This work was commenced at a time when information on the manufacture of cemented tungsten carbide was urgently needed in Australia. Much information of a general type has been published, but many of the details of the processes used are still undisclosed. The aim of this research was to determine a satisfactory way in which cemented tungsten carbide could, be made, and to investigate the problems which are associated with the process. As the work proceeded, its ramifications grew continually, and it was necessary to limit the possible lines of investigation. After much experimental work, a 9% cobalt-tungsten carbide alloy was developed which had satisfactory properties when used as a cutting tip. The effect of certain variables on the properties of this particular alloy was investigated.The tungsten carbide was prepared in stages from King Island scheelite concentrates under strict laboratory control, whilst the cobalt (1) used was made from cobalt oxide prepared from crude cobalt oxide obtained from Eisdon.In order to clarify the detailed experimental work, a brief summary of the method used for the preparation of cemented tungsten carbide follows.Tungsten carbide and cobalt are prepared in a very finely powdered state, and are then thor,oughly mixed by a ball milling operation. The resultant mixture is pressed in a suitably shaped die into small compacts which are subsequently '''presintered,'' i.e., heated' in hydrogen between 800°C. and 1000°C. The final sintering is carried out in hydrogen between 1,400°C.and 1,600°C. for about half an hour. These "alloys" may contain from 3 to 13% cobalt, depending on the particular properties required of them.PREPARATION OF MATERIALSThe tungsten oxide prepared as described by Smithells (2) was extremely finely divided, and after a few hours' grinding in a ball mill, the powder consisted of material below 10 microns iJ;l size. The oxide was reduced to tungsten metal with hydrogen in a tube furnace. The reduction was carried out at 800-900° C., a rapid flow of hydrogen being maintained in order to remove the water vapour' formed as a result of the reactions:

General recognition of the potential benefits of utilizing advanced technology has focussed public attention on the organisation of tertiary education. This has produced a situation where opportunities exist for significant changes to be implemented. The challenges to Mining education in this environment of change are analysed with respect to the setting of education objectives, the role of centres of education, course structures and student access to courses. The scope of the analysis includes formal courses for professional education and technical training, and programmes for continuing education and postgraduate research. Previous significant advances in mining technology illustrate the importance of encouraging the establishment of an extensive involvement with mining education. Education cannot be the sole responsibility of professional academic organizations; significant industry participation is essential. Methods of achieving this interaction are discussed. Major changes in techniques available for disseminating information provide a significant incentive to assess the relevance of existing course structures and restrictions on student access to courses. Establishment of a less rigidly progressive system of education is discussed with respect to the development of the full potential of computer based learning. This will expand the availability of mining education to include remote locations. The practical feasibility of such changes and recognition of the value of education as a commercial resource could also increase overseas involvement in Australian mining education. Benefits of such changes and problems that may develop if accreditation systems are not also changed to take account of new technology are outlined.

Economically significant gold-silver mineralization occurs in Miocene andesitic flows and tuffs at Golden Cross, eight kilometres northwest of Waihi, New Zealand. The highest grade mineralization occurs in a steeply dipping elongate zone of strong quartz veining and brecciation underlying, but contiguous with, a gently dipping tabular quartz vein stockwork containing potentially open-pittable lower grade gold-silver mineralisation. The stockwork zone is enveloped by argillic alteration and overlain by unaltered Pliocene andesites and recent tephra. Evaluation of the prospect involved underground and surface geologic mapping, rock and soil geochemistry, IP-resistivity, magnetic and gravity surveys as well as 1844 metres of reverse circulation drilling and over 30 000 metres of core drilling. The paper outlines the exploration history of the area and describes the results of the various exploration techniques used at Golden Cross.

Formation of either sodium jarosite or lead jarosite from concentrated chloride solutions containing small concentrations of sulphate has been demonstrated. Sodium jarosite is precipitated at 95-100°C from FeC13-FeCI2-NaCI-PbCI2 solutions to which was added Na2SO4 or Li2SO4 in amounts greater than 0.05 M. In the absence of alkali metal ions capable of forming jarosites, lead jarosite was precipitated from either FeCI3-PbCI2 or FeCI3-FeCI2-LiCI-PbCI2 solutions to which had been added small amounts of sulphate. Many of the factors affecting jarosite precipitation from chloride solution have been elucidated, and the most critical were sulphate concentration and initial pH. Concentrations of HCI in excess of O. I M essentially suppressed the production of jarosite in chloride media. Alkali jarosite, precipitated in the presence of dissolved lead, incorporates a small amount of this metal into the alkali jarosite lattice. Small but significant amounts of copper can also be incorporated into alkali jarosite and the amount is further increased in the presence of lead. Other divalent base metals such as Zn, Cd or Ni are not significantly precipitated. Sulphate control in either FeCI3 or FeCl3-NaCI leaching systems could likely be maintained by jarosite precipitation provided that the acid concentration of the solution was low.

The coal measures of the South Wales coalfield contain at least 50 horizons at which coal seams are known, to occur. More than 300 samples of coal were collected from these coal measures and this paper outlines thefindings of an investigation of the pattern and distribution of 12 trace elements in South Wales coals. A comparison of trace element contents of the South Wales coals is made with trace element values found elsewhereand an attempt was made to establish the organic affinity of the elements in different seams and in the coalfield 'as a whole. An important function of such an analysis is to determine the order of abundance of trace elements and this was performed for individual seams and for the whole coalfield.The interrelationship of certain elements in some seams is also examined with a view to understanding the effectiveness of such an approach to seam correlation.Ranges of values are quoted together with the mean values of the various elements. Variations of elemental values within a seam section and over the coalfield as a whole are discussed.

Syria has about 500 million ton deposit of minerals having 34 per cent iron content with alumina and silica as major impurities. Efforts were made to see the feasibility of concentration by four different methods involving washing, high intensity magnetic separation, reduction roasting and magnetic separation and acid leaching technique. It was observed that the reduction roasting with magnetic separation yields a concentrate with high iron (62.3 per cent) content without requiring water which is a scarce raw material in the region. The paper concludes that the detailed study may be made following this route to optimise the process Parameters.

Mining is a fundamental activity on which modern society and the world's economy are entirely dependent. Mining investors, large and small, invest on an international scale, frequently being active in several countries.   Prior to committing investment to new countries, the prudent investor will consider the risk involved by analysing a number of physical, financial, administrative and political parameters that impact on the potential financial returns it is seeking. This paper considers these risk factors in relationship to New Zealand and six competitor countries. The conclusion is that for reasons largely within the control of our politicians, New Zealand is a high risk country for mining investors.

In spite of the many contributions that have been made to our knowledge of the creep properties of polycrystalline lead, the precise influence of various factors on these properties is not yet fully understood. Indeed, the position is such that several important points in connection with the creep of lead are a matter of controversy. This has been brought about largely by the fact that, in the case of lead, the changes that are produced in the creep behaviour by slight variations of such factors as the purity, grain sizeand previous treatment are out of all proportion to the magnitude of these variations.In order to study the fundamental properties of lead as related to creep, and so gain a more enlightened perspective with which to consider the creep of lead in general, the work that is described in a series of papers, of which the present paper is the third part, has been carried out. It deals with lead in the form of single crystals.It has been shown (1) - (3) that the grain boundaries as well as the actual grains play a part in the creep of polycrystalline lead. The present work, by eliminating grain boundaries, enables the. contribution of the grains themselves to the process of creep, in other words, crystalline creep, to be studied effectively.This object was, possibly, the major one in this work.

The cyclone, or centrifugal separator, ,is firmly established in industry as a low cost separator of solids from gases.While it will also separate fluids of different densities, and solids from liquids, its main use is to remove relatively fine dusts from gases whose pr~erties are generally not greatly different from those of air. This latter phase of operation is the one that will be dealt with here.The duty of such a cyclone separating system is to take in a supply of dusty gas and separate it into its components of dust and clean gas as perfectly as possible for the least consumption of pressure head. Any separation at all causes pressure loss and, in general, the greater the separation, the greater the pressure drop needed to effect it. The percentage of dust in suspension which is separated from the gas-dust mixture is commonly called the collection or separation efficiency. Overall or "true" efficiency must take pressure drop into account and may be considered as proportional to the ratio of the percentage of dust collected to the resultant pressure drop. For any cyclone It will vary with different dusts.Many commercial adaptions of the simple cyclone are made solely on the basis of pressure drop improvement, without taking into account the effect on separation efficiency, probably because the latter is so difficult to assess correctly. It appears unfortunate but true that the majority of such adaptions and patent gadgets fitted to cyclones which decrease pressure drop, do have an adverse effect on separation. In other' words, the true efficiency is seldom increased but often diminished.Without a knowledge of what actually goes on inside a cyclone, it is impossible fully to appreciate the real effect of a modification. Operations of the new copper smelter at Mount Isa commenced on the 6th February, 1953. Prior to this date a paper by R. V. Anderson (1953) outlined the smelter layout, proposed operation and expected performance.Nominally a 50-ton per day plant, output is currently at the rate of 85 long tons per day. In the first 3t years, of operation to 30th June, 1956, '71,339 tons of blister copper were produced. Operation has been stabilized' and a number of modifications to plant and operation have been made. This paper reviews the progress made to date.GENERAL LAYOUT AND EQUIPMENTThe general layout and equipment follows well-established practice as study of Figs. 1 to 4, and Appendix II will show. This diagrammatic representation of layout (Fig. 1) and flow sheet (Fig. 2) is intended for the purpose of brevity to take the place of a detailed plant description.Choice of site for the smelter was limited by the necessity for close proximity of the waste heat boilers to the powerhouse.Much excavation was necessary before foundation work commenced, but the plant is compact and further expansion is possible.CHARGE MAKE-UPRoaster charge initially comprised concentrates, purchased ores, revert materials, mine sulphide ore and barren sand. As purchased ore receipts increased and as domestic black rock oxidized ore became available, the latter two fluxes were eliminated from the charge. Fluxes at minus i-in. sizing are trucked from crushing plant or stockpile by motor lorries. Filtered mill concentrates are dropped from an overhead conveyor on to the storage patio floor adj acent to the two concentrate bins.

Being a source of structural materials for many centuries, the modern image of the ferrous metallurgy is burdened with obsolete technologies with disregard towards new environmental protection requirements. The production cycle of metallurgical products have two clear-cut stages: I . production of liquid metal and casting into steel billets; and 2. processing of steel billets in solid state under high temperature to produce various shapes and profiles of metal products. Plastic deformation of metal at the second stage is least associated with environmental pollution and is presently being provided with more and more advanced equipment.

A predicted increase in aluminium production and the possibility of a diminishing supply of petroleum coke for anode electrodes in alumina reduction cells makes it desirable to find alternative electrode materials. Browncoal char, with a lower ash content and with an elemental purity similar to petroleum coke, was produced by leaching in hydrochloric acid, washing with water, and charring at 1,150°C. The cost of processing is estimated tobe competitive with petroleum coke.Without further processing the bulk density and real density were undesirably low, but by briquetting the coal before charring and crushing, the bulk density was improved to 92 per cent of the petroleum coke value andthe particle density was improved to 92 per cent of the density of petroleum coke by water displacement or 75 per cent by mercury displacement.Pre-baked electrodes were prepared from the char alone, mixtures of petroleum coke and char, and from petroleum coke alone, all bonded with coal tar pitch.The electrodes were tested for the usual physical properties and were evaluated for performance in a laboratory size alumina reduction cell.Electrodes based on brown coal char alone were found to be inferior in physical properties and performance, but mixtures of the char and petroleum coke, despite poorer density, electrical resistivity, and carbon consumptionon a theoretical basis, in performance tests gave up to 17 per cent better carbon consumption per weight of aluminium produced and 21 per cent better electrical current efficiency than the electrodes based on petroleum,coke alone.It is suggested that larger scale tests are warranted.

The Fraser Range is composed dominantly of basic pyroxene granulites derived from basalts, many of which appear to have been vesicular and pillowed. Acidic and basic garnet-bearing granulites are important in the west, and acidic granulites and narrow anorthosite layers are dominant in some regions east of the Fraser Range. An extensive flat-lying olivine gabbro sheet cuts the granulites, and in places has been converted to spineI-bearingmeta-gabbros and pyroxene granulites. The granulites of the Fraser Range (Proterozoic) are separated from the gneisses and schists of the goldfields regions (Archaean) by the Fraser Fault, over which there is a large gravity anomaly (gradient 20 milligals per mile). Some of the problems associated with the concentration of Cu, and Ni liberated from mineral lattices during metamorphism, and other principles of metal concentration in granulite terranes, are discussed. The recognition of vesicular and pillowed zones, even though highly metamorphosed, is of fundamental importance.

This paper endeavours to lay as concisely as possible, before the members the salient features of local gold milling practice, and to point out in what respects this practice differs from that of other large mining camps. This is essentially a free milling ore the gangue being quartz and the gold occurring in a coarse form. At times the ore crushed contains a good deal of slate, the latter imparting to the tailings a somewhat leaden hue.Small amounts of sulphides, chiefly iron pyrites, and at times smaller quantities of arsenical pyrites, zinc blende, and galena are contained in the stone. The average amount of sulphides contained in the ore cannot well be ascertained, as the concentrate obtained in all cases contain too much silica to form a basis of calculation...

The Greymouth Coal Project is a proposal to mine by the application of proven hydraulic, and room and pillar underground mining methods; and to process the equivalent of an average of 1.7 million tonnes per year over a forty-year period. The proposed mine site is located ten kilometres north of Greymouth, on the west coast of the South Island of New Zealand. Of the three separate mineable seam groups, the thick Main Seam Group, which makes up 77% of the total resource, will be mined by hydraulic mining technology.   It is proposed to market and produce a high volatile bituminous type coal with low ash (6%) and sulphur (0.4%). Because the inherent ash content is low, the requirement for coal treatment will only be the use of a single cell jig circuit to control the effects of rock dilution and partings. The resulting coal product is tentatively planned to be transported by rail to the port at Lyttelton for loading on to Panamax or Post Panamax size vessels.

Mine ore, reduced to minus 71/2 in. by primary crushers, is stockpiled. Size reduction of the reclaimed material by secondary and tertiary crushers is achieved in a closed circuit crushing and screening plant. Screen products of minus 30 mm plus 6 mm lump, and minus 6 mm fines are stockpiled by conveyor and stacker systems prior to rail despatch 10 port facilities at Dampier. Crusher settings, determined from experience, are closely maintained to obtain the desired lump/fines ratio. Chemical and sizing analyses from automatically taken samples are used to maintain product specifications. The beneficiation plant upgrades the fines product when this is necessary. The recorded wear life of individual plant components is the basis of a planned maintenance programme.

This paper presents measurement and analysis of the dynamic response of a five-storey building to very high frequency excitation (>100 Hz) from blasting vibrations originating from a contiguous excavation of rock. Velocity response measurements in the rock and on the structure were employed to calculate the time-correlated dynamic displacement response of the building to blasting. Time-correlated structure response measurements are needed to advance the understanding of the response of urban structures to high-frequency excitation. Current regulations and understanding are based upon measurements of the response of one- to two-storey residential structures by 10 to 40 Hz excitation. The extension of these observations to taller structures when excited by high-frequency excitation needs to be investigated further.Measurements show that the amplification patterns at the ground level and top of the structure match or are lower than that observed by the US Bureau of Mines (Siskind et al, 1980) for the shorter residential structures. They decrease with increasing peak particle velocity. From the measurements, the global transverse shear strains found by differentiating ground floor and top displacements were calculated to be 12 µstrains. Time-correlated bottom and top of structure displacements show that building response may be more reflective of wave propagation up the structure than whole-structure inter-storey drift.In addition, a 3D model was used to compare computed displacements and strains to measured results. Modelled responses varied considerably, both in magnitude and location of the maximum strain. No conclusion can be made regarding the best 3D model to employ to simulate building response. More data such as motions measured at many points in the structure are needed. Maximum inter-storey transverse shear strains calculated with the model were found through the acceleration excitation and were less than 12 µstrains for 37 mm/s rock motion excitation. Recent work on decoppering lead is reviewed CUS is formed rapidly even from dilute solutions of copper in lead. The mechanism of decoppering is discussed and an explanation for the retention of metals such as silver in lead is advanced. As decoppering tin appears to be an analogous process, the, Cu-Sn-S system is studied at 300°C.. CuS, which is not an equilibrium product, is found m decoppermg drosses. In the removal of nickel from lead, Ni3Pb2S2 is formed; preliminary measurements show the equilibrium nickel content to be greater than that obtained by stirring in sulphur. Decoppering bIsmuth IS thermodynamically favoured, but is complicated by the occurrence of CuBiS2 The Cu-Pb-S system IS the only one of the four studied where the equilibrium can be calculated simply, as the presence of ternary sulphIde or other phases invalidates calculations based on binary data.
