PJV Dome Mine has used some form of gravity concentration since start of milling operation in 1909 to recover free milling gold. Amalgamation and conventional jigs were first used and were replaced with the Knelson Concentrators in 1993. The Knelson concentrates produced were upgraded on a conventional shaking table prior to smelting and refining into gold bullion. In May 2002, a comprehensive review of the latest gravity recovery technology led to a piloting campaign aimed at further improving gravity recovery. The Knelson concentrates, subjected to intensive cyanide leaching in an Acacia pilot plant, were found to be amenable to intensive cyanide leaching with over 98% of the gold being dissolved within 24 hours. An Acacia Intensive Leach Reactor was successfully installed and commissioned in December 2002, to replace the shaking table. his paper describes pilot scale testing, installation, commissioning and optimization of the Acacia Intensive Leach Reactor. Also, the economic impacts on down stream processes are highlighted.

"INTRODUCTION The South Hecla mine, one of the principal mines of the Alta United Mines Co., is situated at Alta in thee Little Cottonwood mining district, about 30 miles southeasterly from Salt Lake City, Utah. The mine has produced copper, lead, zinc, gold, and silver, and is reported to have been one 'of the principal sources of this country's bismuth from 1912 to 1925. The tungsten mineral, scheelite, has been found but has not been recovered. The extreme need for these minerals during World War II prompted an examination of the property by the Bureau of Mines and resulted in an unpublished report entitled ""The South Hecla Mine, Salt Lake County, Utah"" (fig. 1).A Bureau of Mines project 3301 was initiated, and operations were started early in 1943. The primary purpose of the project was to increase substantially the reserves of bismuth and tungsten ores. The critical situation in regard to lead, copper, and zinc developed during the early stages of the operation, and the work was expanded to include the development of ores 'of these metals.An investigation of 'the Albion, Rustler, and Greeley workings adjoining the South Hecla mine was made, and this work is also described (fig. 2); ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSIn Its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each investigative project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Deep hardrock mines worldwide increasingly face rockbursts as mining depths increase. These events result from the accumulation and sudden release of stress, causing rockmass damage and posing major safety and operational challenges. This paper focuses on destress blasting as a critical strategy to mitigate rockburst hazards. Although limited practical experience exists in Swedish deep hardrock mines, international case studies demonstrate that, when well implemented, destress blasting redistributes peak stresses by promoting controlled fracturing around mining excavations. The success of such techniques is highly dependent on site-specific factors such as stress regime, rockmass brittleness, structural geology, and blast layout. Although destress blasting is especially effective in massive, brittle rock under high stress, typical conditions for strainburst prone environments, its design cannot rely solely on numerical models. Simulations can offer preliminary evaluation of stress redistribution trends and guide early design assessments but their current limitations, including sensitivity to input data and simplified fracture mechanics, mean they are best used as supplementary tools rather than final decision-makers. Field trials, supported by microseismic analysis and fracture mapping, remain essential for validation. The study critically synthesises international experiences and presents a structured framework for destress blasting design, offering practical and academic perspectives aligned with Swedish geological conditions to support safer and more efficient application in deep hardrock mines.

The U.S. economy continued to expand during 1986, although at the slowest pace since 1982 when the current business expansion began. Real gross national product (GNP) grew about 2.6%, slightly below 1985 growth but significantly below that of 1984. The continuing expansion was fueled pre-dominantly by rising personal consumption expenditures as well as growing Government purchases of goods and services. Fixed investment, although positive, failed to grow at the rate of the overall economy. The trade deficit, which increased more than 30% over the record 1985 level, continued to depress economic growth despite significant declines in the price of petroleum and the value of the dollar. On a more positive note, domestic employment continued to grow--increasing over 2 million from the 1985 level--and inflation and interest rates declined. The unemployment rate dropped slightly to 7.0%. Of direct importance to the mineral-producing industries, expenditures for consumer and producer durables as well as investment in residential construction each grew faster than the overall economy, but investment in nonresidential structures fell more than 10% from the 1985 level. The level of real capital spending declined about 3% in 1986, following strong gains in 1985 and in 1984. Capital expenditures for new plant and equipment bottomed out in the second quarter and expanded in the third and fourth quarters. The decline in the first half of the year was partially attributed to uncertainty arising from the then-proposed tax bill. Also, there was little impetus for corporations to invest in new capacity since factories were operating at less than 80% of capacity during most of the year, in part because of continued competition from imports.

STABILIZATION of the adjustment of normal consumption to normal production of world commodities is quite different from reducing production until visible surpluses are consumed. The first means restoration and maintenance of prosperity, the second means merely a temporary alleviation of a condition with the prime cause remaining uncorrected. Overproduction of foodstuffs in some sections of the world while millions starve in other sections represents not so much overproduction of foodstuffs as mal-distribution of foodstuffs. The flour mills of Washington and Oregon normally ship quantities of flour to China. Now, the wheat that would make this flour goes East instead of West. Is this overproduction, or is there something wrong that calls for study, analysis and correction? Can the plan used by the ostrich of hiding its head in. the sand get us by this present world tragedy, or must the challenge to solve this problem be met, constructively? Can we not make out of this breakdown in the world's economic system an opportunity? And use it as the stimulus for remedying the basic cause of the trouble and not content ourselves with devising temporary expedients that aim at remedying this or that of the obvious conditions, in themselves not causes at all but rather the evidence of causes, or that are the symptoms of the real trouble.

For more than 10 years coke-oven technologists have been investigating the expanding properties of coal on a scale larger than that afforded by laboratory test tubes. Koppers 4/ was among the first to realize that coals can not be differentiated satisfactorily with respect to expansion in coke ovens by the simpler test-tube methods; in his first method 80 grains of fine coal were coked in a cylinder heated from the bottom, so that the zone of fusion (plastic layer) advanced from the bottom to the top. The scale of test was too small; it has been modified by other investigators, but without significant improvement in practical application of the results. Somewhat later Koppers and Jendne 5/ experimented with a small-scale coke even, one wall of which was movable, in which the layer-coking in a coke oven could be simulated closely. This oven was heated from both sides. Their results with this oven showed a peak in the time-pressure curves near the end of the coking, period when the two plastic layers, advancing from opposite walls, meet. They also found that although the smaller oven was heated from one side only and did not show the Pressure peak characteristic of two-sided heating, it still gave results entirely too high. Russell built an oven similar to the movable-wall oven of Koppers and Jenkner and compared results obtained in it on Beckley expanding coal with these obtained on the some coal in the Altieri 7/ small-scale apparatus. Both tests were conducted at the same constant pressure, but heating was from two sides in Russell's oven and from one side in the Altieri tester. Russell found that the two types of test gave comparable results under constant pressure conditions even though the heating procedures were quite different. He showed later, however, that a "borderline" coal 8/ that contracted in the Altieri tester at constant pressure developed a peak pressure of 4 pounds per square inch in the movable-wall oven heated from both sides at constant volume. He concluded from this that testing at constant volume gave results more accurately indicative of dangerous expansion tendencies than those at constant pressure. He also found that heating from both sides in this oven gave higher pressure than heating from one side only.

"A number of silver producers have identified a need for a system to recover silver and gold from base metal flotation concentrates on site rather than sending the concentrate to third party smelters to improve mine economics. Historically intensive cyanidation has only been used for coarse gold gravity concentrates in batch machines but Gekko have applied the InLine Leach Reactor (ILR) to these difficult to leach concentrates.The ILR’s unique ability to operate at various solid to solution ratios, high mass capacity, the ability to handle fines, the use of peroxide to aid silver leach kinetics and simple operation has resulted in significant economic benefits to Hochschild PLC’s Selene and Arcata operations. This paper describes the commissioning phase of the ILR5000BA intensive cyanidation reactors on concentrates from the Selene mine at the Ares Concentrator.INTRODUCTIONIntensive leaching of high grade concentrates in gold ore treatment is now commonplace and is considered an essential feature of most gold circuits (Lane, Fountain and LeBrooy, 2008). The devices commonly used for intensive leaching (InLine Leach Reactor, Acacia Reactor, etc) are specifically designed for the typical coarse nature of the concentrate.In some of these intensive leach applications, significant amounts of silver are co-recovered with the gold. In fact, the intensive leaching conditions of 1 to 2% NaCN in solution and high dissolved oxygen levels, overcome the issue with silver’s slow dissolution rate in traditional CIL/CIP circuits and avoids the formation of insoluble silver sulphide minerals on the surface of the gold (Marsden, 2006).There are a significant number of mine operators producing silver in the form of mixed base metal sulphides flotation concentrates. Typically the mine operators are paid for the silver after processing of the concentrate by the base metal smelter whom recovers the silver during the refining process."

When I was originally invited to speak to this audience on the subject of the future supply of precious metals I was somewhat apprehensive and suggested that the Program Chairman select someone with more credentials. He declined and the results of our conversation gave me cause to reflect and recall the opportunities I have had over the years and how fortunate I have been to be associated with so many successful companies and knowledgeable people affiliated with the precious metals field. I discovered that since 1935, 1 have worked in or visited most of the gold and silver camps in the United States; have been a leaser of a gold mine in Mohave, California; have both lost and made money in the silver futures market; have worked for two of the greatest precious metals companies in the United States - Homestake Mining Company and Hecla Mining Company, have spent a considerable amount of time in precious metal related discussions with men like Don MacLaughlin, Paul Henshaw, Dick Stoehr, Abe Shoemaker, Bill Love, Phil Lindstrom, Simon Strauss, Herbert and Bunker Hunt and many others. It is those exposures and experiences that I draw onto discuss the subject at hand.

The term "Ichtnyol" is a name applied loosely to certain preparations used in pharmacy. These preparations do not occur as such in nature but are manufactured by various chemical processes. Ichthyol is the name trademarked for a product manyfactured by the Irhthyel-Gescllschaft (Cordes Hermanni & Co.) of Hamburg, Germany, and marketed in thin, country by Merck & Co., Inc., (5, 86, 87)3/. Although used in the literature rather loosely, the correctly applied word refers to the product obtained by sulphonating and then neutralizing with ammonia a distillate from the oil retorted from a certain high-sulphur bituminous shale found near the village of Seefeld in the Austrian Tyrol. Due to the fact that fossils of fish and marine animals occur in the limestone associated with the bituminous shale, these deposits have long been known as, the "lchthyolite schistc of Seefeld" ( 55) . The Greek word "ichthys"" for fish and the Latin word "oleum" for oil are the words from which the term is derived. The crude, tarry shale oil, whose distillate is the raw material for the sulphonation process, has been referred to since the Middle Ages as "Dürsten" or "Tirschen" oil, and the term "ichthyel oil" has been used occasionally in the literature to designate the retorted crude oil (92, 93, 106, 117). The first application of the name "Ichthyol" to a particular product is credited to Schröter (35, 129). Various names for products manufactured by sulphonating bituminous distillates have been coined, and in some of these names the root from the word ichthys has been retained. Some of these names can be found in New and Nonofficial Remedies under the heading, Sulphoichthyolate Preparation, and Substitutes (5).

Sublevel open stoping is a low-cost method that has been successfully employed in many large underground mining operations. Where ore body characteristics are suitable, extensive mechanization and the use of large-scale stoping techniques can considerably reduce operating costs. However, careful long-term planning of mine layouts and large capital commitments in development are required prior to production. Implementing precise mine design procedures and carefully controlling operations can result in considerable benefits. This article describes methods to achieve these objectives based largely on mining operations at Mount Isa, where sublevel open stoping has been used since 1932. Ore won by this method accounted for a very large percentage of the total tonnage produced at Mount Isa. Major costs associated with sublevel open stoping can be classified as drilling, explosives and charging, and LHD costs. In this article, analyses of these costs are made with particular reference to stope design. Parameters such as burden, drill hole diameter, explosive density, specific charge, etc., are considered in establishing the interrelationship of unit operating costs, as well as total costs of sublevel open stoping.

Until quite recently-practically up to the present time-all but an insignificant amount of the copper produced in Canada was shipped abroad in the form of ore, matte, blister, etc., there to undergo the further treatment necessary to bring it to the refined state in which it is required by fabricators of copper. Consequently, Canadian manufacturers were forced to import nearly all the copper required in their business; and a considerable portion of the ultimate value to be derived from a Canadian raw material was lost to the country of its origin. In the early days of Canadian copper mining, when both the production and consumption of copper in Canada were much smaller than now, such a condition of affairs was perhaps economically unavoidable, and, in any case, was not a matte~ of sufficient importance to attract general attention. Later on, however, when there had been large and rapid increases both in the production and consumption of copper in Canada, it formed the basis of much adverse criticism, deserved or not, of producers of Canadian copper-criticism that became intensified during the war and subsequent years. Happily, the chief grounds of complaint have now been removed, and there are today copper refineries in Canada, either operating or under construction, that are capable, in the aggregate, of turning out amounts of refined copper greatly in excess of any indicated Canadian consumption.

Mercury has been used by mankind since prehistoric times. It has been, and is now, widely used in industry and medicine and has unique properties which make direct substitution difficult or impossible. At present its principal uses are for electrical apparatus, control instruments, electrolytic soda preparation, mildew-proofing paints, pesticides, and medical and dental preparations. Deposits of mercury are less common than those of other base and precious metals, but some of the deposits are very large and have been ample to meet the world's past demands. The price of mercury has had many sharp fluctuations, but in general, the limited number of producers has resulted in a more stable price structure than that of many other commodities. The United States has been one of the main producers of mercury, and from 1850 to 1961 produced 3,247,704 flasks. Yearly production since World War I1 has varied from 4,535 to 38,067 flasks. An estimate of domestic resources of mercury producible at various price ranges was prepared for each mercury mine by combining specific knowledge of mercury mineralization with estimates of potential, based on geologic information and past production history. The sum of the individual estimates for each price range is shown in a table. A parallel estimate of nationwide production potential was made from a study of past price and production relationships. These were analyzed by plotting yearly production figures against the previous year's price, expressed in dollars of constant purchasing power. An equation was fitted to the data by mathematical means and was used to extend the curve into areas of higher than historic prices. Potential production rates at various price levels were taken from this graph. The estimated yearly production rates were used to make an estimate of total potential based on the premise that production rates and reserves have a proportionate relationship. The rate of developing mercury reserves during the period from January 1944 to January 1962 is considered, and it is shown that if this rate can be continued, the mercury resources of the United States, at a constant dollar price of $500 per flask, are adequate to support a production of 60,000 flasks per year for 30 or more years. This publication contains a history and description of the mercury industry in every State which has had production and individual descriptions of all mercury properties which have reported significant production. Accompanying tables give the important facts about all known mercury occurrences.

Failure of the mine floor supporting coal pillars frequently occurs when the subcoal strata include "underclays" or other low strength strata. The failure process has been studied to define the response of these materials to applied coal pillar loads and to determine the applicability of bearing capacity analysis to evaluate unsafe conditions. The study has been accomplished through an investigation of both the intact and insitu geotechnical properties of the subcoal strata and through the installation of floor movement monitoring instrumentation. The results of these studies have indicated that both the shear strength of the underclay and the stratigraphy of the subcoal strata must be considered in the analysis. The shear strength was the major controlling factor determining the ultimate load carrying ability of the materials, but the thickness and stratigraphic position of the weak layers influenced the mechanism of the failure process. The methods of bearing capacity analysis were used to define pillar stability that included provisions for taking into consideration a two-layer system. Conditions assumed for a coal mine where a weak underclay overlies firmer strata. The results of the analysis compared very well with observed mine conditions, indicating marginal conditions in areas of the mine which later experienced pillar support failure. In addition, a "heave factor" was derived to predict potentially unstable floor conditions in the mines studied in detail.

In this paper it is argued that we are entering a new mining era, based on considerably more challenging orebodies as we rapidly expand minerals production by exploiting previously uneconomic deposits. Rapidly increasing production costs cannot be sustained by continually increasing commodity prices, as illustrated by the recent downturn in the industry.Driven by reduction in grade, requiring the processing of 50 to 100 per cent more ore to recover the same amount of metal, often accompanied by finer grain structure - necessitating a finer product size and more challenging recovery - the productivity of the mining industry is dropping in real terms. The author suggests that tweaking current technologies and relying on economies of scale will not turn the industry around, but rather a switch to considerably more efficient processing is required.It is imperative to utilise the properties of the orebody, especially in terms of variability, in revolutionising our processing techniques. Our new mantra may be æselective mass mining with flexible processingÆ. This paper explores how this may be implemented using current technology and equipment in order to change the cost profile of the new mining industry. Orebody knowledge, based on the underlying process drivers, rather than proxies, is required. These properties and their variability will need to be propagated into the orebody through utilising the geological data rather than smoothing block averages, which destroys information on variability.Novel flexible circuit designs are presented that can respond to a wide variability in ore properties and throughput requirements in order to slash processing costs and energy utilisation, while enhancing overall recovery. The success of these circuits will be based on an ability to predict at both design stage and in everyday processing the variable ore properties, which is dependent upon reliable orebody knowledge that caries variability and underlying processing properties.CITATION:Powell, M S, 2013. Much progress has been made in understanding the forward process for blast vibration simulation: that is, how to create a resultant seismogram from an empirically determined seed waveform. What has not been successfully investigated to date is the reverse process: Determining the contribution of each borehole to the resultant seismogram. It might seem that these should be two sides of the same coin, but the reverse process is much more complicated. That is because the source, geological path, and receiver contributions must be unraveled and then dissected. If that can be done, a relationship can be developed between the seismic source properties and the explosive interaction with the surrounding rock. This paper presents a first step in the unraveling process, through analysis of blast seismograms using wavelet transforms.
