With growing populations, infrastructure projects are utilizing underground space to expand transportation networks, water supply and sewer disposal systems and hydropower facilities. These new projects require large diameter tunnels to meet the growing demands. As the tunnel diameter increases, not all rock mass properties are scalable and precedent experience becomes less reliable. One such non-scaleable property is lamination thickness. Numerical modelling was conducted to determine the influence of lamination thicknesses on a 16 m diameter tunnel. Five different areas of excavation response were found to exist for laminations ranging between 0.16 to 16 metres in thickness. For this tunnel diameter, critical lamination thicknesses of 6 metre and 1 metre were found to exist. Above 6 metres the excavation response was similar to isotropic models. Below 6 metres the stresses and yield are channeled by the lamination boundaries, increasing plastic deformation. Below 1m multiple lamination units become unstable and the displacements increase significantly and the shape and extent of the yield zone size changes dramatically. The yield zone is controlled by bed deflections and bed parallel shear. As the lamination thickness decreases tensile failure first begins in the haunch area and progressively extends above the crown until a self-limiting plastic yield zone shape is reach at lamination thicknesses below 0.4 metres. Conclusions drawn from observations at the Niagara Tunnel Project are those of the authors.

"In this presentation, the SONARtrac™ technology platform will be described. CiDRA's proprietary clamp-on, passive sonar array-based flow meter technology performs two independent measurements – flow rate and fluid characterization. Firstly, the meter provides the volumetric flow rate of the mixture by measuring the speed at which naturally occurring turbulent structures convect with the flow past an axial array of sensors. Secondly, the meter uses similar sonar-based processing techniques and naturally occurring sound in the process fluid to measure entrained air levels. The result is a unique ability to measure the flow rate and entrained air level of most fluids – clean liquids, high solids content slurries, and liquids and slurries with entrained air.Also to be presented is the application of the sonar-based technology platform in a variety of oil sands processes, hydrotransport, and minerals beneficiation applications. In particular, difficult slurry flow measurement and control in the areas of comminution and flotation such as mill discharge, hydrocyclone feed/overflow, final concentrate, thickener discharge, and tailings will be discussed. In addition new real time maintenance free process measurement capability will be presented in the areas of entrained air in slurry, collection zone gas holdup (?g), and slurry velocity profiling. The operational advantages and value of these measurements, even in the presence of scale buildup, will be discussed.INTRODUCTIONFlow measurements in the mineral processing and oil sands industry suffer from the limitations placed by previously available flowmeters including the commonly used instruments such as ultrasonic meters, magmeters, turbine meters, orifice plate meters, vortex flow meters, Coriolis flow meters, and venturi meters. The desire or requirement to make a non-contact measurement that is accurate and robust, and can be performed on practically any type of fluid within practically any type of pipe has driven the creation of a new class of flowmeters. This new class of flowmeter technology utilizes sonar-based processing algorithms and an array of passive sensors to measure not only flow, but also fluid composition."

"This paper discusses the project history, process design and layout of the Rainy River Gold Project mill. The circuit consists of a 55 x 83 primary crusher, 15 MW SAG mill and 15 MW ball mill. Both mills are twin pinion with LSS and VFD drives. A pebble crusher is located in the process plant with bypass and stockpile options. Gravity concentration followed by 30 hours of leach residence, carousel CIP, carbon recovery, cyanide destruction and tails disposal in a 1,428 hectare tailings management area (TMA).The Rainy River Gold Project is located approximately 65 km northwest of Fort Frances in north western Ontario. The project is scheduled to be commissioned and reach commercial production in mid-2017. Expected cost is $US877M and is comprised of an open pit mine, process plant, tailings management area and supporting infrastructure. "Orway Mineral Consultants Ltd (OMC) as a consultancy has specialized in comminution circuit design for over 30 years. The OMC Power Model is OMC’s in-house software for specific grinding energy power-based circuit calculations. The model uses ore hardness parameters from testwork, circuit configuration, equipment geometry and operating conditions as inputs. The model combines proprietary and published power models to predict the total specific energy and the specific energy for each of the components of the comminution circuit. This makes the software a valuable tool for the design and validation of JKSimMet modelling or actual plant performance. Proprietary calculations have been developed and reconciled with over 100 plant benchmark projects encompassing a variety of comminution circuit configurations.This paper describes the OMC approach for determining power requirements for the design of grinding circuits. The accuracy of the OMC Power Model software is confirmed through plant survey benchmark performance and comparisons are made with other power modelling techniques. Practical examples are presented, showing applications for single stage SAG (SS-SAG), SAB and SABC circuit configurations.IntroductionConventional low throughput grinding options, consisting of multi-stage crushing followed by rod and ball mills, have almost become obsolete in the move to higher milling rates required to process lower metal grades. Grinding circuits with fully autogenous (AG) or semi-autogenous (SAG) mills, often combined with ball mills are now the standard to meet the high capacity requirement for processing ores with lower metal grades. Simulation software and power-based equation methodologies have been established for designing AG/SAG based grinding circuits and predicting their energy requirements.Presently, power-based equations remain the principal method for designers to size mills and estimate the power requirement for comminution circuits. The technique is simple and it relies on the design to specify a feed and product size plus a hardness index to produce a specific energy value (kWh/t). The desired throughput of the mill is multiplied by the specific energy to give the mill power requirement, which is used in turn to size a mill for dimensions, internal geometry and loading conditions to match the power draw."

"The Penna shaft is the deepest single-lift shaft in North America. Agnico-Eagle started sinking the Penna shaft in 1995 with a hoisting plant capable of hoisting 1800 t/d from a 2240-m deep shaft. Exploration success at depth led to the replacement of the existing double drum hoist by another double drum hoist capable of hoisting 7000 t/d. The use of another double drum hoist, instead of a Blair multi-rope winder, to hoist 24.5 t skips was only made possible by lowering the safety factor.This paper describes recent experiences at Penna and in South Africa, and examines the possibility of extending the double drum hoisting system to a depth of 3 km. IntroductionThe original Penna production hoist was a 4.88 m (16 ft) diameter double drum and single clutch machine. Béliveau (1996) and Scott (1996) have described this hoisting plant. In 1998, a decision was made to increase mining capacity from 1800 t to 4500 t of ore per day from the shaft bottom. Final capacity had to include an allowance of 1800 t of waste per day for future capital projects. While daily capacity was to be 6300 t, it would, by taking into account the different rock densities, be equivalent to hoisting 7000 t of ore.The steps taken to lower the safety factor were presented by McLaughlin and Scott"

"Although diamond mining is a relative newcomer to the Canadian mining industry, with the first diamond mine coming on stream in 1998, Canada is already a significant producer of high quality diamonds. This paper will review diamond production trends and highlight some of the projects currently under development, which have the potential to enhance Canada’s role as a significant diamond producer.Diamond recovery plants generally incorporate well-established mineral processing and recovery techniques, with issues such as product security, cut-off sizes, and diamond preservation becoming important considerations when developing process flowsheets. A diamond processing plant must achieve three key objectives, namely:• Liberation of the diamonds from the host rock;• Separation of the heavy minerals, which include the diamonds, from the host rock;• Recovery of the diamonds from the heavy mineral concentrates.Processing technologies and equipment commonly utilized in diamond processing plants will be reviewed and some of the significant issues associated with each option briefly discussed.Typical process flowsheets will be presented.Finally, an overview of De Beers’ Victor diamond project, located in northern Ontario, will be provided. This potentially significant diamond producer is currently at a pre-feasibility stage of development.DIAMONDS IN CANADAWorld Diamond ProductionCommercial diamond mining commenced in earnest with the discovery of the Kimberley diamondfields in South Africa in the late 1800s, and this resulted in a dramatic increase in the supply of diamonds. As can be seen from figure 1, world diamond production, mainly from South Africa, Angola, Congo, and Namibia, remained relatively constant through the early 1900s until the development of the large Russian kimberlite pipes in the 1950s. Production increased again in the 1960s and 70s with the development of the Botswana mines, but the most significant increase in global production came from the Argyle mine in Australia, which came on stream in 1983 and produced a peak of almost 43 million carats in 1994, representing approximately 40% of the world market. Production from Argyle has since fallen-off as grades have declined and the strip ratio has increased with the deepening of the open pit."

"All mineral processing facilities that use girth gear driven mills need to inspect the gear teeth on a routine basis, whether it be every six months to every three years. The inspection frequency depends on gear tooth condition, and the objective is to ensure the operational integrity of the gear teeth. Conventional methods such as magnetic particle testing, visual inspection or dye penetrant examinations rely heavily on operator interpretation. At best, these techniques can determine whether a defect exists, but are unable to provide information on defect severity. This paper describes the use of combining combined eddy current array (eca) and alternating current field measurement (acfm) to provide a complete survey of all surface breaking indications on the whole gear tooth depth. This method accurately determines the size, length and depth of any cracks found on the surface.INTRODUCTION In order to gain a fundamental understanding of the evolving operational and production behavior of a piece of machinery over a specified time period as part of an effective condition monitoring program, a robust data collection process must be firmly established and adhered to. To be effectively implemented within an organization, a condition monitoring program must have support of not only the maintenance, production and engineering staffs, but also executive management support to ensure successful roll out to realize the maximum productivity of the machinery and subsequent cost-savings. One of the key elements of a mineral processing facility that use gear driven SAG Mills as a primary stage for grinding solution, is the integrity of the critical gear unit that drive the mill. For the maintenance team, condition monitoring on the gear unit is crucial for preventative maintenance. A catastrophic failure in the critical gear unit would require a minimum of ten days to replace the gear set, depending on the damage occurred. This, of course, would only be applicable if the client had a spare critical gear set in inventory. If a gear set had to be ordered, it could take from four months to two years to receive a new gear set. For example, in 2007, there was a global backlog of these types of gears sets resulting in a two year delivery. The maintenance costs associated with a catastrophic failure of this type would easily cost in the millions."

"The research question of the present work is the following: at which speed should a rotary sample divider operate in order to produce representative samples of iron ore concentrate? In order to solve this problem, the representativity of a rotary sample divider treating iron ore concentrate from Iron Ore Compagny (IOC) Carol Lake mine in Labrador City was studied in the laboratory of mineral processing of “CEGEP de Sept-Îles”. The rotary sample divider speeds tested are: 20, 40, 50, 60, 80 and 100%. The results show differences in both weight and particles sizes distributions with respect to the various rotation speed used. 20% has shown to be the speed that generates an almost normally distributed samples for both weight and particle size. As the speed of the rotary sample divider increases, the polygon of frequency for weight distribution progressively becomes a two modal distribution curve. 40, 50 and 100% speeds generate normal samples distribution curves with respect to particles size only. 60 and 80% are the speed to be avoided since they generate multiple modal distribution curves for both weight and particles size.IntroductionIn the mining industry, samples representativity is part of the key elements for management decisions. In fact, “Sampling provides vital information to plant operators, clients and geologists to profitably run and operate iron ore mines and plants” (Kevin Thorne et al. 2007). At the laboratory scale, several types of techniques’ are currently used to perform sampling. This include: grapping, alternate spading, quartering, riffles divider and rotating divider etc.. Among all these instruments, rotary divider is the most commonly used. Nevertheless, the usage of a rotary divider is not a guaranty for samples representativity since the results have shown to be related to running speed of this instrument. For the present research work, the idea is to use iron ore concentrate to quantify the representativity of a rotary sample divider. In other words, the research idea is to determine the speed at which a rotary sample divider produces representative samples while treating iron ore concentrate from Carol Lake mine. The present report will give an overview of the methodology used and the principal results obtained."

"Fine mineral particles are difficult to process by flotation because of their low collision efficiencies with air bubbles. Decreasing air bubble size and increasing mineral particle size through flocculation are the most common approaches to improve flotation efficiencies. Herein we demonstrate that nanoparticle flotation collectors can be engineered to selectively induce fine mineral particle aggregation and promote flotation.Flotation tests of clean fine pentlandite (Pn) and Clarabelle Mill (CBM) rock tails and pyrrhotite (Po) tails that contained significant amount of fine pentlandite have confirmed that the nanoparticles can serve as both collectors and selective flocculants for fine pentlandite. In the case of clean fine Pn, the nanoparticle collectors virtually can float almost all Pn fines. Scoping tests on CBM tails have shown significant improvement in nickel recovery. Addition of nanoparticles as a flotation aid can recover 20% of the nickel contained in the rock tails and 40% of the Pn contained in the Po tails compared to current mill operations giving 0% nickel recovery from rock tails and no Pn selectivity from Po tails. Ongoing work includes attempts to identify optimal strategies for employing nanoparticles in fines flotation.IntroductionFine particle flotation is an industry-wide challenge in mineral processing. Fine mineral particles are difficult to process by flotation because fine particles have low mass and thus low momentum, which results in their low collision efficiency with air bubbles (Dai, Fornasiero, & Ralston, 1999). In addition, fine particles have not only high specific surface area but also more active surface area, which causes high reagent consumption. For base metal sulphide minerals, particle size between 10 µm and 70 µm is a typical range where high flotation recoveries can be achieved with conventional flotation chemistry and acceptable cell residence times. For pentlandite, the flotation recoveries decrease sharply when the particle size is below 10 µm and hydraulic entrainment is the dominant mechanism, giving recoveries proportional to water recovery and no Pn enrichment. "The Antamina orebody is a geologically complex, polymetallic skarn located in the Peruvian Andes. A range of copper and copperzinc ores are campaigned separately through the concentrator producing copper and zinc concentrates as well as lead and molybdenum by-products.Ore type classification at Antamina is based on chemical assays; geological or lithological variations are not considered. Consequently, each ore type demonstrates a wide range of concentrator performance.Antamina is currently implementing a system to track ore movements from the shovel face to the concentrator. Relatively sophisticated models of run-of-mine and coarse ore stockpiles ahead of the mill will be used to account for the variable delay between mining and milling.One of the numerous benefits of ore tracking is the ability to directly associate the measured concentrator performance with a physical location in the orebody. Using existing mine planning software, three-dimensional models can be created of such performance measures as metal recovery, concentrate quality, operating cost, and reagent consumption.Such a database of information allows the true value of different ore sources to be determined. The value of an ore source is conventionally measured as metal content (individual or combined ‘equivalent’) with a cut-off grade applied to indicate some base level operating cost. However, the true value of an ore source should include dynamic factors like haulage cost, reagent use, smelter penalties, and even prevailing metal prices. If an ore source is considered from all perspectives rather than simply its potential to deliver value, the concept of ore becomes more flexible. Any ore source that reveals itself to be unprofitable can be eliminated from the mine plan or possibly blended with others to improve its value. The ability to predict mill performance, and thereby profitability, is a powerful tool.In an operation such as Antamina, where managing ore sources, campaigns, and the delivery of a variety of concentrates in a narrow timeline to customers is a daily challenge, prediction is the key to success and improved efficiency."

"Generally speaking, the most intensive efforts at dust control in the mining industry have, in the past, been concerned with underground operations and where uranium ore or high silica material is processed. In the past several years, Stoop Rock has made Intensive efforts to reduce dust levels in it's Iron ore pelletizing complex. There have been no great engineering break-throughs with regard to dust control in such plants, and certainly no new engineering techniques have had to be applied at Steep Rock. This paper deals with how significant improvements in dust levels have been achieved through minor modification to dust collectors and ventilation units, improvements in operating practices, and education of supervisors and hourly personnel.PROCESS DESCRIPTIONSteep Rock Iron Mines is located 120 miles west of Thunder Bay near Atikokan. Manitoba Mining and Milling operations consist of three underground mines (Thompson T1, T3 and Birchtree), feeding the Thompson Mill. Three years ago, a collaborative effort involving Mines Exploration, Mines Project Development Group, Mill Technical Services and Vale Base Metals Technical Excellence Center was initiated to establish and verify the cause of high variability in concentrate quality and Ni recovery at the Thompson Mill. One outcome of this work was a program to systematically characterize the mineralogy and metallurgical performance of current and future orebodies feeding the mill. Mineralogy results show that high value enabling ores typically have a high pentlandite to pyrrhotite ratio and benign silicate mineralogy (mostly quartz and feldspar from sedimentary host rocks), while metallurgically challenging ores contain some combination of pyrite and/or hexagonal (non-magnetic) pyrrhotite and/or elevated quantities of talc (with associated carbonates) derived from altered ultramafic host rocks. The metallurgical performance of these two ore types has been simulated by an Excel particle flotation model, which calculates the relative floatability of particles based on the particle’s mineral composition and mineral locking determined from MLA images. The relationship between these mineral properties measured by MLA and metallurgical performance was established using 13 monthly composite samples from Thompson Mill. The model was then validated with results of laboratory flotation experiments on individual orebodies submitted for evaluation. The validated model can be used to predict plant metallurgical performance based on individual ore bodies feeding the mill. Individual orebody’s grade-recovery curves are assumed to be additive, and can be weighted in proportion to the mill feed to predict mill recovery over the same time period. The ore mixing can be done with a simple Excel spreadsheet and comes with a graphical output for easy visualization of the resulting grade-recovery curve.

"The argument has long raged across the oceans as to what the best AG/SAG mill aspect ratio is. The North American practice of a high aspect ratio of two, diameter twice length, through to the South African and Scandinavian practice of an aspect ratio of as low as a 0.5. Within the collaborative P9 AMIRA project the MPRU of the University of Cape Town and the JKMRC of the University of Queensland have been collecting plant data pertinent to this issue over the past four years.The JK SAG mill model developed by the JKMRC is based upon data collected from mills having a range of aspect ratios from 1 up to 2. The maximum mill speed, mill load, and ball filling in the fitted data base were all below the operating range common in South Afr-ica. The extension of the P9 project into South Africa therefore lent an ideal opportunity to collect data in a whole new window of operation that would allow the range of applicability of the semi-empirical SAG model to be greatly extended.At the heart of the differences in aspect ratio is the completely different operating practice for high- and low- aspect mills. The mill filling, mill speed, and recirculating loads of closed-circuit single-stage operation have more influence on the differences in operation than the pure aspect ratio relationship. Relationships for load have been extended to 45% filling, with the modified model showing the measured peak in throughput as the mill filling increases. The ball load relationship now covers fillings of over 30% balls (of total mill volume), thus including so-called SAG-ball mills. The influence of closed circuit operation has been measured. It has been found that a key issue of the high slurry flows associated with closed circuit operation, especially when closed with a cyclone, is the pulp discharge limitation of the traditional grate and radial lifter configuration. It has also been observed that absolute mill length is more of an issue than aspect ratio. Slurry flow along the mill and charge segregation within the load are being investigated on pilot and full-scale mills to provide data for potentially modifylng the perfect mixing model that is used for the SAG mill.Improved understanding of these aspects of SAG mill operation and extension of the JK SAG model to better cover the entire range is allowing serious direct comparison of high- and low aspect mills for the first time. It is the conclusion of the researchers working in this area that there is no one best practice, that in fact mills across the range have their application based on ore type, desired product, available capital and on operating costs. Developing robust designs allows direct comparison of two-stage circuits using high-aspect primary SAG mills, with single-stage closed circuit low-aspect SAG mills. The new operations within South Africa are now considering both circuit types, and data is presented on selections that cover the full range of aspect ratio and operating practice."

"As mine size and tonnage continues to increase, material handling/processing equipment has also increased in size with 400 MT haul trucks, 2000 KW crushers, 12 M SAG/AG mills, 8.5 M ball mills, 3000 M3 flotation cells and 12.5 MW HPGR’s all with planned designs to increase in size further. Related equipment including vibrating screens have also increased in size with screens seeing feed rates of 3000 MTPH. Open circuit SAG Pre-Crush and closed circuit HPGR flowsheets are becoming more common with large screening requirements. Large multi-slope (banana) or horizontal screens are commonly used for these applications, however as the size of these screens has increased, the number and size of the brute force/overhead exciters has increased but with limitations. An example is a SAG discharge screen that will see surges of material from the SAG mill which overload the screen, reducing the screen stroke or throw causing a large reduction in screen efficiency with excessive fines & moisture in the screen oversize feed to the pebble crushing circuit. This paper will present some actual examples of the use of Two-Mass screens as a solution to these overloading problems and the advantages of Two-Mass screens in other high tonnage applications.Brute Force Drive Compared to Two Mass Drive Vibrating ScreensThe standard single mass screen as depicted by figure 1 is generally recognized in the mining industry. It is characterized by the screen body – labeled as the single mass (Mt) that is supported by isolation springs (Kiso). The stroke needed to process material is obtained by incorporating large eccentric wheels and/or drive boxes (Fb) directly mounted to the screen body via a drive tube."

"Today's demand for better and more efficient methods inspires new approaches to construction and mine development.A project at Asarco's Aquarius Mine provided a challenge that resulted in the adaptation of a civil construction technique to a mining application.This paper describes the construction of an escapeway shaft to surface from the mine's 150m level. The prime consideration was to provide the most cost-effective method of establishing a shaft collar in the 145 ft (44 m) of water-bearing overburden. This problem was resolved with the employment of the drilled in-caisson method.The remainder of the 500ft (152m) deep shaft was raise bored and portable hoisting equipment was used to install a permanentmanway and shaft liner.IntroductionHaving completed the first phase of exploration development in 1982, J.S. Redpath Limited was engaged to carry out an engineering and cost study to investigate the feasibility of re-opening Asarco's Aquarius Mine near Timmins, Ontario. The scheme was to develop the proven ore reserves and proceed with shrinkage stoping while carrying out further exploration development and diamond drilling.One significant and costly component of the project was the provision of an escapeway shaft to supply additional ventilation as well as a second means of egress from the mine. The major complication to this task was the presence of 145 ft (44 m) of water-bearing overburden at the site. The first and obvious approach was to use conventional ground-freezing methods as had been employed previously on .this property for the initial development shaft. This being the only ""sure"" method available at the time of the budget estimate, it was used as a basis for the study but its considerable projected cost and time demand inspired further investigation into other possible solutions.After considerable research and several brainstorming sessions, a Redpath team came up with an approach whose basic procedures had been used extensively in the civil construction field, although they were novel to the mining industry."

A campaign was undertaken during the greater part of 2001 at Noranda’s Brunswick mine concentrator to investigate the role of gas (air) superficial rate (Jg) distribution to the cells in the final Zn cleaning stage (bank of seven cells), i.e. the Jg profile. Three profiles were tested: “balanced” (each cell with same Jg), “increasing” (from cell 1 to 7 proportionally), and “decreasing,” along with an “as found” profile in a parallel control bank. The experimental design allowed for two confounding factors, changes in ore type and circulating load. The increasing profile consistently gave the best metallurgy (down-the-bank grade / recovery). The reason for improved performance was the response of the first cells in the bank where the increasing profile gave the highest selectivity of sphalerite against nonsulphide gangue (NSG). The other profiles gave lower selectivity and higher zinc recovery in the first cells, which combined to reduce overall bank performance. The higher selectivity with the Increasing profile is attributed to the low gas rate in the first cells reducing water recovery and hence limiting entrainment of NSG. The increasing profile was subsequently configured for all four stages in the zinc cleaner circuit.

Introduction The sliding-form method of erecting concrete structures was first devised and used in the early part of this century by the Sante Fe Railroad Company for the erection of a grain elevator at Santa Fe, New Mexico. A somewhat related principle has been employed for a number of years in shaft lining work and, to our knowledge, was perfected in Butte, Montana, but until the building of the concrete headframe at the Jeffrey mine of the Canadian Johns-Manville Company, Ltd., at Asbestos, Que., the method, as applied to surface structures, was quite foreign to the mining industry in Canada. The current shortage and cost of structural steel shapes has no doubt contributed more than any other single factor to the investigations that have led to the use of reinforced concrete as a headframe building material. Mining men in western Quebec and northern Ontario have shown a great deal of interest in the design and construction of the headframe at the East Sullivan mine in Bourlamaque township, Que., and we have had many queries regarding the methods used and, in particular, for an explanation of the sliding-form principle. This article is written in an attempt to set forth the conditions which were to be met; to explain the construction methods used, and to discuss the economy of concrete headframes as compared with the conventional steel structures with which the mining fraternity is familiar.
