"INTRODUCTIONEROCON's work is the reclamation of mine wastelands. It has had considerable experience in particular in the reclamation of gold mine tailings in the Canadian Shield since the latter part of the sixties when most gold mines were closing down.A typical example is the famous Hollinger Mine in Timmins which produced $566 million worth of metal from 1910 to 1968 and had left behind some 56 million tons of tailings covering about 1,000 acres which were reclaimed on very short order and are now lush meadows of agricultural quality.To date, practically all gold mine tailings have been reclaimed once and for all by establishing a permanent, self-sustaining and maintenance free vegetation cover.RECLAMATION & THE MINING TOWNSThe first appreciation of people in a mining community where the tailings have been revegetated will be noticing one day the elimination of dusty conditions that used to arise formerly on every dry and windy day. In that respect, EROCON encourages not only vegetating the tailings but also the immediate surroundings of the mills and plants themselves at active mines. The elimination of windborne dust will result in an appreciable decrease in maintenance costs of plant and machinery and more pleasant working conditions for all."

"The operation of the Louvicourt Mine will have to rely on stringent grade control and on the optimization of the amount of blocked ore made available per given development effort. All of the above being necessary to obtain the highest throughput at the lowest mining cost.To assist in achieving these objectives, the need for production of a competent fill with short curing time was recognized early by the project partners. As well, operating costs associated with the selected method should be as low as possible while meeting the technical criteria.A feasibility study comparing filling methods showed potential benefits in all aspects of the paste fill use, except for its higher capital costs and increased operational complexity. This last consideration was tackled by the conservative design approach adopted in the flowsheet development of the paste fill plant.Since commissioning of the plant has just been completed at this time, the paper will focus on the feasibility study and its background, the design of the plant and testwork results at pilot plant and plant scale.RésuméLe succès de l 'opération de Louvicourt Mine dépendra d' un contrôle serré des teneurs du minerai et de la maximisation de la quantité de minerai développée par effort uni ta ire. Ces critères devant etre respectés afin d'obtenir le taux de production le plus élevé au coût le plus bas.De façon à satisfaire ces contraintes, les partenaires du projet ont reconnu tôt la nécessité de produire un remblai de qualité tout en maintenant un temps de curage court. De plus, les coût d'opération associés a cette opération se devaient d'être des plus avantageux sans sacrifier l'atteinte des objectifs techniques.Une étude de faisabilité comparant différentes méthodes de remblayage a démontré que le remblai en pâte offre des aspects positifs sous taus les angles, si ce n'est de son coût en capital initial élevé et de sa complexité relative d'opération. Ce dernier point fut considéré de près par l'adoption d' une approche conservatrice lors de la conception de l'usine de rernblai.Puisque la mise en service de l'usine n'a été faite que les détails de l 'étude de faisabilité et ses fondements, 1 'usine et des résultats d' essais obtenus a l'échelle de l'usine seront discutés."

"Access to the outside world is supplied by the Alaska Highway to continental Canada and the United States, the Haines Highway, and by the White Pass & Yukon Route to Skagway and Vancouver. Communities and mining developments located along the Alaska Highway are supplied daily by truck transport with commodities originating in Whitehorse, Edmonton, and Vancouver.The average payload on the Alaska and Mayo Highway is in the order of 16 to 25 tons and is subject to government regulations. Highway haulage distances to railhead at Whitehorse vary as does the direction. The Clinton Creek asbestos development is located 395 road miles north-west of Whitehorse whereas the United Keno Hill operation is 287 miles to the north. Cassiar Asbestos is located in Northern British Columbia at a distance of 357 miles south-east of railhead at Whitehorse. In order to service these various mines multipurpose highway vehicles have been designed to allow maximum backhaul of petroleum products. The White Pass & Yukon Route was established as an integrated transportation system from 1955 when it became apparent that three non-integrated systems (ship, rail and truck), with the various paper work and rising costs, could not continue to serve the needs of Yukon. Integration became the company policy and a system was developed. A special container ship (Clifford J. Rogers) was designed and built. This was the first specially built container ship in the world. The northern container integrated system was operational in 1955.In 1965 over 8.5 million dollars were spent in upgrading the container facility and the construction of a tanker-container ship designed specifically to serve Yukon and Northern B.C. "When confronted with the difficult decisions on advancing an exploration project to the feasibility and construction stages, it is important to know how various regions of the ore body will react in the milling and concentration processes. While bench scale test work is common and inexpensive, the results and information provided are somewhat limited due to the difficulty in accurately predicting the effects of recirculating middling streams or gradual changes in solution chemistry.Conventional Pilot Plants, processing 100 to 1,000 kg/hour of sample ore, provide the detailed engineering data required to develop a final process flowsheet and to size the equipment. They are, however, expensive to set-up and operate, and are really only viable for major projects that are well advancedIn the latter part of 1999, the Mineral Development Center at CVRD (MDC) purchased a new piece of mineral processing equipment which can run continuous flotation tests using drill core samples. To evaluate its performance, and to compare it with conventional testing methods, various types of flotation tests were carried out using two different types of copper ore. The limitations and advantages of open circuit and locked cycle bench tests, as well as the Mini Pilot Plant and the Conventional Pilot Plant were evaluated.Open circuit tests carried out at the bench scale only provide basic information. More complete and trustworthy information is obtained, in terms of the recirculation of flows and reaching a permanent and stable flotation regime, as the dynamics and complexity of the tests increases. The data obtained showed that the MPP’s metallurgical performance was equivalent to that of a conventional pilot plant."

This paper reviews the formation of the Canadian Mining Education Council (CMEC) and its terms of reference. CMEC considers that Canada?s mining schools represent a distinct competitive advantage to the Canadian Mining Industry. The core objective of CMEC is to reinforce the links between the constituent schools and their individual Industry Advisory Committees. The latter traditionally provide the schools with a great deal of guidance on a range of planning issues, including recruitment, curriculum, research and infrastructure. Beyond those bounds CMEC intends to improve its ability to network with the industry and government. It is concerned overall with the objective to raise the quality and level of its educational and research contributions to meet the needs of industry and society.

"Gas dispersion studies have been used to benchmark and optimize plant flotation performance for more than a decade, although this technology is not as widely in use as it likely should be based on the significant improvements that have been reported. Part of the reason may be a general lack of awareness within the industry of just what these improvements have been. This paper reviews a number of the reported case studies, groups them into categories of improvement, and draws some general conclusions. The paper will be of interest to plant engineers and technology providers seeking new approaches and tools for improving their own and clients’ processes.INTRODUCTIONThe sector of flotation hydrodynamics that is now known as gas dispersion technology, and the corresponding terminology, had its beginnings in the 1980’s and early 1990’s in the laboratories of McGill University where the students of Prof. J.A. Finch and Dr. C. Gomez conducted studies of gas holdup, superficial gas rate and water recovery on laboratory flotation columns (Laplante et al., 1983; Xu et al., 1991;, Banisi and Finch, 1994; Finch et al., 1999; Nesset, 2011). Sensors were developed for gas holdup (eg), gas rate (Jg) and bubble size (Db) distribution (Tavera et al., 1996: Finch et al., 1999; Dahlke et al., 2001; Chen at al., 2001; Hernandez-Aguilar et al, 2002, 2005). The sensor measurements were rapidly adapted for use in mechanical flotation machines in plant environments (Gomez and Finch, 2002; Gomez et al., 2003; Cooper et al, 2004; Torrealba-Vargas et al, 2004; Nesset et al., 2007). Somewhat parallel developments were being conducted by Gorain and colleagues at the University of Queensland’s JKMRC on pilot and industrial flotation machines using the McGill approach but utilizing alternate sensor designs for eg, Jg and Db (Gorain et al., 1997, 1999; Schwarz and Alexander, 2006) to link flotation kinetics to bubble surface area flux (Sb). Early industrial applications were those led by the university teams from McGill (Canada), the JKMRC (Australia) and the University of Santa Maria (Chile) at plants in North and South America, Australia, South Africa, Asia and Europe. Industrial organizations that brought the technology on-board in the early 2000’s included Teck Resources (then Teck Cominco), COREM, Vale (then Inco), Anglo American Platinum. Several of the major flotation cell manufacturers also purchased the McGill bubble viewer technology for their own equipment studies. The sensors have continued to evolve with multiple and continuous measurement of Jg (Torrealba-Vargas and Finch, 2006, Bartolacci et al., 2008), gas holdup by acoustic means (O’Keefe, 2007) and a combined Jg-Db device called the Anglo Bubble Sizer (Harbort and Schwarz, 2010). A review of the gas dispersion technology use and development have been provided by Gomez and Finch (2002), Harbort and Schwarz (2010) and Nesset (2010)."

It is well-known that the particle breakage mode that occurs in a semi-autogenous mill is significantly different from that which occurs in a ball mill, enough so to warrant very different lab scale breakage tests and scale-up models. This phenomenon, at the plant scale, leads to changing process constraints depending on the particular properties of the ore. For example, hard or coarse ores might bottleneck the SAG/AG mill throughput, while the ball mills might constrain throughput when milling soft or fine ores. Because the power draw of a ball mill is fairly constant compared to that of a SAG/AG mill, periods of SAG/AG mill bottlenecks lead to increased ball mill circuit specific energy consumption and a finer grinding circuit product size, which together constitute a loss of efficiency of the overall process. Because HPGR circuit throughput is less sensitive to changes in ore hardness, this situation is less common or severe in those circuits. Furthermore, the ball mills are somewhat decoupled from the upstream crushing circuits through the use of surge bins, which also helps to mitigate this effect. As a result, ore hardness variability constitutes a significant cost penalty that should be applied to SAG mill/ball mill/pebble crusher SABC circuits when evaluating the relative economics of different grinding circuit configurations. Nevertheless, the issue is by-and-large ignored, because most current HPGR trade-off studies are based on averaged ore hardness parameters. This paper provides an estimate of the magnitude of this penalty for a typical operation by using Monte Carlo simulation methods and plant data from Freeport-McMoRan?s autogenous, semi-autogenous, and HPGR-based comminution circuits. A case study from an in-house 96K t/d sulphide project is presented to illustrate the concept. It was found that by including variability effects, the trade-off NPV of the HPGR circuit over that of the SAG mill circuit increases to $84 million from negative $33 million, effectively reversing the original decision of selecting a SAG mill circuit for the fixed hardness case.

"INTRODUCTIONThe Hemlo area is located in Northern Ontario, some 350 km east of Thunder Bay along highway 17. Hemlo is Canada's largest, recent discovery of gold ore. Three companies, Lac, Noranda, and Teck are currently developing mines and processing facilities in the area. A combined milling capacity of approximately 10,000 tonnes per day will ultimately be available in the area. The gold yield will be between 750,000 to 1,000,000 ozs. per year. This will slightly more than double Ontario's gold production but only represents 2.5% of the total world gold production.Lac Minerals Ltd. is substantially committed to the gold mining business. Lac currently operates four (4) gold mines and mills and produces 300,000 ozs. per year. Lac's Hemlo development will put the company in the position of number one gold producer in Canada.The Lac Hemlo ore body has an estimated reserve of 37 million tonnes at 6.2 g/t. The mining will take place at an initial rate of 3,000 t/d commencing in the first quarter of 1986. The mine and plant will be expanded to 6,000 t/d in 1988. At this capacity, Lac will be the largest producer in the Hemlo area.1. GEOLOGYThe orebody is divided into two (2) zones for mining purposes. The 'A' Zone is to the east and dips to the Northeast from surface to 300 m below surface. This zone has a strike length of 250 m to 300 m at an average width of 20 m. The upperpart of the zone will be mined by open pit and the remainder from underground. The 'B' Zone, to the north west of the 'A' Zone, although lined up is not necessarily an extension of 'A' Zone. 'B' Zone has a known strike length of 600 m and is open to depth and along the strike. It is over 70 m wide in the core. This zone holds most of the property's known reserves. 'C' Zone with narrow gold zones is under exploration in the south west portion of the property."

"Canada became the world's largest uranium producer in 1984. That leadership position is likely to be maintained for many years into the future because of a firm production base, many undeveloped known deposits with commercial promise, and a large geologicalpotential for new discoveries.There are some uncertainties on the horizon, principally because of restrictive actions in process within the U.S.A., which are aimed at preserving a deteriorating domestic uranium industry. Should such actions result in import restrictions, for example, there would be a negative effect on foreign producers at least in the short term. Canada may avoid such difficulties under a tentative U.S.-Canada free-trade agreement where restrictions on the import of Canadian uranium into the United States would be eliminated. Over the longer term, demand for Canada's uranium resources will grow because of the foreseen growth in the world's installed nuclear power capacity. IntroductionSince the phenomenon of nuclear fission was discovered in 1938, the utilization of uranium has grown substantially. Initially, the principal use for uranium was in the production of nuclear weapons. However, once civilian nuclear power reactors began to be built in the 1950s, an increasing fraction of uranium output was directed to the production of fuel elements for use in electricity generating stations.The cumulative uranium production by those countries in the World Outside Centrally-Planned-Economies Areas, WOCA, during the period 1938 to 1985 exceeded 800 000 tonnes of uranium. Some 60% of that was mined in the United States and Canada, as indicated in Figure 1. In 1986, nearly 80% of WOCA output came from five countries, Canada, United States, South Africa, Australia, and Namibia, as indicated in Table 1 and illustrated in Figure 2.During the past decade the world annual consumption of nuclear energy has more than tripled (Fig. 3). As of December 31, 1986, the world total of nuclear power reactors had reached 394 with a total net capacity of 270 GWe. The thermal output from nuclear power plants in 1985 exceeded 60% of the energy contained in all of the oil produced that year in the Middle East. Thus, nuclear power has already become an important component in the world energy supply picture."

"Paste backfill as a means of supporting underground mining is gaining popularity. Despite this trend, engineering and design of mine paste backfill systems are still largely based on empirical methods rather than established scientific principles. Because of a lack of sound understanding of mineral paste flow, some degree of trial and error is often involved during commissioning and operating of new paste fill systems. New operations often have to be built with flexibilities and contingencies, escalating the overall project costs.Disciplines that can lend some science to mineral paste flow include slurry transport, fresh concrete rheology, and soil mechanics. This paper reviews the applicability of some scientific and engineering principles found in those related disciplines to mineral paste flows. Examples are given to illustrate important points. The phenomenon of mineral paste flow is examined from new perspectives. Gaps in our understanding of mineral paste rheology are identified and from those some future research directions naturally emerge. Status and problems of the current engineering and design practice are also briefly discussed.INTRODUCTIONPaste backfill as a means of supporting underground mining is gaining popularity. In such a case the operators have to re-climb the learning curve, sometimes with expensive disruptions to the mining operation."

Two comprehensive surveys, which focus upon backfill practices and the economics of backfilling in underground mines in Canada, have been conducted. The two surveys were designed to assess operational practices and costs associated with the wide scope of filling operations that must be met by individual mines, ranging from raw material feed to the preparation plant, through underground backfill transportation, to in-stope product placement. This paper presents the current state of backfill usage in Canada, identifies trends in minefill practices and provides mine operators with an updated database of information upon which they might compare their own practices and costs with present trends throughout the industry.

The Meadowbank mine is operated by Agnico-Eagle Mines Ltd. and is located in the Kivalliq District of Nunavut in northern Canada. The process plant operates presently at a throughput of 11,500 tpd with gold grade varying between 2.9 and 3.6 g/t. The ore supplied to the process plant come from two different open pits and it expected to come from a new open pit early 2014. The ore is mid-hard materials so the feed size ore have a bigger impact on the throughput. The average gold recovery is 94.0% with about 15-30% of gold recover from the gravity circuit. The Meadowbank mine commissioning started in February 2010 utilizing a flowsheet consisting of one stage of crushing followed by primary and secondary grinding. The commercial production began in March 2010. During the commissioning several difficulties were observed to reach the designed throughput of 8,500 tpd. It was evaluated to insert a second stage of crushing. The insertion of the secondary crushing have two objectives, first to reach easily the process plant design throughput as well as to evaluated the mill capacity increasing. The process plant team evaluated various expansion alternatives eventually deciding to install a secondary crusher, increased the SAG and Ball mills motors capacities and maintain the rest of the process unchanged. Early 2011, with the improvement in the gold markets, decision was made to install the secondary crusher between the primary crusher and the primary grinding. The process plant continued to operate on the initial design until early June 2011. This paper presents the SAG mill throughput increasing from the designed tonnage of 8,500 tpd to 2012 targeted tonnage of 11,500 tpd, secondary crusher commissioning and the difficulties to operate in Canada Artic (Nunavut).

"Wholly owned by the Coniagas Mining Company, the oldest continuously listed mining company on the Toronto Stock Exchange, St. Andrew Goldfields is located on Hwy. 101 approximately 30 miles east of downtown Timmins, Ontario. Geographically situated on the Porcupine-Destor Fault, the mine and mill in Stock township is positioned in the heart of Northeastern Ontario's goldmining communities.In July 1988, a 600 ft. shaft, hoist, and compressors were already in place when construction started on a 500 T.P.D. capacity C.I.P. mill and crushing plant.By June 15, 1989 the mill was commissioned and attained the design capacity by August of that same year. Since then, changes to the circuit have increased throughput to 900 T.P.D. from two significantly different ore sources.Meeting the Ministry of the Environment's guidelines is an ongoing commitment utilizing the Inca S02 process in line between the tailings pond and secondary polishing pond.INTRODUCTIONExploration on what is now known as St Andrew Goldfields' Stock Township Mine was carried out ln the early l960 1 s by Hollinger Mines Ltd. The property was acquired by Quebec Sturgeon River Mines 1n 1973 and the main shaft was started ill 1979.When St Andrew Goldfields was incorporated 1n 1983, exploration and development commenced to identify the ore body. The company decided 1n 1987 to bring the Stock township property into production after an extensive feasibility study and testwork at Lakefield Research in Toronto. Manitoba Mining and Milling operations consist of three underground mines (Thompson T1, T3 and Birchtree), feeding the Thompson Mill. Three years ago, a collaborative effort involving Mines Exploration, Mines Project Development Group, Mill Technical Services and Vale Base Metals Technical Excellence Center was initiated to establish and verify the cause of high variability in concentrate quality and Ni recovery at the Thompson Mill. One outcome of this work was a program to systematically characterize the mineralogy and metallurgical performance of current and future orebodies feeding the mill. Mineralogy results show that high value enabling ores typically have a high pentlandite to pyrrhotite ratio and benign silicate mineralogy (mostly quartz and feldspar from sedimentary host rocks), while metallurgically challenging ores contain some combination of pyrite and/or hexagonal (non-magnetic) pyrrhotite and/or elevated quantities of talc (with associated carbonates) derived from altered ultramafic host rocks. The metallurgical performance of these two ore types has been simulated by an Excel particle flotation model, which calculates the relative floatability of particles based on the particle’s mineral composition and mineral locking determined from MLA images. The relationship between these mineral properties measured by MLA and metallurgical performance was established using 13 monthly composite samples from Thompson Mill. The model was then validated with results of laboratory flotation experiments on individual orebodies submitted for evaluation. The validated model can be used to predict plant metallurgical performance based on individual ore bodies feeding the mill. Individual orebody’s grade-recovery curves are assumed to be additive, and can be weighted in proportion to the mill feed to predict mill recovery over the same time period. The ore mixing can be done with a simple Excel spreadsheet and comes with a graphical output for easy visualization of the resulting grade-recovery curve.

"The planning and construction of prime coking coal beneficiation plants in the nationalized mines in India are reviewed. Flow schemes, construction practice, materials consumption, and costs are detailed.Medium-capacity beneficiation plants with multiple loops are recommended under Indian conditions.IntroductionThe reserve of high-grade and easily washed metallurgical coal in India are quite limited. Prime coking coal constitutes approximately 22% of the total resources and occurs exclusively in the Jharia coalfield in the state of Bihar. Bharat Coking Coal Limited (a subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL) the nationalized mining sector of India) owns 80% of the Jharia collieries. The development of Jharia coalfield in the pre-nationalized period before 1971 has been characterized by a large number of small mines with primitive mining methods and low productivity. The production of prime coking coal to meet the demand of the steel industry in India has to increase from the existing level of 11.1 million tonnes to 43.4 million tonnes per annum by 2000 AD, thereby producing 5.61 million tonnes and 22.7 million tonnes of clean coal respectively. An ambitious program has been undertaken for development of bigger mines with an average production of 1 to 3 million tonnes per annum. With the fast dwindling reserves of good quality coking coal, more inferior grade coal seams, having difficult washing characteristics, are now being mined. All the coal from the future mines will have to be beneficiated to make it suitable for consumption of steel plants; the following washeries are being planned for construction by 2000 AD:"

"Up until the mid 1960's, the only available methods for making continuous weight measurements were through the use of mechanical and electro-mechanical weigh scales. It was during this time period that a new concept in weighing was introduced. It was known and is still known as the nuclear belt weigh scale.During the early days of its appearance in the market place, many things were learned about its advantages and disadvantages for weighing various materials. As with many new devices, it had to go through a ""wringing out stage"" before it became accepted by the weighing industry. Even today, even though it is a proven device, there are skeptics who believe the nuclear belt weigh scale will not survive. Let me assure you, it is here to stay.. 'PRINCIPLE OF MEASUREMENTThe nuclear belt weigh scale consists of a ""C"" Frame assembly which houses the radioactive source (Cesiwn 137) and the radiation detector (Ionization chamber). The ""C"" Frame assembly is put in place around the conveyor belt as shown in Figure 1. The radiation source emits a fan shaped beam of radiation which covers the full width of the material being conveyed on the belt. Radiation which has passed through the material on the belt is detected by the ionization chamber which is located in the lower arm of the ""C"" Frame assembly. The ionization chamber changes the radiation energy into an electrical signal which is related to pounds per foot belt loading. This signal is transmitted to a highly stable amplifier which combines the pounds per foot signal with a belt travel signal from a digital tachometer which allowed the scale user to be able to monitor total mass being conveyed. Many so-called conventional type scales use belt speed rather than travel to obtain mass per unit time, and then integrate the signal to obtain their weight signal. This unnecessary step tends to erode the overall accuracy of the weighing system."

Other screen openings and configurations have been tried and the screen has been by-passed to change the cloth ""on the fly"". These attempts resulted in fibres (usually wood) to report to #1 Carbon-In-Pulp (CIP) tank, where the fibres are trapped in the CIP launder screens, and downstream carbon handling screens causing serious blinding problems. The trash screen in a Carbon-In-Pulp (CIP) or Carbon-In-Leach (CIL) gold mill removes fibres before they:are reground in the ball millsaturate with gold bearing leach solutionplug launder screens in CIP or CIL tanksplug carbon circuit pipe screenstherefore the trash screen is best placed ahead of the thickener."
