Application of integrally bladed disks (blisks) is of increasing interest in compressors of aero engines. Blisks are preferred due to their potential for size and weight reduction, for increased performance and for reduced manufacturing costs compared to conventionally bladed disks. Erosion of the blisk aerofoils in service reduces engine performance, and can result in short shop visit cycles. This significantly increases the life cycle cost of these components, particular when considering that eroded aerofoils can't be exchanged easily for blisks during refurbishment. Shop visit cycle times can be extended and maintenance costs can be reduced through the application of an effective protective coating. The ongoing development of an erosion resistant coating and deposition process suitable for coating complex blisk geometries is described here. The coating is a multilayered W /TiB2 system exhibiting superior erosion resistance compared to known single- and other multilayer concepts. A modified sputter process is used to enable coating even of blisk geometries with shadowed surface to competitive recurring cost.

The focus of these investigations is on site observations complemented by laboratory investigations. Of particular interest is deducing the corrosion rate, at selected mine sites, as determined by the installation of monitoring coupons.

Global mine hoisting regulations require safety fall arrest systems to be installed on vertical conveyance systems capable of safely decelerating and supporting a fully loaded conveyance in the event of a rope severance. Most current arresting systems are incapable of producing controlled safe deceleration rates. Although safety ?dogs? achieve marginally acceptable results on wooden guides, difficulties arise in achieving safe deceleration performance requirement where safety arrest systems operate on steel shaft guides. Previously, arresting systems capable of operating with steel guides have been incapable of producing controlled deceleration rates during the arresting of free-falling conveyances. Most are ?instanton? systems, whereby an occupant inside a conveyance being arrested would be subjected to unacceptably high deceleration forces. This paper briefly highlights the background to the selection process of Rio Tinto?s Technical Staff of a suitable Mine Conveyance Safety Fall Arrest System for #1 Shaft at Rio Tinto Oyu Tolgoi Mine, Mongolia. It also describes the Drop Test and Free Fall Test procedure and the results leading to the acceptance of the Horne Group Levelok® Emergency Braking Technology for the Oyu Tolgoi #1 Shaft in Mongolia. The paper highlights Rio Tinto?s primary objective for the selection of this advanced technology on their primary production shaft cage system as an emergency safety catch braking system combined as an advance hydraulic chairing system. It describes the design and operational parameters and the 'Fail to Safe' interfacing with current automated mine hoist systems.

About 85 % of the 350 tonnes of gold produced by 25 mines in the onhwe t Territories (NWT) since 1935 has come from the Yellowknife-area mines, Con and Giant , which exploit shear zones in Archean mafic volcanic of the Slave Structural Province. Four percent of the total production has been from Archean iron formation-hosted depo its, mainly from Lupin Mine, which today produces more gold than Con and Giant combined and has been primarily responsible for the increase of WT gold output from 5 to 12 tonne per year since 1981. The remaining gold ha been won from the following deposit typesall but the last being in Archean rock : sedimentary-volcanic contact depo its uch a Discovery and Salmita (10 %); turbidite-hosted quartz-vein depo its uch a Camlaren and Ptarmigan (1%); Proterozoic deposits such as Shear Lake and Fox (1#) . All but I% of WT gold has come from the Archean Slave Structural Pro ince, which is also the premiere exploration area for gold deposit types that have yet to be productive in the NWT. These types include stratabound gold in mafic and in felsic volcanic rocks (eg. , at Indin Lake and Courageous Lake, respectively) as well as gold in plutonic rocks (eg. Anialik Gnei Complex). Deposits similar to those in the Slave have al o been found in the Archean Ennadai Belt of the Churchill Structural Province. In the Cordillera. there is potential for placer gold and for gold associated with Cretaceou intrusions.

THE problem of dust control in metal mines has, of late years, received considerable attention. In 1932, a detailed study of dust conditions at the Sullivan mine was undertaken and, while there are no actual data available regarding conditions prior to that date, there has unquestionably been a great improvement as a result of the investigation and of the preventive methods adopted. In attacking the problem, three main factors were considered: first, and most important, how to prevent dust from being formed; second, how to depress or collect it if formed; and third-if unable to accomplish these-what precautionary measures must be adopted to prevent inhalation of this dust. Seven distinct methods of dust control are now practised at the Sullivan. Six of these are employed underground; they are tabulated below in the order of their relative importance. The seventh method is used in the crushing plants on the surface. "Electrodeposited nanomaterials are increasingly implemented in advanced industrial applications in the aerospace, automotive, defence, electronic and energy sectors due to their outstanding physical, chemical and mechanical properties, including increased strength and wear resistance, and superb magnetic properties. As with the development of any class of new materials, the corrosion behaviour of these electrodeposits requires considerable attention. This presentation reviews major developments in the understanding of the corrosion behaviour of nanocrystalline metals, alloys and metal-matrix composites over the last 20 years, with emphasis on how their intrinsically high density of intercrystalline defects does not compromise their corrosion resistance as initially expected.INTRODUCTIONOver the past 20 years there have been considerable advances in the understanding of the corrosion behaviour of nanocrystalline metals, alloys and metal-matrix composites. In this paper, the corrosion properties of nanocrystalline nickel, cobalt, zinc, and copper and some of their alloys are reviewed with emphasis on how a reduction in grain size affects their corrosion behaviour in different environments.It is possible to synthesize nanocrystalline material with microstructural refinement down to the range of 1 to 100 nm using a large number of processing methods. There are five basic synthesis methods that can be used to classify the different techniques: vapor-phase processing, liquid-phase processing, solid-phase processing, chemical synthesis, and electrochemical synthesis. Depending on the synthesis method, different microstructures (equiaxed, textured), shapes, and forms (films, particles, bulk material) may be produced. In addition, other factors may be introduced (eg. residual porosity or amorphous phases), aside from microstructural refinement, which can contribute to the observed properties (Erb, 2010). In order to interpret and categorize the resulting microstructures, a dimensional structure modulation scheme was introduced by Siegel (1996) in which zero-dimensional nanomaterials refer to individual particles, clusters, etc. One-dimensionality results from a layered (less than 100 nm thick) structure. Two-dimensional nanomaterials are thin, layered structures containing grains (less than 100 nm) within each layer. Finally, three-dimensional nanomaterials are bulk structures with an average grain size less than 100 nm."

Grinding media is of great concern in the mining industry mainly because its consumption represents an important part of the costs during mineral processing and consequently, of the total mining business OPEX. In addition, grinding media consumption impacts directly on flotation performance through negative contamination by corrosion, affecting the pulp chemical potential, complicating the understanding and control of the process, as galvanic interactions between mineral species also occur. In addition, during the process there is also a physical consumption of the grinding media through erosion and impact. In both cases, mineralogy has an important role because pulp abrasion power, chemical reactivity, rheology, hardness and other variables depend on the minerals contained in the pulp and their interactions. In the present study, a geometallurgical and phenomenological model, which describes the grinding media consumption and its relationship with mineral hardness expressed by Bond Work Index, was obtained based on advanced mineral characterization techniques such as Hylogger3TM, X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence and experimental grinding tests using a laboratory mill applied on Chilean copper pulps. The results obtained show that pH has an important effect on grinding media consumption, because corrosion varies with hydrogen ions availability. Also, mineral hardness depends on mineralogical composition, but textural analysis must be performed to have a better description of this property. Finally, minerals present in a sample define the grinding media consumption mechanism, because a sample with harder minerals and a greater value of Bond Work index is capable of protecting grinding media from impact wear, while a sample with lower hardness but with a big sulfide minerals content would be more aggressive with grinding media because corrosion is more important in this case. The geometallurgical model obtained is capable to relate the grinding time, mineral hardness, content of sulfide minerals and grinding pH to estimate the grinding media consumption.

DOME MINES, Limited, is a gold producer situated in the Porcupine area of Ontario, 500 miles north of Toronto. During the year 1960, '71 4,600 tons of ore were milled, yielding gold bullion valued at $6,025,370. Prior to conversion to natural gas, an average of 3,200 tons of coal was consumed annually, one third of which was obtained from Canadian sources with the remainder coming from the United States. Due to the distances involved, the freight charges increased the pithead cost by as much as ISO per cent. Steam is generated at a central boiler plant and used for timber treatment, plant heating and process steam. Until August, 1960, steam was supplied during the winter months by two water tube coal-fired boilers, each rated at 200 boiler horsepower at 100 per cent output. The Roy Lloyd Mine in northern Saskatchewan is a high-grade underground gold mine which is currently supplying ore to Golden Band Resources Inc. (Golden Band)?s Jolu mill. Prior to the operation of the mine, an underground exploration program was conducted intermittently at the site. During both the underground exploration phase and mining, Golden Band has implemented water recycling to reduce freshwater usage within the mine in order to address concerns over the potential for impacts associated with freshwater usage and to reduce the volume of effluent discharged from the site. Golden Band initiated an underground exploration program at the Roy Lloyd Mine site (formerly called the Bingo Project) in October 2007 to better delineate the mineralization of the Bingo gold deposit. The exploration program provided geological information required in order to improve the confidence level of the geological resource model and also provided information to aid in the mining of the deposit, such as the determination of groundwater inflow rates. Underground production mining started in March 2011. This paper provides an overview of the mine water recycling methods implemented at the site during both the exploration and initial mining phases of the project, and the success/drawbacks of these measures to date, including the potential cost savings in the form of reduced treatment and monitoring costs inherent in a reduction of the volume of effluent discharged from the site. The paper will also discuss options that are currently being evaluated in order to further assist Golden Band?s ability to recycle water and reduce the volume of effluent discharged to the environment, while ensuring effluent discharged from the site to the environment meets criteria.

It is also a major oil producer, leads the world in the production of asbestos and in five years will be the leading producer of potash, a basic constituent of fertilizer.It can be seen that Canada's wealth and economic progress lies in being a primary producer of economic minerals and in building secondary industries to manufacture finished products from these raw materials. Canada's future in the field of mineral production looks bright, with our resources just starting to be tapped. Outside of the large expanse of Soviet Russia, we are by far the world's most fertile mineral exploration area."

Laboratory studies suggest that improvements of coke strength brought about by pre-heating caking coals before carbonization accrue from inadvertent oxidation rather than from other low-temperature changes in the coal mass. Controlled oxidation of highly caking coal, followed by laboratory carbonization, produces cokes which, in terms of a laboratory scale tumble test index, are equivalent to those obtained from prime metallurgical blends. Appropriately formulated blends of exhaustively oxidized and fresh caking coal similarly yield cokes with strength indices comparable to those of cokes made from the same coal after oxidation under optimum conditions.

"Comminution is an energy intensive and expensive process consuming approximately 40-50% of the total processing costs in a mining operation. This process poses an even greater challenge with gold ores due to their low elemental concentration and small particle size. Over 99.9% of the ore fed to the mill is waste which must be removed during the ore processing stage. Preconcentrating the Run of Mine (ROM) ore before feeding the mill will result in significant cost savings. In partnership with Sacré-Davey Engineering, Agnico Eagle Mines Limited identified this opportunity and is currently evaluating the implementation of sorting technology to preconcentrate the ore or upgrade the waste material at its operations. This paper will discuss the steps adopted by Agnico Eagle in the evaluation and installation of sorting technology at its operations. Since the Company has a large portfolio of operations, the first step in the project was to shortlist the operations that had the highest probability for successful application of the technology. Following this, the top three operations were selected for bench scale evaluation. The projects which showed the most economic potential were then considered for detailed evaluation and pilot plant installations. This paper provides an insight into the methodology followed by Agnico Eagle and Sacré-Davey in the evaluation of the technology.INTRODUCTION The benefits of ore sorting technology are being increasingly understood by the mining industry today. The application of ore sorting in gold mining is attractive due to the nature of the mineral distribution. The presence of high value minerals distributed in an extremely small mass of the ROM ore creates a tremendous opportunity for preconcentration with ore sorting. Since Agnico Eagle currently has a portfolio of eight operating mines and numerous development projects and exploration properties, the challenge was to identify the deposits which had the most favourable mineralogy and grade distribution for successful ore sorting. The success of ore sorting is mostly based on the minerals present in the deposit and the grade distribution. The minerals signify the amenability of the deposit for ore sorting and the kind of sensing technology to be used. On the other hand, the grade distribution demonstrates the amount of material that can be rejected without losing value. In order to understand a deposit’s characteristics, it is important to examine the sample’s behaviour with various sensors and then assay it to know its actual value. It is a common practice in the mining industry to document assay value of drill cores and/or material feeding in and out of the mill. However, those VALUES (are insufficient to understand the grade variability on a granular basis. To capture the ore variability in very high resolution and significantly improve the selectivity of the material feeding the mill, it is vital to assay the samples on a rock-by-rock basis, as this is the level of resolution which will be examined by the ore sorter during sorting. A careful and elaborate procedure was followed in evaluating the technology at Agnico Eagle’s operations which is discussed in this paper."

"OLI Analyzer is a software package that uses the powerful Mixed Solvent Electrolyte (MSE) model to simulate the behavior of multicomponent electrolyte solutions from infinite dilution to the limit of fused salt, and from temperatures below the freezing point up to near critical temperature of the mixture. The software also allows the creation of thermodynamic parameters for new chemical systems unavailable yet in public-domain or commercial software databanks. This communication reviews the basics of the model and provides some examples of modeling hydrometallurgical applications with emphasis on high temperature applications, including calcium sulfate scale formation in autoclaves, high temperature pH inference and iron control. INTRODUCTIONModeling of electrolyte systems has been of particular interest to various industrial processes, such as separation processes (e.g., solution crystallization, extractive distillation, seawater desalination or bio-separations), environmental applications (e.g., gas treatment, wastewater treatment or chemical waste disposal) and hydrometallurgy (e.g., pH control and neutralization, iron control, scaling and fouling of equipment). Using a chemical model, time-effective predictions of various properties of electrolytes can be obtained, which is beneficial not only during process monitoring, but also during process optimization and process scale up. As a result, pilot scale studies can sometimes be eliminated where budgetary constraints exist. Development of such a powerful model requires the use of a speciation-based model, in which solution chemistry is explicitly addressed (as compared with some models that treat electrolytes either as undissociated or fully dissociated systems), despite being computationally challenging. In addition, as a feature of electrolyte systems, speciation equilibria inherently influence the phase equilibria due to complex formation, ion pairing, and acid-base reactions. Therefore, how the electrolyte solutions behave at various conditions may differ significantly due to the non-ideality, which must be carefully addressed to obtain a model that is applicable to a wide range of conditions such as concentration, temperature, pressure and solvent system."

THE cyanide plant of the Cariboo Gold Quartz Mining Company, Limited, at Wells, B.C:, in the Barkerville section of the Cariboo mining division, was erected during the latter part of 1932 and placed in operation in January, 1933. The initial capacity of the plant was about 50 tons daily. This was increased to 100 tons at the end of 1934 and stepped-up to 150 tons in September, 1935. It is expected that further plant extensions, for milling a total of 200 tons daily, will be required during the early part of 1936. Recent additions to the mill have been so planned as to permit ready expansion to 275 tons daily when underground development warrants the milling of this tonnage. It is the purpose of this paper to outline briefly the steps taken to bring the plant to its present capacity and to comment on possibilities for further plant expansion. The gold in Cariboo Gold Quartz ore occurs as free gold in the quartz and on pyrite surfaces. Some of it is very finely divided, specks l/10,000 inch having been observed microscopically, according to Dr. G. Hanson. In addition to pyrite, which comprises probably 15 to 20 per cent of the mill feed, galena and sphalerite are present, with small amounts of arseno-pyrite and chalcopyrite. Sulphobismuthites-chiviatite, galenobismutite, cosalite, etc.-occur more or less frequently in certain sections of the mine. Following tests on Cariboo ore by the Mines Branch, Department of Mines, at Ottawa, treatment of the ore by straigh t cyanidation was recommended and a 50-ton plant employing continuous counter-current decantation was erected. This plant was built as a pilot mill, the intention being to erect a larger mill after metallurgical treatment had proved successful over an extended period. This original installation, however, has been enlarged and retained as an operating unit, additional equipment being added to it as capacity increases have been required.

"The Corbin area of southeastern British Columbia has been a coal mining area since 1908. Byron Creek Collieries Ltd. Has operated its Coal Mountain Mine in this area from 1974 until the present. In February 1981, this company was purchased by Esso Resources Canada Ltd.Coal Mountain is structurally complex and standard computer algorithms are not applicable to model the overturned synclinal structures and faulted bedding surfaces. This paper discusses two approaches used by Esso Resources staff to model the geology of Coal Mountain.The first approach projects digitized cross-section data along trend to develop a large data base which correctly approximates the shape of the structure. The spatial orientation of the structure is corrected by merging the generated data set with drill-hole data. The second approach uses digitized cross-section and bench-plan geology to generate a block model of the coal reserve.HistoryThe Coal Mountain Mine, also known as the Corbin Mine of Byron Creek Collieries Ltd. is located 24 kilometres south of Highway 3 in southeastern B.C.In 1905, two American businessmen recognized the coal potential of the area during a horseback tour. The two businessmen, D.C. Corbin and E.J. Roberts, formed the Corbin Coal and Coke Co. to mine and market coal from their newly acquired 6075 hectares of coal licenses. By 1908, the town of Corbin was under construction, a 22.4-km rail spur was constructed from the mine to the main CPR line and the first underground mine began to produce coal. An open-pit operation was also developed at the 1828-metre elevation using a steam shovel loading into rail cars. The company operated continuously until 1935, when a lengthy strike forced suspension of operations.In 1943, the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company Ltd. (now known as Cominco Ltd.) operated two surface mines to produce coal for its smelters at Kimberley and Trail, B.C. This operation ceased in 1948."

Determining moisture content and rate of flow of a solid product make measurement and control of dryers unusually difficult. This paper de-scribes a method of accomplishing this with readily made air-temperature measurements. The system can cope with changes in feed moisture and feed rate. It does not measure solids temperature. The system's application to several typical rotary dryers is described, and control schemes using feedforward techniques are explained.

"Introduction0N MAY 2th, 1953, Socony Seaboard Pembina No. 1 well, located 70 miles west-southwest of Edmonton, was completed as a producer of high-gravity oil from the Cretaceous Cardinm sand. This event is possibly the most significant in the development of the oil industry in Western Canada since the Devonian discovery at Leduc in 1947. The result of the Pembina discovery and the follow-up drilling has been a tremendous increase in interest in the Cardium formation.Descriptions of the Cardium formation, as it occurs in the 'Central Foothills' and in the 'Southern British Columbia Foothills' have been presented by R. E. Folinsbee (9)-and C. R. Stelck (21), respectively. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the more regional aspects of the subject.The name Cardium was first used .as a stratigraphic term in 1863. Dr. James Hector ( l2), geologist attached to Captain John Palliser's exploratory expedition, gave the name 'Cardium to the whole section of marine Cretaceous beds exposed along the Bow river west of Calgary."

In this study, the micro-FTIR analysis was used to investigate in-situ surface properties of coal and its components (macerals) and these were directly correlated to the coal hydrophobicity as measured by the contact angle before and after reagent addition to understand the suitability of the reagent for flotation. The micro-FTIR technique can provide a semi-quantitative analysis of the chemical functional groups on coal surface, exactly where the contact angle is being measured. Selected functional groups and their ratios that provide information about aromaticity, the contribution of oxygenated groups, and aliphaticity are used to evaluate the reactivity between reagents and various coal components. The observations made in relation to the susceptibility of some reagents towards certain coal components should lead the way to a smarter way of using process design in terms of reagents selection for coal flotation.
