Drying operation can have a major importance in a mineral processing undertaking. The proper sizing of dryers can ensure the specified dewatering level without energy wastage. However, often the sizing of fluidized bed is done disregarding the actual residence time distribution (RTD) of the particles inside the reactor. In this case it is usual to adopt the average residence time as a design criterion. In this work, we have quantified the effect of residence time distribution on drying, ensuring that a previously adopted fraction of the particles remains inside the reactor for the required time lapse needed for drying. Design criteria such as particulate flow rate and drying time, taking into account the statistical distribution of residence time was studied, matching the thermodynamic and fluid dynamic aspects of the drying process. Experimental tests carried out have confirmed the RTD for a teetering bed as the same for a canonical ideal mixing system. Although the fluidized bed volume using the proposed formulation was higher than that found for the average time based procedure, the efficiency gain in drying has proven advantageous.

"Triboelectric separation of ilmenite ore based on the tribocharge differences between ilmenite and gangue minerals was conducted in this study. Triboelectric characteristics of ilmenite and its associated minerals were studied using polyvinyl chloride (PVC), pentatricopeptide repeats (PPR), copper, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), stainless steel (SS), teflon and quartz glass (QG) tribochargers in lab triboelectric unit. Results demonstrated that the ilmenite particles tribocharged positively while gangue minerals tribocharged negatively using PVC as tribocharger. The particle size also has a significant effect on tribocharge, and the -0.125+0.074 mm is the optimal size fraction of triboelectric separation. Charge-mass ratios of minerals increase with the increases of tribocharging length, but the increasing rate gradually reduce. At 1.5 m tribocharging length, charge-mass ratios of ilmenite, quartz, feldspar and mica are up to 6.07 nC/g, -6.05 nC/g, -4.30 nC/g and -4.56 nC/g, respectively. Based on the triboelectric characteristics of each mineral, triboelectric separation of ilmenite was conducted, and the grade of ilmenite ore increased from 15.47% to 28.40%. INTRODUCTION As a transition metal titanium plays an irreplaceable role in medical, aerospace and materials due to its light weight, high strength and corrosion resistance. Pure titanium dioxide is an excellent white pigment and is widely applied in industries of paint and textile. Ilmenite is the main raw material for titanium industry. For the beneficiation of ilmenite, series methods have been proposed, such as the application of dry magnetic and wet gravity separations to separate the ilmenite from the zircon and rutile. Electrostatic separation is extensively used in the beneficiation of heavy mineral sands for the recovery of rutile, zircon and ilmenite while flotation is used to separate fine ilmenite (Mehdilo et al., 2014; Fan et al., 2014). Compared with flotation and gravity separation, electrostatic separation does not consume water, and native properties of materials will not be changed and energy consumption will be reduced (Wang et al., 2014). Thus, the wide application of electrostatic separation and other dry separation methods is a trend in separation and purification industry, especially in water-scarce areas."

"In the Inco matte separation process, a slow-cooled converter matte is separated into three main discrete mineral phases: chalcocite (Cc), heazlewoodite (Hz) and a Cu-Ni-Fe alloy. After magnetic removal of the alloy, Cc and Hz are separated by flotation at pH>12 with diphenyl guanidine (DPG) as both collector and frother. High selectivity is achieved in rougher flotation. However, in later flotation stages such as in the middlings circuit, as oxidation takes place, Hz becomes highly floatable, resulting in a very poor separation between Cc and Hz.Starch and dextrin as Hz depressants were evaluated on the middlings circuit feed and showed no positive impact on Cc/Hz separation selectivity. Ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) extraction showed the existence of abundant surface Cu and Ni ions. The use of triethylene triamine (TETA) or EDTA in flotation did not improve Cc/Hz separation selectivity. Microflotation tests were carried out on pure synthetic Cc and Hz minerals. It was found that Hz did not float in the presence of DPG. However, Hz conditioned with either copper sulfate solution or in contact with Cc floated readily in the presence of DPG. It is concluded that the major reason for Hz flotation in the middlings circuit is due to Cc oxidation releasing Cu ions that adsorb on the Hz surface making it reactive with DPG thus rendering the Hz floatable."

"To remain competitive in an open market, mining companies are more and more requested to optimise their complex and highly multivariate processes. The increasing amount of process data, brought about by intensive use of instrumentation and the progress in computer data acquisition, enhances the need for more and more powerful and robust tools for the analysis and modelling of the process data. Now, with the emergence of multivariate data analysis (MDA) techniques, on-line clustering of mineral process behaviour is possible and could help in the extraction of valuable process operation indicators. MDA can be used in different mineral processes such as flotation, grinding, smelting etc.In this paper, we focus on grinding process considered as the most costly and power consuming node of the mineral processing scheme. Different objective-oriented levels of data clustering will be addressed.First, the evaluation of grinding operation taking into account data and constraints from all processes before (e.g. blasting, crushing) and after (e.g. flotation, leaching, etc.) the grinding node. The second level deals with process diagnosis by differentiating operation level and identifying behaviour drifts. Control and optimisation are two other levels concerned here with the selection of optimum trajectories in the drift correct.Industrial plant data are processed in order to illustrate the feasibility and the potentiality of MDA applications in addressing the clustering and interpretation of grinding mill behaviour."

The increasing demand of the filler industry regarding fineness and better delaminated products led to the development of a series of different grinding machines, which differentiate basically by the grinding mechanism as well as the kind of classification. Spiral jetmills grind, as it is well known preferably by delamination, therefore a spiral jetmill with integrated dynamic classifier has been developed. Especially the enhancement of the functional properties of the used industrial mineral fillers is a factor of highly increasing importance. These properties are very often bound to the platy shape of the minerals expressed by the aspect ratio. The developed Spiral Jetmill shows sufficient ability for such delamination and therefore increases in aspect ratio. In a series of comparative tests the suitability and advantages of this system regarding achievable fineness down to the submicron range as well as the conservation or even improvement of the aspect ratio of different minerals has been studied. As an emphasis on the results application tests with certain materials in the plastics field have been conducted. Due to the fact that in this range the required specific energy for achieving the necessary fineness increases exponentially another target is to optimize the grinding efficiency. A special feed control system provides on one hand a sufficient load inside the mill to obtain maximum utilization of the applied energy and on the other hand to prevent the mill from overfilling and coming with this a poor classification. The integrated classifier is a combination of a high speed motor with directly attached classifier wheels. This unit on one hand grants the necessary high circumferential speed of up to 190 m/s for providing an exact top cut of the ultrafine products and on the other hand gives the required operational reliability for continuous operation. Hard grindable impurities, which enrich inside the mill chamber, can be rejected from the process leading to an even cleaner product. Comparative tests on a talc product with certain free quartz impurities showed a significant improvement of the final product with respectively low loss on rejected material. This effect again had a beneficiary impact on the suitability of the final product when used in plastics application.

The large-scale vibrating screen has been applied widely in coal industry and other industrial areas as a kind of important device. As vibration mechanical device, it works very hardly and works in very bad environment so that the structure of screen is damaged easily. Therefore, it is very important that how to detect the fault of structure as early as possible to make the repair schedule reasonably and economically and to avoid the body hurt and device damage. As a kind of important structure of vibrating screen, the lower crossbeam is the main carrying structure and it is easily damaged, so it is regarded as a researched object in this thesis and it is tested under the load in the laboratory. Based on the test, acoustic emission wave signals can be got-ten by modern acoustic emission testing technique. Then, the ?wavelet packet - energy? from the characteristics of acquiring signals is used as neural network input vector. In the BP network structure design, the design of a hidden layer with variable number of BP network is established. Based on the error by contrast, the best nerve number can be identified in the hidden layer. Through integrated analysis, using Levenberg-Marquard BP study algorithm, network-training errors are relatively small, the acoustic emission signal is used in BP neural network as a pattern of recognition. In Matlab6.5, neural network model identification is created and taking advantage of nonlinearity and the ability of learning and memory of Neural Network, this model is fixed by training structure of network with training samples. The work presented shows that acoustical emission signal processing and research on early fatigue fault diagnosis based on the wavelet and the neural network is viable.

The aim of the research is to increase the recoverable value of poor, difficult-to-digest complex mineral raw materials. In the Republic Belarus, universal centrifugal-shock devices have been created for crushing, grinding and classification of ore and non-metallic mineral raw materials in dry mode, which differ from foreign analogues by a higher level of resource saving (including electricity and materials). Dry-ore preparation technologies have been tested on a pilot scale: fine crushing (replacing grinding in rod mills), grinding (replacing wet grinding in ball mills) and pneumoclassification on different types of ores, - which made it possible to identify the criteria for the suitability and unsuitability of mineral raw materials for their use. The possibility of regulating the upper and lower limit of the size of the finished material is established, the possibility of reducing the yield of slimes (-0,020 mm) to 5 times is determined. A comparative analysis of the contrast degree of separation characteristics of ore a similar granulometric composition, crushed in wet and dry conditions, is performed. The achieved contrast degree of gravity properties after dry grinding - 104,3; after the wet - 60.2. When enriching on a centrifugal concentrator, gold recovery to the concentrate after dry grinding increased by 13.12% while improving the quality of the concentrate from 78.3 g/t gold to 90.75 g/t. When testing the gravity-flotation scheme for the enrichment of poor gold-quartz ore, the increment of gold extraction after dry grinding was 7.6% for gravity and 9.5% for flotation; the total increase in extraction is 17.1%. The possibility of flotation of a larger material after dry grinding has been proved, with an extraction gain of 1.5% compared to the flotation of thinner material after ball milling. The influence of dry technology on the efficiency of the leaching of gold and silver (an extraction gain of 5.5 to 10%) and heap leaching (extraction gain - up to 18.3%) was studied. The positive influence of dry ore preparation technologies on the efficiency of gold and silver heap leaching and heap leaching, thickening and filtration is proved. Lines of dry ore preparation technologies can be used in modular complexes for processing technogenic raw materials.

With the environmental issues and water recycling becoming more significant, the development of deep cone thickeners has improved the efficiency of thickening. While deep cones performance is dependent on many factors, the sensitivity of an industrial thickener to each variable factor has not been determined. In this work, four industrial deep cone thickeners, which are used on tailings stream in Shahrebabak Copper Complex, were monitored for a year to analyze the effectiveness of different factors affecting the performance. Feed flow rate, fine fraction of the feed, solids concentration, flocculant dosage and concentration, solids density, pH, temperature and bed height were the factors investigated on the basis of partial R2 and partial correlation. Results indicated that, with positive effect, feed slurry dilution affected the dewatering efficiency most sensitively. With a negative effect, the sensitivity of dewatering efficiency of deep cone thickeners to flocculant dosage was negligible. While, decreasing flocculant solution concentration had a considerable positive effect.

We tried to convert paper sludge ash (PSA) into zeolitic product with high cation exchange capacity (CEC) through acid leaching. Typically, PSA from incineration of paper sludge contains a high percentage of calcium in the form of anorthite (CaAl2Si2O8) and gehlenite (Ca2Al2SiO7). It is difficult to convert the ash with a high Ca content into zeolites, or at least into more desirable zeolite phases. Acid leaching with HCl was applied to reduce the Ca content to synthesize zeolitic product with high CEC. The raw ash was treated with 1 M, 3 M, and 5 M HCl solution for 0.5~24 hours (the ratio of the ash to volume of HCl solution was 1/4), and then zeolitic product was synthesized from leached ash through the reaction with 2.5 M NaOH solution at 80 oC for 24 hours. During acid leaching, gehlenite is readily dissolved in a lower HCl concentration solution than anorthite. With increasing HCl concentration, the amounts of Ca, Mg, Si, Al, Fe and Ti extracted from the ash increased. Ca and Mg contents were easily extracted from ash than other elements. The contents of Ca and Mg extracted rapidly at initial stage, and then levelled off. The saturation times of Mg and Ca are almost 0.5 h using all concentrations of HCl solutions. After the synthesis from leached ashes, zeolite-A and -P were synthesized from ash leached in 1 M HCl solution, and 3 M and 5 M HCl solutions, respectively, regardless of leaching time. With in-creasing HCl concentration, the Ca content eluted from the product decreased, due to the removal of Ca via acid leaching before the synthesis, while the Na content eluted from the product increased to 3 M HCl and then decreased, which was almost similar to the CEC of the product, due to the ion exchange of Na-type zeolitic phase in the product. The change of zeolite phases in the product and the CEC of the product depend on the concentrations of Si and Al in the solution during the synthesis. The highest CEC of the product is about 220 cmol/ kg, which was synthesized from the ash leached in 3 M HCl solution.

This paper discusses current workforce demand projections for mineral processing engineers and emerging trends in mineral processing education. Attempts are made to identify gaps that often result in a mismatch between skills taught and skills needed by the practicing engineer. Clear examples of this include a less than uniform training in chemical aspects of mineral processing, and an understanding of the statistical and experimental design tools necessary to tame the often-large variation in operational parameters and plant data. The end goal is an educational system modernized to prepare mineral processing specialists for productive careers in the sustainable development of natural resources. "Zinc dust is used for the removal of primary impurities by cementation from the zinc sulphate electrolyte before electrowinning of zinc. However, the industrial zinc electrowinning plants has been reported that the zinc dust consumption is in large excess than the stoichiometric requirement. In the present investigation, morphology of the zinc dust has been altered by ball milling and utilized for the cementation of cadmium, which is one of the major impurity and compared the change in the rate of cementation with original zinc dust. Initially, 325 mesh size zinc dust was used for the optimization of the excess quantity of zinc dust to be used at a temperature of 50 °C. The chemical analysis of zinc dust before and after ball milling and morphology were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the solution was characterized by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. The rate of cementation increased with increase in ball milling time. The residual precipitate obtained after filtration was also characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis. Finally experiments were conducted to study the effect of temperature and kinetics of cadmium cementation using first order reaction kinetics. Based on the integral method, the calculated activation energy for the cadmium cementation with 4-hours ball milled zinc dust was found to be 3.39 KJ/mole. INTRODUCTION Primary production of zinc in the world is carried out by hydrometallurgical route. The primary impurities in the neutralized zinc sulphate solution that cause negative effect on electrowinning are copper, cadmium, cobalt, and nickel. Copper diminishes the current efficiency and cadmium contaminates the cathode zinc (Morgan, 1977) while electro winning. Nickel and cobalt lead to perforation in the zinc deposit and prevents the electro winning process (Abrasheva et al, 1984). Due to higher electro positivity of these metal impurities than zinc, they can co-deposit with cathode zinc at the time of electrolysis. In addition to that, some possible impurities (including cobalt) in the electrolysis may lower the hydrogen overvoltage, allowing deposition of hydrogen at cathode resulting in fall of current efficiency. The deposition of zinc on the cathode is possible only at higher hydrogen overvoltage which is practicable in the absence of such impurities (Raghavan et al., 1999). Cementation is one of the prominent purification technique, and in that less reactive metal can be replaced by highly reactive metal by allowing them into precipitation. Cementation of cadmium from zinc sulphate electrolyte is being done by the addition of zinc dust."

"The flotation process of native Rare Earth minerals such as bastnasite, monazite, mixed minerals of bastnasite and monazite, using the new effective collector Dh was studied in this paper, respectively, and the flotation properties are described. The good qualities of the new collector Dh were revealed through comparing with other collector of Rare Earth minerals. The test results of different ore samples show that at moderate pulp pH (8.5-9.5), Rare earth minerals can be effectively separated from barium, calcium and silicon bearing intergrowth minerals (barite, calcite and silicate minerals) and high quality Rare Earth concentrates can be obtained successfully by the new collector Dh, acid silica gel, turpentine and reagents fitting together rationally. In order to determine optimum technical conditions, the effect of pulp pH, pulp temperature, pulp density and the effect of dosage of reagents (Dh and acid silica gel) on the flotation were investigated in the test.Simultaneously, the paper explores the mechanism of the flotation of Rare Earth minerals from intergrowth minerals. The infrared spectra for Dh and Rare Earth cation by analysis in theory shows that Dh formed chelate complex with Rare Earth cation and were adsorbed on the surfaces of Rare Earth minerals. The mechanism of the intergrowth minerals depressed by acid silica gel can be explained as gummy colloid hydrolyzed from acid silica gel which are selectively absorbed on the gangue minerals, making them hydrophilic and depressed, with pulp pH value of alkalescent."

High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) is efficient equipment in comminution process. HPGR could be a good option for preparing ball mill feed at the first stage of grinding due to its high efficiency and low energy consumption. Closing with a screen, these mills are utilizing as one of the principle parts in mineral processing industries, especially for iron ores. Recently, HPGRs are working as primary mills at 4 developing lines in Gol-e-Gohar Iron Ore Processing Complex, Iran. Different mechanism of particle crushing in compare to the other tumbling mills makes the HPGR as certain equipment with its own particular controlling parameters. Hydraulic pressure, roller speed and level of material inside feeding hopper are the most important variables influencing grinding efficiency of the HPGR. To figure out how they impress the process and operation situation, different industrial tests were carried out and the best result (d80 about 8 mm for HPGR discharge) was achieved at 180-190 bar pressure (P), 300 rpm speed (S) and 50% of hopper level (L). It is worth noting that this finding has been observed through past pilot test too. We also used design expert method (DX7 software) to develop the best design and analysis the test results, as well. According to the mechanical restriction of HPGR and process limitation in the plant (based on the industrial results), we adjusted value of each parameter in a logical range. Therefore, 20 industrial tests were conducted, as DX7 recommended, and the various impacts of the parameters and their interaction were identified based on statistical analysis. As the authors expected, it was revealed that after presser, roller speed is a critical variable because of its significant role in residence time of the particles between the rollers. The function below has been determined to explain the relation between different parameters and the response.

Roller presses are widely utilized in mineral industry for fine milling and compaction. Recently used models are providing only limited information about the material behavior in the roll bite. This paper introduces a 2-dimensional finite element model for analyzing those two basic processes. A pressure-dependent plasticity model with linear elasticity was used as a constitutive model for the particular material. Coulomb friction law was used to describe phenomena on the material/roller surface interface. Two basic roller geometries are considered: smooth (used for milling and compaction) and with cavities, commonly used for briquetting. Comparison of the results obtained from the model with experiment indicates that they are following the general trends of experimental values recorded with laboratory roller presses. It is shown, that the model is suitable to analyze material behavior through all stages of the rolling process: feeding zone, nip region, neutral plane and release section. It can predict pressure, shear stress, slip of the material over the roller surface, material velocity field, failure of the compact during release and the course of other important process variables. This allows the process engineer to gain an improved understanding, leading to a better process and equipment design and control.

The studies on the product finer than 12 mm due to crushing and sizing plant of Gol-e-Gohar Iron Ore mine showed which this material contains significant amount of valuable iron minerals. Based on the carried out experimental studies on representative samples of fine hematite iron ore, a processing flow sheet was designed to upgrade iron content. This plant is known as first hematite iron ore enrichment plant in Iran which the dry medium intensity magnetic separators (with magnetic field intensity 4500 gauss and high gradient) has been used. The main objective of the plant is production of high iron product with iron content more than 61% and weight recovery more than 55% from the feed with iron content of 54%. In this plant, at first material are screened by a single deck screen (6mm), then oversize particles is separated at one stage by magnetic separator, while undersize ones at two stages. Based on the results of experimental tests, a final high iron product with iron content of 62.4% and weight recovery 63.9% can be achieved. It should mention which the iron content can be enhanced through increasing the speed of magnetic separators especially at the part of separation of finer iron ore.

This paper describes the recent developments, arising from research at Leeds, in the computer modelling of packing of complex shaped particles and prediction of physical properties of the structures represented by the packing. The computer model DigiPac, is capable of packing particles of any shapes and sizes in a container of arbitrary geometry. The ability to predict packing structure of real particle shapes and to compute directly some structure-dependent physical properties (such as liquid permeability, mechanical strength/ stability, compaction and sintering, dissolution and leaching, etc.) is obviously highly desirable and has significant potential in industrial applications. Examples are presented relating to the packing of granular materials.

Metso Mining and Construction Technology is one of the world leading suppliers of equipment and knowhow for aggregate and mining industry. The processing capacity, ease of use, and reliability are featuring Metso?s state-of-the-art cone crushers. Crushing is a complicated process affected by numerous parameters. The optimized crusher kinematics is one of the key factors for high performance. To fine tune the crusher kinematics and crushing chambers one needs to know how different parameters affect. The main cone crusher parameters are head angle and diameter, gyration point, shaft speed, eccentricity, stroke length, and inclination and design of crushing cavity. Selecting the correct combination of these parameters is a multi task optimization challenge. In practical life there are more factors to achieve satisfactory performance, like crushing chamber wear and profile management keeping the performance constant over the whole wear life, control of crusher frame loads, ability to handle disturbances in feed material etc. The extensive research work has lead to a solution that enables the highest possible material density in the crushing chamber. This design provides maximum reduction of processed material and thus increased share of 0/10 mm product. High density in the cavity offers further benefits, such as high throughput capacity, less material contact with wear parts and even load on crusher frame and bearings. The challenge that an equipment supplier involved with high density crushing is how to design a robust cone crusher, which is able to cope with the high crushing forces due to high resistance from the crushed material against the gyration movement. Metso has launched a new series of cone crushers HP3, HP4 and HP5 that are all able to work in high density crushing applications The test results and evidence from over 300 installations clearly prove the effectiveness and importance of high density crushing. Due to complex mineralogical and chemical interactions of the value and gangue mineral phases present in uranium-containing lateritic ores, deleterious pulp gelation which impacts on value metal recovery sometimes occur during atmospheric leaching. In this study, the leaching behavior and particle interactions of selected oxide (hematite, quartz) and clay minerals (muscovite, chlorite), which constitute predominant host gangue phases of typical lateritic uranium ores are investigated to provide basic, mechanistic understanding of temporal pulp gelation phenomenon. Isothermal, batch leaching with H2SO4 was carried out on concentrated dispersions (30 ? 57 wt.%) of single minerals at pH 1 and 25 or 70 °C and their concomitant solution, speciation and rheology (shear yield stress, viscosity) were characterized. It is clearly shown that despite the high oxide content of lateritic ores, the pulp chemistry and rheology is largely affected by the incongruent leaching behavior of more reactive, acid-consuming aluminosilicate clays. Furthermore, time- and temperature-dependent alumino-silicate species polycondensation interfacial reactions are shown to be responsible for the enhanced particle interactions, reflecting strong pulp rheology in agitation and pumping. If not properly mitigated, high pulp shear yield stress and viscosity have a striking impact on processability and hence, value metal recovery.

For a correct evaluation of the performance of any process, it is important to reconcile the data gathered in the plant from the material balance point of view for all the streams flowing in and flowing out of the process unit. There are two main approaches to reconciliation of data, which involve minimization of the sum of the squares of: (i) the closure residuals and (ii) the component adjustments; both weighed with the estimated variances of the components. Though, these approaches have served us well, it has not been possible to ascertain if the reconciled values for various components and the split factors obtained using these approaches are truly the best estimates. In this paper, this aspect has been investigated by analyzing pseudo-experimental data of known error structure on size classification of particles in a hydrocyclone. Three types of basic error structures were considered for the measured component values: absolute error, relative error and chi-square error. The error structure was modified by adding a random component of error using normally distributed random numbers corresponding to zero mean and different levels of variance. By carrying out a large number of simulation experiments, it has been shown that in the presence of random errors, irrespective of the basic error structure of data, which is usually unknown, the chi-square error minimization criterion can be used to obtain most reliable results.
