This paper presents an arcuate magnetic separator to remove the grinding ball fragment directly from the mill discharge, which will cause wear to downstream processing equipment such as pump, hydro cyclones and pebble crusher. Furth more this type separator was applied in Wushan mine under China National Group Corporation in China. After months of operation, the equipment has been a success. As ore grades decline, ore deposits get harder and mineralogical complexity increases, metallurgical skills are more important than ever to ensure that today?s mining operations are operating efficiently and profitably. Yet specialist undergraduate degree programs have all but disappeared and metallurgical skills training for graduate engineers in the workspace if often haphazard. In response to this situation, specialists at the JK Centre in Queensland, Australia, have put together a professional development program designed to fast-track skills development for early career metallurgical professionals. The program, called ?MetSkill ® ?, is offered as a group training package for young metallurgists in the workplace. It is centred on a meaningful technical investigation negotiated between the JK Centre delivery team and the client company. As well as learning about project management and data collection and analysis, the participants study specialist topics such as comminution, flotation and mineralogy under the tutelage of senior research and consulting professionals. The technical investigation provides an opportunity for immediate practice of these new skills and JK Centre specialists are on hand to provide feedback and support throughout the program. The participants are employed across different operations in Australia and the Asia-Pacific, and although they occasionally come together for group training activities they are often separated by considerable distance. Specialist educational professionals from The University of Queensland have provided an innovative web platform to support collaboration and communication between all participants. This paper will describe the MetSkill ® program in detail, as well as providing a report on its initial roll-out to 2 groups of Australian graduate metallurgists in 2012

In recent years many creative technologies are applied to SLon vertical ring and pulsating high gradient magnetic separators. SLon-2500 and SLon-3000 vertical ring and pulsating high gradient magnetic separators are created towards larger scale. Through optimizing the magnetic system and lowering the electric current density, their energy consumption is obviously dropped. New magnetic matrixes are developed to raise the beneficial efficiency of valuable minerals. Special SLon vertical ring and pulsating high gradient magnetic separators are developed which can treat coarser particles of 0-5 mm. Through these technology creations, the mineral processing efficiency of SLon magnetic separators is further raised and their processing cost dropped. Therefore, they have been found wider applications. SLon-2500 applied in Essar Steel of India. In 2007, Essar Steel did a test on its Kirandul hematite ore with SLon magnetic separator and got very good results. The feed grade is 59.77%Fe, after SLon one roughing and one scavenging, the total iron concentrate grade is 65.00%Fe and iron recovery 93.86%. In 2008-2010, the company bought 10 SLon-2500 magnetic separators to treat such iron ores. In 2010 the first SLon-3000 was applied to processing ilmenite. The magnetite-ilmenite deposit is located in Pan Zhi Hua, Si Chuan Province of China. The ore processing flow sheet is: Drum low intensity magnetic separator is used to take out magnetite, and then the SLon-3000 is used to recover ilmenite for roughing. The mags of the SLon-3000 are further cleaned by flotation. The SLon-3000 average operational results are: feed grade 9.52%TiO2, mags grade 17.43%TiO2, mags mass ratio 41.01%, TiO2 recovery 75.09%, non-mags grade 4.02% TiO2, non-mags mass ratio 58.99%. SLon magnetic separators Applied to treat 0-5mm limonite: The feed of SLon magnetic separator is usually 0-2 mm which needs to be ground by ball mill. As many Chinese iron ores are poor grades, if we can throw part of tails before grinding, the grinding cost will be greatly reduced. In 2010, a SLon-1500 and a SLon-2000 were specially built to treat 0-5 mm limonite. The feed grade is 26.51%Fe, mags grade 53.20%Fe, iron recovery 64.26, and tails grade 13.66% Fe. SLon-2500 applied to purify quartz. In 2009, a SLon-2500 magnetic separator was applied to purify quartz in Shan Xi province. Its feed is 0-1mm quartz which contains 0.15%-0.25%Fe2O3, the designed non-mags grade need to be less 0.08% Fe2O3. The production results of SLon-2500 non-mags are 0.05-0.06% Fe2O3, much better than the designed data. SLon applied in Si Jia Ying Iron Mine to recover hematite. Si Jia Ying is a big oxidized iron mine located in He Bei Province of China. In 2005-2010, a plant annually treating 10 million tons of oxidized iron ore was built in which 39 SLon magnetic separators are applied. The total flow sheet results are: Feed grade 30.44%Fe, iron concentrate grade 66%Fe, iron recovery 80%Fe, tails grade 9.65Fe%. SLon applied to recover specularite. Li Lou Iron Mine in An Hui Province of China built a plant annually processing 5 million tons of iron ore in 2010-2011. 25 SLon-2000 magnetic separators are applied to recover specularite. The total flow sheet results are: Feed grade 31.65%Fe, iron concentrate grade 65%Fe, iron recovery 80%Fe, tails grade 10.37%Fe. SLon applied in Da Hong Shan Iron Mine. Da Hong Shan Iron Mine is located in Yun Nan province of China. It treats 4.5 million tons of oxidized iron ore annually. 15 SLon-2000 magnetic separators are applied to recover hematite. The total flow sheet results are: Feed grade 35.61%Fe, iron concentrate grade 64.95%Fe, iron recovery 74.08%Fe, tails grade 15.55%. Low-grade ore bodies, increase in rock competency, finely disseminated valuable minerals in the ore bodies, ore variability and water scarcity are among the technical challenges faced by the mining industry. These challenges have increased the business risk, capital investment and operating cost of the mining projects. Since the last 20 years, many large-scale concentrators have been built to cope with the above-mentioned challenges. Comminution, especially the fine grinding is an energy-intensive process. For example, the ball mill has a limitation in the fine grinding regime where the energy consumption increases exponentially when the product size is below 45 µm. The industry has been seeking for solutions that have a minimum risk and total cost of ownership. The stirred milling technology such as the TowerMill is well accepted by the industry as it has demonstrated the attributes required for fine grinding. TowerMill is a matured technology that has been adopted since the 80s for regrinding duty. Recently, this technology was installed in secondary and tertiary grinding duty to prepare a finer feed to rougher flotation. Four units of TowerMills were installed in a magnetite concentrator in Western Australia in tertiary grinding duty. Recently, Nippon Eirich has conducted process performance evaluation on the TowerMill circuit. The outcome of the exercise had indicated that the circuit is consuming 3.4 kWh/t to reduce from 55 µm to 35 µm with a narrow product size distribution. The effect of operating variables such as the specific energy, grinding media size, mill content % solids and mill feed configuration on the grinding efficiency were evaluated at the plant scale. Furthermore, the scale-up methodology was validated. The scope of this paper includes the performances of TowerMill and the validation of scale-up methodology.

"The flexibility of the PlantStar control platform has enabled Mintek to investigate and easily develop new control strategies for both milling and flotation. This includes a Solids Feed Controller, a Safety Limit Controller, Mill Power Optimiser and Flotation Optimiser, amongst others.The solids feed controller was developed for minerals processing plants using a specialised time delay compensator. Using conventional time delay compensators that are purely model based, results in robustness problems due to model uncertainties. The Mintek Solid Feeds Controller makes use of a plant model, but compensates for model inaccuracies, giving more controller stability and a more robust delay compensation algorithm.The safety limit controller has been developed to switch smoothly between normal and safety control loops without bumping the process. The safety loop output is chosen in accordance with a predefined list of priorities and whether the respective constraint boundaries are exceeded.The Mill Power Optimiser helps to find the power peak on the mill power curve. This insures maximum grind with maximum throughput. It also prevents power dips due to mill overloads, making the milling circuit easier to operate.The flotation optimiser algorithm analyses trends of all accessible variables in the process. The algorithm uses this information to calculate operating conditions that will control the residence times, mass pulls and circulating loads within a flotation circuit to a specified setpoint. Research is being done to now optimise these setpoints in order to achieve better recovery."

Chromium ore exploitation has commenced in 1948 in Albania and there are produced about 24.3 million tons up to the end of 2006. Last years the prices and need were increased notably. Main export of chromium ores and concentrates was accomplished respectively 114 500 ton and 13 000 ton in People Republic of China during 2006 year. Location, status, reserves and grade of chromium deposits of Albania are presented in the paper. Chromium ore enrichment is related with their composition and Cr2O3 content, as well as with market requests. Actually, high grade chromium ores with Cr2O3 content over 38% ~ 40% are directly exported or treated in metallurgy, but last time have been exported and chromium ores with 28% ~ 30% Cr2O3 content for the reason that dressing plants can not be operated for investment lack. High grade chromium ores have been treated in heavy media separation plant before 1990. It is presented flow sheet, figures and necessity to put in operation HMS plant in the paper. Actually, low grade chromium ores with content 16% ~ 20% Cr2O3 are not enriched for the lack of investments, but before 1990 they have been concentrated in dressing plants producing chromium concentrates grade 48% ~ 50% Cr2O3. In the paper are shown technological schemes and industrial figures during more than 20 years operation and possibilities to reconstruct these mineral processing plants. Only chromium mineral processing plant of Bulqiza is in operation using as raw material its old existing tailings. The flow sheet and figures show that are possibilities to increase recovery and grade of concentrate in the plant. Separation and concentration of slimes in suitable equipment gives visible improvement of Cr2O3 recovery. Several tests have been carried out with flotation and magnetic separation methods for enrichment of low grade chromium ores. Flow sheet and figures of mineral processing ores content olivine as gangue mineral are interesting, because combination of gravimetric with magnetic methods is necessary in this case. In the paper are presented the tests and good results of low chromium ore pre concentration. Metallurgical treatment of chromium ores to produce Ferro chrome, as well as technological process, figures, consume of electrical power and materials in Elbasani and Burreli furnaces are shown and necessary investments to treat in metallurgy all produced chromium ores in Albania are considered.

Domestic production of pyrite cinder reached 15.95 million tons in 2006. The pyrite cinder used in cement industry accounts for about 30% production. The remaining 70%, 11.17 million tons, was thrown away as waste, which brought serious environmental and resource problems. A new technology of composite pellet reduction-roasting and magnetic-separation (CPRM) has been developed to utilize pyrite cinder. Pyrite cinder sample, containing 45.56% Fe, 0.19% Cu and 1.45% S, was pelletized with addition of 5% composite agent in balling disc. Green balls after drying were reduced at 700~800 ? for 20min with 300kg/t pulverized coal injection in rotary kiln. After two stages of ball-grinding and four stages of magnetic separation, high grade magnetite concentrate with 66.23% Fe was produced, meanwhile impurities Cu and S was decreased to 0.048% and 0.053%, respectively. And iron recovery of 73.32%, desulphurization of 96.34% and decoppering degree of 74.73% were achieved. Key technique is that composite agent can accelerate reduction of Fe2O3 and transfer copper and sulphur into water-soluble inorganic salts, which can be removed during wet magnetic concentration. This new technology can be used to fully utilize pyrite cinder and produce high quality magnetite concentrates as feed for steel industry, which will help tackle the pollution problem of pyrite cinder and extend iron-bearing raw material sourcing for Chinese steel industry.

"Banded iron formations are the major iron source for producing high grade concentrate. BIF are generally lower grade and more difficult to extract. In order to know how best to process BIF ore, it require comprehensive knowledge on ore bodies even in the early stages of the mining process. Geometallurgy combines geological and mineral processing information and allows for higher flexibility in response to changes in the plant feed when mining different parts of the ore. This can lead to economic benefits, owing to improved plant operation, yet is time consuming and correspondingly costly. The main focus of this paper work has been to develop a comprehensive geometallurgical testing framework for developing Yogi BIF low grade magnetite deposit located at Western Australia. In order to provide successful geometallurgical mapping, was collected data from several different disciplines (geology, chemistry, mineralogy) and parameters (physical properties, metallurgical response and geotechnical measurements) during drilling activities and test work. The investigation shown magnetic separation behavior of material had high variation and is most important element in the proper design of ore beneficiation plant. This paper provides an improved and efficient magnetic separation test methods used for the investigation of separation behavior and variability of the Yogi Ore deposit and evaluates their applicability and potential in the geometallurgical context. In this paper a small-scale magnetic separation has been developed that allows estimating from single pass separation test using small amounts of sample material. Verification of the evaluation method and validation was done with different mineral systems."

"There is abundant rare-earth element(REE) in our country, but it is very fragmented in the earth's crust, and it is very difficult to mining or mining cost is extremely high. There are few of industrial value rare-earth deposits. There is a lot of concomitant rare-earth deposits, and the comprehensive utilization value is high. There is very rich carlin-type gold resource, associated with a certain amount of REE in the southwest of Guizhou province. In order toutilize comprehensively the resources, this paper conducts the study on the occurrence characteristics of REE in the ore. By the chemical analysis, the gold grade is 3.35g/t, the organic carbon 0.81%, the total REE 0.022%, which is a high carbon fine disseminated gold ore. By the optical microscope and XRD analysis, the major minerals are quartz, pyrite, calcite, limonite, arsenopyrite, mica, kaolinite, clay minerals, etc. In addition, there is a large amount of carbonaceous materials, such as organic carbon, graphite, which is harmful on leaching of gold. By the scanning electron microscopy analysis, there are thorium, lanthanum and neodymium, ytterbium, persimmon and other REE in the ore. Gravity separation shows that REE could be enriched to lighter material mainly, which indicates that REE disseminate closely with lighter materials.INTRODUCTION Carlin-type gold ore is important gold resource in the world, which are mainly distributed in Nevada and its vicinity, as well as the two Golden Triangle of Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi and Sichuan, Shanxi, Gansu province in China(Su W.C. et al.,2009; Xia G.X.,1996).Guizhou carlin-type gold ore is the second largest gold resource in the world(Muntean J L et al.,2011), distributing along the southwestern margin of the Yangtze plate, mainly mineralizing in the neopaleozoic-early mesozoic(Xie Z J et al.,2017). Many large gold deposits have been found in southwest in Guizhou in twentieth century, such as Zimuyou,Getang, Lannigou, Shuiyindong and Laowanchang gold deposit, and so on, and the gold reserves reach over 100 tons(Xia Y. et al.,2009).There is a certain amount of rare-earth resource in the carlin-type gold ore in the southwest in Guizhou province, and the current researches might mainly focus on characteristics of REE from the angle of geological mineralization(AnanyevY.,2015), not from the angle of separation and enrichment."

"The goal of prospecting operations in the Republic of Altay was to locate gold-sulfide-quartz mineralization. For this purpose we applied the technology of electromagnetic sounding and induced polarization (EMS-IP). These operations resulted in localizing promising sites with presence of sulfidization. The EMS-IP method proved to be highly efficient amongst other prospecting methods targeted at recognizing zones of sulfide mineralization making up 91%, considering that in more than half cases the ore intervals were the case. In the Yakutian diamondiferous province the EMS-IP technology was approbated during three field seasons to accomplish the assignments on searching for kimberlite bodies under conditions of various geological types. As a result, the reference objects were distinguished, and geoelectric parameters of kimberlite pipes of explosion were defined.INTRODUCTION In the time span 2015-2016 in Gorny Altay the EMS-IP technology was approbated in the Novokuznetsk area. The on-land areal geophysical survey was performed by EMS-IP method applied to identify, outline and locate promising sites with Au-Ag-bearing polymetallic mineralization within surveyed areas. Compared to the hosting rocks, the sulfides contained in polymetallic mineralization are typified by low specific electrical resistivity (SER) and high polarization. The areal survey conducted via EMS-IP method provided spatial characteristics of searched object. From July 2016 to August 2017 our expedition group carried out serial test works and laboratory investigations intending to define performance capabilities of EMS-IP technology in searching for kimberlite bodies under conditions of diverse geological types. The prerequisites for serial work were operations accomplished at the «Listvenichny» site lying 35 km away from Mirny town in the Sakha Republic (Yakutia), where the EMS-IP technology was probed for locating position and measuring geoelectric parameters of tuff pipe «Buardakhsky». After successful completion of operations it was decided to evaluate geoelectric parameters of kimberlite pipes of explosion."

Multiple Attribute Decision Making (MADM) method is applied to select tailings site of the Gol-e-Gohar Iron Ore Processing Plant in the Kerman province, south-eastern of Iran. To select tailings site, screening is applied on eight location proposed by Binnie and Granges. Consequently three sites identified for further studies. Evaluation factors include only the most important factors such as efficiency ratio, elevation and distance to processing facilities, occurrence of faults and fractures. Crisp values such as efficiency ratio, elevation and distance can be determined by measurements and calculations, but some factors such as occurrence of faults and fractures are presented as linguistic values that can be described with triangular fuzzy numbers. Based on evaluation values obtained an optimal tailings site can be selected using a modified Technique of ranking Preferences by Similarity to the Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) given crisp data and linguistic variables as the alternatives of attributes. Each attribute?s weight is assigned using the analytic hierarchy process. The final ranking order aids in the selection of tailings site. Finally, the stages of modified TOPSIS method were applied and site No.2 situated in 5400m to the mill was selected as the best alternative.

In this paper, the development of research and practice on the separation process of fine complex Cu-S ore at a Copper Mine in south of China, was discussed. Since early 1980s, various processes were used, such as the process of bulk flotation-separation, the process of selection flotation and the process of iso-flotation. Especially when the process of selective flotation was put into operation, further development was achieved in beneficiation results, but the difficulty in separation of chalcopyrite from pyrite has not been solved yet, so causing a poor quality of Cu concentrate. The author has successfully developed a new separation process characterized by the use of collector thionocarbamate and fast flotation. The selectivity of fine chalcopyrite and pyrite was greatly improved. This process supplied a new route for the treatment of fine complex Copper sulphide ores.

"A limited series of laboratory batch flotation tests was conducted on a suite of calcium-ferrite-based slags made in laboratory smelting trials. The smelting tests were conducted as part of a wider CSIRO Minerals’ research project aimed at developing a single-stage continuous copper-making process. The objective of the flotation work was to maximise copper recovery and iron rejection from slags made in the process.The slags treated included a reduced low copper slag, an oxidised high copper slag composite, and a very reduced low copper self-pulverising slag. The copper content of the slags varied from 2.9% to 14% Cu. The copper was present as metallic copper, oxide copper and copper-calcium ferrite phases with the phase mix related to smelting conditions. The slags were crushed, ground, wet-screened at 355 or 210 µm to remove coarse metallic particles of copper, and floated at natural pH (about pH 11) using reagents and conditions appropriate for the selective recovery of the copper phases.In rougher/scavenger tests on the reduced low copper and self-pulverising slags copper recoveries above 92% were obtained with copper enrichment ratios varying between 2.3 and 2.9. For the oxidised high copper slag copper recoveries were poorer - only 47% of the copper was recovered with an enrichment ratio of 3.3. The presence of the slow floating copper-ferrite phases in the slags limited further (selective) copper recovery. Ageing of the high copper slag, that is, a significant delay between grinding and flotation, resulted in a deterioration of the copper flotation response.The critical parameter affecting the flotation of copper from direct converting slags was found to be the form of the copper in the slag. Slags containing a higher proportion of the more desirable form of copper for flotation will provide the best opportunity for high copper recoveries to be consistently obtained, allowing improvements in the economics of the overall copper-making process."

In this study, the QEMSCAN technology is used to acquire quantitative modal, textural, mineral association and liberation data on different products generated from with or without washing, fractionation by size and density using screens and heavy liquids/panning, which has provided significant information on the quality and beneficiability of four categories of low Grade iron ores from Jharkhand-Orissa region. The deposit of low Grade iron ore has been categorized into four categories viz. Grade-I with <45% Fe(t) a) containing shale rich type and b) BHJ rich type; Grade-II with 45-55% Fe(t) and Grade-III with >55% Fe(t) containing conventional flaky, hard, kanga, lateritic, shale and BHJ litho/ore types in varied proportions. Mineralogy is similar across all samples being hematite, martite, goethite, kaolinite and gibbsite. Banded Hematite Jasper has difficult liberation characteristics due to highly compact banded mode of silica mineral occurrence with hematite. In all categories, the grade dilution is by the presence of 1) ?Discrete gangue rich litho types? at lump size and 2) ?Within ore types?. The second type of grade dilution contains coating of gangue phases around the iron ore minerals and different degree of locking of gangue phases within iron ore minerals. Further characterization and beneficiation assessment details are discussed in this paper.

The processing of banded iron ore by direct anionic and reverse cationic flotation to produce pellet grade concentrate is investigated. This low-grade iron ore, known as banded hematite quartzite (BHQ) contains 41.8% Fe, 41.5% SiO2, 1.2% Al2O3, and 0.5% LOI. The flotation behavior of BHQ is studied by varying the effect of concentration of collector, frother, dispersant and pH. Oleic acid and dodecylamine are used as the anionic and cationic collectors respectively. The parameters that gave the best results in cell flotation are utilized in 100 mm diameter flotation column. All the results are compared with regard to the iron grade and recovery in concentrate. It is observed that, anionic collector with dispersant dosage of 220 g/ton, at pH ~8.5 is selective and yielded a high-grade iron concentrate with low silica as impurity. Also, it is possible to achieve an iron concentrate with 64% Fe at 30-37% weight recovery. The characterization studies of the BHQ ore using X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique and liberation analysis with QEMSCAN® are carried out. The sample contains 58.8% hematite and 37.7% quartz and the liberation of hematite particles are found to be 90.3% in -25 µm size. An alternative statistical modeling approach called response surface methodology was also undertaken to optimize the operating parameters in order to maximize the iron grade and recovery. The predicted results by the model are in agreement with the experimental values.

Most of the iron ore washing plants set up in India consist of sizing of the ore by dry / wet screening, washing and classification by screw classifiers followed by multi-stage hydrocycloning of screw classifiers? overflow. The underflow of the hydrocyclones forms the concentrate which is used for pellets making. As the cut-point of hydrocyclones is generally at 20 microns, relatively lower diameter cyclones in a cluster with parallel feeding are used. This is found to, often, result in choking of the spigots, at times, by extraneous material as well reporting along with the slurry. It is observed to lead to sub-optimum performance of the cyclones with loss of iron values into cyclone overflow and thereafter into tailings. Analysis of data of an operating beneficiation plant (Beneficiation Plant - 1, BP - 1) of M/s Jindal South West (JSW) Steel Limited, Karnataka, India over a period of one year indicated that weight recovery of the concentrate from two-stage hydrocycloning was 45% (with respect to feed to the cyclones) and assaying 63.43% Fe, 4.43% SiO2 and 2.32% Al2O3. CSIR - National Metallurgical Laboratory - Madras Centre (NML - MC), India developed flotation process for processing screw classifier overflow with a view to improve the recovery of ultrafine iron values from it. Detailed investigations at laboratory scale flotation column and on-site pilot plant trials proved that the production of the concentrate and productivity of the plant could be enhanced by adopting reverse cationic column flotation technology. It was established that a typical screw classifier overflow analyzing 60.54% Fe, 5.95% SiO2 and 3.67% Al2O3 could be upgraded to 64.21% Fe, 2.64% SiO2 and 2.20% Al2O3 with 82.7% weight and 84.7% Fe recovery. This translates into an increase of 80% in weight recovery of the concentrate compared to what is being obtained, at present, by two-stage cycloning. It had an added advantage of reduced SiO2 in the concentrate. Thus, SiO2 in the final concentrate could be reduced to 2.64% from 4.43% by adopting column flotation. The concentrate so generated meets the stringent specifications, especially in terms of alumina in it(should be less than 2.50%) for pellets making. This study compares the use of an aminophosphonate chelating resin Purolite S950 and a sulphonic acid strong cation exchange resin Purolite C160H to recover nickel and cobalt from the synthetic bioleach solutions. Batch adsorption of metal citrate is performed as a function of metal citrate concentration (15~2000 mg/L) and solution pH (0.01M and 0.1M citric acid). The adsorption mechanism as inferred from the fit to Langmuir (LM), Freundlich (FM) and Redlich-Peterson (RP) models demonstrates that nickel citrate adsorbed onto C160H appears monolayer in comparison to that adsorbed onto S950 exists multilayer. In contrast, cobalt citrate adsorption onto both C160H and S950 agrees with the LM model. The results have shown that loading capacities of nickel and cobalt citrate onto C160H are 60 and 65 mg/g whereas those observed onto S950 are 16mg/g and 6 mg/g respectively. These are achieved in metal citrate prepared in 0.1 M citric acid. Resin regeneration is conducted in using 2 M nitric acid solution. The results show high efficiency of nickel and cobalt citrate elution from Purolite C160H. Findings from this study suggest Purolite C160H is a suitable adsorbent for recovering nickel and cobalt from bioleaching solutions.

This paper, while briefly reviews its main scientific and technological advancement, pays special attention to the complete set of new technology and technical index achieved in recent years, which is characterized by using full-floatation flow-sheet as the backbone flow-sheet, explores some key factors influencing tungsten floatation, and presents a brief introduction to such new equipment as flotation column and comprehensive utilization of fluorite.

The precipitation of a selection of metals from both a synthetic and an actual metal-rich effluent was investigated. The experimental aspects of this study were carried out in a two-stage process consisting of a pre-treatment clarifier and a fluidised bed (pellet) reactor. Each unit operation in the two-stage process was investigated separately. The pre-treatment clarification stage at pH ˜ 5 resulted in a 99.9% removal of iron and 97.3% removal of aluminium. The pellet reactor was used to precipitate nickel as nickel carbonate from a pure stream and a removal efficiency of 99.6% was achieved. The high local supersaturation at the reagent inlet points caused the formation of a large amount of fines, but these agglomerated onto the pellets up the length of the bed. For copper precipitated as copper sulphide from a pure stream, a maximum removal efficiency of 92% was achieved. The high local supersaturation at the reagent inlets also caused the formation of a large amount of fines, but the extremely sparingly soluble nature of copper sulphide meant that the fines were not agglomerated up the length of the bed. For removal of cobalt as cobalt carbonate from an actual stream, a stable cobalt removal of only 60% was achieved. This was found to be due to the presence of magnesium, which reduced the cobalt precipitation efficiency through the formation of the magnesium bicarbonate ion.

The demand for high-grade iron ore has increased the importance of beneficiation of low-grade iron ores. The captive mines of Tata Steel Limited, India has reserves of Banded Haematite Jasper (BHJ) ore assayed 40% Fe, 40% SiO2 and <1% Al2O3. QEMSCAN study has revealed haematite and quartz as a major iron bearing and gangue mineral phases respectively. Liberation characteristics have showed 80% liberation can be obtained at particle size below 10µm. In the present study, reverse cationic froth flotation of BHJ using ether diamines is explored in Denver-D12 flotation cell. Polynomial response surface regression equation coupled with six-factor Box-Behnken design of experiments is used to generate the correlation between process separation efficiency and flotation parameters. Flotation studies of BHJ indicated that concentrate of 62% Fe can be achieved with 62% Fe recovery from Jig concentrate at optimum conditions. The obtained product can blend with pellet fines to feed in blast furnace. Keywords: banded haematite jasper, flotation, box-behnken design, response surface methodology
