"Kiena has been committed to developing a fresh management and employee relations approach since the commencement of production in 1981. The functional organizational structure encourages joint participation and commitment on the part of all employees to common goals in safety and production. The results over the last four years have been extraordinary. Kiena won the John T. Ryan Canada Trophy for 1983 for its safety record and has experienced a steadily increasing productivity through the application of new mining equipment and technology in the hands of a well-trained and motivated team of employees.This paper serves to highlight the fact that productivity, safetyand technical innovation are closely linked to employee participationand involvement which are likely to be the key to theCanadian mining industry's survival in the years ahead.This presentation follows up on an earlier unpublished paper, given at the 84th Annual Meeting of CIM in Quebec City in April, 1982, which discussed the philosophy and the planning which took place before implementation of the management and employee relations system at Kiena. This present paper reviews and expands on material given in the earlier work. IntroductionThe mining industry, which has always been considered as rather conservative in its approach, has experienced with some regularity, cyclical periods related to metal prices. These cycles, previously foreseeable to some extent have become less coherent over recent years during which time the industry has had to face fierce international competition. The issue to productivity is without doubt the major concern of the mining industry in Canada today and it represents the greatest challenge facing us during the present decade. Developments that have been made in mining technology over the precious two decades have failed to completely produce the significant advancements in higher over-all productivity that were expected."

SOME notes on the works of the Electrolytic Refining and Smelting Company of Australia will no doubt be of interest to members of the Institute, more especially as much of the work is new to Australasia. As many of the members who may read this paper have not been in a position to visit works of this kind, and are consequently not thoroughly acquainted with all the operations carried on, the author has taken the liberty, in some cases, to enter into explanation which would otherwise be unnecessary. The works are situated at Port Kembla (New South Wales), about fifty miles south of Sydney, and are approachable both by rail and water. The Government has recently built a low-level jetty upwards of five hundred feet long, and intends installing at an early date an electrically operated portable crane to facilitate the handling of material to and from the boats. This will mean: a considerable reduction in the length of time that boats are laid up at the jetty. There are also under construction two breakwaters, which, when complete, will materially assist shipping operation...

This paper is a retrospective on the development, application, and enhancement of the LaModel program from a personal perspective. The narrative starts with an explanation of the objectives behind the original development of the program and then introduces some of the unique and very practical features of the program. Next, a demonstration of how LaModel was advantageously used to model stresses and displacements in a multiple-seam mining situation with highly variable topography is presented. This is followed by the details of a number of the major enhancements and expansions of the program over the years. A back-analysis of the Crandall Canyon Mine collapse is then briefly presented, along with the associated development of a recommended calibration procedure for the critical input parameters to LaModel. Finally, some of the present research areas are briefly described, and future enhancements are introduced.

The number of major coal-mine explosions occurring annually in the United States is decreasing, due mainly to fuller recognition of explosion hazards in coal mines and knowledge of methods to prevent them, which can be attributed largely to the dissemination of information by the United States Bureau of Mines, State departments of mines, and other coal-mining agencies. Conditions vary considerably from one coal field to another; consequently, outstanding causes of and methods of combatting explosions vary, also. The Safety Division of the United States Bureau of Mines is making a critical study of coal-mine explosions in the various coal-mining States, and an analysis of the results is published as each study is finished. It is believed that, with completion of the series enough information will be at hand which, if applied, will prevent all coal-mine explosions. This paper outlines a unique case of the development of strategies to reduce ventilation and heating costs in Konsuln iron ore mine in northern Sweden. The mine, located just south of Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag’s Kiruna iron ore mine, was developed as a test mine from 2018-2020 for the Sustainable Underground Mining (SUM) project. Besides functioning as a test mine, Konsuln also contributes to ore production. The existing mine ventilation system was designed for the current production rate of 0.8 million tons per annum (Mtpa). There is a plan to increase this rate to between 1.8 and 2.0 Mtpa.

In 1948 the United States became a net importer of oil. Coupled with an unprecedented domestic production of 5,900,000 barrels daily, imports approximating 500,000 barrels made available a total supply of 6,400,000 barrels a day. Thus, by a herculean effort, the oil industry was able to meet an extraordinary demand at home and, in addition, to ship abroad almost 460,000 barrels daily of petroleum and products. The country’s oil position now differs greatly from that prevailing at the beginning of World War II. Then, actual oil production averaged about 4 million barrels a day, and productive capacity probably was greater than 5 million barrels a day. As the demand of the military and industrial machine grew with the rising tempo of the drive toward victory, the United States not only met its own needs but produced about two-thirds of the total oil requirements of the Allied Nations, excluding Russia. As a people, we can be deeply grateful that the Nation’s petroleum resources were adequate and sufficiently developed to support such a tremendous effort. Even in those critical hours when immediate needs were the paramount issues, a prudent Congress paused to contemplate the importance of an assured long-term supply of liquid fuels. From these deliberations came the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act of 1944, which authorized research and development work on new sources of oil – coal, oil shale, and agricultural and forestry products. Since World War II, a civilian demand for 6 million barrels of petroleum products has become the order of the day. By drilling as many as 39,000 new wells a year, the production rate has increased enough to meet domestic requirements by a bare margin. Some imports were necessary, however, to fill both domestic and foreign demands, and these doubtless will increase. Is this policy of exploration within the United States and the development of oil in foreign countries adequate insurance for the fulfillment of our future national needs? This question has two aspects – one purely civilian and economic in character and the other significant from the standpoint of our national defense. There are now approximately 4,000 producing oil fields in this country. At first thought, it would appear that production could decline in a considerable number of these fields without materially affecting the overall daily output. However, 48 percent of the oil comes from only 111 major fields which contain 60 percent of the total proved domestic reserves. It is apparent, then, that the flow from large fields – having proved reserves of 100 million barrels or more each – must be sustained if daily production is to be kept at the present levels. Essentially, this means that new major fields must be discovered about as rapidly, or perhaps more rapidly, than the older ones lose productive capacity. From 1940 through 1947, only eight major fields with estimated reserves of more than 100 million barrels each were discovered and proved – an average of one such field a year. The total estimated reserve of these eight fields was less than 1 year’s supply at the present rate of use. As drilling continues, some existing fields ultimately will prove reserves larger than those now known. Without a pronounced increase in the number of major discoveries, however, the prospects for increasing our present productive level are not encouraging. Any gap that appears between domestic productive capacity and demand could be filled with supplies from proved oil resources abroad. Detailed regional geophysical and geochemical surveys, ground surveys and drilling were undertaken to follow-up the federal-provincial Uranium Reconnaissance Program (URP) over the 27,OOO-km2 Kasmere-Munroe area in northwestern Manitoba. An analysis of the URP data showed a fair correlation between the regional airborne radiometric results and lake-bottom geochemical results, both of which also correlated with the regional geology. More detailed surveys defined anomalies with greater precision within the broad zones outlined by the URP. The ground follow-up indicated that URP anomalies can be caused by varying degrees of uranium concentration in the rocks. Mineralization of interest was found in leucogranites at several locations within the survey area. Anomalous uranium concentrations were also found in coarse pegmatites and Hudsonian granitic intrusions. It can be concluded that large-scale regional surveys can be followed up in relatively short periods of time to yield meaningful results if a properly planned exploration sequence is employed, each stage of which successively narrows the area of interest.

A rock mass classification system has been developed for recommending drift support requirements in block caving mines. This development follows a two-year program incorporating field observations of support practice and performance in rocks of different classes, at several U. S. block caving mines. Popular rock mass classification systems presently in use for tunneling were applied at the various field sites; and were evaluated for conformance with caving mine support requirements and for general utility to caving mine operations. The developed system (MBR System) accepts readily-obtainable engineering and geologic data to yield a rational estimate of support requirements. The background and development of the MBR system is described in this report (Volume I). The use of the system is given in the Manual, a separate volume (Volume II).

Tin mining on Seward Peninsula, Alaska, has been intermittently active since the early 1900's. Most of the recorded production (over 2,200 short tons of metallic tin) has been obtained from placer deposits, but recent production also has resulted from development of lode deposits associated with intrusive rocks occurring in the western part of the peninsula. Generally, the lode deposits containing tin minerals (principally cassiterite) are found in dikes, in granite masses, and in silicate zones in limestone overlying the granite. Both the placer and lode deposits have been of considerable strategic interest to the Government because of the almost total absence of a domestic supply of tin. The most important tin-lode deposit discovered to date is in the Cassiterite dike at the Lost River mine, on Cassiterite Creek about 85 miles northwest of Nome. This highly altered, rhyolite porphyry dike averages 12 feet in thickness, strikes N. 75° to 85° E., and dips steeply to the south; it can be traced on the surface for about 8,000 feet. Throughout its explored length of about 2,200 feet the dike everywhere contains some tin and tungsten in veinlets and disseminations; economic concentration of the are minerals, however, is confined to definite shoots. The ore minerals include cassiterite, stannite, hulsite, paigeite, wolframite, scheelite, and base-metal sulfides; gangue minerals include fluorite, boron silicates, and lithium-bearing minerals. Some ore minerals also occur in the numerous other dikes and in the granite and intruded limestone in and adjacent to the mine.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration?s (MSHA) Roof Control Division (RCD) collects a variety of geological and engineering information pertaining to mining conditions in surface and underground mines throughout the United States. Recently, lineament analyses, trends of geologic structures, and inferred stress directions based on mapping at mines with problematic ground conditions, have been integrated into a GIS. The incorporation of different kinds of information into the same geographic coordinates and map projection, placed on digital geologic maps, allows site specific data to be evaluated in a regional geospatial context, identifying trends in the orientation of horizontal stress or patterns of structural geologic features. As more information is collected, the GIS will evolve as a tool for district- and basin-wide evaluations of controls on ground instability, and may evolve into a predictive tool for some kinds of geologic hazards. In addition to the geologic and geotechnical evaluations, the GIS also serves as a searchable database of previous mine investigations. The database can be searched for a variety of criteria, and the results displayed in real geographic coordinates to find the locations of previously visited mines or to evaluate mine fatality and injury data. This not only allows old reports to be found, but also places the information in a geospatial context with respect to neighboring mines or geographic areas. The GIS also has the capability to serve as a digital mine map repository, where maps can be stored in digital, georeferenced format for display in relation to each other and various themes of interest. This allows evaluation of multiple seam mining interactions and proximity to other mines, and on a national level could serve as an abandoned mine map database.

"In the Hydrometallurgical processes, the presence of the so-called "crud" is a constant challenge in solvent extraction. Crud is a stable emulsion which forms along the interface between the aqueous and organic phase. The spread is influenced by the following parameters: first, wind blows the dust and impurities into the open sedimentation tanks. Second, the undissolved solids such as sand transported in the PLS causing problems in conjunction with incorrect agitator design.The crud fraction can decisively impact the efficiency of the hydrometallurgical extraction because the phase interface can constitute a large fraction and the sedimentation tanks cannot react flexibly to it. In the downstream process of the series-connected sedimentation tanks, they are thus all contaminated with crud. At the same time, the necessary mass transport is significantly impeded at the phase boundary between organic phase and aqueous phase due to the crud formation.The transfer of the organic phase into the electrolysis cell can result in a "burnout" of the cathode. The carryover of this electrolyte into the extraction can cause problems with the pH regulation. The carry-over of the organic components into the raffinate also leads to contamination of the leaching circuit. The continuous treatment of the crud with a 3-phase decanter centrifuge is extremely effective in combating this problem. This technology splits all three phases from each other and they are consequently continuously separated. All subsequent process steps exhibit a stable, uniform effectiveness. The main advantage for the customer is that fluctuations in the process are eliminated and the organic phase can be recirculated back to the extraction. The recycling of the solvent alone justifies the investment in less than 6 months as examples from South Africa and Chile show.To operate solvent recovery in daily operation fully automated online at the optimum limit, the decanter centrifuge is equipped with a concentration-dependent pond adjustment called DControl® by this means, we can guarantee our customers the maximum possible solvent recovery and minimize the solvent costs in this process step. This system is presented in detail in this paper."

"This article explains the ways in which investment on mining infrastructure is a geopolitical issue. It discusses the effect of installing sufficient infra structure to get the product to the world market, and argues that there is a risk involved in depending on traditional suppliers who wish to invest in the infrastructure. It explains how to make a distinction between dedicated purpose infrastructure and general use infrastructure by examining the positions of the main actors in mining projects. It argues that these positions can not be understood as analogous to projects in developed countries. To conclude, infrastructure is a crucial link in the supply chain to market but the relative size of such projects in relation to the economy means that investors decisions in developing countries have quite different implications from those in developed countries."

Conventional ground support in accordance with latest state-of-the-art considers proper preparation of geotechnical investigation, structural design, observation during construction and fair risk sharing documents. Depending on the ground, there are different means and methods, reflecting different experiences. The paper is presenting ground support concepts, as mostly used in Europe during the past three decades. It discusses the use of anchors as well as the use of steel arches respectively combinations. It also discusses different applications of plain shotcrete, respectively fibre reinforced shotcrete. As excavation sequence is a major input to create the ground arch, the paper discusses also criteria to create closed ring conditions. Finally deformation criteria will be presented with case histories in order to control stability of the structure.

As natural gas is a waning resource in many places, increased interest has attached to the use of gas for the manufacture of carbon black. Because of a large number of requests for information on the subject, the Bureau of Mines has undertaken a detailed study of the carbon-black industry, covering the mechanical details of commercial methods, with the purpose of increasing the recovery of carbon black by such processes. A study has been undertaken of the economic factors governing the carbon-black industry, the uses and properties of carbon black, the dE)velopment of more Itccurate methods of testing carbon black, microscopic examination of different grades of black, physicochemical study of methods' of mQ.nufacture now in use, and research on new methods of manufacture. Part I of this paper covers the engineering and economic side of the industry; the other phases of the investigation which have been under the direction of G. St. J. Perrott, of the Pittsburgh station.of the United States Bureau of Mines, are discussed in Part II.

In 1972, the Bureau of Mines of the U. S. Department of the Interior commissioned the development and design of a Simulator for research and testing of mine roof supports used in long-wall mining. The purpose of the Simulator is to reproduce forces and displacements of a section of a mine roof in contact with one or more supports. This report is an account of the design process that resulted in the final configuration of the Simulator presented here. It includes discussions of engineering considerations that led to major changes in important details of the Simulator. These changes, however, did not substantially alter the basic design originally proposed, except for the elimination of certain originally-specified features that were adjudged as insufficiently cost-effective by both the Bureau of Mines and the design agent at an intermediate stage of the design.

The Olympic Dam iron-oxide copper-gold (IOCG) uranium-silver deposit is the largest publicly declared uranium, fifth largest copper and third largest gold resource. Currently, the operation consists of an underground mine and integrated processing plant. Uranium is produced from leaching of flotation tailings and is a co-product to copper cathode with by-product gold and silver bullion. The Olympic Dam geometallurgy team began studying ore from the Southern Mine Area (SMA) in 2006 and soon discovered uranium behaviour was far more variable than the behaviour in the Northern Mine Area, which had been mined from the start of the operation in 1988. The primary objective of Olympic Dam geometallurgy is to develop metallurgical performance predictors that reliably describe the process performance of different ore types and distribute these into the resource block model for use as a fundamental input into mine planning. The nature of the uranium mineralisation (compositionally and texturally complex and highly variable) meant that classic mineralogy techniques alone could not provide the resolution required for prediction of uranium extraction. However, the combination of quantitative mineralogy, results from laboratory-scale leach tests and modelling within the geometallurgy program has enabled prediction of both uranium flotation recovery (via association with sulphides) and uranium leach extraction, including at variable leach conditions. These stope-based predictions have supported trade-off decisions between operating costs and uranium revenue, and have predicted the changing recovery as the mining operations have moved into the Southern Mine Area in recent years.

"Ore grades are declining and getting more complex around the world which not only complicate the ore processing but also produce new type of requirements to manage the produce waste streams. One specifically problematic and increasingly identified element in waste streams produced in mining and metallurgy is arsenic.Arsenic is a compound that has no significant market value, but that needs to be removed from ores, concentrates and other process streams because of environmental or process technical reasons. One example of a removal process is partial roasting of high-As sulfide concentrates, originally developed by Outotec. In this process the arsenic is volatilized in the gas phase and thus separated from the solid material, i.e. the calcine. If the arsenic is recovered by wet methods the process gas is quenched and all arsenic needs to be stabilized in the effluent treatment plant.Outotec has developed ferric arsenate precipitation as a method to produce stabile arsenic residues from wet gas cleaning effluents. Iron based precipitates, when correctly produced, can meet typical landfill criteria measured with different types of leaching methods meant for characterizing the arsenic dissolution behavior from the precipitates.In this paper partial roasting of sulfide concentrates with arsenic volatilization in combination with ferric arsenate precipitation is discussed from the perspective of producing wastes that can meet the stability requirements set by common leaching tests methods, TCLP and CEN. These leaching test methods set the normative landfill requirements for most operations generating arsenic containing wastes. A typical flow sheet of Outotec® Ferric arsenate process is discussed with results showing the importance of correct process control and sequence on producing arsenic containing waste that can meet the landfill disposal requirements."

The paper shares programs that presently use the CDC PLATO System to train individuals in industry. A short history of PLATO development; as a training system is presented with reflection on the major training trends being used to improve training effectiveness. A discussion is offered to describe the benefits of using a system for individualizing instruction. An introduction; is offered showing how one can recognize' individual differences, with an explanation of how the strengths of a computer are used to deliver and manage the training. Simulations of hazardous processes are shown to be one of the most effective uses of the computer for training.
