"In order to improve the nickel concentrate thickener operation at Raglan Mine, two pulp deaeration cyclones were installed. These units obtained from Outotec Pty Ltd, also called the FrothBuster®, have been in continuous operation since mid-October 2006. The primary objective of the de-aeration cyclones is to lower the solids content in the thickener overflow by de-aerating the concentrate pulp before it enters the concentrate thickener. This dearated slurry should help decrease the nickel particle losses that report to the thickener overflow because of the flotation effect within the thickener.Optimizing the de-aeration cyclones has been a slow and ongoing process, however, initial testing is encouraging. The latest test results indicate a 50 % reduction (0.070 to 0.035 % solids) in nickel losses to the concentrate thickener overflow resulting in an additional $350,000 in annual revenues.This paper will present an overview of installing the de-aeration cyclones within a limited space, as well as the preliminary commissioning and testing challenges. This paper will also discuss the most recent concentrate thickener operating results since the de-aeration units were installed.INTRODUCTIONThe Xstrata Nickel Raglan Concentrator, located at the northern limit of Quebec’s Nunavik Region has been in production since 1997. In early 2002, the concentrator implemented the Zero Process Water Discharge (ZPWD) project to recycle the process water to decrease fresh water consumption and reduce discharges to the environment. Due to this initiative, the chemistry of the process water changed significantly resulting in flotation concentrate streams, which were very frothy and difficult to manage. This phenomenon has resulted in operational challenges in many areas of the concentrator including slurry pumping, flow measurement and concentrate thickening.In October 2005, the Raglan Mine underwent a conversion from an AG mill to a SAG mill operation in order to increase throughput and to optimize key process areas. As part of this project, the first two North American pulp de-aeration (FrothBuster®) units from Outotec were installed to improve the operation of the concentrate thickener. The primary objective of the deaeration technology was to lower the solids content in the thickener overflow by de-aerating the concentrate thickener feed pulp. This in turn was to reduce the froth, which accumulates on the thickener surface, and more importantly reduce valuable nickel losses to the thickener overflow because of the flotation effect within the thickener."

The sudden, violent collapse of large areas of room-and-pillar mines poses a special hazard to miners and mine operators. This type of failure, termed a "Cascading Pillar Failure" (CPF), occurs when one pillar in a mine layout fails transfering its load to neighboring pillars causing them to fail, and so forth. Recent examples of this kind of failure in coal, metal and nonmetal mines in the U.S. are documented. Mining engineers can limit the danger posed by these failures through improved mine design practices. Whether failure occurs in a slow, nonviolent manner or in a rapid, violent manner is governed by the local mine stiffness stability criterion. This stability criterion is used as the basis for three design approaches to control cascading pillar failure in room-and-pillar mines, namely, the containment approach, the prevention approach, and the full extraction mining approach. These design approaches are illustrated with practical examples for coal mining.

"Placer Dome - Campbell Mine is a gold mine located at Balmertown in the Red Lake District of North Western Ontario. During the last 50 years, the mine has produced over ten million ounces of gold.A change in ball mill grinding media was made in August 1998 from 1.5” diameter forged balls to 1.5” diameter, 18% chrome balls. This was done to reduce grinding media consumption and to potentially help flotation performance.A marked ball test done in September-October 1999 showed that, of the alloys tested, 18% chrome was the optimum for the ore at Campbell Mine. The test showed that consumption of chrome balls should be 3 times less than forged balls.In December 1999, the ball size was increased from 1.5” to 2” in an effort to reduce the amount of oversize rock discharging from the ball mill. This change in size was successful.Grinding media consumption for the ball mill decreased 73% from 1.20 kg/tonne before the use of chrome balls to 0.327 kg/tonne after the use of chrome balls. This clearly indicates that, for the ore at Campbell Mine, there is significant savings in grinding media by using chrome.Grinding ball costs were reduced by 59% from $O.88/tonne of ore milled to $0.36/tonne of ore milled representing a saving of $298,000 per year. This also clearly indicates that using chrome balls is a benefit at Campbell Mine.Test work to show that chrome grinding media is beneficial to flotation has been inconclusive so far but is still ongoing.No tests have been done to see if there would be a benefit with an even higher chrome percentage in the grinding media. In the years 1850 to 1923, the United States produced 2,426,000 flasks- (73,600 metric tons) of quicksilver worth $120,500,000. California yielded 2,195,000 flasks of this total; the remainder came from Texas, Oregon, Nevada, and A.rizona. Most of this metal has been extracted from low-grade ores, those containing less than 0.5 per cent mercury or 10 pounds per ton. The finished product or " virgin metal" is made at the mine and shipped in flasks. Quicksilver is unique in being the only metal that is liquid at ordinary temperature. Because of this and other physical and chemical properties, it is perhaps more indispensable to industry than any other metal. On the other hand, the quicksilver industry of the world is of vanishing significance" when compared to the major mineral industries with respect to quantity and value of product, capital invested, or the number of men employed. The peculiar value of quicksilver is due to the fact that in some of its applications no substitute is available and in others the substitutes would be unsatisfactory or extremely expensive. Scarcely a branch of science or industry fails to make some use of mercury or its compounds. As a detonator for explosives, mercury fulminate holds first place and in safety and reliability could be replaced only by the highly expensive silver fulminate.t vThrough its use in detonators and in the metallurgy of the precious metals quicksilver is of special importance to mining. In medicine,in the manufacture of electrical apparatus, the production of pigments and antifouling paints, and the general field of experimental science quicksilver is equally indispensable.

Between February and August of 1986, Dr Alfred Petrick visited New Zealand sponsored under a Fulbright grant administered by the New Zealand-United States Educational Foundation. The grant supported a research project completed by Dr Petrick having as an objective, the preparation of a preliminary economic evaluation of the mining of six Otago lignite deposits as a source of energy for steam power generation or in liquid fuels. The research is limited to consideration of preliminary geological and engineering data on the six deposits and to the time constraints of the Fulbright visit. This paper is a summary of the final Fulbright report. The complete report including the listings of the computer programs is available from the Otago School of Mines.

The coke analogue is a new research tool that has been developed to quantify and characterize the effect minerals in coke have on coke reactivity. The analogue material is made from a number of different carbon or carbon containing materials and minerals to in part replicate real industrial coke’s reactivity behavior. Elucidation of the effects of minerals on coke reactivity has proved difficult due to the complex and heterogeneous nature of industrial coke and the potential non-additive effects of minerals on coke reactivity. The coke analogue addresses this complexity and heterogeneity through control of its mineralogy, mineral size and mineral dispersion through the analogue, porosity and carbon structures. Initial studies using the analogue were focused on coke dissolution kinetics in liquid iron but recent work has focused in characterization of its porosity, carbon structure and rate of reaction.

"The main purpose in the compilation of accident statistics is to reveal conditions that may result in injury to persons or property so that remedial measures may be applied. For practical reasons it is usually found necessary to restrict inquiry to conditions which actually have caused personal injury, and to omit those which nay, but have not yet, resulted in damage, Fortunately or unfortunately, there is a sufficient number of the former to indicate the existence of hazards so numerous as to require all of the attention which the industry can devote to the subject.Two years ago, the Bureau of 'mines, in cooperation with the National Safety Council, undertook an intensive campaign to obtain more complete and satisfactory information regarding mine accidents than had theretofore been available. Since 1911 the bureau had been receiving annual summaries from all companies operating metal mines, showing, in a general way, the number and causes of accidents that occurred during the preceding year and the number of men employed at the mines. Monthly summaries of fatal accidents at coal mines were received from the state inspectors, showing the number of deaths attributed to each of 22 main causes of accidents, Information for individual coal mines was not furnished.While this information, nation-wide in scope, is indispensable because it epitomizes the progress or retrogression in the industry as a whole, and serves as a background of specialized studies, yet certain classes of acci¬dents, for example, those that are more or less peculiar to specific districts or mines, require an analysis in greater detail than is possible on the sole basis afforded by the annual summaries.The need for more specific information was realized some years ago in the State of Pennsylvania in connection with the administration of the workmen's compensation law, The mining industry is well acquainted with the val¬uable studies of accidents, particularly nonfatal accidents, in the mines of that State being conducted by Mr. Rush N. Hosier."

This paper shows the usefulness of geostatistical conditional simulation combined with the quantification of sampling errors obtained from the analyses of fundamental errors ? validated from duplicate data ? to assess the relevance of the quality and quantity of the information, for short-term mine planning purposes. Traditional blast-hole drilling equipment has been designed for efficient drilling, but not for obtaining high-quality samples. Furthermore, blast-hole sampling interferes with production, and thus usually produces poor-quality results. These results are the basis of short-term plans, where the grades of selective mining units are estimated and used for distinguishing between ore and waste. Under these conditions, misclassification (ore blocks sent to the waste dump and waste blocks processed at the plant) is inevitable, leading to significant hidden losses that can amount to millions of dollars per annum. Reverse circulation drilling with the latest automated sampling technology improves significantly the quality of the information used for short-term planning, and thus reduces misclassification, improving the financial returns of the operation. In this paper, we present the general methodology for assessing the effect of poor blast-hole sampling, as compared to advanced reverse circulation drilling grids at several spacings, in order to arrive at the most appropriate grid for short-term planning. This plan can be prepared well in advance using several additional variables that are usually not available when the plan is based on blast-hole samples. Furthermore, blending options can be analysed in order to optimize plant recovery, minimize the use of sulphuric acid, etc. Three case studies are presented, namely a typical porphyry copper deposit, an exotic oxide copper deposit, and a complex gold deposit, where mineralization is controlled by structures and lithology. This paper shows that in all cases, advanced reverse circulation drilling grids provide good-quality information that, coupled with the use of geostatistics for short-term mine planning, significantly improve the financial returns of the operation.

"The toxicity reduction of emissions from two diesel engines by the emulsification of water into fuel oil was investigated to determine the applicability of such systems to underground mining machinery. . The engines studied were: 1) the Deut; F6L7J4, four-stroke, air-cooled, 6-cylinder, V-configuration, indirect-injection (IDl) engine, and 2) the Detroit Deisel Allison Division 8V7JN, two-stroke, water-cooled, 8-cylinder, V-configuration, direct-injection (Dl) engine.The application of emulsified fuel treatment to the two-stroke engine did not prove to be practicable. In the case of the Deutz engine, however, substantial benefit resulted. For a modest J5 per cent water content in the fuel and an injection timing of24° BTDC, approximate reductions of40 per cent in the concentrations of both particulate matter and nitric oxide (NO) were produced. These reductions were accompanied by insignificant changes in other toxic constituents. The net result was an approximate 30 per cent reduction in the over-all exhaust toxicity for typical LHD operation as assessed by the Health Effects Index criterion. This toxicity reduction represents a significant advance from the points of view of an improved underground environment and/or reduced ventilation costs."

Indonesia has enormous mineral resources. Its population of more than 180 million people inhabit most of the more than 13,000 islands. The country is becoming a significant economic power in Southeast Asia. Indonesia is the largest Muslim country in the world. Java, its largest island, is the most densely populated area. The country's diversity is its strength. However, as only an estimated 16 million inhabitants speak bahasa Indonesia as the first language, communication problems endure. Although burdened with large debts, Indonesia has been able to service the debts better than most developing nations. This has given it high credibility and, with increasing frequency, creditor nations compete to provide Indonesia loans with the most the most favorable financial terms. Recent rising prices of petroleum crude has further improved Indonesia's economic status. It maintains a policy of stable oil prices that it promotes in OPEC, of which it is an influential member. As a result, Indonesia is becoming increasingly attractive to foreign investors. The South East Consortium for International Development (SECID) is made up of 34 universities in the southeastern US and Indonesian partners Lembaga Afiliasi Penelitian dan Industri (LAPI) of the Institute of Technology in Bandung, West Java. SECID bid successfully against international competition to develop new academic programs and campus for the Sriwijaya University UNSRI) in Palembang, South Sumara. Base Metal (Cu, Ni, Mo, Zn, Co etc.) analysis traditionally has been very slow in conventional analytical laboratories which can lead to additional costs being incurred in waiting time of drill rigs or mining excessively off-reef. Recent developments in the automation of analytical laboratories now allow for very rapid turn-around times for base metal analytical data which can help reduce such costs as well as reduce the unit costs of the analyses themselves. 2.0 CONVENTIONAL ANALYTICAL LABORATORY PRACTICE Conventional analytical laboratories are necessarily are very manual. Sample preparation is slow and laborious, samples are moved from stage to stage manually and, typically, all samples are processed in batches so a sample which is the first to be, say, milled has to wait for the complete milling of the batch before it advances to the next stage eg. mixed with wax prior to pelletising for XRF analysis. Inevitably this results in long sample data turn-around times for laboratories handling large numbers of samples. Manual sample preparation can only be accelerated by increasing staff which increases costs and can lead to additional errors being introduced. Cleaning of sample preparation equipment, eg. crushers and mills, between samples is essential to avoid cross-contamination between samples and this is slow and labour-intensive. In manual sample preparation the correct sample numbers staying with the samples is totally dependent on the efficiency of laboratory operators. It is extremely difficult to detect when errors have occurred due to the switching of sample numbers during the sample preparation stages. Running duplicates and QC samples at best is only partially successful in detecting when sample number switching errors have occurred. Errors of this nature and cross-contamination problems due to incomplete cleaning of sample preparation equipment tend to occur when laboratories are working at pressure due to high sample numbers and when supervisors are not present during 24/7 laboratory operations which is often required on plant process control laboratories. These problems are common to all conventional analytical laboratories and their magnitude is dependent on the level of control and efficiency of QC systems practised by individual laboratories. The disadvantages of conventional manual analytical laboratories can be summarized as follows:- 1. Labour-intensive which is costly especially when multiple shifts have to be used during 24/7 operations.

The Multiple Unit Continuous Haulage (MUCH) System was designed to provide the capacity to continuously convey coal from the mining machine to the main haulage belt. The MUCH System has an operator who steers the lead vehicle, ever following the mining machine. All the remaining vehicles follow the path of the lead vehicle, with their conveyors automatically lining up between the lead vehicle and mine section panel belt. This is accomplished by mechanical linkages on the vehicles which are interconnected by steering bars between vehicles (patent pending). The MUCH System has an operator who steers the discharge vehicle when outby travel is required. Outby travel is just like inby, with each vehicle following the path of the preceding vehicle. Surface tests overwhelmingly indicate the "UCH System should track/retrack successfully in square pillar underground room and pillar coal mines with 18 ft. wide entries and slopes up to 10 percent. For 60 degree pillar plans the minimum entry width required is 15 ft. Surface tests also indicate the MUCH System will convey over 8 TPM of coal around 90 degree corners without excessive spillage.

Daw Mill Colliery, UK Coal, near Coventry in England, mines the Warwickshire Thick Seam at 800 m/2500 ft depth using longwall retreat with gateroads supported by rockbolts. Over the last eight years the mine has worked longer and wider panels with extraction heights of over 5 m. Recently the mine has experienced high deformation conditions principally from the rib sides resulting in operational issues and production delays. Investigation of rib deformation was undertaken using new inspection and measurement techniques, including systematic laser surveying, and improved rib support consumables were developed and introduced. A new rib trussing system using textile webbing has proved very successful.. A rib support management system was also developed and introduced for face retreat. This allowed rib support to be more effectively managed both for production and safety. For the current developments, new 28-mm-diameter roof and rib bolt systems have been introduced and rib bolt length has been increased to 3 m, with the aim of achieving gateroad stability over the life of the panel. Significant reductions in roof and rib deformation have been confirmed by the latest monitoring results. These ground control innovations are allowing Daw Mill?s potential to be realised. Production from 302?s face in 2008 set new UK and European records. However the support enhancement process continues and further innovations are planned.

This study was conducted to identify, evaluate, and develop procedures to minimize or eliminate safety hazards associated with the electrokinetic dewatering process, such as toxic and volatile gas emissions, electrical shock, accidental detonation of explosives, electrochemical corrosion of metal appurtenances, and possibly others. The identification, evaluation, and procedure development were based on pertinent literature, existing safety regulations, interviews with mine personnel, physical and mechanical properties of the electrokinetic dewatering process, and physical characteristics of the material to be dewatered. The electrokinetic dewatering process was described in detail. Potential safety hazards were identified and evaluated. Procedures and/or safety regulations were developed to minimize or eliminate the potential hazards. It was recommended that the electrokinetic dewatering process when used in deep metal mines be properly monitored to obtain additional information on other potential hazards that possibly exist.

I wish to call the attention of the Institute to a curious subject, brought to my notice last summer by Mr. Begger, the accomplished metallurgist of the smelting-works of the Boston and Colorado Company at Black Hawk, near Central City, Colorado. At these works, the richest auriferous sulphurets of Colorado (particularly copper pyrites) are smelted in reverberatories, together with roasted tailings (iron pyrites), and the gold and silver are concentrated into a new, artificial sulphide, or copper matte, containing $1500 and upwards of the precious metals per ton, and this is shipped to Swansea. I will say in passing, that this shipment of an unrefined product, like the similar shipments from Utah and Nevada to San Francisco, Chicago, St. Louis, Newark, New York, and Europe, of crnde argentiferous lead or "base bullion," is not a sign of incomplete metallurgy here, but has a sound business reason. The separation of the precious metals in the West would be more expensive, to begin with ; and then it would necessitate the movement of these metals by express, . - at high rates and risk, to commercial centres or coining mints, while the base metals having no home market, must be shipped and sold at little or no profit. At present, the gold and silver, safely packed, as it were, in the base metals, are transported with safety as ordinary freight; and the base metals probably more than pay cost of shipment and separation. "Comminition process costs, which typically represent an important contribution to mining operating costs, can themselves be divided roughly between energy and liner /charge wear. As such, developing the ability of predicting mill wear will allow a more accurate estimation of wear costs and therefore their control. In this paper and based on the possibility of estimating energy dissipated in impact and abrasion by using a discrete element charge motion model for mill charge motion simulation, media wear will be investigated principally as a function of three wear mechanisms : impact, abrasion and corrosion. Experimental results will be used to identify a total media wear model. Model results will be compared with real mill data from three operating Australian mines. These preliminary results show for the cases tested that the overall average error, as compared with the observed cases, is 0 % with a standard deviation of 66.1 %. Results from the Bond abrasion index tests, for the same cases investigated, give an overall error of 73 % and a standard deviation of 192.5 %. In Greenfield situations where the estimation of operating costs is critical in determining project feasibility, the level of confidence in such estimates becomes quite important. With regards to media wear, the Bond abrasion test currently serves as the standard media wear prediction device. However, as shown [l, 21 test results once compared with actual wear rates can vary greatly. Figure 1 shows test results as compared with 15 cases. Average error over this data is 73 % with a standard deviation of 192.5 %. As such, developing the ability of more accurately predicting mill wear will allow greater confidence in wear cost estimation and therefore their control."

THE metallurgical industry has purchased more than sixty per cent of the industrial gas cleaning equipment installed in Canada. This includes cyclonic collectors, scrubbers, cloth filters and Cottrell Precipitators. These are the principal types of equipment which are used commercially for the cleaning of gases which result from the processing of iron, nickel, copper, lead, zinc, gold, gypsum and aluminum ores. The recovered dust, which usually contains metal values, is returned to the process. The cost of the equipment is thus economically justified. This is in contrast to other industries, such as those involving steam power generation, asbestos, cement and lime production, where, though dust collection equipment is extensively used, it is installed primarily for nuisance abatement. Communities are becoming more and more conscious of air pollution, new and more stringent legislation is being enacted, and, for other than economic reasons the smelting industry will eventually be required to install more efficient gas cleaning equipment.
