In June of 2013, Odyssey Marine Exploration conducted sea trials of the newly installed SeaBat 7150 full-ocean multibeam sonar system on the M/V Dorado Discovery over the Fierberling Guyot in the northeast Pacific Ocean. Fieberling Guyot is located approximately 990 kilometers west of San Diego, California and it rises abruptly from the deep ocean floor (~4300 meters) to a minimum depth of approximately 438 meters. The SeaBat 7150 operates at two distinct frequencies, 24 kHz (shallow to 3000 meters) and 12 kHz (full-ocean depth greater than 2000 meters). Onboard operational data are managed by a suite of state-of-the-art software. A SQL Server 2012 database provides the highly specific management and visualization tools as ArcGIS 10, Micromine 2013, and Geobank 2013 database. The 7150 is mounted on a gondola one meter lower than on previous system and greatly reduces bubble interference. The 7150 generates 880 beams

The Gavia Autonomous Underwater Vehicle is a two-man portable AUV that is capable of performing seafloor surveys in water depths to 2000 meters. The standard survey sensor suite includes a dual frequency side scan sonar and high resolution digital camera. Additional survey sensors are currently being incorporated into the Gavia AUV, include Sub Bottom sonar, Swath Bathymetry sonar and Multi Beam sonar. The modular design of the Gavia AUV allows the end user to quickly incorporate new sensors including client developed propriety sensors.

"TOML’s ISA Contract comprises six areas (A-F) that span from 118° to 152° W and from 7° to 15° N or over 70% of the CCZ.During a 2015 exploration cruise, TOML scientists found that the a logging system developed by ISA (2010) was able to be adapted and enhanced, to describe in some detail the varied morphology of nodules both within the TOML areas and between them.The shapes and sizes of nodules seen were then found to relate to substrate type and setting, and thus likely thickness and long-term stability of the geochemically active layer. Consideration of the various processes that might influence growth helps constrain nodule formation further. While there is no immediate worldwide shortage of hard minerals, the consumption of natural resources is constantly increasing, and there are ominous predictions of shortages to come. Means of meeting rapidly increasing demands are being implemented. These include such methods as exploration and discovery of new ore bodies, development of new mines, increasing production at existing mines, working or reopening known deposits of lower grade ore and tailings, recycling old materials, and developing more efficient and less wasteful processes to convert ores and metals into useful products. The United States, although itself mineral-rich, depends in large measure on imports for many key minerals and basic materials derived therefrom. According to the Department of the Interior, the U. S. depends upon imports for more than half of its supply of six of the basic thirteen raw materials required by any industrialized society - aluminum, chromium, manganese, nickel, tin, and zinc. By 1985 the country will also depend upon imports for more than half of its iron and tungsten, and by the year 2000 imports will have to supply more than half of the copper, potassium, and sulfur that it requires.

"REVIEW OF ISA's DRAFT EXPLOITATION REGULATIONS – HAVE KEY STAKEHOLDERS' CONCERNS BEEN ADDRESSED ADEQUATELY?In early August 2017, the ISA published a revised draft of the exploitation regulations. My presentation will focus on the extent to which key State and Contractor issues raised in formal submissions in November 2016 have been addressed in the revised draft and any additional key issues in the revised draft which are likely to cause significant concern for Contractors.ABSTRACTFollowing the ISA's call for submissions in response to draft zero of the exploitation regulations in July 2016, 43 responses from stakeholders were received by the ISA in November 2016. My presentation will start by briefly looking at how the ISA has continued to engage with stakeholders following the publication of draft zero of the exploitation regulations, including at payment regime workshops in London (November 2016) and Singapore (April 2017) and at the environmental workshop held in Berlin in March 2017. It will also touch on the publication in February 2017 of what was in effect a very preliminary draft of the environmental regulations before moving on to consider in detail the extent to which key State and Contractor issues have been addressed in the ISA revised draft exploitation regulations which were published in August 2017. My review of the formal submissions will include, amongst other things, commentary on:(i) the level of Stakeholder response (State Parties to UNCLOS, Sponsoring States, Privately owned Contractors, State Owned Contractors and NGOs);(ii) the quality of the submissions (particularly by States and Contractors); (iii) the key concerns raised by State and Contractor stakeholders and how those issues have been addressed in the revised draft exploitation regulations; and(iv) how all stakeholders need to further engage with the ISA to ensure that the exploitation code adequately addresses the legitimate and reasonable concerns of each Stakeholder group (e.g. Contractors, Sponsoring States, Developing States and NGOs)."

Active development of the exploration and further exploitation of deep-sea minerals requires special emphasis on the protection of the marine environment. The complexity of this subject lies in the fact that potential impact and effects of future mining activity are not completely known. One of the main sources of potential impact near the seafloor, as it expected, would be a generation of sediment plumes, their dispersion and redeposition of sediment. Meanwhile, their dimensions, rates of dispersion and redeposition are a big issue. Other plumes are expected in the surface layer as a result of discharges of processing waters and particles after sorting on board of mining vessel, and their features are also not clear. At the same time, understanding of these aspects would be crucial for definition of environment impact area, delineation and designation of different types of protected areas (Areas of Particular Environmental Interest, Impact and Preservation Reference Zones) and future assessment of environmental impacts. Attempts to address these issues demonstrated wide variations between the data of field experiments on the one hand and the results of analytical and numerical models on the other. According to in situ measurements, plumes were detected at a distance vary from one to less than 20 km [e.g., Burns et al., 1980; Sharma et al., 2001; Nautilus Minerals, 2008 etc.], whilst some models show results up to 100 km [Rolinski S. et al., 2001] and more. It seemed that results of in-situ experiments are preferable, but they were not many indeed. However, these data were used in different investigations rather widely, but their focus, as far as we know, was not on the matters related directly with plumes.

The southern shoreline of Monterey Bay, extending from Moss Landing to the Monterey Peninsula, consists of sandy beaches backed by an extensive Flandrian and pre-Flandrian dune complex. This length of shoreline, proximal to areas of urban expansion, is currently being considered for development. For this reason, it is extremely important to understand the variability of beach and dune position along this stretch of coast through time. Previous studies of southern Monterey Bay have documented relatively high erosion rates of 2-8 ft/yr due to a net deficit in the sand budget. Although the sediment transport system in this region is not well understood, estimates for the sediment deficit in southern Monterey Bay range from 200,000 to 1,500,000 yd3/yr. A possible cause of the erosional regime in the southern bay is the removal of sediment by coastal sand mining operations. Based on agency reports and mining permit applications, approximate volumes of sand removed by mining range from 300,000 to 450,000 yd3/yr. These volumes are significant when compared with estimated values for the sediment budget deficit. The sand of southern Monterey Bay, a valuable commercial resource because of its hardness, roundness, amber color and range of usable grain sizes, has been removed from the surf zone, beaches and dunes of Marina and Sand City by four companies since 1906. Information regarding the cross-shore location of sand removal and the exact amounts of sand removal through time is proprietary and poorly documented. However, records documenting the time at which each company commenced and terminated mining do exist. This information suggests that the greatest amount of sand was removed between 1950 and 1968 when three mining companies were operating concurrently.

Since 2013, GSR has undertaken 4 exploration campaigns, which focused on environmental baseline monitoring (marine biology), resource definition and technological change. The seabed nodule collection vehicle has a significant influence on the achievable production rate and is for that reason thought to be a serious risk in developing an economical viable mining operation. GSR is currently working on a pre-prototype of a seabed nodule collection vehicle. The program, called ProCat, started in 2015 and will take up to end of 2019. ProCat can be split up in 2 phases: ‐ ProCat#1 [2015 – Q2 2017]: separate parallel testing of the nodule collection- and driving mechanism (Tracked Soil Testing Device Patania I – TSTD Patania I). The trafficability was tested in-situ; the collection mechanism was tested in a laboratory. Phase 1 has been completed successfully in September 2017. ‐ ProCat#2 [Q3 2017 – end of 2019]: the knowledge acquired during the first phase was used in this 2nd phase. Both collection mechanism and driving mechanism were integrated into the design of a pre-prototype seabed nodule collection vehicle (Pre-Prototype Vehicle Patania II – PPV Patania II). This pre-prototype vehicle will be used for a simulated mining test in Q2 of 2019 in the GSR- and BGR license area. The main objective of the ProCat research program, and especially the 2nd phase, is to integrate the nodule collector on the tracked chassis and develop an operating vehicle causing minimal environmental impact hereby validating the requirements for a full scale polymetallic nodule collection vehicle in the actual operational environment of the CCFZ. Following the ProCat project, GSR is working towards a system-integrated mining test once exploitation regulations have been agreed by the ISA and its member States.

Deepsea Mining will soon become a reality with Nautilus Minerals getting their equipment ready to mine SMS at Solwara 1 off the coast of Papua New Guinea. The vertical transport system (VTS) adopted by Nautilus consists of a riser hanging ‘freely’ from the mining production vessel with a lifting pump unit suspended at its lower end. A compliant jumper connects the pump to the seabed crawler without restraining its movements. In this free-hanging VTS arrangement, the vessel can be re-positioned to follow the crawler should it want to extend the mining area and start stretching the jumper. A recently proposed alternative to this is a free-standing VTS whereby the riser is grounded on the seabed with a base and maintained in an upright position by distributed buoyancy modules or a buoyancy tank at the top. A compliant jumper connects the seabed crawler to the riser base, and another connects the riser top to the vessel. In this free-standing arrangement, the entire VTS can be lifted clear of the seabed for relocation to a new mining area. This paper will describe the important features of the two options and discuss the advantages and disadvantages in respect of riser dynamic behavior, water depth, weather and mining windows, pump maintenance, installation and retrieval, continency measures, etc. The two systems will also be appraised separately for mining SMS and SMnN deposits.

"The exploitation of marine resources has enjoyed renewed interest with a completely new sector, that of the Deep Sea Mining of mineral resources in the seabed, that is now gaining momentum. Nevertheless, the significant environmental constraints represent a challenge for initiating these new activities, whether this is in terms of the knowledge of the concerned ecosystems or in terms of monitoring and minimizing the impact of these new activities. This paper presents 2 technologies that aim to respond to the expectations of the stakeholders in this area. The first consists of the real-time monitoring of installations/operations and their impact on the environment using the most modern underwater technologies and especially long-term deployment AUV based on AUV docking station solution and autonomous long term observatories. The second consists of a membrane allowing the confinement of an area, the reduction of the emission of particles in suspension and noise reduction.IntroductionDeep ocean environments have been explored since the mid-1800s. As the land-based reserves of hydrocarbons and minerals become depleted, increasing numbers of resourcebased projects are being proposed for shallow then deepwater environments. Two distinct resource sectors have recognized the potential commercial value of working in shallow and deepwater environments – Oil and Gas and now Mining."

The need for improved, high confidence estimates of nodule abundance to support mine permitting, detailed mine planning and mining and processing equipment design is evident. To date, physical samples represent the ?Gold Standard? for nodule abundance measurement, and are likely to remain as such. However, there are some interesting improvements in the area of 3-D scanning which, if marinized for operations at 6000m, may prove to be reliable alternative methods for mapping abundance over large areas particularly if calibrated or benchmarked with physical sample data. . Features of a high confidence physical sampling device, such as the 0.75m2 (0.86m on a side) box corer developed and successfully used by the Kennecott Group for exploration in the CCZ, take into account not only the accuracy in nodule sample collection but a host of other operability considerations which can mean the difference between a successful exploration cruise yielding high numbers of large area samples and one in which few, inaccurate, often inconclusive samples are collected (or, even worse, the sampler fails to grab any nodules for any number of reasons). The collection of physical samples at appropriate spacing within a mine area combined with more qualitative indications of nodule density such as can be obtained using acoustic backscatter should prove adequate for the near term objectives related to overall abundance appraisal or estimates of ?indicated? resource. Looking ahead, exploration cruises will need to yield increasing amounts of data to support development of higher confidence resource abundance estimates to support issuance of mining permits and detailed design of mining plans and equipment. The source of ore metals for base and precious metal volcanogenic massive sulfide (vms) deposits has been debated for decades. Metals can be obtained from high-temperature sea water-rock reactions in subseafloor circulatory hydrothermal systems, or provided by the magmatic fluids that are degassed from magma. The magmatic signatures are largely erased in the hydrothermal system by the overwhelming, long-term circulation of seawater. Melt inclusions in phenocrysts (plagioclase, olivine, pyroxene) of volcanic rocks provide an effective means of understanding the potential for a magmatic contribution to the ore-forming fluids. We present results of a melt inclusion study on the volcanic rocks that host active seafloor hydrothermal fields in the eastern Manus immature back-arc pull-apart basin of Papua New Guinea and an Ordovician-age back arc in New Brunswick, Canada that hosts the ?giant? (330 mmt) Brunswick #12 vms ore deposit. A fluid phase is typically observed in cavities within melt inclusions, indicating that the magma was saturated with volatiles prior to its eruption. The fluid is CO2-dominated with lesser H2O and CH4 in melt inclusions of mafic volcanics and is H2O-rich in felsic volcanics. Tiny crystals and amorphous precipitates (recrystallized at Brunswick #12) of Fe, Ni, Zn, Cu and Mn chlorides, sulfides and oxides coat the walls of the vapor cavities. The crystals include magnetite, magnesite, calcite, anhydrite, gypsum, barite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, halite, silicates and apatite. At Manus, the compositions of the precipitates on the bubble walls of melt inclusions are similar to those found in the vesicles in the matrix glass of the same sample. The ore metals in the volatile phases changed from Ni+Zn+Cu+Fe ? Cu+Zn+Fe ?Fe+Zn (+Pb?) as the magma evolved from basalt, basaltic andesite ? andesite, dacite ? rhyodacite, rhyolite. Glass of the melt inclusions compared to that of the matrix of the rocks from Manus have significantly higher concentrations of H2O (av. 1.64 vs 0.7wt%), Cl (av. 2500 vs1300 ppm) and S (av. 900 vs 100 ppm) suggesting that these volatiles were extensively exsolved from the magma. A minimum of 1.0 to 1.7wt% of magmatic volatiles is estimated to have been degassed before and during the eruptions. The focused discharge of a magmatic fluid as a result of pre-eruptive degassing could be responsible for the metals in the sulfide deposits on the seafloor. If 1 km3 of magma were emplaced in a shallow chamber, then the associated magmatic fluid would be 35.1 million tonnes. If this fluid contained 2.3 wt% Zn and 7.2 wt% Cu (Yang and Scott, 1996, Nature), a total of 0.8 million tonnes of Zn and 2.5 million tonnes of Cu would be to the hydrothermal system.

There are a number of likely impacts from mining operations, but a key issue is uncertainty about the environmental effects of sediment plumes created by disturbance to the seafloor and discharge of processed waters. The New Zealand National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) is undertaking a research project to improve understanding of such impacts (relevant to both mining and trawl fisheries), by examining the extent and persistence of sediment plumes, the immediate impact and subsequent recovery of seafloor exposed to these plumes, and the effect on functioning of ecologically significant species. The project will use a combination of field survey experimentation with in situ observations and controlled laboratory-based experiments. The field work begins in May 2018 when an area of up to 1km2 at depths of 400-500 m on the Chatham Rise, 450 km east the New Zealand South Island will be subjected to disturbance by an upgraded former NOAA Benthic Disturber. The suspended sediment load created by the disturbance will be tracked and monitored, with the effects on seafloor animals examined by pre-and post-disturbance sampling. A wide range of seafloor sampling, benthic landers, towed cameras, oceanographic moorings and water column monitoring will be carried out over a three week period. Monitoring surveys will be repeated in 2019 and 2020 to determine the longer-term resilience and recovery of disturbed communities. The laboratory-based side of the programme, also starting in 2018, involves holding live deep-sea corals and sponges in tanks at NIWA, and exposing them to various levels and duration of particle loads in the water in order to reveal lethal thresholds as well as sub- lethal effects of settled and suspended sediment.

IHC Merwede is world market leader in the construction of specialist dredging equipment; it is a company with a rich history. The Netherlands is a coastal western country for which water management is a very important issue. Without the enclosure of the coastal areas with dikes and dunes almost two third of the Netherlands would be flooded. These activities are mostly performed by the dredging industry and are the foundation of the dredging industry as it is today. Besides land protection this industry also carries out infrastructure maintenance and performs land reclamation projects. In essence the dredging industry is specialized in horizontal excavation activities and operations in shallow waters with the purpose of gathering bottom sediments and disposing it at a different location. The development is that the activities are moving to deeper waters to a depth of up to 150m. A few years ago IHC Merwede received a request to perform the shallow water excavation techniques at a depth of approximately 2000 meters for the deep sea mining market. In response to the increasing number of requests for deep sea dredging and mining application solutions, IHC Merwede combined all of its activities in this sector to create a new, specially equipped operational unit, IHC Deep Sea Dredging & Mining (IHC DSDM).

The particles that make up the deep-sea sediments have two main sources: 1) those that are created in situ from dissolved components and 2) those that are washed into the ocean in solid phases from the continents, atmosphere, space and interior of the Earth. Many particles as they sink through the water column reaches the seabed and are known as pelagic sediments with terrigenous, biogenic, authigenic, and cosmogenic components. Among the minerals found in the terrigenous fraction of pelagic sediments are quartz, clay minerals, feldspar, micas, ferromagnesians, and the biogenic fraction with remains of siliceous organisms, such as, radiolarian and diatoms. The chemical nature of marine sediments is controlled by the contribution of particulate matter derived from various sources with varying compositions for the fixing of elements during deposition and the compositional changes carried out within the sediments during diagenesis.
