The objective of the draw strategy in a caving mine is to maximise economic return by minimising waste dilution3 and maximising ore recovery4. The draw strategy must also include suitable controls for air blast and mud rush hazards and is highly constrained until continuous cave propagation has been achieved. This paper details a three-year project at the Ernest Henry Mine (EHM), which used cave flow simulation software to develop a draw strategy that increased the mine value by 32 per cent.Dilution and ore loss can be significant in sublevel cave (SLC) operations and result in poor recovery and considerable economic losses. To minimise dilution and ore loss, cellular automata software was used to simulate cave flow over the mine life. The optimisation project required mining footprints for various cut-off grades to be developed. Draw strategies for each mine footprint were then generated using a range of shut-off grades. Economic assessment of each scenario was then conducted to determine the mine footprint and corresponding draw strategy that generated the highest NPV (net present value). The iterative simulation process was improved by developing automated software functions in the flow modelling software to reduce time taken to generate and assess life-of-mine (LOM) draw strategy scenarios.In addition to improving the NPV of the mine, the optimisation project also enabled a decrease in the mine cut-off grade which increased the ore reserve and extended the mine life. Overall, an iterative process of mine planning, cave simulation, economic evaluation and geotechnical analysis was used to significantly increase the economic return of the SLC whilst ensuring caving risks were controlled to an acceptable level.CITATION:Campbell, A D and Power, G R, 2016. The Otago Schist is crossed by numerous deformation zones that formed in the latter stages of metamorphism and uplift of the metamorphic belt. These deformation zones are long (tens of km) linear features at the regional scale, and are generally narrow (km scale or less). Many of these structural zones separate schist domains with different rock types and structural/metamorphic histories. The Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone is one such deformation zone, and this zone hosts the active Macraes gold mine. The Rise & Shine Shear Zone, 80 km NW of Macraes, is also enriched in gold and has been mined historically. Mineralisation in both these shear zones occurred during the transition from ductile to brittle deformation as the schist belt was uplifted from greenschist facies metamorphic conditions. Recrystallisation of quartz and micas in the early stages was overprinted by cataclasis, with sulfide and gold precipitation throughout. Many of the other late metamorphic deformation zones formed under similar greenschist to sub-greenschist facies conditions, with similar overprinting of recrystallisation textures and folds by more brittle textures such as breccias. Under these conditions, originally regionally pervasive deformation at the highest metamorphic grades was evolving towards more focussed high strain zones at lower temperatures and pressures. Shear zones initially focussed fluid flow along microshears and mineral grain boundaries, resulting in 1 to 100 m scale alteration and replacement in the host schist, with only local development of quartz veins. Fluid flow was not controlled by open fractures, and the rate of fluid movement was probably slow and pervasive. After uplift into the brittle regime, the schist belt underwent tectonic extension. Extension was accompanied by development of swarms of steeply dipping veins, with localised mineralised normal faults. Hydrothermal fluid flow throughout this uplift history was a normal consequence of late stage devolatilisation of the metamorphic belt. Hence, all late metamorphic deformation zones should be considered prospective for gold accumulation.

This contribution summarises new knowledge and data, obtained during a three year ARCAMIRA funded research project, on the mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of hydrothermal alteration associated with low sulfidation, gold-silver epithermal deposits. These data are used to develop exploration vectors for use at both deposit and district scales, plus techniques have been established to distinguish ore grade epithermal systems from barren or low grade systems. Deposits investigated were Ladolam, Papua New Guinea, Gosowong and Mt Muro, Indonesia, Cerro Vaguardia, Argentina and Bimurra and Twin Hills, Australia.

ignitions caused by cutting tools have occurred at a rate of some 14 per year in UK coal mines since 1965, mostly on the coalface. The rate has held steady despite reducing output and number of collieries. Investigations were carried out over this period into factors affecting both the concentration of firedamp in the cutting zone and the igniting source. A study into detecting and suppressing ignitions on shearers has been undertaken and it is feasible to prevent certain ignitions from spreading outside the cutting zone. Practical measures have been adopted by British Coal to identify frictional ignition sites and to lay down working procedures to minimise risk.

Thank you for this opportunity to address your conference on 'The role of coal in the New Zealand energy market'. New Zealand's energy market has, in common with much of New Zealand, undergone major change following the market reforms of the Labour Government. As far as the energy sector is concerned this change has been for the better, as it has created for the first time in a very long time a 'true economic market' for energy in New Zealand. This is in marked contrast to the previous regime where: ò Electricity was state operated, subsidised and cross subsidised. ò Oil was imported and subject to a raft of taxes and duties. ò Coal produced by state mines was priced by cabinet committee, based on other energy prices rather than on the costs of production and delivery of the energy product. Today, with the establishment of the SOE's we have a market of competitive supply, where the customer has the choice of energy with prices based on the true costs of production and delivery. This can only be good for the customer as the cost is now based on the real costs of production, not on political whim. So where does coal fit in this brave new world of free market energy supplies? Well, opportunity, they say, knocks but once.

The utilisation of low-grade raw materials such as fine iron ore and semi-soft coking coal, and reduction of CO2 emissions are important issues in the ironmaking process. To solve these issues, a new process called PosPRA (POSCO prereduced agglomeration process) has been developing at POSCO. It focuses on the reduction of carbon composite iron ore briquette in travelling grate. In this study, the possibility of manufacturing the prereduced agglomerate (PRA) under oxidising atmosphere with travelling grate and the optimum manufacturing conditions of carbon composite iron ore briquette are investigated. The results have shown that controlling the temperature and oxygen potential in the range from 1100 to 1200°C and below 10 vol per cent respectively is very important to increase the reduction efficiency of briquette in travelling grate. High quality properties of the green briquette and PRA could be manufactured by using the briquette mixed with 20 wt per cent of coal under 0.1 mm in size under compacting pressure in the range from 3 to 7 t/cm. Adding 1 wt per cent water as a binder is proper under the condition of high compacting pressure. In a pot grate test, the compressive strength and metallisation degree of PRA are achieved over 150 kgf/p and about 55 per cent respectively, at bed temperature 1150°C and oxygen potential of 10 vol per cent when 20 wt per cent of coal is mixed in the briquette.CITATION:Wang, M K, Son, S H, Park, J I, Jeong, H K and Cho, B K, 2017. Sensor-based ore sorting is being increasingly used to reduce the amount of low-grade and waste material processed in mineral concentrators. This type of preconcentration provides bottom-line benefits to users by reducing the amount of energy, water and consumables, as well as reducing capital cost. Existing operations can increase metal production, while previously uneconomic deposits and low-grade stockpiles can also be exploited. The technology can also be used to separate ore types for selective processing. The path to implementing sensor-based sorting may include:• geometallurgical evaluation• first inspection testing to investigate sensor response• bench-scale testing where sensor selection is not obvious or for difficult applications• performance testing in full scale sensor-based sorting machines• larger scale site-based piloting with a temporary semi-mobile plant installation. Sorting requires material to be suitably prepared and presented to the machines and typically this consists of crushing and screening to limit top size and optimise liberation. However, where material streams are suitably sized and prepared, additional equipment may not be required (e.g. the sorting of semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) Mill pebble streams).This paper presents a case study of economic upgrading of gold ore, by preconcentrating with sensor-based ore sorting. The case study examines sorting amenability, test work, the feasibility study through to implementation, with associated flow sheet development. The development process is analysed and evaluated with a view to rationalising the process for development of future projects. McArthur River Mine, in the Gulf Country of the Northern Territory, exploits one of worldÆs largest deposits of zinc, lead and silver. It was officially opened in September 1995, 40 years after its discovery in 1955. This paper describes the geological, engineering and metallurgical assessments which made up the feasibility study. It then relates how these study components compare with the first two years of operation. The challenges that had to be overcome before the McArthur River Mine became economically viable included the metallurgical problems associated with extremely fine grained ore and the development of an effective mining process.

There are a number of hurdles that must be negotiated in order to design an effective gold ore treatment facility such that the expectations forming the basis of project economics are valid and can be achieved in practice. Selecting samples based on geometallurgical context, performing and interpreting testwork relevant to the selected process flowsheet are essential considerations towards achieving this aim. The Halmahera Contract of Work is a sixth generation contract held 82.5 per cent by Newcrest Mining Limited and 17.5 per cent by PT Aneka Tambang and takes in the Gosowong Project area. In 1991 Newcrest Mining Limited established a small exploration office in Jakarta and proceeded to seek exploration opportunities. The Halmahera area was identified as a substantial prospective ground position in a relatively unexplored area. In late-1991 Newcrest Mining Limited and PT Aneka Tambang agreed to explore in Halmahera. Initial field work commenced in July 1992. A vigorous ground reconnaissance programme led to the discovery of the Gosowong deposit a little over 12 months later in September 1993. In April 1997 the Contract of Work was approved covering much of the island of Halmahera. Between September 1997 and November 1998 activities were directed principally towards obtaining the necessary permits required to commence construction activities. Some particularly ambitious targets were set for achieving this outcome. An aggressive construction programme commenced in late-1998. Construction took place during a period of unseasonally high rainfall, which in itself presented additional challenges to the construction team. A key milestone for the project was achieved on 1 July 1999 when wet commissioning of the process plant commenced. Construction of the Gosowong Mine was achieved on time and within budget. A period of some six years elapsed from the initial discovery of the Gosowong deposit to the time of the first gold pour. Much of the permitting, construction and commissioning activity took place between September 1997 and July 1999. This coincided with a period of significant social, economic and political upheaval in Indonesia. During the construction period a high level of importance was placed on the structured recruitment and training of local people, as well as fostering appropriate community and local business development programmes in the communities nearby the project. Emphasis was also placed on environmental management with detailed long-term planning and progressive rehabilitation commencing during the construction phase. The permitting and subsequent development of the Gosowong Project has demonstrated that even during the difficult times, with commitment, it is possible for mining and exploration companies to conduct business in Indonesia.

Last evening, in Auckland, I heard the Chairman of Heinz US, Dr Tony O'Reilly (who, in addition to Heinz's ownership of our largest food processor, also has substantial personal investments in this country), advocate New Zealand as a 'regional corporate capital'.   Why would someone like Dr O'Reilly hold that view? No doubt, as one of Ireland's great rugby players of the 50s and 60s, he admires at least one thing that we do very well (confirmed again in Dublin over the past weekend). But that's not sufficient to support such a view.   He cited many reasons for preferring New Zealand over, say, Sydney, Australia, calling this 'the most rational in which to locate [an] international headquarters', including û +         we have no capital gains tax; +         a more 'pro-business environment'; +         a 'first class' legal and banking system; and +         a 'simple political system'.   I can find no better 'text for today's address.

Landscape interpretation, geology and mining history is being successfully used to explore options for sustainable community tourism product development. Recent work by the author in Europe and Australia has indicated the value of adding and producing interpretive information about mine and quarry locations - both active and inactive. This work has allowed for the branding and development of new sustainable community tourism products based on the landscape, folklore, mine and geological heritage.   Communities in rural areas are seeking new opportunities to sustain their local economies. Using a relatively new phenomenon called geotourism as a starting point; they have developed themed products connected to walking/cycling guides, interpretive panels and visitor centres. These themes can be linked to geology, archaeology, botany, local history and to industrial heritage sites such as old mines, to generate local employment. This new geotourism approach has successfully brought a new and greater audience to discover the value of geology and mining history.   Communities have established a unique place for themselves within the tourism marketplace using the geotourism brand. Other communities with an established tourism product are also now using geological and mine heritage via geotourism to rebrand and meet changing global trends. The pooling of resources under the banner of geotourism has led to cost effective marketing, targeting and promotion of products.   Geotourism has emerged strongly in Europe, North America and China in the last decade. The Australian minerals industry now has an opportunity to implement this new branding concept to assist and benefit the communities in which they run their activities. Communities can also take advantage of the potential to develop a sustainable geotourism business around a past or present mineral industry in their vicinity.

During a mineral exploration program in an environmentally sensitive area nearMount Painter in South Australia, a helicopter was used to position, construct and service drilling rigs in order to avoid the need to create new access tracks. The drilling program was designed to optimise the advantages of natural landforms in order to minimise the environmental impact of site construction and drilling activities. This minimisation of land disturbance reduced the required amount of rehabilitation measures to the extent where all impacts of the helicopter-supported programme had disappeared within 12 months of completion of work.

Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) project C25073 was proposed by industry stakeholders seeking a potential solution that improves underground air quality and reduces operational costs associated with technology used to control diesel particulate emissions in the underground coal mining environment.The need to protect workers from diesel particulate matter (DPM) has lead the underground coal mining industry to install disposable filter systems on their vehicles. While the disposable filters are efficient at removing significant amounts of DPM, the following major issues have arisen:- high cost of operations; disposable filters cost $A250–300 each and need to be changed at least once per shift resulting in an estimated cost of up to $A164 M/a, in filters alone, to the NSW underground coal mining industry- improper installation, damaged seals and lack of installing a new filter when the old filter is removed; workers are still being exposed to excessive amounts of DPM.The ACARP project successfully demonstrated significant DPM emissions reduction comparable to the incumbent disposable technology on a proof-of-concept wall-flow diesel particulate filter (DPF) system, as well as satisfactory system robustness when assessed using an industry representative test cycle representing operations of a load haul dump (LHD) vehicle typical of that used by the Australian underground coal industry. It was noted in testing that the technology increased modal NO2 formation, but was compliant over typical operational duty cycles.One of the key benefits with the use of a wall-flow DPF system is its tamper-proof design, mitigating the risk of operating unfiltered diesel plant in poorly ventilated areas. Elimination of the need for continual replacement of disposable filters provides significant operational savings estimated to be up to 80 per cent of the incumbent technology.In addition to the above, the project also delivered a number of significant contributions to the knowledgebase of the Australian and international coal industry with regard to the characterisation of operations and control of emissions.CITATION:Coplin, N, 2017. Fire suppression systems are now recognised by both NFPA 502 and PIARC as legitimate tools for both life protection and asset protection. The effectiveness of these tools for life protection demands extremely rapid and accurate incident detection coupled with rapid response. This rapid response must be integrated with other emergency systems such as emergency ventilation. The March 2007 fatal Burnley Tunnel incident in Australia graphically illustrates the potential of effectively integrated fixed suppression systems to protect people from harm and save infrastructure from damage. Despite the raft of technology available in that instance to the operator it was the human operatorÆs ability to effectively control the emergency equipment and not the equipment itself which so positively influenced the threat to life and property.

Numerous supergene manganese oxide deposits are developed inSouth China as a result of weathering of a thick sequence of Paleozoic marine Mn-bearing sedimentary rocks, consisting mainly of limestones, cherts and black shales that were intensely folded and faulted due to multiple episodes of tectonism since the late Triassic. The ore minerals are dominantly pyrolusite, cryptomelane, nsutite, lithiophorite and braunite. The supergene manganese ores contain Mn ranging from 20 to 44 wt per cent; manganese oxide deposits derived from cherts and black shales also contain recoverable levels of Co, Ni, Cu, Pb and Zn. 40Ar/39Ar dating of potassium-bearing manganese oxides reveals that extensive supergene manganese ore formation started at least in the earliest Miocene and persisted to the Present. Ages of the deposits show a close correlation to tectonic stability, with the oldest in tectonically quiescent areas and the youngest in active areas that have subjected to continuous uplift and thus significant denudation. The prolonged wet and hot climate since Oligocene and the balance between weathering and erosion, which is parameter to the tectonic stability, are the ultimate controls on the formation and distribution of South China supergene manganese oxide deposits.
