light intensities have been conducted in 19 gold mines. On 17 of the mines the surveys were on one underground level only, whilst in two of the mines more intensive surveys were conducted by measuring light intensities in all areas to determine any inter-mine variations between the levels of illumination. Readings of light intensity were taken underground at stations, tips, winches, stopes, conveyor belts, waiting places, pump stations, fitters' and boilermakers' workshops, ambulance rooms and in haulages. It is concluded that the average levels of illumination in South African gold mines are comparable with those reported in the literature for mines elsewhere. Standardisation of lighting conditions underground could eliminate inter- and intra-mine variation in illumination levels where they occur. A guide to mine illumination practice would assist such standardisation, and help increase the levels and effectiveness of illumination in mines. Some suggestions are made in this latter connection.

The lift system is the main part in manganese nodule mining on the ocean bed. It connects the nodule collection system (miner) with the surface platform (mining vessel) and transports the nodules from the ocean bed to the surface. China started the research on lift technology in deep ocean mining in 1991, and a slurry pump hydraulic lift method has been developed for the nodule mining system. The detailed slurry pump hydraulic lift experiments have been undertaken with crushed nodules in the vertical pipe. The lift parameters to lift coarse particles in the lift pipeline have been discussed, including the pressure drop, the solid concentration, and the mixture velocity. The author of this paper not only took part in all these studies on the lifting technology, but was also responsible for some of this research. This paper will present the component parts of the lift system and the research results of coarse particle mixture flow in the vertical lift pipeline. Crankshaft driven piston and piston diaphragm pumps inherently generate a varying flow each crankshaft revolution. Depending on the system connected, this flow variation results in a pressure pulsation. This pressure pulsation may, depending on the structural design, result in structural vibrations. In order to limit the level of pressure pulsations, volume absorbing devices, mostly gas filled vessels, are used. The standard selection of these so-called dampeners is based on the flow variation of the pump but does not incorporate the interaction with the connected system. The paper discusses the application of a pulsation analysis tool developed by WEIR Minerals Netherlands, manufacturer of GEHO positive displacement slurry pumps. The paper first discusses the basics of pressure pulsation analysis, such as flow variation generated by crankshaft driven pumps, and hydraulic effects such as capacitance, inductance and resistance and their influence on the hydraulic response of a system. Furthermore, the relation between pressure pulsations and structural vibrations, known as fluid structure interaction, will be discussed. Additionally, the capabilities of the pump pulsation analysis tool are presented, illustrated by examples of simulation results and experimental verification.

This paper captures the essential steps employed in developing Outotec?s new FloatForceTM mechanism. The development of a flotation mechanism essentially revolves around the efficient transfer of installed power, or capital cost, to optimum flotation performance. Optimum flotation performance will be achieved if a balance between metallurgical results, operating and capital costs is maintained. The development of the FloatForceTM mechanism was done by careful evaluation of each of these three areas. This paper focuses on how experience, CFD and laboratory equipment, pilot and plant tests are used to test and evaluate a new flotation mechanism. Validated variables include mixing profile, power draw and local air hold-up. Metallurgical and mechanical design considerations are not covered in this paper. Besides using the FloatForceTM mechanism in new flotation equipment, the FloatForceTM mechanism can be used in existing flotation cell installations, thus enabling improvements in the mixing profiles, solids suspension and metallurgical performance of operating flotation circuits. Results of several tests carried out in existing plant operations are presented.

We report on further progress in improving seismic locations by using the so-called double-difference method (Spottiswoode and Milev, 1998 and Waldhauser et al., 1999). Double-differences are obtained either using picked arrival times or various measures of time differences obtained from waveform pairs. The double-difference method provides for much improved relative locations by reducing the effect of the errors in the wave velocity of ray paths between each event and each geophone. Further improvements are obtained by using known locations, such as blasts. One of the difficult problems that we have overcome is that of finding the best “weights” for the time corrections. Experience obtained in relative moment tensor inversions by Andersen (2001) suggests that use of median corrections is both more stable and more accurate, even while the locations of the individual events is based on weighted least-squares minimization. A hybrid location program with known reference events has been developed. Tests on a synthetic data set gave relative locations that were much less widely spread than the absolute locations. The use of known event coordinates (blasts) moved the relative locations back towards the real locations. These results are confirmed in preliminary analysis of data from a mine. The absolute locations are adjusted using blast events restricted to the line of tunnel development. Inter-event distances are distributed in a power-law fashion that suggests that the relative location accuracies are improved by a factor of three or more. Nous rendons compte des progrès faits dans l’amélioration des locations de séismes en utilisant la méthode appelée de double- différence (Spottiswoode and Milev, 1998 et Waldhauser et al., 1999). On obtient les double-différences soit en utilisant des temps d’arrivée choisis soit des mesures variées de différences de temps obtenues de doublets de forme d’onde. La méthode de double-différence fournit des locations relatives très améliorées en réduisant l’effet des erreurs dans la vitesse d’onde des trajectoires de rayon entre chaque évènement et chaque géophone. D’autres améliorations sont obtenues en utilisant des locations connues, telles que les coups de mine. Un des problèmes difficiles que nous avons surmontés est celui de trouver les meilleurs coefficients de pondération pour les corrections de temps. L’expérience obtenue dans des inversions de phases tensorielles relatives par Andersen (2001) suggère que l’utilisation de corrections médianes est à la fois plus stable et plus exacte, même lorsque la location des évènements individuels est basée sur minimisation pondérée de moindres carrés. Nous avons développé un programme hybride de location avec des évènements connus pour référence. Des tests sur des données artificielles ont donné des locations relatives qui étaient beaucoup moins étendues que les locations absolues. L’utilisation de coordonnées d’évènements connus (coups de mine) a ramené les locations relatives vers les locations réelles. L’analyse préliminaire des données d’une mine a confirmé ces résultats. Les locations absolues sont ajustées en utilisant des évènements de coup de mine restreints à la ligne du développement du tunnel. Les distances entre chaque évènement sont distribuées comme par loi exponentielle ce qui suggère que les degrés d’exactitude des locations relatives sont améliorés par un facteur de trois ou plus. Wir berichten über einen weiteren Fortschritt, die seismische Positionen unter Verwendung der zu sogenannten Doppel-Unterschied-Methode (Spottiswoode und Milev, 1998 und Waldhauser et al.,1999) zu verbessern. Doppel-Unterschiede werden entweder mit ausgewählten Ankunftszeiten oder verschiedenen Messungen von Zeitunterschieden erreicht, die von den Wellenformpaaren erhalten werden. Die Doppel-Unterschied-Methode liefert viel verbesserte relative Positionen unter Verringerung der Auswirkung von Fehlern in der Wellengeschwindigkeit von Strahlengängen zwischen jedem Fall und jedem Geophon. Weitere Verbesserungen werden erreicht, indem man bekannte Positionen, wie Sprengungen verwendet. Eines der schwierigen Probleme, die wir überwunden haben, ist jenes des Findens der besten "Gewichte" für die Zeitkorrekturen. Die Erfahrung, die in den relativen Momentspannerumkehrungen von Andersen (2001) gewonnen werden bietet den Schluß an, daß der Gebrauch von mittleren Korrekturen beständiger und genauer ist, sogar wenn die Positionen der einzelnen Fälle auf der bewerteten Reduzierung der Methode der kleinsten Quadrate basiert. On 23rd November, 1982, a party of 80 members of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy left the Wanderers Club grounds at 07hOO, and were driven in two luxury coaches to the stainless-steel mill of Southern Cross at Middelburg. Southern Cross is a trade name adopted by MS & A (Middelburg Steel and Alloys), who operate two Alloy Divisions (at Middelburg and Krugersdorp) and one Steel Division (at Middelburg). METAL '83 The International Precious Metals Institute has scheduled a seminar on the platinum -group metals for Williamsburg, DB.A., on 10th to 13th April, 1983, and has announced its keynote speakers for each of the seminar's five sessions. Metee '83 METEC - the International Exhibition for Metallurgical Technology and Equipment with Congress - which was to have been held in Dusseldorf from 14th to 20th May, 1983, has been cancelled, and will probably take place in June 1984. Koffiefontein Mine commissioned a distributed antenna system as an underground communication backbone for the DISPATCH® production management system during September1999. STAS Ltd, the supplier of the Distributed Antenna System developed the System for an Integrated and Automated Mine (SIAM). This communication system, in conjunction with DISPATCH®, fulfils Koffiefontein Mine’s present and future requirements for accurate draw control, increasing productivity and improving working conditions. The DAS as SIAMnet communication network was selected by the mine, because of its superior data transmission rate of up to 1.5Mbps at 860MHz, video and Ethernet transmission facilities, and future enhancement abilities. The results of the commissioning tests confirmed the quality and integrity of the data and voice communication. The initial installation enabled 9000 metres of underground production tunnels with voice communication inclusive of 3700 metres having data communication. This article discusses the requirements and selection of the telecommunication system for an underground mine. A description of the installed distributed antenna system follows with a summary of the commissioning tests. A discussion of the reliability of the components is followed by conclusions with suitable recommendations. Keywords: distributed antenna system, underground mining, telecommunication system.

Early removal of the shaft reef is usually considered necessary on deep level South African gold mines to avoid damaging stress build-up associated with traditional shaft-protection pillars. In the case of the relatively shallow Beatrix Gold Mine it was largely motivated by early access to ore and the consequent earlier return on invested capital. A number of options were considered to protect the shaft from possible damaging stress changes and to minimise deformations in the shaft-reef area. Numerical modelling was used to evaluate the options and to quantify as accurately as possible the likely deformations to be accommodated by the shaft steelwork designs. The option chosen was a combination of strategically placed satellite pillars and yield pillars, and backfill. Following the mining of a small inner cut during the shaft sinking process, full-scale mining is progressing away from the shaft. Suitable instrumentation has been installed to monitor deformations associated with the shaft reef removal. Enlever rapidement le filon du puits est en général considéré nécessaire dans les galeries de fond des mines d’or sud-africaines pour éviter l’accumulation nuisible de contraintes associée aux piliers de protection de puits traditionnels. Dans le cas de la mine d’or Beatrix, relativement peu profonde, l’enlèvement était motivé en grande partie par l’accès rapide au minerai et par conséquent un profit plus rapide sur l’investissement. Un certain nombre d’options furent considérées pour protéger le puits contre les changements de contraintes potentiellement nuisibles, et pour minimiser la déformation dans l’aire puits/filon. La modélisation numérique fut utilisée pour évaluer les options et pour quantifier aussi précisément que possible les déformations probables que la conceptualisation du puits devrait prendre en compte. L’option choisie fut une combinaison de piliers satellites placés à des points stratégiques avec des piliers de protection, et terre de remblayage. Pendant le fonçage de puits une petite coupure intérieure fut exploitée, et maintenant l’exploitation à grande échelle, au-delà du puits, est en cours. Les instruments nécessaires ont été installés pour surveiller les déformations associées à l’enlèvement du filon du puits. Im Fall der verhältnismäßig flachen Beatrix Goldmine war es hauptsächlich vom frühen Zugang zum Erz und dem konsequenten frühen Rückfluß des investierten Kapitals motiviert. Eine Anzahl an Optionen wurde erachtet um den Schacht vor möglichen zerstörenden Druckänderungen zu schützen und Deformationen im Riffschachtbereich zu minimieren. Um die Optionen zu bewerten und mögliche Deformationen so genau wie nur möglich quantitativ darzustellen die von den Schachtstahlkonstruktionen aufgenommen werden müssen, wurden numerische Modelle verwendet. Die gewählte Option war eine Kombination aus strategisch plazierten exzentrischen Pfeilern und Schutzpfeilern sowie Hinterfüllungen. Nach dem Vortrieb eines kleinen inneren Einbruches während des Abteufens wird der Vollvortrieb vom Schacht weg vorgenommen. Um die Deformationen, die mit der Riffschachtentfernung verbunden sind zu überwachen, müssen geeignete Instrumentenausrüstungen installiert werden.

In the fourteen years that Rössing Uranium Limited has been in production, the metallurgical operations and controls on the leaching plant have evolved through four basic stages. Initially, the emphasis was placed on the achievement of consistent plant operation by overcoming severe startup difficulties. The second stage involved the attainment of the design operating targets, and also the commissioning of the ferric-leaching reactors in order to achieve a ferric ion concentration of more than 3,0 g/l. Improvements in control then became the priority, with the emphasis on consistently achieving the target concentrations of ferric ions, total iron, and terminal acidity. The latest phase has concentrated on the optimization of costs by means of adjustments to the historically established operating parameters in order to achieve large savings on consumables while maintaining the leaching efficiencies. Apart from the obvious incentive of reducing costs in an inflationary economy and a depressed uranium market, impetus for this work was given by a change in the type of ore from the open pit, which has the effect of reducing the extraction efficiency while increasing the consumption of consumable materials. These problems and their solutions are discussed in detail, and the importance to cost-effective optimization of an accurate, up-to-date cost-reporting structure is stressed.

An in-situ experimental programme was carried out to improve the understanding of the rockmass and pillar behaviour in moderately deep hard-rock mines. The experiments were carried out at Impala Platinum mines and consisted of precise levelling measurements in the footwall of the reef, stress measurements in pillars, convergence measurements in the stope, and petroscope observations in pillars. The results were analyzed using a computer program in an attempt to quantify the characteristic behaviour of the rockmass as well as the pillars. The measured off-reef displacement data were found to co11fonn to the trends obtained from elastic modelling and the correlation could be improved by modelling the small pillars with reduced modulus to simulate yielding' of the pillars. The stress strain curve obtained from analyzing the in situ results, showed that a 6x 3 xl m pillar yields without significant load shedding at peak stress levels of approximately 208 MPa. The closure measurements confirmed that the mechanism of yielding is mainly that of pillars punching into the foundations. Slight to moderate sidewall fracturing and slabbing might be contributing to yielding, but to a much lesser degree than the former mechanism, as the petroscope observation revealed the existence of an intact region beyond 0,6m from the pillar sides.

In 1969 the Coal Division of the Anglo American Corporation was awarded the tender to supply coal to the new 3000 MW power station to be erected at Kriel, which is situated midway between the towns of Ogies and Bethal in the eastern Transvaal. The coal was to be supplied from the No. 4 Seam in the Kriel Area of the Witbank Coalfield. The No. 4 Seam in this area varies in depth of overburden from 75 m to 6 m, with an average of 55 m. Initially, the mine was planned as an underground mine incorporating a three-shaft system for transporting some 8 million tons of coal per annum to the power station. As the result of negotiations between Anglo and Escom to improve the volumetric extraction of coal from the new mine, the Kriel Division of Anglo Power Collieries was finally planned to produce 4,1 million tons of coal from an underground mine and 4,5 million tons from an opencast mine, with a resultant increase in volumetric extraction. This paper describes the opencast operation at Kriel, with particular reference to the water problems encountered and to the operation of the draglines on sloping ground to a depth of 40 m to the top of the coal seam.

The stress state on two slope profiles overlying an inclined surface with layer inclination of 50 and 150 are investigated. It is demonstrated that the induced stress state in an imbedded weak layer, exposed at the base of the slope, forms a zone of induced tensile vertical and horizontal stresses, which can lead to failure. The zone length depends on the slope angle and the angle of the inclined layers. L’état des contraintes sur deux profils en pente en superposition sur une surface inclinée avec une inclinaison de couche de 5o et 15o est étudié. L’étude présente démontre que l’état induit des contraintes dans une couche faible insérée, exposée au bas de la pente, forme une zone de contraintes de traction induites horizontales et verticales, qui peut amener à la rupture. La longueur de la zone dépend de l’angle de la pente et l’angle des couches inclinées. Die Druckvorkommnisse zweier Hangprofile auf einer schrägen Fläche mit einer Schichtneigung von 5º und 15º wurden untersucht. Es zeigte sich, dass die induzierten Druckvorkommnisse in einer eingebetteten schwachen Schicht, die am Hangfuße offen liegt, einen Gürtel induzierter vertikaler und horizontaler Zugkräfte bildet, die zum Zusammenbruch führen können. Die Gürtellänge ist von der Neigung des Hanges und der Neigung der schrägen Schichten abhängig.

To estimate three dimensional in-situ stress at great depth, Downward Compact Conical-ended Borehole Overcoring (DCCBO) technique, which is one of stress relief methods, was developed. DCCBO technique can be applied to a water-filled vertical/sub-vertical borehole. In in-situ tests, the bonding device and the cleaning system were verified to work well in a water-filled borehole with cuttings on the bottom. Um dreidimensionale in-situ Beanspruchungen in großen Tiefen abzuschätzen, wurde das Downward Compact Conical-ended Borhole Overcoring (DCCBO) Verfahren entwickelt, wobei es sich um ein diese Beanspruchungen entlastendes Verfahren handelt. Die DCCBO Technik kann auf wassergefüllte vertikale und subvertikale Bohrlöcher angewandt werden. Bei den in-situ Tests wurde die Einsatzfähigkeit der Verbindungsvorrichtung und des Reinigungssystems für wassergefüllte Bohrlöcher mit Einschnitten am Boden bestätigt. La technique de Downward Compact Conical-ended Borehole Overcoring (DCCBO) ou ‘Surcarottage par sondage à extrémité conique compact dirigé vers le bas’, qui est une méthode de détente des tensions, a été développée pour calculer les tensions in-situ à trois dimensions à grande profondeur. Cette technique peut s’appliquer à des sondages verticaux/sub-verticaux remplis d’eau. Au cours des essais in-situ il a pu être vérifié que le dispositif de liaison et le système de nettoyage fonctionnaient bien dans un trou de forage rempli d’eau avec saignées au fond.

Full mechanization of the stoping operation using rockbreaking methods other than blasting has been a target of research for decades because of the considerable payoffs in terms of increased face advance rates, productivity and safety. However, the unavailability of economically viable rock breaking tools has prevented progress so far. This has changed with the invention of activated cutting tools, which achieve significantly reduced operating forces, power consumption and wear compared to non-activated tools and thereby permitted the development and evaluation of the first mining system using this technology. Targets for the mining system were a face advance of 100 metres per month on a double shift basis for a 30 metre long panel and eventually fully automated man-free stoping. The purpose of this paper is to describe the design, development and evaluation of the mining system. This was a major collaborative effort between Anglo Platinum’s Rustenburg Platinum Mines Rustenburg Section — Townlands Business Area, Anglo Platinum’s Research and Development Department within the Mining Technology Division, the inventor of the technology Bechem GmbH, the equipment manufacturers Long-Airdox Ltd and Zollern GmbH, and CSIR Miningtek who managed the project. A structured process was followed during the development to minimize the risks involved in using such leading edge technology. The system was rigorously evaluated to ascertain the economic viability of the method and to collect data for the design of a production system.

Anglo Platinum have perceived a need to increase the rate of reef development both for new mechanised stoping technology and on conventional new developing mines. The Research and Development Division of Anglo Platinum therefore initiated an experimental reef raise project with a tunnel boring machine (TBM) at Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine (BRPM). The scope of the trial was for the boring of a reef raise 340 metres in length on the Merensky Reef. The boring phase of the trial took place over six months and the average rate of penetration of the TBM was 0,47 metres/hour. TBM utilisation was 22%. The TBM used in the trial was a Jarva MK6 manufactured in 1972 and its design with its backup system was not considered to be an ideal machine for reef development. However it was the intention of the trial to prove the concept of developing with a TBM on reef. In this respect the trial was unequivocally a success. There were many problems and long delays did occur during the boring phase. Nevertheless there is every confidence that a new TBM can be designed specifically for this type of work that will achieve high rates of advance up to (say) 400metres/month and with a more flexible steering system in order to negotiate reef changes. It can therefore be expected that TBMs will be used in the future for reef development on South African platinum mines.
