Most U.S. coal production is bituminous coal. Some 90% of current production comes from a geographical area enclosed in a circle with a 300 mile radius and its center at about Huntington, West Virginia. There are important underground coal production areas in the western parts of the United States as well. Most U.S. coal production comes from fairly level seams, many of which pitch rather uniformly only a few feet per mile. Usually there will be several overlying seams of varying thicknesses, separated by several tens of feet. Fig. 1. 1. Seams have minor local undulations but these? are small enough not to be a major consideration in a horizontal drilling research program.

Résumé Cent soixante (160) câbles d'ancrage ont été installés au toit de la rampe à la Mine-laboratoire de CANMET à Val-d'Or, Qué bec, Canada, pour prévenir toute dégradation suite à l'élargissement de la voie de roulage dans un secteur tournant à 180 degrés, communément appelé Virage Santa Barbara. Le roc à cet endroit est de nature bloqueuse et stratifiée, et son épaisseur au toit de la rampe est limitée à environ dix (10) mètres, le tout sous une couche de terrain meuble saturée en permanence. Le soutènement mis en place a été conçu pour former une zone de compression et supporter une strate de roc d?environ quatre (4) mètres d'épaisseur. Les critères de conception et les méthodes d'installation sont présentées. Un contrôle de qualité rigoureux a été effectué au moment de la mise en place du support, notamment en ce qui concerne la mise en tension des câbles eux-mêmes et la qualité du béton utilisé lors de l'injection. Des instruments de mesure seront mis en place sous peu pour dépister tout mouvement éventuel au toit de la rampe. Abstract Design and installation of an active mine ground support using tensioned cables at the Experimental Mine, Val-d?Or, Québec, Canada. One hundred sixty (160) cables were installed at the back of the ramp at the CANMET?s Experimental Mine located in Val-d?Or, Québec, Canada, to prevent any degradation of the ground after the enlargement of the roadway in a sector turning at 180 degrees, usually called Virage Santa Barbara. The nature of the rock mass in this area is blocky and stratified, and its thickness above the ramp does not exceed ten (10) metres. Eight (8) metres of soil, mostly saturated, cover the bedrock on top of the ramp. The ground support was designed to form a compression zone at the back, aimed to carry a strata of rock of around four (4) metres thick. The design criteria and the methods of installation of the ground support are described in the paper. A strict control of the quality of the grout used for injection and the tension placed in the cables was carried out during the installation of the support. Ground monitors will be installed soon, to detect any movement that could take place above the ramp.

Physical, mineralogical and geochemical characterization, along with some beneficiation approach to pre-concentrate the Ni content of the chromite overburden material of the Sukinda Valley, India, have been carried out in detail. Mineralogically, the overburden consists of geothite, quartz, hematite, magnetite and secondary silicates in varying proportions. A specific Ni mineral phase is absent in this material with the Ni and Fe being mostly enriched in finer fractions. Distribution of Ni and Fe in various size fractions and increase of Ni with increase in Fe (goethite content) indicate that goethite is the major Ni-bearing mineral phase. Quantitative estimation of goethite from chemical analysis and weight loss data indicates that the goethite quantity varies from 40% to 90%. Electron microprobe analysis (EPMA) indicates that Nirich and Ni-poor goethite are present in the overburden material. A sequential dissolution study indicates that more than 50% of the Ni are present within the goethite lattice as a lattice substitution. The results of pre-concentration studies (size classification, gravity, flotation and magnetic separation) indicate that Ni is richer in finer fractions. Further, the enrichment of Ni content is limited to 1.1% with 50% recovery by classification followed by hydrocyclone separation of the below 53 m m fraction.

Chemical alteration of the compressive strength of sandstone has been investigated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM). Successful development of this technology would offer an attractive alternative to the methods now used for stress control in mines. Sandstone cores were stressed to failure under uniaxial compression at two different strain rates. Specimens saturated with either distilled or tap water showed an average 14% reduction in stress at failure compared with those dried in vacuum. Samples saturated with dilute solutions of aluminum chloride, hydrochloric acid, and polyethylene oxide showed no statistically significant difference in failure stress compared with those saturated with water. By contrast, compressive strength of the cores was increased some 7% by saturation with the nonpolar solvent carbon tetrachloride. No correlation was found between zeta potential and compressive strength.

"The Iron Ore Company of Canada's Carol Lake Project is Located near the western boundary of Labrador, 960 air kilometers northeast of Montreal (Figure 1).The Concentrator operation was started in 1962 with a capacity to produce 7 million tonnes of concentrate per year. The bulk of the concentrate was pelletized at a 6 million tonnes per year pelletizing plant completed in 1963. The remaining concentrate was sold in the international market. The concentrator was first expanded in 1966 to 10 million tonnes per year capacity with the pellet plant also expanded in 1967 to match the increase in concentrate production. In 1973, the concentrator was further expanded to gear with the increase in concentrate sales. In 1977, more than 40 million tonnes of crude ore was processed to produce in excess of 17.4 million tonnes of concentrate and 10.4 million tonnes of pellets."

Local community acceptance is a key aspect of planning and managing mining projects, whether through sustainability assessment and reporting or corporate social responsibility programs. However, there has been very little research to understand the determinants of community acceptance. This paper seeks to identify key mine characteristics and demographic factors that influence individual acceptance of mining projects. Six demographic factors and 16 mine characteristics were selected based on literature review. Four of the six demographics factors were confirmed to be significantly (p < 0.05) correlated with people?s attitude of the importance of the mine characteristics. All sixteen mine characteristics are identified as important factors. The most important mining factors are Job opportunities, water shortage or pollution, air pollution and land pollution. Both the mining and control groups have same opinion of 12 mining characteristics and differ on four (infrastructure improvement, labor shortage for other businesses, noise pollution, and mine life). During design and management of mines, this data can be used as a reference. This result will facilitate better choice experiment (survey) design for discrete choice modeling. Such discrete choice models can provide a viable framework for data-driven community engagement and sustainable mine management.

In the stretch-bend or bending-under-tension test, a strip is rigidly clamped and restrained at each end and bent by central transverse loading using a radiused punch: The strip deflection at failure has been used as a measure of formability for high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steels by other investigators. In this work, a detailed study is made of strains developing during stretch bending of an 80,000-lbf/ in 2 (552 MPa) yield stress steel using different punch radii. It is shown that toward the end of the process, the bending strains at both the inner and outer surfaces are tensile and suddenly increase at a rapid and approximately equal rate. The strain ratio in the failure region departs significantly from plane strain , even using a large width-to-thickness ratio of about 10. The effective fracture strains appear to be independent of bend ratio (punch radius/thickness) and significantly below the fracture s train in simple tension. Metallographic and tensile data were obtained for the subject material and, for one bend ratio, the effects on stretch-bend parameters of annealing both on this material and a. carbon steel were compared.

IN 1933, the monetary metals were produced in a ratio of 6.7 oz. of silver to 1 oz. of gold, the lowest relatively for silver since the period from 1851 to 1865. At the beginning of that period, the virgin placers of California -and Australia began producing almost simultaneously; in consequence, there was an abrupt fall in the high silver side of the ratio that had prevailed through the centuries after America was discovered. The output from the Comstock and other silver-bearing lodes, located a decade after this influx of new gold began, soon restored the production ratio to its former proportion, that is, a relatively large weight of silver compared to gold.

Eight underground surveys were conducted to evaluate drum design, drum spray nozzle locations, ranging-arm sprays, water quantity, wetting agents, and cutting techniques. The final report is made up of eight dust-control technique reports, each discussing, details of the individual mine surveys.

Real output expanded at a 3.0% rate worldwide in 1987, a slightly lower pace than the 3.2% rate in 1986. The decline was accounted for largely by slower growth in the U.S.S.R. and the East European countries, as well as in the developing countries (table 1). According to the International Monetary Fund, output of industrial countries output grew 3.1% and rose most strongly in Japan, the United Kingdom, and Canada (table 2). U.S. economic growth remained at 2.9%, the same as in 1986. Consumer and government spending declined in industrial countries, while gross fixed investment: rent increased. This increase in fixed investment expenditures could be attributed partly to lagged results of some 1986 developments: the fall in oil prices, declining interest rates, and exchange rate changes. The U.S. budget deficit, as well as the large external deficits and surpluses among major industrial countries, hindered further growth .2 A report from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) indicates that the impact of the October stock market crash was short-lived because it hit economies that were growing strongly, anyway.3 The growth of output in the developing countries slowed in 1987; however, output declined in the fuel-exporting developing countries. These countries have been adversely affected by weakness in oil prices and the depreciation of the U.S. dollar. The weighted average of inflation rates in industrial countries--as measured by the [ ] GNP deflator, was 2.9% in 1987, down from 3.4% in 1986. Prices rose 3.0% in the United States, up from 2.6% the previous year. Inflation for 1988 is expected to remain slightly higher in the United States than in Japan and the Federal Republic of Germany because of recent exchange rates changes and the elimination of slack productive capacity and labor in the U.S. economy. The RockWorks EarthApps represent a free collection of 74 geology-related programs that read data from a built-in datasheet and create diagrams within Google Earth. EarthApps also includes programs that extract data from Google Earth. The programs that create diagrams include: point mapping (e.g. borehole locations), proportionally scaled icons (e.g. geochemistry), and strike & dip symbols. Line mapping utilities include; polylines, parabolas and pipelines. Polygon mapping programs include; thematic mapping (e.g. geology), mining claims, and public land survey sections. Image overlay capabilities include; draping (e.g. geologic maps) and time-based animations. Vertical image display capabilities are centered on either midpoints (e.g. drill-hole logs) or stretched between endpoints (e.g. cross-sections). The Flyover programs create virtual tours for site presentations. The cell-mapping includes a variety of algorithms (e.g. geochemical and geophysical contouring). Survey programs convert and export survey data to Google Earth as points and polygons. Programs that extract data from Google Earth include; points, lineations, polylines, and polygons. Archaeological and ethnographic work during the last century has shown clearly that metals have played a small but important role in prehistoric Arctic cultures. For at least the past several millenia both iron and copper have been used in the North, primarily for blades, projectile points, knives, awls, engraving tools, fishhooks, scrapers and axes. In addition they were used for joining purposes as staples and rivets. It is of great interest to enquire into the origins of these metals. In this connection one begins with the observation that to date there has been no clear evidence for the smelting or melting of metals in the Arctic prior to the arrival of Europeans. This can be explained partly by the absence of traditional pyrotechnologies such as the high-temperature firing of ceramics and the heat treatment of bone and wood. Another factor which surely inhibited the development of smelting/ melting operations is the relative absence of wood in the region. The production of charcoal for smelting requires large quantities of wood, to the extent that the desertification of a number of areas in the Old World is believed by some to have been at least partly caused by charcoal production. In the North this was obviously not possible. Thus the Arctic peoples were restricted to using native (naturally occurring) metals and metals obtained by various direct and indirect forms of contact with areas of the world where smelting was practiced. Both of these sources were important in the case of iron; we know that meteoritic iron, telluric (native) iron and smelted wrought iron were all used in the Arctic. These three types of iron will be considered in tum.

As fractures are propagated through rocks, energy is absorbed near the extending crack tip. Apparent surface energies for several rocks have been measured by cleavage under dynamic con-ditions. At nominal crack velocities from 0.5 to 500 in (min, measurements showed that fractures propagated in discrete jumps. Calculated surface energies and moduli were relatively insensitive to nominal rate of cleavage. in another set of experiments, rocks were cleaved under high confining stresses. The rocks were submerged in low leak-off fluids which formed a filter cake on the freshly cleaved surfaces (similar to the hydraulic lracturing process). Apparent surface energies were increased substantially as the surrounding fluid pressure was increased. Moduli in bending increased significantly upon application of the first 1,000 psi but were insensitive to stress level at greater pressures. INTRODUCTION For almost 20 years, hydraulic fracturing processes have been utilized effectively to stimulate oil and gas wells. During this period, some process improvements have resulted from studies of fracture orientation, mechanics of fracturing, areas generated, conductivities of cracks, etc. Yet many questions remain concerning the conditions and pressures needed during fracture propagation. In this paper we will report additional studies of the mechanics of fracture extension. It was shown previously3 that large rock samples could be cleaved under controlled conditions so as to measure the apparent surface energy (that amount of energy absorbed per unit area of new surface created). In this paper we consider the effects of two additional factors on surface energies, viz.: (1) effect of cleavage rate and (2) effect of confining stress level. THEORY Cleavage experiments were conducted on rock samples similar to that illustrated in Fig. 1. Blocks of rock several inches wide, 2- to 3-in. thick, and up to 3 ft in length were grooved longitudinally with shallow guide slots. A crack was initiated and allowed to extend along the web as the top of the rock specimen was pulled (or pushed) apart. Auxiliary equipment permits the measurement of (1) force applied at the top, (2) separation at the top and (3) crack length. (Further experimental details will be given in the next section.) The rock beams created by the crack are considered ton be cantilever beams. The deflection (or separation of the rock beams) at any point is calculated 4,5 by the beam Eq. 1.

Mine waste and mine reclamation are topics of major interest to the mining industry, the government and the general public. This publication and its companion volume are the proceedings of a conference held in Pittsburgh, April 19-21, 1988. There were nine sessions (50 papers) that dealt with the geochemistry, hydrology and problems of mine waste and mine water, especially acid mine drainage. These comprise Volume 1. The nine sessions (43 papers) that dealt with reclamation and restoration of disturbed lands, as well as related policy issues, are included in volume 2. Volume 2 also contains the ten papers that pertained to control of subsidence and mine fires at abandoned mines. Poster session presentations are, in general, represented by abstracts; these have been placed in the back of both volumes.

Mining data collection, storage, and interpretation methods have progressively changed over time. Data collection, for the most part, has transitioned from handwritten notes and logs based on manual gauge readings to real-time data streaming through instrumentation capable of directly communicating with site-based data historians or cloud storage. Data collection and storage have had to adjust commensurately with the volume of data, leading to more complex database architecture. Geoscience interpretation methods have also changed; however, the first goals of modeling and understandings from first principles remain the same and are typically deeply rooted in historical academic work. Machine learning methods are becoming more common, available, and implemented by industry and practitioners. Despite the wide accessibility of machine learning methods, the population of geoscience subject matter experts in the underlying theory of this analysis type is limited. This form of analysis, therefore, must be conducted carefully and in conjunction with subject matter experts, on both machine learning theory and the field it is being applied to. This paper aims to provide background history on data analytics and machine learning, current methods and practices, and high-level geoscience case study examples, as well as take aways regarding the mining industry, potential pitfalls specific to geosciences, and possible perspectives on the direction of artificial intelligence in the future.

A simplified energy model for the United States is quantified for a recent historical period. The basic model and calculated quantified structures are used for a number of analytical case studies that estimate midterm and long-range shifts in patterns of energy resources demand and required supply. Historical data series are presented for the years 1947 to 1965 in the form of integrated energy balances by source, form, and consuming sector. In case studies I to XII, conditional projections of historical trends of energy demand and required supply are made for the midterm period 1966 to 1980. The projections are carried out by correlation of major energy components with relevant independent variables such as major economic indicators. Simulations of the medium-range projections to 1980 are carried out by varying the assumptions for the determining variables to produce high-and low-range projections for the midterm period. Case studies XIII to XXII are long term contingency or technological forecasts to the year 2000. These cases assume technological changes or innovations that produce major shifts in the long term pattern of energy consumption and the mix of required resources. The domestic resource base is assessed in its ability to meet projected or forecast demand for energy resources under the midterm and longrun assumptions made in the various case studies. Various energy issues or problems identified from the analyses of the case studies are discussed, and possible alternative approaches to solutions to these issues or problems are suggested.

On January 14, 1974 a fire occurred in the 3 East mains of the Joanne Mine of Eastern Associated Coal Corp. in Rachel, West Virginia. The mine was evacuated without injury and sealed completely at the surface within 24 hours. It was decided by the coal company along with the U, S, Bureau of Mines, the West Virginia Bureau of Mints and MESA that remote sealing of the fire zone would be attempted. This report summarizes the remote sealing effort and those activities directly related to the remote sealing effort. This chapter provides a brief history of previous remote sealing attempts, a description of the recently developed remote sealing system and a description of the Joanne Mine operation as it related to and affected the remote sealing effort.
