A theory is presented providing a concise mathematical description of the performance of a percussive rockdrill in terms of its principal mechanical dimensions. The theory defines the relationships between the values of thrust required to produce optimum rates of penetration at different throttle air pressures in terms of the piston areas and derives an equation for the prediction of these rates. An analysis of drillsteel life and bit wear is also made.

This paper considers the introduction of large-scale longwall mining into South African coal mining, instead of the conventional mechanized bord-and-plllar mining that is widely practised at present. The two methods are compared, and longwall mining is found to have the advantage in several respects in some seams. The most cogent reasons for the introduction of the longwall method In some seams are associated with safety strata control and increased labour costs.

The feed to the BCL concentrator is made of the ore from Phikwe No3 shaft, Selebi shaft and Selebi North shaft. The receiving bin of the concentrator has daily throughput of 7869mt live capacity of ore with feed grade from underground operation of 0.70%Ni, 0.75% Cu and 0.05% Co. The valuable minerals in the ore are Pentlandite, Chalcopyrite. Cobalt is present mainly in the solid solution in pentlandite. The common non-sulphides minerals are Amphibolites, quartz, micas, and Feldspar while pyrite and pyrrhotite are the major gangue sulphides. Pyrrhotite contains between 0.1% and 1% Ni in solid solution. From the mineralogical investigation, it was found that approximately 65% of the pentlandite in the ore occurs as exsolutions in the pyrrhotite and the grain sizes ranges from 8 to 38µm. about 25% of the nickel bearing pentlandite is medium grained and subhedral. This kind of pentlandite occurs along the cracks of pyrrhotite or as inclusions in pyrrhotite. The rest of pentlandite present is disseminated in the gangue matrix. Because of the fine occurrence of pentlandite, fine grinding was conducted in order to improve the recovery as well as the concentrate quality. A series of subsequent flotation test were performed in order to evaluate grinds of 35, 40, 45, 50, 60 and 80% passing 75µm. It was observed that ? The mass pull increased together with increasing fineness of grind ? Similar nickel recoveries were obtained at 35 and 40% passing 75µm but from 50% and 60% the grind was seen to adversely affect the nickel recovery. At 80% passing 75µm the recovery increased by small amount. ? Flotation kinetics showed higher initial nickel recoveries but these did not translate into higher final recoveries. ? Grinding finer than 80% passing 75µm yield very high grades of the concentrate in the first minute of the flotation test, and the grade is dramatically reduced in the fifth minute of the test. It was concluded that the current grind of approximately 48% passing 75µm is close to the optimum and no significant benefit were found to be associated with finer primary grinds. The inconsistence of the grade and recovery as well as the pentlandite losses will be discussed. Keywords: Pentlandite, Nickel losses, Grain size, Flotation

Additive manufacturing can be used to produce complex and custom geometries, consolidating different parts into one, which in turn reduces the required number of assemblies and allows distributed manufacturing with short lead times. Defects, such as porosity and surface roughness, associated with parts manufactured by laser powder bed fusion, can severely limit industrial application. The effect these defects have on corrosion and hence long-term structural integrity must also be taken into consideration. The aim of this paper is to report on the characterization of porosity in samples produced by laser powder bed fusion, with the differences in porosity induced by changes in the process parameters. The alloy used in this investigation is AlSi10Mg, which is widely used in the aerospace and automotive industries. The sample characteristics, obtained by X-ray tomography, are reported. The design and production of additively manufactured parts can be improved when these defects are better understood.

The primary requirement from a hydrocyclone is the classification of the feed solid particles. Particle classification occurs inside a hydrocyclone by virtue of the relative radial distribution of the suspended particles, based on their size and specific gravity. The particle classification behaviour in a hydrocyclone is experimentally studied in this paper. The phenomenological features of the air core at different feed solid concentrations and the distribution of the solid concentrations in the hydrocyclone are also analysed by the theoretical study of flow features in a steady Rankine vortex. Semi-empirical models for predicting the hydrocyclone performance in terms of flow split ratio, and cut size have been developed using the background knowledge of convoluted hydrodynamics. In addition, to validate the classification performance of a smaller diameter hydrocyclone, the potential of the present model is extended for envisaging the same for larger diameter hydrocyclones. "A system has been developed to simulate the mining of the Mufulira orebody. The main output from the system is a picture-gram from which the start date and effective life of all proposed mining faces can be measured. This information provides schedule dates for the completion of major capital development projects and stope preparation activities.The orebody must be divided horizontally into main levels and vertically into blocks of equal interval. Ore reserves are defined by specifying the tonnage contained in each block and main level. Mining faces are defined by their co-ordinates, and may themselves be split into sublevels. The simulation maintains an echelon between contiguous sublevels. Other face parameters control the speed of mining, the availability and relative priority of the face.The required production from each crusher/shaft system is specified. The technique of simulating the mining process in order to achieve the required production is described."

Sampling in a continuous flotation plant is always a challenge as these plants are meant for production and not research work. The continuous flotation operation used in this work produced three sets of data: the first was based on overall plant performance, done by sampling the feed, concentrate, and tails; the second was based on the roughers row cell-by-cell; the third set of results came from the cleaners/recleaners row cell-by-cell. The highest recovery results in all sets of data obtained lie in the particle size ranges of 40 μm and 100 μm, which is in agreement with results by other researchers in the same field. King’s theoretical (model) recovery proved to be able to fit the experimental data but there is still room for improvement as the sum of squared error ranged between 400– 1200. Data obtained in continuous flotation operation could be used with batch flotation test-work to characterize scale-up of flotation cells.

In engineering design of operators? compartments, in underground mining equipment, ergonomics principles are often neglected or not given the full recognition they deserve. This paper defines ergonomics, applies it to machinery in an underground mining environment, and describes the ergonomics analysis undertaken during the design phase of an EJC extra low-profile mining loader. Encompassing the design of the operator?s compartment of this new loader, this paper illustrates the importance of ergonomic principles within the collective design process ensuring that it is fully integrated into the design approach. An ultimate aim of this study is to ensure that all future designs follow this route to guarantee not only the outcome of a highly efficient, cost effective and productive machine but that it is also takes the human factor into account, not only in maintenance but also in operation. Maximizing comfort will have the ultimate outcome of actually increasing productivity beyond expectations.

For life-of-mine planning, as well as for short- and medium-term planning of grades and mine layouts, it is extremely important to have a clear understanding of the patterns followed by the distribution of gold and uranium within the mining area. This study is an attempt to reconcile the geostatistical approach to the determination of ore-shoot directions, via an analysis of the spatial distribution of gold and uranium values, with the sedimentological approach, which is based on the direct measurement of geological features. For the routine geostatistical estimation of ore reserves, the Hartebeestfontein gold mine was divided into 1I sections. In each of these sections, the ore-shoot directions were calculated for gold and uranium from the anisotropies disclosed by geostatistical variogram analyses. This study presents a comparison of these results with those obtained from direct geological measurements of paleo-current directions. The results suggest that geological and geostatistical studies could be of significant mutual benefit.

Over a period of three years, since samples first became available, laboratory and pilot plant experiments have been conducted to develop a method of treatment to recover copper and zinc in saleable grades of concentrates from the Prieska complex sulphide orebody. These experiments have been based on adaptations of principles investigated by research workers and applied to similar ore types throughout the world. The differential flotation process finally worked out involves a comparatively coarse grind, flotation of the copper at near-neutral pH with the use of a zinc-cyande sphalerite depressant, followed by flotation of the reactivated sphalerite. This procedure has had such success that the construction of a full-scale plant is proceeding with confidence that the small-scale operations will be duplicated or improved upon. It is to be expected that the large plant will follow the pattern of almost every flotation plant that has been built in that modifications to the circuitry and reagent systems will be made as experience is gained.

This paper describes an investigation into the prereduction of hematite fines in a fluidized-bed reactor as a means by which they can be prepared for direct smelting in a transfered-arc plasma furnace. A single-stage fixed fluidized bed reactor using the in situ gasification of coal was employed. It is shown that the hematite is reduced to magnetite at 1000 QC, the degree of reduction being limited by the inherent shortcomings of a single-stage reactor in which both the gasification and the reduction reactions have to occur. Methods by which the degree of reduction can be increased are suggested. The gasification process was studied in some detail, and three different reducing agents are compared. The dominating effect of the Boudouard reaction on the behaviour of the fluidized bed is clearly illustrated. Non-coking coals of high reactivity are best suited to this process, a finding that would complement the trend away from coke as a metallurgical reducing agent.

A brief overview is given of the issues regarding the processing of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). The printed circuit board component of WEEE is an exceptionally complex feed to possible recycling processes. Scrap printed circuit boards were selectively smelted at 1 200°C to produce a metallic alloy. Iron and aluminium were found not to be part of the alloy. The alloy was characterized by SEM-EDS, and three phases were identified: alpha and delta bronzes, and a lead-rich phase. Calculations show that about 56 mass per cent of the alloy is the alpha phase, 35 per cent delta phase and 9 per cent lead phase. A simplified approach using appropriate binary phase diagrams was used to derive a phase composition for the alloy. This was further backed by FactSage calculations, which showed that the simplified approach was appropriate for this alloy. The experimental findings and theory were found to agree well.

SYNOPSIS This paper demonstrates that the horizontal stresses induced by the creation of a tabular scope in a single mining step are always tensile at the centre of the stope span, but that compressive stresses are actively generated in hangingwalls and footwalls during sequential mining. A stress-distribution mechanism is introduced, and is used to explain the results for elastic behaviour, and for inelastic behaviour both during a single mining step and during multiple mining steps.

The production of ferrochrome alloy from chromium bearing chromite ores is conducted at high temperature under highly reducing conditions. However, albeit completely unintended, it is impossible to completely exclude oxygen from all high temperature process steps, with the corresponding possibility arising for the generation of small amounts of Cr(VI) species. Certain Cr(VI) species are regarded as a carcinogenic, with specifically airborne exposure to these Cr(VI) species being associated with cancer of the respiratory system. With approximately three-quarters of the world?s viable chromite ore reserves located in South Africa, and annual ferrochrome production approaching almost half of total annual global output, aspects of Cr(VI) generation and control are of particular relevance and importance to the local industry, and naturally to the global industry at large. This paper seeks to examine theoretical and practical aspects associated with Cr(VI)generation (based largely on experience within the local South African industry, but considered to be generally encountered in the broader global industry context), together with mitigating measures that can be applied within the context of the production processes. From the discussions it is clear that significant improvements in various Cr(VI)-related aspects have been made by the South African ferrochrome industry. However, it is also evident that several areas of uncertainty still exist, which require further research in order to better quantify risks and enhance the efficacy of mitigating steps. In the wake of the financial crisis that affected world markets in 2002, there has been an increasing international focus on corporate governance. Various corporate governance codes of practice have been introduced, such as the Sarbanes-Oxley legislation in the USA, the Combined Code in the UK, and King III in South Africa. This focus on corporate governance has increased since the most recent financial crisis in 2008, the effects of which are still being felt world-wide. In the mining and minerals industry, reliable metal accounting is essential to sound corporate governance and is also becoming a focus of increased attention and concern, particularly as the figures generated by the metal accounting system feed directly into the financial accounts of mining companies. Mass measurement, sampling, and analysis provide the input data for the metal accounting system and sound corporate governance requires that the procedures used are based on best practice and that the data generated is accurate and handled correctly, transparently, and consistently to produce the accounting reports. The AMIRA Code of Practice for Metal Accounting has been widely adopted in the industry as a means to achieve this, and the compilers of the Code have conducted numerous metal accounting audits at operations, both in South Africa and abroad. The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa advocates the importance of sustainable economic development and justifiable environmental consciousness by business. The government needs to ensure that every citizen of the Republic has access to an environment that is protected, pollution free, and sustainable by enacting certain regulations. However, there are more than 5 700 derelict and unrehabilitated mines of all types in South Africa. Former asbestos operations were among the first to be targeted for clean-up under the programme instituted by the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR), owing to the proven direct impact of asbestos pollution on health. This paper seeks to investigate the challenges faced by the coal sector as far as mine rehabilitation and closure is concerned. For the purpose of this paper rehabilitation is defined as per the Chamber of Mines Rehabilitation Guidelines publication, which defines rehabilitation as putting the land impacted by mining activities back to a sustainable and usable condition. Some of the current rehabilitation challenges are technical skills (know-how), leadership focus, poor planning, cost saving initiatives, and the government's lack of capacity to enforcement rehabilitation requirements. It is imperative that mining companies identify rehabilitation as a critical strategic pillar that directly influences license to operate. The case study evidence indicates that relevant policies, appointment of accountable people, sufficient leadership support, and the correct choice of rehabilitation equipment can assist to improve the rehabilitation and land management challenge.
