(communication to the Secretary): Mr. Rothwell's condemnation of my paper on the International Correspondence Schools as not giving an impartial view of the whole field of such enterprises, because it was confined to the description of a single one, might be legitimate if I had undertaken or professed to do anything else than that which I was requested by the Secretary of the Institute to do—namely, to give an account of this particular institution. This is a sufficient answer to all his direct or implied criticisms upon my omission to mention either persons or organizations outside of the special limits set for me. Recognizing fully that personalities have no place whatever in the Transactions, I regret the necessity of making the following statement in answer to Mr. Rothwell's charge that I omitted to give due credit to Mr. Ewald, a former principal of the International Correspondence Schools. The Colliery Engineer School of Mines was started in 1891, and its first student was enrolled October 16, 1891. During the fall of the same year the mine-mechanical course was laid out along the same general line that had already been followed in the mining course. This mine-mechanical course was the foundation from which sprung the later developments of the several mechanical courses. The plight of the Japanese mining business is pitiful. Coal mines were given the highest priority for all materials they needed, yet between the end of the war and June 1948, the government was obliged to subsidize them to the extent of 22 billion yen, this being the difference between the consumer's price and the producer's price. Most of the metal mining companies have been operating at only one fifth to one third of war-time production rates, and financial losses have been terrific. The chief difficulties have been a plethora of office workers and a dearth of equipment, supplies, and miners. The principal material needs at metal mines are steel rails. cars, plates, nails, rubber hoses, and belting, to say nothing of modern core drills which are totally lacking. Until recently the great shortage was in coal; for lack of fuel the smelters and factories failed to produce the very metals and equipment now needed to operate the mines. Nation-wide shortages have created a monstrous inflation of prices throughout all the economy, currently amounting to 200 times the prewar figures. THE Bingham area in the West Mountain mining district on the eastern slope of the Oquirrh range, some 28 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, has been the most consistent producer for the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company, production having been continuous, except for minor interruptions, since the organization of the United States Mining Co. in 1899. This production has come from fissures and mantos largely within limestone members aggregating something less than 10 per cent of a thick quartzite sequence of Pennsylvanian age which has been warped into an open syncline plunging northwesterly. Bedding on the easterly limb dips 10°-45° but steep-ens to 90° and even overturns on the westerly limb. Ore bodies cluster about the more northerly of two elongate interconnecting stocks of monzonite which have risen in an axial position within this syncline. Largely within the more northerly of these stocks is the low-grade copper ore body exploited in the Utah Copper open cut of the Kennecott Copper Corp. The values, in seams, minute fracture fillings, and disseminations of pyrite and silica, pervade not only the stock but adjacent sediments, and form a nebulous, sprawling mass which both mineralogically and geographically is the center of the district. The more southerly of the twin stocks appears to be comparatively inert and without obvious relation to mineralization. which

GEOLOGICAL engineering as applied to oil fields, or production geology as some prefer to designate the profession, is designed to fill in the border line between pure geology and pure petroleum engineering. Therefore the production geologist may, and frequently does, reach out to grasp much in both professions. Where once the oil geologist was content to pick samples out of a mud ditch and try to identify oil formations from the color or appearance of flakes of rock bailed out of a well, now he has to deal with graphic electrical logs obtained by intricate and highly technical electrical apparatus and to make exact determinations to the fraction of an inch of the depth and thickness of an oil sand 2 miles below the surface.

THE name fuller's earth, which was derived from its early use in "fulling" or removing grease from woolen goods, is a term that is generally considered to designate mineral matter, containing hydrous aluminum silicates of the clay group, which has a high capacity for removing colors from oils, whether of animal, vegetable, or mineral origin. Fuller's earths are usually dried and may be "tempered" by heating or may be treated with water or reagents to improve their efficiency. For our purpose the term "acid-treated earths" will include those products from the partial decomposition of mineral water by acid which are equal to or more efficient than an untreated fuller's earth from Quincy, Fla., when used in bleaching mineral oil by the "contact" process. In general, the contact process for treating oils consists of heating and agitating a mixture of oil and finely divided adsorbent, the latter being subsequently removed by filtration. The term "adsorbent" is used because, although there has been a great deal of controversy over the mechanism of removal of impurities from oils by mineral matter, there is no doubt that adsorption, which involves the surface of the solid, plays a major part.1 The properties that make fuller's earth useful in the treatment of petroleum products by "percolation" and in the purification of edible oils by the contact process have long been studied, but the comparatively recent adaptation of the contact process to the bleaching of petroleum products has made desirable the further investigation of fuller's earth and other adsorbent earths.

SHARP CONTRAST exists in the reports so helpfully contributed by the individual members of the Milling Committee for this review. Those engaged in the milling of gold and silver ores report great activity, of which some details will be given later. Those engaged in milling ores of base metals report continued depression and little progress. Copper production in the United States is running at about fifteen per cent of capacity. Some Arizona copper mills are closed. Anaconda is milling about 45.000 tons of copper ore per month, and the Utah Copper Co. 35,000 monthly. However, in Canada the International and Falconhridge copper-nickel mills and the Noranda copper-gold mill have increased production. Also the Climax molybdenum mill in Colorado is milling 4000 tons per day. Water shortage from the drought has caused curtailment or complete shutdown of mills in some parts of the West.

Today one of the main articles of diet for the mechanized army is oil and gasoline, and the chief and most efficient source of 'apply overland is the pipe line. It was a flexible 4-in. pipe line that supplied the voracious appetite of tanks, trucks, jeeps, and planes across the North African desert. and it is the 1800-mile pipe line from Calcutta to Kunming, Yunnan Province in China, the longest in the world, that supplied oil and 100-octane gas for the trucks, tanks, Jeeps, and planes fighting on the Assam-Burma-China front in recent months. AGAIN in 1945, the fourth year of World War 11, the American mining industry met the necessary demand made upon it for metals. Lack of labor prevented full production in some districts; maximum output, however, was maintained with the man power available. Development work and maintenance of mechanical equipment were neglected in favor of immediate production. Drafting of the younger men continued throughout the year, and the loss of personnel to war industries with higher wage rates continued up to "V-J" Day, Aug. 14. Labor shortages were more critical in 1945 than in 1944 though the man-power situation eased for some districts in the last quarter of the year. The trend in mining for the most part was to increase tons per man-shift by continued increased mechanization and refinements in methods and practices; larger equipment was installed where practicable. Labor shortages, together with the current higher wage rates, have advanced mechanization several years ahead of normal progress. The manpower shortage and the employment of inexperienced men had the effect of decreasing the average efficiency of the individual workman, but this condition was largely balanced by improved organization, greater efforts to improve labor relationship, and increased use of incentive pay systems. Safety instruction was emphasized, personnel contacts were increased, and more frequent foremen meetings were held to clarify contract agreements. Many of the large companies maintained schools to train green workmen.

MY YEAR OF SERVICE as president of the A.I.M.E. came at a time when the mineral industry had suffered severely because of disturbed economic conditions throughout the world. The Institute, an integral part of this industry, had been similarly affected. Its membership and revenues decreased; it was confronted by problems of retrenchment at a time when its vigorous operation was especially important to its members, of some moment to the mining industry, and of value to the nation. Throughout the last year, the recession of activity in our industry continued with slight abatement. Your Board accordingly exercised such economy within the Institute as was possible without impairment of essential functions. It endeavored to aid in sustaining the morale of members, their sense of professional unity, and their interest in maintaining research and the interchange of scientific and technologic data upon which the progress of our industry depends. Effort was made to assist in the difficult task of finding employment for needy members; our endeavors have met with some success.

The solubilities of nitrogen in liquid iron and liquid Fe-Ni, Fe-Mo, Fe-V, and Fe-Mo-V alloys were measured by the Sieverts method. Measurements were made at 1600° to 1800°C on binary alloys up to 20 pet Ni, 10 pet V, 10 pet Mo; and on ternary alloys containing 0 to 3 pet V with 0 to 5 pet Mo. The results on liquid iron confirm that Sieverts' law is obeyed in the range 50 to 750 mm pressure. The measured solubilities and their temperature coefficients are in general agreement with other modern authors. The logarithms of the activity coefficients of nitrogen in the binaries are approximately linear functions of the pet of alloying element. A method suggested by Wagner, Chipman, and others for predicting gas solubilities in complex alloys from solubility data on binaries was applied to the Fe-Mo-V alloys. Reasonably good agreement was obtained between calculated and experimental solubilities. NITROGEN'S solubility in liquid iron has been studied by a number of investigators. It is reasonably well established that the solubility of nitrogen follows Sieverts' law at least up to 1 atm partial pressure and that the solubility increases gradually with temperature. The solubility of nitrogen in Fe-X binary liquid systems has been investigated in only a few cases. Only the systems Fe-Cr,3-5, 7 Fe-V,3 Fe-Mn,3, 5 Fe-Ni,3, 5 Fe-Si,B, H Fe-C, L, H and Fe-P4 appear to have received any study. The only work on liquid Fe-V was done by Brick and Creevy.3 This was limited to 13.5 pet and 26.5 pet V, but no exact temperatures were recorded. No work whatsoever appears to have been done on liquid Fe-Mo alloys and even work on Fe-Ni alloys is rather scant. The work on liquid ternary systems is still more limited, and the only publication available appears to be that of Wentrup and Reif,7 who studied the Fe-Cr-Mn and Fe-Cr-Ni alloys. Rassbach, Saunders, and Harbrecht17 have reported work on the solubility of nitrogen in stainless steel but this was not a systematic study of any particular system. Commercial alloys usually contain several alloying elements. Thus, it often becomes important to be able to predict the nitrogen solubility in systems containing two or more added elements without the necessity of making measurements. Wagner,14 Chipman," Darken and Gurry," and Morris and Buehl 14 have suggested means by which this may be accomplished, and Langenberg14 has recently applied one of these methods to nitrogen solubility in complex liquid alloys. This paper reports the results of nitrogen solubility determinations on Fe-Ni, Fe-Mo, Fe-V, and Fe-Mo-V alloys and compares calculated and experimental solubilities in the ternary alloy. Attempted measurements on Fe-Cr alloys were not successful by the experimental method employed. Experimental Method The general method of solubility measurement was that of Sieverts.' The apparatus and procedure were essentially the same as used by Liang, Bever, and Floe."' The equipment consisted of a small vacuum furnace heated by a 6 kw induction unit, gas measuring apparatus, and a gas purification train. The crucibles used were Norton Alundum with alumina sand around them for insulation. The crucibles were charged with 100 to 200 g of material, about 180 g or nearly filling the crucible being found most satisfactory. Hot volumes were determined with argon and ranged from 95 to 130 cu cm (stp). Temperature measurements were made with a Leeds and Northrup optical pyrometer which was calibrated periodically against the melting point of iron in the same apparatus."-'* Good quality nitrogen, hydrogen, and argon gases were further purified and dried in standard purification trains. Abstract-The sharp drop in world phosphate demand that took place in 1975, due to temporarily high prices, now seems to be reversing itself. And prices for both phosphate rock and phosphate fertilizers, which declined dramatically from their 1975 highs, now appear to be bottoming out. This recent price weakness has delayed new mining ventures that had previously been planned for completion by around 1980. While there is ample capacity to supply near-term rock needs, the stage seems to be emerging for a better supply-demand and price environment in the late 1970's and early 1980's.

STANDING room only seemed to be the order at the annual session and luncheon of the Eastern magnetite committee. Gatehouse check at the former indicated at least 80, with 33 attending the luncheon - all the crowded facilities could handle. Chairman Crockett opened the meeting by calling upon Meredith E. Johnson, who presented his illustrated paper on "Prospecting for Iron Ore in New Jersey in 1943." This "wartime" brief was discussed by Lucien Eaton, P. W. Henry, and Chairman Crockett. H. E. THE territory under particular consideration in this article comprises portions of La Plata and Montezuma Counties, situated in the southwestern corner of Colorado, and around the base of the La Plata Mountains. (See Fig. 1.) In southeastern Utah and northeastern Arizona there are several mountain systems whose origin and structure are practically identical with the La Platas so that ore occurrences found in the latter can be hopefully looked for in the former. With this assumption, there is an area around the laccolithic ranges which offers promise for a successful exploration for gold ores. Ore occurrences of the Silverton, Telluride, Rico, or Ouray Districts will not be discussed, although in these areas the Mesozoic sediments are more or less involved within the ore-bearing complex. These have been intensively studied and developed. The idea is to set forth what my mining experience has been within the largely unaltered . Mesozoic horizon which remains around the extreme bases of the La Plazas. This, until recent years, has been almost entirely neglected by prospectors and operators and, so far as similar territory in Utah and Arizona is concerned, so remains.

THE activity and enthusiasm of pioneers still prevail among workers in applied geophysics1.- Within the year, new devices have .been tried out, instruments and technique have been improved and the methods of application to commercial problems have been increased in many ingenious ways. There is still great need for more skillful interpretation of results in terms of geology, but oil the whole geophysical prospecting is making encouraging progress toward finding its proper place and function in engineering and geological practice. Spectacular successes continue to be reported, particularly .from the Gulf Coast, where the race for salt domes has not slackened, and encouraging results have been giined elsewhere in the mapping of structures in the search for oil. In the mining field, however, it can hardly be claimed that the same measure of success has been obtained, for brilliant efforts worthy of wide recognition have been overshadowed to some eatent by the unfortunate outcome of surveys undertaken unwisely without recognition of the limitations of the work. Consequently, hopes were aroused that could not be fulfilled, and it must be admitted in an impartial survey that there are a few regions, chiefly in the far north, where the standing of geophysical prospecting is somewhat doubtful and where the course of public opinion regarding it shows a certain similarity to the history of the market during the past few months. Reliable work, however, is steadily going 011 and it can confidently be expected that the methods will eventually be regarded in many regions as an essential part of the technique of securing geologic data needed for intelligent exploration.

IN 1897 I published a proposed explanation t for the variation in color and specific gravity of Pennsylvania oils. A resume of this subject was also presented at the First International Petroleum Congress, in Paris, in 1900. Since that time much experimental work bearing upon this explanation has been carried on by myself, in the United States Geological Survey, and under my direction, by Dr. J. Elliott Gilpin, Marshall P. Cram, and 0. E. Bransky, at the Johns Hopkins University. The experimental results thus accumulated seem to throw considerable additional light upon the variations in color and specific gravity of petroleum, as found in different parts of the world, and also upon the variations in chemical composition. Therefore, it seems as if a, summary of the evidence thus obtained might be of value to those members of the Institute who are interested in the examination of oil-fields. The summary is here presented for that purpose. The phenomenon has often been observed in many oil-fields that oils of different color, specific gravity, and chemical composition may be found within short distances of each other. A conspicuous example of this is the occurrence at Jennings, Welsh, and Anse la Butte, La., of petroleum chemically somewhat similar to Russian petroleum; that is, characterized by the presence of naphthenes. AFTER all the chronology that has been given, what is the present status of chromium steels? For the purpose of this discussion the different types of chromium steels can be divided into three classifications-those containing relatively low , percentages of chromium, say 5 per cent or less; the medium-chromium steels containing up to about 18 or 19 per cent chromium; and the steels containing still higher percentages of chromium, and some of the special alloys. Chromium has some unique effects in steel, so it is well to make a few generalizations. The affinity of chromium for carbon is great and the metal is unique in the manger in which it supplements and enhances the effects of carbon. Chromium retards -considerably the thermal transformations on cooling and exerts an opposing influence both on the absorption and precipitation of the carbides in steel. These statements make it easy to understand the fact that chromium .steels are capable of producing a hardened product at a much slower rate of cooling than is, true of plain carbon steel, and that chromium carbide or -the mixed carbides of iron and chromium do not contribute to brittleness to as great a degree as does iron carbide.

S EVERAL FACTORS have brought about a vastly greater interest in the gold-mining industry in the last two or three years. Outstanding is the fact that there is an open market at a fixed price for all that can be produced. a condition that holds for no other commodity. Costs of production have decreased greatly, owing to lower prices of supplies and equipment and lower wages. Improved metallurgical processes and equipment are also available. To big new gold district is being opened up but virgin ground is being prospected with some success in many of the more remote parts of the world and right here in the United States many old properties are being reopened 111 the light of present condition<, tailing dumps are being re- worked, and profitable leases taken on abandoned property. Many of the men who are becoming interested in gold are mining engineers whose experience has all been with base metals heretofore: some are engineers with no mining experience; some are not engineers at all but men who cannot find profitable employment in their usual field of activity and are attracted by the age-old lore of the yellow metal. Some are business men with a little money and an idea that under present conditions gold mining offers a safer investment for it than most other kinds of business. It is to those more or less inexperienced new- comers in the gold-mining industry that this article i4 ad dressed. Those who are connected with the large gold mines or who have had rears of experience with the small ones will find in the following pages little or nothing of interest but it is hoped that the newer generation of small mine operators, on whom the healthy growth of the industry depends so much, may find here some helpful hints.

TWO papers on health and safety were given Thursday afternoon when a joint session of the Health and Safety Committee and the Mining Methods Committee was held. T. T. Read presided and the first paper, on ventilation at Climax, was presented by the author, L. H. Glanville. In the subsequent discussion by Cloyd M. Smith, P. B. Bucky, B. F. Tillson, D. F. Haley, J. L. G. Weysser, and others a number of interesting points not covered by the paper, which appears in full in the January Mining Technology, were brought out. Ventilation troubles in mines so often hinge on the air being too hot and damp that it was interesting to hear of one where it is frequently too cold and too dry.

FEATURES of the second fall meeting of the Petroleum Division for 1941, held at the Ambassador Hotel, Los Angeles, Oct. 29-30, were the forum on the Paloma Plan on Thursday after- noon, the large attendance from east of the Rockies, and the dinner on Wednesday evening sponsored by the Southern California Section and at which President Suman spoke on the strategic minerals and metals situation. The attendance was large and the technical fare uniformly good ; the presiding officers had the proceedings well in hand at all times and kept things humming. Some- times it was necessary to taper off the discussion because of pressure on time. All this was due to careful groundwork before the respective sessions. These presiding officers deserve citation: L. W. Huebel, Howard Pyle, E. K. Parks, Carlton Beal, E. G. Trostel. R. W. French, Jr., John Dodge, and H. N. Marsh. The Los Angeles local commit- tees and the Southern California Section deserve much credit for the arrangements, which were recognized by suitable resolutions at the end of the meeting.

HOT metal is commonly transported from the blast furnace to the open hearth by one or the other of two general methods: (1) by hot-metal ladles, usually in conjunction with a stationary mixer, or; (2) by means of mixer-type ladle cars, taking the place of both the hot-metal ladles and the stationary mixer. In both cases, the use of transfer ladles for charging the metal into the open-hearth furnaces is necessary. The American Rolling Mill Co. at its Middletown division, adopted hot metal practice on. June 2, 1928. The pig iron is produced&apos; in a .blast furnace about 11 miles from the open-hearth furnaces, and is trans- ported in Pugh-type mixer cars having a capacity of 150 gross tons each. Three cars are in service and handle the delivery of hot metal to the pig machine and the open-hearth furnaces. The capacity of the blast furnace is 550 tons and casts are made every four hours.
