The Committee's proposed standards establish definitions and guidelines for the reporting of Exploration Information, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves in Canada and are identified as the "CIM Standards" and referred to as such hereafter in this document. To provide additional clarification to Qualified Persons (QPs), guidelines have been included with the respective definitions. The CIM Standards are applicable to all minerals including industrial minerals, diamonds and other gemstones. Reserve definitions for bitumen, natural gas and oil are not included in these Standards. The CIM Standards are not intended to cover mineral inventory estimates that will be reported to government agencies.

Craigmont Mines Limited mine 50,000 tons of ore and waste per day from the open pit at Merritt, British Columbia. An electric-powered "down-the-hole" drill, a diesel-powered rotary drill and two electric-powered rotary drills have been used. All primary drilling, as a result of cost and operating experience, is now performed with two electric-powered rotary drills. Trials with various loading techniques have increased the amount of AN-FO and decreased the amount of commercially prepared slurries used for primary blasting. Approximately 95 per cent of the primary blasting is accomplished with AN -FO, mixed at the hole. Introduction THE Craigmont mine is located near the village of Merritt, B.C., 240 miles northeast of Vancouver. The concentrator has been in production since September of 1961. Craigmont is a combined open-pit and underground operation. To date, slightly more than 95 per cent of the mill feed has been mined from the open pit. As underground development proceeds, the ore requirements from the open pit will decrease. The average milling rate from September, 1961, to April, 1964, was approximately 4,900 tons per day.

Flotation works very well for particles that are typically in the range 20 to 150 µmin diameter, for base metal ores. In this range, it is possible to get quite high recoveries in conventional flotation machines. Outside this range, the recoveries decline progressively, whether it be with the very fine or the coarse end of the size spectrum. In this paper, the reasons for the drop-off in recovery are briefly reviewed, together with strategies for future work. Recent progress in the author's laboratory will be described. These include the Concorde Cell, which takes advantage of the high dissipation rates in the shock wave created when a gas-liquid mixture reaches supersonic velocities. The environment thus created is very beneficial for the flotation of ultrafines. For coarse particles, the reasons for the drop-off in recovery can be related to the highly turbulent nature of the pulp in a conventional flotation cell. To improve recovery, it is necessary to find a way of bringing particles and bubbles into contact in a quiescent environment. A new process for coarse particle flotation will be described, in which a fluidized bed is created in the flotation cell. The flow conditions are very gentle, and the high solids concentration leads to rapid rates of capture of the particles. Experimental results are presented. It is apparent that the maximum floatable size for coal and minerals can be increased by a factor often over the limits found in current practice. Advances

MR. J. J. McIntyre (International Coal & Coke Company, Ltd., and McGi1livray Creek Coal & Coke Company, Ltd., Coleman, Alta): Mr. Burrough's excellent paper, Metallurgical Coals of the Crowsnest Area, seems especially timely now, when the need for developing iron industries in the west, as well as in the east, is receiving so much attention. His -thorough review of the 'coking' industry is an especially valuable contribution, along with which the following brief remarks on coking in the Crowsnest Pass area of British Columbia and Alberta may be in order. When the Crowsnest Pass line of the Canadian Pacific railway was built there were great expectations for the non-ferrous metal industry; quite a number of smelter's were al-ready in operation in British Columbia and the northwestern United States, and further expansion was confidently expected. The suitability of the medium-volatile coking coals of the Pass for making metallurgical coke had been recognized from the time the fields were first explored. By the time the mines were fairly well developed there was already a market to war-rant the building of coking plants, and a common belief that expansion of the market would require a large coking industry. The first coke production was from plants built by the Crowsnest Pass Coal Company, Ltd., at Fernie, B.C. in 1903, and the International Coal and Coke Company, Ltd., at Coleman, Alberta. These plants were followed by others built by the Crowsnest Pass Coal Company, at Michel, B.C., by West Canadian Collieries, Ltd., at Lille, Alberta, and by Leitch Collieries, Ltd., at Passburg Alberta, and by a plant at Hosmer, B.C.

In conventional Rotary Kiln-Electric Furnace (RK-EF) laterite nickel processing, management of dust continues to be problematic. A more efficient processing of dust represents an opportunity for energy efficiency, increased production, and productivity. PT International Nickel Indonesia (PTI), together with Vale Base Metals Technology Development (VBMTD), has successfully developed and implemented a novel flowsheet enhancement that capitalizes on these opportunities. In the novel flowsheet, the dust recycle stream is moved forward in the RK-EF laterite nickel smelting process. The dust is injected into the kiln's main burner, as opposed to being recycled to the dryers. A similar treatment of dust is commonly practiced in the cement industry; however, application to nickel smelters has not been fully developed to date. This paper describes this dust insufflation technology, the process through which it was developed for laterite nickel processing, and summarizes the lessons learned. A key conclusion is that successful new technology development requires a multi-disciplinary team involving members from research and development, study management, engineering consulting firms, project implementation management, process technology and operations.

Every year the conventional direct reduction processes ? Midrex and HYL III ? increased their market share in the world steel production, even though they are only economically feasible in countries where natural gas is available at competitive prices. In this context, the new Midrex projects are based on large reactors (Megamod - 1.5 to 1.8 Mt/y of DRI), reduction temperatures of the metallic burden up to 850oC, with bustle gas temperatures between 960oC e 1050oC. Thus, the requirements of metallic burden performance, as well as the evaluating methods, usually based on ISO standards, need to be reviewed. It is well known that the standards usually applied to quality evaluation do not reflect the performance of metallic burden inside the reactors. This paper describes the different methods of evaluating the disintegration under reduction of DR pellets based on ISO 11257 standard. This is the most important method used by pellet producers and customers for evaluating DR feedstocks. The different methodologies tested to evaluate the disintegration under reduction had varying results, evidencing the relevance of the method and the quality of the pellet. Nevertheless, validating the method in an industrial reactor is still fundamental.

"The Otjikoto mining and milling complex is 90% owned by B2Gold Corporation, and began commercial operation on February 28, 2015. The milling circuit operates at a throughput 3.3 million tonnes per annum, with an average reserve gold grade of 1.28 g/t. The ore is high in Gravity Recoverable Gold (GRG), which varies between 73-91%, depending on ore type. Overall gold recovery since start-up is 98.2%, with about 63.5 % coming from the gravity circuit as doré. 2016 cash operating costs, and all in sustaining cost (“AISC”) were $361 and $604 per ounce, respectively.During design, three ore types were tested for GRG content, and based on the high GRG value of all three ore types, the decision was made to treat the full ball mill circulating load by gravity. Once operating, the gravity circuit performance was characterized by performing a detailed gravity audit, which included the ore, cyclone classification, Knelson concentrators, and the Consep Acacia intensive leach system. The deeper ores contain significant pyrrhotite, and this created some unusual challenges that had to be overcome. This paper presents the gravity circuit design process, the circuit commissioning, and the audit results and ongoing improvements.IntroductionHeadquartered in Vancouver, Canada, B2Gold Corp. was founded in 2007. Currently, B2Gold has five operating mines, and numerous exploration projects in various countries, including Nicaragua, the Philippines, Namibia, Mali and Burkina Faso. It is situated approximately 300 kilometers north of Windhoek, the country’s capital, within the Province of Otjozondjupa. The formulation of a theoretical basis for the evaluation of in-situ coal through the use of geophysical logs is outlined. This involved the development of an approach to the interpretation of resistivity in environments having multiple conductive and non-conductive components. Utilizing this approach and other conventional interpretation techniques, a program was developed yielding accurate determinations of the in-situ percentages of coal, water and ash for the evaluation of coal deposits. Basic information obtained from the CWA program can be utilized in numerous aspects of total mine planning . Some examples of the practical application of this method are included.

"Labrador City is located in the southwestern portion of Newfoundland-Labrador, approximately 965 kilometers north-east of Montreal. The mine and beneficiation complex of the Iron Ore Company of Canada, known as the Carol Project, is situated 535 metres above sea level in a climatic region characterized by cold winters and short, cool summers.HistoryThe Iron Ore Company of Canada commenced work in the area in 19 4 9' however, it was not until 1958 that the decision was made to proceed with mining operations. The ore body consists of Specular Hematite (Fe203) and Magnetite (Fe304) with small quantities of Limonite and Geothite. The average grade of the ore bodies is 39% iron.The mining facilities, crushing plant, and concentrator were in operation by the early part of 1962. In the summer of 1961, a decision was made to build a pelletizing plant adjacent to the concentrator. This plant was designed, erected and placed in operation during 1962 and the first half of 1963. Since the completion of the pelletizing plant, additional expansions to both the pellet plant and concentrator have taken place in 1967 and 1973. Today, the Carol Project has the capacity to produce 20 million tonnes of concentrate from which 10.5 million tonnes of pellets can be produced.The period 1980-85 spans a period of energy crisis, world-wide recession, and a consequent re-structuring of the North American steel industry as it struggles to survive in an arena of excess world steel making capacity, government subsidized industries, and the increasing competition from overseas and from developing countries.The media headlines over the past few years echo the woes of the industry and the strategy plans for survival of the fittest. Today's buzz words are foreign competition, steel import quotas, joint ventures, employee participation, work rules, quality, productivity, and state of the art technology."

To properly understand industrial conditions in Spain it is necessary to consider the early history of the country. Spain is very backward in many lines. They use the sickle for cutting grain, and plows for cultivating the land, which resemble those of Biblical days. In the great mining camp at Bilbao only one steam-shovel is in use, although about two hundred million tons of ore has been produced, and this almost entirely from open cuts. It is the lack of industrial development, such as is found in many other countries, which permits large mining enterprises to be controlled almost entirely by foreign capital, although Spain is such an old country, and which permits mines opened in the days of the Phoenicians to still operate. Such deposits in America would be exhausted in a comparatively few years. The Phoenicians are supposed to have reached Spain about 1100 B.C. and to have worked some of the properties in the Rio Tinto district. The Carthagenians invaded the country about 236 B.C., and they were driven out about 205 B.C. by the Romans. The Romans ruled until 483 A.D., when they were overthrown by the Visigoths. Then, about 711 A.D., the Moors from Africa became prominent and they were finally expelled by the Spaniards in 1492. Spanish power reached its zenith under Phillip II, during the latter half of the 16th century, and since the close of that century the country has lost its prominent place among the nations. There are some evidences of revival in the development of good roads, the construction of a satisfactory network of railways, and the building of magnificent thoroughfares through the capital city, Madrid.

Following considerable experience with the beneficiation of Wabana iron ore by standard methods, a study was made of the benefits to be obtained by semi-reduction. The basis of the laboratory program was an extensive mineralogical and liberation investigation which guided subsequent work. Partial reduction and beneficiation on a laboratory scale was carried out on lump ore and fines. The reduced ore was magnetically concentrated and the concentrated fines were briquetted. Data are presented on reducibility, sizing vs reduction rate, magnetic cobbing and separation, and the elimination of phosphorus. Past work is reviewed briefly and comments are made on the relation of laboratory to pilot-scale tests.

THE first application of the cementation process took place in the year 1864, according to H. Standish Ball, when a break in the brickwork lining at a depth of 270', in one of the Rhine Preussen pits near Homburg, was sealed by running in milk of cement from the surface by means of a small hand pump. At about the same time Monsieur Portier adopted the method in France for repairing breaks in shaft lining. Figure 1 is descriptive of the Portier system and is of interest when compared with modern practice. During the next thirty years numerous attempts were made to improve the process; the general method used in sinking being to put clown bore holes outside the perimeter of the shaft for the purposes of injection. The cementation process was first recognized as an important as-set to mining in 1896 when Monsieur A. Francois developed his method of boring and injecting inside the shaft below the permanent water level. "Collaboration among Ventilation Engineers, Mine Inspectors, worker representatives, health and safety officers and management is key to an effective operational mine ventilation management. Mine ventilation training, ventilation survey reports for mine stakeholders and interaction with mine frontline workers and management concerning safety, energy saving, assets management and maintenance are effective tools in implementing best industry practices and significant reduction of ventilation operating costs without compromising safety. These approaches may not be new to well established mining companies but the real dilemma is how to implement them effectively and this is what this paper will address.INTRODUCTIONManaging an effective mine ventilation system is becoming increasingly challenging, especially during tough economic times in the mining industry. Management strives for more production while frontline miners work hard to surpass the production targets, thus improving their incentives and above all aiming to enhance the prospects of their job security when the mining industry is facing challenging times. Taking shortcuts by not fully following the safety regulations or industry best practices are often notable, resulting in the rise of Workers Compensation Board claims and temporary shutdowns of active workings, compromising productivity and increasing the operating costs.In accordance with the Mines regulations in various jurisdictions in Canada and the US, it is evident that companies adhere to establishing basic ventilation management systems through the provision of the code of practice, procedures, work practices and standards/guidelines. This is aimed at ensuring the health and safety of underground workers (de Souza, 2017). However, the challenge to many operations is the improper implementation of the mine ventilation regulations including some managers showing reckless disregard for workers safety by focusing on production and not worrying to address ventilation problems (Steven & O'Keefe, 2010). Other challenges facing effective ventilation management include inadequate training of frontline workers on ventilation system and hazards associated with poor ventilation systems such as toxic gases, dust, heat, and underground explosions (Mufson et al., 2010; Suvar et al., 2017); friction between mine managers and the mine inspectors (Mufson et al., 2010), improper maintenance of ventilation system and inventory management, among others."

Hong Kong has a dense distribution of utility services laid under its road network. Utility undertakers frequently demand road openings to install new services and/or maintain existing ones. Road openings can cause troubles to the road network and negatively impact the public interest. Highways Department is responsible for managing road openings in Hong Kong under the Land (Miscellaneous Provisions) Ordinance. Highways Department has spent a lot of efforts to computerize excavation permit processing and utility management. The computerized system has gone through several generations and the current one is called the excavation permit management system (XPMS). On the one hand, the XPMS handles various excavation permit processing functions including permit application/approval/refusal/issuance/extension/termination, fees/costs, permit conditions, and permit period assessment; on the other hand, the XPMS accounts for some important utility management issues such as spatial check, coordination of multiple openings, traffic management, audit inspection, and defect liability. This paper discusses how the application, coordination, and other administrations of an excavation permit are eased by using the XPMS in Hong Kong. Background information such as the governing legal and regulatory framework, and Highways Department?s administrative structure is introduced. The system architecture and advantages of the XPMS are presented. The work procedures and various functions of the XPMS are studied in detail.

Palabora Mining Copper has a unique ore body composition which unlike other copper ore bodies has three main components in significant proportions; these are copper bearing ore, magnetite and dolerite. The high content of dolerite, a hard barren material, creates a high proportion of pebbles which normally are recycled back to the mill. This action increases the mill bearing pressure and power progressively until corrective actions are taken. A logical action to solve the pebbles generation would be to incorporate a pebble crusher. This in fact was done however two fundamental issues were encountered; the high content of magnetite and existence of a cyclone classification section. Due to the high content of magnetite, metal detectors have not been able to work efficiently to separate tramp metal which causes damage to the pebble crushers. The existence of cyclones in the circuit had a detrimental effect on the final product when the pebbles crusher was online producing coarse sandy material. Due to the difficulties in treating pebbles via conventional procedures and the unique Palabora ore composition and characteristics, sorting technology was investigated at laboratory and pilot scale. It was found that a combination of optical and electromagnetic sorting could efficiently separate dolerite from the copper bearing and magnetite ores. This paper reports the findings of the laboratory and pilot scale work performed and discusses the additional benefits to the circuit.

The Strathcona mine, with a large new underground operation and concentrator, was recently brought into\ production by Falconbridge Nickel Mines Ltd. The tailings disposal and water utilization problems at Strathcona are described in this paper, with sections devoted to the Moose Lake watershed system, tailing impounds, the construction of dams and the operation of the Moose Lake neutralization plant for the elimination of acidity, including the equipment used.

Dr. K. A. Clark: No one will doubt the statement of fact that, during drilling operations through the bituminous sand beds in the Mildred-Ruth Lakes area, the core-barrel was found to contain bitumen with minor amounts of sand instead of bituminous sand. But many will doubt the interpretation of this fact as meaning that beds of bitumen occur interstratified with the bituminous sand beds. They will prefer to hold faith in the laws of physics, which deny that sand will float on oil or that fluid under pressure will not flow away through a permeable medium, until it is proved that the appearance of the oil in the core-barrel was not due to circumstances surrounding the drilling of the bituminous sand beds. The implication of the interpretation that sand is floating on oil is clear and it is unacceptable. Bituminous sand is unconsolidated sand more' or less saturated with a viscous oil. It is as difficult to conceive of bituminous sand lying on top of a body of the viscous oil as it is to conceive of unconsolidated sand more or less saturated with water lying on top of a body of water. The only difference between the two concepts is that the oil is viscous whereas the water is fluid. Oil-soaked sand placed on viscous oil would, when released, sink through the oil slowly, whereas water-soaked sand would sink through the water quickly.

Denison Mines Limited has been processing uranium ore in the Elliot Lake area for the past 20 years. As the original concept of uranium processing has been modified somewhat over this period, the present paper will describe the current recovery practices at the Denison mill from crushing through concentrate drying and packing . Special emphasis will be placed on the leaching, ion exchange and precipitation sections of the process, with consideration being given to the entire circuit. Descriptions will be given of equipment now being used and control strategies will be discussed.

Sapping and mining have constituted an important part of siege operations ever since powder came into general use in Europe. Before this period, famine was the main weapon in the hands of the besiegers, and the history of the middle ages is replete with accounts of sieges lasting two and three years. With the advent of explosives, a position impregnable to assault might be readily won by mining under, and blowing up, its defences. The natural offensive against this method of attack is to countermine and stop the attackers underground before their objective is reached. Thus developed the art of military mining. The French and British, in the Peninsular war, were adepts at this method of warfare, and the explosion of a mine and the formation of a breach were the usual preludes to the general assault of a position. In the Crimea, at Sebastopol, the British and Russians did a lot of underground fighting, as the old maps of their galleries, now in the museum at Chatham, will testify. In the siege of Port Arthur, in still later times, the Japanese and Russians were hard at it as well.

Pressure oxidation tests have been conducted by Sherritt for a refractory gold-silver project located in China. The feed contained 39 g/t Au and 970 g/t Ag; the major gold-bearing minerals were pyrite and arsenopyrite. Since the feed contained a significant amount of silver, which can be refractory to cyanide leaching after pressure oxidation due to the formation of argentojarosite, the test program included investigation of methods to enhance silver recovery. The "lime boil" process proved successful and was incorporated into the flowsheet. Gold extraction from the lime boil product solids was 95 to 98%; silver extraction was up to 94%.
